                       -Introduction & Feedback-

Hanjuku Hero: Aa sekaiyo hanjukunare was made in 1992 for the Super Famicom.
Any videogame may be divided in two parts, the gameplay and a storyline. In
this information guide, I have made my best attempt to clarify the gameplay
of Hanjuku Hero, yet I included almost nothing of the storyline. Hanjuku Hero
is about 98% hiragana/katakana (the Japanese syllable-alphabet) and only about
2% kanji. Kanji are used only in the opening scenes of all levels for the
title of each level. To be able to play Hanjuku Hero and figure out most of
this guide you must have at least a very rudimentary understanding of Japanese
hiragana/katakana, the ability to recognize them and know what they sound
like. Without any knowledge of hiragana/katakana, it is extremely hard to
play Hanjuku Hero. You may be able to make connections between menus, prices,
and numbers, but most of the game will not make any sense. Because I only
have this rudimentary understanding of Japanese, and almost no vocabulary, I
have no idea about the storyline. All I can do is just press A during story
sequences. In one case, I even got stuck for not following the storyline.
In level 10, where you must rearrange ten phrases in a certain order that
makes sense, I was clueless for half an hour until I decided to look for the
solution in a Japanese BBS. Fortunately, I found it and the sequence is
included, but you must be able to read the phrases in Japanese. I have
transcribed most of the menus, names, and items from hiragana/katakana to
Roumaji (Western-alphabet renditions of Japanese hiragana/katakana sounds).
In case you have no idea of what all the Japanese letters sound like, I
recommend playing with a kana-Roumaji list or table handy. Look for these in
Japanese-English dictionaries, or try Internet sites. One good place is:
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~yomoto/kana.html. This should make your playing
a lot easier and soon you will have the letters memorized, trust me!
To contact me, write an e-mail to [email protected]. I will answer any questions
about the gameplay, clarify any doubts, and I accept anything good you may
want to add to this guide. I especially need info on the storyline. I do not
think I can answer any questions on the storyline decently. Do not ask me
where you can get ROM images, either. I recommend looking in RPG romsites,
Top-100 sites, and in the worst case, you may have to look in Japanese ROM
pages. About emulation, I strongly recommend SNES9X DOS v. 0.24 Final. In many
computers, Hanjuku Hero froze in many scenes with most recent versions of
ZSNES. I have never tried any other emulator with Hanjuku Hero, either. Look
for SNES9X in most emulation sites. You may freely distribute this file, but
keep it unmodified.

                              -Game Basics-

Hanjuku Hero is a war-strategy game where two armies are battling each other.
I am not really sure why the war occurred, but I think that the two armies
are fighting for control of the Egg World. You control the red Hanjuku (soft-
boiled) army, and your opponent, the blue Kanjuku (hard-boiled) army, is
controlled by the CPU. You start off with a scrolling introduction and a brief
story sequence where the Hanjuku Hero is woken up by the Daijin (the cabinet
minister, an old man who gives you advice, but whom you often see crying).
Your first job is to give the leader of the Hanjuku army, the Hanjuku Hero, a
name. Hiragana, katakana, and a few letters may be used. Together with other
Hanjuku shougun (generals), heishi (foot soldiers), and Egg Monsters (EM.'s),
your objective is to go after and defeat the Kanjuku army. You may save your
progress at any time the Main Menu is available by pressing X. In case the
Hanjuku Hero dies in a battle or inside cave, or all your castles are taken
over, the game is over and you must restart from your last saved spot. In the
"Continue" menu, you may choose to continue from the last saved spot (1st
choice) or restart the tale (2nd choice). Hanjuku Hero is divided into 12
tales, or levels. In each tale, you must first conquer every blue castle in
the map. Soon after a story sequence, the boss' castle emerges and you must
defeat it. In the beginning of the next tale, you select up to three shougun
who were alive by the end of the previous tale to proceed.  After a few
minutes, depending on the speed selected, a monthly event appears, where you
can buy items, refresh your eggs, upgrade your castles, and improve your army.
Random events also occur, both good and bad. Although relatively simple in
nature (no need to move supplies and foot soldiers from place to place and
a simple battle system), Hanjuku Hero is a funny and amusing game. Some
characters in it speak English and Spanish (even though it is written with
Japanese letters), there are parodies of FFIV's elemental bosses (Milon,
Kainazzo, Valvalis, Rubicant), and FF characters (Palom & Porom, chocobos,
moogles) occasionally show up. I also believe the storyline is funny, but
unfortunately I cannot understand it.

                        -Map Movement & Landscape-

Map controls:
D-Pad: move cursors, scroll through menus
A: accept, display Hanjuku castle/shougun menus, display enemy status
    B: cancel
X: open Main Menu (pauses actions)
Y: toggle between large map and small map (does not pause actions)
L/R: hold to speed up D-pad movement
Select: quickly returns cursor to Hanjuku Hero's position on map
Start: pauses actions

In Hanjuku Hero, you control your army and check the opponent's status with a
square-shaped cursor over a bird's eye view of the tale's map. You will begin
all tales with only one castle in control (Arumamuun), and a maximum of four
shougun (including the Hanjuku Hero). Excluding the first tale, you may choose
to have less shougun in the beginning. You begin the first tale with 100 G and
50 heishi. All of your starting shougun carry level 4 eggs. To move your army,
you must first press A over any shougun's location, which in the beginning is
Arumamuun, the only red castle on the map. Select a shougun's name, give him
up to three kirifuda (battle items), and choose his destination with the "G"
cursor. The shougun will always move in a straight line to the destination,
unless a pit is blocking his way. In that case, he will just stop before he
touches the pit. In all cases, shougun leaving a Hanjuku castle will always
take 6 heishi with him, unless there are not enough. While a Hanjuku shougun
is moving, you may press A over him to do the following:
"idou"    : change his destination (using the "G" cursor)
"steetasu": check his HP, stats, egg type/level, hobby, heishi, kirifuda
"kyanpu"  : camp and stop at that place; more than one shougun may stay at
the same place, and then the tent becomes a small castle
"kikan"   : retreat to any Hanjuku castle with the "R" cursor

To check the opponents' status, press A over their castles or shougun. Over
castles, you can see its income, its construction level, who is in there and
whether they carry eggs or not. Over shougun, you can check how many heishi
they have, and whether they have eggs or not. The last line indicates their
possession of an egg: "nashi" means they do not, and "ari" means they do. No
more details are given.

There are two ways of transportation for shougun: feet and horses. Riders
move about twice as fast than walking shougun. Depending on the terrain, the
shougun will move at different speeds. This is a rough list on the different
speeds on different terrains:

FAST    roads \ plains \ plateaus \ mountains \ water     SLOW
MOVEMENT   ice  /        /  swamps  /  forests  / slopes  MOVEMENT

In every tale, there is only one of the following: Atashi's house (a red heart
in the small map), a hot sauna (steam in the small map), a cave (blue archway
in the small map), and the boss' location (skull in the small map).

Atashi's house: This is the place to go when a shougun has a broken egg
(defeated Egg Monster in battle). Stopping by without an egg
or with an unbroken egg will result in Atashi (the fat lady)
telling you that you do not need her help. To recover a broken
egg you must pay either 50 G (recovers to Level 0), 100 G
(recovers to Level 2), or 200 G (recovers to Level 4). In most
cases, pay 200 G so that you may summon powerful Egg Monsters.
However, if you are low on cash, or you know that particular
shougun will not fight soon, save money.

Hot saunas: When a shougun touches one of these, one out of several random
events will occur. The following are the most common events that
happened to me. I have never encountered any negative effects.
           - no effect
           - HP recovery
           - experience gain

Caves: Like the hot saunas, one out of several random events will occur, but
only during the monthly events. Also, effects are both positive and
negative, and there is a great amount of risk involved. In most cases
you can only get a small amount of money and there is a high chance you
will lose your shougun. Always save before going in a cave, since once
you are in it you cannot come out until the end of that month.
      - choice between three chests: nothing or 100 G
      - choice between three levers: nothing, 100 G, or death
      - death (shougun encounters several fat ladies)
      - Chinese salesman (very good kirifuda at a low price)

Bosses' castles: These will appear as soon as the last blue (Kanjuku) castle
is taken over by you. In most castles, there is an unlimited
supply of enemy shougun inside, who pour out about six times
faster than from a last, unprotected regular blue castle.
There is only one case where it is not a castle, in tale #9.
The boss moves around and no shougun come out of it.

                               -Main Menu-

                        - osou (slow)    : 1 month = 360 seconds
Sound mode: Choose between stereo and monoaural.
Ken no keiko: Sword practice. Fight a practice battle (no losses or gains)
with your Daijin, without any eggs or items.
Save: Save your progress in any of the three slots.

                             -Battle & Eggs-

Battle controls:
D-Pad: scroll through menus
A: accept, use power by repeatedly pressing A
B: cancel, open battle menu (pauses actions)
Start: pauses actions

Basic battle menu:
Tamago o tsukau: Summon Egg Monster
Kirifuda: Use your kirifuda (a Hanjuku privilege)
Taikyaku: Retreat, but lose half your heishi and half your shougun's HP

Castle defense battle menu: Several weak shougun have an extra option after
the three basic choices, when defending a castle.
Okunote: A choice between three random options, these are usually bad in the
very beginning. They usually kill all your heishi (without hurting
the opponents) or make you naked. You may even die from a bad
okunote choice. When only your shougun is left, you get choices
which are actually names of kirifuda. These are toned down versions
of them (about 25%), but do not actually use real kirifuda. If you
recognize a kirifuda name, use that.

EM./Boss battle menu for shouguns: Two extra choices before the three basic
                                  options.
Kougeki: Each heishi and shougun hits once; shougun usually deal 5 times
         the damage a heishi deals.
Mou kougeki: A simultaneous, strong attack, which has about a 50% chance of
being successful. Mou kougeki seems to get stronger and more
effective as your shougun approaches death.

EM. summoner battle menu: Three choices.
First/second choice: Various commands which differ from EM. to EM.
Tamagoni modore: Dismiss your EM.

A battle will occur whenever shougun of one team touches an opponent's
shougun/castle, whenever you choose to practice (Ken no keiko in main menu),
or during certain monthly events (traitors and challengers). Only Hanjuku vs.
Kanjuku battles involve a battle menu, eggs, and kirifuda. Any battle will
pause all the other actions happening in the map. Battles are fought in a
constant back and forth slamming of six heishi and a shougun to each side,
with the exception of challenger battles which are one-on-one. Damage is dealt
to a side whenever they either hit a wall or the other army. Generally, more
damage is dealt when the two armies collide. Power is used to change the
momentum of the battle in order to force the opponent to hit the wall. Power
should ideally be used only when your army is advancing (red power bar) and
after both sides stop hitting the walls. Save your energy when the bar is
orange. Besides the usage of power, the sentou (battle) points of each shougun
also greatly affects the outcome of the battle. If a kirifuda is used or an
Egg Monster is summoned/eliminated, the armies will return to their initial
positions. Whenever an EM. is summoned, battle will proceed in a turn-by-turn
fashion. The first summon does not count as a turn; however, the next summon
will count as a turn, and the second EM. will be at a disadvantage (and most
likely be attacked). You may use as many kirifuda as you wish against any EM.
and it will not count as a turn. This is not true of monster boss battles,
though. Against monster bosses you can only use one kirifuda per turn, as
opposed to as many as you want when fighting Egg Monsters. Some monster bosses
may do a really nasty attack after you use a kirifuda, so beware. Against
shougun bosses, who use EM.'s, you can use several kirifuda without using up
a turn.

Eggs are a crucial point in any battle. Good EM.'s can easily eliminate a
group of heishi and a shougun, and are usually necessary against monster
bosses. Eggs can go from levels 0 to 5, and are mainly seen in level 4 as a
maximum. Level 5 eggs can only be obtained with the use of a kirifuda,
"Enjerin" (Angelic). Level 0 eggs may only summon an EggMan, EggManKnight,
or ShinEggMan, depending on the tale, which are pretty useless. Kanjuku eggs
at level 0 summon DarkEggMans. Whenever an EM. is summoned, its level will
automatically go down by one (except for level 0), it will change colors, and
will be weaker. In case the EM. is defeated, or a suicide command is given,
the egg will be considered broken and a grey outline will show. Broken eggs
are useless until they are repaired by Atashi. If you dismiss an EM., the egg
will not break but its level will have gone down by one. The quality of your
EM.'s depend both on the egg's level/color and also your Hanjuku level
(experience level). You may gain experience in several ways, but the main
source is, in my opinion, buying the 500 G object for the nice-looking lady
in the monthly events. A hot sauna event also gives you experience. Winning
battles clearly gives you experience, but not as much as the events. You
should not worry too much about experience (they never tell you how much you
are getting anyway), since your EM.'s will get stronger with time. If you go
slower and fight more, your EM.'s will become stronger. However, definitely
pay the 500 G for the lady unless you do not have enough money to spend.

Egg types: The four main types of eggs I have encoutered are the following:
Check for these types on a shougun's status list.
-Eraberu Egg: The only one of these I have seen is with the Hanjuku Hero.
You may choose between three EM.'s (you see their names).
As the egg level decreases, your EM.'s quality gets worse.
-Slot Egg: Press A to stop the scrolling. The list includes weak and strong
monsters, and as the egg level decreases, you get more and more
"Hazure" and "Ouhazure". "Hazure" automatically gives you either
EggMan, EggManKnight, or ShinEggMan, depending on the tale.
"Ouhazure" not only uses up an egg level, it also changes the
opponent's EM. into a better one.
-Ippatsu Egg: A one-time use egg which is usually obtained from a defeated
Kanjuku shougun who left behind an unbroken egg. After the EM.
is summoned, the egg is gone; it cannot be restored or even
              repaired.
-Anything else: A level 4 egg which gives you no choices, and has a fixed EM.
for each egg and Hanjuku level. As the egg level decreases,
                your EM.'s get worse.

Egg Levels and their colors:

    5: Tan
    4: Yellow
    3: Pink
    2: Blue
    1: White
    0: Small, White
Broken: Gray

                             -Monthly Events-

Depending on the speed chosen in the System menu, after a short period of time
of map movement you will hear three short beeps and a long one, signaling the
monthly events. Several or no random events may occur before you can access
the monthly event menu.

- Farmer events: 4x the regular income
                 2x the regular income
                 Very little income
                 Earn 50 G
- Shougun events: Trade: trade a Hanjuku shougun for a Kanjuku shougun
Traitor: H. Hero must fight the traitor with 6 heishi to a
                           side, no eggs or kirifuda.
Challenger: H. Hero must fight the challenger one-on-one.
After you win, he joins you/
Mix-up: a free chance to get a shougun to join you. Pick
one of the three (completely random).
Return: Your shougun return to the battle field, three
by three. They are chosen randomly and are
automatically placed in the last castle the
                          H. Hero entered.
- Soldier riots: Three choices: - vacation: lose about 50% of heishi
                                - bonus: lose 50% of your gold
                                - all or nothing
- Ladies: Fat (Atashi): you must pay her something, and usually not get
                        anything in return
nice-looking: The only useful choice here is the 500 G, in my
opinion. You get a lot of experience.
- Chinese salesman: Buy medium-quality kirifuda at a good price. You must
use the money you had at the beginning of the events.
- Kirifuda events: Kyatorumyuu: Arumamuun is invaded by octopus aliens, but
                                you get 5 Kyatorumyuu.
Santa Claus: Every 12th month, Santa will give you either
                                1 Barumunku, 1 Gurumii, or 5 Bagustoomu
- Earthquake: All castles' construction level decreases by 1.
- Goninja: 5 black ninjas offer to kill a Kanjuku shougun for 50 G.
- Random events: Get 100 G
                 Palom/Porom/Chocobo (no effect)
                 Musician, a sound test

Monthly event menu: Use this menu efficiently to recover your eggs, improve
your castles, and buy new kirifuda.

                   Shounin          Shougun boshuu
                   Heishi hojuu     Shougun kaiko
                   Chikujou         Tamago no kaifuku
                   Main Menu        Mouoshimai!

Shounin: Buy kirifuda. Every tale has a list which stays the same throughout,
        containing eight kirifuda each.
Heishi hojuu: Buy heishi (foot soldiers). Each heishi costs 1 G, and there
             seems to be no limit.
Chikujou: Upgrade your castles' construction level. This will increase their
income and you will get more money next month. You may only upgrade
a castle one level each month, and only if there is at least one
shougun inside. The cost of upgrading depends on the residing
         shougun's naisei (domestic) points.
Main Menu: Open the main menu. You cannot save, however.
Shougun boshuu: Hire a shougun for 50 G. You will have to select one shougun
out of the three mixed up shougun. This is somewhat random
and does not totally depend on how they moved.
Shougun kaiko: Sell your shougun. The money you get for each depends on how
good he is, but this value is only about 1 to 20 G. It is
really not a very good idea to sell your shougun unless they
are totally useless. In most of the cases, you should
strategically leave weaker shougun behind in castles so they
              may upgrade them.
Tamago no kaifuku: Recover an unbroken egg (from levels 0-3) to level 4. It
costs 50 G per egg. You may choose to recover all (top of
the list), or choose an individual.
Mouoshimai!: End the monthly event menu.

                            -Game Strategies-

There are many different strategies you may use to play Hanjuku Hero, but
through my experience I think that these are pretty effective strategies:

-During map movement:

First, you should set the speed to slow, so that you have extra time to move
around the cursor. A month only takes 4 minutes of map movement, so use it
effectively. Open the Main Menu (to pause the game) and look at the map. Find
one blue castle around the middle where you may easily access other blue
castles, and send the Hanjuku Hero there. The reason is that in the next
month, newly acquired shougun will be at the castle where the Hanjuku Hero is
and you will save movement time. Also, plan to only hold four castles in the
first month, so you may upgrade them all. Keep stronger shougun where you may
be attacked, and have shougun with high naisei (domestic) points behind to
upgrade the castles. Move them when they reach level 5. Before taking over the
last Kanjuku castle, look for any landmark, pattern, or strange buildings
around the map. That is where the boss' castle will be after taking over the
last blue castle. Move your strongest shougun around the boss' castle area,
and make sure surrounding castles are protected. Then take over the blue
castle, and quickly go fight the boss. Enemy shougun come out really fast out
of the boss castles. The only exception to this strategy is in tale 4, where
the boss castles are already open. There, you should also quickly eliminate
the bosses.

-Kirifuda strategies:

BlackCats, Midgets, and MimicBoxes:

Buy plenty of these items whenever you can; in my opinion they are the most
useful and efficient defensive items. The best deals are the red lantern
carts for Midgets (4 G) and BlackCats (1 G), but since they are not in the
same list you can only buy one type of these each time. The best deal on
MimicBoxes is the Chinese guy who will appear during the monthly event. The
Chinese guy in the cave does not sell MimicBoxes, but he sells better stuff.

Defense vs. Enemy shouguns with Eggs (by taking their eggs):
Mikkumii (MimicBox), 2x Burakki (BlackCat),

Early in the game, most Enemy shouguns will not use their eggs unless you
constantly attack them hand-to-hand only. Therefore, when you are defending
with a shougun who does not have an egg, use this strategy. Start off with
the Mikkumii (MimicBox) to kill all the Enemy heishi and damage the shougun.
Then fight the lone shougun until he has only 40 HP (do not let his HP go
under this or he'll use his egg), and quickly use both BlackCats. This should
kill him and you can take his egg. Avoid doing this near the end of the game,
since MimicBox is a powerful Kirifuda the Enemy will most likely start off
the battle with his egg and almost certainly will defeat your shouguns who
do not have eggs.

Defense vs. Enemy shouguns with Eggs (by breaking their eggs):
Kurobogundan (Midgets), 2x Burakki (BlackCat)

This strategy works best when you are defending with a shougun who has an egg,
or around the last four tales, where enemies usually use their eggs in the
very beginning if you carry powerful Kirifuda, such as BigWave, and FireSoul.
Use the Midgets to destroy Enemy's Egg (high chances), and use BlackCats to
make the battle easier. Carrying only one Midgets and weak items such as
BlackCats or Tables will prevent most Enemy shouguns from immediately using
their eggs after battle starts. This strategy should save your Egg Levels and
some money on repairing your eggs.

Defense vs. Enemy shouguns without Eggs:
Mikkumii (MimicBox), 2x Burakki (BlackCat),

Use this strategy only after you have enough money to spend on MimicBoxes.
It makes these battles much easier, but is a little costly in the very
beginning. Use the MimicBox first to kill all Enemy heishi and then use the
weak kirifuda (if you want to) to deplete the shougun's health.

A note on Enjerin (Angelic):

A very useful item which is a little hard to obtain. While you do not need
over 30 of them, battles with EM.'s would be really easy with these (given
that you have an unbroken egg). This item will completely restore your heishi
to the initial condition of that battle (be aware that if all your heishi are
gone in the beginning of the battle, you will get none back), and max out
your Egg's level to 5 in most cases. Make sure your egg is not defeated; this
item does not revive your egg, only Atashi does. Using this item is the only
way I know of to get the maximum level with your eggs. Occasionally, you will
be able to summon very strong EM.'s near the end of the game, such as Hades.

-One more battle strategy:

The best way to eliminate enemies with eggs (especially in defense) using a
weak shougun is to first give him very strong kirifuda (such as Fabaado), and
quickly try to use all the kirifuda as soon as possible. Do this only when
you know you will win, otherwise the opponent will summon their EM. In later
tales they will immediately summon the EM.'s without giving you a chance to
open your battle menu. In this case, run away. Their egg level will go down,
but you will lose half of your heishi and shougun. You may totally drain
their eggs like this, and kill them with a Fabaado (even a lone shougun can
eliminate the entire enemy). This strategy is pretty costly, however. Use
a version of this strategy against most shougun bosses. Carry strong kirifuda,
see what EM. shows up, and then run away unless you know you can win. Do it
several times if you need to, summon your EM., and then beat them. Remember
that the bosses will not summon their EM.'s if they do not really feel
threatened. However, do not do this against tale 2's Nise Hero. He summons
the EM. Shiromadoushi, who cannot damage your heishi or shougun, but can
quickly eliminate your EM. Simply fight him (Kougeki/Mou kougeki) until he
decides to use "Sorry" and leave.

tend to increase in the Kanjuku Army as you progress in the game. Party
shouguns' stats will remain the same as long as you keep them with you.

                             -Kirifuda List-

The descriptions and English names were completely made up by me and do not
necessarily reflect on the real meaning of the Japanese name. The English
names just make it a little easier for me to explain the aspect of the
kirifuda.

Abbreviations/Definitions:

70%       : Percentage of HP depleted
L/H%      : Low/High chances of event occurring
H. Based  : Whether having more heishi on your side increases damage.
Damage following Y assumes you have 6 heishi on Party.
H. Kill   : How many Enemy heishi are killed in average. Numbers after the
slash are the damage dealt to shougun. So, 6/10 means all heishi
are killed and the shougun takes 10 damage.
S. Dmg.   : Average HP damage to Enemy shougun. Assume Enemy shougun is alone.
EM. Dmg.  : Average HP damage to Enemy Egg Monsters.
Boss Dmg. : Average HP damage to monster bosses.

The numbers represent the sale list of "Shounin" in the corresponding
      tale.

C1/C2: Sale lists of the Chinese salesman (wears red clothing with yellow
borders, sunglasses, and shakes his arms) you encounter in:
C1: Randomly during the monthly events.
C2: Randomly after going in a cave.

R1/R2: The two random sale lists of the red lantern cart who appears every
once in a while. You will hear a wind instrument play a short tune to
announce his appearance. The salesman walks around on a random area of
the map and you must send a shougun after him to buy his Kirifuda. He
is shown as a red box on the small map.

                            -Egg Monster List-

The damage entries indicate the number of hits times a pretty rough value of
damage per hit. Values increase as your level goes up or may decrease if you
are facing a tough EM. A value of 2x 50 indicates 2 consecutive hits of 50 Dmg.
each, totaling to about 100 HP of damage. Unless otherwise stated, status up
entries are always on the user and status down entries are always on opponents.
A note on "Kill all heishi" entries: when used against lone shougun, it deals
around 12 damage.

First line : effect on heishi/shougun.
Second line: effect on Egg Monsters.
If there is only one line, then the effects are the same for both.
