Version History:
Version 2 - 01/01/03
-was able to include new moves for makai and belva.
-plus a new secrets/cheats list.
(thanks to Lei and Clarence)
Version 1 - 11/18/01
-Original version.
Introduction
------------
This little known game was developed by Winkey Soft, and published by
Banpresto.
It is, in my humble opinion, the best side scrolling fighting game in existence.
Unfortunately I have not seen a translated version of this game, hence why I
cannot divulge much of the story.
What sets this game apart from others of it's ilk is the complexity of the
gameplay. This game comprises special attacks, counter attacks, juggles, special
throws, team-up attacks.. so you rarely get bored, unlike in so many other
repetitive side scrolling games.
My main reason for writing this FAQ is simply because one didn't already exist,
(well, on gamefaqs anyway), and I felt that it deserves at least a little more
recognition.
This game may be pretty hard to find nowadays, however you can still find a ROM
for it on certain snes emulation pages. good luck.
This FAQ is best viewed with 'notepad'
Feel free to e-mail any questions, suggestions, etc.. I would even be quite
interested (and relieved) to see if anybody is actually reading this. :o
The Characters
--------------
MAKAI
A man in denim with Reddish hair, he appears to be the main character, he is the
token 'all rounder'. average speed and strength. he does however seem to have an
advantage in the special move area. He possesses a weapon, which is bound to his
forearms, they open up when fires his projectile attacks.
IYO
A cat-like woman with a tail, she is the fastest character, but unfortunately
the weakest. She is most powerful in the air, as she is the only one who can
grapple her foes in mid-air, causing great damage. She can spring off walls and
enemies by pressing 'attack' and the 'opposite direction' of the wall/foes. Her
weapon of choice is a staff with a ball and chain attached.
BELVA
A blue robot, he is the strongest character, but is also the slowest. He can do
a lot of damage with his grapples and he is the only character who possesses a
double-jump (press jump twice). He uses electric attacks.
The Basics:
----------
There are three action buttons in this game. Attack, Jump and Special (which you
have to set up in the config menu-otherwise it is attack and jump together)
In the game there are 2 bars per character.
The above blue bar is the energy bar, when it depletes, that's one life over.
the below red bar is the 'special' bar, basically any special moves you do will
deplete this bar,
Regain Special- to refill this bar, all you have to do is simply go neutral
(don't press anything) and your character will start to glow and refill the bar.
Any action will disrupt this.
Blocking-Hold down the attack button and you will go into the blocking stance.
In this game, you can block almost anything, however every successfully blocked
attack drains your some of your special bar. This isn't really a problem, unless
you lose all of the special bar. In this circumstance, you are momentarily
dizzied and therefore susceptible to attacks. note-You cannot avoid being thrown
by blocking
counter attack-when in the blocking stance, press the direction of your enemy
just as his attack connects with you. An easier way of doing this is you just
rapidly tap the direction. So if for example i am on the left and my enemy is
attacking me from the right, hold down 'attack' (to block) and rapidly tap
'right' while the enemy tries to attack. My character will strike back. This
isn't especially powerful, but it can be quite useful.
back attack- pressing in the opposite direction to where you are facing-and the
'attack' button simultaneously will allow your character to execute a fast
knockdown attack.
This is especially useful when there are enemy characters attacking you from
behind.
throws-like most side scrolling fighting games, to grapple the enemy you just
have to walk into them. It is advisable to try this vertically rather than
horizontally to avoid oncoming attacks. Once you are holding the enemy, you
can:
a)tap the attack button to keep hitting the enemy
b)tap a direction and the attack button to throw (can help knock down multiple
targets)
c) press 'jump' to a grappling move
d) press 'back' and 'jump' to do a secondary grappling move
Dashing/Running Attack
All characters can run continuously by tapping the direction twice (and holding
it the second time). When dashing, pressing the attack button will do dashing
attack. Makai's dashing attack can actually hit floored enemy characters. After
running, Pressing 'Jump' and THEN 'attack' makes you do a stronger type of air
attack than normal. Characters can also do 'special' running attacks.. more on
this later.
Attacking floored characters- when you have knocked down an enemy, you can
follow it up with another attack before they have a chance to arise. You do this
by jumping towards them and pressing 'down' and 'attack'. Makai does an elbow
drop, Belva does a knee drop, and Iyo plunges with her weapon. It is not very
useful as it does not seem to be particularly damaging.
Juggling-this is what I feel is the best part about this game. All enemies can
be Juggled- which means that they can be hit consecutively in the air before
they hit the ground. This is especially fun in 2 player mode whereby you can
initiate original combos via the use of your special moves to destroy the enemy
in mid air. Any form of attack can, if done successfully, juggle the enemy, even
a simple jab. However a fun part of this game is just to always be on the
lookout for enemy characters hurtling through the air and to quickly dispatch
him in the most prolific way possible. The 'back attack' is quite a good move to
do a quick juggle. Have fun playing 'ghost tennis' with friends. ;)
throwing the human player-when you have two players, if you make bodily contact
with the other, you will grapple the other. Unless you choose 'battle' in the
config menu, you cannot harm one another, so throwing the other player can in
fact be an advantage. The character can travel a great distance this way and
launch the equivalent of the 'running jump kick'. It is quite useful to throw
Iyo, or throw enemies towards Iyo...(more later)
Items-again, like in other side-scrollers, there are barrels and that when
destroyed, provide you with items to assist you. These are:
[curative]
Soup-gives almost full energy
Drink-Almost full energy
Medical Pack- full energy
Red things-full special bar
[weapons]
yellow sword-very powerful
pistol-fairly decent gun
machine gun-strong weapon
shock gun-very strong weapon
grenade-quite good, but has a very short fuse
[points]
there are many various icon items that you can pick up which provide you with
score-points. Which in turn can grant you 1-ups.
They are usually character faces. From other banpresto games perhaps (?)
Bonus Stage
-----------
there is only one bonus stage in the game (unless you count the elevator stage
where you collect point icons while grenades are surrounding you). The objective
of it, is to hit all the police characters and avoid the female characters. You
get a point for the cops, and you lose 2 points for hitting the woman.
It's useful to do well here so you can get a few 1-ups.
Team up Attacks
---------------
when one character is grappling an enemy, if the other player presses 'attack'
on the enemy being held, both player-1 and player-2 do a double-team attack
together on the enemy. These moves can be quite devastating.
If the characters are MAKAI and BELVA, they both launch in the air with the
enemy and come down in a double pile-driver.
If the characters are MAKAI and IYO, they both do a 'flash kick' together on the
enemy, who is launched and falls back down.
If the characters are IYO and BELVA, they also do a double pile-driver attack.
Special Team-up Attacks
-----------------------
When both player-1 and player-2 have full (or almost full) special bars, you can
do a special double team attack. You do this by trying to grapple the other
player (by walking into the other character).
note-this and the 'intentional throw' is really the only reason why the human
players are permitted to grapple each other. The special team-up attack or
throw.
If you don't plan to do these moves, I suggest
you avoid making contact with each other to avoid frustration. ie. "stop
grabbing me!1"
The special team up attack is different depending on which characters are used.
As there are 3 different combinations, there are 3 different Special Team Up
Attacks.
Makai and Iyo = Flaming Dragon Claw
Makai and Iyo link arms and spiral around each other as a massive golden flame
covers them and engulfs the enemy.
Makai and Belva = Thunder Shock Fury
Makai and Belva smash fists, then crouch to send an electrical shockwave which
sizzles the enemy.
Belva and Iyo = Red Wind Radiation
Belva and Iyo twirl around and create a surge of red wind which hoists the enemy
and crushes them against the wall.
Special moves
-------------
Each character has 2 special moves as standard. They are performed by going into
the block stance (hold down the 'attack' button) and press:
1) 'left' then 'right' - the character starts glowing. You have to release the
'attack' button to execute the move. The longer you charge the move, the
stronger it is. But if you hold it for too long the character just stops. It's
best just to wait for the glow to turn yellow and then release. This is the
HORIZONTAL SPECIAL.
or
2) 'down' then 'up' - this is the VERTICAL SPECIAL.
if you hardly have any special bar left, your character will make a sound and
clutch his/head in pain, illustrating that s/he cannot perform that move until
you have recharged the bar a little.
You can do a quick special move by just holding the 'attack button', tapping
left-right (or down-up) and letting go very quickly. This is useful for those
quick juggles that you will invariably wish to do.
Desperation Moves
-----------------
All 3 charcters can perform these powerful attacks when they have reached 2
conditions:
a)their energy bar is almost depleted (on red)
b)they have a full special bar
when this is the case, hold down the attack button and press: UP, DOWN, RIGHT
it will totally deplete your special bar, but it's worth it.
Unique techniques

(legend)
A=attack
J=Jump
S=Special

][=release button
[MAKAI]
Name Controls Description
---- -------- -----------
Spinning Dragon S Makai jumps and spins,
kicking high in the air,
and following it with a
low sweep.
Makai combination -> [->] A, down, up if your manage to score
a second hit with makai's
shoulder barge, quickly
pressing down-up will enable
Makai to land another attack.
(although this takes practice)
Flaming Dragon Kick [A] <- -> ]A[ Makai jumps in the air and
launches 2 strong flying
kicks lighting the enemy on
fire
Multiple Dragon Kick J S(rapid) Makai jumps in the air and
launches a whole string of
un-enhanced dragon kicks,
juggling the enemy.
Rising Dragon [A] down, up, ]A[ Makai does a shoryuken,
hitting the enemy multiple
times, setting them on
fire
Dragon Blast -> [->] S Makai opens his forearm
weapon and fires one
strong blast, knocking the
enemy back
Machine Gun Fury -> [->] S(rapid) Makai opens his forearm
weapon and fires multiple blasts,
continuously juggling the
enemy, finishing with a
flaming blast. This is the
strongest move in the game.
A full special bar is
required for best results
Typhoon [A] up, down, -> Makai's deperation move.
He does an uppercut and sends
two blue whirlwinds which hoists
the enemy off-screen, doing
considerable damage
(depleted health and full special
bar required)
[IYO]
Jaguar Spin S Iyo jumps, spinning her
weapon around with her,
finally stretching it out.
(also in air)
Tiger Force [A] <- -> ]A[ Iyo rolls forward,
delivering a single
crushing blow with her
spiked mace
Rising Scratch [A] down, up, ]A[ Iyo rises upwards hitting
the enemy multiple times
upwards and once downwards
Ignition -> [->] S Iyo darts forward
extending her ball and
chain, setting her foes on
fire
Spinning Pile Driver J A(when contact) Iyo jumps and grabs the
enemy in mid-air, then
sends them spinning down
on their heads.
Feline Leg Scissors J down, A Iyo jumps and when she is
near the foes head, she
wraps her legs around his
neck, twisting the
enemy to the ground. ^_^"
Heat Wave [A] up, down, -> Iyo's desperation move.
She spins across the screen
with her Jaguar spin
sending waves of fire
at the enemy
(depleted health and full special
bar required)
[BELVA]
Rocket Spin S Belva stretches out his
arms and spins around with
the use of rockets
Lightning Fists [A] <- -> ]A[ Belva moves across the
screen rapidly smashing
through enemies.
(uncharged, he stands
still)
Twisted Knee [A] down, up, ]A[ Belva's jetpacks cause him
to rise, smashing the
enemy consecutively
Mechanical Backlash -> [->] S S Belva darts forward
spinning his arms
providing two powerful
collisions
Impervious metal mechanical backlash After belva does this spinning
then wait maneuver and waits for a couple
of seconds,he becomes invincible.
enemies cannot harm him.
This state will only expire if
belva attacks his enemies.
Therefore this function is only
useful when you need to acquire
health without running the risk
of
harm, or for example during the
elevator stage where the grenades
are likely to drain belva's
health.
Mr Belvadere Shock (grapple) S Belva holds the enemy in
his oily grip, and uses
his special bar to
electrocute the enemy
Mr Beladere Piledriver (grapple) J-J Belva shouts and leaps higher
than usual as he piledrives the
enemy into the ground.
Knee Jolt -> [->] J S Belva dashes forward and
delivers one sharp and
strong jumping knee
Photon Blast [A] up, down, -> Belva's desperation move
He opens up his chest
plate, to unveil two cannons
which fry any enemies within
a close proximity.
(depleted health and full special
bar required)
Misc
----
when you are knocked down, your character automatically attacks as he arises.
This gives you back a tiny amount of special bar.
pressing the 'special button' allows you to do a spinning attack. Allowing you
to hit the enemies surrounding you. In many other games (such as final fight)
using this eats away at your health bar, but in Ghost Chaser only the 'special
bar' suffers, so don't be afraid to use it.
Iyo can use her 'Jaguar Spin' even in the air.
Whenever you are almost dead, remember that you can always use the desperation
move.
Battle Mode
-----------
In the options menu, you can change the default game setting from 'normal' to
'battle'.
I have only experimented with this mode recently.
In Battle Mode, player 1 and player 2 can attack and do damage to one another.
Therefore you cannot initiate your special team up attack, if you try, you will
simply perform your secondary throw on your partner. The desperation move will
also damage your partner.
Another extra feature in battle mode, is the ability for player 1 and player 2
to be the same character. Imagine 2 Makais doing the 'machine gun fury'
together and you'll see how this might be quite interesting..
The fact that player 1 and player 2 can attack each other may make the game more
of an interesting challenge, so try it out.
BOSSES
------
Throughout the game, at the end of each stages you will encounter boss
characters. This is a guide to help you with any problems you are having with
them. Note: on the 'easy' game setting, some of the bosses may be lacking some
of their attacks.
Stage 1. R-Snail
This robot which looks like it's from Robocop isn't too difficult, it has 4 main
attacks.. It can prod you with its arms, shoot with it's machine gun, shoot
rockets at you, and jump on you. The problem with the massive robots is you
can't grab them..
It will try and jump on you every time you knock it down, so just step to the
side of where it is about to land and charge up your Vertical special. Try and
avoid getting hit with the projectiles as it has a nasty tendency to juggle
you.
Stage 2. J-11
This robotic shark character looks pretty cool, every time you knock him down,
he has quite a good method of avoiding your follow-up attacks, by splitting into
2, creating a fake momentarily.
He has 2 main attacks. He can shoulder barge you, and he can also use his flame
thrower. Try not to get too close to him as he can grab you and start biting
your neck. Use your horizontal specials effectively.
Stage 3. Neptune
The God of the ocean is your enemy? who'd have thunk it? This guy can be
irritating. He has a taunt, which lowers your special bar. If the taunt depletes
your bar, you are dizzied. Almost every time you knock him down, he will cover
himself with electricity, so don't try to just stand over him trying to get the
grapple, more than likely he'll grab you first anyway.
If you are at a distance from him, occasionally he leaps towards you with his
trident. Try to get him with your Vertical Special, if he does. Neptune can also
use his trident to do rapid stabs which does high damage.. if he is at half
screen distance, he will almost always do it. You should try blocking it at
least. Iyo can grab this guy in mid air.
Stage 4. HR-Snail 2
The Stage 1 robot's brother! and he's got an extra move! When it jumps and
lands, it creates explosions around it. What this means is that you can't try
and stand next to it ready to use your vertical special, so stick with the
horizontals. You shouldn't really have any trouble with this goon.
Stage 4. Tulks and Belva-18
After that robot, you fight the 2 idiots who set him loose. One wrestling style
character (Tulks), and... Belva's red brother (Belva-18).. I really like this
fight because the enemy is pretty much on the level as you. They've got Special
Moves, but they never charge them up. You'll still see the red Belva for
instance dashing across the screen doing his Lightning Fists. They can even
do a special double team on you. Like your characters, when they get knocked
down, they get up with a move, so this means don't stand next to them when the
fall. The wrestling character has a habit of shooting his American football
projectile, so watch out for it. It's a good technique to get them both together
and launch a multiple hitting charged special.
Stage 5. Fu-Ga and Ri-Ga
Double Neptunes? there are 2 but they're not as strong, they can still be pests
as they jump through the air with their tridents.
If you're really unlucky they'll do a double taunt and deplete your special
bar..Just get the vertical specials ready.
Stage 5. Girulian
Ok it's the last guy.. just some business character. He seems to think that if
he has his hands in his pockets while he fights, he'll beat you in style. Which
he probably could.. just don't try to throw this guy, while it may be possible,
he will almost indefinitely get you in his legs scissors and flip you away,
doing quite a bit of damage. You can use Iyo's Spinning Pile Driver on him when
he jumps up to do a flying kick, but the timing is a little tricky.
His other damaging move is his multiple hitting cartwheel. So if you've got Iyo
on your team, get her to use her spinning pile driver on him when he jumps in
the air. Otherwise, use Makai's Multiple Dragon Kick.
Stage 5. Perfect G
Girulian sells his soul to the devil to become even more powerful. Perfect G can
be pretty rude. He hovers all over the place, so he's hard to target. But on top
of that he has 2 attacks which are the equivalent of your Special Team-Up
attacks. One of them is exactly like Iyo and Belva's team up, however his other
one is more lethal. He fires 2 whirlwind discs which travel towards you and then
up, hitting you multiple times if you get caught.'
Perfect G's throw, places one of those discs on you also.
he can also use a jab frenzy upon you.
Perfect G, like neptune, can taunt, and does so quite frequently.
Apart from all that, he does standard attacks and also shoots you from above.
He can't be grappled, so just stick with the other various special attacks.
You should use the Machine Gun Fury as a last resort.
Secrets/ CHEATS
---------------
( Unlimited Time ) - on the main menu screen, highlight (but not select) the
number
of players you want to use, then using player1 controls, enter:
L, R, -> , -> , <- , <- , and hold L & R together.
do not release L & R until the character select screen is available.
( costume colour change ) - when your character dies in the game:
press and hold L & R as you select the character.
release only when your character appears.
( 2 of the same character ) - you can do this only in 'battle mode'.
hold L & R when choosing character.
( level select ) - when in the mission briefing screen, using player2 controls:
press and hold L, R, A, B, X, Y , and one direction.
right = level 2
down = level 3
left = level 4
up = level 5
continue to hold all these buttons down until the briefing screen is over.
Final Thought
-------------
Thanks for taking the time to read through my FAQ. I Hope it helped you get more
out of this truly great game. If you have any questions or suggestions, contact
me at
[email protected]
There is still much more to this game:
I have searched the Internet quite extensively, and the only page I could find
on Ghost Chaser is a great Chinese one.
http://61.172.255.76/canlan/dj/denjin.htm
written by Lei Wu.
Take a look at it.
It contains all the secrets. and some great screenshots, some of which
illustrate
a cheat that you can enter to enable you to watch some of the computer
controlled
non-selectable characters take the main gaming roles.
Tulks, J-11, Kurokishi (the purple haired woman..), Girulian and Bomb
Unfortunately it is not possible to control these characters.
The page also contains information about the sequel to this game which came out
only
in arcade format, titled "Denjin Makai 2".
This game has yet to be dumped in order for it to be available for arcade
emulation.
But I await it eagerly, and hope it could be the subject matter for my next
FAQ.
But regarding ghost chaser densei, I believe there is yet more to be discovered
about this game.
I'll update this FAQ again as soon as I search---->find out more :)
Special Thanks
