II. Game Info

===============================================================================
 1. Controls
===============================================================================

The controls of the game are quite simple, as with most vertical shooters.

The format for the control description is:
    Button - Action: Description

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B - Shoot: This should be held for most of the game, as that will allow
you to destroy many obstacles that would otherwise be bothersome.

Y - Bomb: This drops a bomb, which is more powerful than a regular shot.
These should be conserved for bosses, and then only for the more
      difficult ones.

D-Pad - Move: This moves you around the screen.

Start - Pause: You HAVE played a video game before, right?

===============================================================================
 2. Powerups
===============================================================================

Several powerups are available to make the game a bit easier for you.  A
basic knowledge of these is essential to finishing the game in a timely
manner.  The names are my own affectionate terms for the powerups, and are
not translated versions of the Japanese names.

Balloons: These float around your screen at predetermined intervals, and,
when shot, will drop a powerup which you should snag if it looks good.
This is the only way of getting powerups in the game, so I suggest
    shooting any that you see.

Cupcakes: These are a bit tough to figure out.  You begin the game (and
each new life) with one stream of projectiles coming from your, um,
weapon.  For every three cupcakes you collect, another stream will be
added.  Once you reach three streams, you can still collect cupcakes, but
they will not add any more streams.  Each time you are hit by an enemy,
enemy projectile, or other dangerous object, you will lose a stream.  If
you are hit when you have only one stream, you will lose a life.  This
means that the number of streams you have is the number of hits you have
left, so try to keep three streams at all times.
A piece of wisdom for you:  When you have three streams already, and you
collect more cupcakes, your cupcake meter (lower right hand corner of
the screen) will progress like so: One Cupcake->Two Cupcakes->Zero
Cupcakes, because when you reach three, it starts over.  What this means
strategically is that you should always keep two cupcakes, and avoid any
others, because then if you are hit and lose a stream, you will only
need one more cupcake to regain it, whereas if you had collected a third
cupcake and restarted your count, you would need three more cupcakes to
regain that stream.  So always try to keep two cupcakes and three
      streams if possible.

Triple deluxe cupcake of uber-power: These are quite handy.  They are
about twice as wide as a normal cupcake, and have three cherries instead
of one.  When you pick one up, you will jump straight to three weapon
streams regardless of how many you had previously.  These can be real
life-savers when you are down to one string in a tight spot.

Bombs: These look like a weapon power up, but the icon on them is a ring
of circles.  You will notice that your weapon does not change when you get
one, but your bomb count does go up.  Drop these suckers with the Y
button, but onyl use them on bosses when you are having trouble.

Rapid Fire: This is your standard weapon.  It shoots a stream of little
circles which are actually quite effective considering that they are the
default weapon.  These hit very fast, great for lots of small enemies.
The best part is that they are the only weapon which angles outward when
you have two or three strings.  The other weapons only go forward, so this
one hits the widest section of the screen.  This is a great weapon which
will serve you well throughout the game if you can keep it at two or three
strings.  However, at one string, it is very weak, so you may want to
switch to something else until you get more streams.  The icon for this
powerup is a large circle on top of a smaller one.

Electricity (gotta love my creative nomenclature): This is a straight
shooting string of electricity that looks vaguely like lightning striking.
At three steams, this is an amazing weapon, capable of decimating hordes
of enemies very quickly.  However, it does not have great range, only
going about halfway across the screen.  Use it carefully and you will be
rewarded.  Also another to keep at three streams if you can.  The icon for
this powerup is two little lightning bolts.

Smoke: This shoots little puffs of something or other which are apparently
damaging to enemies.  This is the most powerful and widest weapon at one
stream.  However, I find myself avoiding this powerup at all costs, and
here's why: A) It has a terrible fire rate.  This kills its usefulness, as
it cannot destroy an onslaught of weak enemies fast enough to keep you
alive, or even hit most bosses with any frequency.  B) It doesn't improve.
That's right, no matter how many pretty little cupcakes you snag, you will
never see an improvement in the area, speed, or power of this weapon.  I
never use this weapon, but if it works for you, have fun.  The icon for
this powerup is a little puff of whatever it is.

Guardian Angels: Okay, they might not be angels, but they remind me of the
angel from Actraiser.  These act a bit like interceptors in Starcraft.
They constantly fly out from somewhere on your body (I like to think it's
your pants.  Don't know why) on suicide missions to destroy any enemies on
the screen.  They actually home in on enemies, very effectively, i might
add.  These make the game MUCH easier, though you may not notice while you
have them, you will notice that the game becomes much harder without them.
The icon for this powerup is one of the little angel-esque creatures.

III. Walkthrough
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

This introduction is shared by many games, good ones and horrendously
terribble ones.  Yes, I am speaking of the girlfriend or reasonable
facsimile being taken by an unknown evil for unknown reason (well, perhaps
it IS known, but you'd have to know Japanese).  After this short and
hilariously cheesy introduction, you will begin what you actually came
for.  The menu screen.  Kidding, kidding.  Hit start and you shall begin
the wonderful little game which is Flying Hero!  *cue stifled giggles*

This first little Act begins in a pleasant little grassy area which seems
to be infested with monkeys, of the flying and jumping variety.  But first
let us pause to examine the screen.  In the bottom left corner, you will
see your lives, and in the bottom right corner, your bombs.  Pay attention
to these numbers, as they will be important throughout the game.  In the
upper right is your score, a series of zeroes at this point, but soon to
be much larger.  And flying front and center is the flying hero himself,
the protaginist of our adventure, who enjoys flying with his magical
winged hat, and spitting blue balls at flying animals.  Take this time to
hold down B.  Never let go of it.  Now, you may release the button on
special occasions, such as bomb dropping, but any time you can see an
enemy, you will probably have it held.  Yes, you could use a turbo
controller, but that would be cheap (he says as he clicks "Save State").

You will see that all the little birdies are overjoyed that you have come
to play with them (or scared from the noises you are making.  One or the
other).  These are not enemies, so just relax.  Once you reach the path, a
strange, blue-haired sorceress type will summon some bats to suck your
blood.  Or something.  Hold B and move from side to side to dispatch each
set as they appear.  If you want, you can fly around the third set pretty
easily, just go up and right quickly to avoid having to shoot them at
    close range.

Once you pass a fence, you will find yourself faced with some rather
disturbing flying monkeys.  Continue to hold B and move in front of each
as it comes.  You should spot a cupcake as you continue, be sure to snag
    it.

The next section is a wave of beetles, a bit faster than the monkeys, but
still easily destroyed.  Try to stay on the right side of the screen at
    first, then move across.

The next section is a bit tough, with monkeys AND beetles.  Just stay at
the bottom of the screen, and be sure to snag the two cupcakes hiding in
balloons as you go.  You will soon see a balloon containing a Smoke
powerup.  I usually avoid it, but you can grab it if you wish.  The next
    balloon is another cupcake.

The next section is jumping monkeys, which toss nuts at you.  Not much of
a problem if you held on to your Rapid Fire and didn't get the Smoke.
This is followed by some crows who are a nice break, easily defeated.
An electricity powerup is in the next balloon, get it if you have more
than one stream, or have the Smoke weapon at the moment.  If you have a
single stream of Rapid Fire, leave the electricity alone.

Several bats appear after this from behind, so stay to the center of the
screen, and keep firing.  They shouldn't be a problem.  Try to get the
balloon, which contains a cupcake.  The next balloon has a Rapid Fire
Powerup.  The balloon after that has Guardian Angels, so don't miss it.

Soon you will see your first boss of the game materializing.  He is a
giant goofy looking bat.  Just keep firing straight at him, and when he
sends out his bat minions, kill them or avoid them.  He will occasionally
stop moving side to side and be perfectly still.  This means he is about
to dive at you.  Try to move to one side and up quickly.  A cupcake or two
as well as a bomb should appear in balloons as you fight him.  He should
    be gone in short time.

The next section is filled with beehives.  They alternate sides, so just
go from one side to the other, destroying each beehive aas you pass.  As
you come out the end, a balloon with an electricity powerup should appear.
The next section is a mix of monkeys and beetles, and more importantly, a
triple cupcake.  After the triple cupcake, two more cupcakes will shortly
    follow.

Soon you will reach the shore.  Crows and monkeys are the main enemies in
this area.  Watch out for a cupcake and a Smoke powerup.  After you cross
the ocean (rather small one), you will reach what I can only assume is the
moon.  After you kill a few bats, you will arrive at your next boss fight.

This enemy might seem familiar.  She will summon a few flocks of crows.
Kill these and wait until she does some creepy metamorphosis thing and the
screen goes black.  She will begin to summon rocks.  Keep firing to keep
these away, and perhaps drop a few bombs on the lady herself if you have
trouble.  Electricity with three streams is quite effective here.  A few
helper powerups will drop down during the fight, among them a cupcake and
a Guardian Angel.  Eventually she will go down.

Now you will see a lovely little message saying Act 1 Clear!
Congratulations, you have finished the first section of the game.
