Planet - The planet or chain of planets in analysis
Red - Red powerups which enhance your main weapon (straight)
Blue - Blue powerups which give/enhance your shield
Green - Green powerups which enhance your secondary weapon (diagonals)
R. Oct. - Red octagons which toggles your weapon between beam/wave (wave penetrates enemies)
Orange - Orange powerups which gives you an extra life
Each big X marks a single appearance in that level for a powerup.
Little x's imply a random chance of that powerup appearing.
So, the (#) means maximum number of powerups possible.
