Please do not reproduce for profit without my consent. You won't be getting
much profit anyway, but that's not the point. This took time and effort, and
I just wanted to save a memory of an old game and the odd solutions any way I
could. Please send me an email referring to me and this guide by name if
you'd like to post it on your site.

================================

 1. INTRODUCTION

BS Panel de Pon(BPdP) is an intuitive puzzle game where you mostly just flip
blocks around, trying for a 3-up or 3-across of the same color. And getting a
combination or pair of a 4- or 5-in-a-row gets you extra neat stuff. But it's
a lot more than that! You have regular game modes, time modes and a very nice
puzzle mode. The game even features a pause for long/creative/clever
combinations. The graphics and sound are remarkable too and don't take away
from the challenge. I would recommend this game highly, but if you're reading
the FAQ you've probably already played it. That old saw about Othello applies
here--5 minutes to learn, a lifetime to master. OK, not a lifetime, as there
are other cool block drop games to play. But this one will keep you busy and
entertained, and it is up there in my book with Star Sweep for simplicity and
how absorbing it can be.

You don't need a translation patch to play this game, but one is available at
romhacking.net thanks to Zuqkeo. You need a ROM without a header for the
translation patch to work.

 2. CONTROLS AND RULES

You control a pair of squares that show which blocks you can flip inside your
6x12 well. So you have 5x12 possible squares. Place the cursor(s) over the
blocks(or a block and a space) and watch the blocks flip. The game then works
as follows:

1) drop all blocks that are not in place. For instance, moving a block and a
space can create a vacuum above where the block was, or your block may drop.
2) check for matches. If there are none, stop.
3) make everything fall, one block at a time.
4) stop when something hits the bottom
5) goto 2

In other words, blocks can stay in midair when the game checks for matches.
In fact, when blocks are vanishing, you can flip other blocks and get them in
position for a big combination.

L or R will speed up how blocks appear in non-puzzle mode. This is actually
very useful in time trial mode, where if you stop the clock with a combo, you
cannot create point scoring matches because nothing new appears on its own.

Use the demos to see how to move pieces after one match appears to make a
chain. Basically you need to place a piece over the chain to ensure it is
counted in the next bit.

Also note that you can see the next row about to appear, which can be a
valuable hint.

 3. STAGECLEAR, TRIAL, ENDLESS AND 1 VS MODES

   3-1. STAGECLEAR MODE

In this you must survive two minutes per stage. With each stage survived, the
rows go up faster, and you have less time when they get to the top. After
round 3, you have a bonus round facing ??.

Points don't matter here--10 per block, regardless. You get 1 for each time
the blocks go up. If you push up, you forfeit any slowing bonus you get from
combos/chains.

Each round took me about 75 seconds early on. That went up, as I needed to
make use of the tactic below. Note that you can use a 3-match as a VERY brief
pause, but be prepared to swerve back to where you make an extended
combo/chain.

You can try the basic strategy here, which is to set up a 4-combo in one
place and then work on the other side. When the blocks at the top start to
wobble, make the 4 and get 5 seconds. Then clear out what you can. You should
always make sure that you clear out the top bits that are wobbling, too, as
they may cause you to lose immediately when the pause stops.

Thus, whenever you get a 4-combo, or are in place for one, don't put it
together right away. Maybe during the time-out you can turn it into a
potential 5 or even more. But you will want to tamp down the blocks as much
as you can--whatever matches, go with it. That is the basic strategy. You can
try it here, as it is no big deal.

"I'm impressed you made it this far, but if you can't do combos&chains,
it's foolish to come against me!
"Your eyes will well up tears of regret soon!"

Thanks to Zuqkeo for translating the hint at the end here: at the 2 player
stage select, press L and R on controllers 1 and 2 at the same time to play
as the Goddess or Demon King.

   3-2. TRIAL MODE

The same strategies as above work here, except you keep wanting to push
everything to the top when the blocks are frozen. You also don't want to wait
on a 4-combo--you can push blocks up to the top to get the extended wait,
though. With some care, you should break the high score of 2000.

   3-3. ENDLESS MODE

See 3-2 only if you are playing for survival, then don't push blocks up when
the background is frozen. As before, the real key is waiting to form a 4-
match til the blocks get to the top. Be careful not to disrupt it. You don't
get any more points for doing things too quickly, so wait and plot.

   3-4. VS MODE

This really isn't too bad as the computer isn't terribly smart. I found the
best sort of thing to form is a 5, which makes a block across all the top.
Form an L or a T to make it. If you can mix in a 3 with it, or a combo, do
so. It is worth the wait to put it together. Don't randomly match stuff
unless you need to get to the top bunkers that your opponent has had drop on
you. You have 2 continues.

There are ten levels total, listed below. The last two are considerably more
difficult. Don't worry if you can't win right away. When the game starts
going faster, the enemies are more likely to get tripped up.

1. Flower Stage (Windy)
 "Windy remembered gentleness!"
2. Ice Stage(Sherbet)
 "Sherbet and Lip became friends!"
3. Forest Stage(Thiana)
 "Thiana's caring heart returned!"
4. Jewel Stage(Ruby)
"Ruby began to like Lip a lot!"
5. Water Stage(Elias)
"Elias returned to her gentle self!"
6. Fire Stage(Flare)
 "Flare befriended Lip!"
7. Sea Stage(Neris)
"Neris got her ability to care back!"
8. Moon Stage(Selene)
 "Selene befriended everyone!"

E-everyone! It's a good thing we're all safe now!
Let's go and beat those monsters!

You can play as whoever you want. It doesn't seem to make much difference.

9. Death Mountain(Phoenix)
"Argh! It seems they managed to lift the spell!
"Nothin' I can do now, but beat you all up!"
"We're free of the spell. Let us fight for you!"

"How did the likes of you defeat me!?
 "Gyiiii"

10. Dragon
"My magic ought to finish off you pitiful brats.
"If you defeat me, I'll return to my eternal slumber..."

 "I did not expect this...
 "Gwaaaa!"

"Great, you managed to clear this difficulty! Challenge the next level!"
"There's nothing here...even if you wait very long! Please quit! (heart)!"
"Press reset! Let's do the next level's challenge!"

 4. PUZZLE MODE

There are 120 puzzles in puzzle mode--6 rounds of 10 in regular and the same
in bonus.

There isn't much in the way of strategy that hasn't been covered earlier or
isn't related strictly to arithmetic. Around halfway through the levels
switch from the obvious way works to the obvious way almost works.

Frequently you need to calculate how many moves it would take to move a
certain color into position--start with the one with the fewest number--then
work backwards from there. But the main hard strategy points I found were as
follows:

If you have 4 or 5 of one color, strive to line them up so they will fall
into place. 5 has a few ways to do things(!=last to place):

xx!xx

 x x!x xx!
xx!  x    x or mirrors or rotations.

There are a few ways to get 4's, too.

         xx
x!xx or xxyy!

Also, if you have 6 of 1 color, be sure NOT to make a 4 or 5.

If you have 3 of one color, then you should try to determine if a vertical or
horizontal is more practical, then set things up so they fall into place.
Also, pieces at the top are less manipulable than those on the bottom, so
work on arranging the bottom first and then see what is left. Note if you
have 2 of 1 piece on the bottom, you probably will knock it off with
horizontal moves.

 6. CREDITS

Thanks to the usual GameFAQs gang, current and emeritus. They know who they
are, and you should, too, because they get/got some SERIOUS writing done.
Good people too--bloomer, falsehead, Sashanan, Masters, Retro, Snow
Dragon/Brui5ed Ego, ZoopSoul, War Doc, Brian Sulpher, AdamL, odino, JDog,
Lagoona, Da Hui and others I forgot. OK, even Hydrophant in his current not-
yet-banned message board incarnation, even if he disses us all. I am not part
of his gang, but I want him to be part of mine.
Thanks to Zuqkeo for translating this very fun game.
Thanks to Romhacking.net for hosting the translation.
The zsnesw folks for making a great emulator so I could play this.
