I: Opening
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Once in every lifetime, a game comes along.  A game that changes the way we look at the
world.  A game that makes us look at our lives and wonder what we've been doing all these
years.  A game that just amazes you, and makes you say nothing but, "Wow."

This is not that game.

However, it is a lot of fun, and a good way to kill some time!  Sure, it might not
be the highest quality, with the best graphics, and the fastest gameplay, but it certainly
is fun!  And isn't that what video games are all about?

I've written this FAQ just because nobody else has really taken the time.  It's a simple
little game, but it's got a couple difficult points...and I'm here to try and clear the
path!

---------------------------------------------------------------------
II: Story
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, like they say, there's two sides to every story.  This isn't any different...there's
my story...and the instruction booklet's story!  Here's what the book has to say:

******************
"Well, it looks like just another quiet afternoon down at the local gym.  Our two friends,
Rick (better known as Hack) and Doug (a.k.a. Slash) are busy coaching their trainees in
the
finer points of self-defense...'cause it's a tough world out there in the streets of
Bayside City.  These guys know all the moves, from martial arts to pro wrestling
throws -- and they don't hesitate to use 'em.  Hey, they're not called the Brawl Brothers
for nothing!"

"But wait a minute, maybe things aren't so quiet after all...we've got some serious
trouble
on our hands.  The gym's three best fighters have just been kidnapped!  You know who I
mean -- Lord J., Kazan, and Wendy.  Lord J.'s the really big guy with a black belt in
karate.  Kazan is the ninja master.  He's fast on his feet, but carries a sword with him
at all times...just in case.  And Wendy, well, she's a lot tougher than she looks -- no
doubt about it, this girl can hold her own with the best of them."

"Uh oh, more bad news, dudes -- the kidnappers belong to a gang of thugs run by this
psycho called Dieter.  Believe me when I say the guy is way, way out there.  He's got all
these scientists working for him, creating hundreds of clones from the people he kidnaps.
Dieter uses the clones as his own personal army, so naturally they're really strong...and
really nasty.  Who knows what evil plans lurk in that demented mind of his?  So far
nobody's
been able to stop him, but I get the feeling he's messing with the wrong crowd this time!"

"Back in Bayside City, Hack and Slash are making their plans.  They've got what it takes,
and they're ready for the fight of their life.  With a little luck they can rescue their
friends, then put an end to Dieter and his gang once and for all.  Yeah, those scum thugs
better look out...there won't be much left of them when the Brawl Brothers get through!"
******************

And that's the way it is...or so the instruction booklet would lead you to believe! Here's
my take on things.

There's a bad guy, by the name of Dieter.  Since his parents never showed him enough
love (it's one of those villain things), he's decided to make an army of evil clones.
Of course, this didn't affect our heroes...until three of them turned up missing! So, you
take the two remaining heroes (you can actually pick two from all five of them...THEN they
turn up missing...suspicious, eh?) and go out to rescue your friends, destroy their evil
clones, and basically bash the bad guy, and all his evil minions.

And the cloning bit gives a great excuse to why you fight a lot of the same guys during
the trip!

On a side note, fans of the unofficial prequel to Brawl Brothers, "Rival Turf", know that
Rick and Doug were nowhere NEAR our heroes' names...if, in fact, they are the same
heroes...WHICH they are...but whoever wrote the story could argue the fact that it's a
DIFFERENT two guys who look exactly like the same guys from the other....but I'm rambling.
Most likely, they were looking to get away from the fact that, in Rival Turf, they named
the big guy "Oozy".

'Nuff said.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
III: Gameplay
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The gameplay in this one's pretty basic.  You start by picking your two characters.  In
two player mode, each gets one.  In one player mode, when you continue, you have the
choice to change.  Each time you finish a level, you get another character to choose
from, depending on who you rescued.  Pick up weapons, bash bad guys, rescue your friends,
and all together survive!  That's the way the game's played!

---------------------------------------------------------------------
IV: Characters
---------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hack": Backstreet Brawler

Armed with only his stylish bomber jacket, his boyish good looks, and somebody else to
do the fighting for him, he takes the streets in search of his friends!

Honestly, Hack's not a bad fighter.  He's got a good mix of speed and power...he's pretty
much the basic "inbetweener"!  If you want a guy who can hold his own, Hack's your man!

"Slash": Professional Wrestler

This guy's living proof that REAL men wear berets!

But honestly, although the booklet makes no mention, this guy was designed total pro
wrestler.  From his size, to his moves, to the way his boots look just like a pro
wrestler's, he's got the style!  Of course, he's built the way most basic American pro
wrestlers are...or at least, used to be!  Big, and strong.  This guy does not have a lot
of speed behind him, but his moves are powerful, and he's usually able to get out of tight
situations!  Definitely a character for the experienced...deadly in the right hands!

"Lord J.": Karate/Judo Master

Because every good martial artist looks good in purple!

This guy's an interesting one...at his size, he decided to take up the martial arts?
Being
BIGGER than the big man, Slash, you'd think he'd just be able to muscle his way through
life! But no, he's taken up the martial arts...and there's a bit of confusion over just
which one!  The instruction booklet says karate...but I, personally, think his moves look
more like judo...either way, he's not a bad guy!  He has more speed than Slash, but not
quite as much power...are you SURE he's had martial arts training?  I found myself having
a lot of problems with Lord J. for some reason!  Perhaps he might fit someone else's
playing style...in my opinion, if you want to win, keep him on the shelf!

"Kazan": Ninja

Okay...element of surprise, element of surprise...how about I wear all green? THAT'LL give
me the ability to sneak up on my enemies!

Augh...a green suit with red shoes...is it any wonder he has to hang out with these guys
instead of getting himself any good ninja work?  Looks like a graduate from the "Bozo The
Clown School of Ninjas"...but all jokes aside, he's not a bad fighter!  He's got the speed
on his side, which is nice, and a triple jump, which can get him out of a lot of problems!
If you practice with him, he could probably take you all the way...he's good as backup in
two player mode!  If only you could change his outfit...

******************

"Wendy": Professional Wrestler

Finally, a fighter who's NOT a disgrace...and she's female!

The female of the group strikes a chord, and gives us a fighter who we DON'T feel too much
like laughing at!  She looks a little silly, but remember that it's her wrestling getup,
and it's fine!  And she DOESN'T come across as a bimbo!  Woohoo!  As far as her fighting
goes, she's definitely one for speed...in a crowd, she's likely to get beaten to a pulp,
unless she's got some backup!  Definitely a candidate for two player mode...when going it
alone, stick to the heavier guns!

---------------------------------------------------------------------
V: Weapons and Foods
---------------------------------------------------------------------

I decided to put both of these in the same section because, actually, foods can be
used as weapons!  Definitely an interesting addition...after you pick up food with the
punch button, use the L or R buttons on top of the controller to throw the food at
your enemies!  It does decent damage...and works well in a pinch!  All the weapons are
pretty much all just as damaging as far as I can tell...but here's the list!

******************
Weapons
******************

Sledge Hammer/Steel Pipe/Spiked Bat: All pretty much the same weapon, just looking
different! They have a decent range, and do decent damage, and they continue to exist
until
you've dropped them three times!  You can throw these weapons using the L/R buttons on
top of the controller, as well!

Shotgun: For a shotgun, the damage isn't all that great...however, it's a distance weapon,
and it has unlimited shots! It definitely helps to keep enemies at range...however,
sometimes it's tough to line up the shot...be careful when using it!

Knife/Rock/Dumbell/Bomb: All these weapons are made solely for throwing...if you use the
punch button to throw them, they barrel through all the enemies, fly off the screen, and
don't come back! My advice would be this...use the L/R buttons on top of the controller
to throw them twice, then they'll bounce back, and you can pick them up again...the third
time, they would disappear anyways, so use the punch button to throw them the third time!

******************
Foods
******************

First Aid Kit/Chicken Leg: Both of these items restore all of your life...save these
for emergencies! And yes, I know that the First Aid Kit is NOT for eating...but hey, it's
much easier to put it in the foods generalization!

Can of Juice/Piece of Cheese: Both of these tasty items restore half of your health!

Candy Bar/Pancakes: These sweet treats restore 25% of your health!

---------------------------------------------------------------------
VI: Enemies
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Zero: The big lackeys of Brawl Brothers!  These guys are usually easy to fight...don't
let them surround you, though, or you'll be sorry!

Heckler/Flynn: These guys, although basic, are a bit more dangerous...they carry guns and
bombs! However, most of the time, you'll see them prepare to shoot...and they can hit
other
enemies! Ahh, the fun of gun follies...

Led Hed: A man suited in a robot harness...can be a tough customer, due to a lot of life,
and a nasty throw move!  If they lift you by your collar and shake, you can kiss a decent
slice of your life goodbye!

Phantom: These guys are pretty fast...kill them quick, and you've got no problem...if they
hang around, THEN you've got a problem!

Fnord/Cyberhed: The silly name disguises a VERY tough fighter...they'll throw you every
chance they
get, they're fast, and they're powerful!  Make sure to give these guys plenty of room...if
you get too close, they'll make you pay!  And be careful of the sliding kick...you can't
stop it, only avoid it!

Butch: Big men, big power.  Just take care of them quickly, like the Phantoms, and they
shouldn't be a problem!  Their lack of speed makes it easy to ignore them for last!
However, if they throw you, you won't soon forget it!

Cloned Friends: Those guys that you fight at the ends of levels aren't REALLY your
friends,
they're evil cloned versions of them that Dieter has made!  But once you've destroyed
them,
you'll find your real friends not far away!

Dieter: The evil man...the bad guy...Mr. Nasty!  Although he seems to have a thing for
nail care and pretty flowers, he'll stop at nothing to take you out!  Watch for his three
section
nunchaku...it's deadly!

---------------------------------------------------------------------
VII: Run Through
---------------------------------------------------------------------

******************
Bayside City
******************

Here, you'll be assaulted by Zeros and Hecklers.  Pretty simple stuff, those Zeros!
Basically, they're fighter fodder!  Just don't let them gang up on you, and you should
be okay!  The closer you get to the bridge, some Hecklers will join the fight...watch out
for their guns!  You should see them pump the gun before they fire...if you move out of
the way, they're liable to hit other enemies!  However, I'd suggest taking them out first
here, since they're the biggest danger.

******************
Bridge
******************

As soon as you see a rock on the ground, you'll know it's onto the bridge!  Always
remember,
when using weapons that you can only throw, use the L/R buttons on top of the controller
to throw it twice...it gives you more use!  After a few Zeros, you come across a new
enemy!
Actually, an old enemy with a new name...Flynn!  The same as the Hecklers...just watch out
for the guns!  Shortly after, you'll see a new, rather daunting enemy...Led Hed!  A man
outfitted in an interesting looking robot harness...watch out for these guys, they can be
dangerous!  Try not to let them grab you...if they do, they'll shake you by the collar,
and cause a lot of damage!  Ah HA!  What's that up ahead? A spiked baseball bat!  Fun!
Go ahead and show as many enemies as you can how well you can hit those homers!   A bit
further, yet another new enemy shows up...Phantom!  Their speed can give them quite an
advantage...just make sure you take care of them as soon as possible!  Pretty soon, you'll
notice a helicopter flying by...odd!  Apparently these guys don't want you making it
anywhere...they've got a machine gunner hanging out the side door of the helicopter!
Basically, there's nothing you can do about him.  Just keep fighting, and avoid his shots,
which come in a strafing pattern across the screen...remember, when in doubt, jump!  And
yes, he'll also shoot his friends...and he seems to do it a lot!  Continue fighting, and
moving on!  Uh oh...is it bad when a bridge blows up under you?  Time to find out!

******************
Sewers
******************

The sewers are one big maze.  This can be problematic!  Always remember, when you see an
opening in the background, it's not just the background, you can go through it!  And you
have to go through a couple to get through this maze!  At the entrance, you'll fight
some Led Heds...keep away from the throw, and you should be fine! Now, you're inside.
See that "A" on the wall?  That's so you can keep track of where you're at!  Now, in "A"
part of the sewers, you're fighting Zeros and Led Heds...if you keep your guard up, it
should be no problem!  In Section "B", you'll be fighting mostly a new enemy...Fnord and
Cyberhed!  These guys are NOT to be taken lightly...they're fast, strong, and dangerous!
Only practice will get you past these guys easily...and even then, they'll usually pull
out
all the stops!  Section "C" is mostly a hangout for Hecklers and Flynns. You've fought
these
guys before...you know the drill!  And in Section "D", also known as "The Way Out", you'll
be fighting a good mix of all the enemies you've faced already!  They're definitely tough,
so don't let up your guard!

Now, the best way through this level (in my opinion), is to take the first door in "A"
section, which skips you to "C" section...then take the second door you come across in
"C" section, which takes you to "D" section, then fight your way through to the end!  That
lets you avoid "B" section, which is a pretty dangerous place!  Now, of course, there are
several doors left unexplored, so let me go through a list, and tell you what door goes
where!

"A" section: First door goes to "C", Second door goes to "B"

"B" section: First door goes to "A", Second door goes to "C"

"C" section: First door goes to "B", Second door goes to "D", Third door goes to "A"

"D" section: First door goes to "A", Ladder at end goes to outside!

Now how's THAT for coverage?

The ladder at the end of "D" section will take you out to a boss battle.  The boss you
face is random, so coverage for all the bosses will take place in a later section!

******************
Jungle
******************

Before this level begins, notice that you can now choose characters again, but you've
got the friend you've just rescued along as well!  Take advantage of new characters!

The enemies you've fought against are going to continue showing up...that's basically
going
to be old hat from here on in!  Now you're trekking through the jungle!  Ooh, fun!  The
main thing about this level are those glowing circles on the ground.  Wonder what those
are?
Land mines!  Such fun, indeed!  Just avoid them.  A fun thing to do is to throw your
enemies
onto them, but the hit detection for that isn't the greatest...they're also pretty smart
about not walking over them!  At least...MOST of the enemies!

******************
Lift
******************

The first thing you'll see on the lift is a first aid kit...grab it!  It'll probably be
helpful to you by now!  See that space at the left end of the lift?  It's a GREAT help to
you!  All you have to do is have somebody with a throw that sends an enemy flying, and
toss them over the edge!  Or, you can even knock them over!  As long as they go off the
lift, it's bye-bye enemy!  And the best part is, if you fall off, you don't die!  You DO
get hurt, but it's not instant death!  You've just got to love being the hero...

******************
Air Terminal
******************

Most of the enemies here are Hecklers and Flynns, with a few other enemies thrown in!
However, these gunmen are a little better armed...in addition to shotguns, they have
incendiary bombs!  You can see them kneel before they throw them...be sure to get out of
the way!  Later on in the level, you get to have an interesting experience...blowing up a
helicopter...with your bare hands!  And to think, they made a bonus level out of stuff
like that in Final Fight...then, after the helicopter, on to the boss!

******************
Roofs
******************

Finally, a new enemy comes along!  One by the name of Butch...big guys, with big
aspirations!  Personally, I never found Butch to be too hard...of course, I didn't have
much experience with his throws, either!  As long as you stay out of arm's reach with
them,
you're okay!  And since you're fighting on rooftops, be prepared for a lot of falls!
Luckily, it's the same thing as the lift...bad guys suffer, good guys get saved!  If
you're
fighting with Lord J. or Slash, be prepared for some tough jumps...otherwise, have fun!
And always remember Kazan's triple jump!

A lot of times, the enemies on the rooftops will be shuffling around, trying to get a shot
at you, and just fall off the edge...don't argue it, just give them a quick "Ha ha!" and
get
back to defending yourself!  At the end of the level, you jump off the rooftops...right
where you were just throwing enemies!  I tell you, it's good to be the hero!

******************
Abandoned Gym
******************

This place starts off pretty much like everywhere else...just with the enemies being a
lot harder!  Retribuation for throwing half of Deiter's army off of the rooftops, I
suppose!
Watch for enemies to jump out of lockers here...it's basically just another way to get
them
onscreen, but still, watch out for them!  Later, you'll go into an elevator...you'll want
to go up to Floor 15 first, where there's a Phantom waiting for you!  Dispatch him, then
get back into the elevator...you can only go down to level B1, which is where you want
to be!  Okay, so you don't WANT to be here, but you NEED to be here!

******************
Underground Base
******************

Two words...electrified floors!  These are fun to antagonize the enemies with...just make
sure you don't get knocked onto them accidentaly!  You'll fight very hard in this
level...it
won't be easy, but it will be worth it!  At the end of this part, you'll get in another
elevator...down to B4 is the way to go!

More electrified floors...then another elevator! Looks like next stop: Third floor! Hey,
another Heckler, waiting for us with a nice surprise!  That was easy enough...everyone
back in the elevator! Let's see...up to 13, or down to B1...gee, doesn't B1 sound
familiar? Let's try 13 next!

Wow...yet more electrified floors!  You know, if you haven't found out yet, Butch can't
jump far enough to get over...it's fun to have him be the last enemy in a group, then get
behind an electrified floor, and watch the fun!  Usually, he's too stupid to try to go
around!

Hmm...yet another elevator...floor six, or floor fourteen?  Well, since we've been to six
already, fourteen it is!  Wow, how thoughtful!  Led Hed had a party planned for us!  Well,
after that fun little excursion, back in the elevator we go!  And there's no place to
go but B6!  Sounds like a fun, dank little corner of the universe!  Off we go!  Wow!
Fancy meeting Butch here!  These chance meetings are getting a little too common for my
tastes...sigh...back in the elevator we go!  Let's see...up to B4, where we've been B4?
Hehe...I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist!  Nope...down to B12 for us! Could we get any
lower?

The giant jet in the background tells me that we're not too far from Dieter!  Now, all
we've got to do is fight through incredibly difficult hordes of minions...can we do that?
I certainly hope so!  That first aid kit will help quite a bit...now that we've fought
through hordes of enemies, there's a pair of double doors....and they lead to another boss
fight!

******************
Air Fortress "Adler"
******************

Well, we've gotten everyone back...and there she is...the "Adler"!  Dieter's personal
airship!  Let's see if we can't pay him a visit, shall we?

Wow...you know, I thought it would've been a lot harder keeping my balance along the top
of this jet...I mean, I've never really stood on top of many jets, but when you're
hurdling through the air at thousands of miles per hour....bah, I could just be wrong!

The fight continues...and you continue to fight!  There's a shotgun up here which usually
proves quite helpful for me in keeping the nastys at bay!  As long as you keep them all
on one side, and don't let up on the cover fire, it should be pretty useful!

After a long and arduous fight, you drop into the cargo hold of the ship!  Listen to that
music!  Ever heard it before?  If you spent long hours playing "Rival Turf", the
unofficial
prequel to this game, than you certainly have!  That was the music that played throughout
the first level!  And if this is your first taste of this series...well, this reference
isn't going to make a whole lot of sense to you.

Now, the cargo hold doesn't have a lot of room to maneuver...vertical movement is all
but naught.  It's going to take a LOT of skill to beat the enemies coming at you....get
them first is the only strategy that can really work here!  That, and get a hold of a
shotgun as soon as you can!  In enclosed spaces like this, it can be helpful...maybe even
a lifesaver!

Phew...now to a door at the back of the cargo hold...what lies in wait after this long,
hard fight through the Adler?  Hmm...I'm not quite sure what!  There are some skeletons in
the back of THIS hold...maybe I took a wrong turn somewhere!  Needless to say, the
fight's not getting any easier...one wrong move, and you may end up one of those skeletons
in the hold!  Well, fought through this doorway....and....who is that guy?  There's a guy
behind a cage, typing feverishly at some computer consoles...wonder who he is?  But
there's
no time to wonder...enemies are attacking from all sides!

Another wave of enemies down...and another room....what is this place?  More enemies...and
a big pair of double doors....and inside...this must be Dieter!  After he blows all his
hot air, it's time
for a fight....good luck, you'll need it!

******************
Ending
******************

And now, it's time to sit back and watch the Adler go down...but did the Brawl Brothers
and friends make it out alive?  Only time will tell...well, that, and the ending!

---------------------------------------------------------------------
VIII: Boss Strategies
---------------------------------------------------------------------

******************
Hack Strategy
******************

Looks like this cage match is scheduled for one fall...the fall of either you, or Hack!
Hack is a lot like his normal self, only he's got a fireball kick that resembles Slash's!
The only difference is that his moves a lot horizontally, while Slash's moves a lot
vertically!  Watch out for it!  He's also been known to throw fireballs...if he makes a
motion, make sure to move out of the way!  Other than those moves, it should be
business as usual!

******************
Slash Strategy
******************

If you don't like the looks of this rickety lift, you shouldn't...it's home to the evil
clone of the heavy hitter of the group, Slash!  He still loves his throws...and he loves
his Lighter Fire, as well!  And he's got a move here he doesn't normally use...he jumps
up in the air, and comes down with a flaming foot!  THAT move should most likely be
avoided!
Hit and run tactics definitely deserve to be used here...and get in a throw whenever you
can!

******************
Lord J. Strategy
******************

Basically, Lord J. loves to throw.  That's mostly the extent of his fighting.  Give him
the old hit and run tactic, and he should be done before you know it!  However, the more
you hurt him, the faster he seems to move...just keep up the fight, and try to stay away
from his throws!

******************
Kazan Strategy
******************

Kazan is stuck to the wall when you first come in...after a bit of fighting, and realizing
he's a worthy opponent, he pulls out a trick...he throws out his hands, disappears...and
the room turns!  The spikes on the walls have now become spikes on the floor...avoid them!
They're painful!  Kazan also loves to throw throwing stars...avoid those, as well!  All
his dirty tricks, combined with his speed, make Kazan a difficult opponent!  Just keep
wearing him down, and you should be victorious!

******************
Wendy Strategy
******************

Ahh, a familiar sight for Wendy...the wrestling ring, and hundreds of rowdy fans!  Wait,
is that guy in the back holding...a chainsaw?  Okay, we'd better make this quick!  Wendy's
pretty basic, but sometimes she loves to go to the top rope!  You can't knock her off,
just wait for her to jump off, avoid the missle dropkick, and attack!  Just keep on her,
and she should be done in no time!

******************
Dieter Strategy
******************

When he twirls all of his nunchaku segments, he's invincible...when he's not, get in
close,
punch a couple times, and throw him!  Keep him confused!  When he's down to his last life
bar, the nunchaku will break, and he'll be going hand to hand!  BUT, he'll pick up this
odd
move, where he glows, and a golem type spirit goes across the screen!  It's easy to avoid,
just don't be on the same level as he is!  Then keep up the attack, and he should be gone!
Victory is yours!

IX: Game Secrets
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The Japanese Version of Brawl Brothers is right inside the American game!  It's easy to
get to!  All you have to do is, at the screen with the Jaleco logo, press B, A, X, and Y
repeatedly, in that order!  If you hear a strange noise, then a black and white screen
appears...press start, then press down three times!  Choose your options, then start the
game!  It's a beautiful thing!

X: Other Things (stuff I wasn't sure where to put)
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Angry Mode: This is interesting!  In Angry Mode, if you take enough damage, you'll start
flashing!  You're then invincible, and some throws will send enemies flying!  It
definitely
makes life better, and the invincibility is very helpful!

Down Attack: Sometimes, when an enemy is down, and you press the punch button while you're
over him, you'll do some sort of stomp or crush attack!  The only problem is, it's
difficult to get it lined up...so it ends up being more of a random thing than anything
else!
