1. REVISION HISTORY
=========================================================================
VERSION 1.0 (January 24th, 2002) - some levels and boss strategies are
are missing in the walkthrough but will be added soon.
VERSION 1.2 (February 16th, 2002) - fixed a ton of spelling errors
and re-organized a few parts of the faq
=========================================================================
2. INTRODUCTION
=========================================================================
So why did I decide to write a FAQ about such an old game that I dont even
like that much? Well for one, this is my first FAQ and I figure
I might as well start off somewhere small , eventually working my
way up to the likes of the newer, more complex games. Plus I saw this game
on my shelf, looking all dusty and never played..so why not?? This FAQ
pretty much covers the entire BIOMETAL game. You'll find everything from
character BIO's to full walkthroughs of each level and I promise you the
complete version will be up and running before you even realize this FAQ
was ever made. If anyone has any questions about this game, myself, and
or has tips that I have missed, feel free to email me at
[email protected] and I'll try to reply back as quickly as
possible.
=========================================================================
3. OPTIONS
=========================================================================
Once you have seen enough of the main menu, click into the options and
you should see this:
GAME LEVEL - EASY: Bosses have a small amount of life
NORMAL: Bosses have a medium amount of life and there are
a few more enemies on screen than on easy
HARD: Not much of a difference from medium difficulty
CONTROL PAD - B: fires primary weapon
Y: GAM charge
R: GAM smash
A: GAM spread
SOUND MODE - choose between stereo or monaural audio settings
TRACK - choose between 7 different tracks found within the game
SOUND FX - Listen to 31 different sound effects found within the game
=========================================================================
4. CONTROLS (DETAILED)
=========================================================================
B BUTTON: this fires your primary weapon as well as any missles that you've
picked up along the way. Primary weapons include the plasma cannon you start off
with as well as any of the upgrades that you have picked up by shooting the
floating ships.
Y BUTTON: what the GAM charge does is it unleashed about 5 different blue energy
spheres that rotate around your ship. This is helpful for many reasons basically
because while the GAM is activated (without firing it at enemies) you are
invincible, unless an enemy ship runs directly into you. This also means that
none of the enemies shots can penetrate your ship. However you are not completely
invincible during boss fights since their weapons are much more powerful than a drones.
**note** In the later stages there are enemies who fire projectiles that CAN
penetrate your ships GAM. An example of this would be the flame throwing enemies
of stage 3 so be careful.
R BUTTON: this button allows you to fire the blue spheres that surround your
ship when you charge up the GAM with the Y BUTTON. Pressing just the R BUTTON
will send the GAM forward. Pressing R + UP makes the GAM shoot downward.
Pressing R + DOWN makes the GAM shoot upwards. R + LEFT makes the GAM shoot
infront of the ship and R + RIGHT makes the GAM shoot behind the ship
**note** (pressing R + any directions such as right-left or down-right will
shoot the GAM on an angle towards the enemy.
A BUTTON: the GAM spread is pretty self-explanitory however i'll explain it
anyway. When you press the A button, the blue spheres that surround your ship will
spread out towards the enemy causing a larger radius of damage but it will leave you
open to attack. I recommend using this method only if your surrounded by ships
that can be taken out with a single hit. Otherwise this baby is useless.
**note** When you press the Y BUTTON to activate the GAM, at the bottom of
the screen you'll see a meter that begins to deplete. This is the GAM energy
meter. Watch it carefully since once the meter hits zero, the GAM retreats and
your left naked..well not literally but the ship loses its main defence/offence.
=========================================================================
5. CHARACTERS
=========================================================================
Yes, you read that right, ACTIVISION actually put characters into this game.
Not that it matters considering you don't have an option of playing as either
one since they both pilot the ship. I just thought it would be interesting to
show something that most gamers who have played the game, probably missed.
KID RAY
AGE - 25
BLOOD TYPE - B
OCCUPATION - PILOT
AUTHORS NOTE - This is the guy who pilots our craptastic ship the HALBARD.
he looks like a young boy (hence the name) and from appearance, seems like
your sterotypical hero made by the graphical wonders of the 16 bit SNES
ANITA
AGE - 21
BLOOD TYPE - A
OCCUPATION - BIOLOGIST
AUTHORS NOTE - She kind of looks like KID RAY now that I think about.
**note** ANITA bares quite a resemblance to the character NINA from the
Breath Of Fire series
HALBARD
LENGTH - 15.2 m
WIDTH - 7.2 m
HEIGHT - 6.8 m
WEIGHT - 22.7
MAX SPEED - M7.H (does that mean mock 7?? I have no clue)
MAX POWER - 9210 KW
CREW - 2
ENGINE - WIVERN E-2B
ARMAMENT - G.A.M
PLASMA RIFLE
2 WAY MISSLE (you gotta acquire those suckers yourself)
AUTHORS NOTE - Just incase you havent noticed, this is the ship you fly in
the game, nothing special really and it resembles a tiny gun more than anything
**note** A "HALBERD" is a medievil weapon consisting of a blade placed on top of a
long pole. (thanks to Faididi's review of this game for that one)
=========================================================================
6. STORY
=========================================================================
Ok, so heres a summary of the exceptionally generic story of BIOMETAL
It's the year 6C232 (6th century and 232nd year..whatever that means)A huge
war that had began years and years before has divided the Milky Way and all
of its Natural Resources have been depleted. The Milky Way Galactic Council
is forced to send a fleet of starships to a nearby planet by the name of
UP457 in search of any resources that can replenish the ones lost during the
battle. However during this mission, the fleet is destroyed by a race of half
machine, half animal aliens refered to as "BIOMETAL" by the galactic council.
One of the councils super computers then calculates that the number of these
"BIOMETALS" is increasing rapidly and will have the Milky Way completely taken
over within 32 hours. Sooooooooo mister Kid Ray and Miss Anita and their fleet
WASP are assigned to eliminate the hostile threat on UP457.
=========================================================================
7. WEAPONS/ITEMS
=========================================================================
LITTLE SHIPS - These are the little red and white ships that you see floating around.
Each ship, if shot, releases a weapon upgrade item that rotates between 3 different
kinds of weapons. The different kinds of weapons are marked with the letters V, L,
and W. Some of the ships also release missle upgrades when shot. The letters that
represent which kind of missle system you will recieve are, S, B and H
PRIMARY WEAPONS:
THE V SPREAD - (V) This is the V SPREAD as I call it and is a weapon that
upgrades your regular one shot plasma gun into a 3 way shot killing machine.
Now if you have this 3 way shot and happen to come across another item ship
and you collect another V SPREAD ITEM, then your primary weapon will be again
upgraded to a whopping 5 way shot.
ADVANTAGES: Since this is a spread weapon it can hit multiple targets instead of
just one
DISADVATAGES: The plasma gun, even when upgraded to a 5 way shot, is still extremely
week compared to the other weapons
RECOMMENDATIONS: This weapon is great for destroying the small ships that come in
packs and only require one shot to kill. However this gun is terrible for the much
larger ships and especially the bosses. Use it only on crowded levels such as stage 3
THE LASER - (L) This weapon fires a single laser in a straight line towards any
on coming BIOMETALS. When you have the laser equipped and then acquire another laser
upgrade, the laser will double its size and become a little more powerful
ADVANTAGES: This puppy is really really powerful
DISADVATAGES: This puppy is so slow and it can only hit one enemy at a time, not very
good if you ask me
RECOMMENDATIONS: STAY AWAY FROM THIS ITEM! I cant emphasize that enough. This is the worst
weapon in the game and should only be used if your planning on writing a FAQ about it. The laser
is sooooooooooo slow and its upgrade doesn't even make the beam THAT much bigger.
THE WAVE SHOT - (W) This weapon upgrade fires a series of wave like orange beams that hit oncoming
enemies. If you happen to receive the same upgrade twice, then the wave beams will shoot out of the
back of the ship as well as the front
ADVATAGES: Now this is what I call a weapon. It's moderately powerful but has an incredible
firing rate which makes it quicker than any other weapon in the game. Also the second upgrade
is especially helpful in the later levels when enemies start attacking from the front and
behind.
DISADVATAGES: Well there arent really any disadvantages that should cause you to avoid this
item. The only one I can think of is that it only hits one enemy at a time which means killing
multiple enemies at once is a chore.
RECOMMENDATIONS: This should be the weapon to get. Having this item completely upgraded will
make this game very easy
MISSLES:
STRAIGHT MISSLES - (S) As the name implies, these missles shoot straight at the enemy
directly infront of the ship.
ADVATAGES: If the enemy is infront of you, these missles WILL hit it
DISADVATAGES: Only hits enemy when its directly infront of the ship, otherwise they'll be hitting
nothing but thin air
RECOMMENDATIONS: These are the second best missles in the game. There powerful and effective, but
only in a straight line
ANGLE MISSLES - (B) When shot, the first missle shoots up in an arch towards the top of the screen
while the second missle travels down in an arch towards the bottom of the screen
ADVATAGES: Hits anything thats trying to speed on by you above or below your ship
DISADVANTAGES: This entire missle system is pretty much a disadvantage. If it does catch
a ship speeding above or below you, only one missle will hit it before the ship becomes
unreachable. Plus, since most of the ships in the game (or atleast the really powerful ones)
stay infront of your ship, that means those ANGLE MISSLES will never even hit them once!
RECOMMENDATIONS: Avoid this missle upgrade at all costs, they will rarely hit anything of
importance and will almost never hit bosses unless your up close with them
HOMING MISSLES - (H) When shot, two homing missles are released which track down any
enemy ship until contact is made.
ADVANTAGES: It WILL find the ship its homing in onto unless the ship leaves the screen.
These are especially good for bosses who move around a lot because it allows you to stay
at the back of the screen while avoiding the bosses shots, letting the missles do all
the work
DISADVANTAGES: There are none. The missles do the same amount of damage as all the other
missle upgrades.
RECOMMENDATION: You must use this missle upgrade because it is simply the best. The homing
missles hit whatever they are homed in onto no matter how fast the enemy is, while managing to
cause decent amounts of damage.
=========================================================================
8. WALKTHROUGH
=========================================================================
STAGE ONE: This level is pretty simple and lets you get used to the controls and
play mechanics of the game. You start off heading towards the alien planet (it
appears as though your flying through storm clouds) you should immediately start by blasting
the 2 little ships that appear before any enemies attack in order to get weapon
upgrades. Its a good idea to pick up the (w) item and the (h) item from these
2 ships since they are the most effective upgrades in the game. Soon a group of
"one hit kill" enemies arrive. You can easily destroy these suckers with the (w) item
combined with the homing missles. Finally after this, you get your taste of the larger
enemies. The toughest ships on this level are the ships that have a tentacle
attached to them and try and swipe at you while shooting bursts of plasma around.
Use your homing missles combined with the wave shot and the GAM to easily dispatch
these guys. The other enemies you should have no problems with especially the
really long ships as they can be destroyed with 2 regular shots from the primary
gun and a couple of missle hits. Remember to pick up the second upgrade to the WAVE
SHOT that appears in a little red and white ship half way through the level. This
ofcourse allows you to shoot wave shots from the front and the back of your
ship. Also note that when too much enemy fire is on screen and your having trouble
dodging the "bullets" charge up your GAM and form a shield around your ship. Since
your ship will be invincible to the enemy fire, you'll survive the onslaught. After you
destroy a heck of a lot of ships, the music will fade a bit and you'll get a warning
that a boss is approaching. Time to fight the first boss in BIOMETAL ladies and gentleman
***BOSS*** HEAD SHIP
DIFFICULTY: EASY
SIGNITURE WEAPON: ENERGY BLAST (green)
RECOMMENDED WEAPONS: WAVE SHOT, HOMING MISSLES, GAM
Ok, this guy really isn't that tough especially if your carrying the
weapons mentioned above. When the battle starts off head to the top
of the screen while blasting away at the front of the ship. Eventually
the boss will start shooting a bunch of plasma shots that seem to go in
random directions. When this happens you can either A) try to maneuver in
and out of each blast or B) charge your GAM and use it as a shield to
protect you. I'd go with option B on this one. Now that you have
your GAM all set and ready to go, fire it at the ship when ever you
see an opening. Also note that when your at the top of the screen the
ship will slowly position itself at the top of the screen with you so it
can line up its energy blast with your ship. By now the boss will already be
heavily damaged by your first attacks so he begins to use his most powerful
weapon, the energy blast. When you see a very thin green line shoot out of the
ships "mouth" area, immediately go to either the top of the screen (if hes at the bottom)
or the bottom of the screen (if hes at the top) The harmless thin green line will
eventually turn into a massive energy blast that takes up a quarter the
screen. While he is using his ultimate weapon, go underneath or above him
(depending on his position) and use your GAM to strike him. A few of these
hits and 2 energy blasts later, and you've completed the first boss in
BIOMETAL. Now on to stage 2
STAGE TWO: This level is set on the planet UP457 and is much more difficult
than the first level. At the very start of this level are two little ships that
give you weapon upgrades, HOWEVER DO NOT GO GET THEM YET! If you do you'll get hit
by one of the many ships that apppear. Ships begin to storm in from the front and
the side of your ship. All of them can be killed with one or two blasts. Now while
the screen moves forward, position yourself in line with the item upgrades to get
them while firing at the enemies. A long snake like enemy will then appear on screen.
This is your cue to get infront of him and blast away at his head. About 7 or 8 shots should do the
trick. Then focus your attention back on the smaller enemies. Those snake like enemies
will now begin to appear all over the level. Also note that the spread weapon is the
most effective upgrade for this level. You'll also notice that the smaller enemies
will constantly be circling you. Stay inside the open area and shoot them as they
circle you...simple enough. Another snake then appears, this one being much longer
and harder to kill. As it comes close to you from behind, turn on your GAM and make it
so that the blue spheres are touching its head as you both move forward. Once hes dead
a new ship we haven't seen before will arrive. This guy is actually tough. Turn your
GAM on and fire away at him. The quicker hes down, the less lives you'll lose. These
guys shoot homing missles and orange spread plasma shots at you, avoid them and
return fire when appropriate. After that encounter you'll be attacked by a bunch
of flying alien men (as best as I can describe them) who shoot a single shot
at you. They take a little while to kill but their shots are easy to avoid. Again,
just use the GAM on them. You'll also come across mines in this area and two more
little ships that supply the player with weapon upgrades when shot. Get the spread
upgrade for your ship and the homing missles. (you get a 3000 point bonus if you
already have a set of homing missles, woooo!) After a few more enemies you reach the
second boss..
***BOSS*** TENTACLE SHIP
DIFFICULTY: EASY
SIGNITURE WEAPON: FLAMETHROWER (green)
RECOMMENDED WEAPONS: V SPREAD SHOT, HOMING MISSLES, GAM
When the boss first enters the screen hes invincible so don't
bother wasting your GAM energy trying to hit him like I did. Instead,
wait until his entire ship is within view, then start using the GAM as
an offensive weapon more than a defensive weapon. This guy shoots orange
plasma shots straight at you, so wherever you are, your going to have
to deal with plasma shots since they shoot directly at you and never
in random directions. His two tentacles are nothing to worry about as
they aren't very long and his signiture attack is only powerful if your
in the center of the screen. Stay at the very back of the screen and
keep on moving up and down while avoiding his plasma fire and returning
fire with your GAM. The trick is to always stay either above or below his
tentacles therefore the green flames will never hit you,
striking the back middle of the screen instead. Also remember
to use your GAM as a shield whenever you feel like you cant avoid the
boss's plasma shots. After about a minute of this strategy, the boss will
be toast and you can pat yourself on the back for beating an extremely
easy boss.
STAGE THREE: Plain and simple, this level is tough and specific strategies
are required for each and every new enemy that you face. This stage demands
a lot of maneuverability on the gamers part because of the levels lack of space
for your ship to move around in. One of the best tips I can give you for a level like
this is to always focus your eyes on the enemy fire and never your ship. Know where
the enemys shots are headed and always remember where your ship is. In this level things
can get really crowded. Ok, now on to the strategy. The level starts off with two weapon
upgrades just ahead of your ship, and again do not attempt to get them until all of the
enemy ships surrounding them have been eliminated. Otherwise you'll just run into an enemy
before you have a chance to even get the weapon upgrade. After this, a group of
flamethrowing enemies will try and attack your ship. Since these ships are hard to kill
and since their in groups, i recommend focusing your concentration on avoiding them rather
than killing them. Also note that the GAM cannot protect your ship from the flame
blasts that these ships produce. Now during this attack, another pack of enemies will
try and end your mission. These new enemies are small animal type creatures that hop
up and down off of the terrain in an attempt to damage your ship. There easy to kill,
but hard to hit. Try to kill all of them before they get to close to your ship and do
not even bother trying to avoid them. There too fast and come in such a large quantity
that they take up almost half the screen. Once all of the hoping creatures have left
the screen a sort of mini boss will appear. This mini boss shoots orange plasma blasts
in large quantities that can be very hard to avoid. Stay at the front of the ship since
the plasma fire is shot from the sides. Turn your GAM on only as a shield when you know
for certain a plasma blast will hit you. Once its safe, turn off the GAM and let it recharge
until you need it again. Chances are you won't end up killing this mini boss since it can
withstand a large amount of damage. However if you do manage to kill it you'll get quite
a large sum added to your total score. Once this battle is finished, you'll encounter more
of the hoping creatures and a few non-threatening enemies that can be disposed of with
ease. Once the flamethrowing enemies appear again you know your close to the boss.
As mentioned earlier, avoid these ships rather than trying to kill them. Hopefully you
have a few lives left for the tough boss ahead.
***BOSS*** BIOPLANT
DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM - HARD
SIGNITURE WEAPON: TOXIC CLOUD
RECOMMENDED WEAPONS: V SPREAD SHOT, HOMING MISSLES, GAM
The only reason this boss is tough is because there really isn't any space to
maneuver in, the boss takes up most of the screen. Now all this boss is, is a plant with three
vines that extend out towards your ship, firing various projectiles at you. It's best to
have the V SPREAD SHOT here which will cover a lot of ground when fired. What
you have to do is destroy the blue/red tips located on each vine. These blue/red tips open up,
firing regular plasma blasts at the ship. Use the GAM to avoid these plasma shots, then return
fire at the vines. The plant also shoots out a toxic cloud that remains on the battle field until your
ship is hit but poses no real threat because they usually stay low to the ground and since your
hopefully near the top of the screen, you won't get hit. You should be able to win this battle
easily with patience. Just do your best to try and maneuver in the tight space of the battle
field while returning fire and switching your GAM on to shield you from the plasma blasts.
Now on to stage four.
***Final Stages are on there way***

9. CREDITS/SPECIAL THANKS
=======================================================================
I'd like to thank my family first and for most for putting up with my
nerdy videogame habits and my mom especially for buying me handfulls of
games when I didn't have a job. I'd also like to thank Activision for
making this terrible game, I don't know what I would have done without
it. A special thanks goes to gamefaqs.com for putting up this FAQ and
having one of the best videogame websites on the net.
