While I do write all of my guides for free, it does take a lot of time and
effort to put them together. If you're feeling generous and want to show your
appreciation, I am gladly accepting donations. I don't know exactly what the
donations will be used for, but just know that you would definitely be helping
me make more quality FAQs! Even the smallest donation amounts are appreciated,
and are a great way to say how much you appreciate the work I do. If you do
decide you'd like to donate, please send the donations through PayPal at the
e-mail address listed below. Thank you so very much for considering this!!
[email protected]
By the way, this is also my contact e-mail, so if you want to contribute
something to this or any of my other FAQs, or have a question to ask about one
of them, go ahead and use this e-mail.

Welcome to another FAQ of mine. This one covers the SMS game World Tournament
Golf. This game is another one made by Sega for their Master System in 1993 to
emulate the sport of golf.
..
That's all I have to say on this game. Enjoy.

Controls
--------
- D-Pad : Move cursors; move marker
- 1 Button: Cancel some choices; go back to the previous screen/step
- 2 Button: Confirm choices; continue to next screen/step
-----------
Starting Up
-----------
Options:
````````
When you begin, you can opt to immediately start the game, or to go to the
options menu. There, you can configure a number of things.
First is player number, which can end up choosing the modes you can play in:
- 1 Player : Medal, Championship
- 2 Players: Medal, Championship, Match Play
- 3 Players: Medal, Championship, Skins
- 4 Players: Medal, Championship, Skins, Foursome, Fourball
Then there is the course (Country Club or Links Golf Club), and, finally, the
number of holes in a Championship (18, 36, 54, or 72, equal to 1, 2, 3, and 4
full games of golf, respectively).
Start Game:
```````````
Here, you can edit your player. First, if you like the player as-is, just say
you're "Done". If not, select the player to edit.
You can edit their name; press the 2 Button at the proper points on keypad at
the bottom of the screen to select it, then the red circle at the end to end.
You can also select types of tees. I'm not entirely sure on how tees work, but,
from observation, I guess it makes it easier for balls to get spin - front tees
for topspin, back tees for backspin, and middle tees for a balance.
Next, you get to edit the clubs to use. There is a table describing yardage in
the following subsection. As for number, you can only have twelve. It's usually
best to go with the balanced default: One Wood/Driver (1W), Three Wood (3W),
Five Wood (5W), One Iron (1I), Three Iron (3I), Four Iron (4I), Five Iron (5I),
Six Iron (6I), Seven Iron (7I), Eight Iron (8I), Putting Wedge (PW),
Sand/Bunker Wedge (SW), and the Putter (PT).
The final thing to edit is your skill level - novice, amateur, or pro.
--------------------
Generalized Gameplay
--------------------
As you prepare to play the game, you will choose a mode, as above; the number
of players as applicable; a set of initials to identify each player; then the
game begins.
Firstly, we'll cover golf club stats. These are only readily taken from
prior observation of the clubs in action and are very approximate.
O---------------------------O---------------------O-----------------------O
| Golf Club Names | Approximate Range | Approximate Minimum |
| | on Grass Turf | Distance on Grass |
O---------------------------O---------------------O-----------------------O
| 1W (One Wood or Driver) | 278 yards | 170 yards |
| 2W (Two Wood) | 244 yards | 140 yards |
| 3W (Three Wood) | 222 yards | 140 yards |
| 4W (Four Wood) | 200 yards | 130 yards |

| PW (Pitching Wedge) | 112 yards | 15 yards |
| SW (Sand/Bunker Wedge) | 101 yards | 15 yards |
| PT (Putter) | 20 yards | 1 yard |

When you begin a hole, you will obtain various information on the hole. This
will include wind speed and direction, par (base level of shots), distance to
the hole in yards (1 yard is a little under 1 meter), shot number, and such.
Press the 1 Button for an overview of the golf course.
Press Up/Down on the D-Pad to choose one of your clubs, and use Left/Right to
rotate your targeting "+" on the screen. This chooses your straight-line
trajectory; that is, the direction your shot will go in prior to wind and such
taking effect.
Press "2" and you'll confirm this. Now the power and snap meters will appear.
You'll end up now being able to choose your power level by holding, then
releasing "2". Note that the power meter is divided into 19 segments - 16 for
the controlled 100%-or-less power, and the three above 100% where control is
less than optimal.
To find the number of segments you need to fill for a given club, divide the
club's yardage as above by 16, then divide the distance to the hole into that.
(Example: 1W at 256 yards -> 278/16 = 17.375 -> 256/17.375 = ~14.73 segments.)
After releasing "2" to set the power meter, the snap meter will fill from left
to right. This affects your hook and slice shots. You will press 2 Button to
stop it. Ideally, for a straight shot, you need it at the arrow markers. If you
don't fill it enough, the ball goes to the right; too much, and the ball goes
to the left.
After this, the ball will be shot.
This cycle will repeat for a bit until you reach the green near the hole.
It gets a bit more specialized there ... slightly. It is just you being
limited to the putter, and that's the only thing worth noting on putting in
this game.
There are usually eighteen holes played throughout the course of a
match, and in a way similar to this.
---------------
Scoring Details
---------------
Each given hole will have a set "par" on it. The par is the number of shots it
ideally takes to finish a hole. If you go under this, you earn points (your
score is negative, but that's good), and if you go over, you lose points (you
gain positive points). Hitting exactly par neither hurts or helps you.
The number of shots you take can also be affected by two other things - water
hazards and out-of-bounds area. Both are considered out-of-bounds. This bad
shot will count against you, and you'll be penalized an additional shot. For
example, if you hit the water on your first shot, consider the next shot you
take your third and not the second.
At the end of the hole, the number of shots you take, minus the par, is your
score. If such is positive, you went over (bogey); if negative, you did good by
going under (birdie, eagle, albatross). And, of course, par is neither good or
bad.
In Match Play, your record is based on the number of "wins" per hole. If you
have the best score of the participants, that is one win and there's nothing
else to it. This can mean that someone did three shots better than you, but you
still won more holes overall and are still the winner. Usually, otherwise, it
is based upon your number of strokes as a whole, disregarding individual wins
on a hole.
To the curious, the relatively official names for various shots:
O----------------O-----------------O
| Name of Shot | Score Changes |
O----------------O-----------------O
| Hole-in-One | (Par) - 1 |
| Albatross | -3 |
| Eagle | -2 |
| Birdie | -1 |
| Par | ±0 |
| Bogey | +1 |
| Double Bogey | +2 |
| Triple Bogey | +3 |
