---------------------------------------
A1. Overview
---------------------------------------
SpellCaster is a very underrated action/adventure/RPG released for the Sega
Master System in 1989. It is still one of my favourite games of all time.
Simple, fun game play with a nice variety of environments, rather excellent
graphics and music, and a decent story. For those reasons, I wanted to create
my first FAQ, to cover every bit of info for this game.
The game consists of action screens, where you attack with either your 'Ki'
force (basically balls of energy from your hands) or with a variety of spells.
Then there are 'point and click' adventure screens, giving you the standard
options of MOVE, TALK, LOOK, etc. The RPG elements come into play when you
pick up orange balls from dead enemies to increase your Energy points and
increase your Strength (health points) by finding new weapons and simply
advancing in the game.
---------------------------------------
A2. Instructions
---------------------------------------
Much of the following, including item, weapon, armor and spell descriptions,
are taken directly from the original user manual. Along with my own comments.
--- INTRODUCTION ---
'Once upon a time your name was Kane Tensen. Your parents were simple farmers
in the rolling hills of old Japan. But you had ambitions. You wanted to become
a great and noble warrior. So on your thirteenth birthday, your parents let you
join Summit Temple, where the ancient arts of battle were taught. When you
joined, you gave up your last name and became simply known as Kane.
Years passed...and you learned powers greater than you had ever dreamed. The
ability to call down the strengths of the gods! To fly, cast lightning bolts
and balls of fire! You became a mystic warrior, protecting the innocent,
searching for higher truths and building the strengths that would make you the
most powerful kind of warrior, a SpellCaster. Your life was peaceful...until
the attacks began.
The first temples destroyed were the small ones high in the mountains. The
villagers in the little mountain towns said that the temples had been attacked
by an unnamed, evil army of humans and nightmarish creatures who struck like
lightning and then disappeared.
Daikak, the wise leader of Summit Temple, sent groups of warriors out to guard
the temples. They never returned. Still, he was able to learn a little about
the true nature of the problem. Monumental events were taking place that would
change the fate of the World! Gods and demons were being summoned from the
Otherworld. Powerful, ancient relics of power and magic were being unearthed.
Clans gathered on all parts of the country.
And you, the mystic warrior known only as Kane, were to be the most important
player in the life-and-death drama that was about to begin.
Daikak summoned you and sent you to check on a group of warriors guarding a
temple. As you left, you felt grim certainty that the coming events would not
be pleasant. Whatever the future held would forge you as certain as fire forges
a strong sword.
It was time to face your destiny. Go now, and face your true calling as
SpellCaster!'
--- TAKING CONTROL ---
Directional Button (D-Button): Moves Selection cursor.
Moves Kane LEFT, RIGHT or CROUCH.
In air, moves Kane LEFT, RIGHT, UP, DOWN.
To go UP stairs.
Button 1: Shoot "Ki" force. (Hold button down to build up energy to 3x power)
Cancel menu command.
Use magic.
Button 2: Confirm menu command.
Jump.
--- GETTING STARTED ---
With the title screen showing, press Button 1 or Button 2. Pressing Button 1 or
2 again will put you into a selection screen for beginning a game. Select an
option with the D-Button and press Button 2 to confirm.
NEW GAME: Starts from the beginning of the game. Use this option if you
have not received a Password in the course of the game.
PASSWORD: As you play SpellCaster, you will in the course of play receive
multiple digit passwords. Selecting this option and pressing Button
2 will allow you to enter your password to place you back in the
game at the point where you received your password, with all your
possessions and powers intact.
--- OBJECT ---
The object of SpellCaster is simple: read the last message of the game. If you
get that far, everything is explained.
(That was taken from the user manual, really!)
--- GAME OVER ---
When Kane's strength is gone, he will fall to the ground and the game will end.
At this point, you will receive the option to:
BREAK: End the game completely and start over from the beginning or from
a password.
CONTINUE: Begin at the start of the scene in which you died.
NOTE: If you receive a password, die and then select CONTINUE,
that password will be invalidated and unusable.
(That's what the manual says, but it is not true.)
--- ACTION & ADVENTURE SCREENS ---
SpellCaster takes place in two game formats: action and adventure scenes. In
action scenes you'll do battle with the multitude of creatures who stand in
your way.
STGH (Strength): You begin the game with a strength of 20. When Kane is hit,
the number decreases. When it reaches zero, Kane will fall
and the game is over. Strength can be restored by capturing
blue balls some enemies leave behind when they are defeated.
Each new weapon you acquire will add ten points to your STGH.
ENGY (Energy): Energy is power for using spells. When the energy is at zero,
no spells can be used. Different spells use different amounts
of energy...the more powerful the spell, the more energy is
used. Energy can be regained by capturing the orange balls some
enemies leave behind.
Adventure scenes will call on your powers of intellect and strategy as you
listen to conversations, use items and conjure up spells. It is in the
adventure scenes that the story of the game unfolds! Listen to the characters
who appear in the View Window and search their stories for clues. You can also
see and obtain items in the mode by using the commands in the Command Window.
-----------------------
| | |
| View | Command |
| | |
|-----------|---------|
| | |
| Talk | Kane |
| | |
-----------------------
View Window: Shows the present location.
Command Window: Shows the command menu.
Talk Window: Shows the words the character is saying. Press Button to
advance the messages.
Kane Window: Shows Kane's expression as he speaks.
--- COMMANDS ---
Commands are used by selecting them with the D-Button, then pressing Button 2
to confirm. Cancel selections by pressing Button 1.
MOVE: A command used to enter and leave buildings, towns, etc. Select your
choice with the cursor and press Button 2 to move.
TALK: Allows you to converse with the characters you meet. When specific
subjects are discussed, select them with the cursor and press Button 2.
LOOK: Allows you to examine your surroundings.
TERRAIN: Gives you an overview of what you are looking at.
AT WHAT?: Allows you to examine a specific object. Point to it with the
finger using the D-Button and press Button 2.
TAKE: Allows you to TAKE an item shown in the View Window. Be sure to LOOK at
it first so that the object is identified by name. Then you can add it
to your possessions.
USE: Lets you use an item you possess.
SPELL: Allows you to use magic. There are nine spells that can be used in the
Adventure scenes.
--- STATUS SCREEN ---
If you press the PAUSE button on the Sega Power Base during the Action scenes,
you will automatically access the Status screen.
ATTK (ATTACK): Shows the weapons that increase Kane's attack strength.
DFNS (DEFENSE): Shows the armor that increases Kane's defense strength.
SPELL: The list of spells that can be used in the Action scenes. To use a
spell, select it with the D-Button and press Button 2. You will return
to the Action scene. To use the spell, press Button 1, then push the
D-Button DOWN. If you are touched by an enemy while using a spell, the
spell will be broken and you will have to use the D-Button and Button 1
again to revive the spell. To cancel a spell or use no spell at all,
select ---- and press Button 2.
--- PASSWORDS ---
You receive passwords in Adventure scenes by using the spell PASSWORD. The God
Kangiten will give you a 24 letter code. Write it down CAREFULLY! Then, if you
die and select BREAK when asked, you can use the password to get back into the
game at the same screen in which you received it, with all your Strength,
Energy and possessions.
The password is made of 24 letters and numbers. If you enter them correctly,
the game will restart. But if you enter even one letter incorrectly, you will
get the message "WRONG!" and will have to discover which letter has been
entered incorrectly.
Enter the password by selecting the upper and lower case letters and numbers
with the D-Button and pressing Button 2. To correct password entries, select
the LEFT or RIGHT arrows with the cursor, press Button 1, hold and move the
cursor to the letter or number you wish to change. When your corrections have
been made, move the cursor to "ED" and press Button 2.
If you wish to stop during the entering of a password and return to the Title
screen, press Buttons 1 and 2 simultaneously.
---------------------------------------
A3. Items
---------------------------------------
In addition to the weapons and armor you may find, there are a number of
special items that you must find to complete the game.
SWORD OF (SEVEN) BRANCHES: A powerful sword with the ability to wake the Gods.
You need to use this sword near the end of the game
to wake the Serpent God.
LOCATION: Kashima Temple
X-RAY GLASSES: Allows you to see some things more clearly, especially
underwater. This is the one item you do not really need to get.
It is only used on the ocean to see treasure beneath the water,
instead of just jumping in.
LOCATION: Shimono Boat House
LUTE: Once belonged to a humble monk. Find it, and its powers will surprise
you. You need the Lute to destroy the Evil Spirits in the Ocean and to
calm stormy waters.
LOCATION: Shimono Sea
SWORD OF KUSANAGI: A magical sword taken from one of the eight tails of the
Serpent God. This is used on a few occasions to prove your
identity and your power. Most importantly used near the end
of the game to direct the Serpent God's power onto yourself.
LOCATION: UnderWater Shrine
HARP OF AMANO: (MYSTIC HARP). Sweet music from a land down under! (No, not
Australia). The Harp is used to put guard dogs to sleep. You
only use this once, but you need to learn to play it first.
LOCATION: Toki Plains in the UnderWorld
SACRED MIRROR: An object of great power. Only used near the end of the game to
absorb the Serpent God's power.
LOCATION: Holy Bridge in the Underworld
The following items are not in the user manual, but you use them at some point.
CHARM: A charm from the Iwato family.
LOCATION: Izumo Shrine
FAKE SWORD: A fake version of the Sword of Kusanagi, but has a unique ability
to show a person's true identity.
LOCATION: Attaro Shrine
BEADS: Used to calm whirlpools in the ocean.
LOCATION: Inside the Lute
BALL OF SHIMAZU: Needed to open the entrance to the Battleship Ameno.
LOCATION: Shimazu gives you this at Izumo
ARMOR BRACERS: Used to start the Battleship Ameno. A boss drops this for you.
LOCATION: Mt. Hinokami
PYRAMID POINT: Needs to go on top of the Pyramid to open the other entrance.
LOCATION: Inside Pyramid
NECTAR: Sweet nectar from the UnderWorld. Used to wake up the Ferrymen. You
can also use it to heal yourself.
LOCATION: Chizu Sea
OAR: The Ferryman's Oar. You need this to get the Harp from under a rock.
LOCATION: The Ferryman in the Underworld
SWORD OF FURY: The last of eight swords needed to receive the Sacred Mirror.
LOCATION: The Thunder God in the Underworld
NECKLACE: Has the power to revive you once if you die. Be sure to look around
Kuma's neck to find this.
LOCATION: Kuma at Izumo, before the final battle.
---------------------------------------
A4. Weapons
---------------------------------------
In the course of the game you will find weapons that increase Kane's attack
strength. While you don't see these weapons being used, their power is shown by
the increase in effect of Kane's 'Ki' force attacks. The weapons can be viewed
in the Status screen. Each weapon increases your strength points by ten.
Dokko: A handheld steel spike with two sharp points used by gripping in the
center. The basic weapon and first one studied at Summit Temple.
LOCATION: Given to you by Daikok after the first scene.
Vajira: The steel claw. It is held like the Dokko, but is more powerful and
causes more damage to the enemy.
LOCATION: Shimono Sea
Trident: An ancient, powerful weapon from China. It has been forged from
enchanted metal to fight evil.
LOCATION: Pyramid
War Hammer: A mystical weapon with great powers! It is said that it was forged
by the Gods and will greatly increase the strength of any man who
owns it. It also allows you to break blocks in the Pyramid.
LOCATION: Pyramid
---------------------------------------
A5. Armor
---------------------------------------
Armor increases your defensive strength; that is, enemy attacks will cause you
less damage. You cannot select different armor, nor can you buy/sell armor, it
just automatically becomes part of your inventory, since there is only one of
each type.
Bracers: Armor for the forearms. Increases defense strength to the first order.
LOCATION: Shimono Sea
Helmet: Made of the hardest alloy, the helmet increases defense strength to
the second order.
LOCATION: Shimono Sea
Body Armor: Covers the chest area. It was made for a famous general.
Increases your defense a little more.
LOCATION: Pyramid
Leg Armor: The final factor in Kane's defense strength.
LOCATION: Pyramid
---------------------------------------
A6. Spells
---------------------------------------
Along with his martial arts training at Summit Temple, Kane learned the art of
magic. Used carefully and when Kane has enough energy, magic can defeat almost
all of your enemies.
To use spells in the Action screens, press the PAUSE button to access the
Status screen. Select the desired spell with the D-button and press Button 2.
You will return to the Action scene. To use the spell, press Button 1, then
push the D-Button DOWN. If you are touched by an enemy while using a spell, the
spell will be broken and you will have to use the D-Button and Button 1 again
to revive the spell. To cancel a spell or use no spell at all, select ---- and
press Button 2.
All spells are available in the beginning of the game, except 'Password',
which is given to you at the end of the first action scene.
PASSWORD: As the name implies, using this spell will allow the Wise Kangiten
to give you a password.
You can only get a password in the Adventure screens.
ENERGY: 0
HAKUJI: A spell to focus your "Ki" energy into a beam of destructive light.
A good alternative to your regular shots if you need some quick extra
power.
ENERGY: 3
INDRA: Calls on the Thunder God to storm lightning on your enemies. Honestly,
this spell is not very useful.
ENERGY: 10
FUDO: Calls forth a great ball of fire. About as useful as Hakuji, good to add
a lot more power to your regular type of shots, but only if you have the
energy to spare. It is very useful in the final battle however.
ENERGY: 20
KANNON: A kinder spell that returns the waking dead to the underworld. But it
is not effective against all evil spirits. Actually, this spell is
useful against almost every enemy and boss. A very effective way to
destroy enemies without getting hurt. It's cheap to use too.
ENERGY: 5
HATTEN: Calls on the God of Winds to send a tornado or high winds against your
enemies. This spell is useful in many situations and many bosses,
since it covers almost the entire screen. Although KANNON is usually
more effective.
ENERGY: 10
MARS: Calls on the God of War to fully restore your strength.
ENERGY: 25
MAKIRI: Gives you the power to fly! You will need to use this often.
Lasts for 30 seconds.
ENERGY: 20
NOBOTA: A spell that creates a shield impervious to all the enemy's missile
attacks. This spell also allows you to destroy enemies that normally
spawn into smaller enemies, with one shot. The spell will deactivate
when you enter a building or access the status screen. Otherwise it
will last infinitely on the current action screen.
ENERGY: 30
---------------------------------------
A7. Extra Info
---------------------------------------
- The little blue balls refill 10 strength points and the orange balls refill
10 energy points.
- Every 10 enemies you destroy will drop a ball. It's usually a 50/50 chance
for blue or orange, even if your points are full.
- You have the ability to collect up to 999 energy points since the beginning
of the game.
- You can return to Kuma at Izumo almost anytime throughout most of the game
to refill your strength.
- You can return to Chizu Sea anytime you are in the UnderWorld to refill your
strength.
- You don't really need to worry about dying in this game, you can continue at
the last action screen you were at. If you were fighting a boss when you
died, you will continue in that battle with full strength! (But energy
points are not refilled.)
- Almost all bosses leave behind a big blue or orange ball for you to refill
your strength/energy, but you have to get it quick before the screen
automatically fades out.
- The big blue balls in the pyramid will always be there again when you move
off the screen then go back.
- The KANNON spell can get you past almost any enemy situation, except
humanoid enemies.
- If you take too long fighting the Thunder God, it will disappear and you
will not get the Sword of Fury. Do NOT save the game, you will have to reset
the game to continue.

B. WALKTHROUGH
______________________________________________________________________________
---------------------------------------
B1. Mt. Enriku
---------------------------------------
You start at Summit Temple talking to Daikak. He tells you that Enriku Temple
was attacked. Guards from Tokak Village were sent to investigate, but they
disappeared. So now you need to go investigate. Once you are done talking,
'MOVE' to Mt.Enriku.
Nothing too tough here. The little twirly orange guys fly at you faster as they
get closer. If you get hit on the bridge, you'll fall in the water, hit the
jump button quickly, or you'll die.
On the next screen, just remember to duck under the arrows. Walk to the end of
the next screen to enter Enriku Temple.
In the temple, you discover that the Tokak villagers were all wiped out.
However, one is still alive, and says 'Izumo' before he dies. After this you
are automatically returned to Summit Temple. Once you tell Daikak about Izumo,
he'll tell you to go there, it is where the council resides. Before leaving,
Daikak gives you the Dokko weapon. MOVE to Izumo, and Daikak gives you the
PASSWORD spell.
---------------------------------------
B2. Izumo
---------------------------------------
At Izumo town you see a spaghetti stand. LOOK at the spaghetti stand and Kuma
appears. TALK to Kuma and he mentions 'strange goings-on at the shrine.' TALK
to him again to get the SHRINE keyword. MOVE to Izumo Shrine.
Watch out for the slimes that jump out of the water under the bridge, and those
plants that grow out of nowhere.
The only thing new on the next screen are those pesky flying fire monsters. Be
sure to dodge the flames they drop.
A few pits here on the next screen, you could fly over them with MAKIRI to be
safe, but not necessary. Watch out for the centipede things that fly up and
down across the screen. At the end of this screen is Izumo temple.
Inside the temple, you see marks on the floor and wall, like something was
ripped out. LOOK at the yellow square on the wall. Now MOVE outside. Someone is
there, TALK and you find out they are the ones who attacked Enriku. Now he's
going to attack you!
*** BOSS BATTLE: Mysterious Man
This boss shoots large white balls that are hard to dodge but do low damage.
Just avoid running into the boss himself and keep shooting. After the fight, he
says "Kusanagi", and disappears.
***
The mysterious man left something behind. TAKE the Charm, then MOVE to Izumo.
TALK to Kuma twice, then TAKE spaghetti to fully restore your strength. You can
return here at almost any point throughout the game to refill your strength.
Now MOVE to Summit Temple. TALK about Kusanagi, and Daikak mentions that
the Sword of Kusanagi is in the Attaro Shrine. MOVE to the Attaro Shrine.
---------------------------------------
B3. Attaro
---------------------------------------
Shoot the yellow cats when they jump, and watch out for those centipede things
again as they shoot up from beneath the ground. Go up the stairs.
Bunch of pits here. Again, it's not really necessary to use MAKIRI to fly over
them, but I would highly recommend it, especially with those flying fire
buggers. Hold the fire button down when you first start flying so you kill them
when they first appear. You should be able to get to the end on one spell. If
you fall, just hold the fire button and push down real quick to reactivate the
spell. At the end of this screen is Attaro Shrine.
Inside the shrine, LOOK at the sword, then TAKE it. Jukak appears and attacks.
*** BOSS BATTLE: Jukak
This guy drops little rodents that come and attack you, shoot them once and
they die. He also shoots three fireballs at you, duck to avoid them. As with
the previous boss, try not run into him, as it does more damage. Just keep
shooting and he'll soon give up.
***
After defeating Jukak, you discover that he guards the sword. The sword holds
the power of the Serpent God. However, this sword is a fake. If you TALK again
he says that he doesn't know where the real sword is, so just TAKE the Fake
Sword and MOVE to Summit Temple. USE the Charm, and Daikak mentions the Iwato
family. TALK about Iwato, and Daikak tells you that their hideout is in
Mt. Miwa. MOVE to Mt. Miwa.
---------------------------------------
B4. Mt. Miwa
---------------------------------------
You see a mysterious woman at Mt. Miwa. USE the Fake Sword, and it causes the
old woman to turn into the Mt. Miwa Guard.
*** BOSS BATTLE: Mt. Miwa Guard
He flies around the screen spinning and periodically shooting fireballs in all
eight directions. Dodge the fireballs and shoot him. As you damage him he gets
faster. Again, avoid running into him.
***
After defeating the Mt. Miwa Guard, MOVE inside to another action scene.
Nothing much to say here, just jump and watch out for the little twirly orange
dudes. Go up the hill and enter the next area
Watch out for the boulder at the end of the bridge. Wait for it to fall before
you jump, then you'll need to jump over another one right away. On the next
screen, the ground will collapse if you stand on it, between the 4th and 5th
hole, so be quick or be dead.
At the Miwa Temple, you meet Wakahiko of Iwato who's waiting to stop you.
*** BOSS BATTLE: Wakahiko
This boss starts the battle flying back and forth. He throws boomerangs, that
you can shoot to destroy. After shooting Wakahiko enough times, his shield
goes down, and he drops to the ground. Just a few more shots to defeat him.
***
Wakahiko mentions that his friends are calling forth the Serpent God. MOVE
outside, then MOVE to Summit Temple. Once there, TALK to Daikak and he says the
Iwato are after the Kashima Shrine. MOVE to Kashima Shrine.
---------------------------------------
B5. Kashima
---------------------------------------
Nothing special here, just the usual suspects and more of those plants that pop
out of the ground without warning. Up the stairs to the next area.
Use MAKIRI to fly over the pits, it's much easier. Just watch out again for
those fiery flying things. After the pits there's an archer dude shooting
arrows at you. At the end you'll reach Kashima Temple.
Inside the temple, you'll run into this guy that wants to awaken the Serpent
God or something. Basically, he wants to kill you.
*** BOSS BATTLE: Kashima Fire Boss
This is the first boss that can be tough. He'll fly straight down across the
screen, then come up again from the bottom, somewhere else. At the same time he
shoots 5 fireballs out, be sure to stay far away and dodge the fireballs. It's
best to use the HATTEN spell and shoot it whenever you get a chance, or use
KANNON if you're really lazy.
***
After you kill the boss, he'll leave behind a sword on the ground. LOOK at the
sword twice then TAKE the Sword of Seven Branches. MOVE to Summit Temple.
Daikak tells you that the Iwato are after the real Sword of Kusanagi in the
Underwater Shrine. MOVE to Shimono-Seki, but Daikak takes the Charm, and the
Sword of Seven Branches first.
---------------------------------------
B6. Shimono
---------------------------------------
At Shimono, LOOK at the pier(TERRAIN) twice, and a girl appears. LOOK at the
girl, she gets in the boat, and a whirlpool appears. CAST HATTEN to cause a
tornado to catch the girl, the boat is destroyed. CAST MAKIRI to fly out and
rescue her. She still doesn't look well, so CAST KANNON to rid her of the evil
spirits that possess her. TALK to her twice. TALK one more time, and she'll
introduce herself as Midori, and that her Grampa can answer your questions.
MOVE to Midori's house.
At Midori's house, Grampa mentions that there have been a lot of disasters at
sea, caused by evil spirits, but he lends you their boat. He wants you to
avenge his son's death. If you LOOK at Grampa's plate and then TAKE the food,
you can fully restore your strength. You'll have a choice of seaweed, fried egg
or sushi, it doesn't matter what you choose. When you are done, MOVE to the
pier.
Back at the pier, LOOK at the boathouse, then TALK to Midori. Now go inside the
boathouse, look around, then go back to Midori's house. TALK to Grampa and
he'll tell you about the X-Ray glasses inside the boathouse. Return to the
boathouse and TAKE the X-Ray glasses. It's not necessary to get these, in fact
I never use them. Now MOVE to the sea.
The sea is 5x5 square of adventure screens. You can MOVE front, back, left or
right. You can LOOK at your PRESENT LOCATION to see where you are. You can use
the X-Ray glasses to look underwater to see if there's treasure or something,
but it's just as easy to jump in the water and see for yourself. If a screen
has an evil spirit, you can't move forward. In fact you can't do anything
except move elsewhere, if you try anything else, the spirit will attack. You
need to use the Lute to destroy them. You don't really have to kill any
spirits, but you do if you want the treasure. You also need to use the Lute to
get by the strong waves. Follow the order below.

Lute
-----
When you jump in the water here, you'll see a monk floating around playing a
lute. He doesn't attack you, but if you wait too long, you'll lose strength.
CAST KANNON, to put the spirit to rest. Then the chest opens and you can get
the Lute.
Vajira
-------
USE the Lute on the spirits, then jump in the ocean.
Helmet
-------
USE the Lute on the spirits, then jump in the ocean.
Bracers
--------
If you jump in the ocean here, you encounter a giant fish. The fish will spit
out smaller fishes. You need to shoot it when its mouth is open, when you do it
charges at you. You can just stand in the corner and keep shooting, you'll get
hit a few times, but the fish will die quickly. The chest will then open and
you can take the Bracers.
Whirlpool
----------
Once you've got all the treasure, use the Lute to get by one of the screens
with the strong waves, then move into this screen with the whirlpool. USE the
Lute. When you do, the Lute will break open and you find Beads inside. USE the
Beads to stop the whirlpool. Now you can jump in the ocean to reach the
Underwater Shrine.
On the first screen, jump into the first hole, otherwise the screen will keep
repeating itself. Watch out for the crabs that fly down the screen. In the next
section, be sure to shoot those big fish as soon as possible, they drop egg
pouches that hatch and fish jump out at you. You can only cross the pits when
the water is thin. Jump down the hole at the end to enter the next section.
Avoid the fireballs that shoot out of the statues mouth. Some pirate-like bad
guys will appear and throw swords at you. At the end, you'll enter the
Underwater Shrine.
In the shrine, you'll find two blue-faced people. TALK to them, then CAST
KANNON to let their souls rest. LOOK at the sword, then TAKE the real Sword of
Kusanagi. When you do this the Fake Sword shatters. Return to the boat.
Back on the surface, you'll find yourself surrounded by the Iwato family.
They'll attack first, then you can USE the Sword of Kusanagi to defeat them
all. You'll then return to Summit Temple. Daikak will tell you that the Iwato
are trying to revive the Serpent God at Izumo. MOVE to Izumo, then MOVE to
Izumo Temple.
---------------------------------------
B7. Izumo, part 2
---------------------------------------
At Izumo temple, you'll meet Princess Asaka, who wants to avenge her family.
She turns into a dragon and attacks.
*** BOSS BATTLE: Princess Asaka
The dragon moves up and down from one side of the screen to the other. It will
periodically shoot a fireball that is fairly easy to dodge. The only time you
can hit the dragon is when it opens its mouth to shoot a fireball. Just keep
moving around and be patient, you could always use some magic like HATTEN or
KANNON to help.
***
After you defeat the dragon, Asaka apologizes and asks you to enter the shrine.
MOVE inside. Shimazu is there. After Shimazu is done talking, he and Asaka
disappear. Attempt to MOVE, and you hear Shimazu scream from outside. MOVE
outside, and you'll see that they are being attacked by a giant centipede.
*** BOSS BATTLE: Giant Centipede
This boss will fly from one side of the screen to the other, then come back
from the other side. It drops fireballs as it moves, but they are very easy to
dodge. You need to shoot the back of the centipede, whenever it flies low
enough. This boss is easy to defeat, it just takes awhile.
***
After the fight, TALK to Shimazu. He gives you a sphere. TAKE the Ball of
Shimazu. TALK again, and he tells you to go to Kumano and talk to Utsuho.
Shimazu dies, and Princess Asaka disappears. MOVE to Izumo and TALK to Kuma,
you can then MOVE to Kumano Temple.
At Kumano Shrine, LOOK AT TERRAIN. TALK, and Utsuho appears, and attacks you.
Use the Ball of Shimazu, and Utsuho agrees to help you. TALK to him again, and
he tells you to go to the Serpent God in Kakogen. MOVE to Kakogen
---------------------------------------
B8. Kakogen
---------------------------------------
At the first screen keep going to the right until you reach a well. Past the
well is just a dead end. Before you jump in the well, get the MAKIRI spell
ready. Now, stand on the well and push down. As soon as you start falling,
activate the MAKIRI spell and move to the right. Look out for the big green
thing that falls from the ceiling. It takes a few hits to kill. Also watch out
for the little walking dudes, they explode when you get close. At the stone
formation, stand on it in the middle and push down to enter the next area.
Lots of things to avoid here. Just take your time, and shoot whatever comes
your way, like the little flying dogs that shoot fire, they take a few hits to
kill. Be sure to shoot the little walking dudes before they explode. At the end
of this screen, you'll enter Kakogen Temple.
You see a cauldron in the temple. LOOK at the round depression in it. CAST
INDRA to remove the force field. Now USE the Ball of Shimazu, and the top
disappears. LOOK at the hole in the pot, then MOVE inside to find the
Battleship Ameno. You can't do anything here yet, so just leave. Make your way
back out of the well and return to Kumano Shrine. You can just jump from one
ledge to the other to get out of the well.
At Kumano Shrine again, you find Utsuho and Asaka. Asaka is badly hurt. TALK to
Utsuho then MOVE to Mt. Hinokami. Before going there, you may want to return to
the well in Kakogen, it is a good place to build your energy, all the way to
999! Of course, using an emulator, it's not really necessary, but you will be
using a lot of energy the rest of the game.
---------------------------------------
B9. Mt. Hinokami
---------------------------------------
This is probably the hardest part of the game, you will die often. About half
way through the first screen, you will need to use MAKIRI. The enemies with
4 balls can only be killed with a powered up shot. So hold the fire button
as you fly to build up power to kill them and the flying dragons. Stop at the
last pedestal here to let MAKIRI wear off, then cast it again. If you get hit
while flying, try to cast MAKIRI as fast as you can before you fall into the
fiery depths. You should be able to hold the MAKIRI spell until the end of the
level. It will take some trial and error to find the best place to position
yourself while flying.
When you reach the end, the demon Kezeus will appear and explain how they used
magic powers to control Daikok to lure you here, now prepare to die...did you
expect any different?.
*** BOSS BATTLE: Kezeus
Kezeus flies back and forth across the screen, stopping to shoot lightning
periodically. You need to hit it in the mouth when it's open, right before he
fires. Just stand on the edge of the screen, and duck if he flies over you.
***
Once you defeat Kezeus, Daikok will appear wearing special armor. He also seems
pretty keen on killing you.
*** BOSS BATTLE: Daikok
This can be a rather difficult battle. Laser beams are dropping on your head,
as well as Daikok firing beams from his eyes. You need to jump and hit Daikok
in the eye when it's open. The easiest thing to do is stand still and cast
HATTEN, if you time it right, you'll hit the open eye with every shot.
***
After the battle, you will see an armor bracer left behind. LOOK at it twice,
then TAKE the Armor Bracers. MOVE to Kumano and USE the Armor Bracers. Utsuho
will tell you to go the Ameno Spacecraft, so MOVE to Kakogen.
When you get back to the spacecraft, USE the Armor Bracers. The Ameno
Spacecraft will power up, and tell you the story of how the people sent the
evil demon away to another planet, and trapped it inside a pyramid. Now you
must go and stop it before it regains power. The spacecraft will transport you
to the Pyramid at Mt. Minokami, and increase your strength.
---------------------------------------
B10. Pyramid
---------------------------------------
You'll start at the north side of the Pyramid. MOVE to the east side, then CAST
FUDO to burn away the grass. MOVE INSIDE the now visible entrance. Inside, move
all the way to the right and pick up the Pyramid Point. Go back outside.
When you get back outside, CAST MAKIRI to fly to the top of the Pyramid. USE
the Pyramid Point to place it back on top. CAST MAKIRI again to descend on the
north side of the Pyramid. Now MOVE to the east side, then the south side. A
new doorway has now been opened. MOVE INSIDE.
Inside the Pyramid is a large maze. I only show the screens necessary to get
through. Follow the numbered doors in order to get through. The doors with 'B'
indicate areas that contain big blue strength refill balls. '#' indicates
blocks that can be broken with the War Hammer.

Take the first stairs up and fight the mini boss. Just keep moving away from it
and jump and shoot it. Once it's destroyed, the War Hammer will appear. You
need the War Hammer to destroy the blocks that have the design on them. Go back
downstairs and continue to the right. Destroy the blocks and enter the second
door here.

Unless you need to refill your strength, just move right to door number 2. If
you go down the stairs and move left, it will repeat endlessly. The guys with
axes take a few hits to kill. The flying snake ball things are a pain, you have
to hit them in the head, then they fly straight at you and you can hit them
again.

You'll want to move to the right and jump up and smash the blocks to get the
Leg Armor. It can be tricky, so may be easier to use MAKIRI. At the Buddha
statue, jump up to get the Trident on the right side. Up the stairs, there's a
mini-boss with an eye ball on a tentacle, just duck the lasers and shoot the
eye when you get a chance. Now go in door number 3.

There's no point in going to the end of this screen, there's nothing there but
possible death. Just go in the next door, number 6. The blue ball area in
the other door is the same as the previous screen, but the ball WILL be there
again if you go back.
_ Demon

|________________|6|________#_______________________|_____________________|
Just go straight to the right and up the stairs to meet the Demon. The Demon
will summon Regina, who attacks you. TALK to her 4 times, you slowly convince
her that she is possessed and she'll stop fighting you. The Demon will then
fight you.
*** BOSS BATTLE: Demon
The Demon is riding an ant-like creature that sticks its tongue out at you, so
stay to the left side of the screen. The Demon also shoots some kind of fire
ball stars at you at the same time. Try to avoid them and jump up to shoot the
Demon. You can hit it anywhere and anytime, it doesn't matter.
***
After you defeat the Demon, it frees the Dark Lord and the Pyramid begins to
collapse. You grab Regina and head back to the spaceship, which takes you back
to Summit Temple. Daikak tells you to go to the Underworld and speak to
Izanami. You will then automatically be taken to the spaceship and transported
to the Underworld.
---------------------------------------
B11. Underworld
---------------------------------------
At the gate to the Underworld, a guard prevents you from going through. USE the
Sword of Kusanagi, then TALK to the guard. Now MOVE to Misty Crossing. There
you will find the Ferryman is sleeping, there's nothing you can do, so go back
to the gate and TALK to the guard. He tells you the women at Chizu Sea can help
you. MOVE to Chizu Sea.
TALK to Toyo. Then LOOK at the bottle of nectar and Toyo will give you some.
You can TAKE the nectar to heal yourself, and you can come back here anytime
while you're in the Underworld to get healed. Now MOVE to Misty Crossing, then
USE the nectar twice.
After you've used the nectar the second time, you can TALK to the Ferryman. He
says he can take you right across to Yomotsu. MOVE to Yomotsu.
This is one creepy place. It's best to use the NOBOTA spell, so you can kill
the ogre creatures in one shot, otherwise they'll split into 4 smaller
creatures that charge at you. Try to jump up and shoot the owl-like creatures
that are sitting still before you get close, or they'll swoop down and
attack you.
Press UP to go inside the door in the tree stump, you'll meet
Amano. He says humans are not welcome here and attacks you. USE the Sword of
Kusanagi to easily defeat him. MOVE outside and continue right. Go up the
stairs to Izanami Shrine. TALK to her twice and she tells you to find the
Sacred Mirror. Go back down the stairs and continue right.
Jump over the pits and go up the stairs here to Yomotsu Shrine. Cerberus is
here, so MOVE back outside. Go back and talk to Amano, he'll tell you to get
the Harp. Move back left to Misty Crossing, then MOVE to Toki Plains.
At Toki Plains, you'll see a big rock. LOOK at the rock, then try to TAKE
something. You can't get it, so MOVE back to Misty Crossing. TALK to the
Ferryman, and he'll give you the Oar. TAKE the Oar, and MOVE to Toki Plains.
USE the Oar. Now you can TAKE the Harp of Amano. But wait, before you waste
time going back to Yomotsu and realize you have no idea how to play the Harp,
MOVE to Chizu Sea.
Back at Chizu Sea, USE the Harp, and Toyo will teach you how to play it. TAKE
some nectar if you want to. Now go back to Misty Crossing, and MOVE to Yomotsu.
In Yomotsu, move all the way right to the Shrine of Yomotsu (second stairs).
At Yomotsu Shrine again, USE the Harp here to put Cerberus to sleep and Yomotsu
appears. TALK to Yomotsu. He'll tell you the 8 swords of Fury are needed to
defeat the Dark Lord, and one of them is held by the Thunder God. MOVE back
outside, and go back to Misty Crossing. TALK to the Ferryman, and he'll take
you right to the Thunder God.
*** BOSS BATTLE: Thunder God
This thing flies around and drops lightning on you. As you shoot it, it slowly
loses pieces. The easiest way to beat it is to cast KANNON a few times. If you
take too much time, it will leave and you'll have to reset the game to
continue. Once it's defeated, you'll get the Sword of Fury. Now go back to
Yomotsu Shrine.
***
Back at Yomotsu Shrine, USE the Sword of Fury. Yomotsu tells you to go to the
Holy Bridge. Now go back to see Amano in the tree trunk, and TALK to him.
He'll tell you to look for an opening in the wall. Go back outside and move all
the way to the right. You will now see an entrance in the wall, go in.
Now at the Holy Bridge. MOVE right (or left) 4 times to find a pedestal with no
sword. USE the Sword of Fury to place it in the pedestal. MOVE inside the door
that appears. You'll need to fight a demon to get the Mirror.
*** BOSS BATTLE: Demon
This Demon has two parts, a snake-like body and a flying head part. The body
can't be hurt, you'll need to hit the head, while avoiding the body. Use KANNON
to make things easier. Once the Demon is defeated, the Sacred Mirror will fall
down to the pedestal and you will automatically receive it.
***
After the Demon battle, MOVE left (or right) 4 times until you can MOVE
outside. Now go back to the Shrine of Izanami (first stairs from beginning).
USE the Mirror in front on Izanami, then TALK to her. She'll tell you how to
summon your true power and that it's time to face the Dark Lord. You'll then
return to Summit Temple.
---------------------------------------
B12. Final Battle
---------------------------------------
At Summit Temple, Daikak will give you the Sword of Seven Branches. He'll tell
you to go revive the Serpent God and prepare to stop the Dark Lord. MOVE to
Izumo first.
At Izumo, LOOK at Kuma's necklace twice, then TALK to Kuma. He'll say you can
have the necklace. TAKE the necklace. TAKE some spaghetti too if you want. It's
not necessary to get the necklace, but it will refill your strength once when
it reaches zero. This is also your last chance to get a password. Now MOVE to
Kashima.
At Kashima Shrine, USE the Sword of Seven Branches. The Serpent God will
appear. USE the Mirror to concentrate the energy, then USE the Sword of
Kusanagi to direct the power of the Serpent God onto yourself. You will then be
transported to the final battle with the Dark Lord!
This is like an overhead shooter. The screen automatically advances.
The first enemy is easy to kill, it shoots a pillar of fire at you when it is
directly in front of you. Just move back and forth, while charging your shots
and shoot it when you pass under it.
The second enemy shoots lots of missiles, not too hard to dodge. Just keep
dodging and shooting.
The third enemy creates many miniature versions of itself. It is impossible to
beat this guy without getting seriously hurt. The easiest way to deal with this
enemy is to cast KANNON a few times until it's destroyed.
The fourth enemy shoots fireballs at you and also teleports around the screen.
Use the same strategy as the first two enemies. Just keep moving around while
dodging and shoot it when your are underneath it.
Now the final battle. The eyeballs and mouths continuously shoot fireballs at
you. They both take a number of hits to destroy them. It's best to use FUDO.
When you reach the head, keep using FUDO and destroy the mouths first, then
start shooting at the head. It will start shooting lightning bolts at you from
all angles, but they are easy to dodge. When it's about half way dead, it will
shoot more lightning, but still easy to dodge. Before you know it, it will be
destroyed.
That's it! You've won the game! Enjoy the ending.
