Space Harrier is an amazing arcade game released on the SMS along with many
other systems. Years after it was released, a 3D version was even made for the
Sony PS2. For me, Space Harrier was one of the funnest arcade games I've ever
played. Fast-paced and intense, I loved it.

This guide should hopefully provide a good overview of the game along with
giving hints and tips to help your struggle through the Fantasy Zone. This FAQ
is made only for the SMS version of Space Harrier.

[Q] Why does my character keep tripping?

[A] You're stepping over bushes. If you trip over a bush, you are
           vulnerable to enemy fire.

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+

[Q] Why does it go back to Moot after I clear Stage 13?

[A] Well, technically you beat the game. However, you go straight back
to Moot once Stage 13 is cleared.

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+

[Q] What exactly is this game's story?

[A] Wait on the opening screen for a bit. After some demos, the game's
           story should appear.

                     5.1. Moot                     [5100]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

                   Enemies: Battle Ship, Blue Orb
                   Obstacles: Various Foliage
                   Boss: Dragon

The first level is very easy. However, you'll want to watch out for fast-
moving enemies along with trees. If you hit a tree, you're as good as dead.
Watch out for the lines that the Battle Ships move toward you in. Occasionally,
three Blue Orbs will appear on-screen. You cannot affect them while they are
in their protected state. However, you can hit them when they open up to
shoot you. Move quickly before their mouth closes again.

The boss is very easy. When he starts moving in, avoid his blaze weaving
around the edge of the screen. After he gets close enough to you, he'll turn
around leaving his rear end vulnerable. Send a bunch of shots into his rump
and damage him. When the Dragon turns reddish, he is on the brink of death.
Finish him off.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.2. Geeza                    [5200]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

Enemies: Battle Ship, Lion, Green Bat
                   Obstacles: Steel Pillars, Various
                              Foliage
                   Boss: Lion Wall

The second stage is very difficult. First off, you still have to dodge foliage.
You'll be meeting some flying Green Battle Ships and Green Bats. Along with
that, Lions on the ground will race toward you. At the apex of their movement,
they will jump up. Blast them out of the way before they hit you. Not too far
into the level, you'll find some Steel Pillars of doom. Avoid these at all
costs. They cannot be destroyed. At a few points in this stage, the Lions will
arrange themselves in fours. They act like the Blue Orbs of the previous stage
except they can be destroyed even when not firing.

The boss is not that difficult. Move around a lot or else you'll hit the Lion
Wall. You don't actually have to defeat it however. Just clear the Lions that
get in your way. Try not to actually destroy the entire thing though or you'll
be smothered by it.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.3. Amar                     [5300]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

                   Enemies: Jellyfish, Battle Ship, Flying
                            Frog
                   Obstacles: Tree Pillars, Various Foliage
                   Boss: Two-Headed Snake

Amar is a pretty lively level. Among the colorful mushrooms on the ground will
be jellyfish flying through the air. You'll want to watch out for them as they
move in pretty quickly. They won't shoot at you so there's no worrying about
that. However, they move in extravagant pattersn which can become pretty
difficult to avoid. A few seconds into the level, you'll be seeing some Tree
Pillars which are in destructable. They are similar to the Steel Pillars of
the last level except they appear in much less numbers. You'll need to move
around a lot in this level if you want to pass it.

The boss in this levle is very similar to the boss you fought in the Moot
stage. However, the Two-Headed Snake obviously has two heads. With two heads,
it will blast two different lines of fire at you. Stay along the corners of
the screen and take a shot at the boss whenever you can. Like the first boss,
the Two-Headed Snake will turn around leaving its rear end vulnerable. Take
full advantage of that instance and blast its rear end. You will have to
destroy each head separately.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.4. Ceiciel                  [5400]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

                   Enemies: Battle Ship
                   Obstacles: Purple Pillars, Crystal Orb
                   Boss: Battle Mechs

This level is difficult and it isn't because of enemies. Right at the start,
the ceiling goes down and limits your field extensively (although you can
still fly around). Purple Pillars will appear to mess with you. Likewise, some
Crystal Orbs will appear on the ceiling. Both of these cannot be destroyed.
During this portion of the level, focus on dodging the obstacles without
paying much attention to the few enemies. They won't be able to hurt you much
anyway as long as you keep moving.

Eventually, the obstacles will clear out a little bit and you'll be back in
the open. Now some Battle Mechs will begin to engage you. These guys move
really fast and their projectile weapon is difficult to avoid. Move around
through the screen to avoid most of them. If you don't destroy them quickly
enough, they can run into you. This boss can be a bit difficult. However, you
will be seeing these guys later. Occasionally, they might try to go kamikaze
on you. Make sure they do not do this.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.5. Bonus Stage              [5500]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

A friendly inhabitant of Dragon Land has decided to aid you in your quest.
The idea here is to crash into as many trees as you can. Control the white
behemoth through the field. At the end, the amount of trees you knock down is
multiplied by 50,000 which can result in quite a few points.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.6. Olisis                   [5600]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

                   Enemies: Battle Mech, Missile Jet,
                   Obstacles: Tower Pillars, Various
                              Foliage
                   Boss: Blue Shapes

Once more, you enter another area full of enemies. The Tower Pillars scattered
throughout can be avoided if you stick along the top of the screen. However,
Missile Jets will fly in pretty quickly and attempt to knock you down. If you
sweep back and forth, you can avoid these projectiles barely. On the ground,
Battle Mechs will also fire at you. Do your best to stay up in the air.

Eventually, you'll be greeted by a few peanut-shaped Blue Shapes. This has
probably got to be the easiest boss yet. Circle the screen flying around in a
clockwise motion. Continually shoot at the center shape. They will attempt to
shoot at you, but their shots are easily avoided. That's that for the boss.
Onto the next stage.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.7. Lucasia                  [5700]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

                   Enemies: Elephantine, Green Battle Ship
                   Obstacles: N/A
                   Boss: Triangle Squad

This stage is a very easy stage to get through. There are no obstacles so
you don't have to worry about constantly moving out of their way. The best
strategy for this level would be to simply move your character around the edge
of the screen shooting constantly. The Elephantine on the ground are easy to
destroy and avoid. The only real enemies you'll be fighting will be a few
Green Battle Ships.

The boss is also easy. Like the previous level, the boss here involves some
random shape. The Triangle Squad will position themselves in a circle and
shoot at you. Move circularly along with them to avoid their fire. Keep your
trigger finger down and kick their behinds.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.8. Ida                      [5800]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

Enemies: Battle Ship, Lion, Brown Orb
                   Obstacles: Steel Pillars
                   Boss: Blue Cloud

Ida brings back a bunch of old enemies from past levels. The Lions remake
their appearance. Most of the level is Lion stampedes that you should blast
out of your way. Brown Orbs act just the same as Blue Orbs except they shoot
three blasts with each opening of their eye. Watch out for that along with the
various Steel Pillars rushing straight at you.

The boss is difficult in this stage. It starts out as a group of six clouds
with the main one in the middle. You'll have to destroy the surrounding clouds
before you can affect the boss. The boss will make its pass and even when it
turns back around, it will still be able to shoot you. Avoid getting hit and
you should survive.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.9. Revi                     [5900]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

                   Enemies: Battle Ship, Battle Mech
                   Obstacles: Purple Pillars, Crystal Orb
                   Boss: Ultra Mech

This stage is difficult because you are moving so fast, it's almost impossible
to dodge the obstacles. There will be a wave of a few Battle Ships here and
there, but avoiding the obstacles will be the hardest part. Try to stay up
along the top of the screen when the Crystal Orbs converge toward the bottom
and vice-versa when they are on the top.

The boss is easy for such a hard level. After a few waves of Battle Mechs, the
special Ultra Mech will appear. Just avoid his rain of fire and shoot him
out of the way into the next level.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.10. Minia                   [5010]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

                   Enemies: Battle Ship, Jellyfish
                   Obstacles: Tree Pillars, Various Foliage
                   Boss: Purple Orbs

In comparison to the previous level, Minia is actually pretty easy. You won't
be moving as fast so the various Tree Pillars won't be difficult to avoid.
However, Battle Ships will still appear in their wacky formations to shoot you
down. At certain points in the level, Jellyfish will just fly in out of
nowhere. This is your cue to move around like crazy.

The boss is fairly easy although the Purple Orbs do have a rapid rate of fire.
Circle them clockwise hitting them with your weapon fire. Don't let their
shots hit you and you should be fine.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.11. Parms                   [5011]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

                   Enemies: Battle Mech
                   Obstacles: Ice Pillars, Various Foliage
                   Boss: Two-Headed Stone Dragon

The enemies here consist of Battle Mechs so this stage will be somewhat
difficult. Luckily, the obstacles won't get in your way too much if at all.
There will be Ice Pillar Walls along one side of the screen so make sure you
don't accidentally run into them. Fly around the edge of the screens to avoid
the Battle Mech fire. They shoot fast but if you have enough spunk (I love that
word), you'll break through.

The boss, luckily, is easy. It's basically a Two-Headed Stone Dragon similar
to the Two-Headed Snake you fought a while ago. Sweep along the edge of the
screen while shooting away. Avoid its fiery breath. You'll have to destroy
both heads to defeat it.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.12. Bonus Stage             [5012]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

You know what to do here. Hit as many obstacles as you can and your score will
skyrocket itself.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.13. Drail                   [5013]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

                   Enemies: Battle Mech, Missile Jet
                   Obstacles: Tower Pillars
                   Boss: Central Core

This stage is fairly simple to get through unscathed. Battle Mechs and
Missile Jets make up the main enemy force. If you move along the edges of the
screen, you should be able to avoid most or all enemy fire. By now, you should
already be capable of taking down Battle Mechs as they come. Avoid the Tower
Pillars.

The boss is simple. Move in a clockwise pattern to avoid its fire. Converge
your fire upon the Central Core. If you know what you're doing, none of its
shots will hit you whatsoever.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.14. Asute                   [5014]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

                   Enemies: Battle Ship
                   Obstacles: Purple Pillars, Crystal Orb
                   Boss: Jellyfish Head

This is probably the hardest level yet. Asute takes the same format as Revi
by limiting your area. This time, you are going super-fast so avoiding them
will be a bit harder. The key to this stage is knowing that the less you move,
the less you'll be hit. Try to stay in the center moving only when a Purple
Pillar is going dead-center right into you. The Crystal Orbs should be a key
as to where you should fly whether it be the top or bottom. Try to ignore the
Battle Ships for the most part.

The boss is similar to the Blue Cloud boss you fought previously. Protected
by five Jellyfish, the Jellyfish Head will attack you with some defense.
Lucky for you, the Jellyfish are easily defeated. Once you reveal the inner
body, just shoot it down to destroy it.

                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
                     5.15. Vicel                   [5015]
                   -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

Enemies: Battle Ship, Blue Orb, Battle
                            Mech, Lion
                   Obstacles: Steel Pillars, Power Grid,
                              Various Foliage
                   Boss: Stone Dragon

Without a doubt, this stage holds many different types of enemies. You'll be
meeting a squad of Blue Orbs at first. Defeating them might prove a bit
difficult as Steel Pillars line the ground. Eventually, they will be replaced
by indestructable Power Grids which work as barracades. Don't run into them
or you'll die of course.

Defeating this boss requires a tactic that you've been using since the first
level. Just fly around the screen and wait for the Stone Dragon to make his
passes. When he turns around, unleash a wave of fire on his butt. Fry him and
advance.

                   Enemies: Battle Mech
                   Obstacles: Various Foliage
                   Boss: White Battle Mechs

This is a very hectic level although it's fairly short. Battle Mechs will
continuously appear in groups of two or three. These variants are much more
dangerous and shoot much faster. Fly around often to hopefully stray some
shots away from you.

The boss is pretty easy to defeat. Basically, you have a giant Battle Mech
generator. Just destroy the Battle Mechs as they come and you'll be fine
at the moment.

Enemies: Lion, Battle Ship, Battle Mech
                   Obstacles: Purple Pillars, Crystal Orb,
                              Tower Pillars, Various
                              Foliage
                   Boss: Crystal Glob

This level is fairly difficult. It begins with a bunch of Purple Pillars and
Crystal Orbs all over the place. Lions will appear and rotate in a clockwise
motion. This portion of the level can be hard as you don't have much room to
maneuver. Throughout the level, you'll be meeting Battle Mechs and various
Battle Ships.

The boss of this level looks intimidating. However, it is really pretty easy.
The boss himself is surrounded by a gigantic blob. Foliage will be thrown at
you constantly and the two cat-like creatures on his sides will shoot at you.
Destroy the Crystal Blob first and then concentrate your fire on the figure in
the middle to destroy him.

                   Enemies: N/A
                   Obstacles: N/A
Boss: Two-Headed Snake, Jellyfish Head, Dragon, Lion
Head, Two-Headed Stone Dragon, Fire Snakes

The final fight is an array of bosses. The first to appear is the Two-Headed
Snake. Use the same strategy as before and blast him out of the way. Once he
is down, you'll fight the Jellyfish Head who is the same as before. Clear the
Jellyfish away from him and then focus fire on his head. Third, you'll fight
the Dragon of the first level. Wait for him to make his pass while at the
same time, pounding his butt with weapon fire. After he's down, a whole new
boss will appear. Defeat the Lion Head much like you defeated the Jellyfish
Head. Beware as the Lions will charge you at the end.

Afterwards, the Two-Headed Stone Dragon will come in to do some damage. Move
around and shoot down one head. Then concentrate on the other head to destroy
it. The next monster appearing is the Blue Cloud. Destroy the blue clouds
surrounding the head. Afterwards, destroy the head. The boss after the Blue
Cloud is the Stone Dragon you fought before. In the distance, you can
probably make out the shape of the palace.

With the defeat of the Stone Dragon, the palace will crumble and you will
be thrust into another battle. The best course of action with this fiery boss
is circling the screen going clockwise. The fireballs they send in your
direction can be difficult to pinpoint. Aim for the heads of both Fire
Snakes. Destroy both snakes to end them. Whew.

~ Space Harrier is a very fast-paced game. Therefore, you'll have to keep
moving if you want to avoid enemy fire. Try to have Harrier move around
the screen in circles or X-patterns to hopefully save yourself.

~ Keep firing even when there aren't enemies on-screen. They come in big
numbers so having a quick trigger finger helps a lot.

~ Observe the situation and choose whether to run on the ground or hover
in the air. Sometimes, enemies come flying through the air. To avoid
them, stick closer to the ground. Other times when fighting mech-like
creatures or bosses, it's best to hover above and rain fire from
    there.

~ Watch enemy shots. Their shots are very large and easy to notice. Do
your best to fly away from enemy fire.

~ Although you should be moving at all times, don't move right into
enemy fire. That's just common sense.
