O=============================================================================O

Sega has been a long-time producer of many games, of many genres. One of these
less-made is the chess ideal. Sega Chess, obviously, is a chess game. You can
play chess with the computer or choose to go 1 on 1 against your friends to
see who is the chess master.

This is not a chess book. I'm not too much of a chess nut, and even if I was,
I wouldn't be providing hours and hours of strategy. This guide is designed to
familiarize you with the game of chess and the basics of this game. With no
further ado, here's the guide. Checkmate.

O=============================================================================O

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+

[Q] What exactly is the difference between a 2D board and a 3D
             board?

[A] A 2D board has the camera appear directly above the chess board
to create a 2D image. A 3D board has the camera appear from your
viewpoint as a player. I prefer the 2D board because it gives you
a better view, but it's really your choice.

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+

[Q] I keep getting my butt kicked. Any strategies?

[A] This is not a chess book. Want some strategy? Go read some chess
             books.

=-----------------------------------------------------------------------------=
4.2. The Point of the Game                              [4200]
=-----------------------------------------------------------------------------=

The point of the game is to capture the opponent's king piece. Each side,
black or white (there are sometimes variations with black being red, et cetera)
has a collection of pieces. Eight pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops,
a queen, and his king. Each piece can only move a certain way (Read section
4.3.) and with strategy, you must move your pieces to capture the enemy queen.

You can capture an enemy piece by jumping onto it. However, to win, you need
to Checkmate the king. The king is only in Checkmate once it has absolutely
no options. Say a king is under assault by a queen from its diagonal. This is
called Check as the king can still move out of the way. With your pieces, you
need to cut off the king's options to gain Checkmate, and to win the game.

=-----------------------------------------------------------------------------=
              4.3. The Pieces                                         [4300]
=-----------------------------------------------------------------------------=

Let's take a look at the pieces of the board:

                        A   B   C   D   E   F   G   H
                       ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___

                   1  | R | K | B | Q | Ki| B | K | R |  1
                      |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|

                        A   B   C   D   E   F   G   H

[P] The Pawns are the least important pieces of the game.
They can move forward one square, EXCEPT at the start
of the game in which they can move forward two squares.
Pawns are capable of capturing by moving diagonal only.
Therefore, if a piece blocks a Pawns route forward, it
             cannot move forward.

[R] The Rooks (Also known as a Castle) are the corner pieces
at first. A Rook's most well-known move is called a
"Castle." If you move the King's side Bishop and Knight,
you can move the King towards its Rook and you will be
castled in creating a barrier of Pawns (Take it you
haven't moved them yet) and your Rook. Rooks are capable
of moving an infinite amount of squares horizontally or
vertically, but not diagonally. Capture by the Rook's
             horizontal or vertical.

[K] Knights are a unique unit which can be used to your
advantage, if done correctly. You have to know that
the Knight has a move which no other unit is capable
of pulling off. Knights move in an "L" pattern which
causes it to always differentiate color from the tile
it jumped from. For example, if a Knight is on a white
tile, it must land on a black tile through the "L"
             pattern.

[B] Bishops are another useful unit. Bishops are only
capable of moving diagonally and can be used against
Rooks especially. Because they can only move to their
diagonal, they MUST remain on the same tile they start
with for the entirity of the game. A Bishop on a white
tile will stay on that white tile for the entire game.
Therefore, a king is safe from a black tile Bishop as
long as the king stays on a white tile.

[Q] The most versatile unit of the game is the Queen. The
Queen is capable of moving an infinite number of tiles
horizontally, vertically, and to her diagonal. However,
you only receive one Queen at the start of the game.
It is really best to keep the Queen alive as she plays
a major role in the checkmating of the King, much of
the time. Because of her versatility, you will want to
             keep her safe.

[K] The King, as we all know, is the point of the game. The
King can move one tile horizontally, vertically, or
diagonally. DO NOT use your King as an assaulter and
keep him protected with many possible escape routes to
             keep him safe.

I hope you enjoyed Sega Chess and the help of this guide through the basics of
the game! This has been a work by Dark Vortex. Beam me up, Scotty.

GameFAQs - The largest FAQ archive on the net. Thanks to CJayC for accepting
this piece of work. He hasn't failed us yet.

Y.T.W.S.R. - Only a few selected people might know what I'm talking about here.
Since I'm not one to give it away, I would still like to thank
this group for their support and motivation throughout the
            lifespan of this entire FAQ.

Masamune3 - Bringing up the SMS Completion Project. I'd admit, I would never
have written this guide without it.

The FCSB - They didn't help too much but what can I say, where would I be
