Hello and welcome to my Rampage FAQ for the SMS version of this game! Most
probably if you are viewing this guide, you too played this game in your
youth. It was pretty popular at the time, though to be fair I can't really see
what the appeal was any more. So prepare for a grind through Generic America!
The reason that I'm writing this FAQ is to help with the SMS FAQ Completion

C h a r a c t e r s

Unlike in the NES version of this game, you will get to pick from one of THREE
characters. These characters are supposed to be mutated humans. You can see
this for yourself when you lose a life and they return to their human form.
GEORGE: A King Kong-like gorilla. Except he's brown and I'm pretty sure King
Kong was black. At least in the Peter Jackson remake he was. When
playing as George, grab hold of the woman in the red dress to earn a
massive point score.
LIZZIE: Lizzie is a huge reptillian lizard. Looks kind of like a dinosaur,
possibly Godzilla? Grab hold of the guy in the yellow shirt for a
massive point score (not to be confused with the woman in the yellow
jacket).
RALPH : A huge werewolf. He's the one that's out of place here, how many
werewolves decide to destroy cities? At least King Kong and Godzilla
have previous. Grab the man in the suit for the point score with
Ralph.
It should be noted that each character has no advantage over the other. Just
pick the one you like the look of.
B a s i c G a m e p l a y
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• First of all you should select if you want a 1 or 2 player game. It can be
fun working together or battling it out for the most points!
• Next you can select your character. I quite like Lizzie, but George is the
"face" of Rampage.
• You will begin in San Fransisco. Your task is the raise every single
building on screen to the ground.
• To do this, stand at the side of a building and press up. Your monster
should climb up the side of the building. Hit the 2 button to punch directly
forwards. This should smash a hole in the building. Once you have destroyed
33% of the building in this fashion, it will crack all the way along and
begin to crumble. Make sure you get off before it is destroyed, otherwise
you will lose health.
• You can punch a different size hole in the building by pressing diagonally
down. This can help speed up the process of destroying the building, but
it will also stop items appearing in the hole.
• Sometimes buildings overlap each other. If you climb the front one, you can
attack the one behind it by punching upwards.
• Once the building is reduced to rubble, move onto the next. Once all the
buildings have been destroyed, you will complete the stage.
• After finishing a stage, you will go to a black screen. On here you can see
your health, your score and how many lives you had. Moving on from this
screen will take you to the next stage.
• Stopping you from your completing your work will be various enemies. At
first these will just be civilians, but as you progress later into the game,
more and more challenging enemies will be introduced.
• It's really hard to avoid enemy projectiles in this game, people are really
good shots. Although, this should stop you trying. Attacking the buildings
with the most enemies in first will help you.
• Sometimes you will see a bridge over water. Jumping on this bridge will
destroy it. Though this may seem foolish, it will stop the advancement of
tanks and police cars.
• On occasion you will see a man with a bomb run on screen. He will drop the
bomb in front of a building usually. When it goes off, it will sometimes
destroy the building, saving you time and effort. This will only work on
smaller buildings or larger ones that have already been damaged.
• It will take a few seconds for enemies to begin appearing at the start of a
stage. Take advantage of this to quickly take down a building without
resistance.
• At the end of a stage, you are waiting about for a few seconds. Watch out
for any enemies still kicking around that can sap your energy.

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
You will begin with three lives. You will lose a life once the energy bar in
the top left hand corner is depleted. When this happens, your monster will
return to their human form. Hit the 2 button to transform them back and use up
a life.
Once you have lost all three lives, you will be given a final score. You can
hit the 2 button again to continue, but your score will be reset. You can
do this as many times as you like because you will have infinite continues.
There are various things that affect your monster's health. Let's start off
with the bad:
• Enemy bullets or projectiles
• Falling from a crumbling building
• Going underwater will steadily reduce energy
• Punching an electric sign will electrocute your monster
You can recover health by:
• Eating certain items (see below)
You can earn extra lives by:
• Eating the woman in the yellow jacket who appears in certain levels

From time to time, you will find an item behind a wall that you just smashed.
Some of these items will help you regain health, whilst others will take it
away. Here's a list of the stuff that is unsafe to eat:
• Cactus
• Dynamite
• Bathtub
• Lightbulb (switched on)
• Poison (skull)
• Toaster (before toast has popped)
• Toilet
These things will either sap some health, or stun your monster momentarily.
You can assume that everything else is safe for consumption. However, a few
things to note:
• Eating the lady is the bathtub is fine, just don't eat the actual tub
• You can eat the lightbulb when it is switched off
• You can eat the toaster when the toast has popped up

BOATER : A man in a boat. He sometimes has mermaid in there with him.
POINTS: 500
MANHOLE : Every now and then you will see a man poke his head up through a
manhole. Whack him when he does this to send the manhole cover
flying off screen. Sometimes with won't work and you will simply
eat the man. POINTS: 500
PHOTOGRAPHER: Sometimes when you break a wall, a photographer will be
revealed. Quickly eat them before they take a picture. The flash
will stun your monster, causing you to fall from the building.
PICKUP : The pickup won't do much apart from drive forward. POINTS: 200
TAXI : See Pickup above. Hit it for 100 points
TRAM : Only appears on stages with tram tracks (obviously). Hit this to
send it shooting across the screen. POINTS: 500

HELICOPTER : The helicopters will fly back and forth trying to get a lock on
you. Once they have one, they will dive towards you are fire
three bullets. Avoid these by jumping or by moving out of the
way. Helicopters usually appear in groups of two or three. Smash
them before they get to attack. POINTS: 750
NAT. GUARD : There are two types of national guardsmen. There are ones with
guns and ones with TNT. They are both the most common type of
enemy. They will hang out of windows and frequently attack you.
Often there is little you can do to avoid their attacks, so make
sure you go and kill them quickly! POINTS: 50
PARATROOPER: These guys will parachute down from above and land on top of
buildings. These will then proceed to shoot at you. Either jump
from the side of a building and punch them, or destroy the
building that they are on. POINTS: 50
POLICE : The police car for some reason has a huge cannon attached to the
front of it. It acts similar to the tank, but has a much better
rate of fire. Climb a building or jump over to avoid damage. If
you get behind the police car, smash it to pieces! POINTS: 500
TANK : The tank will roll forward along the road and fire a powerful
projectile at you. Climb a building or jump over a tank to avoid
it. However, if you are climbing a building and you are hit, you
will fall off.
Once you are behind the tank, you are safe from attack. When
faced with water, the tank will just drive in and destroy itself,
just like other vehicles. POINTS: 1000
STORMCLOUD : The cloud will pass overhead and fire bolts of lightning at you.
Since there's little you can do in the way of stopping this, you
should do your best to avoid being hit. Fortunately, these are
rather rare.

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
There are cities that you will travel to and there are 5 stages in each
city. The cities that you visit are San Fransisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas,
Dallas, St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York.
I can't give you a step-by-step walkthrough because this isn't that kind of
game. Pretty much all the stages are the same anyway.
When you move to a new city, the first couple of stages seem to have a drop
in difficulty. E.g. Sanfransico 5 has a lot more enemies that Los Angeles 1.
You should take advantage of this and blast through the first couple of
stages.
After you have visited all 10 cities and completed all five stages in each,
you will get the ending scene. Well done!
