King's Quest is a short, yet rewarding adventure game released by the Parker
Brothers for play on a few consoles including the Sega Master System (of which
this FAQ is written for) along with the PC. King's Quest starts off one of
the earliest game series ever.

King's Quest is an adventure game in which you move a character around giving
him orders. His life depends on your cunning and ability to solve problems.
There will be many obstacles. The walkthrough included in this guide should
help you beat King's Quest.

[Q] I can't cross the bridge over the moat at the beginning. I keep
         falling in! What's up?

[A] Indeed, it might take a while until you actually "master" crossing
small bridges. Due to the game's angle, you might think that you're
walking onto the bridge when you're really not. Position yourself
a bit higher than the bridge looks on-screen. If you don't get that
         "You died" message, you're fine.

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+

[Q] At the screen with the Pebbles, I walk north and I always die in
         the river.

[A] There is a rather clever trick here. To avoid the fatal river, move
your character up to the left edge before walking onto the screen
with the river. Stay as far left as possible and enter the next
screen. You should hopefully appear on the plot of land to the left
         of the river.

You start off just outside the castle. A moat will prevent you from just
"walking" from one end to the other. Use the bridge and cross the river over
to the other side. If you accidentally fall in, it's lights out for you. Once
on the other side, keep moving leftward until the edge of the screen. The
other side has the castle door. Walk up to it and press the Start Button.
Choose from the menu [Open Door] and you'll go inside.

The castle's lobby has nothing of interest. Walk forward and then to your
left. The king of the castle is located here. Trot up to his throne and select
[Talk To King]. He'll tell you that he is slowly getting older and his death
is near. However, you can take the throne IF you do what he says. Your
objective is to find the three magic objects: The Magic Shield, the Magic
Mirror, and the Magic Chest Of Gold.

There's nothing else to do here. Go back right and then exit the castle. Once
outside, notice the bridge to the west. Cross over it. While at the moat's
side, begin moving west into the next screen. The area is empty except for a
fairly noticeable rock. It's very difficult to find (Haha, that was
sarcasm...). Walk up in front of it and select [Push Rock] from the menu.
Make sure you're standing in front of it or you'll be crushed by yourself.
(Crush yourself, eh?)

Moving the rock will reveal a hole in the ground. Don't walk into it stupidly
or you'll fall in. Instead, select [Look At Hole] to find a Dagger! Then
select [Get Dagger] to pick it up. Now, begin to move north into the next
screen. There's a fairly large tree here. From your operations menu (2
Button), select [Climb] Get to the top of the tree where a next resides.
You can fall off which results in death. Guess he bruises easily.

Anyhow, slowly climb to the Golden Egg in the center. From the menu, select
[Get Egg] to pick that little thing up. The Golden Egg is now yours! Climb
yourself down slowly and get off the tree. With that, head west. A message
on-screen will notify you of a dangerous wolf in the area. Luckily, you can
still walk past. Just don't get in the way of the wolf or you'll be dinner.
Walk to the far side of the screen continuing west. At the next area, locate
a well.

Walk up to the well and [Cut Rope]. After hacking at the rope, [Get Bucket]
and then select [Lower Rope] from the menu. If it won't let you do that, make
sure you're standing by the crank. Of course, that's common sense. Now stand
by the well and select [Climb] from the operation menu. After a second, you'll
fall into the well, and all appears hopeless. However, bring up the operation
menu again and select [Swim]. There's a terrifying dragon in the next room.
Walk up close to him and [Throw Water]. The dragon flies away leaving you with
a prize.

In the room is the Magic Mirror. [Get Mirror] to pick up the first of your
three objectives. Go back into the well and [Fill Bucket] again. Now walk
back into the cave with the dragon through the door on the left. The next
room is empty so just leave through the south end. From here, just go south
two more screens. Once there, a tree will appear to have fallen over. [Look
At Stump] and find out that there's a Pouch inside the stump. Now [Get Pouch]
to pick it up. The Pouch is full of diamonds!

Now move west one screen. Apart from a peaceful pond, there's nothing here.
Continue northward. There's a large pen holding a goat. You can kill it, but
let's not as the goat is helpful. Head west toward the center of the area. A
message will notify you of your Fairy Godmother! Wait for her to appear and
let her put a spell on you. With that, head north one screen. On the ground
is a patch of clovers. One of them is four-sided. [Get Clover] to pick it up,
then head back south. Turn west to find a large carrot garden.

[Get Carrot] to pick up one of those orange-ish thingies. Head back east and
then north to the clover patch. Head west at this point. Once at a small
lake, turn north and continue that way. There's nothing on the next screen so
just go west from there. [Get Bowl] to pick it up. Keep going west to locate a
tree with walnuts surrounding it. Stand next to a walnut and [Get Walnut].
Congratulations, you now have a Golden Walnut... er yeah.

Head north now and the game will notify you of a thieving dwarf! Watch out for
him. At this point, move east. Walk over to the creek's edge (without actually
jumping in). [Get Pebbles] to pick them up. Now we have to go north. However,
when you're doing this, be sure not to walk into the river! It sounds stupid,
but it'll be fatal. Instead of walking toward the center of the north end,
try to keep yourself as far left as possible. Then go north to avoid the
river.

On the narrow plot of land you're standing on, head west. The game will notify
you of a dangerous ogre. If the spell is still on you, it should protect you
from the ogre. Keep moving west to the next screen where you'll find a log
cabin. Go one more screen left and move through the door. It appears to be
in pretty bad shape. Walk near the man and [Give Bowl]. He'll accept it and
the Bowl will appear on the table. Walk near the Bowl and select [Fill Bowl].
Magically, the Bowl becomes filled with a hot stew. With that, he offers you
his Fiddle. Walk near it and [Get Fiddle].

Leave the house and head south. You'll fall into a lake. Select [Swim] and
swim to the opposite corner. Head south another screen to locate a bright-
looking house. The house is actually a Gingerbread House. Walk up to its door,
and select [Eat Candy]. A voice from inside notices that you are eating away
at the house. Now [Open Door] and walk inside.

There is a witch inside this house. Wait for her to stand by the open flame.
Then walk up behind her and [Push Witch] to take her out. If the witch isn't
there, just walk up to the cupboard to the right of the chimney. Select [Open
Door] to open the cupboard. Then select [Get Cheese] to pick up the Cheese
inside. Walk up next to her bed and [Get Note]. It says "Sometimes it is wise
to think backwards." Strange. With that, leave the cheery little house.
Backtrack back to the carrot patch and head west from there. Remember the
goat? Stop when you see him.

[Open Door] and walk inside. Trot up next to the goat and [Show Carrot]. The
goat will begin to follow you. Go south three screens until you reach the
troll on the bridge. It appears that goats hate trolls. The following goat
butts the troll off the bridge and ceases to exist. Go west across the bridge
the troll was covering. A gnome will pace around on the next screen. Walk up
near him and guess the gnome's name. You might as well just guess incorrectly
three times. He'll hand you the Gold Key. Remember the big tree that held the
Egg? Get over there and head one screen north to find a door in the
mountainside.

Walk up to the big door and [Unlock Door] to open it. [Open Door] and slowly
hop inside. Climbing the stairs inside can definitely be difficult so watch
your step. Walk the stairs all the way to the top and find an enclosed area
hidden in the clouds. You do not want to slip off the clouds here. Go one
screen south. The tree on the right has a hole toward its base. Step toward
it and [Look At Hole]. Inside the hole is a Slingshot. [Get Slingshot] to
pick it up.

Go back north and then west. There's a giant in this area holding a chest.
Avoid him (he's pretty stupid) at the moment. Wait around a bit until the
giant gets tired and lays down to sleep. Quickly walk up to the laid down
giant and [Get Chest]. Now we're done here. Walk back to the cave leading
down to earth. Descend the staircase (watch your step). At the bottom, leave
the cave and turn east. Walk toward the middle of the screen and an elf will
appear.

[Talk To Elf] and he'll hand you a Magic Ring which will make you invisible
only once. Now head one screen north, two screens east, one screen south, and
finally two screens east. To cross the lake, jump into it and [Swim]. The
next screen is the screen where you left that dragon if you remember. Wait
around a little bit for the condor to come in. Then [Jump] onto it and let it
take you to someplace. Fly through the skies until you are dropped into some
random location.

There's a hole here, but ignore it for now. Instead, move west. Find the
Mushroom on the ground and [Get Mushroom]. Now move back east and fall down
the hole. Go south and then follow the path west. There's a large cave rat
in the next room. [Give Cheese] to make him scuttle away. [Open Door] that
the rat was guarding. The next room has a weird creature running around.
However, the Four-Leaf Clover you picked attracted leprechauns around you.
[Play Fiddle] and they'll disappear.

The next room has the leprechaun king. [Get Sceptre] and [Get Shield] picking
up both items. Go through the small doorway on the west wall. Climb the stairs
to the top. However, there's a problem. The door is too small for you!
However, [Eat Mushroom] and exit. With that, the path back home is clear.
Congratulations!
