1- Introduction

This game, made by Sega for the Sega Master System, was released in 1990.

No game instruction booklet was available to me for the writing of this FAQ.
As such, objects and characters will be identified as they appear on the
screen.

On to the game...

As soon as you start the game, you get some scrolling text which sets the
stage:

“In the beginning of the 1990s, violence was spreading throughout the entire
world. The disturbances centered exclusively around a group of international
terrorists whose purpose was to terrorize and massacre the innocent.
The United Nations ordered two seasoned veterans, John Jackson and Jack
Thomas, to destroy the syndicate.
Carrying only small automatic arms, the adventurous pair set out on their
mission.”

Press 1(X) to see the pair of warriors shoot up the screen in such a manner as
to make the game’s title appear. You then get a choice of a one or two player
game. I didn’t want to expose a friend to this prehistoric button masher, so I
chose a 1-player game by pressing button 1(X).

The warrior wearing the white headband, which I presume to be Jack Johnson,
shuffles to the right and off-screen.

On the next screen, you get to choose between EASY and DIFFICULT. Not willing
to spend any more time than necessary on this game, I opted for EASY.

2- Display

The main display screen is simple.

Your character is confined to the bottom of the screen and can only move
horizontally. Enemies will also move horizontally across the screen, but at
various distances from your character.

The top portion of the screen displays how many lives you have, the number of
bombs (grenades) in your inventory, your score and the time line. The first
three items are self-explanatory. The time line is comprised of a series of
white bars which gradually disappear as time elapses. When these bars are
gone, the scene is over. This means that it is not necessary to eliminate all
the enemies encountered in order to progress.

Keep in mind that there is no life meter. One hit and you lose a life.

3- Basics

    3.1- Controls
=============================================================================

Since I ran the game on an emulator, I’ve no information for the SMS
controller. Instead, I used a PC gamepad. Its configuration was as follows:

DIRECTION PAD:
Pressing LEFT or RIGHT on the Direction Pad permits you to go in that
direction. UP and DOWN are not used to move your character.

Pressing any direction and 1(X) permits you to move the targeting box anywhere
on the screen. Note that this does not also move your character at the same
time. So you can only move the targeting box or the character. This
configuration can be frustrating when there are numerous enemies on-screen and
they are taking multiple shots at your character.

SELECT:
Not used.

START:
Pause/unpause.

X BUTTON (1 ON SMS):
This button is used at the start screen to make selections and start the
actual game.
During the game, you fire your weapon (machine gun) by pressing it.

A BUTTON (2 ON SMS):
This button is used to throw bombs (grenades).

    3.2- Weapons and items

You obviously need an array of weapons to combat whatever enemies you will
encounter. The syndicate will certainly throw everything it can at you.

Machine gun:
Your basic weapon.
Tapping 1(X) shoots a bullet in the space within the targeting square.
You cannot run out of bullets and these projectiles are useless against tanks.
Oddly enough, they can be used against armored bosses. It can, however, take
many bullets to wear them down.

Bombs (grenades):
Your alternate weapon.
Tapping 2(A) tosses a grenade within the targeting square.
Obviously, grenades cause more damage, but are available in limited numbers.

    3.3- Item Pick-ups

Item pick-ups are obtained by eliminating enemies. The pick-ups drop straight
down from the enemy’s location. Simply touch the pick-up to acquire it.

B Icon: This icon provides you character with 10 grenades. Save any grenades
you pick up for bosses. Keep in mind that unused grenades carry over to the
next mission.

F Icon: This icon’s use has yet to be determined. (Increased strength of fire
power?)

R Icon: This icon’s use has yet to be determined.

S Icon: This icon’s use has yet to be determined.(Speed?)

4- Walkthrough

Onto the walkthrough.

My plan is to get you through these missions as quickly and efficiently as
possible. I do not know if this game has any hidden objectives or whatnot, but
I am not worrying about getting them done.

    4.1- Mission 1: From the Jungle to the Prairie
=============================================================================

Scene 1:

The scene has a dirt path that leads to a forest in the distance.

Your only enemies here are Riflemen who require one bullet to take down. They
walk across the screen and stop to take a shot before moving on. At the start,
there is only one soldier at a time. As you progress in the scene, they start
coming out in groups of 3 or 4.

Scene 2:

I guess you are supposed to be in a forest with mountains in the background.

There are now some green tanks with an occasional Rifleman. These vehicles
roll across the screen and stop to take two shots before moving on. As
indicated earlier, bullets do not damage tanks. Simply avoid their shots and
concentrate on any Riflemen which show up.

Scene 3:

The same dirt path which appears to be at the foot of some odd-looking
mountains.

The enemies in this scene comprise Riflement and light tanks (brown). The
light tanks behave in the same way as they regular tanks, apart from the fact
that more than two can appear on-screen at the same time. Use the same
strategy as scene 2.

Scene 4: Boss Fight (Rocket launcher)

This is a huge armoured and tracked vehicle which is equipped with a rocket
launcher and six guns. The guns shoot at irregular intervals and in groups of
two or three. The rocket launcher is for show, but must still be destroyed to
defeat this boss.

First, concentrate on throwing whatever grenades you have against the guns,
until they are completely destroyed. One of the issues I have with this game
is that you are never sure if you’ve “connected” with a hit, because there is
no flash or any other indicator of the sort. By my count, two grenades were
required per gun. Following this, use another two or three grenades to destroy
the rocket launcher.

Whew! It’s done!

Wait! What the…?

A new vehicle makes its way onto the scene. It appears to be some sort of
armoured personnel carrier (APC) which has the stunning ability to split into
two distinct parts which go off in different directions. Due to the phenomenon
of “no hit indication”, I was unable to determine if the hits were only valid
when the parts were separated.

Similar to the rocket launcher, the vehicle shoots two to three bullets at
once from what appears to be slits in the side. Dodge the shots and throw
whatever grenades you have left by aiming at the slits of one particular
section of the APC. If you are lucky, you might get more grenades while doing
this. Otherwise, just keep shooting at those same slits until they are
destroyed and that the section blows up. While enjoying the added room of
eliminating half of the APC’s firepower, take care of the next section in the
same manner.

When that happens, Jackson casually walks off…

    4.2- Mission 2 (Battling in the wasteland)
=============================================================================

Scene 1:

The setting for this stage is, uh, yeah, kinda desolate. It looks like a
desert with some rocks strewn about. There are also some rock formations
visible in the distance.

Enemies include Riflemen and Helicopters. Consider them to be like Tanks in
the air. Shooting at them only seems ineffective if you aim at the rotor. Or
you can simply avoid their bursts of fire and concentrate on taking out the
Riflemen.

Scene 2:

We’ve moved closer to the rock formations. They now appear to be a canyon
wall.

Things start to get hectic, here, with up to three different enemies on-screen
at the same time. The enemies include Riflemen, Jet Fighters and ATVs.
Contrary to other enemies, the Jet Fighters fly in from the background. Aim a
couple of shots at a jet’s canopy (kills the pilot?) to take it down.

Note, however, that trying to take down a jet distracts from the Riflemen and
ATVs on the ground. The latter pair should be your priority, since evading a
Jet Fighter’s shots is easier.

The ATVs move in the background, near the canyon wall. They stop every once in
a while to take a shot at you. One hit seems to take them out.

Scene 3:

Still closer to the canyon wall.

In this scene, the Riflemen have become Grenadiers capable of throwing
grenades at your character. In fact, that is all they seem to be able to do.
Although there are only Grenadiers and their grenades are fairly easy to
evade, the fact that up to seven or more enemies can be on-screen at once
still makes this scene a risky proposition.

Scene 4: Boss Fight (Artillery Guns)

The battle occurs in the same landscape where your character does not need
camo.

At the start of the fight, there are two sets of two stationary Artillery Guns
in the foreground, soon joined by a mobile unit of two guns in the background.
The guns eventually begin shooting shells in the sky and what goes up must
come down. After a short while, the shells start raining down upon your
character.

The good news is that the shells can be shot out of the sky and some may even
drop a pick-up. The bad news is that this is quite pointless. Simply evade the
shells and concentrate your fire on the moving Artillery Guns. Once this
vehicle is destroyed, start eliminating the guns in the foreground by shooting
at the cannons. Take out one emplacement and then the other.

Jackson walks off like a boss.

    4.3- Mission 3 (At the edge of the village)
=============================================================================

Scene 1:

As stated in the name of the mission, you are at the edge of the village.
Jackson stands in front of a wall which has an opening for a path. Buildings
can be seen just beyond the wall.

Paratroopers make their appearance in this scene. These guys can take a shot
at Jackson while they float down and then run across the background.

About halfway through the scene, Riflemen start to emerge from behind the
walls as the Paratroopers become thick in the air.

Scene 2:

This scene takes places within the village and starts with a crowd of Riflemen
running across the screen. This continues as an increasing number of Riflemen
continue to occupy the screen. Stay alert in order not to get trapped in a
corner by their shots.

Scene 3:

Jackson is standing in front of what appears to be an industrial building with
a smoke stack.

As the scene begins, Riflemen move in the background and are soon joined by
tanks. Take enough shots at their turret and they go boom.

Scene 4: Boss Fight (Gun Emplacements)

This boss is comprised of four Gun Emplacements. Each gun has a yellow turret
which revolves a number of times before shooting. Concentrate your fire on one
turret at a time.

After a certain amount of time, Helicopters will appear in the background and
simply hover, while taking shots at Jackson. You can delay the Helicopters’
appearance if you take out the Gun Emplacements in a certain order. And so,
start with the centre-left, followed by the right one. After these two, it
does not matter which you proceed with. This way, you shouldn’t have to deal
with more than two Helicopters.

After the fourth Gun Emplacement is dealt with, Jackson struts off to the
right.

    4.4- Mission 4 (Desperate struggle at the seashore)
=============================================================================

Scene 1:

Jackson is standing on what appears to be a riverbank (seashore?). There is a
pipe at each end of this riverbank. I wonder what will come out of these
pipes, Super Mario?

As the scene begins, there are Scuba Divers who surface to take pot shots at
Jackson. Notice how these guys just walk away after the shot. Is this really a
river or a wading pool?

About a quarter of the way through the scene, Grenadiers show up on the
opposing bank and toss grenades in Jackson’s direction.

Scene 2:

Jackson appears to be on a lakeshore more than on a seashore. Or maybe it’s a
bay...

More Scuba Divers which seem to levitate at water level. And it does not
matter how far out they are from the shore. Maybe the Holy Spirit permits them
to stroll across the water.

Helicopters soon make an appearance. You cannot afford to take the time
required to shoot them down. There are too many Scuba Divers which you need to
pay attention to.

Scene 3:

Finally! A real beach! And what looks like a dock with a ship in the
background. This has to be the seashore!

Another oddity...Riflemen appear to simply emerge from the sand and take a
shot before running away.

Riflemen are soon followed by Scuba Divers and Helicopters. Yeah, it gets a
little crowded.

Scene 4: Boss Fight (Battleship)

This boss is a Battleship which moves back and forth across the screen. The
vessel is equipped with a series of turrets (four big and six small) and what
appears to be an AA battery. All of these weapons shoot at Jackson, who needs
to destroy them. To complicate things, an occasional Helicopter or two will
fly by and add to the ship’s firepower.

If you’ve been stock-piling grenades, now is the time to let loose!

Start by eliminating the AA battery and the small turrets at the ship’s
center. In this way, you’ll reduce the firepower directed at you, no matter
which part of the Battleship is visible. Then pick off the turrets on the ends
as they become visible.

As you destroy the final turret, the whole Battleship explodes and Jackson
exits stage right.

    4.5- Mission 5 (Final showdown at the mountain)
=============================================================================

Scene 1:

Another desolate landscape which is populated by stone formations and a couple
of brick walls.

This scene begins with Riflemen popping out of the ground. They seem to drop
an unusual amount of pick-ups. So accumulate them, particularly grenades.

Scene 2:

Jackson is closer to the brick walls, beyond which there are more brick walls
and stone formations.

Paratroopers soon begin raining down and Helicopters contribute to Jackson’s
increasing body count.

Scene 3:

Once closer to the wall, a couple of buildings are visible at the foot of some
hills. Mountains remain in the distance.

The enemies featured are Riflemen and Jet Fighters. The Riflemen either come
on-screen from the sides or emerge from the ground. Not many Jet Fighters show
up, but they may come in two at a time.


Scene 4: Boss Fight (Fortress)

If the name of the level is correct, this is the final boss. The central
structure resembles a submarine’s con tower. (Perhaps a submarine is buried in
the mountainside) Other elements include two green domed structures on each
side and five grey boxes in the foreground.

The grey boxes each rise out of the ground as their twin cannons fire at
Jackson. There are also Fighter Jets which fly across the screen while also
taking shots at your character.

Begin by taking out the cannons in the foreground. When there are two cannons
left, the green-domed structures rise to also fire at Jackson (volley of seven
shots at a time) before again receding into the ground. Dodge those shots and
continue pummeling the cannon in the foreground until they are but smouldering
ruins.

Next, pour your grenades and firepower into the green-domed structures to rid
yourself of these harassing foes. Continually strafing them left to right and
back seems to work quite well. Notice that the central tower is now firing
three-round busts at Jackson.

When the green-domed gun emplacements are shattered and useless, turn your
attention to the central tower. Concentrate your shots on the windows and once
again strafe left to right at all of them. The tower will soon start
exploding.

Jackson witnesses the final destruction of the Fortress and then struts off-
screen.

The final scene shows Jackson and Thomas (where was this guy during this whole
endeavor?) either looking at a huge explosion in the mountains (I thought this
had already occurred) or watching the sun rise or sunset.

The following text creeps onto the screen:

“The life or death battle is now at an end. With the terrorist organization
completely annihilated, peace has once again been restored to the world.

The compassionate and courageous action of the two comrades who fought to
regain freedom will never be forgotten.

The End.”

5- Enemies

The enemies aren't hard to kill and their variety is quite limited. They will
be described as they appear.

    5.1- Rifleman
=============================================================================

This is the basic enemy which travels horizontally across the screen. One
bullet with the machine gun makes him flicker away.

Its method of attack is to stop and take a shot at your character.

    5.2- Tank
=============================================================================

This tank, which is green, may be destroyed if you take enough shots at its
turret. Grenades are more expeditious. Do not waste them on it and simply
avoid its shots.
Its method of attack is to stop and take one or two shots at your character,
using its gun turret.

    5.3- Light Tank
=============================================================================

This tank, which is brown, may be destroyed if you take enough shots at the
turret. Grenades, however, make the job much easier. Do not waste them on it
and simply avoid its shots.
Its method of attack is to stop and take one or two shots at your character,
using its gun turret.

    5.4- Helicopter
=============================================================================

This enemy is like a Tank in the air. Shooting at it seems effective if you
manage to hit the rotor. It is easier to simply avoid its fire.
Its attack comprises a mid-air stop and the firing of a burst of fire (three
to five shots) before moving on.

    5.5- Jet Fighter
=============================================================================

This enemy flies out of the background and towards your character, before
stopping in mid-air to take a shot at you.
Shooting at the jet’s canopy seems effective in taking it down.

    5.6- ATV
=============================================================================

This enemy is comprised of a soldier riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in
the background. One shot is needed to take it out.
Its method of attack is to stop and take one shot at your character.

    5.7- Grenadier
=============================================================================

This guy is dressed just like the Riflemen, but he appears to be unable to
handle a firearm. Instead, his attack consists of tossing grenades which can
be shot out of the air.
One shot us all it takes to make him leave this world.

    5.8- Paratrooper
=============================================================================
These guys float down using parachutes and take shots at Jackson as they
descend. Once on the ground, they gather up their chute and run across the
background.
One hit puts a halt to their drops and scurrying around.

    5.9- Scuba Diver
=============================================================================
This enemy patrols bodies of water and surfaces to take a shot at Jackson.
Oddly enough, after the shot, the Scuba Diver appears to simply walk to the
left or right. One has to wonder how deep that body of water really is.
All it takes is one hit to make this enemy sleep with the fishes.
