effort to put them together. If you're feeling generous and want to show your
appreciation, I am gladly accepting donations. I don't know exactly what the
donations will be used for, but just know that you would definitely be helping
me make more quality FAQs! Even the smallest donation amounts are appreciated,
and are a great way to say how much you appreciate the work I do. If you do
decide you'd like to donate, please send the donations through PayPal at the

Welcome to another FAQ of mine. This one covers the SMS game Digger Chan. This
game is a relative rarity in modern gaming. After 1990, few games were actually
released for the Sega Master System, much like with any "phased-out" console.
Beyond such a point, most games are generally "homebrew", or made by a
relatively inexperienced lone person or small group thereof.
Digger Chan is such a game. It was made for a 2006 competition on the
SMS Power forums (www.smspower.org) by a user named Aypok. I know not whether
it actually won the competition or not, but, in playing it, I feel it had a
fair chance. This game relies on the age-old concept of removing impediments
through matching, to some extent, while on a limited supply of something. In
this case, that thing is milk. @_@
..
That's all I have to say on this game. Enjoy.

--------
Controls
--------
- D-Pad : Move cursors; move character
- 1 Button : Confirm choices; opt to "dig"
- 2 Button : Cancel choices; help jump to a higher ledge
- Pause/Start: N/A.
------------------
Basics of the Game
------------------
Game Goal and Start-Up:
```````````````````````
In this game, you will go through a set of levels. Their goal is the same in
each - to remove all of the blocks to get to the bottom of the level. There
are seven in all, each increasing in length and difficulty.
To begin the game, press "1" at the title screen. That's the main problem with
this game: the Pause/Start Button actually has no function, so just press "1"
to begin.
The Character:
``````````````
This section is to discuss the actions you are able to take in the game, which
are referred to throughout the rest of this document. The two actions you can
take are digging and jumping.
Digging consists of using the D-Pad and the 1 Button to remove blocks. You can
choose a block on the side of your character via the D-Pad Buttons - Up, Down,
Left, or Right - to correspond with a side of the character. If no D-Pad
Button is used, the direction is assumed to be Down. Digging is vital; more on
it later.
Jumping is a relatively simple action. It will let you ascend up one tile, so
long as you can also go right or left one tile where a block is not located.
Use the 2 Button to do this in conjunction with Left or Right on the D-Pad. So
long as the destination tile is vacant, you're okay - it doesn't matter if a
block should really block you, so long as the destination tile is empty.
Gameplay:
`````````
In each level, to progress to the next one, you need to remove blocks. You do
so by holding a direction on the D-Pad (if not, the game assumes Down) and
pressing the 1 Button. In doing so, the tile you aimed at will disappear, as
will any block of the same color next to it. You then will fall down if a block
beneath you was removed. At the point, you will receive points. For small
numbers of blocks, you will receive one point per block, though the "full"
scoring mechanics are further ahead.
There is one big thing to note about block removal, however. See those thin
blocks outlining the playfield? At times, some blocks of the exact same color
and pattern - starting in Level 3 - will pop up. These cannot be removed. That
means you can get stuck if, for example, you are too deep into a shaft that
lacks blocks. It will help you to think ahead and not always go for the big
groups of blocks.
That's really about it for progressing - remove blocks (you can remove any
number you wish at one time) to gain points. Remove the striped blocks at the
end of a level to continue onto the next one after receiving bonuses. There are
seven levels in all, each increasing in length and, to a SLIGHT extent, in
difficulty.
During this time, you really, really need to remain aware of the milk meter at
the right side of the screen. This meter is only filled when you obtain the
milk jugs (white blocks with an "M" on them) throughout a level; they also net
you 30 points. There is no full consensus I can reach on how long the meter
will last, due to the potential inaccuracy of my tests, but the results locus
around 50 seconds.
Why does milk matter, though? Well, it's your life and timer. If it runs out,
you die - simple as that. You only get three lives, or "tries", at the start,
and only get new ones with each 2,000 points you earn. Therefore, whenever you
see a milk jug, it is preferable to go right after it. The milk jugs are, in
most cases, affected by gravity, so you can try to use that to bring them to
you, or even remove blocks to "bring them along for the ride", thereby
conserving them.
End of Game:
````````````
The game will end upon the meeting of one of three conditions:
~ You turn off the console. =P
~ You lose all of your lives.
~ You finish all seven levels.
Tips:
`````
~ "Gravity shafting." A good technique to keep up speed is to make vacant
shafts in the blocks to shoot you down them. Of course, make sure they're
actually safe to go down - you don't want to get stuck! - but this can save
loads of milk in the long run.
~ "Know your surroundings." As you progress into the game, you're definitely
going to just head for the big groups for the points, and often ride them
down because they were under you. This can get you killed pretty quickly
by getting you stuck in an unknown area. If the set of blocks you're about
to remove has a block on the bottom row of the screen, it's generally not
a good idea to remove it until you go down further.
~ "Patience is a virtue." Frankly, lives can come pretty easily here. If you
find yourself stuck, it's not hard to remember the solution to your problem
(or write it down), and, if low on lives, there's more than enough blocks to
sate that problem.
~ "PLAN AHEAD!" This cannot be said enough. While this game does not pause
unless you're playing on an emulator, quick mental processing should say how
exactly to plan your route. Sure, you're always going to want to head right
for the milk jugs - that's a given - but if you get stuck in a shaft that's
three tiles high (as in Level 3), is it worth dying over? Instead, maybe you
could first remove some of the blocks next to the shaft and jump up in and
out. Think ahead. It can especially help you to video your playthroughs for
future reference or something.
~ "Point-grinding." To a point, you do pretty much just want to end the game.
That's it. However, you need lives in case you get stuck, and they appear
once every 2,000 points. This can be every three or four levels to a
speed-runner. If you see large groups of blocks beside you as you progress
through a level - generally four or more due to bonuses - you really should
get rid of them. In the long run, this can greatly boost your point totals,
and therefore your lives.
Scoring:
````````
The general scoring is as this. I went ahead and iterated it up to the level
after 100 blocks for ease of use ... not to mention you shouldn't be able to
eliminate much more than that anyways.
These are only general guidelines based on a pattern I saw - the range of the
point sets increased by one. For example, the first set's difference is 2,
the next is 3, and so on. I threw in the patterning effect after 9 ~ 14.
The use of score in this game is solely for one thing: extra lives, or "tries",
given with every 2,000 points.

Section Five: Walkthrough **CHAN_5**
=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=
This walkthrough will describe the main method to get to the goal blocks as
efficiently as possible. While I do not particularly suggest going for extra
side blocks due to the need to conserve milk, feel free to do so. This is most
easily done at the very end of the level, by the way, due to proximity to ...
well, the end.
Also, I will repeatedly refer to "gravity shafting". This is a technique, as
mentioned in the previous section, that allows you to use falling to your
advantage. Falling is faster than plain ol' digging, and therefore helps keep
up your milk reserves. However, it does lessen your chance of earning big
numbers of points, but you ARE more likely to survive with these technique.
Removing big chunks of blocks to create vertical shafts is the technique I
will call "gravity shafting".
========
Level 1:
========
- Dig straight down to a depth of 17.
- Dig left to the milk.
- Dig straight down to a depth of 24.
- Go right one space, into the gap, then dig above the milk.
- Go left two tiles and begin digging down for a bit.
- You'll grab the milk at depth 38 as you go.
- At depth 40, go to the third column and take out the blocks to the right.
- Go to the bottom of this "cross" and dig.
- Now at depth 43, go right and dig while above the milk to get it.
- Keep going to the level's end below you.
========
Level 2:
========
- Go straight down to a depth of 14.
- Dig to the right and through the massive red block set and head down.
- Dig straight down, gravity shafting as wished, to a depth of 40.
- Get the milk to the left.
- Dig at the red blocks nearby and go straight down to a depth of 50.
- Dig leftward and grab the milk.
- Go the third column and dig down as far as possible.
- Go right and dig out the center red blocks, then straight down to depth 64.
- Go right and down out the next six red blocks, then down to depth 88.
- Here, switch to the left side and dig out the red blocks.
- Go straight down to depth 97.
- Dig out the lone green block to the right.
- Get the milk.
- Dig out other blocks as desired, then go down to finish the level.
========
Level 3:
========
- Go down to depth 10.
- Dig left, down, right, and down to the shaft. At depth 14, go left.
- Dig down and get the obvious milk at depth 22.
- Continue down to depth 35.
- There are several shafts going down. Use the fourth one and head down more.
- Try staying around the right three columns as you go for milk (depth 57).
- Continue down to depth 70.
- Go left into the shaft and continue straight to depth 92.
- Dig above the milk to get it, then continue on.
- Use gravity shafting to help reach depth 120.
- Here, take out the left blocks below the milk. Head to depth 122 and stand
on the pink blocks next to it. Remove them, get the milk, and jump out and
into the third column.
- Go down to depth 134. There, go into the fifth (central) column and go down.
- At depth 146, shift left one column and keep going down to the exit.
- If you want the milk at the left, dig right, remove blue blocks by being
under them, jump onto the ledge to the right, then remove the pink blocks
under the milk.
- Dig out other blocks as desired, then go down to end the level.
========
Level 4:
========
- Go down.
- At a depth of 9, do not remove the blocks below you. Shift left a column.
- Go down to depth 15 or 16, shift left a column, and keep going down.
- Abuse gravity shafting to speed your way to depth 50.
- There, go right from the center where you likely are and dig out the milk.
- From the milk's location, dig down and slowly left with gravity shafts.
- At depth 87, go right and under the milk to release it. Get it.
- From the sixth column, continue down. Gravity shaft to depth 124.
- Dig down at the third column to grab some milk.
- Dig STRAIGHT down to depth 154.
- Go right and dig beneath the milk to reach it. You can also get the other.
- From the tile between the two, dig straight down to depth 177.
- Gravity shaft your way to the milk.
- Continue down for a bit, then gravity shaft starting around depth 185.
- Continue this. There is milk in the very center at depth 213.
- Quickly make your way from there to the extreme right.
- Dig or gravity from there down to depth 234 for milk.
- Dig straight down to find some milk at depth 243.
- Dig down/left, then right around depth 248 - the exit is around depth 250.
========
Level 5:
========
This particular level is pretty easy. All you really have to do for a fair
while is decide whether to stay on the right or left and dig down from there.
Don't bother going for unneeded blocks, though - that'll kill you.
Around depth 157, you'll be on some sparse blocks. Jump to the green ones, but
don't dig - this is faster. At depth 189, you'll see some milk. DO NOT GO FOR
IT. As Admiral Ackbar would say, "IT'S A TRAP!".
The next segment, after the large green thing, will have some milk. You can
get it (depth 180) so long as you jump back up afterwards. Dig down some more.
Later on, you'll be at a diagonally-arranged set of blocks. There, from depths
220 to 228, you'll want to shift to the far right so you'll be able to get some
milk. Continue on.
The next segment is pretty time-consuming. Gravity shafting is pretty hard to
do here, period. Just stick around the center for a milk around depth 275. It
gets pretty similar to the start beyond there for a bit, followed by a
throwback to the time-consuming segment starting around depth 375 ~ 380. This
new segment more easily allows gravity shafting. The only thing to beware of
is that, starting around depth 392, shift into the center of the area or you
can get trapped in some unescapeable shafts. Be quick, too, as there are no
more milks in this segment. The end is around depth 400.
========
Level 6:
========
- Dig straight down or gravity shaft to a depth of 18.
- Dig under the milk to the left to get it, then go down or gravity shafting.
- Around depth 37, you'll want to shift to the right 1/3 of the screen.
- At depth 44 is a milk only available to those on the right side. Dig out the
blocks from beneath it to get it, but DO NOT dig down at that spot or you'll
lose. Return to the right side and go down or gravity shaft.
- Around depth 51, shift towards the left to more easily reach a milk at
depth 53.
- Go straight down in the third column to depth 57, then go left and down to
depth 61.
- Go right and gravity shaft for a bit.
- Get the milk in the center at depth 72, then dig down and go left to another
milk at depth 75.
- Continue gravity shafting to depth 90. There, head RIGHT - avoid the milk!
- At depth 101, jump up the steps to the left, get milk, and head down.
- At depth 111, go left to the milk there.
- Dig down twice and right once, then get the next milk at depth 114.
- At depth 121, head to the center and dig down from there to reach milk.
- Return to the center and gravity shaft downward.
- At depth 153, go right and get the milk, then continue to the right and
gravity shaft downward. The left side is slightly easier.
- At depth 162, go right and down to depth 166 for the milk. Continue on.
- Stay in the left 1/3 of the screen through depth 178. There, go for the
milk in the center at depth 179.
- Shift to the right 1/3 of the screen as you go. At depth 198, this will
make it easy to get two milks. Continue gravity shafting...
- Continue this. You'll get two milks easily at depth 213. If you come from
the left side, to get the right milk, you need to dig under it.
- Continue on. Around depth 235, try adjusting to the left 1/3 of the area
so you can dig rightward at depth 244 for the milk to the right.
- Quickly head to the right 1/3 of the screen to get another milk at depth 249
in a similar manner, but whilst heading left.
- Continue gravity shafting down. Around depth 260 ~ 265, head to the left 1/3
to more easily reach the milk at depth 274 - you'll need to jump up to it,
and it IS possible.
- Go back to where you landed from there and jump right to the milk on depth
277.
- Dig down three times and jump up those ledges to the right-side milk at
depth 280.
- Gravity shaft downward and left. Stay on the left side as you approach
depth 304. There, you can easily reach a milk by digging beneath it.
- Gravity shaft down and right now. Stay along the right side and you'll be
able to dig beneath a milk in the center, retrieving it at depth 328.
- Stay towards the center of the screen through depth 343. There, go left and
take the red block to the left on depth 345. Then jump up to the milk and
continue on.
- Gravity shaft along the center through depth 363, then shift leftward for a
milk.
- Head down for a milk at depth 370.
- Continue gravity shafting along the center to depth 391. There, make some
block disappear to the right, jump at the milk, and gravity shaft here.
- The exit is not much further down and left - it is around depth 400.
========
Level 7:
========
- Dig straight down to depth 17.
- Shift to the right and begin digging downward.
- At depth 37, 41, and 48, ignore the milk in the pit - that's death. You can
get a milk by digging above the one on the right at depth 48.
- Continue down. Ignore the milk visible at depth 51; go left and dig down.
- At depth 58, go above the milk and dig down to it. Continue on.
- Dig down/gravity shaft to depth 74. Head along the right fork. You get milk
as you continue.
- Dig some more. At depth 99, and for a bit more, jump to only visible, safe
blocks. Depth 117 seems to have none - just go left or right.
- Head down and keep digging.
- Gravity shaft down to depth 150 or so, then shift towards the visible milk.
- Continue gravity shafting along the center.
- At depth 165, shift to the right. Dig beneath the milk to get it, and go on.
- On depth 184, dig on the yellow block, then go right. Head left and take the
two milks, then continue down.
- Continue along the blatant, easy path through depth 252, where you get milk.
- Dig straight downward, then shift left to dig above depth 265's milk.
- Continue straight down for a milk. Keep going...
- At depth 303, shift to the left side and gravity shaft downward.
- Stay along the left 1/3 or so to reach a milk at depth 320 by digging
beneath it.
- Stay along the right side now. Avoid falling into the pits that can be seen
as you approach.
- Milk will be yours at depth 348 or so. Keep going...
- At depth 357, dig left and down into the third (center) shaft.
- Gravity shaft downward along the right half of the field for milk at a depth
of 384.
- Stay along the right side and keep gravity shafting. Milk is at depth 403.
And, no, those above it are solely for decoration. =/
- Continue along to the right side in the next area, then down towards the
center after the impassable block on the first set is passed. Milk will be
easily found at depth 414.
- Go to the right and gravity shaft down to depth 426. Removing the big chunk
of blocks makes some milk fall down to you.
- Continue gravity shafting along the center/right side. At depth 442, go into
the tunnel.
- At depth 456, go left before digging. Use the left tunnel, too.
- Go down and right to milk in the center at depth 468.
- Gravity shaft along the right side and dig on the orange block from depth
481.
- Here, go onto the orange block on the left, then the milk, then down.
- Continue along to depth 511. There, dig in the center of the blocks below
and continue digging, grabbing milk on the way.
- Dig on downward from there. The exit is around depth 544.
