1- Introduction
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
This game, made for the Sega Master System in 1994, was manufactured and sold
under license from Les Editions Albert Rene. Asterix and the Great Rescue was
obviously made to be distributed in Europe, since there are five language
options.
Prior to writing this FAQ, I had no knowledge of this game. Furthermore, no
instruction booklet was available to me for the writing of this FAQ. So I
guess that we’ll discover how this works together. As such, objects and
characters will be identified as they appear on the screen.
On to the game...
The first thing that is required is to choose a language for gameplay. The
options are English, French, Dutch, Spanish and Italian. For obvious reasons,
I selected English.
This brings us to the intro:
“The year is 50 BC. Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans. Well, not
entirely...One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the
invaders. And life is not easy for the Roman legionnaires who garrison the
fortified camps of Totorum, Aquarium, Laudanum and Compendium...”
That is the extent of the information available to us at the beginning of the
game. The start screen follows and pressing X then brings up the options
screen. The options are indicated below (use the D-pad to toggle between
options):
- Difficulty: There are three possibilities - Easy, Normal or Hard
- Test BGM: This option permits the testing of different background music.
There are 14 different tracks, which pretty much sound like slight
variations of each other. Pressing X permits you to listen to them.
- Test SFX: There are 27 distinct sound effects that can be sampled.
Pressing X permits you to listen to them. Some of these effects seemed
too subtle to hear.
- Music: The choices are ON or OFF
- SFX: The choices are ON or OFF
- Password: This option allows you to enter a five digit password which
permits you to pick up at specific points in the game. Press X to have
access for changing the numbers (pressing up or down on the D-pad).
Pressing left or right toggles between digits. Once done, press X to
exit the input function.
- Exit: Press X to begin playing.

2- Display
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The top left portion of the screen contains the following information:
- Asterix or Obelix icon with a number indicating how many lives you have
left. Although you can have 10 lives or more, 9 is the maximum that can
be displayed.
- Life bar: A vertical green bar which is to the immediate left of your
character icon. The bar will gradually turn red as you take damage. A
completely red bar results in a lost life.
- Item box: The item box indicates which item is currently active. Toggle
between the items by crouching and pressing A. The only available items
are potions which come in four varieties: bombs (explosion), temporary
platform (cloud), vine (sparkling Asterix) and flying (shoes on a
cloud). Obelix cannot use any items, so the item box is replaced by a
black and red pattern.
The rest of the screen is devoted to the action.

=============================================================================
3.1- Controls
=============================================================================
Since I ran the game on an emulator, I’ve no information for the Sega Master
System control buttons. Instead, I used a PC gamepad. The gamepad
configuration was as follows:
DIRECTION PAD:
During game play, pressing left or right moves the character in that
direction.
Pressing DOWN by itself makes Asterix crouch. Asterix can move left or right
while crouched. Obelix cannot crouch.
Pressing UP and X alternates between Asterix and Obelix.
SELECT:
Not used.
START:
Pauses and un-pauses the game.
A BUTTON:
In the game, this button is used to jump.
As Obelix, jumping and pressing DOWN performs a butt-smash, which can break
blocks.
As Asterix, pressing A while crouched scrolls through the items.
Obelix does not use items.
X BUTTON:
In the game, this button is used to punch.
As Asterix, holding down the X button uses the item appearing in the square at
the top left of the screen.
As Obelix, holding down the X button performs a whirling punch which can break
blocks.
=============================================================================
3.2- Weapons and Items
Your only weapons are your fists.
Considering this, you will obviously need an array of items to defeat the
Romans and perform the great rescue of whoever is supposed to have been
kidnapped. (Nothing in the opening sequence reveals who Asterix and Obelix are
supposed to be rescuing.)
Potions: These are your main weapons and items. They are found in blue bottles
that have a cloud coming out the top. Potions come in five varieties. Except
for the Magic potion, each bottle picked up can provide between 1 and 3 uses
of a specific potion. Again, except for the Magic potion, the maximum number
of uses for any potion that can be carried at once is 3.
- Bomb: This is an explosive device. When thrown, the bomb appears as a
small red ball. Its explosion is depicted as a few stars (wow, not). It
can be used to eliminate enemies, break blocks or just knock stuff down.
- Cloud: This is a potion which creates a temporary platform which appears
to be made of a solid cloud. The platform disappears a few seconds after
your having stepped on it. When thrown, it appears as a small grey
sphere.
- Flying: This is a potion that permits Asterix to fly for about 10
seconds. Using the D-pad permits you to direct him. If no direction is
pressed, Asterix will simply slowly fall down to the nearest platform.
Flying can be canceled by performing an attack or a jump. Bumping into
objects or enemies can also negate the effect.
- Vine: Covers Asterix in vines. This is useful for passing through Ghost
Legionnaires. The effect lasts for about five seconds or until you
perform either an attack or a jump.
- Magic: Picking up the Magic potion ends the level. Asterix rises through
the air and flaps his feet. Obviously, you cannot accumulate Magic
potions and there is only one per level.
Coins: These are worth 50 points each.
Bag of gold: This is worth 100 points. I do not understand that it is only
worth twice as much as a coin. One would think that the bag would contain much
more than two coins.
Food: Grabbing this restores about half of your character’s energy.
Cup: This item contains a beverage that restores about half your energy.
Heart: Grabbing this gives you a one-up.
=============================================================================
3.3- Item Pick-ups
=============================================================================
As the characters travel through the levels, they fight enemies and encounter
various pick-ups scattered throughout.
Invincibility: This pick-up appears as a red bomb with the word “MEGA” on it.
The invincibility lasts for about 15 seconds.
Potion: This is a blue bottle with smoke rings escaping from its top. The type
of potion contained can be bomb, cloud (temporary platforms), flying or vine
(ghost immunity). The number of uses acquired varies from one to three per
bottle.
Magic potion: This is a blue bottle that looks like the others but contains a
shot of magic potion which sends you flying and ends the level.
Food: This looks like a hot roasted chicken on a platter.
Cup: It looks like a golden chalice with a greenish froth on top. One wonders
what the Gauls are drinking in this game...
One-up: This is a big red heart.
Coin: A spinning gold-colored disc.
Bag of gold: This looks like a white bag with a bit of gold poking from the
top.

4- Walkthrough
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Onto the walkthrough.
My plan is to get you through these levels as quickly and efficiently as
possible. I do not know if this game has any side quests or whatnot, but I am
not worrying about getting them done.
Also, I appreciate that there is no time limit in this game. It is a great
help since there is quite a bit of backtracking and being patient is a
valuable asset when playing some levels.
=============================================================================
4.1- Level 1-1 (Password 11111)
=============================================================================
Asterix appears on a brown ledge that slopes to the right. Before going in
that direction, let’s try the left...
Whoa! Maybe Asterix is mad for having to perform a rescue, cause he looks like
he is stomping around. He walks as if he is crushing bugs with every step he
takes. Let’s try Obelix. Mmmm, not as entertaining. He seems to be bobbing his
head with each step. Or maybe he is just agreeing with something going on in
his head.
Anyway, continue left and encounter a Legionnaire. He has a very specific
patrol area. Knock him out when he reaches the end of his round.
Whoa, again! Did you see that punch? Asterix is the Bruce Lee of his era with
those lightning fast strikes! Obelix’s punches do not look as fast, but he
isn’t a slouch either.
Back to the game. Keep going left and grab the key. Now go right, down the
slope and encounter another Legionnaire. Knock him out and move up the next
incline to a door. Enter the door and fall down the tower. From the tower
ledge, drop straight down and go left. While avoiding the columns of fire,
jump over the four gaps and reach a couple of steps. Climb these and push
through the wall to reach a secret area. You will find food, a coin and
invincibility.
By the way, if you ignore Asterix for a while, as I did while timing the
duration of the invincibility, he takes off his winged helmet and polishes it.
For his part, Obelix just shakes his head at you. Nice touch.
Return to the steps and jump to the upper right. Beware the fire column as you
go right until you reach a blue bottle from which smoke rings are escaping.
This is a bomb. Take it.
Here is a bit of a trick. Go left, knock out the Legionnaire and hop up the
platforms to reach the top, where you obtained the key. Go back through the
tower, past the fire columns and back to the spot where you found the bomb.
Aha! Another one has appeared. Repeat this circuit to max out your bombs (3).
The great thing about this is that the enemies do not regenerate in this game.
So you are just dealing with the obstacles. Plus, it helped me discover that
if I push to the left while falling through the tower, Asterix comes out onto
a side ledge where he can get three coins.
It must be noted that thin ledges can be jumped through (from under to top),
whereas this does not work for thicker ledges.
Once you’ve maxed out your bombs (or not), move back to beneath the tower and
proceed right. Hop up onto the red/yellow block and jump over the fire column
to the right. Beware the rolling boulder as you land on the brown ledge. Hop
over it and continue over two more gaps with fire columns. Grab the coins as
you go down the slope.
These next red/yellow blocks do not stay put like the last one did. They will
fall into the fire as you touch them, so hurry up these two blocks to get onto
the next ledge. Jump across the gap to get a key and a bomb potion. Go back to
the gap and jump up to the upper right ledge to get some coins. Turn around,
jump the gap to the left and knock out the Legionnaire. Continue left, drop
down to a lower ledge and jump over the fire columns.
Make your way up the red/yellow blocks to reach a higher ledge. You encounter
your first Centurion a little further to the right. Because Asterix cannot
punch while he is in mid-air, you need to stand right on the edge of the ledge
(you need to be hanging off to the left) and wait for the Centurion to arrive.
When he stops right in front of Asterix, quickly punch him three times to
knock him out. If you wait, the Centurion will pull out a dagger which blocks
your attacks.
Once past the Centurion, move to the right until you drop down onto a lower
ledge and eventually encounter a Legionnaire. Knock him out and go up a step
to enter the tower. When you reach the bottom, go left (through the back wall)
to collect some coins before going right and exiting the tower.
Jump up two ledges to the upper right and reach a blue column. Change into
Obelix (press UP and X) and push the column to the right, against the wall.
Turn back into Asterix and jump up to the ledge with a small passage. Crouch
and move through the passage (Ugh! What is that? Asterix looks like a crab
disguised as a Gaul! Or like he is a possessed creature out of the Exorcist!).
Drop off to the right and go down a step to grab the Magic potion which makes
Asterix fly off. This ends the level.
=============================================================================
4.2- Level 1-2
=============================================================================
This seems to be a water level. However, Asterix must have rocks in his shoes
because he cannot swim. Furthermore, there isn’t even a buoyant effect from
being in water. So the background is just cosmetic. It has no effect on the
mechanics of the game.
Walk to the right, drop off the platform and continue right. Pass below the
spotted octopus and keep going right until you hit a wall. Jump on a ledge to
the upper left to get some coins. Go back to the octopus and use it as an
elevator to reach a ledge on the upper right. Jump onto the green columns,
change into Obelix and push the blue column out of your way.
Pass behind the thin column and drop down to the right. Walk to the next thin
column and spot a blue column behind it. Change into Obelix, and push the
column to the right. Continue right and drop to the seabed.
Go left and beware the seahorse (it may be concealed by a column) as you reach
a small column. Climb it and jump up to get some food. Next, jump to the
upper-right on a platform. Jump the gap to the right and pass the column to
grab a potion which gives you bombs. Jump up to reach the platform above and
go around again to max out your bombs.
(I have noticed that it is quite easy to accidently toss a bomb while
performing another action. In order to avoid this, I have gotten into the
habit of changing my active item to something which has a “0”, so no items are
wasted.)
Again, reach the platform above and jump to the right onto an octopus. Almost
immediately jump up to grab the four coins and fall to the right. This avoids
your getting crushed on the spikes.
Back on the seabed, move right until you hit a column. Jump up onto an upper-
left platform and grab the three coins that are floating there. Return to the
seabed and go left and wait for an octopus that will come down on the right of
the statue. Jump on the octopus and ride it up.
Jump off to the right and knock out a seahorse. Walk up the slopes until a
small column falls in front of Asterix and blocks the path. Turn into Obelix
to push it out of the way. Turn back into Asterix and drop down to the right,
avoiding the octopus. Go left until you path is obstructed by two blocks.
Throw a bomb at them and continue in that direction and drop down. Jump the
gaps to the right until you reach a red block that is jutting out of the
ground. It appears to be a switch. Step on it and continue right to get four
coins. Return to the left and, as you jump the gap, use an invisible platform
to reach the platform beneath the octopus. Crouch down and walk through the
narrow space.
Use the octopus to reach the upper right platform. Go right and use a red/
yellow platform to land on an even higher platform. Keep right and knock out
two of the three Seahorses you encounter as Asterix zig-zags down the
platforms to reach the seabed. Drink the Magic potion and end the level.
=============================================================================
4.3- Level 1-3
=============================================================================
This level appears to be within a huge building.
First of all, go left and jump the gap to get a key. Also, pick up a bomb
potion (Don’t forget to move to the right, across the gap, and come back a
couple of times to max out your bombs). Hop over the wall and drop down to the
lower level. Go right while avoiding the spikes to drop down next to a tower.
Continue right, through the tower and to the edge of the platform. Notice the
smaller platform...It will fall after Asterix touches it. Hop across the
smaller platforms to reach a brick platform. Beware the flaming torches.
Keep going right and grab the coins as you hop up the two sickles (the blade
portion is harmful) before reaching a wooden beam which leads to a potion.
This one is for temporary platforms (cloud). Move back and forth to max out at
3 (sigh!). By the way, pushing through the wall on the right leads you to five
coins. Return to the tower when finished.
Walk to the left, through the tower. Jump onto the brick ledge and walk under
the spiked chandelier. Throw a cloud potion and use the temporary platform to
reach the blue platform on the left. Grab the coins and the potion (bomb).
Return to the tower.
From here, you may return to the extreme right to replenish your stock of
cloud potions. (I did so and noticed that the information at the upper left of
the screen sometimes winds up behind certain elements of the action screen,
such as towers. This may present a problem when you are trying to select an
item)
Return to the tower. Get in and jump up to travel to the top. Going down the
steps to the left nets you three coins and brings Asterix back to the level’s
starting point.
Back to the top of the steps, jump to the upper left platform. Go left to pick
up some food, a bag of gold and a couple of coins. Return to the tower, walk
through to the right – using the key to open the door. (You might fall to the
bottom. Just jump back up to the top, while pushing right.)
As you exit the tower, smack the Legionnaire that is politely waiting for you.
Continue zig-zagging down the ledges, while keeping an eye out for spikes and
another pitiful Legionnaire. As you reach the bottom, notice the MEGA icon
(invincibility). Do not get it just yet. Instead, throw a bomb to break the
blocks and THEN grab the invincibility.
Go right and jump onto the sickle platform and then over two spike pits. A Bat
flies over the second pit, but is harmless due to the invincibility. Go up the
steps. The Bat is most likely on its way back when you reach the top. Slap it
down and jump to the upper left.
Pass beneath the spiked chandelier and get past two molten steel cauldrons.
Change to Obelix to push the short column to the left and grab the key. Change
back to Asterix. Get on top of the column and jump up to the left. Next, jump
the gap and beware the spikes as you go right and grab a potion (bomb) and a
coin. Return to the spiked chandelier.
Past the chandelier, jump the gap to the right and reach a wall of blocks.
Throw a bomb to break the blocks and move past them to climb up the steps and
knock out a Legionnaire. Drop down to the right and follow the path, past the
spikes and to another tower.
Enter the tower and fall to the bottom. Go left, walk on a switch and follow
the path through the left wall to pick up a one-up heart and six coins. Return
to the tower.
Walk to the right, through the tower and past the molten steel to reach a high
wall. Throw a cloud potion to create a platform halfway up the wall and use it
to reach the top. Continue right to grab the Magic potion and end the level.
=============================================================================
4.4- Level 1-4
This level appears to be outside, probably on the building of the previous
level.
Jump up to the left and use the spring to reach an upper right platform where
there are six coins. Return to the level’s starting point and go right. You
encounter a rotund Legionnaire that must quickly be knocked out by Asterix. If
you hesitate, his punches only stop the enemy in his tracks. You can also
change into Obelix and knock out whatever teeth are left in that Legionnaire’s
mouth. Proceed right and knock a Bat out of the air. Continue right.
Change into Asterix and make your way through the low passage. Past this, jump
on top of the passage, go left and jump to get six more coins. Change into
Obelix and push the blue column to the right and use it to reach the upper
right ledge. Jump up to the next ledge and dispatch another Portly
Legionnaire. Keep going right and drop down to step on a switch. Return to
where you exited the low passage.
Change into Asterix and go right. See that wheel of cheese on its side? That’s
an open wooden door. Go through it and drop down. First, go down to the left
and stock up on bombs. Now, go all the way to the right, change into Obelix
and push the boulder down the slope. Follow it down and change into Asterix.
Look at that! Asterix can walk right through that boulder! Oh, but he can
stand on it to reach the upper left platform! (Yeah, I’m sold on this one.)
Anyway, don’t get jittery as you walk to the left while there are arrows
flying above your head. Drop down to the left and proceed down the steps until
you reach a ledge above bubbling lava. Use the red/yellow platform to get
across the lava. Change into Obelix and push the blue column to the left. Jump
onto the column to reach the upper left and step on a switch that looks like a
yellow half sphere. Return to the lava and cross it.
Change into Asterix and go right, through the narrow passage. Drop down to the
bottom. This area has rising and falling lava lakes – time your actions
accordingly. Jump to the upper left ledge and move to its edge. Drop down and
go left to reach a ledge with a spring. Use the spring to get to an upper
right ledge and some coins. Jump to an upper left ledge to get a flying
potion. Stock up on these (I know, only 3 again!) and return to the right to
drop to the bottom of the shaft once more.
Walk to the right and step down to continue until you can reach the ledge with
the six coins. Drop down and continue right to get a bomb and a one-up heart
located on the upper right ledge. Return to the bottom of the shaft. Use a
flying potion to go back to the top of the shaft and enter the area to the
left.
Fly through an opening in the right wall and reach the upper right platform.
Grab the food and drop down to the left and walk right. Jump up to a ledge to
reach a vine potion. The lava makes stocking up (3, of course) on these a
little trickier. That done, drop down and continue right to hop onto the next
ledge. Crouch and scoot through the narrow passage to proceed right and drop
down to the bottom. You encounter a Ghost Legionnaire. Your punches are
ineffective against it. Use a vine potion to get by him.
Once past the ghost, use the spring to get three coins and reach a platform
with another spring. Using this one provides you with four more coins and
access to the upper left platform. Proceed left and drop down to reach a blue
column. Change into Obelix and push it to the far left. The potion to the
upper left yields a bomb. From there, jump to the upper-right and climb the
steps.
Beware the rolling boulder as you climb the first slope and the Legionnaire on
the second slope. Continue left and crouch through two narrow passages which
lead to a wall of blocks. Throw a bomb to destroy the blocks and continue
downwards. Step on the yellow switch at the bottom left and return to the top
of the screen.
You cannot jump to the upper right ledge. Use a flying potion and continue
right to get the Magic potion and end the level.
=============================================================================
4.5- Level 1-5
=============================================================================
Ouch! What kind of décor is that? My eyes are severely aching from the pink
and blue combination! Let’s hope that this is a relatively short level...
Take a couple of steps to the right and observe the small fire balls which
fall upon the ground. As these hit the ground, they provoke the spread of a
couple of flames in opposite directions. The good news is that they do not
travel very far. Keep that and the various columns of flame in mind as you
continue right.
Drop down just to the left of the first column and move to the left, beneath
the starting platform. Get all the way left to find a treasure trove of pick-
ups. There are two foods, a cup and a MEGA. Grab them all and return to the
first flame column. Jump to the upper right ledge and use the invincibility to
run through a Portly Legionnaire, two fire-spewing tubes, a falling fireball
and a flame column. At the extreme right, you will find another food and a
flying potion. Stock up and return to where you encountered the Portly
Legionnaire.
Get past the small flame column and drop down to the right of the large flame
column. Go right and knock out a Legionnaire. Keep right until you reach
fireballs which follow a circular path. Get between them and jump up to get a
bomb. Stock up on this item and continue right. Be prepared to dodge a lot of
flame columns as you zig-zag your way down the next ledges to a T
intersection. Go left to grab some coins and then proceed right to jump onto
an upper right platform. Before dropping down the shaft, notice that there are
some fire projectiles going across its width. Time your drop accordingly.
You encounter more flame columns as you move to the left and reach a Portly
Legionnaire that can be knocked out with repeated punches. Keep to the left,
while avoiding more fire hazards and knocking out a Legionnaire, until the
edge of the ledge. Use the flying potion to make your way across the wide gap.
Grab the magic potion to end the level.
=============================================================================
4.6- Level 1-6 Boss Fight
=============================================================================
This level seems to be near the Gaul village and involves a boss fight
with...Cacofonix? If this guy were so dangerous, he would not end up tied and
gagged at the end of every adventure in the books.
The setup is simple. Cacofonix is playing his lute on a platform above
Asterix. The false notes generated by the lute float down to the ground. These
notes are harmful to Asterix and must be avoided. Our hero has the task,
however, to knock out the bard by using bombs which are so generously provided
by a Gaul valet who walks across the screen every now and then.
Now, Asterix can throw bombs at Cacofonix from the ground, however it is
uncertain whether you are really dealing damage to the failed musician. It
would also help if the game made the bum flash or something else that would
indicate a hit.
I decided to use the valet’s potion cushion as a platform. This permits
Asterix to throw bombs at Cacofonix’s chest or back. It is a little tricky to
time and jumping too high might cause damage from the moving Cacofonix.
Because there is no hit indication, it is not possible to specify how many
bomb hits are necessary to disable that guy’s hands for good. Just keep
throwing those explosives and dodging those notes and the poor excuse for a
boss will eventually fall off the platform.
When this happens grab the next potion brought by the valet. This is a Magic
potion which ends the level.
=============================================================================
4.7- Level 2-1 (Password 40732)
=============================================================================
This level starts in what appears to be a peaceful field. Let’s hope it lasts.
Go right and encounter what looks like a small kangaroo crossed with a rabbit.
Neither Asterix nor Obelix are able to knock out the rabbit. So just jump over
it and drop down to the right, where a monolith blocks the way. Beware a
Legionnaire Archer that pops up and shoots arrows as you go left. Rush past
him as he sinks back into the ground. You can’t even wait the Archer out and
smack him in the back of the head in a quest for vengeance. He is too low to
the ground. Oh, well. Carry on.
Drop down and do not fall off the left edge of the lower platform – wooden
spikes are waiting below. Go right and deal with another Archer. Upon reaching
the right edge, you can spot a potion below. Aim for it as you drop down and
claim your cloud potion. From here on in, I will assume that you will stock up
on any available potions. Avoid the next Archer as you proceed left. Reach the
next monolith and get to the top platform in order to reach the upper left
ledge. Grab the bomb potion.
Return to the monolith on the right and toss a cloud potion. Use the cloud to
get over the monolith and make your way past an Archer to reach the bottom of
the screen.
Knock out the Legionnaire you encounter and walk up the wooden ramp until your
path is blocked by a wooden spike. Beware the Archers that are lurking in the
area as you jump to the upper left ledge and scoot beneath the wooden spikes.
Climb up to the first spiked platform and toss a bomb at the Legionnaire
standing guard at the edge. Jump the gap.
Drop down on the wooden ramp, grab the two coins to the left and then proceed
right. Follow this path past two Archers, a Legionnaire and down a couple of
steps before reaching a short monolith. Jump over this obstacle and avoid
arrows as you scoot under some wooden spikes to reach another monolith.
Use the cloud platform to reach a series of monoliths. Asterix and Obelix do
not perform small jumps. As such, the trick to getting past these monoliths
without hitting the spikes is to jump from the lowest one to the third, then
retreat to the second before jumping to the highest. Get past the spiked
bridge and continue down to the lowest platform. Navigate the two spiked
bridges and continue right to grab a bag of gold. Go a couple of steps further
right and knock out the Legionnaire. Go across a last spiked bridge, from
which you may have to jump to clear the end, to reach a catapult.
This particular war engine requires some strategy to use. See that pink-red
part? That is the launching device. If Asterix jumps on top of it, he will be
launched into the spikes above. Instead, walk past the device and come at it
from the right. Hop up right next to the launcher and press left to touch it
so as to be propelled in an arc that ends against a wooden wall. You also get
a bunch of coins as you fall to the ground. (Ironic, isn’t it? You barely
graze a spike and take damage, but being catapulted into a solid wall doesn’t
inflict a single scratch...)
Stand at the edge of the platform and toss a bomb to break the wall of blocks.
Go past the spike and make your way to the lower right where there is a bag of
gold and a golden cup. Next, jump up to the top platform and get the Magic
potion to end the level.
=============================================================================
4.8– Level 2-2
=============================================================================
The level begins with Asterix standing in front of a stepped structure on
wheels. Hmmm...
Let’s climb those steps. Oh goody! More Archers and spikes! And oh, look!
Someone had the bright idea of dropping a plate of food in an unreachable
area! Ignore that pick-up and jump across the spikes using the cloud platform.
Scoot under two sets of spikes as you reach the ground and continue right.
Collect the three coins and ascend the wooden ramp.
As you reach the top, turn into Obelix and push the blue column to the right.
Turn back into Asterix, jump onto the platform and drop through the gap.
Follow the path, go down the steps and knock out the Legionnaire at the
bottom. Continue left to cross a spiked wooden bridge that necessitates that
you jump to the cloud platform and then jump again to reach the wooden post.
Cross another spiked wooden bridge and change into Obelix to push a blue
column to the left.
Turn back into Asterix and jump onto the small platform. Drop down to the left
to grab the invincibility (MEGA) and get past the Rabbit and Centurion.
Proceed right and cross two spiked wooden bridges, as well as knock out a Fish
and another Centurion. Do not slow down as you jump the gap and cross another
spiked wooden bridge while avoiding Frogs. Jump another couple of gaps to
reach a cloud potion. Beware the Archer as you place a cloud platform against
the monolith. Use the cloud to get to the upper-left platform and jump right
to grab the bag of gold. Continue left by jumping two gaps and reaching a
catapult. If you crouch and scoot beneath the catapult’s launcher and
subsequent spikes, you get a one-up heart.
Return to the catapult and get launched onto the upper right platform while
grabbing a bunch of coins. Keep right and pick up three more coins before
jumping up thrice to reach the top platform and a wooden bridge (Beware the
Archer on the first platform). Go left and knock out the Portly Legionnaire.
Continue left, up the wooden slope and steps to get another bag of gold.
Return to where you knocked out the Legionnaire and use a cloud potion to
create a platform. Use this cloud to jump up and reach the top platform. Grab
the Magic potion and end the level.
=============================================================================
4.9– Level 2-3
=============================================================================
This level looks dark and foreboding. The sky is filled with dark clouds and
the platforms are rock formations.
Start by going right and through a tent before knocking out a Centurion. Drop
down to the right and go left to traverse another tent. Use the cloud to get
across the spike pit. Go through the next tent and be prepared to knock out a
Bat that swoops down. Continue left and turn into Obelix before dropping down.
Quickly turn around and knock out a Centurion before proceeding right to a
block. Do Obelix’s spinning punch to break the block. Change into Asterix and
continue right to drop down and go left. When you reach the edge, you can
either avoid the Centurion by letting him pass to the left before dropping
down and going right, or turn into Obelix to knock him out. Me, I knocked him
out. Drop to the bottom and beware the worm that is moving along the floor.
Avoid the worm and go left to get a cloud potion. Go all the way right, to the
pulley system. Jump on the red step and you are pulled to the top.
Leave the pulley and go to the tent. Jump on its roof and use the spring to
reach a sickle on the upper left ledge. Next, use the same spring to go
straight up and reach a passage that goes right – there is a coin and a one-up
heart at its end. Back track a little to get on top of the passage and throw a
cloud potion against the right wall. Use the cloud to get over the wall and
then drop down, next to a pulley system. (The aforementioned path avoids your
having to cross a spike pit using two red/yellow platforms.)
Go up the pulley and proceed right, dropping to a lower platform beneath a
bird and then lower to another platform before going left. Knock out a Bat and
reach the edge to jump down, while grabbing the coins along the left wall. Go
right and be prepared to knock out another Bat, before dropping down onto a
tent. Go left to get a bag of gold and return right, past the tent and the
spring to drop down.
Beware a Rat running along the floor as you toss a cloud potion against the
right wall. Use the cloud to reach the upper right ledge and grab the coins.
Return to the floor and avoid the Rat as you go left. Reach the edge and use
the cloud to jump the gap. Continue left and up a step to grab the Magic
potion that ends the level.
=============================================================================
4.10– Level 2-4
=============================================================================
This level looks to be outside a Roman camp. The platforms are constructed of
stone blocks and there appears to be a lake of fire beneath it all.
Start by going right and knocking out a Legionnaire, before jumping up onto a
platform. Continue ascending platforms until you reach a bomb potion. Go
right, until you reach the edge of the lowest platform.
Wait until the flame columns subside before jumping onto the spinning shield
and then onto the next platform. Jump another gap to reach a catapult. Walk
into the launcher to get the invincibility and be propelled to the upper
right.
Walk right and pass the cauldrons by scaling them and getting across their
tops by waiting for the flames to subside (or simply race past them if you are
still invincible). Past the cauldrons, jump onto the horizontal rods to avoid
the flames rising through the floor. Knock out a Portly Legionnaire and jump
to the top rod. Go right to get a cloud potion. Go left.
Use spinning shields to jump the next gaps and reach a line of vertical
swords. Use a cloud potion to pass these swords. Clouds are already present
for the next lines of swords. Get by them to reach more flaming cauldrons that
are easily passed with a little patience.
Next, use the horizontal rods to reach the top, where you can knock out a
Legionnaire and get some food. Drop down one rod and use Obelix to push the
upright shield to the right. Turn into Asterix and use the shield as a
platform to jump the gap to the right.
Time your use of the catapult with the column of flame emanating from the
cauldron. Once you’ve landed on the next platform, go left to grab three coins
and then go right to reach a huge Roman helmet. Scoot under the helmet and
jump two gaps to reach a Legionnaire. Knock him out and pass another helmet
before reaching more horizontal rods. Reach the top left rod to get food and
four coins – knock out a Portly Legionnaire along the way. That done, drop
down to the lowest rod in order to reach the Magic potion and end the level.
=============================================================================
4.11– Level 2-5
=============================================================================
This level still appears to be outside the Roman camp. However, you are on the
ground.
Start by going right. Jump up the wooden walkway and knock out the
Legionnaire. Return to the ground and drop down to the right. Press left as
you fall, so as to avoid hitting the spring and being propelled up onto the
walkway. (If you have not knocked out the Legionnaire, you are likely to be
injured as you are thrown upwards by the spring.)
Once below ground level, go left and get the food and coins as you drop down
to the bottom. Go right and grab the potions (bomb and cloud). Then use a
cloud potion to return to the platform with the spring. (You cannot,
unfortunately, make a cloud platform and leave the area to get another potion
to replace it. The platform will disappear when off screen.)
Use the spring to return onto the wooden walkway. Once at the top, go right
and knock out the Portly Legionnaire. Proceed right, to the edge. Drop down to
the red/yellow platform that is moving vertically. As it goes down, jump left
to land on another red/yellow platform. Quickly jump off to the left as it
drops onto the spikes. You reach an area with a flying potion and a one-up
heart.
Use the flying potion to get the coins in the upper left corner and then go
right to pass the spikes and land onto a log platform past a red/yellow
platform to the right of the moving one. Jump over the spikes to the right and
lend next to a walkway. Go left, knock out a Legionnaire and get food plus a
cloud potion. Return right and climb the wooden walkway.
Knock out the Legionnaire and jump as far to the right as possible (this
avoids what looks like a pink dog that is waiting at the bottom). Get to the
laundry water and jump onto a bubble. Ride it to reach the clothesline. Cross
the clothesline and use another bubble to get to an upper right platform. Use
another bubble to get to a higher platform, with a dog running along it. Knock
out the dog and use a cloud potion to reach the next clothesline. Knock out
the Legionnaire and get the coins as you drop to the right.
Drop down to the left. See that green bump in the ground? If you stand on it,
a green mushroom sprouts and propels you up onto the clothesline. Drop down
into the hole and knock out the Bat that comes at you. Go right and change
into Obelix to push the boulder against the left wall. Turn back into Asterix
and jump onto the platform. Proceed left and go down the steps. Knock out the
Bat before using the cloud to cross the gap.
Crouch and scoot through the narrow passage (grab the coins on the way). Knock
out a bat as you exit the passage and continue left to reach a blue column.
Change into Obelix and push the column to the left wall. Change into Asterix
and use the column to reach the upper left platform. Jump across the falling
platforms and reach a platform where you encounter another narrow passage.
Knock out a Bat as you exit the passage and go through another narrow passage
in order to reach the Magic potion that ends the level.
=============================================================================
4.12– Level 2-6 Boss Fight
=============================================================================
This level is a boss fight and the boss is...the Roman camp! The idea here is
to punch the boulders that are coming over the walls back into the camp.
Sounds simple, but the timing is tricky. You need to stand a little to the
left or right of the boulder’s trajectory and punch it right before it is at
the height of Asterix’s head.
If you miss, the boulder damages Asterix by hitting him directly. Unreturned
boulders will also hit the ground and fragment into four pieces. These pieces
scatter and contact with them causes damage.
The camp’s walls gradually deteriorate as the boulders are sent back to strike
it. After nine hits (I think), a white flag comes up and the camp surrenders.
=============================================================================
4.13– Level 3-1 (Password 23554)
=============================================================================
It looks like we’re in an over-sized garden.
Go left and use the blue flower head to reach the upper right platform – the
flower head falls. Reach the top platform and go right across the flowers to
reach a bomb potion. Return to the first upper right platform.
Drop down to the left and use the clouds to reach the next series of platforms
(beware the falling spears). Take out the Legionnaire with a punch thrown from
the very edge of the platform. Make your way to the top platform, picking up
coins on the way. Go right, across the blue flowers and knock out the Spear
Thrower. Gab the coins on the various branches and return to the top platform.
Jump the gap to the small platform and use the cloud to get the row of coins
on the left. Bounce off the spring flower to reach another cloud and more
coins followed by another spring flower to reach a branch. Knock out the Spear
Thrower and make your way to the bottom left branch to grab the bomb potion.
Go up one branch and left to get the food. Now get next to the wall of blocks
and use a bomb to break it. Go left, jump over the squirrel and get the Magic
potion to end the level.
=============================================================================
4.14– Level 3-2
=============================================================================
Keeping with the over-sized environments, this level seems to involve giant
webs and Spiders.
Go right and jump on the single leaf, which will fall, to reach the bunch of
leaves which is a steady platform. Use the next leaf to reach another leafy
platform and then a solid one with a cloud potion.
Use the red/yellow platform to reach the next leafy platform and the following
red/yellow platform. Use a cloud potion to reach the upper right platform and
beware the bees that fly past.
Continue right, across the next couple of leafy platforms and get the bomb
potion. Return to the platform with the bees. Throw a bomb at the Legionnaire
and get on his platform. Do this again a few more platforms to the left. Also,
beware a spider that moves up and down in the web. Continue along single
leaves and leafy platforms until you reach a cloud, food and some coins.
Go right to the leafy platform and jump up to the stone platform. Knock out
the Carnivorous Plant and continue right. Jump across a series of leafy
platforms while avoiding a couple of Spiders. Use your last bomb on the second
Spider and jump onto the stone platform. Avoid the projectiles and jump over
the Projectile Plant to grab the Magic potion and end the level.
=============================================================================
4.15– Level 3-3
=============================================================================
This level seems to be situated next to a fast-running river.
Begin by grabbing the two coins on the left and then proceed right. Beware the
tree trunk in your way – it is a disguised Legionnaire. Knock him out and
ascend the slope to reach the blue column. Change into Obelix and push the
column to the very edge of the platform. Change back into Asterix and wait for
the dandelion’s spores to fall before jumping to the flower’s platform.
Jump the gap to the next platform, pass an empty tree trunk and knock out
another Legionnaire in a tree trunk. Make your way across the thin platforms
as you avoid various flying critters such as bees and dragonflies. You
eventually reach another dandelion. Avoid the spores and walk past it to be
propelled upwards onto a stone platform.
Grab the bomb potion on the right and proceed left across more thin platforms
until you reach a stone platform. A tossed bomb is the easiest way to clear
the dog on the next platform. Toss more bombs to get rid of two Legionnaires
on the following platforms.
Jump over the scurrying squirrel and reach the next platform to grab the Magic
potion and end the level.
=============================================================================
4.16– Level 3-4
=============================================================================
This level seems to unfold in a cave or mine.
Drop down to the right and immediately go left to drop into a hidden area
containing coins, a one-up heart and invincibility (MEGA). Grab them all and
go left to use the spring to return to the upper platform.
Continue right until you can jump up to an upper right platform. Grab the two
potions (bombs and cloud) in this area. Go back left and drop to the lower
right platform. Continue down the steps and knock out the Portly Legionnaire.
Before ascending the steps on the right, go through the stone wall to reach a
hidden area containing coins, food and a bag of gold. Return to where you
dispatched the Portly Legionnaire.
Ascend the steps on the right, while using a bomb to knock out the Legionnaire
standing guard. At the top, get past the spike chandelier and go down a step
before using a red/yellow platform to cross a spike pit. Some kind of Giant
Beetle awaits on the other side. Turn into Obelix to knock it out. Turn back
into Asterix and reach the upper left platform to acquire a bomb potion.
Return to the right and get by a spike chandelier before dropping down a
second step and going left to find another hidden area. This one contains
coins and a one-up heart. (We now seem to be maxed out at 9 for extra lives.
However, the game continues to keep track of lives past 9.)
Go all the way right and use a spring to reach a platform to the upper left.
Climb the steps to the left, while being attentive to arrows. There are two
coins on a platform to the upper right. Once at the top, you must get through
a passage that is obstructed by a Giant Beetle while a Legionnaire is throwing
spears downwards. The narrow passage prevents your using Obelix in its
confines. Avoid the spears as you track the beetle to the left. Immediately
change into Obelix as you exit the passage and knock out the Giant Beetle.
Change back into Asterix and pass beneath the Spear Thrower. Knock out this
Legionnaire as you climb onto his platform and then cross the top platform
before moving down the steps on the left side. Use Obelix to push the boulder
all the way left and change into Asterix before moving beneath the spiked
ceiling and the spiked chandelier.
Proceed left and jump the spike pit before dropping down to knock out a
Legionnaire hiding in a tree trunk. Continue left and grab the Magic potion to
end the level.
=============================================================================
4.17– Level 3-5
=============================================================================
Back into the forest with a rabid Dog running back and forth to the right.
Proceed right and knock out the Dog. Keep going right and drop down to a lower
platform. Ignore the hidden mushroom that acts like a spring and drop again to
the right. This is a narrow passage that contains a vine potion. Stock up and
return to the mushroom platform. Go left and avoid the fish and rabbit in
order to reach a bomb potion on the next platform. Return to the mushroom
platform. Use the mushroom to reach the upper left platform.
Ascend the next platforms to the upper left to reach one with four coins. Grab
the coins and return to the mushroom platform in order to get on the upper
right platform.
Use the cloud to reach a platform with a dandelion. Continue right and avoid a
rolling boulder as you ascend a slope. At the top, get onto the upper left
platform and continue left to reach a platform with food and coins. Drop down
to the right and return to the top of the slope.
Go right and knock out a Legionnaire in a tree trunk. Drop down to the right
and use a vine potion to pass a Legionnaire ghost. Continue left to grab two
potions (root and cloud). Return past the Ghost Legionnaire by using another
vine potion. (Bear in mind that you cannot jump when wrapped in vines. You
must therefore use the potion on the same level as the ghost.) Return down the
slope and past the dandelion to drop down on the right.
Go right and use a cloud potion to get past the pillar. Beware the spores and
the Fish on the other side and continue past a Projectile Plant and its shots.
Jump over the plant to reach a lower platform with a Dandelion. Past that, go
up a slope and avoid the bouncing boulder to reach the top. Grab the coins and
bomb potion before proceeding to the thin platforms.
There are many platforms above a lake of water. Some of these platforms have
coins or other items (chalice). Other platforms have enemies (Legionnaires,
Crabs) which are placed on the left edge. A bomb is needed to knock them out.
(You can always return to the left starting platform to restock on bombs.)
There are also Bees which fly across the screen. A successful crossing brings
you to another Dandelion. Continue all the way right, past a number of
platforms with enemies (Projectile Plants, Fish) and stand on the stacked flat
rocks to reach the upper left platform.
Move left, across a number of platforms, past a Carnivorous Plant and a
Dandelion, until you reach a Spider. Knock it out with a bomb and continue
ascending the platforms to the right.
As you reach the top platform and start descending, beware the Bees that fly
across the screen. As the platforms level out, you must jump to another area
with a Dandelion. Jump to the upper right platform and grab the Magic potion
to end the level.
=============================================================================
4.18– Level 3-6 Boss Fight
=============================================================================
This is another boss fight which isn’t really one.
Asterix and a Legionnaire are standing on a log which is floating on the
water. The idea is to spin the log so that it moves all the way to the right
and knocks out the Legionnaire. You need to rapidly alternate between the A
and X buttons to counter the Legionnaire’s spinning and make the log move to
the right. Just keep alternately mashing those buttons until you hit the right
wall.
=============================================================================
4.19– Level 4-1 (Password 02174)
=============================================================================
From the décor, I suspect that this level occurs within the Circus Maximus in
Rome. There is only one way to find out...
Go right to the edge of what looks like a stone cage. Notice the pit and what
seems to be debris at the bottom. I think that it is broken glass. Obviously,
the game designers had no idea how expensive and relatively rare glass was at
that time. Regardless, you need to time your jumps with the appearing and
disappearing stone platforms. Their pattern is five seconds visible and five
seconds invisible.
Go right, across the three temporary platforms and a cloud to reach the next
cage. Jump up when a platform appears and rush left to what appears to be a
spiked helmet with feet. This enemy patrols a defined section. If you walk
along five sections of platform and stop as you reach the edge of the sixth,
Asterix will hang off of it and be safe from the Spiked Helmet. Knock it out
and proceed left when the platform appears. At the end, jump up to grab bomb
potions and prepare to jump and go right. This time, walk four sections before
stopping to knock out the Spiked Helmet. As you reach the next cage, jump up
to grab a vine potion.
After this, continue making your way down to the bottom on the right to reach
a Ghost Legionnaire. Use a vine potion to pass him and climb back up on the
other side. Make it to the top cage platform and drop down to the right to
grab some coins. Drop down again to get a bomb potion on the left.
Beware the disappearing platforms on the right. When they appear quickly move
forward, jump on the upper right platform and bomb the Legionnaire in order to
occupy his platform. From here, go up two platforms to get cloud potions.
Return to the previous Legionnaire platform.
Wait for a platform to appear on the right and use it to reach a platform over
a glass-studded log. Quickly move to the right end of this platform before the
other sections disappear. Continue and drop right on the steel platform. Watch
for the falling drops of fire that send flames along the floor in both
directions. Get to the end of the steel platform and enter the cage to get a
bomb potion and some coins.
Return to the steel platform and throw a cloud potion on the stone that is
above the glass-topped log. Use the cloud to reach the upper left platform
which has a bomb potion and coins. When the other stones appear, go right and
jump the gap to reach the top of the cage platform. Keep in mind that there is
still fire dripping from a blue pipe.
Go by the spring to get the coin and then use the spring to reach the second
level in the cage platform. Go left to exit the cage. If you need food, go
left and jump into the cage to get food and drop down (picking up coins) to
wind up over the platform with the bomb potion of the previous paragraph.
Otherwise, jump on top of the cage to grab the invincibility (MEGA). (Wait
until the stones have disappeared, or else you’ll waste part of the
invincibility stuck in this area.)
Jump to the second level of the cage on the left and, as the stones appear,
jump onto them and climb the steps to reach the platform that sticks out
above. Get on top of the cage and jump over the approaching Spiked Helmet. Go
right to get the coins and wait as the Spiked Helmet approaches. Knock it out
and proceed left to jump the gap and reach the top of the cage platform.
Go left and drop through the cage while getting three coins. Continue left to
the wall and wait for the stones to disappear. Asterix will drop on a lower
platform and be level with a one-up heart. Wait for the stones to reappear to
get the heart and keep left as the stones disappear anew. Use a cloud potion
to return to the upper right platform.
When the stones return, use a small platform to reach the upper left platform
formed by the blue column. Stone fragments fly across the screen at regular
intervals. Avoid them as you wait for the stones to disappear, permitting you
to drop down on the left. Jump the gaps to the left and use an appearing stone
to reach a platform with a rock throwing Gaul. This enemy is facing the wrong
way. Knock him out and jump to the platform with a potion when the stones
disappear. Replenish your stock of cloud potions.
Return to the platform where the Gaul was and throw a cloud potion on the
appearing stones to the left. Use the cloud to get to the upper left area.
Gather the coins and then use the appearing stones to go to the upper right
platform. Get the vine potion and return to where you grabbed the cloud potion
(lower left).
Get on top of the cage and go left. A Ghost Legionnaire is patrolling to the
lower left. Before you go past this guy, jump up into the cage. There is food
in its upper right corner and a one-up heart in the far left portion. Return
to the Ghost Legionnaire and use the vine potion to get by this guarding
spectre. Continue left and grab the Magic potion that ends the level.
=============================================================================
4.20– Level 4-2
=============================================================================
Ahh, the inevitable winter level...Get a load of the falling snowflakes that
look more like stars. I appreciate the way the snow accumulation on the side
of the platforms looks like a skull in some areas.
See the snowman on the left? Notice its eyes. They do not change. This is a
legitimate snowman. The one on the upper right platform has twinkling eyes. It
is, in actuality, a Gaul in disguise. Avoid him for now.
Scale the ice pillar and drop down to the right. Drop to the immediate left on
another ice pillar. Use the floating ice to jump the gaps to the left and
reach some coins. Return to the bottom ice pillar.
Jump up to the platform and then jump right to a pair of ice pillars with a
Snowman (notice the eyes). Approach with caution (the snow balls can harm
Asterix) and knock out the Gaul. Continue going right to grab a bomb potion.
You can use a bomb to break the blocks to the upper right or back-track to the
beginning and us the ice pillar to reach the Snowman to the upper right and
continue across two platforms (the jump is a long one, but doable) to reach a
sickle and drop to the right of the aforementioned wall.
Past the wall, go up the incline and to the right while avoiding huge rolling
snowballs and jump to reach an isolated platform with a harmless snowman. If
you drop down directly beneath the platform, you can land on an ice block.
Going all the way left nets you a bomb potion and going right permits you to
scale a number of platforms leading to the upper right, where you can acquire
a cloud potion (beware the falling icicles).
Go left for two platforms and drop down to the ice pillars below the
platform’s ground level. Jump right to encounter a Gaul Snowman and jump to
the next platform on the right. Toss a cloud potion against the platform on
the right and use it to reach the top to knock out the Gaul Snowman.
Go down the slope and jump onto the ascending slope. Jump over the huge
rolling snowball and grab the coins as you reach the edge of the platform.
Drop down to the right and knock out the Snowman. Proceed to the right to
eventually reach a Magic potion that ends the level.
=============================================================================
4.21– Level 4-3
=============================================================================
A return to green scenery, this level occurs in the forest. A little note here
– the trees are in the foreground, so keep in mind that some things may be
behind them.
Ascend the slope to grab the coins and notice that even the Bat disappears
behind some objects. This is more than a little ridiculous. Regardless, you
need to be extra alert in this environment. Keep climbing the slope and drop
right to get some coins (the décor is now reminiscent of Sonic the Hedgehog).
Drop down again and knock out the Bat. Crouch and scoot right to get potions
(bomb and cloud). Move left to get to the bottom, where a Skeleton is tossing
his head towards you. Toss a bomb at it and continue right. Drop down,
avoiding the spring as you land.
Go right and knock out the Bat before jumping down to grab a bag of gold.
Continue left and drop down to get a vine potion. Use this potion to get by
the Ghost Legionnaire and grab two potions (vine and flying) to the right.
Return to the spring by using a vine potion to get by the Ghost Legionnaire
and a cloud potion to reach the spring platform. Proceed left.
Jump over the spikes and use Obelix to push the boulder to the left. Use the
boulder to climb to the upper left and crouch to navigate through a narrow
passage. Drop down and go left to step on a switch that opens a door to the
right. Continue right to fall and get a cloud potion.
Follow the path to the left and use a cloud potion to cross the spike pit.
Knock out the Skeleton. Drop down on a spring to be propelled to the top left
for a cloud potion. Return to the bottom, while avoiding the spring, and go
left. Jump over the worm and grab the food. Avoid touching the red/yellow
platform.
Go all the way left and turn around to throw a cloud potion at the platform’s
edge. Use the cloud to reach the Skeleton and knock him out. Go right to grab
a key and a couple coins.
Return all the way to the first spring and then further up to where you
knocked out the first Bat. Don’t neglect the restocking of any potions on the
way. Use a flying potion to leave the cave and go right.
Go down the slope, gathering coins and stopping at its bottom, some distance
before the column. A Centurion is moving back and forth behind the column.
Knock out the Centurion and use the column to reach a bomb potion on the next
column. You can continue to the upper left to knock out a Legionnaire, but
that is as far as you can go in that direction due to a closed door.
Drop down to the right and continue right until you see blocks obstructing the
access to a cave. Turn into Obelix and butt-smash your way through three sets
of two blocks before pushing to the right as you fall in order to not land on
some spikes.
Turn into Asterix and continue right as you unlock the door and step on the
yellow bubble switch. Return to the spikes and use a flying potion to reach
the platform at the upper left before leaving the cave. Go left and turn into
Obelix to break the blocks. Turn back into Asterix and continue left to get
food and past the rising door. Jump the gap to get the cloud potion and drop
down. Proceed right and jump the gap to reach an area with a Ghost
Legionnaire. You do not need a vine potion here. There is enough room to jump
over this enemy to get the flying potion. Fall down to the bottom and go to
the extreme left, past the Spider, and then up three platforms to reach and
step on a yellow bubble switch. Return to the right, past the Spider, to the
left of the running Rat. There is a mushroom spring that sends you back up.
Reach the upper left platform, go left and use a flying potion to go to the
top of the cave. Go all the way right and use another flying potion at the
shaft to leave the cave. Reach the top of the screen and get past the rising
door beneath the column.
Walk down the hill, collecting coins and knocking out a Legionnaire. At the
bottom, there is nothing to be gained from going right. Get into the cave and
proceed left. Crouch and scoot through the passage. Drop down and go right to
reach a blue column which must be pushed to the right (off the platform) by
Obelix. Drop down and push the column over the spikes to the left. Keep going
left and drop down while pushing left to avoid the spikes. Continue left to
reach a key and cloud potion.
Return right and change into Obelix to push the first blue column you
encounter to the right, next to the spikes. Use Asterix to reach the upper
right platform. The only way to get past the small spike pit without incurring
damage is to use a flying potion and also float up to the top of this area.
Pass the blue column and continue all the way to the left, up the steps to the
platform’s edge. Don’t bother going down. Jump up to get the food and then
reach the upper right to unlock the door.
Go right. There is more food to the right, beneath a couple of blocks that
Obelix can break. Next, go left to get a coin and then a Magic potion that
ends the level.
=============================================================================
4.22– Level 4-4
=============================================================================
This level seems to occur on a ship.
Start by jumping to the upper right to grab a bag of gold. Now drop down left,
then right to go into the ship’s hold. Follow the path zig-zagging downwards,
while knocking out a Centurion and doing your best to avoid a Rat (I did not
succeed without damage). At the bottom, crouch and scoot over to the right
side. Watch for arrows as you climb the steps and reach a cloud potion to the
upper left.
Return to the right, beware the arrows and use a cloud potion to scale the
wall. Drop down and pass the barrel. Cross the gap and go up to get the key.
Return left and drop down to the lower level to proceed right. At the blue
column, use it to reach the upper left platform with the Rat. Watch for
arrows. Avoid the Rat as you grab the cloud potion and go back to the blue
column.
Change into Obelix and push the column to the left. The arrows are still
flying, so you will need to jump regularly to avoid them. Use the column to
unlock the door in the upper right. Get past the door and continue right,
while avoiding still more arrows, and make your way up the main deck.
Go right to pick up some coins and then left to knock out a Centurion in your
way. Jump to the upper left and take out another Centurion. As you reach the
left edge of this platform, notice the arrows going left. If you wait, and
equal number will then come to the right. You need to quickly jump down and
back up on the other side. Avoid the gap which will drop you back into the
hold of the ship. Your next obstacle is a Spear Thrower. Once past him, there
is a Centurion to deal with. You can also go up and knock out the Spear
Thrower.
Beware the arrows as you continue left to jump the gap and climb the steps. It
is now time to climb up into the masts. See that white line going up to the
upper left? It acts like a ramp. (Yeah, my sentiments exactly. The rope
doesn’t even bend under the weight of Obelix!)
Grab the bomb potion and throw one at the Legionnaire blocking your progress
to the upper right. Get on the Legionnaire’s platform and then go across the
next ropes to knock out two more Legionnaires and a Centurion.
As you reach the end of the line, literally, you are confronted with a couple
of cloud platforms that must be negotiated to reach a platform from which
another rope begins. (You can drop down below this platform to get food and
come back.) A Skeleton awaits you at the end of this rope. Toss him a bomb and
walk in to grab the Magic potion that ends the level.
=============================================================================
4.23– Level 4-5
=============================================================================
The décor here can suggest a different type of vessel or a wharf. However, it
looks more like a wharf due to those harmful spikes that seem to be mooring
structures. On the other hand, when you start climbing into the upper
elements, there are sails...
Start by going left to grab a cloud potion. Now go right and use a cloud
potion to cross the line of spikes. The next series of spikes (1-4-1) can be
safely jumped without assistance. However, the next batch is seven long and
there is a Skeleton at the end. Throw a cloud potion near the Skeleton and use
it to clear the spikes and get over the Skeleton. You may be tempted to knock
out the Skeleton from behind. Remember to also dodge the skull.
Continue right, past the next two series of spikes, before having to repeat
the tactic above with the Skeleton. Once past the Skeleton, jump some spikes
and reach the upper right platform. Next, go to the upper left by using
another one of those amazing ropes. Reach the sail and use the red/yellow
blocks to jump the gaps leading to another sail.
Continue right, knocking out a Legionnaire, before reaching another sail next
to a crow’s nest (the latter cannot be used as a platform). Drop down and go
right to grab a couple of coins, before coming back to proceed left, where
there is another Legionnaire. Beware the spikes on the edges of the platforms
as you jump over and knock out the Legionnaire. Continue left and beware a
possible falling spear as you travel across another rope. Take care to hop up
to the next rope before you reach the end of the present rope or you will fall
through the sail. (Yeah.)
Go right, jumping more spikes to reach another sail from which you can see the
Spear Thrower and a Portly Legionnaire patrolling the next sail. Time your
jump and knock out the Legionnaire to reach another rope leading to the upper
right. Remember to jump up onto the rope. Reach the sail and jump over a spike
to then hop across some platforms to reach the next sail.
Continue to the extreme right and then up and to the left across more sails,
over spikes and upon red/yellow platforms. Also, spears will need to be dodged
and a Centurion knocked out. You will eventually reach a wall of blocks which
will require Obelix to get through.
From here, drop down to the left and knock out a Legionnaire. Jump to the next
sail on the left and use the rope to climb higher to the upper right. Proceed
across more sails, ropes and clouds until you reach a Portly Legionnaire.
Knock him out and make your way to the platform just above to grab the flying
potion.
Return to the lower right platform and use the flying potion to go right and
reach a platform with the Magic potion upon it. Use the potion to end the
level.
=============================================================================
4.24– Level 4-6 Boss Fight
=============================================================================
Asterix is on a pirate ship and its Captain is standing in the upper left
corner. At first, he sends down his parrot – which can be knocked out, but
reappears and returns to the Captain’s shoulder (I do not know if knocking it
out is helpful). At this point, the Captain drops down to your level and stays
immobile for a moment. This is the time to get a hit in on him, because he is
soon moving back and forth (maybe four times) before reaching one side and
jumping back up to a top corner and repeating the process.
In the end, it took at least 12 hits, maybe as many as 15, to knock out the
Captain.
=============================================================================
4.25– Level 5-1 (Password 98613)
=============================================================================
This level occurs in an aqueduct system. There is also a very pink sky which
makes you want to tear out your eyes.
While avoiding self-mutilation, push to the right as soon as the level begins.
This permits you to get some coins before you drop down to the left, into the
water. Keep in mind that the flow of water has an effect on your movements.
Walk right to where there are two streams of water joining the one you are in.
Jump up to the right and knock out a Centurion. Keep right and reach the next
platform to get a cloud potion. Return left to where you met the Centurion.
Jump the gap to the left and use a cloud potion to reach the higher platform.
Jump up to the next two platforms to knock out a Spear Thrower.
Drop down to the right and walk up the slope to gather some coins. At the top,
jump the gap to the right while avoiding spears. Use a cloud potion to jump up
and reach the Spear Thrower. Go left to gather the coins and return right to
go through the wall.
Drop to the right and get the coins as you fall on the platform. Proceed right
and drop next to a Centurion. Knock him out and drop to the left. Then drop
off to the left again, falling all the way to the bottom.
Grab the coins and go right, before jumping up to knock out a Legionnaire. Do
the same on the next platform and keep going upwards until you encounter a
Legionnaire walking up and down a slope. Take him out and make your way down,
then up where spears are dropping down. Carefully go up the platforms and
knock out the Spear Thrower. Grab the bag of gold and the cloud potion. Drop
down to the right until you are in water.
Slowly ride the water down the slope (gravity is clearly an arbitrary force in
this game) and, while avoiding a Frog, use the cloud to reach the next
platform on the right. Next, throw a cloud potion against the column and use
the temporary platform to reach the top of the columns.
Your next task is jumping across two platforms where there are falling spears.
Once on the platform past the spears, keep going right while grabbing coins
and jumping platforms until you reach a sickle and a bomb potion. Stock up and
return to the platform just to the right of the spears.
Now, go up and to the left while knocking out the Spear Throwers. Once on the
platform past the second Spear Thrower, you start ascending platforms to the
right. Use a bomb to get rid of the Legionnaire and reach an area with spears.
Jump up right before the spears and step on the yellow switch. Jump up to
knock out the Spear Thrower and quickly drop off. There is an enemy tossing
stuff in your direction. It looks like a Legionnaire who does not have his
armor. Drop down to the right and go up the slope while avoiding a rolling
boulder. Jump up behind the Armorless Legionnaire and smack him upside the
head. This one sure looks terrified as he tumbles off the structure.
Drop off to the right and ride the water down while picking up some coins.
Jump over the Legionnaires that are standing in your way. You can always come
back up and knock them out when you’re behind them. Once at the bottom of the
slope, jump off to the right and fall in the middle of the gap to hit a spring
which is on a lower platform. Use the spring to reach the red/yellow platform
and walk right to get the Magic potion that ends the level.
=============================================================================
4.26– Level 5-2
=============================================================================
This is the first level that really seems odd to me. Asterix is the size of a
beer can and is moving around a dining table. I don’t remember Asterix having
anything to do with giants in any of the books or movies.
Start by going right and using the barrels to reach the platform with a bomb
potion. Keep in mind that the bone remains on the table will cause damage.
There does not seem to be a way across the bones without taking damage. You
can use a bomb to knock out the Legionnaire (replace the bomb) and try to jump
the gap, but you cannot get enough distance to clear the bones.
Past the bones, use the cheese to reach the next platform. Drop off to the
right and ignore the spring jelly for now. Reach what looks like a yellow cake
and quickly move to its right edge to toss a bomb at an Armorless Legionnaire.
Immediately hop after the toss to avoid whatever is coming at you. Next, jump
to the barrels and reach the platform. Continue right and use the cloud to
grab some coins and get to the next right platform. Knock out the Bat that
flies towards Asterix before dropping down and going left to grab two potions
(cloud and flying). Jump over the bones to the right.
Knock out a Legionnaire and go all the way right to get some food. Use the red
jelly to jump up and reach two coins as well as a small platform. Crouch to
scoot through the narrow passage going left. The potion above the passage is
one of flying. Drop down the gap, onto the cheese.
Use a flying potion to get past the bones and go up to the platform with the
three barrels. Use the barrels to reach the platform on the upper left. Crouch
and scoot to the left to get the key and a vine potion. Return to the three
barrels and drop to the left. Go down and get the potions and keep going left.
Use the cloud to reach the platform.
Use a flight potion to get over the bones and go up through the gap on the
left. Grab the coins and use the yellow bottle to reach the grey blocks
preventing progress to the right. Use Obelix to break the blocks and then
knock out the Legionnaire. Use a flying potion to reach the upper left
platform and go across the gap to scoot through the narrow passage. Drop down
past the spikes and follow the path to the upper right to get a key and a
flying potion. Return to the yellow bottle.
Jump across the gap and use a flying potion to get the cloud potion above the
locked door. Next, unlock the door and use the cloud to reach to upper left
platform with the blocks. Use Obelix to break the blocks and revert to Asterix
to go through the opening.
Jump the gap and scoot through the opening. Drop down to the left and get past
the Spider as it rises. Keep going left and scoot through the wall to reach a
vine potion. Return to the pile of barrels. Get to the top and reach the
platform above the Spider to get some coins.
Return to the area where you got a pair of potions (flying and cloud) and
stock up anew. Use a flying potion to reach the upper platform with two pink
bottles. Go through the narrow passage, jump the gap and use Obelix to break
the block. Scoot through the opening and use a flying potion to reach the
locked door. Proceed left and use a vine potion to get by the Ghost
Legionnaire. Continue left and grab the Magic potion to end the level.
=============================================================================
4.27– Level 5-3
=============================================================================
It’s raining and we are running around in what seems to be a temple.
Go right until you reach a wooden structure from which spears are falling.
Jump to the top of the structure and knock out the Spear Thrower. Also, pick
up the cloud potion. Strange...There is a roof above Asterix, since no rain
drops appear to touch him. However, each level of the wooden structure is
receiving rainfall as indicated by the splattering drops. This phenomenon
recurs throughout the level.
Drop to the right and look out for arrows as you climb the steps. At the top
of the steps, use a cloud potion to reach the higher platform and knock out
the Centurion. Proceed right and use Obelix to break the blocks. Revert to
Asterix to scoot through the narrow passage and drop to the bottom of the
screen. Go left to grab some potions (bomb and cloud). Go right to knock out a
Legionnaire. At the wall, use a cloud potion to reach the high platform and
knock out the stationary Legionnaire.
Drop to the right and continue until you get a flying potion. (You can use a
flying potion to go back two statues and get a cloud potion at the top of the
area. Come back to replace it.) Climb the steps above the potion to reach a
Centurion. Knock him out and go left to get a bomb potion.
Return right and use a flight potion to fly towards the upper right platform
and reach the wooden one to the upper left. Scoot beneath the blocks and throw
a bomb at the Legionnaire on the other side of the spike pit. Jump across the
pit and toss a cloud potion at the spikes. Jump onto the cloud and toss a bomb
at the Legionnaire. Jump onto the platform and go left to get some coins. Toss
your last bomb at the third Legionnaire and use the cloud to clear the spike
pit.
Continue left, crossing gaps with spikes as you time your jumps with the
Spiders. When you reach a Legionnaire, knock him out and continue left to get
the Magic potion and end the level.
=============================================================================
4.28– Level 5-4
=============================================================================
Once again, we are outside. A roman camp is in the background.
Go right and encounter a new challenge. An unsecured red/yellow platform is
swinging. Here is the easiest way to get on it - walk to the edge and jump
straight up as it swings towards Asterix, you will most likely land on it.
Jump off as it reaches the height of its swing on the right.
Beware the arrows as you climb the steps to the left. Knock out the Portly
Legionnaire and jump to the top platform. Go right and use the cloud to cross
the gap. Watch for more arrows as you make your way to the bottom. Grab the
bomb potion. Go right to see what appears to be a Legionnaire disguised as a
damsel in distress. This “damsel” is blowing kisses at you as she sits in a
chair that is hanging from a beam. Yeah, entirely believable. Anyway, see that
bullseye at the end of the beam? Throw a bomb at it and watch the imposter
tumble into the abyss. Replace the bomb and jump the gap.
Use the block to get onto the beams and collect some coins. Jump to the upper
right before going left to get a cloud potion. Stock up and continue right.
Jump across the water basins and activate the yellow switch. Return to the
platform with the single block.
Stand on the very edge (right side) and toss a bomb in order to knock the
coconut(?) off the pedestal. This makes the wooden spikes sink into the
ground. Jump the gap and proceed right. Here you have two choices. You can
take the high road by climbing onto the tent and grabbing coins as you
eventually reach a Legionnaire. Or you can take the low road by simply going
right, knocking out a Portly Legionnaire and getting a bomb potion before
reaching the other side of the tent, where a regular Legionnaire awaits.
Reach the platform above the right edge of the tent. Throw a cloud potion
against the right wall and jump onto the top. Use bomb potions to break the
blocks ahead and enter the area to get a one-up heart, some coins and a bomb
potion. Return to the ground and go right to encounter another Damsel in
Distress. Eliminate her using the bullseye, replace the bomb by going left and
return to jump the gap.
Another coconut on a pedestal. Deal with it and jump the gap. Proceed right
and jump the gaps until you come to a swinging red/yellow block. Use the
swinging block to reach the upper platform and go left, across two platforms,
to reach a Centurion. Knock him out and jump the water. Drop down to the left
to reach a bomb potion. Drop down to the right and return to the swinging
platform.
Climb onto the swinging platform and cross the gap in order to reach a couple
coins and a fixed platform. Get onto the next swinging platform and remain on
it as you toss a bomb (start pressing the X button at the bottom of the arc)
at the coconut on the pedestal (this eliminates wooden spikes further on). On
the next swing, cross the gap and land at the bottom of the pedestal. Jump the
gap and climb up the rope to the tent.
Avoid the bees and go over the tent to encounter an Armorless Legionnaire.
Quickly throw a bomb at him and jump up to grab a bomb potion. Ascend the
platforms going left and knock out a couple of Legionnaires before reaching
the Magic potion and ending the level.
=============================================================================
4.29– Level 5-5
=============================================================================
This stage looks foul. Asterix is at street level and there seems to be sewage
flowing about. Plus, we can see below ground level – which most likely means
that we are about to enter a sewer system.
Start by changing into Obelix and breaking the blocks to your left. Next, go
right, using platforms and a cloud to cross gaps until you reach an Armorless
Legionnaire. Time your jumps in order to get over him and knock him out from
behind. Continue right and use Obelix to break more blocks. Continue to the
right and grab a bomb potion. Go left and into the sewers.
Avoid the spring as you land. Slowly move to the right and observe the water
going up and down. You will take damage if you touch the water. Therefore wait
for it to be gone before going right to get a cloud potion. Your window is
about 6 seconds before the water comes up again. Stock up and return to the
spring.
Exit the sewer and go all the way to the left, where the level began. Fall
into the sewer. (This was not evident when you got the cloud potion, but
notice how the dim lighting can make the path difficult to follow. Also, this
is one place where seeing which potion is active can be a real pain.)
Avoid the spring as you land and move to the right. Stand just to the right of
the spring as you use a cloud potion to reach the upper right platform. Walk
right until you fall down the shaft. Bricks may come out of the walls and trap
you, but they will soon recede and Asterix will continue down to the platform.
Go left and navigate your way through the tunnel, getting a cloud potion along
the way, until you reach a yellow switch. Activate it and return to the area
beneath the shaft.
Drop down to the right and reach a blue column that you will need to
alternatively move and stand on as the water rises and falls. Once you’ve
reached the wall, revert to Asterix and jump up onto the platform. Continue
right and use a cloud potion to jump up to where there is a shaft above
Asterix. Hop up, pressing right and then left, to reach a boulder. Change into
Obelix and push it to the left wall. Jump to the upper left and follow the
tunnel until you reach a red switch on an upper left platform. Activate it and
return to the shaft to fall down.
Continue right and drop down. Proceed right and jump up into the alcove to
avoid the water. When the water recedes, drop down and scoot through the
narrow passage and jump to the upper right platform. Walk through the door and
drop down the shaft.
Go left and push another blue column to the left. This is a long one and
Obelix isn’t the quickest Gaul around. Do not push the column all the way
against the wall or you will not be able to use it on the way back. At the end
of it is a cloud potion. Return to the area at the bottom of the shaft.
Go right and stand at the bottom of another shaft. Use a couple of cloud
potions to make your way to the top. Drop to the right and follow the path to
a cloud potion. Return to from where you dropped down.
Asterix is standing below another shaft. Hop up when the brick comes out of
the wall and use it to reach the upper right platform. Another shaft that
needs to be climbed using cloud potions. At the top, use the cloud to cross
the spike pit and then the spring to exit the sewers.
Back at ground level, go left to grab a one-up heart. Now go right to knock
out a Centurion and grab the Magic potion to end the level.
=============================================================================
4.30– Level 5-6 Boss Fight
=============================================================================
Boss fight!
If this farce can even be called a boss fight...This had better not be the
final boss!!
Asterix is standing in what appears to be the Colosseum and there is a Blue
Bear playing hide and seek. Exactly that! He starts by running by you and then
pops his head out of the three openings. The trick is to get next to the
opening he will be at and punch him. If you do not react immediately, the bear
may maul Asterix for some serious damage. Also, contact with the bear, whether
from his running around or by touching his head at an opening, causes damage.
As the level starts, immediately prepare to jump over the oncoming bear.
(Start from the extreme edge of the screen opposite the oncoming bear and walk
towards him to execute a successful jump.) Then, as far as I could determine,
these are the openings his head popped out of (as you can see, there is no set
pattern):
- Left
- Running BY
- Middle
- Left
- Right
- RUNNING BY
- Middle
- Right
- RUNNING BY
- Left
- RUNNING BY
- Right
- Left
- RUNNING BY (back and forth)
At this point, when the bear is just running back and forth, change into
Obelix and land a butt drop onto its head three or four times. This knocks it
out cold and it just lies on the ground.
Caesar scowls and the game is essentially over!!!!
What is left is a scene showing the Gauls having their usual feast. The
following dialogue is shown:
“Well done. Your quest is over and peace has been restored to the Gauls’ tiny
village.”
What the heck is Cacofonix doing there? He was a boss! Anyway, there are only
ten Gauls at the table (only nine of which are visible, since Obelix is hidden
by a roast boar.
So, in the end, without the instruction booklet, there is no way of knowing
who was rescued by Asterix and Obelix, since these are the only Gaul villagers
that were in any way implicated in the game.
Way to go...

5- Enemies
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The enemies will be listed in the order you encounter them, mostly.
=============================================================================
5.1- Legionnaires
=============================================================================
These guys are your basic enemy. They are dressed in Roman garb and carry the
standard shield and spear. They seem to be assigned to specific areas which
they patrol. There are a variety of Legionnaires:
Regular Legionnaire – This enemy is slim and only requires one punch to knock
out.
Portly Legionnaire – This enemy is heavier and requires two punches from
Asterix. Be warned that some of these Legionnaires cannot be knocked out by
Asterix. Obelix is then necessary and can dispatch them with one punch.
Ghost Legionnaires – These soldiers cannot be hurt. Asterix and Obelix’s
punches only stop them in their tracks. Asterix needs the vine potion to pass
unmolested through the ghost.
Legionnaire Archer – As the name implies, this foe shoots arrows at you. In
some areas, he pops up out of the ground, takes a shot and sinks below ground
level. Since he doesn’t turn around, use this time to get behind him.
Spear Thrower – These guys throw spears down vertically from tree branches or
other structures. They are inoffensive when approached from the side and easy
to knock out.
Tree Trunk – These guys are disguised as tree trunks. They can be spotted by
the presence of eyes within holes in the trunk (not all such trunks contain
Legionnaires). They start moving as you approach them, so be alert and hit
them once to knock them out.
Armorless Legionnaire – A Legionnaire who is only garbed in a blue tunic. As
an attack, he throws a variety of things (such as green apples, a chicken
drumstick and pieces of cake) in your direction. Avoid him, if possible, and
get behind him. Since this enemy does not turn around to face you, he is now
vulnerable to a single punch.
Damsel in Distress – A Legionnaire disguised as a woman trapped on a chair
hanging above a gap. These have no attacks but their positioning usually
prevents further progress. To get rid of them, you need to toss a bomb that
hits the bullseye which is located at the left end of the beam the chair is
tied to.
=============================================================================
5.2- Centurions
=============================================================================
These enemies are a step up from the Legionnaires and are easily recognizable
by their golden breastplate. Centurions require three hits to be knocked out.
Also, if you hesitate in front of them, they will pull out a dagger with which
they will block your attacks. If this happens, you need to retreat so that the
Centurion starts moving again. Then return to your striking location.
=============================================================================
5.3- Gauls
=============================================================================
These are relatively rare and I wonder if they aren’t supposed to be Goths.
Nonetheless, a couple of these can be encountered in the game. They are:
- Rock Thrower: This Gaul stands on a platform and throws rocks in a
specific direction. Getting behind him does not cause him to turn
around. This approach is therefore recommended to neutralize him. One
punch knocks him out.
- Snowman: This Gaul is not apparent because it is disguised as a snowman.
The tell-tale sign that it is an enemy is the eyes, which seem to be
twinkling – a regular snowman’s eyes do not change. The Gaul becomes
apparent as you near the snowman and the snow falls away (this snow
forms snowballs that can cause damage). Approach it from a certain
distance in order to have time to knock him out. Only one punch is
necessary.
=============================================================================
5.4- Cacofonix (Boss)
=============================================================================
This guy shouldn’t be an enemy, since he is, after all, a Gaul. However, his
questionable ability to play the lute is hazardous to Asterix’s health. This
danger is present in the form of false notes which float down towards the
ground. A portion of health is lost for each note that touches Asterix.
=============================================================================
5.5- Birds
=============================================================================
There are various birds that fly across the screen in various areas. They
usually fly back and forth in locations where a jump is necessary. They are
generally easy to avoid, which is good since knocking them out does not seem
possible.
=============================================================================
5.6- Skeletons
=============================================================================
These enemies are nothing but bones. They are immobile and their attack is
throwing their skull ahead of them in the manner of a boomerang. You cannot
crouch and approach the Skeleton by passing beneath the skull’s path, since it
still damages you. Punching the skull is useless. You must toss a bomb over
the skull to knock out the rest of the bones. Beware that once the skeleton is
shattered, the skull may still come at you one final time.
Take note that not all Skeletons throw their skulls around. Some will just
stand there waiting to be mistreated. One punch knocks these guys out.
=============================================================================
5.7- Dandelion
=============================================================================
This plant appears as a dandelion without any petals. A bunch of spores are
emitted from its yellow bulb at regular intervals. These spores spread out and
fall to the sides of the plant – even below ground level. Standing beneath the
yellow bulb is a safe spot while waiting for the spores to clear away from
your path.
=============================================================================
5.8- Projectile Plant
=============================================================================
This plant has a bulbous yellow form and emits yellow projectiles. Avoid the
projectiles and the plant by jumping over them. It does not seem to turn
around, so you are safe once you are behind it. From this position, a single
punch knocks it out.
=============================================================================
5.9- Other critters
=============================================================================
Here are some other critters that make an appearance in the game:
- Octopus: These are spotted creatures that simply float up and down on a
fixed path. Don’t waste your time trying to knock them out. Just climb
on their head and use them as an elevator.
- Seahorse: These are present in water levels. They move left to right and
may sometimes be concealed by columns. One punch knocks them out.
- Bat: This is your typical bat. It flies back and forth in certain
levels. They are easy enough to avoid and can be knocked out with one
punch.
- Rabbit/Squirrel: This critter simply runs back and forth on a determined
path. Neither of the characters can knock it out, so you need to jump
over it.
- Dogs: These are pink and constantly run back and forth in a given
location. It is better to avoid them, since they are fairly quick.
However, one punch does knock them out.
- Bees: These just fly across the screen once.
- Dragonflies: These just fly across the screen once.
- Crabs: This enemy is green with red pincers. It can be mobile or at a
fixed spot. A single punch by Obelix knocks it out.
- Fish: These jump up and down where there is some water. Quite easy to
avoid and not worth trying to knock out.
- Carnivorous Plant: These creatures are mobile plants that have what
seems to be a couple of pincers. They move back and forth in a defined
area. One hit knocks them out.
- Spiders: These enemies are obviously lurking in webs. They move up and
down on threads of webbing and are not worth the effort of knocking out.
Just avoid them.
=============================================================================
5.10- Other Hazards
=============================================================================
Other hazards include active physical barriers and defense mechanisms. They
are:
Fire columns: These are columns of fire which rise and fall at regular
intervals from gaps in the floor.
Flaming torches: Obviously fire is harmful to our hero. Therefore, touching
flaming torches causes damage.
Fire balls: These are small balls of fire which fall upon a floor. Following
the impact, two flames appear and travel along opposite directions for a short
distance.
Fire tubes: These appear as orange tubes which project a burst of flame which
travels across the screen.
Rolling boulders: These are boulders that roll down a slope towards you. They
sometimes bounce, making it trickier to avoid being struck by them.
Spikes: Regular spikes either fixed on objects or rising up from the floor or
descending from the ceiling. A variation of this is their presence at the end
of a chain which rises and falls. I refer to the last one as a spiked
chandelier. They come in a variety of materials – wood, bone, iron.
Sickle platform: These are platforms that look like sickles. The wooden handle
is safe to walk upon. However, the blade part is hazardous to Asterix’s
health.
Molten steel: This comes from cauldrons that are tipped over. The molten steel
pours out at regular intervals.
Arrows: These seem to come out of nowhere and cross the screen. They are
obviously dangerous to your health. Some arrows are launched by Archers.
Spears: These come at you from above. They are thrown by Legionnaires that are
hiding in trees and other structures. Contact is not recommended.

11.0- Conclusion/Donations
=============================================================================
I do hope that you’ve enjoyed reading and using this FAQ to get you through
the game. I did my best to make it as informative and precise as possible, all
the while keeping it entertaining. However, I cannot deny that preparing a
document of this magnitude is quite a task. Therefore, here is something that
I’ve seen in some other FAQs.
Below is an email address for people who wish to make a donation to further my
efforts in drafting future FAQs. For everyone who used this FAQ, thank-you for
trusting my work and don’t be shy about giving me any feedback.
