History of this FAQ

23.3.2000 : -> finished the "Dark Savior Compendium 1.53" and
decided to start a few others. First of all, a
FAQ of WachenRöder !
23.3.2000 : ver1.00 -> finished the title and started the FAQ.
3.4.2000 : ver1.01 -> added an history of tRPGs in the Prelude plus a
translation section: "Ach zö !"
3.4.2000 : ver1.02 -> added Langrisser to the tRPGs history.
4.4.2000 : ver1.1 -> began the mighty techniques chapter, the Ach sö,
and some ascii art for explanation.
4.4.2000 : ver1.11 -> added a few more stuff and 3 new games on the
tRPG list: Vandal hearts, Arc the Lad and Front
Mission.

PRELUDE TO A WORLD OF DESPAIR
(As you see with this weird title, i decided to put some "ambiance" in
this FAQ. So instead of INTRO (e.g.) I've prefered to employ nicely (?)
turned sentences.)
I still haven't seen a lot of FAQs for this game ! Therefore, I under-
stood that as no one was going to move his butt, CHAZumaru had to work
on it. Well, this FAQ should take a long time, but the game worths it.
Note that D. Thompson's FAQ is small but nice and reliable. As usual,
mine is going to be more like a guide. But as I have finished the game
a few months ago and seeing the game is still in the gamefaqs' wanted
list, I've decided to play a role.
WachenRöder is a tactical RPG that was one of the last great games of
the Sega Saturn. It was produced in 1998 by SEGA. It's special attack
system is pretty cool and - what makes it a fantastic game - it's amb-
iance is pretty unique for a Tactical RPG: a kind of dark futuristic
post-apocalyptic world where words such as joy and peace are as much
unwelcomed as the IRS guys at my door... It changes a bit from SF3 and
FF Tactics, huh?
But what is a tRPG ? First of all, it means tactical Role Playing Game.
That's a game where you follow a RPG-like story, usually with a very
small freedom of movement, but where the numerous battles are played as
a wargame. Your party, including a dozen of characters, has to fight
against an enemy's army, turn by turn, with different characters owning
different abilities depending on their class or race (the archer hits
from a long distance but is weak, the Dwarf is slow but strong, etc...)
and a large battle ground divided in invisibles squares (like chess).
It appeared on consoles in the 80's and became pretty popular in the
middle of the 90's. Here is a list of a few titles that made this game
genre famous:

SHINING FORCE
I put it first 'cause it's my favorite video game series of all time.
It's the tactical (and most successful) part of Sega's "Shining" RPG
series and was the game that revealed - but I don't think invented -
this genre. SF1 was a (now) typical tRPG with heroic fantasy atmosphere
and an epic scenario. The astonishing graphics and animation plus all
the secret characters, classes, weapons, battles, etc... made it the
reference of tactical role playing. SF2 had another great scenario and
was much more pleasant to play because they corrected the few mistakes
of the first episode. Then came SF Gaiden 1, 2 and 3 on Game Gear; they
were less attractive but still pretty good. SF CD on Mega CD was a mix
of the GaGear 2 first episodes. Finally, 5 years after the second one,
the long awaited Shining Force 3 was out. It's yet the best (personal
point of view, guys) tRPG ever, because the idea was to create a story
of 3 heroes living their own story on 3 separate discs (episodes 1 to
3) released within 6 months. Each game adapted itself depending on what
you did on the other games and if you completed the 2 firsts, The 3rd
SF3's ending was completely different. Besides, they were smart enough
to remove every bug or annoying stuff seen in the previous episode.
Finally, a SF3 Premium disc was released for the first 10000 guys that
did something in Japan; well, as you get it, this disc, a kind of bonus
for SF lovers, it is just impossible to get, and that is the biggest
desillusion of my life. Ever.
Note: the 1st SF was done by Climax (Ryle from Landstalker made it's
1st appearance on SF1) SF2, SFG1,2,3 by Sonic Software Planning and
SF3 by Sonic Software Planning and Camelot (Mario Golf, Beyond the Be-
yond...).
TACTICS OGRE and FINAL FANTASY TACTICS
Tactics Ogre was the sequel of the Wargame Ogre Battle and is to many
the other reference in tRPG. It's system allowing to change classes any
time and demanding a sense of sacrifice (a char killed can't be brought
back to life!) is almost perfect, and the story, taken from a best sel-
ling novel in Japan, is really intensive. The guys from Quest, who cre-
ated the Ogre series, were then all bought back by Square soft, whom
for they 've done FF Tactics, the unofficial but even better sequel of
Tactics Ogre.
SAKURA TAISEN
Sakura Taïsen, or Sakura Wars, is a very famous tRPG in Japan. It is a
mix between japanim', tacticals, japanese humour and diokuseï games.
The ambiance and all the cartoons in-between the original battles makes
it an UFO in the world of gaming. For exemple, the story takes place in
a Tokio's Theater, in the 20's, where you'll find only (gorgeous) girls
that are in fact mech pilots for the japanese secret services (!?!?).
The girls do not have any exp points but the more they are in love with
you, the better they'll fight. Astonishing, huh? A lot of games under
the ST license came out because of the popularity of the game in Japan,
but only ST1 and ST2 are actual tRPGs.
ST3 will be released on the Dreamcast in September 2000 and is set in
Paris (my hometown, yeepee!).
Note: This game is edited by Sega but is a chef d'oeuvre produced by
Red, the geniuses that created Tengaï Makio.
REBUS/KARTIA
Kartia (Rebus in Japan) is a tRPG which takes a lot from FFT but allows
the player to create their own monsters on a system based on the paper-
scissors-stone game: monster A better than monster B better than mons-
ter C better than A. Besides, you had the ability to change the battle-
field shape considering that such weapon was better against a lower or
higher enemy; great game, really.
THE RECORDS OF LODOSS WARS
A SF clone on the Mega CD.
FEDA
Another clone of SF, but this time created by the team of the first SF.
Pretty good but doesn't match the original. The games released were
Feda, Feda Remake! and Feda 2.
BLACK/MATRIX
A great release on Saturn and soon on PS. A much nicer version, called
Black/Matrix Advanced, was released on the DC.
SUPER ROBOT TAISEN
Replace Taisen by "wars" to understand what it's all about...Absolutely
all the mechs from the japanimation, from Gundam to Evangelion, in a
huge crossover. A cult series of games. Including: SRT1, SRT2, SRT3,
4th SRT S, SRT F, SRT F final Kanketsouhen, SRT 64 and SRT alpha.
SD GUNDAM
Same system, but just for Gundam. I'm sure there has been a lot of them
on the SFC, but I only know SDG G-Generation and SDG G-Generation Zero
for the ps, and SDG century-S on the sat.
LANGRISSER
A mythical game created by NCS/Masaya that allows hundreds of troops to
fight on huge battlefields. The 1st episode was called Warsong in the
occident (as Langrisser means "war song" in German); there have been a
lot of sequels: derLangrisser, LG2, LG3, LG4 and LG5. LG Millenium, on
the DC, is a different and shity system. All distributed by Masaya. And
Treco distributed the 1st episode in the US.
GROWLANSER
A good tactical on the PS.
BAHAMUT LAGOON
A fabulous tRPG based on FF Dragons military management. Tell me if you
have got the english version of this game's ROM!
VANDAL HEARTS
The 1st one was a good 3D clone of SF, with some interesting inter-
action with the fields, but quite too easy. VH2 is much better because
it included a system of dual turn battle; The enemy played in the same
time as you; and a few innovations were made on the management of your
magic.
ARC THE LAD
ATL1 as a shity clone of SF2 on the PS1 (nice abbreviations, huh ?).
ATL2 was much better 'cos much longer. Never had a chance to play ATL3
but it seems interesting.
FRONT MISSION
A tRPG that is fantastic just because of the idea: a mech-based tRPG !
One of the best of the genre, because of the huge tactical improvements
made: hits' localisation, gear change...be careful! A lot of FM-license
games were released but they-re not all tRPGs:

< You've forgotten the first tRPG! Yes, it was FireEmblem that
started the Tactical RPG genre. The first two games in the series were
Famicom (8-bit Japanese Nintendo) games, and the next three releases
were Super Famicom (including one that was just released last year).
This was also the first game to feature generational gameplay - your
characters fell in love, got married, had kids, and the kids conti-
nued on with the story/game. Very interesting and in-depth series. A
Nintendo 64 installment is in the works.>
How could I forget...Anyway, I am sure a MD/Genesis FE existed too.

The data screen is like the continue screen except that
you have to be careful of what choice you made:
the O-t" sign means "load"
the t-7" sign means "save"

battle. Be careful that the square on which you place a char
represents a distinctive place on the battle field (see FFT?).
Press X if you want to see the character's status.
