Welcome to the English translation of Strahl.  Please note that this is NOT a
fan translation, but the official translation which appears in the USA release
of the 3DO version.  I take credit only for transcribing it and fixing a few
grammatical errors, and in fact know scarcely any Japanese.  I typed up this
translation because most Saturn gamers do not own a 3DO, and thus are limited
to the Japanese release of Strahl.  The game is fully playable without knowing
the language, but now Saturn enthusiasts can also understand the storyline
while they enjoy this Quick Time Event game.

The game's story is divided into three basic parts, as listed in the table of
contents below.  My notes are in brackets.  On a final note, I am aware that
the 3DO and Saturn versions use completely different visuals for their
introductory cutscenes; however, the story is clearly the same, so I am
confident that the 3DO version's translation is identical (or at least close
enough to still be valid) to the Saturn version's.

I.[1a] Introduction
*******************
Narrator: Alex Hawkfield is an ordinary young man, who lives in a quiet and
peaceful village. One day, he saves an old man, who was nearly dying, at the
entrance to the village.  This is the Creator of the World, who disguises
himself as an old man so that he can travel the world in secret.  The Creator
noticed that Alex possessed the ability to become a world conqueror, and
challenged him with the following words:

Creator of the World: Thou may become king if ye choose.  Dare ye test thy
power?

Narrator: The idea of becoming king captured Alex's imagination.  The Creator
waved his cane, lights filled the air and then enveloped the Creator.  This is
how Alex's long ordeal began.

Creator of the World: Oh child of mortal man, who dares defy the gods, endure
Our test.  Within these seven crystals is sealed the origin of all things.
Acquire them all, and give life to this meaningless world.  But child of mortal
man, forget ye not that the fate of the world lies in thy hands.

II. Game Proper
***************
[At this point, the story branches into three paths, depending on which of the
three crystals you choose first. Each time you acquire a crystal, a line of
text appears; this is the entirety of the story for this part.  The text
translations are grouped according to the three paths.]

A.[2a] Land Path (If you picked the swamp with the giant snake first)

After completing the first test: People are grateful for the abundant land
which allows them to harvest.

After completing the second test: In the lowland, people are beginning to
pasture domestic animals.

After completing the third test: Animals are being used as a means of
transportation.

After completing the fourth test: People gather at markets as their base of
commerce.

After completing the fifth test: The invention of the motor vehicle has made
people's life pleasant.

After completing the sixth test: As means of transportation advances, the city
is developed rapidly.

After completing the seventh test: The highly commercialized city has now been
completed.

B.[2b] Sky Path (If you picked the flaming valley with the golems first)
After completing the first test: People are starting to build their houses on
flat mountain surfaces in order to make a living.

After completing the second test: Windmills are being developed as a power
supply for cities.

After completing the third test: A hot-air balloon has been invented which
allows people to travel outside the city.

After completing the fourth test: Bigger hot-air balloons are used as a major
form of transportation.

After completing the fifth test: The wind becomes a big part of their lives as
more advanced windmills are made.

After completing the sixth test: Huge airships open trade with neighboring
cities.

After completing the seventh test: As architectural technology advances, major
skyscrapers are built.

C.[2c] Water Path (If you picked the snowy land with the dragon first)
After completing the first test: People are starting to live by the water.
Peaceful time prevails.

After completing the second test: People learned to use the force of water in
different ways to ease their life.

After completing the third test: Various kinds of ships have been invented,
and water transportation has started.

After completing the fourth test: The usage of water is growing in their
culture also.  The water fountains are bringing smiles to people's faces.

After completing the fifth test: The Waterworks Bureau has been founded, and a
water tower has become the symbol of the city.

After completing the sixth test: The shipbuilding technique is advanced.  The
ship, named “the city”, is bringing profitable goods across borders.

After completing the seventh test: The city has now become the most advanced
and elegant on the water.

III.[3a] Climax
***************
Creator of the World: Thou hast fared well.  Only one crystal remains.

IV. Endings
***********
[The game boasts to have 48 different endings.  That's way too many plays
through the game for me to undertake, especially since I have very little idea
how to get the different endings.  So for now, I've provided three endings, one
for each path.  If anyone else out there with the English version of the game
should find any additional endings, however, I would be very happy to update
this guide and add them.]

A.[4a] Land Path
Narrator: He became king of the land. The land he ruled brought forth much
fruit and imparted energy to every living thing. It is said this place became a
paradise.

B.[4b] Sky Path
Narrator: He became a celestial, as he had wished.  His body was made one with
the sky, and he now watches over the people and exercises his benevolent power.

C.[4c] Water Path
Narrator: He became the king of the water, and controlled all the water in the
world.  He brought forth springs to animals and plants, rain to crops, gentle
waves to the ocean, and contributed to the world's prosperity.
