the Option screen. This FAQ utilizes the default setup shown above.
( Abbreviations + Command Notation ) -------------------------------------
P / K - Press any Punch / Kick button.
PPP / KKK - Press all three Punch / Kick buttons simultaneouly.
+ - Stands for "and".
/ - Stands for "or".
qcf / qcb - Motion (d,df,f) or (d,db,b) on the joystick.
hcf / hcb - Motion (b,db,d,df,f) or (f,df,d,db,b) on the joystick.
360 - Rotate the joystick in a circle (f,df,d,db,b,ub,u,uf,f).
360s can start and end at any cardinal direction (If you
start at df, end at df.) Ultimately, 360-motions have been
reduced to a 270-motion in games. Thus you can start at f
and rotate (f,df,d,db,b,ub,u) (or the reverse) to get the
same effect.
.. rapidly - Repeat the listed command(s) in a swift succession. ("Press
Punch rapidly" means to swiftly hit any Punch button over
and over.)
Hold - Hold down the indicated direction or button(s) for a
minimum of one full second before releasing.
Charge - Hold the primary indicated direction for a minimum of two
full seconds before performing the following command(s).
When close - Perform the following command(s) when player is near the
opponent.
When far - Perform the following command(s) when player is away from
the opponent.
(movename) - A special move that has no specific name, but is noted in
the character`s movelist for having unique principles or a
command to execute it. Although sometimes this notation
means that I don`t know the real name for the move yet.
* - Indicates additional/follow-up notes/information pertaining
to a specific move, command, or ability. (A "see below".)
(?) - Indicates information that I am not 1oo% sure on at the
moment. Most times this shows up for translations or moves
I haven`t gathered the full properties of yet.

All of the character`s normal attacks (i.e - regular punches and kicks) are
listed within a chart like the one below. Ai Momoyama`s is shown:

The top row shows the position of the character for the attack: Standing,
Standing Close (to the opponent) and Crouching. Essentially, there are two
more attack types, being Jumping Up and Jumping Diagonal. However for this
chart, there is no reason to list them since all air attacks will hit once,
are mid-ranged, and cannot be canceled. (PFX doesn`t even have any special
moves than can performed in the air.)
Along the left side are the six attack strengths. As the chart is read from
left to right, you`ll come in contact with a symbols for each attack type:
O : The attack can be canceled after it hits.
X : The attack can`t be canceled at any time.
* : Indicates additional/follow-up notes to the attack. (A "see below".)
#x : Pertains to what number note the "see below" refers to. This will
always show up after an `*´ is posted.
To the right of the chart is a group of three numbers for each line. Each
number refers to the amount of hits that attack will do in full, in
coordination with the order of the row. (The first number is "STANDING,"
the second "STAND CLOSE," and the last is "CROUCHING".)

( Story Mode ) -----------------------------------------------------------
Arcade mode. Select one of the twelve characters (Maria Christel included
with the code; see "Secrets / Codes" in "Bishoujou 7" section) to go
through the game. All twelve characters must be defeated in 2-out-of-3
rounds. Maria Christel will be the last boss. A FMV is shown to you after
selecting your character and when you defeat Maria for the ending.
Losing against an opponent will bring up a Continue screen, showing a
picture of your beat up player. You will have ten seconds to decide on
whether or not you wish to continue. Pressing Start will activate the
continue, allowing you to start the stage over against the opponent that
defeated you. Pressing the buttons will speed up the counter. Once the
timer reaches 0, continuing is deactivated and the game is over.
Scores made here are added toward the Top 5 ranking screen. If you continue
from a loss, the score you last had will be retained. Even if you change
your character after continuing, you will keep you score.
( Vs. Mode ) -------------------------------------------------------------
Vs. Mode is made for either 1- or 2-players. There are two sections:
- "Taisen" (Competition)
This is standard 2-player Vs. mode. Each player selects a character to
fight 2-out-of-3 rounds. A ranking chart will be shown after each match
to show the number of wins and losses for each character selected.
- "Konpyu-ta-" (Computer)
This is a Battle mode made for 1-player. After selecting your character,
you will select any of the twelve characters to fight against. Like in
"Taisen," a ranking chart of wins/losses will appear after each match.
( Team Play Mode ) -------------------------------------------------------
Team Play Mode is made for either 1- or 2-players. There are two sections:
- "Taisen" (Competition)
This is a 6-on-6 2-player relay mode. Each player selects six characters
in order of who they want to use. Two of the same character can`t be on
the same team. Characters will face off in 1-round matches. The winner
will continue on to fight against the next opponent on the other player`s
team and get energy replenished to their meter.
- "Konpyu-ta-" (Computer)
This is a 6-on-6 1-player relay mode. After selecting six characters for
your team, the CPU will randomly select six characters. Two of the same
character can`t be on the same team. Characters will face off in 1-round

The options screen to change the settings of the game. The modes are as
follows (listed from the top to bottom):
- "Reberu Settei" (Level Setup)
Select the difficulty of the CPU opponents from 1-7; 1 being the easiest,
7 being hardest. 4 is the default.
(Effects: Story Mode, Vs. Mode Computer, Team Play Mode Computer)
- "Taimu Settei" (Time Setup)
Select the amount of time for each round in seconds; 3o, 6o, 9o, or
infinite.
(Effects: Story Mode, Vs. Mode (both), Team Play Mode (both))
- "Handikyappu" (Handicap)
Select the damage ratio of the character from 1-8; 1 making the character
do 5o% less damage, 8 making the character do 5o% more damage. 4 is the
default.
(Effects: Vs. Mode Taisen (both), Team Play Mode (both))
- "Kii Settei" (Key Setup)
Change the button configuration of the punch and kick buttons. There is
also a "Reset" button at the top to place the buttons back in default.
- "Saundo" (Sound)
Select the quality of sound for the game; "sutereo" (Stereo) and
"monoraru" (Monaural).
- "Supi-do Settei" (Speed Setup)
Select the speed that the gameplay flows from 1-3; 1 being the slowest, 3
being the swiftest. 2 is the default.

are listed in the following order:
- Personal Information
Stats about the character; from name analysis, measurements, hobbies, and
the title of their opening animations from Story Mode.
- Colors
Character`s pallete swaps.
- Portrait Costumes
After defeating the 3rd, 6th, and 9th opponent in Story Mode, a large
picture will appear of that character dressed up in alternate clothing.
- Quotes
A listing of quotes the character says after beating an opponent or after
losing to one. There are eight different quotes per character.
- Mini Movelist
A brief listing of all the character`s special moves and throws.
The following three sections listed after the Mini Movelist will take every
normal and special move, breaking it down to note all properties and key
elements that pertain to them. Attacks are listed in six catagories showing
its information:
jp: Name of the special move in Japanese, as it`s written out Roumaji.
en: The English translation of each move.
sp: Speech the characters say during the attack.
cm: Joystick command and button input needed to perform the move.
ht: Total number of hits the move scores. It`s divided into three parts
depending on the button strength: Weak 1 / Mid 1 / Strong 1. (Weak
is LP/LK, Mid is MP/MK, Strong is HP/HK.) The number that follows is
the number of hits for that version. ("Weak 1 / Mid 2" would be the
attack does 1 hit with the LP button, and 2 hits with MP.)
ds: Description of the move.

- While Ai is eating, she is unable to move or attack.
- Ai can immediately cancel into the Banana Tabe after throwing the
opponent with the Bear Hug or Kamikami Crash. She can do a MP
version and get away with enough time to recovery before being hit
with a counterattack. Though the window is small. If Ai`s about to
throw them into the corner, best to do an LP version.
- .. I know the game`s full of minute sexual references and innuendos,
but a 14-year old that loves .. bananas? Hmmmm.

- Marin is 99.8% invincible from the beginning animation frame of the
Blue Sailor Upper and all through her ascension. Meaning she`ll
pass through projectiles (ala Shou Ryuu Ken in SFII), have advantage
against other physical attacks, and gain counterattack properties
with ease. Where`s that .2% vulnerability come from? If the opponent
is close enough to Marin, they can throw her in her beginning
animation as she`s winding up to uppercut. Normal and projectiles
can`t hit her there, but she can be thrown. Although it it a very
small window between her stance and the start of her ascension, so
the throw has to be perfect.
- Once Marin reaches the peak of her uppercut and descends, she can be

of the easiest and most annoying pokes. As long as the opponent

thus you can poke/combo the opponent across the screen. Once they
get in the corner, Ryouko`s recovery animation returns. But you can
simply throw them or use the HK Katatataki to get on the other side
and continue all over.

- This move does no damage and can be blocked.
- There is no difference between the PPP and KKK version.
- A majority of the opponent`s body must be in front of the door when
it appears. If it hits, the opponent will be made to hold two
buckets of water. This is a form of punishment sometimes used in
Japanese schools.
- While the opponent is holding the water, they won`t be able to move
or attack for three seconds. Shizuka can move freely and attack the
frozen opponent, but she won`t be able to throw them.
- If the opponent is doing a special move when the door appears behind
them, they won`t be caught.
- If Shizuka is hit while the door is appearing, it won`t be able to
freeze the opponent. Even if they are fully in front of it.
- In theory, Shizuka can freeze the opponent forever. Since you only
have to hold PPP / KKK for at least a second, she`s able to summon
another door as soon as the previous one appears. In fact, before
the `.. sai!´ of her speech is heard, she`ll be able to do the
attack again.

- This attack is noted because of a fairly interesting property behind
it. The attack normally hits a total of two times. But against most
small- and medium-sized opponents, only the first hit will connect.
The opponent will slide back from the first hit, putting them out of
range of the secondary one. Because of this, the game keeps the
opponent frozen in hit stun animation since it thinks that both of
the (roundhouse) hits should connect. Since they don`t, Shizuka will
recover faster than normal (since the second hit will whiff and she
returns to stance in the next frame) and can catch the opponent with
a free attack! This is especially powerful against opponents like
Marin and Minami where Shizuka can do the (roundhouse) and cancel
the first hit immediately into the Sokode Tattenasai as they`re in
stun. Allowing Shizuka to repeat this for an easy infinite. (Because
of how small she is, this trick will not work against Yawara. You
won`t be able to hit her with the (roundhouse) while she`s stunned.)

Yawara`s stance makes her incredibly small against her opponents. So much
in fact that most high-range attacks just pass right over her. She`s even
shorter than Ai because of this. It`s insane the number of attacks that she
can avoid by just standing, especially for people like Minami and Sorami.

( Attacking ) ------------------------------------------------------------
Much like many Capcom games, `Pretty Fighter X´ adopts the 6-button attack
system: three punches and three kicks. Normally, kick attacks do more damage
than a punch. However, they are slower in coming out than punches.
The further you move down the row of buttons, the more damage an attack will
do. Light Punch/Kick (LP/LK) are extremely swift moves, but they are also
minuscule in doing damage. Medium Punch/Kick (MP/MK) are intermediates, each
doing an average of both speed and strength. Hard Punch/Kick (HP/HK) are the
attacks that do the most damage of all normal attacks, but are the slowest
in execution.
Using the different strength buttons when performing the character`s special
moves can sometimes result in significant property changes. For example,
Jyuri Akasaka`s Guruguru Punch move will hit once when done with LP. But if
you do it with MP or HP, it will still hit once but the move will knock the
opponent down.
( Guarding ) -------------------------------------------------------------
In Japan, what the Americans call "blocking" is called "guarding" instead.
Same command: hold away from the opponent as you are being attacked. It`s
only possible to guard while on the ground, and that can be done in two
ways:
- Holding back on the controller will guard against both high attacks and
jumping attacks.
- Low attacks are guarded by holding down-back on the controller.
Since Jumping attacks are considered to be mid-level attacks, they cannot be
guarded by holding down-back. Not all crouching attacks are considered low
attacks though. Some can be guarded while standing, thus they are considered
to be high-level. Crouching attacks that glide against the ground are
usually the low-level ones that must be guarded by using down-back.
When a character is in the air, they are unable to guard. Even if both
characters are in the air at the same time, neither will be able to guard
against an attack.
There are some moves that cannot be guarded against. Those usually include
throws (those done when close and pressing b / f + MP / MK / HP / HK) and
command throws (i.e - Keiko Konno`s Oshiri Penpen). The only way to avoid
those is to just stay out of their range to avoid the grab.
Though guarding does protect the character from harm, it isn`t a fullproof
shield. If you protect yourself from a brick thrown at you by use of your
arms, you`re still going to feel some pain from the collision it makes
against your body. The same principle goes for certain attacks against the
player that still remove damage even while they are guarding. This is called
"guard damage". Guard Damage is minuscule energy loss whenever a character
guards against an attack that`s not standard (i.e - a fireball or command
motion uppercut). Guarding hissatsu waza (special moves) still do tick away
at the life gauge. A loss of one point of damage for each number of hits is
inflicted. (If you guard an attack that hits three times, the character will
sustain three damage.) You don`t take damage from guarding against normal
moves, such as standing punches and jumping kicks.
( Throwing ) -------------------------------------------------------------
Throws are unblockable moves that each character has at least one of. There
are two types of throws: normal and command. The motion for a normal throw
is to press back or forward + MP / MK / HP / HK when you are close to the
opponent. Some characters may have two different normal throws; one with a
Punch button and the other with a Kick (like Kris Shiratori). Others may not
have a MK / HK throw, like Marin Aoki.
Command throws are extra character throws that deal more damage than normal
throws, but require an extended motion than b / f + an attack button. It can
be a controller rotation or even a charge command before the button input.
A total of 4 characters possess command throws: Ai Momoyama, Keiko Konno,
Ryouko Kiori and Yawara Yamabuki.
Not too surpringly, `Pretty Fighter X´ contains an inexpensive fighting
engine. Because of this and thus being similar to SNK`s MVS engine for `King
Of Fighters,´ the ability to combo a throw is possible. For example with
Keiko Konno, if she is close to the opponent when hitting them with a
standing MP, you can cancel the attack into her Oshiri Penpen by immediately
motioning (f,d,df + P) on the controller. The throw will connect with no way
for the opponent to avoid it since it was linked into the attack. A highly
beneficial way for you to score big damage if this tactic is mastered. Not
all of the opponent`s attacks can easily link into a command throw though.
Any exceptions are listed in that character`s section for their notes.
Unlike other games, no one is able to air throw or "Tech Hit" (escape) out
of a throw.
( Life Gauge ) -----------------------------------------------------------
The life gauges are located at the top of the screen on either side of the
stage timer. Player 1 has the left side while Player 2 is the right. Each
player`s life gauge bar begins with a full 100 units of life (easily known
since a perfect at the end of a round shows "LIFE 100"). During the trial of
the battle, the character may take damage and loses life points. The reddish
area shows how much life has been lost. Once all the life points have
dissolved, the character is defeated and the round goes to the winner.
If the time runs out, the character with the most life wins the round. If
the bars are equal, the match will be considered a draw and an extra round
will begin.
Ai Momoyama, Keiko Konno, and Maria Christel all possess moves that allow
them to recover life.
( Attack Cancels ) -------------------------------------------------------
Attack Cancels are is the mainstream combo engine. Characters can link in
special moves after normal attacks via what is called a "2-in-1 method." So
you can have Kris perform a crouching punch, then roll the controller in a
"qcf" (quarter circle forward / d,df,f) motion and press punch again to 2-
in-1 into the Choushinki Flash. Both hits will connect after each other,
resulting in a 2-hit combo.

- Aomori (Marin Aoki`s stage)
Marin`s stage is set cliffside of the Sea Of Japan, similar to Haohmaru`s
stage in `Shin Samurai Spirits: Haoumaru Jigoku Hen´ (Samurai Shodown
II). (This scene is derived from the legendary "Battle at Ganryu Isle"
between Musashi Miyamoto and Kojirou Sasaki. For those also familiar with
Pocket Monsters/Pokemon, "Musashi" and "Kojirou" are also the names of
the main bad guys from Rocket-dan/Team Rocket.) Waves crash against the
rocks to splash up every other second and seagulls fly in the sky.
- Chiba (Sorami Shizaki`s stage)
Sorami`s stage is set inside of Haneda Airport in Tokyo. (Since Chiba is
a prefecture of Tokyo, it`s basically considered the same place.) Chairs,
plants, and cigerette bins cover the interior. Every once in a while, a
man in a red shirt will pop up in two locations from behind the plants.
Planes on the runway are seen behind the windows in the background, and
one of them moves out in the beginning of the round.
- Fukuoka (Yawara Yamabuki`s stage)
Yawara`s stage is set inside of a stadium; seemingly a baseball field.
Advertising names are seen along the perimeter ("Tohiba"?!). The dome is
open to see the sky in the middle. A large "FIGHT!" billboard with Marin
poses on it is upon the far back wall.
- Hiroshima (Ai Momoyama`s stage)
Ai`s stage is set on a pier beside the river. The skyline is in the
background, along with a destroyed four-story building (apparently a
reference to WWII when Roosevelt dropped the atomic bomb on the city). A
yacht is on the river and sails off in the beginning of the round.
- Kouchi (Shizuka Minakami`s stage)
Shizuka`s stage is set on a cape overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Mountains
can be seen in the background. A statue of Kobo Daishi (a Buddhist priest
who founded the Shingon sect of Buddhism) is on the right of the stage.
- Kyoto/Kyoutou (Ryouko Kiori`s stage)
Ryouko`s stage is set on the wooden porch of a temple. A second temple is
seen in the background, built high above a forest canopy. Mountains cover
the background, along with the orange sky of the setting sun. The sun
moves downward slightly until it reaches the top of the mountains. (And
for some strange reason, the sun resets at the top for each round.)
- Nagoya (Keiko Konno`s stage)
Keiko`s stage is set in front of a pachinko (Japanese pinball) arcade.
The doors to the arcade automatically open if a character passes in
front. You can then see the people and rows of machines inside. The large
vertical red banners on the right of the doors read "Shin Dai Ireka" (New
Counter Replacements), and the smaller white signs on the ground read
"??" (??).
- Niigata (Tokiko Tsuchiya`s stage)
Tokiko`s stage is set in front of her restaurant, the Skyhawk. Through
the yellow-tinted windows you can see the inside.
- Okinawa (Maria Christel`s stage)
Maria`s stage is set in front of her cathedral. A stone wall covered in
roses is to the left. Atop the wall is a lion statue that nods its head
and opens his mouth at times. (The lion is the same image that appears
for Maria`s crouching HP attack.)
- Osaka/Oosaka (Minami Midorikawa`s stage)
Minami`s stage is set atop of a mack truck`s trailer roof. Behind the
large orange "Dotonbori" neon sign are the streets of Osaka lit up with
numerous signs. (Dotonbori is a real location in Osaka: a large scale
downtown along the south bank of the Dotonbori-gawa Canal. Osaka is known
as the gastronomists` town, and thus the entire area of Dotonbori is
thronged with an unbelievable number of restaurants and amusement
facilities.)
- Sapporo (Kris Shiratori`s stage)
Kris`s stage is set on the snowy rooftop of a clock tower. A large clock
appears in the middle of the stage, showing the time that is set on the
Saturn`s internal clock. (If you pause the game for a while, the clock
hands will be frozen. After you unpause, each of the hands spring into
position of the new time.) The background is filled with other buildings,
including a "HOTEL."
- Tokyo/Toukyou (Jyuri Akasaka`s stage)
Jyuri`s stage is set on a stage in the middle of a dance club. Rainbow
colored blinking lights line the walls and the ceiling. Silhouettes of
other people are seen in the background. A large "FIGHT!" billboard with
Marin poses on it is upon the far back wall. (Akasaka, Jyuri`s surname,
is also the name of a district in Tokyo dedicated to having a large
variety of hostess bars and geisha clubs.)

- A nice chunk of added info in this version actually. Standard attack info
and charts were placed in the characters` sections to give details on
canceling properties. I also added some Game Shark codes that were found
on this Japanese site, so felt those were worthy of being in here. The
rest of the name translations are done too. I haven`t finished with the
story, but more of the quotes have been added. Some of the translations
may seem a little messed up, but I`ll go over them again in time.

- I honestly don`t know why I made this FAQ this huge. It`s over 8 years
old and I highly doubt there is anyone left that still plays this game
hardcore. In fact, if by chance there -is- someone out that that does,
drop me an email to at least tell me. I`d be interested to find out. And
to play you since my Shizuka and Yawara are l33t. But considering with a
populous of maybe 1oo people that actually own this game (and 2% of that
still play it), it might come in handy. Someone had to eventually take
the time to break down this game to simplest form and make a FAQ one day.
Might as well be me. I planned on making just this one, but a MiniFAQ
will accompany since this document is fairly large. I probably won`t make
a ComboFAQ since the game possesses little 2-in-1 and chain capabilities.

I first saw this game back in high school in the import review section of
GameFan. I don`t remember what issue it was, but that`t not important. I do
remember that I wanted this game badly. What`s not to like about a game
composed of beautiful scantily clad big-breasted anime girls fighting one
another? I had the chance to get it at Anime Central 1998, but passed it up.
So recently I found it on eBay and finally got it. Good god, what that hell
was I thinking? I suppose I shouldn`t bash it though for it had to be pretty
good for its time. But now, it not anything I wanted it to be. Sadly. And
since this was before the era of practice modes and picture galleries, it
makes the replay value considerably worse. However it`s still a classic and,
again, filled with beautiful scantily clad big-breasted anime girls fighting
one another. It should be remade for Dreamcast. Then I`ll be happy.
