                    Virtual On
           Temjin operating manual v.1.0
                       By

I. Introduction

Temjin is the most all-rounded VR (Virtuaroid) in the game.  It is
fast, well armored and has a set of good weapons.  It can fight very
well in close -- medium range combat.  It has an advantage to almost
all other VR except Temjin itself, Raiden and Dorkas.  If you are
looking for a VR that able you to get familiar to this game, Temjin is
the definite choice.

II. Weapons

Temjin has 3 weapons -- the beam rifle, the bomb and the beam sword.
The proper usage of these three weapons is necessary for players to
get out all the potential of Temjin.

1. Beam rifle

The main weapon of Temjin.  It does good damage and has some degree of
homing ability.  It never runs out of ammo so you can use it whenever
you like.

Standing or walking beam rifle is a single shot and it does more
damage than dashing shots.  Standing shot is useful in forcing enemy
to run(dash) because slow VR cannot escape by walking and quick VR
players tend to dash when they see a shot coming.  This gives you
initiative in the next attack(In this game, the one dash later has an
absolute advantage over the opponent).

Side dash beam rifle is 4 consecutive shots, each does less damage
than standing one, but if 4 shots all hit they do more damage than
standing shot.  This move is very effective when your opponent
"freeze" at medium range.  Sometime it can be used to find your
opponent(All dash attacks automatically center your opponent on the
screen).  But you have to mind that the freeze time after a dash
attack is quite long in Temjin so don't use it before your opponent
dash.

Forward dash beam rifle is a great move.  It gives 2 big beam shots
that each one does less damage than standing one but the shots are
very fast and have great homing ability.  Some slow VR (Raiden,
Dorkas) cannot dash away from this shot and most VR will fall if both
shots are hit, giving you a chance of "okizame".

Backward dash beam rifle is useless.  It is 2 small, slow shots and
does not home well.  Never use it(actually, you should never dash back
because enemy shots will have more time and distance to track you).

Jump beam rifle does not have much use because it is slow, does not
track well and does little damage.  Moreover the freeze time after
jump attack is deadly so don't use it.

Crouching beam rifle is fast and has great homing ability.  It fires
at an angle of 45 degrees so it can be use as anti-air defense or for
attacking the enemy hiding behind obstacle.

At close range(double lock on), Temjin's rifle can be used to thrust
your enemy.  It is the fastest close range attack in the game and
cause good damage(not as much as beam sword though).

2. Bomb

Some think that bomb is useless because it does little damage but it
is not true.  In fact, bomb is the most important weapon of Temjin.
Temjin's bomb can neutralize all weapons except Dorkas's Phalanx and
Belgdor's Napalm(Raiden's laser can pass through the bomb, but after
the bomb it will not cause damage any more).  So it can act as a
barrier before you.  Since you will not get any damage by your bomb
you can also hide in the explosion of bomb than set up the next
attack, mostly forward dash beam rifle.  A direct hit of bomb also
causes great damage.

Standing, walking, dashing bomb will explode immediately when it hit
something like ground, obstacle or opponent VR.  But crouching bomb is
different.  It will explode after some time(about 2 second) but if it
hit your enemy, it explodes immediately.

3. Beam sword

Temjin's beam sword has 2 forms, one is slashing and the other is beam
cutter.  At close range(double lock on)  Temjin will slash his
opponent with his sword.  He will first dash forward and when at
proper range, slash from left to right.  So it is easier to hit your
opponent at the left hand side than at the right.  It causes great
damage.  You can also slash while crouching.  Crouch beam sword can
evade enemy's close range attack like tongfer but it cause less damage
than standing one.

At long range your beam sword will give you a beam cutter.  It can
neutralize many kinds of weapon(e.g. Belgdor's missile)  but it causes
very little damage.  Not very useful IMO.

III. Basic tactics

1.  Offense

One basic rule in VO: Don't dash attack unless you are sure that your
attack will hit.  Missed dash attack will cause great disadvantage
because you freeze after a dash attack.  Moreover Temjin's freeze time
is long compare with other VR.

Temjin player should use bomb often.  Since enemy fire cannot pass
through the explosion, you can gain the attack initiative in the next
attack.  After a bomb, fire one or two beams to force your enemy to
run.  Watch it's moving direction.  If he dash and attack, immediately
dash in a direction that is vertical to your enemy's path:

     E--------->
^
|
|
|
Y        E:enemy   Y:you

You can fire beam rifle during your dash.  Most of the time it will
hit.  But if the distance between you and your enemy is too long or
there is obstacle between, use bomb instead.  This is the basic attack
pattern of Temjin at mid-range.  Repeat this pattern and wait for
chance of close range attack.

When you have get close to your enemy, a double lock on will appear
and some of your weapon charge meter will become yellow in colour,
indicating that your weapon is now ready for a close range attack.
Temjin should always use beam sword at this time(except you are facing
Raiden since his laser comes out faster than your sword).  However,
not every attack can hit.  What should you do if you missed?  The
following flow chart can help you:

You slash
   |
   V                 Yes
Did you hit him? --------------> Enemy fall down, continue "okizame"
   |
   | No
   V
Does your enemy near to you(e.g. He guarded your sword)?
   |             | Yes
   |No           |-----> Crouch cancel bomb, then dash away
   |
   V
Dash away and bomb

Besides dashing away, you can try to jump cancel your sword, so that
you can catch your enemy again for another attack.

If your enemy felled down, you should do a okizame on him.  Okizame is
Japanese, it means "attack on the raising enemy".  It is a VF2 jargon.
I use this word since I can't find another word suitable for this.

Temjin's okizame is simple.  Just throw a bomb onto your enemy and
watch him getting up.  The bomb forces him to run since he will get
hit if he stay inside the explosion or attack back.   If your enemy
runs, dash vertically to him and attack.

2.  Defense

Temjin is fast.  He can evade most attack by walking.  Dashing is used
to evade those weapons with great homing ability (e.g., Viper's
homing, Belgdor's missile).  Bomb is the most useful in defense since
it blocks most attack.  If you are forced to dash, always cancel the
dash since you can quickly fire back at your opponent.

If you are being attack in your freeze time after a dash attack, You
can try to jump to avoid getting hit.  For 2 reasons:

1.  Jumping of temjin is quick and can evade weapons with low homing
ability.  Even Temjin's beam rifle cannot hit you.
2.  Temjin does not fall down easily.  So if you are standing, you
will get more hits than jumping.  If you jump, you will get only 1 hit
and you fell down.

Other stuffs

1.  Temjin has a special move called Gilding Ram.  Method is jump,
then at the highest point, push both sticks toward and press both
triggers.
2.  You can dash immediately during raising.  Method is place one(or
both) stick in the direction you want to dash and press the dash
button while you are downed.  This dash is not a ordinary dash.  If
you fire rifle during this dash, it will give four big beams that
cause great damage!  Great for hitting enemy that is doing okizame
before you.

I think that's all for Temjin.  Next time I will write a FAQ about
Raiden, the strongest VR in the game!
