Spectral Souls is a great game released by Idea Factory in Japan and
translated by NIS America for the US market. The original game was Spectral
Souls 2 for the PS2 (JP only). The PSP version removes the level cap and
apparently adds an extra dungeon.
While I have easily spent over 250 hours with this game (PSP and PS2
versions), I have not uncovered all of it's secrets (or finished all the
post-game dungeons, for that matter).

OK, there are three major endings to the game, one for each army. However,
there is a variation on the Roses ending that is known as the "True" ending,
the one that is considered canon by Idea Factory. The following steps will
get you the True Ending.
Any places I have not reached in the English version are written with their
Japanese name in romaji within brackets [ ]. I will try and replace them
with the official English name as I go through each step.
This sequence is compiled and cross-checked from several sources. It is the
route I followed when I got the true route in the PS2 version. There is still
the possibility it is incorrect. If so, I will fix it as soon as possible.
In other words, use at your own risk!
NL = Neverland Army
SA = Simba Army
Rozess = Rozess group
Recruiting optional characters has some leeway. I put in where you can first
get them. You must have recruited every character to get the True ending!
See the character section for details on how to get each character.
[walkthrough begins]
Start of game: Go through the three required missions with Niaz, Corwin, and
Marx.
1) NL: Go to King Sorfin, choose to dispatch troops to Golden. Fight the
battle at the Mirabello Grasslands (win <75 turns)
2) SA: Go to Saulve Bastion, choose to fight. Win the first fight in under
99 turns. Win the second fight (destroy all opponents) in under 100
turns (see next section for walkthrough fo this battle)
3) NL: Win the fight at Saulve Bastion.
*** HP1: Play as Simba. Fight the battle at Armana Castle.
1) NL: Go to King Sorfin (Hiro joins). Go to Wilgeine Keep (Tal joins).
Fight at the Cactus Desert (win <100 turns). Fight at Marengo
Fortress.
2) SA: Go to Armana Castle (Leila and Trevor join). Choose the forest route.
Recruit Himika. Clear Fell Forest in under 100 turns. Clear Medina
Ruins (defeat Hiro).
*** HP2: Play as Neverland. Fight the battle at Ayeina Grasslands.
1) NL: King Sorfin (Igraine joins), choose to suppress the rebel army.
Fight at Lithanit. Recruit Kurt.
2) RA: In Varanoire, choose to go meet Cuo (Cuo and Fredrika join). Finish
the rest of the Rozess battles.
3) SA: (Nora joins) Choose to take the detour. Complete Lapis Valley in
under 75 turns. Clear Mulder Fort north gate in under 150 turns.
Clear the cellar in under 200 turns. Recruit Yamu Ku.
4) NL: Finish the North Woods and Markinson Fortress battles.
*** HP3: Play as Rozess or Simba.
IMPORTANT! You MUST start with NL and choose the sea route before
doing any of the other armies' battles!
1) NL: In King Sorfin, choose the sea route. Fight the Shurak Sea
battle, keeing Levi alive (Levi joins). Fight at Varanoir, but DO
NOT KILL Laemillan!
2) Rozess: Fight at Kazaph Forest, then go to Neipos. Fight the first battle,
but make sure at least 3 civilians survive and the battle lasts at
least 150 turns! Win the second battle (Mick joins) and then go
to Dupen and win in under 150 turns.
3) SA: Go to Armana Castle (Zhang Khan joins). Choose the false retreat
option. Win the next battle by killing all the enemies, not using
the exit. Finish the series of battles.
*** HP4: Rozess or Simba
1) SA: Visit Armana Castle. Play the first battle. Go to Marchuk (Scarface
joins). Choose "Invade the De Argo Islands" when prompted.
2) NL: At King Sorfin, choose the desert route. Finish the battle sequence.
Recruit Rosette and Nell.
3) SA: Complete their remaining battles (Jed joins).
4) Rozess: Go to Varanoire (Yen joins). Complete their battles.
*** HP5: Neverland
1) SA: At Warrence castle, choose to go the Gaugabur route. Complete their
battles.
2) Rozess: Clear their battles. Choose "Stay behind" when prompted.
3) NL: Complete their battles.
*** HP6: Choose Neverland (Armana Castle) or Rozess
1) Rozess: Go to Beminad Forest. Clear Castle Town Faeris, Assilia
Grasslands, Gattzo, and then Mountain Range, in that order.
2) NL: Finish their battles, choosing the Castle Town Faeris route when
prompted.
3) SA: Finish their battles, choosing the Shiring route when prompted.
*** HP7: Neverland or Rozess
1) SA: Finish their battles (Ankrauser joins).
2) NL: Finish their battles (Rose joins).
3) Rozess. Finish their battles. Go to Forgotten Hill (Garnet rejoins).
Make sure you recruit Shell!
*** HP8: You should be forced to use Rozess if you did everything right so far.
Clear as far as you are permitted in the Otherworld Gate and recruit Shiro
before proceeding! Failure to do so will deny you the true ending!
1) Finish all battles (linear sequence). You should have 7 battles at the port
instead of 6 as usual.
a) Second half of the Saulve Bastion fight before HP 1
1) Prep for the battle by buying a Sparta sword for Naiz, a Bracelet for Niaz
and Corwin, and a Mystic for Corwin (sell other stuff to get enough money, but
NOT grass. Sell Herbs or Ore if you have any). Level up the Sparta and Mystic
to 3 each with the EP from the first battles.
2) In the first battle, try and have Niaz and Corwin kill most of the enemy,
although make sure you stay under 100 turns.
3) When you start the second battle, move Marx to the side of the battlefield
that he starts on, so that Hans has to chase him to kill him. Move Dargen
so that Anderson can't get to him in a single turn. Leave Niaz where he is,
and heal him with Corwin if you have to. Move Corwin far enough to the side so
that he can target Niaz with a healing spell next turn.
4) On the enemy turn, Anderson will charge Niaz and attack with an attack or
two. Hans should go after Marx, but if Marx is at full HP he should
barely survive the attacks.
5) Next turn, Niaz should unload everything on Anderson but KEEP 6 AP to move
to the the side of the battlefield to his right (where Corwin and Dragen
are headed). Move him so that Anderson can just barely reach him. Move Dargen
and Corwin down the narrow passage toward the portal, but keep Corwin within
healing range of Niaz (he'll probably have to heal Niaz at this point).
6) Next turn, Hans will kill Marx, and Anderson will beat on Niaz again.
Move down the narrow passage such that your characters look like this:
|C| Corwin
| |
|D| Dragen
|N|__ Niaz
|
Now Anderson will position himself at the front end of your formation. Each
round, beat on him with Niaz, heal Niaz with Dargen (grass or use revive if
necessary), and heal both Dargen and Niaz with Corwin. You should be able to
hit Anderson with an Icicle Edge every once in a while as well (Wind Shear +
Ice combo).
7) When Niaz builds up to Aura Blade, which shouldn't take long, do a chain
attack with Dargen (Purify), Corwin (Icicle Edge) and then Niaz (Aura Blade +
any other attacks you have AP for). You'll probably finish off Anderson.
8) Now you need to repeatedly use Corwin's Wind Shear and Aqua attack (lvl 1
special) to take out as many enemy soldiers and archers as possible. It
shouldn't be hard, as they are probably packed in a tight bunch behind where
Anderson was. Use Niaz and Dargen if possible to hit the mage with chains and
specials, as he has a lot of HP. You will probably need to still heal with
Corwin and Dargen. This is now a race against the turn clock. Also, make sure
you don't group such that he can hit all three characters with his dark spell,
as it has a cross-shaped area of effect. Try and keep Dargen and Niaz next to
each other so he targets them, as they have a lot of HP.
Keep trying, as this worked for me 4/6 times I tried it (the other two I ran
out of turns).

b) Battle against Hiro during Historical Point 2
Prep work: Make sure every character has at least a Bracelet for armor, and
preferably an advanced weapon. Do runs through the first three levels of the
Otherworld Gate if you need money or EP. Try to have all your characters at
least level 10.
The goal of this battle is to down Hiro without killing all the other enemy
soldiers. The enemies will not attack you unless you get within their attack
range, so the easiest way to make sure Hiro is not the last one standing is to
ignore (and stay away from) the soldier closest to the corner here:
Kill all the other soldiers without getting within 5 squares of Hiro. Arrange
your group so that she will charge one person and everyone else can surround
her in one turn. Don't group two characters side-by-side, as her scythe attack
will nail both of them. Try not to group anyone such that her Flamethrower
attack can get more than two people as well.
Then, unload everything you can on her each turn, using Corwin to Heal whoever
she targets that turn. You may loose a person or two, but you should be able
to defeat her. Make sure you are using Chain attacks for the damage bonus!
STR: Strength - helps determine how much damage you do (contributes to ATT)
END: Endurance - used to determine how many HP you get when you level up.
Also plays a small role in determining your DEF.
IMPORTANT: The HP effect is NOT retro-active!
AGL: Agility - Determines how fast your turn comes up in battle, as well as
contributing to AVD. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STAT in the
game for every character!!!!!
INT: Intelligence - determines the power of your spells and defense against
enemy spells. Influences both MAG and MDF.
LUK: Luck - seems to play a role in a lot of things, but it is suspected to
help with drop rate, critical rate, chance of avoiding status
effects, and probably steal chance
Compound stats: These are determined by equipment + stat contribution
ATT: Attack = more damage with non-magic attacks
DEF: Defense = take less damage when hit by non-magic attacks
AVD: Avoid = greater chance to dodge enemy attacks
MAG: Magic = more effective spells
MDF: Magic Defense = less damage or effect from enemy spells
Other stats:
Move: number of squares you can move in one turn
Jump: how much of a difference between heights your character can jump
AP: The all-important number. Every action on the battlefield takes AP to
perform. This is influenced by equipment and promotions, NOT character
stats.
-----
b) "Potential" abilities:
There are a list of these in the manual for the game. These are received at
different levels depending on the character.
A few characters get different potentials if they hold off certain
promotions until you get a certain potential (specifically, Hiro should not
do her second promotion until she gets Accelerate at level 46).
* = These characters can use both Swords and Greatswords. They can use
skills in either type of slot with either type of weapon (i.e. They can use
a Greatsword skill with a Sword equipped and vice versa).
-----
g) "Hidden" Characters:
This section is for characters that are not automatically added to your forces
during the true ending plotline. They usually require you play an extra map
that you may or may not have to find using the Search command.
* * *
NOTE: I am assuming that you have cleared all Battle Points and all floors of
the Otherworld Gate before you follow the directions below.
How to find: After the first Historical Point, clear the first three levels of
the Otherworld Gate with both armies. A new location will open up in Galena,
called Armana Castle Woods. Clear the battle and then go to Lito, where she
will join. (Simba)
Commentary: Himeka is a pretty good dagger-fighter. She also comes with the
all-important Steal skill, which is the only way to get this skill for the
Simba Army. The "Accelerate" potential is icing on the cake.
--
Name: Yaku Mu
Weapon Type: Staff
Starting Level: 15
How to find: (After HP2 and before HP3) In Golden, there is a map "Golden Area
Forest" (it's near the middle of the Golden area, kind of southwest of the
lake right in the middle). Clear it and Yaku Mu will join after the battle.
(Simba)
Commentary: Average character at best. High HP, and one of the only staff
users that is decent in melee combat (there are a lot of unique high level
melee staves). Poor AGL means I never really used him.
--
Name: Kurt
Weapon Type: Spear
Starting Level: 15
How to find: (Between HP2 and HP3) Clear Battle Point 1 for the Neverland Army.
Obtain imformation in Nivea about where to find Brook Valley. Use the Search
feature in the Guild to discover it. Enter and fight the battle, but do not
kill Kurt. Kurt must survive the battle. He will join after the battle.
(Neverland)
Commentary: The fact that he can ignore height restrictions when moving is a
great benefit in certain maps. Overall solid character.
How to find: (Between HP4 and HP5) Have cleared all available Battle Points
with the Neverland Army. Obtain location in Helhanpol for the Decayed
Ruins. It should be in the Valhalla area, which is the most northwest
territory you can reach (the same one as houses the Goblin Tower) Rosette
and Nell will join after you clear that map. (Neverland)
Commentary: Very good character, and the best thief in the game. Only way
to get the Steal skill for the Neverland forces. Also their only
shortsword user.
--
Name: Nell
Weapon Type: Staff
Starting Level: 25
How to find: See Rosette's description. They join together. (Neverland)
Commentary: Pretty good mage, but Light and Dark never seem as good as the
elemental skills, and the components for the level 3 and 4 skills are a
pain to get (especially Dark).
How to find: (Between HP7 and HP8) If following the True or Rozess route,
search just under [eikusueria] lake for a new battle point. Clear it and
she will join you. Note, Garnet must still be alive and well. (Rozess)
Commentary: Not bad, but starts at level 1 in the second-to-last chapter of
the game! She suffers due to the fact that she is a breaker user but
has low strength and could really use a staff to be a good mage. There
are some good spellcaster breakers late in the synthesis list, however.
--
Name: Shiro
Weapon Type: Glove
Starting Level: 1
How to find: You must have completed the requirements for the True Ending, or
you will not be able to find the Nameless Temple!!!
(After HP8) Have cleared 24 floors of the Otherworld Gate.
Search for the Nameless Temple in the [Kaiserhorn] area (northern portion
of the mainland). It is on the peak of the lowest of the four left-most
mountains, which are arragned as such:
/\
/\ /\
/\ <----search at the peak of this mountain!
Commentary: Very good character, but again, starts at level 1 and is found in
the last chapter of the game. Recommend use for post-game only. Has
special weapon and armor piece that only it can use, which have incredible
stats!
These skills are formed from the special skills of specific characters. Like
the usual combo skills, they are created when one (or more) charcters uses the
hold command to set up a particular skill, and then another character uses the
complimentary skill as listed below.
Note: You cannot have other skills between the components of a combo!
At present, any name designated by a * indicates a translation of the Japanese
name. These will be replaced with the English names as they become known. The
number after the character's name indicates which level of special skill is
used, so even if you don't recognize the name, the number is accurate.
Dark Bracelet -> Holy Bracelet -> Dark Bracelet (etc.)
Rusty Shield -> AEGIS
Magic Frame -> Resist Frame
Other register-able armor: [Sterling Bracelet]

When you finish the last battle in the regular game, it will prompt you to
make a Clear Save. If you then use that clear save, you can start a new
game with the following bonuses:
PP in new game = total amount you end with (unused) + total of all character
levels, divided evenly between each army.
GP and EP in new game = total amount you ended with (unused) plus 10000GP and
1000EP clear bonus, divided evenly between each army.
Items are randomly divided between the armies, and determined at the time of
the clear save (so you would have to fight the last battle again to
redistribute if you don't like the arrangement).
The synthesis chart is filled in further as a bonus.
Anything registered at the end of the game stays registered, and is available
to every army.
Profile and Gallery are carried over.
All Auto Skills are lost but each item that comes with an Auto Skill has the
skill attached again (at level 1) just like it was brand new.
