2. Introduction
===============
Hey there! Thanks for clicking, and may you enjoy your visit here. :)
First off, I should note that is by no means a normal Character guide. I'm not
going to detail backstory or aesthetic characteristics of any of the 22
selectable characters in the game, so you'll need to look elsewhere for such
info. I'm also not going to explain how to build chains, nor will I go over the
controls or basic game mechanics. The game itself is good enough at explaining
that. Besides, if you actually own this game, you likely already know how to
play, given that you most likely imported it. For those that don't, there's a
Training mode ingame, and the manual does a good job of explaining the basic
functions, assuming you can read Japanese.
What I will do is detail exactly how the characters stack up against each
other. This guide will specifically deal with Fever mechanics, as character
choice makes for no difference in any other mode, aesthetics aside. I will also
explain the scoring mechanics of the game, going over how chain points and
garbage amounts are calculated, as well as any relevant/similar information.
So, without further ado, let us begin. (Feel free to scroll through the
version history here. :P)
==================
3. Version History
==================
8/13/07: 0.1 - Guide started. I'm using my old Fever 1 guide as a template, so
the basic skeleton is already laid out for me, which saves on a
good deal of work. Normal and Fever charts complete, as well as
the Overall averages. Most of dropset chart complete.
8/14/07: 1.0 - Guide ready for submission, and is basically complete at this
point. I'll likely make some additions later, especially in the
dropset section, but for now I'll just get it posted.
================================
4. Scoring and Garbage Mechanics
================================
Alright, let's get to it. Scoring for this game is actually a relatively simple
system. Everything is set, there is no randomizing whatsoever. The scoring also
ties directly into garbage production, but I'll get to that in a bit. Now, many
of you may have noticed that during a chain, the score display changes to show
the value of each link, like 40x2-->40x7-->40x13. There is a simple formula to
determine exactly what the score is at each link, and it looks like this:
Score = 40+(10*P) x C+P
Where C is the base Chain Value, and P is the number of extra Puyo in that
link. Extra Puyo are anything beyond the minimum of 4. So, for example, let's
take the above example of score progression and apply a couple extra Puyo to
it:
+0: 40x2-->40x7-->40x13
+1: 50x3-->50x8-->50x14
+2: 60x4-->60x9-->60x15
And so on. Do keep in mind that this formula only holds true when the amount of
Puyo per group is set at the default 4. Now, obviously this can't be changed in
Fever, so we'll not worry about that. So, basically, for every extra Puyo, the
first number increases by 10, and the second number increases by 1. The
exception to this is when there's more than 1 color group in the link. Then,
the game calculates each group separately, then adds the sides together. So,
for instance, take our first example. That first link's base is 40x2. Let's add
another group, and add 1 Puyo to one, and two to the other. This makes the
whole link come to 50x3 + 60x4, which simplifies to 110x7. This is the basis of
Power chaining.
Now, you're probably thinking "What's a base Chain Value?" Well, each character
has 2 sets of values, 1 for Normal (not Fever), and 1 for Fever. These values
are essentially what determines how powerful a character is, as they directly
factor in to how many points are earned in each chain link, and thus how much
garbage is produced. Unfortunately, there is not a set pattern as to how these
values increase, but luckily this information is readily available (albeit on
Japanese websites).
Now, for garbage. The amount of garbage thrown is calculated at each chain
link, which makes it relatively easy to calculate. The formula:
Garbage = Score/Rate
Bingo. That easy. All you do is take the points for each chain link and divide
it by the Rate (which starts at 120 by default), then total the chain up and
that's it. The rounding's a bit tricky though, and almost seems to deviate in
both directions, so calculations may be off by a few Puyo. I'll clear this up
once I have the chance to test it further. Also, keep in mind the rate does go
down as the match drags on, due to the effect of the margin timer. From what I
understand, the rate is divided by 1.5 every loop of the timer, which by
default is 96 seconds. So in theory, this makes it possible to still calculate
garbage accurately even when a match has gone for several minutes. I'm unsure
as to what the rate minimizes at though...it needs testing, and it'll be tough
to do...but you can be sure that I'll at least try.
===================
5. Character Powers
===================
The Chain Values. Arranged by character, separated by dashes. Simple enough,
eh? It's also arranged so that the highest power is at the top, and there are
averages for values up to the 15th chain, given that some characters hit the
max of 999 at or before it, and it's easily comparable to the Fever chains,
which are capped at 15 because, well, that's the max chain the game will feed
you, without extending, of course.

Yet again, Klug takes the cake when out of Fever. Personally I figured Zoh to
rank a bit higher on the list...but whatever. There're some equalities in

Once again, Ocean claims his rightful place at the top of the Fever chart, with
Rider sucking it up, again, at the bottom rung. Number of ties in this one as
well, like that 3-way for 2nd, again.
Darn the character limit, making me squish my pretty ranking chart together. :P
------------------------------------
5c. Combined Power Table of Averages
------------------------------------
And here we have what you'd get if you smashed both tables together and
averaged them: the Overall power rating. This simply takes the 15-chain
averages from both and, well, averages them, giving us a rough value of overall
character strength. I'm not actually going to do the whole table, as that would
take a couple aeons or so. Do you want to average 704 values into 352? Didn't
think so. :P
For Overall Power, ranking is thus:
Chr: Normal / Fever = Avg - N/F Ratio
RAF: 382.47 / 170.87 = 276.67 - 2.24
KLU: 397.40 / 148.93 = 273.17 - 2.67
RUL: 382.47 / 163.00 = 272.74 - 2.35
SCH: 397.40 / 145.20 = 271.30 - 2.74
ACC: 382.47 / 148.93 = 265.70 - 2.57
AKU: 363.73 / 161.87 = 262.80 - 2.25
OSH: 316.53 / 194.80 = 255.67 - 1.62
RID: 369.73 / 132.33 = 251.03 - 2.79
ARL: 348.73 / 148.93 = 248.83 - 2.34
SAT: 349.27 / 145.20 = 247.24 - 2.41
OCE: 290.13 / 204.07 = 247.10 - 1.42
ONI: 316.53 / 172.87 = 244.70 - 1.83
AMI: 322.40 / 165.47 = 243.94 - 1.95
SIG: 290.20 / 194.80 = 242.50 - 1.49
YUR: 290.20 / 187.53 = 238.87 - 1.55
LEM: 322.40 / 152.67 = 237.54 - 2.11
ZOH: 290.20 / 169.07 = 229.64 - 1.72
SUK: 263.93 / 194.80 = 229.37 - 1.35
DON: 301.80 / 152.67 = 227.24 - 1.98
FEL: 263.93 / 169.07 = 216.50 - 1.56
BAL: 275.73 / 139.60 = 207.67 - 1.98
NAZ: 275.73 / 139.60 = 207.67 - 1.98
And Raffine comes out on top, followed closely by Klug. Obviously Normal power
plays into this quite a bit more, but suffice to say that if you took two
players of equal skill and matched them together, the odds would slightly favor
the higher ranked character. Even Ocean, king of the Fever chart, only ranks in
at 11th in the overall listing. Maybe if I weighted Fever somehow, it might be
a bit more accurate...but I'll leave it alone for now. Feel free to throw
suggestions at me as to how I might go about making a more accurate
representation of this. Contact info's at the bottom. :)

5d. Power by Dropset
--------------------
Given that dropset does play into a character's power significantly, I've
decided to do a section for it as well. It's really tough to base anything on
it though, as it's all up to the player to decide how to use these groups of
colored blobs.
Arranged from least Puyo to most Puyo. B stands for the big 4-sets that can
change color, 4 stands for the split color 4-sets. TP is total Puyo per 16
drops.

Obviously Baldanders takes the cake on most Puyo, while Arle's the classic
freak, sitting on all 2s. In theory, here, Baldanders would be the most
powerful, assuming a player could properly handle such a heavy dropset. There's
a lot of speculating that can be done here as to how much a dropset plays into
a character's overall power, and I'd be more than happy to entertain other
opinions on this matter. Once again, contact info's at the bottom.

5e. Notes on Powers
-------------------
It's worth noting that your inidividual handicap, or the difficulty you choose
at the beginning of a match, does affect the chain values. Setting it easier
increases them, while setting it more difficult will decrease the values,
making you significantly weaker, unless your opponents are set to the same.
I'll do some testing in the future to figure out exactly how much of an effect
there is, but for now I'll just leave this note here.
