[I] \ Introduction
--------\======================================================================
This FAQ is based on Monster Hunter Freedom 2 for the PSP handheld. I have been
playing Monster Hunter since Febuary 2005, and have decided to finally publish
a full quest walkthrough for one of the titles that hit the US shores. The goal
of this guide is to assist new people playing this game from start to finish of
all quest completion and goals.
Monster Hunter is both published and developed by Capcom. If you are new to the
game, I suggest first reading over the instruction book that came with the
game. You can find many helpful tips and information within the book. I also
suggest, if you are planning to play on Xlink Kai or with friend(s), that you
first play a bit of the offline mode before doing so. This way you can fami-
liarize yourself with the controls and make yourself some basic equipment.
I have implemented a search system, I suggest that you use it. It is very
simple to use, simply press Ctrl+F and enter the desired section's corres-
ponding roman numeral surrounded by square brackets in the search field. Press
enter to be taken to that section. The walkthrough and boss strategy sections
each have their own tables of contents. I highly suggest that you utilize this
system, as it will allow you to use this guide much more effeciently.
** Special Note **
As of 2/28/08, I am opening this guide as an open compendium to Monster Hunter
players. Please submit your strategies to
[email protected] so that I may
regard them for quality standards and prepare them for the guide should I
accept them.
Also, please provide a handle you want to be "authored under". Your works may
or may not be reproduced or rewritten, but you will be retained as the main
provider of the strategy. Thank you for your support.
Note though, I will be holding these to a certain quality. I won't just accept
any strategy, but don't be modest! If you're having doubts about your strategy,
go ahead and send me it. The worse that could happen is I tell you to work on
it. All I ask is don't spam my e-mail.

[II] \ Walkthrough
--------\======================================================================
This walkthrough covers each and every quest found in Monster Hunter. From
offline to online, it's all here. Due to the nature of the game, I have inclu-
ded a list of all of the quests. I have implemented a search system, it is very
easy to use. Search for the quest that you need guidance with from the list
below. Simply press Ctrl+F to call up Find. Enter the corresponding search code
to the right of the quest in the search field and press enter to be taken to
that quest. I highly suggest that you utilize this system, as it will allow you
to use this walkthrough much more effeciently.
Also, throughout the guide I will be referring to other quests within the walk-
through by using parenthesis around the quest code. To call up that quest code,
simply replace the parenthesis with chevrons.
Example:
Referral Code: (Z1.02)
Actual Code: <Z1.02>
For those of you just looking to unlock your Urgent Quests, please note next
to required quests for unlocking an Urgent quest, I have noted a star next to
their name in the list.

BEGINNER'S INFO
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is some general info about starting the game and making some pre-hunting
decisions. Read over this section if you need some basic help about some of the
early game choices that face a hunter.
O===================================O-----------------------------------------
| A Look at Pokke Village | <B1.01>
O===================================O
--- Your Home
Your home is where your story begins. Here you will be supplied some basic
story to the origin of your hunter and how he came to this village. Inside is
a bed to save your game, a dresser to change your hair style, and the most
important feature, an inventory box that houses your equipment and items you
collect.
To use the box, Press Square next to it. The functions are self explanatory and
you should learn to familiarize yourself with it since you will be using this
system frequently. Since you're given beginning armor and weapons, I suggest
equipping the Mafumofu set that first comes with it and using one of the begin-
ning weapons. For weapon suggestions, review the next section (B1.02).
A final note, however, is that the bookshelf will house any magazines given to
you which in turn house many useful game tips. New players are highly encour-
aged to read these articles!
--- Pokke Farm
Near the south end of town is a very useful feature called the Pokke Farm. I
will not be going into depth on how this works, but talk to the caretaker there
and he will open the Farm for usage that will greatly help with getting some
early game resources. Please refer to my Pokke Farm guide by this following
link if you want to know more:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/psp/file/934395/50112
--- Weapon/Armor Smith
On the East side of town there is a small, open-faced shack that houses the
Village Smith. This man can use any materials you have collected and to craft
various weaponry to increase your Hunter's strength. You will be visiting this
shop very frequently as he provides various services. He will explain his uses
to you so I will leave it at that. If you want the specific weapon trees or
material listing for creating weapons and armor, please look at the following
sites.
Weapons:
http://www.skiesofcrimson.com/mhf2/weaponsmith/
Armor:
http://www.skiesofcrimson.com/mhf2/armory/searcharmor.php
--- Weapon/Armor Seller
In the same shack, there is a Felyne (white cat) that sits upon the counter.
He sells various weapons and armors, but unfortunately, they are all very weak,
and generally more expensive than crafting your armors since they do not re-
quire you to farm. He later sells some various interesting boots that can only
be received from him, but otherwise you shouldn't really use his services.
--- General Seller
A little further North is a lady who runs a general shop for purchasing handy
items for taking on quests. She sales various tools, healing items, and ammo
for your quests, so make sure to look over what she has since you'll be using
her most common sold wares (Herbs, Potions, Whetstones, Cold/Hot Drinks, etc.)
fairly often.
--- Seasonal Seller
Near the Gathering Hall is an old lady with a tremendous bag upon her shoul-
ders. This old lady carries various items that change after every quest! Make
sure to check out her wares from time to time because they are handy and you
don't want to miss out on a day she's selling what you need! Primarily useful
are Sm Bone Husks, Psychoserums, and Farcasters.
--- Cat Lady
After you have unlocked your 2* quests, another old lady with a tremendous bag
(full of cats!?) normally stands near your house. She can offer you the option
to hire felynes. These felynes will be used in your Kitchen (in the back of
your house) to cook meals for your character that will give you various status
buffs that can greatly change the tide of battle. For use of the Cat's Kitchen,
please refer to the following guide:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/psp/file/934395/50115
--- Village Chief
This is going to be your main quest giver for quite some time. She's the old
lady in the Northeast side of town, sitting near the camp fire. Talking to her,
she will give you a list of quests to take and deploy in order to continue your
campaign as a monster hunter. She is where this guide's first list of quests
will start from.
--- Gathering Hall
After you've completed a good number of Chief's quests, you can continue to the
Gathering Hall for the choice of harder quests and even better rewards. This
Hall gives you the option of Online or Solo play, so if you want to play with
other hunters, these are the only quests available for you to go on with your
friends. However, do not start on these quests until you're a bit more exper-
ienced because they are even harder than Village Quests!
--- Training School
To the left of the Gathering Hall is a narrow pathway that leads to the Train-
ing school. This school has a basic training mode (somewhat recommended for new
players), as well as special training that shows up on your guild card. You
must unlock quests in the Training School from fighting monsters in normal
quests however, so most of them will be off limits until 3-4* Village Quests
are complete.
O===================================O-----------------------------------------
| Picking Your Weapon Type | <B1.02>
O===================================O
Before you begin on some quests, you should assess for yourself your play
style, and decide on a definitive weapon type you should specialize and train
in firstly. I'll break down each weapon type, their strengths and weaknesses,
and then make some personal suggestions that you might consider following.
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
| Weapon Type: | Sword and Shield
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
Sword and Shield is a class that compounds swift attacks and great defense.
This weapon is versatile in the sense that it gives you all the speed required
to bound into the enemy, as well as the tools to escape danger. This is a
Blademaster cutting type weapon.
1.) Blocking/Evasion: Block and Roll
2.) Damage Over Time: Poor-to-Low
3.) Attack Speed: Fast
4.) Movement Speed: Average
5.) Sharpness/Bouncing: Average-to-High, Average
6.) Weapon Reach: Low
7.) Damage Type: Cutting
8.) Solo/Party Usage: Poor-to-Average, Great
9.) Anti-Wind/ESP: Minor Anti-Wind Resistance for Standard Combos.
10.) Crowd Control: Great
11.) Misc. Strength:
a.) Can use most items while weapon drawn (Hold R, Press Square).
b.) Good elemental damage due to fast attacks.
12.) Misc. Weakness:
a.) When blocking attacks, damage usually carries through.
b.) Limited shield size means some hitbox detection "glitches" in
when your character gets hit or blocks.
13.) Overall Rating: Good until hard rank missions.
As you can see, this weapon's strength outweighs most of its weaknesses until
late in the game where it simply does not pump out enough damage to solo some
monsters. A great beginner and party-support weapon type.
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
| Weapon Type: | Dual Swords
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
Dual Swords is another class that prioritizes speed. However, it ditches the
shield for a secondary sword, leaving you a little more open to enemy attack
but increasing your damage output. This is a Blademaster cutting type weapon.
1.) Blocking/Evasion: Roll, but no Block
2.) Damage Over Time: Average
3.) Attack Speed: Fast-to-Really Fast
4.) Movement Speed: Average
5.) Sharpness/Bouncing: Low-to-Average, Average-to-Rarely
6.) Weapon Reach: Low-to-Average
7.) Damage Type: Cutting
8.) Solo/Party Usage: Average, Average
9.) Anti-Wind/ESP: Demonize gives Anti-Wind and limited ESP
10.) Crowd Control: Average-to-Great
11.) Misc. Strength:
a.) None.
12.) Misc. Weakness:
a.) Deals only 70% of the elemental damage shown in its status.
b.) Because of no blocking, very vulnerable to Roars/Flashes.
c.) Fast attacks degrade sharpness quickly.
d.) Devilish Dance combo (R, Circle + Triangle) is slow, and doesn't
do that much damage. The regular combo or Demonized Spin attack
(R, Circle) do more damage over time.
13.) Overall Rating: All-Around Average
As you can see, Dual Swords are more of a "double-edged sword" in a sense. You
take on increased damage output for more overall weaknesses and the biggest
strength of the Sword and Shield's item usage and blocking versatility is lost.
Its uses should probably be kept to Village Quests and beginning Guild Quests
until you get Earplug armor.
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
| Weapon Type: | Greatswords
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
Greatswords are a class that prioritizes attack evasion and slow, strong hits.
In MHF2, they've gained a new charge ability that makes them capable of dishing
out heavy damage in a singular hit, but requires great timing to pull off eff-
ectively. This is a Blademaster cutting weapon type.
1.) Blocking/Evasion: Block and Roll
2.) Damage Over Time: Average-to-High
3.) Attack Speed: Really Slow
4.) Movement Speed: Slow
5.) Sharpness/Bouncing: Average, Often
6.) Weapon Reach: High
7.) Damage Type: Cutting
8.) Solo/Party Usage: Average-to-Great, Poor-to-Average
9.) Anti-Wind/ESP: Anti-Wind on all attacks, ESP on Charge Atttack lvl 3
10.) Crowd Control: Great
11.) Misc. Strength:
a.) Kick while weapon drawn. Use to knock allies out of sleep and KO.
b.) Level 3 Charge Attack is great for staggering monsters or waking
monsters up for a lot of damage.
12.) Misc. Weakness:
a.) Level 3 Charge attack requires precise timing and is worthless
against some monsters. (i.e. Black Gravios, Kirin)
b.) Wide-sweeping motions make some monster hitzones hard to hit.
c.) Blocking can result in losing sharpness.
d.) Heavy reliance on Charge Attacks to reach above average damage
over time.
e.) Can only use 2 attacks online (Upswings knock players around).
13.) Overall Rating: Poor for some situations, Great for others.
This weapon is very selective to the enemies it is advantageous against. My
suggestion concerning this weapon is to use it against large groups of enemies,
and monsters with incredibly predictable attack patterns that leave it vulner-
able against the Level 3 charge attack (i.e. Tigrex, Rathalos).
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
| Weapon Type: | Longswords
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
Longswords are a weapon that takes the general practice of a Greatsword's wide
sweeping range of attacks and makes it into a speed-driven class designated to
get into the fray quickly and throw a lot of hits in. This is a Blademaster
cutting type weapon.
1.) Blocking/Evasion: Roll, Attacking Backhop
2.) Damage Over Time: Low-to-Average
3.) Attack Speed: Average-to-Fast
4.) Movement Speed: Average
5.) Sharpness/Bouncing: Average, Often
6.) Weapon Reach: Average-to-High
7.) Damage Type: Cutting
8.) Solo/Party Usage: Average, Poor-to-Average
9.) Anti-Wind/ESP: Anti-Wind on all attacks, ESP when Spirit Gauge Full
10.) Crowd Control: Average-to-Great
11.) Misc. Strength:
a.) Attacking back-hop can end any combo and help avoid danger.
b.) Fast attacks are good for elemental damage.
12.) Misc. Weakness:
a.) Because of no blocking, very vulnerable to Roars/Flashes.
b.) Wide-sweeping motions make some monster hitzones hard to hit.
c.) Knocks other players around and disrupts their attacking online.
d.) High-bounce rate requires you to keep Spirit-Gauge up for ESP.
13.) Overall Rating: Down the line Average.
Longswords make good learning weapons, but shouldn't be relied on. A lot of
players who pick up this weapon make the mistake of thinking it is very power-
ful and in fact are misguided. It's generally frowned upon to bring this to an
online mission because it's disruptive and the only purpose to such a weapon is
to cut tails. You should reserve use of this for solo missions early in the
game.

| Weapon Type: | Lances
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
Lance is a weapon class that focuses on quick-successive hits that deal decent
damage, and boasts a large shield for a great defense. This is a Blademaster
weapon that has both cutting and impact type damage.
1.) Blocking/Evasion: Block and Backhop / Sidestep (Up to 3x in a row)
2.) Damage Over Time: Average-to-High
3.) Attack Speed: Average-to-Fast
4.) Movement Speed: Slow
5.) Sharpness/Bouncing: Average-to-High, Average-to-Rarely
6.) Weapon Reach: High
7.) Damage Type: Cutting and Impact
8.) Solo/Party Usage: Average-to-Great, Average
9.) Anti-Wind/ESP: Dash-Attack grants Anti-Wind
and ESP (for Green Sharpness)
10.) Crowd Control: Poor
11.) Misc. Strength:
a.) Can be used for "locking" strategies.
b.) Very precise attacks make hitting weak hitzones easy.
c.) Large shield rarely suffers from glitches in hitbox detection.
d.) Lance boasts both Impact and Cutting damage, so you can cut tails
OR break crab shells.
12.) Misc. Weakness:
a.) Your stamina drains quickly from constant blocking.
b.) Standard combos sometimes leaves you open with little chance to
block in time from having to cancel with a backhop and then block.
c.) Easy to get trapped against walls by a Boss.
13.) Overall Rating: Very good once you learn the weapon.
Lance is great for getting close to a monster and manipulating them into a set
of attacks so you can do great damage. This weapon type takes a lot of mastery
however and should be used in conjunction with another weapon type to guarantee
you're capable of beating most monsters. This is a very specialized weapon.
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
| Weapon Type: | Gunlances
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
Gunlances are very much like their Lance counter-part, however they sacrifice
some raw damage per hit and movement ability for longer combos (so better dam-
age over time) and even greater blocking ability because their normal upstab
attack can be cancelled into a block.
1.) Blocking/Evasion: Block and Backhop / Sidestep
2.) Damage Over Time: High-to-Great
3.) Attack Speed: Average-to-Fast
4.) Movement Speed: Slow
5.) Sharpness/Bouncing: Average, Often-to-Average
6.) Weapon Reach: High
7.) Damage Type: Cutting
8.) Solo/Party Usage: Average-to-Great, Average
9.) Anti-Wind/ESP: Anti-Wind during Dash-Attack and Wyvern Fire.
10.) Crowd Control: Poor
11.) Misc. Strength:
a.) Can be used for "locking" strategies.
b.) Large shield rarely suffers from glitches in hitbox detection.
c.) Upstabs can be linked directly into a block. Great for Tanking.
12.) Misc. Weakness:
a.) Sharpness is degraded from using burst shots.
b.) Your stamina drains quickly from constant blocking/tanking.
c.) Easy to get trapped against walls by a Boss.
d.) Uppercut attack has a very large sweep radius making it somewhat
difficult to pinpoint a target hitzone.
13.) Overall Rating: Very good once you learn the weapon.
Gunlance is a tanker’s dream. Since you are able to switch from attacking to a
block at anytime during an upstab combo, you can utilize a strong offense and
remain unharmed. Similar to its lance counterpart, this weapon takes a lot of
mastery to be comfortable with sitting right in a bosses’ face all the while
dealing damage to it.
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
| Weapon Type: | Hammers
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
Hammers are basically very mobile power-houses. What they lack in defense they
clearly make up in huge damage if used correctly. They thrive on throwing your
enemy around like a ragdoll, and knocking the senses out of them too.
1.) Blocking/Evasion: Roll, but no Block
2.) Damage Over Time: High-to-Great
3.) Attack Speed: Slow
4.) Movement Speed: Average
5.) Sharpness/Bouncing: Average, Average-to-Rarely
6.) Weapon Reach: Average
7.) Damage Type: Impact
8.) Solo/Party Usage: Great, Widely Varies on User.
9.) Anti-Wind/ESP: Anti-Wind when Charging. ESP on Unsheathe,
Charge LVL2, and Charge LVL3 Attacks
10.) Crowd Control: Average
11.) Misc. Strength:
a.) Can charge attacks while moving, great for positioning your Attacks.
b.) Impact damage can be used to break crab shells.
c.) KO status infliction for attacking an enemy's head (or body in some
cases) will grant you and the entire team some free hits.
12.) Misc. Weakness:
a.) Small Targets can become a nuisance.
b.) Because of no blocking, very vulnerable to Roars/Flashes.
c.) Lack of cutting attribute makes this weapon unable to cut Tails.
d.) Super-pound, Charge LVL2, Golfball Swings, and Unsheathe attacks
all throw teammates around. Be mindful of other players online.
13.) Overall Rating: Most pros agree this is the "Top-Tier" weapon of the game.
Considering the major weakness is a wyvern's roar, it is advisable to get an
Earplug armor soon if you are really considering this Weapon Type. I highly
advise employing the strengths of the hammer as it just gets the job done once
you get your timing down. This weapon is great through-out the entire game.
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
| Weapon Type: | Hunting Horns
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
Hunting Horns are a bit underestimated. They actually have some pretty decent
damage output, make great for parties, and their wide myriad of skills across
each separate Hunting Horn can make them invaluable to a hero.
1.) Blocking/Evasion: Roll, but no Block
2.) Damage Over Time: Average-to-High
3.) Attack Speed: Slow-to-Average
4.) Movement Speed: Average OR Fast
5.) Sharpness/Bouncing: Average, Average-to-Rarely
6.) Weapon Reach: Average
7.) Damage Type: Impact
8.) Solo/Party Usage: Poor-to-Average, Great
9.) Anti-Wind/ESP: Anti-Wind and ESP during Superpound and Recital Mode
10.) Crowd Control: Average
11.) Misc. Strength:
a.) Can be used for "locking" strategies.
b.) All Hunting Horns can grant themselves ESP status.
c.) All Hunting Horns can increase their own movement speed to "Fast".
d.) Almost always welcome on parties, due to its support nature.
e.) KO status infliction for attacking an enemy's head (or bodies in
some cases) will grant you and the entire team some free hits.
12.) Misc. Weakness:
a.) Because of no blocking, very vulnerable to Roars/Flashes.
b.) Lack of cutting attribute makes this weapon unable to cut Tails.
c.) Recital is slow and requires careful consideration before using.
d.) Superpound, and certain attacks during Recital can knock your
teammates around. Be careful.
13.) Overall Rating: Average for Solo play, Great for online.
Since this class is so specialized, it is often suggested to avoid this weapon
for offline play. This is the wrong way to look at it, however. It's great for
offline play if you get a horn to suit the specific monster you are engaging.
Otherwise, other weapon types will be much better. Make sure to reference a
weapon guide and DS31's HH Note guide to guarantee weapon quality of whatever
horn you choose to make.
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
| Weapon Type: | Light Bowguns
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
Light Bowguns are the first Gunner class we're going to cover. Ranged classes
are great for keeping a medium distance from your enemy for manipulating their
attacks yet taking no damage since you don't have to be within their attack
radius.
1.) Blocking/Evasion: Roll, but no Block
2.) Damage Over Time: Low-to-Average
3.) Movement Speed: Average
4.) Solo/Party Usage: Poor, Average
5.) Misc. Strength:
a.) Rapid-fire fires many shots for the cost of one. Very quick too.
b.) Able to employ "shotgun" tactics.
c.) Ranged attack leaves player generally safe from attack.
d.) Great for Stunning, Sleeping, and Poisoning the enemy.
e.) Great for other team support.
f.) Most Light Bowguns have very fast reload speeds
6.) Misc. Weakness:
a.) Because of no blocking, very vulnerable to Roars/Flashes.
b.) Gunner armor is weak. Player will usually die in a few hits.
c.) Limited ammunition excluding Normal Shot Lv1, which is weak.
d.) Ammunition is generally expensive.
e.) Not a single Light Bowgun has "Light Recoil".
f.) Rapid-fire lowers the power of the bullet and cannot be redirected
while firing in case the boss moves. This also applies to preventing
you from getting out of the way of attacks.
7.) Overall Rating: Very weak, and Rapid-fire leaves a lot to yearn for.
Excluding Profusion, this weapon class really leaves a lot to be desired. I
suggest learning it well enough for your training missions, but for general
mission use, stick to Melee or one of the other 2 Ranged classes.
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
| Weapon Type: | Heavy Bowguns
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
Heavy Bowguns are very much like their cousin, the Light Bowgun, but they make
some very interesting changes to the general play-style. They sacrifice some
move speed (and thus "shotgun" tactics), in replacement for strong, powerful
shots to take out your enemy.
1.) Blocking/Evasion: Block (with shield attachment), Roll
2.) Damage Over Time: Average-to-High
3.) Movement Speed: Slow
4.) Solo/Party Usage: Average, Average-to-Great
5.) Misc. Strength:
a.) High-end Heavy Bowguns have "Light" Recoil, meaning very fast shots.
b.) Ranged attack leaves player generally safe from attack.
c.) Decent for Stunning, Sleeping, and Poisoning the enemy.
6.) Misc. Weakness:
a.) Ammunition is generally expensive.
b.) Using a Shield means you can't get the Long Barrel attachment.
c.) Shield doesn't block much damage. Usually only used for roars.
d.) Limited ammunition excluding Normal Shot Lv1, which is weak.
e.) Light Recoil Guns have Very Slow load speed. Reload Speed+2 Armor is
recommended to counter this.
7.) Overall Rating: Best ranged weapon for most situations.
They may require a lot more mastery due to their lessened walk ability, but
they are far more powerful than either of the other two ranged classes. That
is their trump card. I highly recommend learning to use this Ranged weapon over
Light Bowguns or Bows.
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
| Weapon Type: | Bow and Arrow
-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬-¬
Bow and Arrow is very sparse class that can span a lot of different reviews
from a thousand different users. This is mainly due to their wide variance in
attack type per each bow, per each charge, etc. Whatever the case, however,
they thrive on their hit-and-run tactics for survival and damage dealing.
1.) Blocking/Evasion: Roll, Backhop, no Block
2.) Damage Over Time: Poor-to-Low in beginning, Average near end.
3.) Movement Speed: Average
4.) Solo/Party Usage: Poor-to-Average, Average
5.) Misc. Strength:
a.) Attacks can be charged while moving.
b.) Able to employ "shotgun" tactics.
c.) Ranged attack leaves player generally safe from attack.
d.) Unlimited ammo. Bottle Coatings are generally inexpensive.
e.) Melee attack can cut tails.
6.) Misc. Weakness:
a.) Because of no blocking, very vulnerable to Roars/Flashes.
b.) Gunner armor is weak. Player will usually die in a few hits.
c.) Melee attack has limited reach. Makes cutting tails hard.
d.) Cannot carry very many Coating Bottles into battle.
e.) Wide variance of attack types (Scatter, Pierce, Rapid) across
many bows leads to a lot of deliberation to attacking.
7.) Overall Rating: Too low of a damage rate at start of game. Decent later.
I recommended using bows over Light Bowguns if you really want ranged attack
and decent movement speed, but stay away from this until you're proficient
with melee. However there is no arguing an experience player with a bow will
never get hit, and keep the pressure of attacking the monster consistently.
Unfortunately most bow users don't have this skill.

Here is a simple checklist of every monster that can be captured. I have it in
a format that makes it easy to check each monster after capturing them. Simply
copy to a notepad and replace the "-" with an "O" as you catch monsters, as it
will make your life a lot easier when you are trying to get the "Ecology
Report" guild card award. (Easiest to view in notepad using "Square Fonts"
such as Courier, Courier New, or Lucida Console).

Q: "How do I capture monsters?"
A: To capture a monster, you're going to need a trap and 2 Tranq Bombs. Then,
you are going to have to weaken the monster to 25% of their health. If you
can tell the monster is weak enough, lay down your trap, have them run into
it, and then hit them with the 2 Tranq Bombs. If they fall asleep, you have
successfully captured them.
---
Q: "How can I tell when the monster is weak enough?"
A: That depends on the monster. Here's a list of all identifiers.
Giadrome/Velocidrome/Gendrome/Iodrome/Bulldrome:
They'll pause from battle, then start running for another area.
Kut-Ku
Ears will fold back on head. Also can limp.
Gypceros:
Once he starts playing dead, slow down. He's not weak enough
but you don't want to kill him. Once you see him limp, capture.
Garuga:
He rarely limps. Wait for him to come out of rage mode if you
think he is getting weak.
Cephadrome:
He'll run to area 7. The only time he ever enters this area is
to sleep, so capture him if you see him there. Will rarely limp.
The top fin on his back also will fold down.
Plesioth:
The fin on his back will fold down. Will rarely limp.
Congalala:
Will retreat to a cave and sleep. He only enters caves when weak.
Blangoga/Rajang:
Will limp when weak.
Hermitaur/Ceanataur:
When mouth bubbles, they'll be a darker shade than normal.
Rathalos/Rathian/Basarios/Gravios/Monoblos/Diablos/Tigrex:
Will limp when weak.
Khezu:
When you are fighting him, he'll suddenly pause in battle for an excess
of 5 seconds, without any animation. Then he'll immediately fly away.
Alternatively, he can sometimes limp.
---
Q: "What monsters can be caught by what traps?"
A: Shock Traps can capture all of the listed monsters except Gypceros.
Pitfall Traps can capture the following:
Kut-Ku, Gypceros, Garuga (cannot while in rage), Plesioth, Congalala,
Blangona, *Rajang, Rathalos, Rathian, Khezu, Basarios, Gravios, and
Tigrex.
Pitfall Traps cannot capture the following:
Giadrome, Velocidrome, Gendrome, Iodrome, Bulldrome, Cephadrome,
Daimyo Hermitaur, Shogun Ceanataur, Monoblos, Diablos.
*Rajang will not fall in a trap unless he is in rage, or paralyzed/sleeping.
---
Q: "Why should I capture monsters?"
A: You can do it to get better rewards. For example, when you capture a Silver
Rathalos, instead of getting just the normal 5% carve of a ruby off of his
tail, you have a 7% chance, x3 chances, of getting a ruby in the rewards.
It's very useful in the end game for getting rare items.
Plus, if you capture every type of monster (including color variations),
you can snag a nifty award for your guild card called "Ecology Report".
---
Q: "Can I capture monsters in quests I'm not hunting them in?"
A: Yes! The beautiful thing about capturing is it can be done in any quest. If
you encounter a Velocidrome in a gather mushrooms quest, you can capture
it! Any of the monsters I've listed as capturable, can be captured should
you encounter them in any quest.
---
Q: "So what boss monsters cannot be captured?"
A: Kirin, Shen Gaoren, Lao-Shan Lung, Fatalis, Kushala Daora, Chameleos,
Lunastra, Teostra, and Akantor.

VILLAGE QUESTS

====================================================================|---------|
One Star Quests | {VLCH1} |
====================================================================|---------|
O===================================O-----------------------------------------
| Mountain Herb Picking | <V1.01>
O===================================O
Reward: 300z
Contract: 0z
Time: 50 min.
Area: Snowy Mountains (Day)
Main Monsters: Popo
Anteka
Special Conditions: None
Goal Conditions: Deliver 5 Mountain Herbs
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Over
For this quest you need to search various spots on the mountain and find 5
mountain herbs. Once the quest begins, head over to the big blue box. From now
on, refer to this as the "supply box"; at the start of each mission you should
view its contents. It usually contains supplies that will aid you in your
quest. Once you are finished taking whichever supplies you want (most notably
Maps, First-Aid Medicines, Rations and Hot Drinks), leave the area into area 1.
If you grabbed the map you should be able to understand my explanation of the
following. From Area 1, climb the 2 cliffs on the East side of the map, and
enter into the cave leading to area 4. Use a Hot Drink once you enter, unless
you equipped Mafumofu Armor, which grants Anti-Cold. If you're not using that
armor, and you don't use a Hot Drink, when you remain in a cold climate your
stamina will drain incredibly quick meaning you won't be able to sprint while
holding R.
Now, you'll be in the Southeast portion of the map, but we want to be in the
southwest. Follow the hallway North and then Southwest until you reach the
honey comb. Gather from this spot for possible Mountain Herbs and some very
useful Honey.
Now run north into Area 5, continue north until you reach the connection bet-
ween areas 5 and 6. Don't change areas though, because there are 2 patches of
herbs here which will more than likely give you the rest of your quarry. Once
you've gathered, if you have 5 or more Mountain Herbs, return to base camp. If
not, continue to explore areas 6, 7 and 8 until you get the required amount.
When you get back to base camp with 5 mountain herbs, turn them into the red
box by pressing O next to it. This will be the common practice when returning
items for gathering quests. The mission will finish and you'll be shown the
Rewards screen. Rewards are received at the end of every quest and are usually
related to the task you completed. Once you grab what you want from it, you'll
be returned to Pokke village.

| An Anteka in the Snow | <V1.02>
O===================================O
Reward: 300z
Contract: 0z
Time: 50 min.
Area: Snowy Mountains (Day)
Main Monsters: Anteka
Popo
Special Conditions: None
Goal Conditions: Deliver 3 Anteka Antlers
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Over
For this quest you need to kill some Anteka (some might call them a moose), and
collect their horns to return to the Red Box at base camp. Simply head to Area
2 where you'll find a group of Anteka. Since these creatures are generally very
docile they should pose absolutely no threat to you. Though if you anger them
they can attack back they are very weak and die very easily.
Attack the Anteka (until they die), then carve them up for their Antlers. To
carve, stand over their carcass, put away your weapon (press Square), and then
press Circle over the corpse. Continue to do this until you collect 3 antlers.
If for whatever reason you kill all the Anteka in the area and don't get 3
antlers, leave the area and come back and they'll respawn. Once you collect
them all, return to the base camp and deliver them into the red box. Mission
Complete.

| Hunt the Carnivore! | <V1.03>
O===================================O
Reward: 300z
Contract: 0z
Time: 50 min.
Area: Snowy Mountains (Day)
Main Monsters: Giaprey
Popo
Special Conditions: None
Goal Conditions: Slay 5 Giaprey
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Over
Well then, this is your first Monster Hunt against something substantial. This
is not a gathering quest, this requires nothing more than the slaying of 5
Giaprey. Whatever you carve from them, you get to keep. You also will not
have to return to the base camp after the mission is over. In any case, let's
go over the quest strategy.
Grab your supplies and head out. There's only 2 areas on this map you should be
concerned with, and that's area 3 and area 5. All 5 Giaprey will be split up
between these two areas. I suggest going to Area 3 first, since the area is
much more spread out so you can get used to fighting them.
The strategy to fighting small monsters in large numbers is to pace the battle
and not get surrounded. This being said, try to always be facing your enemies
within camera view so as to not get surprised and unable to react to their
attacks. Other than that, don't get greedy and pace yourself until you learn
their attack patterns well.
Giaprey bodies disappear fast and attempting to carve them while fighting a
pack can end up in you being flung around like a rag-doll, so I suggest only
carving the last one in an area that you kill, since you'll be fighting these
guys pretty often as well as getting their various parts in the rewards, it's
not necessary to go after every carve you can get.
In any case, use these tactics to kill 5, get whatever carves you can, and then
mission completed.
O===================================O-----------------------------------------
| Sinking Feeling | <V1.04>
O===================================O
Reward: 300z
Contract: 0z
Time: 20 min.
Area: Snowy Mountains (Night)
Main Monsters: Popo
Anteka
Special Conditions: None
Goal Conditions: Deliver 3 Popo Tongues
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Over
Perform your common practice of grabbing things from the box, and make your way
to Area 6. Once you get here, you'll see a cutscene with a group of Popos, but
alas, it couldn't be this simple right? A Tigrex lands on the scene and scares
the Popos to run to Area 8.
Now, when the cutscene ends, don't panic! You don't have to fight this brute of
a monster, in fact, you're not supposed to! Simply run (being careful to avoid
his attacks) into Area 8 and you'll be safe here. Kill the Popos and carve them
for tongues. If you run out of Popos to kill and carve, leave the area and then
quickly re-enter to spawn more. Remember, each Popo gives 2 carves!
Return to base camp once you collect 3 and deliver in the box.
O===================================O-----------------------------------------
| Slay the Blangos! | <V1.05>
O===================================O
Reward: 300z
Contract: 0z
Time: 50 min.
Area: Snowy Mountains (Night)
Main Monsters: Blango
Anteka
Special Condition: None
Goal Conditions: Slay 3 Blangos
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Over
Very much like hunting Giaprey, except a different prey. These guys shouldn't
be any more difficult than any of your last quests, but since all 3 Blangos you
have to hunt hang out in Area 8, this could get a bit messy.
Grab box items, clamber up the mountain top until you reach Area 8. This is the
first mission that you'll encounter that has big blocks of ice that will block
your pathway. You have 2 options: You can hit them until they break, or you can
go around. Unless you're using Dual Swords or Hammer though, I don't suggest
attempting to break them down. The two paths you should probably take are:
Area 1 -> Area 4 -> Climb up east cliffs into area 5 -> Area 6 -> Area 8
-or-
Area 1 -> Area 2 -> Climb up Mountain into Area 3 -> Drop down onto lower level
of Area 3 -> Area 5 -> Area 6 -> Area 8.
Use the same general practice you took on with Giaprey, except a normal Blango
carcass should last a little longer than a Giaprey's, so you should be able to
get 2-3 of the carves pretty easily.

- Village 1* Hunt The Carnivore! ................ (V1.03)
- Village 1* Sinking Feeling .................... (V1.04)
- Village 1* Slay The Blangos! .................. (V1.05)
Once you complete the previous quests, the Village Chief will inform you that
you're ready to take on the vicious Giadrome. To select this quest from her,
check the Urgent Quest section and pick this quest.
Giadrome is your first "Boss" type monster you will encounter. They fight just
like a Giaprey, but they hit harder and have a lot more HP. The fact that they
are fast and hit harder can be troublesome for a lot of new players, so you're
going to have to stay on your toes and be cautious, not reckless. Be safe, not
sorry. Take extra healing items and anything you think would be useful for
this quest.
Grab everything from the supply box, you'll find some new items you probably
haven't encountered yet, such as a Shock Trap and Tranq Bombs. These items are
used to capture a monster once you've weakened it enough, and are a great tool
for farming boss creatures for better rewards. If you want to know how to use
them, refer to the Battle Tech section for capturing. It is not necessary to
complete this quest though.
Since this will be the first time fighting a Giadrome, he will remain in Area 6
until you arrive. However, his normal domain is to travel between Areas 6, 7,
and 8. Since he gets a cutscene all to himself, make sure to memorize the dif-
ference in his appearance from normal Giaprey. The most prominent one would be
his large blue crest on his head. In any case, the Giadrome is probably one of
the easiest parts about this quest, because many times he's going to be aided
by a flock of Giaprey, which makes for a bad day.
If things are getting too hectic and you need a break you can lay the Shock
Trap for generally just attacking the Giadrome if you're not concerned with
capturing yet. The trap only works on Boss creatures, so if any other monster
runs onto it, it won't matter. Lay the trap down and have him run into it. Once
the yellow field surrounds him, attack away until it wears off.
When a Giarome starts getting weak, they'll immediately attempt to leave the
area and go somewhere else. Stay on them! If they get too far away you could
lose them and it's even possible that they regain some life. If this happens
and you kept your trap until this point, you should try capturing.
If you killed him, he'll give two carves and good rewards. Good luck. After
you complete this quest, it will be moved into the Two Star Quests listings.

Bulldrome tends to give a lot of new players a bit of a scare because his
direct attack style and good speed make him quite a nuisance. Bring a mobile
weapon or one that can block, and heavily exploit that strength while fighting
him and you'll have little difficulty.
The Bulldrome starts in area 7 and will travel between areas 6, 7, and 8.
He usually makes an effort to charge, and the only time you should not be close
to him is when you see him start thrashing around wildly in place. Otherwise,
he's going to charge so just make sure to get out of the way.
Lance users should stand in place blocking and let the bulldrome come to them,
then retaliate while he's recovering from his dash.
Dual Sword, Sword and Shield, Longsword, and Greatsword users should run in at
the end of his charge and attack him, then roll out while he's turning towards
you.
Hammer and Hunting Horn users should exploit the superpound move until he flips
on his back and gets stars over his body. He'll be stuck in this status for a
long time so triple-pound with a Hammer or consistently swing your Hunting Horn
until he gets back up. With a strong enough weapon you can even kill him before
he gets up.
Other than that, he shouldn't give you any difficulty. When you see him waddle
off to another area, it's probably time to catch him. Bulldrome gives 3 carves
if you kill him instead.

Velociprey
Special Condition: None
Goal Conditions: Hunt the Yian Kut-Ku
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Zero
This is probably the hardest challenge for upcoming new players in the game.
Not because he's hard, just because he's the hardest "step-up" in difficulty in
the entire game. In any case, you'll want to bring a full supply of healing
items and whetstones for this quest. You can consider bringing flash bombs but
they really shouldn't be needed. Any weapon type is good for Kut-Ku. Use high
raw damage, ice element, or water element.
Encounter the Kut-Ku in Area 6 for the first time. He likes to travel between
areas 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
When fighting Kut-ku, he is incredibly vulnerable to attacks on his *left side.
The reason for this is that he can only use a tail spin in one direction, which
starts on the opposite side of where you'll be standing, giving you a huge
window of opportunity to get out of the way. Plus, he hardly ever uses any
other attack while you're standing here, meaning you can dart in and out of the
way of his tail while he just spins in place.
*Note: when I say left side, I mean HIS left. That means if you are both facing
each other, it is your right, and if you are both facing the same direction, it
is your left.
His other attacks to watch out for are his fireball and his dash, which he will
only use against you if you are standing directly in front of him -- so don't.
Your goal is to stay on his side and stay there, dealing constant damage.
His weak spots are his Head for blunt weapons, and his Wings for cutting type
weapons. If you are using a weapon with very little reach, attack his legs
until he falls over, and then attack the exposed weak spot. Example: Trip him
with a Hammer and then go triple-pound his face.
Some other things to note about Kut-Ku. When you attack his face a lot, the
ears surrounding his face will get large cracks in them, indicating you "broke
his face". This will give you extra rewards at the end of the quest. Also,
when you weaken him enough to be captured, you'll notice those same ears will
fold back on his face, just like they were before he noticed you. He might even
limp away as well. If you notice these, feel free to use a pitfall or shock
trap to capture him.
Do not use sonic bombs or sm barrel bombs on him. While they will give you a
small opportunity to attack him after using them, he'll immediately enter rage
mode after he comes out of his daze which will make him a lot more difficult to
deal with.
If you kill him rather than capture, he'll give 3 carves. Good luck.

| Rarest of the Rare Beasts | <V2.10>
O===================================O
Reward: 1500z
Contract: 250z
Time: 50 min.
Area: Jungle (Night)
Main Monsters: Congalala
Velociprey
Special Condition: None
Goal Conditions: Hunt the Congalala
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Zero
Before starting this quest, there's an optional item you should consider to
bring. Deodorant is a helpful item to counter one of the most annoying status
effects in the game. You'll get 2 in the supply box, but you may consider
making a few more. To make them, you'll need a Sunset Herb + Bomb Material. If
you don't have Bomb Material, combine Stone + Sap Plant.
I suggest mobile weapons for Congalala, because he has big openings after his
attacks but require you to dash into battle for them. Thus it makes weapons
like Lances not that effective. Hammers, Horns, and any of the Sword weapons
are good for him. Ranged weapons aren't advised. His elemental weakness is
against fire.
Start the quest and head to area 3 if it is your first time for the cinema.
Otherwise, he travels between areas 1, 2, 3, 9, and when he gets weak, he'll go
to area 6. If he enters 6, consider waiting a bit for him to fall asleep, and
then enter to capture or deliver a hit.
The easiest fighting strategy for Congalala is this. Stay to either one of his
sides, and wait for him to start an attack animation. He has very long delays
after almost all of his attacks, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting in
and dealing damage.
Most advantageous Congalala animations to exploit:
--- Monster Attack: Belly Flop ---
Easily dodged and plenty of recover time to get in a long combo. Just be
careful that he slides forward a little bit more after he lands.
--- Monster Attack: Wild Swinging ---
Stay away until he lands on his back to avoid getting affected by the quake
effect. This attack is his strongest attack but leaves him incredibly vulner-
able.
--- Monster Attack: Belly Slam ---
He stands up straight and sticks out his belly, making it incredibly hard.
However, it's a very long animation and allows you to get free hits on his
back.
When he goes into rage mode, both his face and buttox will turn red. And often
times, if you are standing near him when he first enters rage mode, he will
fart onto your character. If this happens, Deodorant and stay out of his way.
He has a tendency for using less of his longer delayed attacks during rage
mode, so it is advisable to really try and stay towards his side and not attack
recklessly.
After he takes some damage, he'll then eat the item he was carrying held in his
tail. He will then get either Fire breath, Poison breath, or Sleep breath.
Whichever one he does have, however, he will do it in a sweeping motion towards
his front, and sweep it to each side. You can either take this opportunity to
hit him in the sides, or you can position yourself at a slant just outside of
his breath, and jump in for a few hits on his face right when he stops the
attack.
Once dead he will give 3 carves. Good luck.

By this point since you've fought Blangos, you'll have no problem fighting
these. These are the pink furry monkeys you'll find quite often in swamps and

Vespoids are large wasp-like creatures that like to avoid you unless you don't
pay attention to them, and then fly in to attack you to inflict the abnormal
status paralyze. However, when you normally kill a vespoid it will explode into
a million pieces. The only way to guarantee a carve from a vespoid or it's
cousin hornetaur are to kill them with poison element. Equip yourself with a
poison weapon if you want the carves (my preferred weapon is Hydra Bite).
Begin your quest and set out. They are very weak and the only annoyance they
provide is that their flaky nature makes them avoid your attacks quite fre-
quently, and that they can paralyze you. They like to spawn in Areas 5, 7, 8,
9, and 10.

Mosswine love mushrooms, which means they are always sniffing them out. If you
see a mosswine, don't hesitate to watch its behavior as it might lead you to a
patch of unseen mushrooms in quests of this nature. Also you can consider
killing the mosswine, as it will sometimes carve a special mushroom.
Whatever the case may be though, you'll be scouting for mushroom patches. Find
them in Area 1, 2, 5, 6, 9 and 10. Return 10 of them to the delivery box at

Gendrome, another cousin of Velocidrome and Giadrome, fights in exactly the
same manner as his counterparts, except one startling difference. Any attack
that grazes you has the potential of inflicting paralyze status. While this is
his major strength, he also has more of a bite to all of his attacks, as well
as more health. Otherwise, fight him just like any other one of his cousins.
Also, don't forget to grab the cool drinks from the box. Anytime you're in the
desert, the heat will consistently drain your health until you use one of
these.
Gendrome's normal areas of travel include 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6.

Reward: 1200z
Contract: 200z
Time: 50 min.
Area: Desert(Day)
Main Monsters: Cephadrome
Special Condition: None
Goal Conditions: Hunt the Cephadrome
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Zero
Before starting this quest, you should try to prepare yourself with Sonic Bombs
to help pull Cephadrome out of the sand easily. To make a Sonic Bombs, you'll
need 3 essential ingredients: Nitroshrooms, Fire Herbs, and Screamers. You can
gather or purchase Nitroshrooms or Fire Herbs, however Screamers must be hunted
from Velocidrome or Yian Kut-Ku. In any case, combine what you have available
by making Gunpowder (Fire Herb + Nitroshroom), and then combine Gunpowder +
Screamer. Try to bring at least 4-6 to the quest just in case.
Start the mission and don't forget to grab the Cool Drinks and Sonic Bombs.
Make sure to use a Cool Drink once you enter the desert and track him down. The
first time you start this quest, he will wait for you in Area 5. After that the
Cephadrome will travel mostly between areas 1, 2, and 5.
He will be in the sand and his fin will be a lot darker color then normal the
normal cephalos you see swimming through the sand. Once he spots you, chase
after him and throw a sonic bomb towards his fin. The sound will drive him out
of the sand and give you a chance to attack.
When fighting Cephadrome, you have two options to avoid his attacks. The first
is to position yourself behind HIS right leg. This is because Cephadrome only
tail-spins towards his left, leaving you a huge opportunity to get out of his
strike zone. He will normally spam this while you are this close, giving you a
lot of opportunities to attack. The only attack you have to worry about while
attacking him here is his hip-check, so be forewarned if he starts to turn
towards you that it's time to bail.
The second option for attacking, is to stand about 2 rolls away from the front
of his face. While standing here, he will spam his Sand-spit attack, which is
very easily dodged and gives you a huge opportunity to attack his Head/Neck
area, which takes some pretty decent damage. Get in, attack, and get out before
he thinks to use a hip-check which has even less of a chance of getting you
then the previous attack.
Once it is injured it will go to Area 7 to heal. Now is your chance to either
capture it or finish it off. Killing it will give 3 carves.
O===================================O-----------------------------------------
| Liver of Legend! | <V2.16>
O===================================O
Reward: 1200z
Contract: 200z
Time: 50 min.
Area: Desert(Day)
Main Monsters: Gendrome
Cephalos
Special Condition: None
Goal Conditions: Deliver 3 Piscine Livers
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Zero
You can bring sonic bombs to this quest, though they're not needed. If you want
to use sonic bombs, refer to the quest above for how to make them. Also bring a
Farcaster to return to base quickly.
For a weapon, I heavily suggest using Great Sword or Hammers, as they are great
for knocking Cephalos out of the sand without the need for sonic bombs. Lastly,
you can consider a bowgun that can use Crag Shots.
Start the quest and grab the Cool Drinks, Sonic Bombs, and anything else you
want. Leave camp and head to Area 1 and use your Cool Drink once you leave the
camp. Once in Area 1, you'll notice there are 2 Cephalos, with very little room
to move. This makes it very advantageous for us to get them out of the sand.
Either use the sonic bombs to knock them out of the sand directly, or run
around the area until they stop in place. If they jump out on their own volit-
ion, then go ahead and slaughter them. If they submerge, prepare to attack
their fin as they pop out to attack. A Greatsword Charge or a Hammer Superpound
should knock them out pretty easily. If you have a bowgun, shoot their fin with
a single crag shot, and that will also bring them out.
While you're in this area, Gendrome is likely to run through. You can either
choose to hunt him or run out of the area and wait for him to leave.
Once you get 3 Piscine Livers, farcaster, turn into box. Mission complete.

| Gone Fishin' | <V2.17>
O===================================O
Reward: 900z
Contract: 150z
Time: 50 min.
Area: Desert (Day)
Main Monsters: Cephadrome
Genprey
Special Condition: None
Goal Conditions: Deliver 2 Goldenfish
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Zero
Before going on this quest, you can consider preparing yourself to lessen some
possible frustration you're going to incur if you're unfamiliar with fishing.
This would be to make some Goldenfish bait. Note this is not required to finish
this quest, just to make it easier. To make Goldenfish Bait, you're going to
need 2 Snakebee Larvae and 2 Fireflies.
You can get Snakebee Larvae, they naturally come from your Bee Hive in your
farm, or you can purchase them from the Seasonal Seller. To get Fireflies, you
can get them from your Insect Thicket or you can sometimes get these from the
Seasonal Seller as well. All you need is 2 of each, use the combine feature and
make your bait.
Lastly, bring a Farcaster which can be purchased from the Seasonal Seller.
When you start the quest, if you didn't make Goldenfish Bait, grab the Bait
from the box. They'll work, they're just not as good. Drop down the well in the
base (press circle while facing it, then move forward into it) for a shortcut.
You'll be in Area 6, drop down the cliff and run towards the water.
Look in the water before you start fishing. If you're familiar at all with
fishing prior, you are looking for a gold-colored fish the same shape as either
a Springnight Carp or an Arrowana. If you do not see this, leave the area and
then come back. You can choose to go to either area 7, 9, or 4 to do this, but
I think going to 7 is probably the fastest (continue cycling as long as you
do not see one).
Once you do see a Goldenfish in the water, cast your bait by highlighting the
bait in your item bar and pressing Square. If you are using Goldenfish Bait,
then no other fish will interfere with you catching the Goldenfish. If you
didn't bring Goldenfish bait, then you'll have to go through the process of
pulling out your bait before another fish bites it, casting it back in, and
waiting until the Goldenfish bites.
Once you see the fish bite, the lure should sink about the way as well as
making a distinct "Sploosh" sound, otherwise it's a nibble and you shouldn't
pull yet. To pull out, press X. A fish can either "Bite", "Nibble Once and
Bite", or "Nibble Twice and Bite." If you see the fish "Nibble Twice", you know
that the third time for sure is a Bite, so don't hesitate to press X once you
see the lure start to sink.
Once you catch 2, farcaster and turn them into the red box. Whew, quest clear.

When fighting a Khezu, make sure you always have them painted. They like to
travel areas in such a matter that makes them very hard to track, since they
spend so much time in the air. I suggest bringing at least 4 paintballs and 3
psychoserums, as if you lose him, he'll be very annoying to track down.
The most crucial thing I must stress for fighting Khezu, is bring a weapon type
that can block. His roar is the #1 Hunter Killer of any one of his attacks. It
just leaves you way too open to be set up for a strong, heavy hit.
The first time you start this quest, he'll start in area 3. After that he'll
choose to travel between areas 1, 6, 7, and 8, and he likes to rest in area 3
when he gets weak.
To fight Khezu, you'll want to understand his attacking style, as he has some
attacks that will catch players very off-guard. During the battle, the only
areas you should attempt to hit Khezu are his Head/Neck area, and his legs.
Since Khezu is so tricky, let's take an in-depth look at his moves.
Monster Attack: Roar
The #1 threat to players fighting Khezu. If you even suspect he's going to
roar, block. He's just way too dangerous if you're caught up in a roar, so
try as hard as you can not to be caught by it. The only hint you have to
this attack is he gets a creak in his neck and he points his face upwards.
Monster Attack: Area Shock
If you see an electro-static surround his body, get away! He's going to
shock in an area-of-effect type attack that completely envelopes his body,
making it impossible to hit him unless you're using a Lance, Hammer, Hunting
Horn or Greatsword. If you are using a Lance, it's advised to just block
this attack as opposed to trying to get away from the shock.
Monster Attack: Neck Stretch Type #1
If you are standing in front of him, and see him retract his neck straight
backwards, he's going to shoot it out directly forward. Simply move to the
side of his neck and attack him during the animation delay.
Monster Attack: Neck Stretch Type #2
This one is more at a slant, and a little harder to dodge. Run away from him
to dodge this one.
Monster Attack: Ground-Shock
He reels his neck back and makes a charging sound, then emits 3 lightning
shocks that travel forward across the ground. Getting hit by this attack will
hurt a lot and may inflict paralyze status, so quickly run to one of his sides.
This attack has a huge delay though, giving ample time to attack while he is
still executing it. This attack can NOT be blocked.
Monster Attack: Hop-Attack
He hops at you. Literally. Dodge and then go attack him as he recovers from
this attack.
Monster Attack: Lightning Hop-Attack
Same thing, except you get a warning from him glowing blue, but it executes
a lot faster and is a lot deadlier. He can only use this attack when he is in
rage mode.
Monster Attack: Acid Drop
He also can hang from a cave ceiling in the Swamp area, and drop acid on the
ground. But of course, he's in the Mountains right now, so you don't have to
worry about that. Remember this for later encounters though.
If you kill him and do not capture, you will get 3 carves, and will now be able
to go on 3* Elder Quests. Completion of this quest will also list it under 3*
quests from now on. Good Luck.

Areas Plesioth travels between 3, and 4.
The only difference between Green Plesioth and his normal counterpart, are the
variance in speed and power. Green Plesioth gives a lot of players a lot of
trouble because he moves a lot faster, and hits harder. The only solution I can
give you to this dilemma is be more on guard and accustom yourself to his set
of attacks. Remember, practice makes perfect.

| A Swarm of Hermitaurs | <V3.07>
O===================================O
Reward: 900z

Time: 50 min.
Area: Jungle (Day)
Main Monsters: Congalala
Hermitaur
Special Condition: None
Goal Conditions: Slay 10 Hermitaurs
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Zero
For this quest, you'll be fighting Hermitaurs, the smaller cousin of Daimyo
Hermitaur. Hermitaur are elusive and speedy, making them a minor annoyance with
little challenge at all to hunters.
Hermitaur spawn in areas 3, 4, 9 and 10. Kill any you see in plain sight --
they are fairly harmless, you just have to avoid their sweeping claws. They
won't do much damage even if they connect.
Alternatively, they like to burrow underground. To find them, you'll have to
watch closely for small puffs of sand raising from the beach. If you see this,
quickly dash over it and roll. The Hermitaur will attempt to grab your feet,
and then come out of the ground. You know what to do once it is out of the
ground. Kill 10.

Quest Unlock Details: Complete Village 3* "Gypceros: Venomous Terror" (V3.12)
Refer to strategy from Village 3* (V3.12) "Gypceros: Venomous Terror"
Gypceros likes to move from areas 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Purple Gyp's only notable differences involve spamming his flash attack more,
and a little more speed. If you were able to best the other Gypceros, apply the
same strategy, as he's not much tougher. You can consider attempting to break
his head crest faster to avoid constant flash spamming if you like.
O===================================O-----------------------------------------
| The Lurking Desert Giant | <V3.09>
O===================================O
Reward: 1800z
Contract: 300z
Time: 50 min.
Area: Desert (Day)
Main Monsters: Daimyo Hermitaur
Genprey
Special Condition: None
Goal Conditions: Hunt the Daimyo Hermitaur
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Zero
This strategy's author: "Fresh"
Daimyo Hermitaur is a big red crab with a Monoblos shell on its back. You can
break this shell twice for a Monoblos related reward (Monoblos Heart for G-Rank
Hermitaurs for example). Breaking this shell can be done really quick with a
Hammer or Hunting Horn.
You can defeat Hermitaur with any weapon, blocking is of no need here. He has
no screaming or stunning attacks so just go for it.
His way of traveling between areas is by burrowing. He starts in 5 and can
travel between areas 1, 2, and 7. He goes to area 9 when weak.
For handling him and dealing damage, roll between his legs when he attacks
and counter-attack while standing between his legs. He has low stagger limits
so exploit them by hitting his legs or face repeatedly. His face is the weak
spot both to cut and blunt damage.
His attacks and moves are as follows:
Backwards Charge:
He turns his Monoblos shell to you and runs you down. This attack hurts
but can be seen easily as his back is facing you when he starts it. He will
use it when you are behind him, so stay to his sides.
Side Swipe:
Ok, you stay at his side and will receive this. He walks sideways and swipes
with his scissors. The attack stretches out in front of him so if you stay a
little behind him it will miss.
Forward Push:
This is his most used attack. He'll make a pushing movement forward with both
scissors and it does fairly low damage. It can interrupt your combo though.
Forward Lunge:
Just like the normal push he positions himself but makes a small charge and
lunge forward. If you happen to be at his side you now have the opportunity
to beat at his shell. This takes a bigger chunk out of your health so try to
avoid it.
Forward Spray and Push:
Avoid this. He puts his scissors to his mouth and extends them in pushing
motion while spraying water from his mouth. The attack reaches out in front
of him and to his sides as his scissors push outside. Stay away.
Jump Attack:
His most deadly attack. He gathers himself and jumps up, followed by a body
slam. Get out of the way quickly.
Burrow Attacks:
He can use two of these. For either one the attack is started by
burrowing.
1.) He will follow your path and surfaces directly underneath where you were
standing. He'll do this twice.
2.) He alternatively will do seemingly random surface pokes.
Anyway, run and wait for him to begin surfacing and you'll have some quick
free hits during the time he is pulling himself back onto land.
Sit: Sometimes he just sits there and giggles. Give him some treatment then.
Cover:
He wraps himself and squats. You cannot harm him here, all attacks will bounce
as long as he is in this position. A well timed sonic bomb wakes him up and
gives you some chances for combos in addition to his drop.
He yields three carves.
O===================================O-----------------------------------------
| Water Wyvern in the Desert | <V3.10>
O===================================O
Reward: 2100z
Contract: 350z
Time: 50 min.
Area: Desert (Day)
Main Monsters: Plesioth
Special Condition: None
Goal Conditions: Hunt the Plesioth
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Zero
Similiar to fighting Cephadrome, Plesioth adopts many of the same attack pat-
terns, but is much larger and hits much harder. We will, however, use the same
tactics for killing it.
Weapon consideration should be a Blocking weapon if you Melee, or a Gun that
can fire Crag and Pierce shots. Plesioth is weak to Fire and Thunder elements.
His cinema in Area 7 the first time you face him. He only cycles between areas
6 and 7. Bring at least 5 Sonic Bombs, and as an optional, a Frog or Lg Barrel
Bombs+.
Once you encounter Plesioth, he's not going to do you any good being submerged
in the water, so you have to pull him out. There's a few ways to do this:
1.) If Plesioth does NOT notice you, you can go to the water, and throw your
Frog into the water. He will slowly approach the frog, and once you see it
drop below water, pull him in! When he lands on the surface, he will flop
around for a good amount of time for lots of free hits, so exploit it!
(If at any time Plesioth notices you before taking the frog, IMMEDIATELY
pull the Frog out and get away! If you're slow at doing this, he may get
off an easy Water Blast and it can kill your character in one hit!)
2.) Sonic Bomb. As long as Plesioth is not in Rage Mode, throw a sonic bomb
towards the water near him, and he MAY jump out of the water.
3.) Lg Barrel Bomb+ can be placed on the edge of the water, and if Plesioth is
close enough, he will trigger it with his water spray and the blast radius
will not only damage him, but it will also bring him onto the surface.
4.) If you're using a Bowgun, Crag or Clust shots can pull him out as well.
5.) Anytime that Plesioth runs back to shore, and jumps into the water, run to
the spot the Plesioth jumped from, and there's a chance Plesioth will jump
right back out.
After he's out, it's time to attack.
The first option is to attack his legs until he falls over, and then attack his
stomach while he is flopping on the ground. Position yourself behind HIS right
leg, because he only spins to his left. Now, the tricky part about fighting
Plesioth is because he is so huge, you will be left wide open for a hip-check
if you don't take caution of it. If you can, block the hip check, or if you're
daring, ROLL forward towards the direction of the hip-check to pass through it.
Note that rolling through it should only be used in desperation, or if you are
using Evade+2 armor.
The second option, is to stand directly in front of Plesioth, about 3-4 rolls
away from his face. Because Plesioth is so big, you should only employ this
strategy if you are using a melee weapon with Medium or greater reach, or a
ranged weapon. He will spam his water-spray, which is easily dodged. Attack his
face/neck area during that time, and then back away. If you don't back away far
enough, he may initiate a hip-check attack.
Watch for the fin on the very top of his back to fold down, signifying he is
weak enough to capture. If you broke it by attacking it, you may not as easily
determine when he's weak, but it's still possible. If you kill him, he gives 4
carves. Good luck.

While an explanation should not be necessary, they fight just like Velociprey
or Giaprey. They have a tendency to inflict stun status when they hop on you,
so be careful of that.
The only dilemma this quest might impose is that you have to scour the desert
until you kill about 18 Genprey. You'll find yourself at a lack of abundance
until you reach this number. Once you do, area 4 should become the spawn zone
for the last 2+ Genprey.

| Gypceros: Venomous Terror | <V3.12>
O===================================O
Reward: 1800z
Contract: 300z
Time: 50 min.
Area: Swamp (Night)
Main Monsters: Gypceros
Hornetaur
Special Condition: None
Goal Conditions: Hunt the Gypceros
Fail Conditions: Reward Zero
Time Zero
This strategy's author: "Fresh"
Gypceros is a step above a Kut-Ku in terms of health, damage, and speed, but
the general strategy is overall fairly straightforward and may be even easier
for some new players. It also has one of the most annoying attacks ever derived
in a game: The stealing peck. Additionally it has some hard parts surrounding
its legs which will make your weapon bounce if it's not within green sharpness.
I recommend a weapon with blocking ability since his flash attacks can be
annoying otherwise. If you intend to follow the basic, safest strategy to
fighting Gypceros however, it isn't necessary since you'll generally be unable
to be hit and thus can bring a Hammer/Dual Swords/Long Sword if you desire. For
item preparation, since Gypceros is a poison-based monster, Antidotes are handy
for saving your life.
So what's this safest strategy you ask? Stand in between his legs and use
attacks that will keep you relatively stationary. The bulk of his attacks while
you are under his legs will be tail swipes (which usually miss), and flashes
leaving you plenty of time to attack. There is some interpretation still needed
in regards to completely avoiding his tail, but this for the most part works.
He flies when traveling so painting him is a good idea. His starting point is
usually in area 2, he will travel to areas 4, 5, and 8 as well. When he is
weakened he will return to area 2 to sleep.
Here is a list of his attacks.
Tail Swipe:
Just the normal tail roundhouse you would expect from a tailed wyvern. His tail
expands a bit in length when doing so. Standing near or beneath him will cause
it to miss often.
Run and Bite:
He makes a short charge towards you and makes a biting motion to the side.
Peck:
The attack you absolutely need to avoid by rolling away. He makes four pecks
while moving forward. When it hits you it has the chance to steal something out
of your inventory, normally potions and stuff like this. There's no way to
retrieve the stolen goods. In addition it can lock you with pecks when raged.
If he does manage to get a rather rare item you brought into the quest, you may
even consider abandoning the quest to get it back.
Jump and Peck:
The same as above, except he jumps towards you to cross the distance.
Poison Spit:
He spits poison towards you. This attack deals little damage by itself but has
a rather long poison duration, so really try to avoid this.
Rage / Jump:
When he goes into rage he jumps up and down, knocking you over with his feet.
While it's not really an attack and doesn't deal much damage, it's just better
to stand a few feet away when he starts this if possible.
Flash:
He stands firm and does three slow pecks, then erects himself and flashes with
his head crest. This immediately stuns you. You can block the flash or, if
timed correctly, roll away. Or you just stand between his legs where no
immediate attack can hit you. When you break his crest, he will try to flash
but it won't work anymore, giving you a nice opportunity for some free attacks.
Fly and Land:
He makes a little jump in the air and lands immediately. It knocks you down,
but is harmless otherwise.
Chicken Run:
He makes an erratic motion, runs to a particular place, which is always the
same in a given area, and starts a mad dash across the stage spitting poison
along the way. He will hit 2-3 different points before ending this run. This
run always uses the same pattern in a given area, so if you know it, you can
just stand out of his way and look what he's doing. The biggest problem with
this attack is that he can chain it multiple times, meaning he might run around
the same area 3-4 times. The best advice would be to find the "end point" of
this attack and wait there for him when he starts doing this.
Run and Flee:
Makes another erratic motion, runs to a specific fly-off spot and soars away.
This is unique to Gypceros since other wyverns just fly away starting wherever
they are. He knocks you over when you are in his path.
Feign Death:
When he's near death he starts using this 'attack'. He falls down just as if
dead, but the quest isn't over. On G-Rank you can now carve him once, but don't
do this on elder quests. When he's touched he makes his attack by jerking his
wings and tails abound. This attack hurts a lot, so don't fall for it. Just
wait until he's bored with playing dead or poke him from a distance and you'll
be safe. This is also the best indicator for capturing him, but he can start
this before he is actually weak enough to be captured. I'd say attack him for
another 3-4 more minutes after he starts before attempting to capture.
If you kill him, he gives three carves.

Areas Kut-Ku travels in Swamp are 2, 4, 5, and 6.
Now, this quest may actually impose some difficulty on you, considering that
this is a Swamp (Night) quest, there will be puddles of poison to deal with,
on top of Blue Kut-Ku's naturally having a higher speed than their Pink friend.
My advice is to stay to areas 5, 6, and 2 as much as possible for this quest,
considering area 4 is a pain to deal with. Carry some spare Antidotes if you
intend to fight there.

Iodrome. The last and supposedly strongest of the raptor Dromes. However, let
me say first of all that this guy does not pose a serious challenge. In fact,
some would say that Gendrome is more frustrating considering the relative lack
of threat poison holds.
He’ll be fighting in the swamp, so bring a hot drink on the very off-chance
that he’ll go into one of the caves, but otherwise the environment should pose
no problems.
His main attack is the basic 'stepping bite' move, which is ridiculously easy
to dodge. He also likes to spit poison at you, which can be a nuisance, but
doesn’t cause serious harm. Like the other dromes, he has a very good, yet
inaccurate jump attack –- this is his strongest attack and may take a chunk out
of your health if you’re wearing bad armour.
As normal, the minions in this quest are more of a hassle to deal with than
your actual prey. Take them out if you don't want to be swarmed. Also, they are
all susceptible to Iodrome’s poison, which could save you the bother of killing
them yourself.
The strategy for fighting Iodrome is to attack his side, roll, attack his side,
roll and repeat. Attacking him from behind between the legs can prove helpful,
as it makes him flinch more than attacks to his flanks. Head-on attacks are
doomed to failure, as he is unlikely to flinch and will either poison you or
bite you.
Areas Iodrome likes to travel include: 5, 6, 7, 8.
If you kill him and don't capture he'll give 2 carves. Good luck.

Hornetaurs are crawling versions of the vespoids, they look similiar to dung
beetles. They are only slightly more annoying that the Vespoids. The Hydra
Bite is excellent for this quest to ensure you get carves, as it has low
sharpness with decent poison element.
They like to spawn in area 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 and 9.
It can also be useful to take along poison smoke bombs if you are having
problems with the bugs shattering. If you are going to use Poison Smoke Bombs,
you are going to need a little patience since it does take some time for the
poison to kill them.
The best strategy when using Poison Smoke bombs is to run around and kind of
gather all the bugs around yourself and throw one or two down, depending on
the number of bugs. Then wait until they scream. Watch where they fall so you
can carve and don't worry if you get hit a few times, they cause almost no
damage at all.
As for the Congalala, you can choose to ignore him, or it's easily within your
capability to slay him within the time limit. Since you have so much time, you
can even consider bringing pick axes/bug nets as well.

Find the small blue crabs. In order to find them, you're going to have to spot
them underground, by looking for puffs of smoke that rise from the ground.
Easiest way to get them out is to roll over the spot to avoid getting hit by
their pincers when they pop out.
They move fast by running up to you and holding their pincers out as if to give
you a hug. Just hit them a couple of times with a weapon of any choice. Carve
once each for a chance to get carapaceon brains (and other misc items), these
are an account item sold at the end of the quest for pokke points. If you
cannott find them in area 7, just run around, they pop up out of the ground,
also going back into 6 will respawn a couple of them.
Slay 10 of them.
They like to spawn in Areas 2, 3, 6 and 7.

Don't forget to bring Iron/Mega pickaxes, you will need them since the supply
box only provides Old Pickaxes which break relatively easily. About 3-4 extra
ones should be sufficient.
Use the cold drinks and rations from the blue box and go mining. The carry
limit for coal is 10, taking a farcaster to make this a little less time
consuming is a great idea.
The mining areas for the coal are 3 (1 spot), 4 (2 spots), 5 (2 spots),
6 (2 spots), 8 (3 spots).
The Shogun is easily ignored in this quest but there is easily enough time to
kill or capture.

A new area for MHF2, there is two parts to it, collect supplies from the box
and proceed to area 2, which connects into the tower. Remobras are flying
snake-like creatures, they spit poison (this is easily avoided), just stand
under them and whack at their tails, a few good hits, they fall and die. The
best weapons for this are going to be Greatswords, Longswords, Gunlance, or
Bows/Bowguns, which can make the quest go a lot faster.
They like to spawn in Areas 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10, which is a straight shot from
the beginning of the map to the top of the tower. You can kill all 10 by simply
climbing the tower and killing them on your way.
Also note the other monster in this quest is the Great Thunder Bug. Most
hunters find the item they drop, Thunderbug Juice, to be quite valuable. They
are found in area 3, and they appear to be floating orbs of light. They have a
random nature, but are easy to chase down and hit a few times (which should be
all it takes to take them out). Be sure to watch where their sparkles fall
since this is where the Thunderbug Juice is collected from.

As you may know or consider, writing a guide can take a considerable amount of
time, plus GameFAQs doesn't pay me to do it. In addition, it costs me money to
even purchase the game. Was this guide helpful? Do you have a PayPal account?
If you did, why not show me some support and donate a dollar or two. You'd be
helping me greatly and I'd be more willing to produce my guides faster. You can
make a donation to
[email protected].
Remember, the authors are providing you with a free guide as opposed to having
to purchase a possibly upwards of 10-15 dollar strategy guide. Thank you.

Q: Where's the rest of the FAQ?
A: It is a "partial FAQ" for a reason. It's still being made.
---
Q: How many hours does it generally take to reasonably complete this game
offline (i.e. finishing all quests and getting most equipment)?
A: You could complete every mission solo in 200-300 hours. If you wanted to
extend play for getting most of the high-end weapons and armor, as well
as online play, 600-1000+ hours.
---
Q: Where do you live? If lived near you and I wanted to play Monster Hunter
Freedom 2 with you, can I?
A: I live in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also, it is possible, so contact me about it.
