1. Style of Gameplay
Hakuoki is a visual novel. If you are unfamiliar with what exactly that means,
imagine a choose-your-own-adventure novel, add pictures and sound, and then
put it on a video game system. The game is completely story-driven. Depending
on the choices you make, you will follow down different paths. As in most
games, there are good endings, bad endings and the ever-dreaded GAME OVER.
This FAQ focuses on showing you how to get the good endings and unlock all of
the pretty pictures. Be sure to save if you choose a different picture than
what is listed as it can potentially lead you down to a BAD ENDING or Normal
ending. Also, I recommend saving before choosing any any options in
parenthesis, as they can lead to a BAD ENDING.

2. Story
Hakuoki takes place during the Bakumatsu, the end of the age of Samurai.
Chizuru Yukimura, the protagonist of this story, is a young girl who has left
Edo to search for her father in Kyoto. Through a series of wild events,
Chizuru winds up staying with the Shinsengumi. Now she is drawn to the heart
of what is considered one of the bloodiest wars in Japan. Will she be able to
find her missing father? Will she find the man of her dreams? And most
importantly, will she survive the war? Your choices as Chizuru will decide her
fate.

3. Characters
CHIZURU YUKIMURA
Chizuru is the daughter of a doctor from Edo (currently known as Tokyo).
Several months ago, work drew her father to Kyoto, where he disappeared.
Worried for her father, she disguised herself as a boy and traveled all the
way to Kyoto on her own. Despite her timid nature, she has an inner strength
that prevents her from cowering down when push comes to shove.
ISAMI KONDO
Isami is the leader of the Shinsengumi. Despite his humbler birth, he has the
true heart and soul of a samurai. He is trusting and good-natured, but don't
let his fatherly smile deceive you. He is more than capable of killing his
opponents with his sword.
TOSHIZO HIJIKATA
Toshizo is Isami's right-hand man. Before he joined the Shinsengumi, he was a
wandering pharmacist that peddled homemade remedies. He has a strong
admiration for Isami and will do anything to put his long-time friend into a
place of power. He is extremely strict and the key force maintaining order
amongst the ranks.
KEISUKE SANAN
Keisuke is cool and calculating. He will manipulate you with a gentle smile if
that's what it takes to get what he wants. Although he has proven loyal to the
Shinsengumi and his friends, it is often hard to see what he is truly
thinking...or plotting.
KASHITARO ITOU
Like Keisuke, Kashitaro is cool and calculating. But unlike Keisuke, he is a
narcissist to the extreme. Although he seems to get along well with Isami and
Heisuke, he has difficulty mingling with the rest of the Shinsengumi.
OKITA SOUJI
Flirtatious and playful, Okita is like a one-man cat. He worships the ground
Isami walks on and will do anything to support the man who helped raise him.
He loves to tease anyone, although his favorite targets are Chizuru and
Hijikata.
HAJIME SAITO
Quiet and reserved, Hajime follows his orders without question. As a result,
he is often given difficult missions, which include spying. It is hard to see
through his cold mask, but there seems to be a soft gentleness to him buried
deep within.
HEISUKE TOUDOU
Happy and kind, Heisuke is the youngest member of the Shinsengumi. Despite his
apparent happy-go-lucky nature, he has a strong sense of loyalty and
responsibility. He is best friends with Sanosuke and Shinpachi.
SANOSUKE HARADA
A master spearman, Sanosuke can be surprisingly hotheaded. He boasts about how
he managed to commit Seppuku and live to tell the tale! He is compassionate
with those he holds dear. He is best friends with Heisuke and Shinpachi.
SHINPACHI NAKAKURA
If you thought Sanosuke was easy to anger, tread carefully around Shinpachi!
He is a samurai who abandoned his lord to fight for his own beliefs. Because
of this, you can't impress him with your money or title. He is generally the
"big brother" type character in the Shinsengumi. He is best friends with
Heisuke and Sanosuke.
GENZABUROU INOUE
Genzaburou is one of the older members of the Shinsengumi, making him the
"father" character. He has a strong sense of justice and knows how to
correctly interpret whatever situation he is in.
SUSUMU YAMAZAKI
Susumu is not only a ninja spy for the Shinsengumi, but he also has undying
loyalty for Hijikata. He is skilled in the ways of the ninja. He keeps track
of the Shinsengumi's medical records.
KAI SHIMADA
This friendly giant is also a ninja spy for the Shinsengumi. Unlike Susumu,
who's loyalties lie for Hijikata, his lie in the beliefs of the Shinsengumi.
CHIKAGE KAZAMA
A demon "Oni" working for the Satsuma Domain, Chikage has taken a clear stance
against the Shinsengumi. He seems to consider Hijikata his rival and claims
that he will make Chizuru his bride.
KYOJU AMAGIRI
A demon "Oni" working for the Satsuma Domain, Kyoju likes to fight with his
bare fists. He is able to more than stand his ground against multiple
swordsmen at once. He does not like unnecessary bloodshed and has an overall
strong sense of honor and duty.
KYO SHIRANUI
A demon "Oni" working for the Choshu Domain, Kyo likes to fight with the most
modern-day guns available. Playful and crude, Kyo likes doing his own thing
regardless of what others think.
KAORU NAGUMO
Kaoru looks amazingly like Chizuru. Could they somehow be related, or is it
just mere coincidence?
SEN
One of Chizuru's only females friends, she is a full-blooded demon shrouded in
mystery.
KIMIGIKU
A high-ranked courtesan, KIMIGIKU is also a female ninja sworn to protect Sen.

5. FAQ
1. I'm a boy. Can I enjoy this game?
It depends. Do you enjoy reading novels written with female protagonists? As a
visual novel, this game is more like a book than a game on several levels. If
you don't enjoy books written in the female prospective, then you probably
won't enjoy the game. If that doesn't bother you, then you probably will. Of
course, there is also the matter of whether or not you'll enjoy the story and
gameplay, but gender has nothing to do with that. It's a great semi-historical
game, so try not to let gender issues be what gets in your way with playing it.
2. This is one of the first visual novels to get an official release in the
States. Is it selling well?
I sure hope so, but I wouldn't know. It's anyone's guess until Aksys Games
makes an official statement. I personally wouldn't believe the rumors I hear
until they do.
3. Where's all the button mashing? I thought this was an action game!
There is no button mashing. Although an action Hakuoki game is coming out in
Japan in spring 2012, there isn't a release date for the US or Europe. This is
a visual novel, basically making it like a really high-end choose your own
adventure novel.
4. I didn't follow the exact path you wrote down and still managed to get all
of the blood/endure pictures. What's up with that?
There are different ways to get them. I didn't list all of them because I've
seen just about as many different methods for those particular pictures as
I've seen Japanese FAQs for the game. This was the only method that I could
actually get to consistently work every time (Yes, I tried them out more than
once.) Also, the kind people at Half Adder gave me permission to use their FAQ
for the English run-through of the game and this was the method they had
written out.
5. What do the Romance and Corruption Meters mean?
The romance meter indicates who you're closest to. Since the closer you are to
someone, the more likely you are to follow them throughout life. Corruption
has to do with your fury level. In generaly, if you always give someone blood,
it should keep their fury level at the highest possible minimum. If your fury
level gets too high, your dear friend may either kill you or die in battle.
6. I thought this was a romance game. Where's all the romance?!
The game is pretty light on the romance for the first three chapters,
regardless of which character route you're taking. After that, you get varying
degrees of romance with the different characters. This is supposed to be a
romantic semi-historical game taking place in a time of war, so you won't get
too much stuff about making out if that's what you're looking for.
7. I've seen an anime with guys who wear haori just like the ones these guys
wear. It must be plagarized!
Actually, the blue and white haori were part of the Shinsengumi's uniform.
This is historically what they wore, so there isn't any plagarism going on in
that department.
8. If the majority of the characters are based off real historical guys, does
that mean they were hot in real life too?
Before you decide to look up pictures of these guys in real life, let me warn
you that they can be rather disillusioning... But if you're curious, it's
fairly easy to find pictures of Isami Kondo, Toshizo Hijikata, Hajime Saito
and a few other guys in the game.
9. Why did the Shinsengumi start wearing western-style clothes? That seems so
random.
It has been documented that Toshizo Hijikata felt that his men needed to wear
western clothes if they were going to stand a chance in western-style warfare.
Although they probably didn't get as neat of western clothes in real life as
they did in the game, they really did get a wardrobe change around then.
