1. What is the Muramasa?
*****************************************************************************
The Muramasa is a two-handed sword with an automatic blood healing ability;
as long as it is equipped, any enemies that bleed on Alucard will heal him
for 8 HP. It can be obtained as a rare drop from either a Vandal Sword in
the Clock Tower or from a Scarecrow in the Forbidden Library. When first
found it has -5 ATT, and it reduces Alucard’s DEF by 4. It will sometimes jam
when swung if Alucard’s ATT is 10 or less, and it is quite slow at first.
Once Alucard’s overall ATT is 30 or more, the speed and vertical range of the
Muramasa will see an increase.
As Alucard is healed by enemies’ blood, the ATT of the Muramasa will begin to
grow. This means the Muramasa has the potential to be the strongest weapon in
the game, maxing out at 999 ATT.

2. How is the ATT Growth Determined?
*****************************************************************************
As the Muramasa grows stronger, the number of blood heals needed to raise its
ATT an additional point increases. To determine how many blood heals it will
need to reach the next ATT point, double its current ATT and add 11:
(Muramasa’s Current ATT x 2) + 11 = # of blood heals needed to increase
Muramasa’s ATT by 1
For example, if the Muramasa has 5 ATT, it would take 21 blood heals to
increase the ATT to 6. It would then take 23 heals to increase the ATT to 7,
and so on.

3. How Many Blood Heals Does it Take to Max the Muramasa’s ATT?
*****************************************************************************
Maxing the Muramasa from -5 ATT to 999 ATT requires 1,008,016 blood heals.
This is calculated by finding the sum of the arithmetic series:
998
SIGMA (2n + 11) = 1,008,016
n = -5
It should be noted that, because STR also factors into Alucard’s overall ATT,
a player will maximize their overall damage output at 999 before the
Muramasa’s base ATT is 999. For example, if Alucard has 70 STR, he will be
outputting 999 damage as soon as the Muramasa reaches 929 ATT. In this
example, the player will see 999 damage after 872,356 blood heals, but the
Muramasa is still not technically maxed.

4. Transferring Muramasa’s ATT To a New Game
*****************************************************************************
So, why bother going the extra mile to max the Muramasa’s base ATT to 999 if
you will be seeing 999 damage output far sooner due to the STR stat? Because
it is possible to transfer the Muramasa’s ATT to a new game!
To do this, first load the game containing a Muramasa that you want to copy.
Next, perform a soft reset by holding Start + Select.
Now, start a new game and obtain the Muramasa.
The game will transfer the ATT from the original save to the new one.
Save your game to make the glitch permanent.
Now, let’s go back to the previous example: An Alucard with 70 STR grows his
Muramasa just until his overall damage output is 999 (meaning the Muramasa
really has a base ATT of 929). If he transfers this Muramasa’s ATT to a new
game, his STR will likely be quite a bit lower than 70 when he first finds
the sword (it can easily be obtained by Level 20), and he will no longer be
attacking for the full 999 with the transferred Muramasa. Therefore, it can
be worth it to go that extra mile and maximize the Muramasa’s base ATT on
the original save so that future saves may reap the full benefits while at
lower levels.

5. What is the Fastest Way to Accumulate Blood Heals?
*****************************************************************************
When swinging the Muramasa as fast as possible, one can achieve around 75
blood heals per minute, or about 4,500 an hour. At this rate, it will take
around 225 hours of continuous sword hacking to accumulate the necessary
1,008,016 blood heals. Alucard will reach Level 99 first, at around 600K
kills. This can be automated using a turbo controller. The best place to do
so is in the Black Marble Gallery just northeast of Dracula, where
respawing Medusas only attack from one direction.
The fastest method is to find the Dark Octopus room in the Reverse Caverns,
where the enemies never stop respawning. By throwing the Dagger sub-weapon
rapidly, one can accumulate blood heals much faster than by simply swinging
the Muramasa. Equip the Blood Cloak to keep Alucard’s stock of Hearts high,
and the Bloodstone to help keep his HP up. Also, equip anything that will
lower INT, such as the Duplicator, to keep the enemies alive and bleeding
longer. It should be noted that the Bloodstone does not make the Muramasa
grow any faster. Even using this method, it is quite a timely task.

6. Muramasa ATT Growth Reference Chart
*****************************************************************************
For reference, this chart illustrates exactly how many blood heals are
required to raise the Muramasa’s ATT at any given point in its growth. It
also illustrates exactly how many total blood heals the Muramasa will have
accumulated at any given point in its growth. When determining what ATT the
Muramasa is currently at, remember not to include Alucard’s STR.

I was originally inspired to write this guide because I was unable to find a
lot of the information online, specifically in regards to concrete numbers. I
ended up doing a ton of research and even maxed my own Muramasa. Furthermore,
I have seen a few misconceptions regarding the growth rate formula; some
people seem to think it is (2x + 10), and many think it is (2x + 12). The
correct formula for the growth rate is (2x + 11). I have personally tested
these numbers and they are 100% correct. I have never seen a concrete number
given as far as the total number of blood heals required and was happy to
finally arrive at an answer and clear up the misconceptions.
First and foremost, I would like to thank CoreyOTM from Hoverview. His
YouTube video provided a kick-off point for me by providing a lot of very
useful information and strategies. While he decided to use the Mermen to max
his Muramasa, he also provided the superior Medusa location, as well as the
Dark Octopus strategy. Furthermore, his failure to calculate the total
number of blood heals sparked an interest in me to solve the problem. I
highly recommend his video, but it should be noted that he used the wrong
growth rate.
