Brave Story: Aratanaru Tabibito (New Traveler)
Japanese Walkthrough Version 1.0

This is my first walkthrough on gamefaqs.com (and in general), so please bear
with me, because although I have a lot of experience reading walkthroughs, I
have little experience writing them. I'm currently in Japan, and a little
bored, so I picked up Brave Story at the local supermarket. I'm also studying
for the MCATs, so updates might be a little sporadic. I'm still playing through
the game, so I'll post updates as I progress through the game.
I have taken only 4 semesters of Japanese in college, so I still have a lot to
learn in Japanese. I'm doing the best I can, but since I'm still advanced
beginner/intermediate level in Japanese, some of my translations might be
wrong. Please feel free to email me with questions or corrections.
Also, if you're having trouble navigating the game in Japanese, please take a
look at my menu translation (also on www.gamefaqs.com).

0.A Introduction:
***********************************************
***********************************************
Brave Stroy: Aratanaru Tabibito is a game made by Game Republic, released in
Japan on 7/8/2006 for the PSP. The premise is based off of the anime movie
Brave Story by Miyuki Miyabe, but the storyline follows a boy (whom you get to
name) on a quest to save his friend, who collapses mysteriously one day during
a walk in a park.
Since I'm a Japanese student, I tend to prefer the JSL romanization of kana,
because it's more logical. Sorry for those readers who are not familiar with
the system. The main differences are: ou -> oo, ei -> ee, shi -> si, chi -> ti,
tsu -> tu, sho -> syo. So whereas under the Hepburn system, you would write
"しつれいしました" as "shitsurei shimashita" in JSL it's written "situree
simasita".
In this walkthrough I'll try to describe all of the steps required to progress,
but I will also include brief explanations of the storyline, from what I can
understand of the Japanese text. Therefore, when it is relevant (or when I feel
like it) I will include the Japanese text along with a translation. Please keep
in mind, though, that I am only a 2nd year student, and as such, probably
pretty bad at translating.
OK! Let's get on with the walkthrough!
0.B Characters and Skills:

************************************************
The format for this section will be as follows:
- Japanese name - Romanization - Translation
-> Level learned
-> BP cost
-> Target area
-> Effect
タツヤ ー Tatsuya
------------------------------------------------
The protagonist of the story. Tatsuya is a kid who travels through the door of
fate, and ends up in another world in order to save his friend Miki back on
Earth. He must become a 旅人、たびびと (tabibito), a traveler, and collect 5
gems, and take them to a goddess in the other world. Once he does that, the
goddess will grant him one wish, and he will be able to save his friend Miki.
ミキ ー Miki
------------------------------------------------
Tatsuya's childhood friend. She's pretty cute, and one day during a walk in the
park, she collapses mysteriously. Apparently the only way to save her is for
Tatsuya to go to another world to find a goddess who will grant him one wish,
if he finds 5 gems scattered across the globe.
Miki does not have any skills (she's in a coma)
ユーの ー Juno
------------------------------------------------
A cute girl, half Nezoku and half Ankazoku (furry ears and a tail) whom Tatsuya
meets within minutes of being in the new world. He saves her from a pack of
wolves, only to find that he saved a spunky girl who makes fun of him for his
height. She's a really strong-willed person, and almost steals the show from
Tatsuya. She's the first person that joins him on his quest to save Miki.
- 癒しの歌 ー iyasi no uta - song of healing
-> Learned: Juno originally has this skill
-> BP cost: 2

1.A Prologue: 運命の扉 ー unmee no tobira - The Door of Fate
***************************************************
The story begins with Tatsuya and Miki sitting on a bench in the park. Like
most couples, the guy isn't paying attention while the girl says random stuff.
In this case, Miki is saying how it's nice to go on a walk every once in a
while. She complains that Tatsuya said he'd go with her to walk her dog,
Sasuke. The first choice you come up to is to respond to her complaints...
->そうだっけ? - soo dakke? - I said that?
->ゲームの方が楽しいよ。 - geemu no hoo ga tanosii yo - My PSP is more
interesting
It doesn't matter which choice you make. She'll just keep doing what girls
always do, which is complain. Or talk about inane things. After a while a frog
appears out of nowhere and gets Sasuke's (the dog) attention, and he goes and
chases after the frog. Miki follows Sasuke, and shortly after you find her on
the ground unconscious.
Scene cut to hospital a few days later, where the hospital director is talking
to Miki's parents in a room, while Tatsuya listens in. The hospital director
says that he doesn't understand the cause of Miki's collapse. He's done all of
the tests possible, but still can't find any apparent problems. He doesn't even
know if she'll regain consciousness. Miki's father cries out in despair, and
Tatsuya escapes to the roof.
There he hears a mysterious woman's voice behind him.
"It's tough to lose something important."
"Poor Miki, at this rate she'll never wake up."
"Tatsuya, don't you want to change such a cruel fate as this?"
"If you so wish it, you can."
"But, in order to change fate, you must endure a long hard journey. Your
courage will be tested to the max."
"If that girl is important to you, stand up!"
At this point, you can choose between two choices:
->怖い ー kowai - I'm scared
->立ち上がる ー tatiagaru (tachi agaru) - Stand up
Choose tatiagaru and you will step through the door of fate and be on your way
to the journey!!
1.B Chapter 1: ラウ導師とおためしの洞窟 ー Rau the Sage and the Cave of Trials
***************************************************
You wake up by a cabin in a forest. There's a chocobo-like bird examining
you... once you get up, approach the bird. The bird can talk! omg! The cute
birds are called おためし鳥 - otamesi tori, or "trial birds" I'll keep calling
them otameshi birds in this walkthrough. Anyway, the bird tells you to prepare
for your journey by examining the pot. You get your first item,
マコの実 ー mako no mi, a mako seed. Take in the lush 3D graphics and then go
into the cottage. Open the treasure chest and you will receive
幻界(ヴィジョン)の地図 ー maborosikai (visyon) no tizu, or "map of
maboroshikai (vision)". This world is literally called maboroshikai, or strange
world. I think the parentheses means that the world is called vision. but I'm
not sure. I'll call it Maboroshikai. To use it, press the L button on the world
map. After you get the map, you should leave the cottage and continue onto the
world map.
On the world map, try out your new map if you would like. Otherwise, continue
northeast to おためしの洞窟 ー otamesi no dookutu, "the cave of trials".
おためしの洞窟 ー The Cave of Trials
----------------------------------------------------
When you enter the cave of trials, you are greeted with more of those otameshi
birds. Here's a rough translation of what they say:
"In the trials, be careful of your life."
"Face the door and flap your wings."
"The monk is yawning."
"If you want to go back, take it back."
"Even if you try for a thousand years, you won't pass."
or something along those lines... continue onto the next room, and you will
meet the four generals of the gods. They say something about granting you the
power to go on your journey. You will be asked what you wish from all four of
the gods. A rough translation of the choices are as follows:
恐れない勇気を! ー osorenai yuuki wo! - "Give me unwavering courage!"
鋼の守りを! ー hagane no mamori wo! - "Give me a steel defense!"
生き残るの為の知恵を! ー ikinokoru no tame no tie wo! - "Give me the wisdom
to survive!"
敵を打ち破る力を! ー teki wo utiyaburu ryoku wo! - "Give me the strength to
strike down my enemies!"
丈夫な身体を! ー zyoobu na karada wo! - "Give me a sturdy body!"
身軽な身体を! ー migaru na karada wo! - "Give me a nimble body!"
体の抵抗力を! ー karada no teekooryoku wo! - "Give my body the power of
resistance!"
心の抵抗力を! ー kokoro no teekooryoku wo! - "Give my heart the power of
resistance!"
This determines your starting stats, and probably your growth as you level up.
For example, picking a steel defense will affect how quickly your defense rises
as you level up. And asking for a nimble body will raise your agility, etc. The
last question asks if you have any doubts. If you pick the first choice, you
will have to answer all four questions again. If you're sure, pick the second
choice to continue.
Go through the door, and you'll enter a room with a strange old guy. This guy
is Rau the sage. After a bit of talking, he'll tell you what your stats are,
depending on what you answered to the generals. The first two numbers are your
strength and wisdom.
力値 ー riki ti - strength
知恵値 ー tie ti - wisdom
守り値 ー mamori ti - defense
速さ値 ー hayasa ti - agility
HP値 ー HP ti - HP
BP値 ー BP ti - BP
After you find out your stats, the old man will talk about the save point and
the other thingy. The blue orb is the save point, and the green prism will
refill all of your HP and BP. After you save, continue onto the next door.
In this room you'll find another one of those cute birds. He'll just repeat
what they said when you first entered the dungeon, so you don't have to talk to
him. In the adjoining rooms, there are bird statues. Arrange them so that all
of them face the doorway and the center room (where the cute green bird is). If
the statue is already facing the center, don't move it, or else you will be
forced to fight some enemies. With this, you've pass the first trial. Which was
really really easy. Oh well, I guess it doesn't take much to be a traveller. Go
through the main door and examine the bird statue there. He'll send you back to
the monk's cabin.
Back in Rau's cabin, he'll explain a few things about the world:
"The world that you are in, maboroshi kai (vision) is something that
運命の女神 ー unmee no megami-sama, "Goddess of Fate" made. The trials are
for people who come to this world from the real world in order to fulfill their
wishes. Firstd off, the cave of trials was to test your merit, and you passed.
From now on you must overcome numerous other trials, and head to
運命の塔 ー unmee no too, "The Tower of Fate". If you can reach that tower,
the goddess will grant the traveler just one wish. But you won't be able to
meet the goddess that easily. "
The next few text boxes goes roughly like this: He asks you to show him your
sword. He says that the traveler's sword (tabibito no ken) reflects your
current power. You and the sword grow together. There are five spots on the
sword that are for inserting 5 jewels which you must find. When you find all 5
jewels, the traveler's sword will take the form of the demonsbane sword. The
demonsbane will open the entrance to the Tower of Fate. After some other words,
he tells you to go to sleep and start your journey tomorrow.
When you wake in the morning, the monk sends you off with a bento :)
items: ラウ導師のお弁当 ー rau doosi no obentoo - Monk Rau's bento, and 3
mako seeds.
The bento restores a large portion of one person's health, and the mako seeds
restore a small portion of one person's health.
He tells you one last thing... When you find one of the five jewels, you can
return only once to the real world. When you go back, you should go see the
person that you most wish to see. With that he sends you off to the city!
1.C Chapter 2: ランカ町の看板娘 ー ranka machi no kanban musume - Lanka
City's Beauty
***************************************************
The title of chapter 2 is pretty funny, actually. kanban musume actually means
a lot more than "beauty" or beautiful girl. The literal meaning is billboard
daughter. Apparently, shopkeepers with beautiful daughters would use them to
entice males to enter their shop, thus, "kanban musume". Japanese people are so
weird.
In any case, you show up in a clearing in the woods beside a save point. Save,
and then go south... suddenly you hear a girl's scream and some angry growling.
Before you approach the wolves, go to the northeast and grab the
キラリ石 ー kirari isi, "kirari stone", and the 干し肉 ー hosiniku, "dried
meat". The stone is often dropped by monsters, and the dried meat can be used
to restore a little bit of health to one person. Now, go back to where you left
the billboard daughter, it's time to rescue her.
When she sees you she says something along the lines of:
"Are you just planning to just stand there and stare, despite a cute girl being
in trouble?"
"Help! You're a man right?"
That spurs you on, and she joins you for the battle.
The battle is against 3 hagure neziookami, or "stray drill wolf". However, the
wolves keep calling their buddies to join the battle, whenever one of them
dies. They're not very hard to handle at all, though. Just keep attacking, and
eventually you'll end the battle.
It looks bleak for the two of them but suddenly you hear the monk's voice,
telling you that when you're in trouble, use the sword (reminiscent of Yoda).
You raise the sword and use the skill otameshi flash! Use the skill when you're
in trouble, and run away, says the monk.
Once the wolves are scared away, you're left with the girl. I'm going to
provide a translation here, each quote signifies a new text box. Don't get used
to it, though, I did this dialogue because it was fairly easy for me, and the
last part is hilarious.
"Woah! What was that just now, demon magic?"
"Before that.. I have to say thanks! Thanks for helping me!"
"My name is ユーノ - yuuno, or "Juno", (according to the opening credit video.)
I live in Lanka city, just ahead."
"I didn't see your face at first, where are you from? Gasara? Tear's Heaven?"
"You came from Nippon...? Where's that? I've never heard of it."
"What happened, why are you making that weird face? Do I have something stuck
on my face?"
"What? These ears?"
"I'm a mix between the 'Nezoku' (lit. Ne-race) and the 'Ankazoku' (lit.
Anka-race) ... you got a problem with that? No way... you haven't heard of the
nezoku?"
"Hahaha, that's a hilarious joke."
"..wait. You don't look like you're joking."
"Also, that magic you just did back there..."
"No way! Are you a tabibito? (lit. Traveler)"
->そうだけど ー yeah...
->旅人が珍しいの? ー are tabibito rare? (this is the one I chose, if you
want to follow in the dialogue)
"Obviously they're rare! Tabibito only come from the outside world right?
Furthermore, they come only about once every 10 years."
"Whaaaa- Hoooo- Wooooah! So you're a tabibito!"
"But... I was thinking a tabibito would be someone a little more adult-like."
"So a kid like you can become a tabibito, too, huh."
->ほっといてよ ー leave me alone (I chose this one)
->キミだって子供じゃないか ー but you're a kid too
"Ahaha, sorry sorry. Are you mad?"
"Anyway, tabibito-san, what's your name?"
"Hmm, Tatsuya, huh."
"Hey, Tatsuya, won't you come to my house? My family runs an inn at Lanka."
"I wanna thank you for saving me, so stay at my inn!"
"Okok, staaaaay!! It's ok, right? Right. good, good." (Woah.)
"You're a boy, so don't worry about the little details."
"Lanka city is south of this forest."
"So now that we've decided everything, lets head towards Lankaaaaaa!!" (yeah,
she's weird)
Ok, so after all that talking, you're given a mini-tutorial about BP.
You and your friends can use 勇技 ー yuugi, or "brave skills" by gathering
BP. You can gain BP by damaging enemies. The more you damage an enemy, the more
your BP increases. Also, you can't use brave skills until you find a jewel.
Juno can use her 癒しの歌 ー iyasi no uta, "song of healing" to recover a bit
of HP.
Ok, now, finally, you get to control Tatsuya. Head to the southwest, but before
you head out to the next area, take a right and head to the northeast to get a
treasure chest with a スナイプスボウ ー sniper's bow. Be sure not to miss
this weapon, because Juno will be using it for quite a while. You're sure to
run into at least 4 enemy encounters before you reach the treasure chest,
though. The random encounter rate in this game is too high, and pretty annoying
after a while.
Once you're in the next area head to the Northeast and follow the path past a
save point, and out to the world map. From there head south to get to Lanka
city.
ランカの町 ー Lanka City
------------------------------------------------
When you arrive at Lanka city, go to the inn, which is the large building
straight ahead of you, with the sign of a bed on it. When you enter, you're
greeted with the barking of Juno's pet, Kesusa (interestingly, the palindrome
of SaSuKe, Miki's dog). Juno's parents were worried about her returning late.
Juno explains that she couldn't find any game, so she ended up going into the
forest. (strange, though, the world map is full of rabbits wanting to attack
you.) In any case, she explains how you saved her from the wolves, and her
parents thank you. She then goes on to explain that you're a tabibito, which
surprises the father very much, apparently. In any case, they insist that you
stay for the night, and have dinner with them as well, so until Ann (the
mother) fixes dinner, she asks Juno to take you around town and show you
everything.
Once you're out of the house, go to the northeast, to the building with a red
dragon symbol on it. She explains that any building with a red dragon symbol is
a Highlander's Branch. Highlanders are people that protect the city, and the
Branch is their headquarters, and every city has one... but she can't explain
very well, so she leaves it to the man behind the counter to do the explaining.
Fraus, the guy behind the counter, explains that Highlanders are people who
protect the city by exterminating monsters, catching thieves, and doing other
things like that. Juno says that she was hunting in the forest when she was
surrounded by wolves, and you showed up and saved her. Fraus says that that was
really dangerous, and that even (unskilled) Highlanders get injured when
fighting with monsters. However, Highlanders are the inheritors of the will of
the legendary Fire Dragon. They are the ones who keep the peace and protect the
safety of the people of Maboroshikai. Therefore, even when a few Highlanders go
up against monsters, they won't lose their heart or power. He says if you want
to learn more, talk to the Astrologer in the bar. There are some perks to being
a Highlander. You can receive money for defeating monsters, and among the most
skillful highlanders, some are really rich. Unfortunately, Lanka isn't
recruiting any new Highlanders currently, but maybe other cities might be. He
tells you to ask the person beside him about tips for battle, and that ends
your trip to the Highlander's branch.
Now, check the pot beside the pub for 勇気の製作図1 ー yuuki no seesakuzu 1
"Courage manual 1". Now, go check the two pots outside of the ダルババ屋 -
darubaba ranch, (the building with a cart sign) for a mako seed and kirari
stone.
Head to the weapon shop (the building with a sword sign on it). Juno explains
that the building with a sword on it is the weapon shop (duh). You can buy
swords, armor, etc. at the weapon shop. She asks if you want to go look at the
weapons.. but you say you have no money! AND you don't know how to make any.
She says that as for her, she hunts, and takes the meat and other things that
the monsters drop, and sells them at the shop. (You can sell things like the
kirari stones here.. they're not good for anything else).
Talk to the shop owner, and he'll ask if you want to buy anything. The menu is
as follows:
買う ー かう ー kau, buy
売る ー うる ー uru, sell
装備 ー そうび ー soobi, equip
やめる ー yameru, quit
You should sell your kirari stones, and buy what you can. (I would buy the
厚皮のこて - atukawa no kote, "thick hide gauntlets" for Juno, because her
defense is pretty low and she needs as much help as she can get.)
After that, go check the pot beside your house for a
ねじオオカミの肉 ー neziookami no niku, "screw wolf meat" and then approach
the woman standing there.
She's dropped an accessory that her boyfriend gave her, in Lanka Forest. Her
boyfriend is an accessory craftsman, and the thing she lost is the first ring
that he ever made, which he gave to her as a present (woah, she's in big
trouble). Of course, this wouldn't be an RPG if you weren't required to go get
a ring for someone. So, Juno offers to go look for the ring for her, and she
drags you along with her. Now you have to go to Lanka Forest again.
Leave the city and head north to the forest where you came from.
ランカの森 ー Lanka Forest
------------------------------------------------
Once you enter Lanka Forest, you can save if you so feel inclined. Go north to
the main area, take a left (down) turn and go to the furthest southwest corner
to get a 火のかけら ー hi no kakera "fire shard". This is an ingredient for
crafting accessories. Now go all the way North and go to the next area. Here
you can turn right and get the treasure chest if you didn't get it the first
time. Otherwise, continue all the way north to find the ring that Mary dropped.
Now, you can go back to Lanka city or go to the left and down to get a
ケータイ寝袋 ー keetai nebukuro, "sleeping bag" and then up and to the right
to get a treasure box with 30 temu in it. After you get the chests, return to
Lanka City
ランカの町 ー Lanka City
------------------------------------------------
When you return to Lanka City, talk to Mary, the girl beside the inn, whose
ring you found. As a reward, she gives you the
アクセサリーブック ー akusesarii bukku, "accessory book", which can now be
chosen under the main menu. The accessory book has information about
accessories that you can craft, along with the materials needed, and the
effects of the accessory. She also gives you a 工芸キット ー koogee kitto,
"Craft kit". This becomes accessible in the main menu as well.
She explains the basics of accessory crafting. Basically, you can make
accessories by finding the instructions for specific accessories, gathering the
materials, and making them with your kit. Once you find one set of instructions
for an accessory, you can make as many as you want, as long as you gather
enough materials to do so. You should already have found one by the pub. Now
you can make it, if you have the right materials.
Then she gives you a manual, 生命の製作図1 ー seemee no seesakuzu 1, "Life
manual 1". She then mentions that you can dissolve accessories back into their
component parts. She tells you to go see her boyfriend in the accessory shop by
the weapon shop.
In the accessory shop, talk to the person in the far upper corner, behind the
bench. He tells you about アクセサリー解体 ー accessory dissolution. You can
dissolve accessories back into their component parts. Therefore, if you have
accessories that are made with components that are hard to come by, you can
dissolve them to get the rare components, and make other accessories with them.
As a present to get you started, he gives you a ツムリンの緑甲羅 ー tumurin
no ryoku koora, "tsumurin's carapace" and 2 火のかけら ー hi no kakera, "fire
shard".
Next he explains the accessories' effects. He says that after you make
accessories, you have to equip them for them to be any use (obviously). He also
says that there are rings and bracelets that increase your strength and
protects you from status abnormalities (状態異常 ー zyootai izyoo).
Anyway, after a long explanation, you can finally leave, and go back to your
house and have dinner. Before you do so, you might want to make some
生命の指輪 seimei no yubiwa (ring of life) if you have the right ingredients.
Go back to the inn, where you will have dinner with Juno and her family. Juno's
parents make some good-natured jokes about how Juno's starting to like Tatsuya.
Juno's father suggests that Tatsuya go to リリス ー Lilith next. Then Juno
set us up the bomb: she's going to go with Tatsuya to Lilith. Of course her
mother complains a little, but her father says that she should go on this trip,
because it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. Actually, the father said that
he went on a journey with a tabibito when he was younger, too. He believes that
Juno will obtain something she couldn't have obtained otherwise. Then they ask
you what you think:
-> 喜んで ー yorokonde - "Gladly!"
-> それはちょっと。。。 ー sore wa tyotto... - "Uh, wait a minute..."
It doesn't matter which one you pick. If you pick the second one she threatens
to cry, and then says she's coming anyway. So get a good night's sleep and you
set out tomorrow.
In the morning, they prepare to leave, and Juno's father gives her a charm that
he has had for a long time. You receive お守り ー omamori, "A charm". They
tell you to go west and cross the Grandala river to get to Lilith.
As you leave Lanka, Juno asks...
"Umm, before we start our journey, I wanted to ask you something..."
"What kind of wish do you want to be granted?"
"Oh, I see, you want to cure your childhood friend Miki's illness."
"So, in order to do that, you're going to collect the 5 jewels."
"Thanks for telling me, I had to ask!"
"I couldn't be a true companion on this journey if I didn't know the reason."
"OK! I'm going to help in any way I can so that your wish gets granted!"
"...So, tell me one last thing."
"Miki.. what's she like?"
"What? Somehow I remind you of her? How?"
-> 強引なとこ ー kooin na toko - "You're just as bossy as she is"
-> かわいいとこ ー kawaii toko - "You're just as cute as she is" (I chose
this one)
"What? I can't believe you!" [Pushes you like Elaine from Seinfeld. You fall
over.]
"S, sorry, Tatsuya! Don't die before we begin our journey!" (hahaha)
(I couldn't help it, I reloaded the game and chose the other one as well)
"What did you say!?!? I'm bossy?!" [You run away]
"Wait! I want to hear an explanation!!"

Thanks for using my FAQ! I'm still updating as I progress through the game, but
as I'm also doing neuroscience research and studying for the MCATs, updates
might be a little slow.
Thanks to Jim Breen's WWWJDIC Server,
"
http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/[tilde]jwb/wwwjdic.html", (notice that shiftJIS
does not recognize the tilde symbol, so type that part in yourself). which
hosts the main dictionary that I get ALL of my kanji and other Japanese-English
translations from. I've spent hours with that server, trying to figure out
translations for this FAQ.
