This small FAQ will answer some questions brought up by users in the forums
about certain hidden or new features to this PSP re-release of Ape Escape.
The game is a direct port of the original PSX title, with some changes on the
minigames and controls.
I will not detail the locations of monkeys, specter coins, or time attack
strategies because there are plenty of great FAQs detailing them. Make
sure to check the original PSX page for ape escape, because those FAQs don't
display on the PSP page for some reason.
In order to get 100% on your save file, you must catch all 204 monkeys,
including specter in the final battle. You also have to get all 60 of the
specter coins. Lastly, you must GOLD rank all of the time attacks for
each stage.
The enemy book is that green book in the save menu listing. You might notice
that some enemies are missing from your entries. The main reason for this is
that you may not have attempted to defeat some of them. For example, in my
playthrough I missed the crabs on the beach. The easiest way to make the enemy
appear is to defeat a good number of them.
One thing I haven't confirmed is whether or not you must defeat them with a
specific weapon. It seems that some enemies did not appear in my book because
I did not use the stun club on them. So if you're having trouble, go back a
couple times to defeat some more, and try different weapons.
One last tip: The ages in which the enemies are listed in the book do NOT
necessarily match the ages they appear in the level. Just keep your eyes
peeled. Enter an age, defeat the enemy, and exit. Rinse and repeat.
Enemies that gave me a tricky time:
Crabs - they don't hurt you, so they don't seem like enemies but they
in fact are. You need to hit them twice. they appear on the
prehistoric beach.
Wild Boar - This one is a pain because there was only one place I could
locate it, and that's the first stage of the modern era. It's
right by the temple stairs. Defeat it and reenter the level to
repeat the process. After a couple, it worked.
Mushroom Turtle - these are in the TV station, walking over the room with
the tank and the green trail. You can't beat them without the magic
punch, so you'll need to come back and wack a couple to get them
in the book. At least, I didn't get them even though I used the tank
the first time around.
Super Monkey Mech - this is the pink giant robo that appears in the next
to last part of specter's floating castle. It shoots from
behind as you try to get to the top. I tried normal slingshot
bullets to no avail. That's because you need to use the stun
club, explosive bullets, or the magic punch to beat them. I'm
pretty sure that one round of all those bots will make them
appear in your book if you missed them.
Forgive me if those names don't match exactly, I played the japanese version.
But I think you get the idea :)
3) How do I get Specter, Jake, and Casi in Snowkids Racing?!
If you've played the minigame to death and not unlocked characters, fret not.
The key is your completion in the main game.
Jake and Casi become playable once you catch Specter in the last battle.
Specter becomes playable once you attain 100% completion.
So...beat the game first, then the minigame!
To the best of my knowledge, you cannot get red pipotron in this game.
If I'm wrong, please email me and tell me how!
4) How do I get Specter and Blue pipotron in Specter Boxing??
Easy--win! This game is one where you have to beat it to unlock extras.
My no-fail strategy is to rinse and repeat Square - Square - Right (toward your
opponent). As long as you get him cornered and press square with the right
rythm, you can't be beat. Also, if it isn't clear, mash EVERY button you can
when the red-blue line appears, it's not about how fast you can press
one button.
Once you beat blue pipotron, the grand champ, you can now play as specter.
You can't select blue pipotron in tournament, but he becomes unlockable in the
second mode that isn't selectable at first--and that's survival mode. Play
survival all you want, but you won't get anything for it.
5) How do I get Specter and Yellow Pipotron in Table Tennis??
Again, win! This game can be hard, though. Best advice I can give is, use the
apes with fast smash specials like the white one. Keep smashing and practice
hitting at angles, because the computer rarely can catch a fast smash
left or right.
Once you win, you unlock specter. To the best of my knowledge, you can't get
Yellow Pipotron. If I'm wrong, email me and tell me how!
6) I found this strange plant with a banana/coconut sign. What is it??
I have to admit, this was my favorite addition to the game.
You can grow plants! Yes, there are 6 in all, 3 banana and 3 coconuts.
Here's how:
First, clear specter land for the first time. Once you do, THEN the plants
appear.
Now you need to retrace your steps to old stages, and here's the locations:
(A) JUNGLE RIVER - Go to the place where the wooden specter statue is. Now,
head into the back where you fought the giant tree enemy the monkey jumps
into, and right around the back is your first pot.
(B) DEXTER'S ISLAND - In the cage with the sea turtle. Open the cage, then swim
into the bottom left corner. Can't miss it.
(C) SNOWY MAMMOTH - This one's a tad tricky. Remember the giant propeller?
Go there. Now when you jump up to the igloo where the monkey was, you'll
see red pipes to the south and east of you. A pot lies atop them.
(D) CRUMBLING CASTLE - Get to the castle's roof (you can easily do this if you
glide over from the eastern cliffs near the waterfall). Now run as if you
were going back into the castle--but wait! It's very hard to see with the
camera, but there's a ledge in the north-east corner of the roof. You have
to take a bit of a leap of faith, and on that ledge is your next pot.
(E) SPECTER'S FACTORY - Remember the room with the pipe you lower by rotating a
wheel? Below the pipe is an area with a monkey, some energy chips, and
magama patches. Facing that pipe, the Northwest corner of the entire room
has the pot suspended over some magma. Use the flier to jump up and
grab it.
(F) SPECTER LAND - This one was tricky! Go to the floating fortress entrance
and run to the Eastern exit. It takes you to a room with rotating
propellers. You need to climb up the eastern wall and next to a large
energy chip is the last pot.
===============================================================================
Once you catch your pots, they will automatically be placed next to the save
station computer. Bananas on the left, Coconuts on the right. But they don't
just grow...you need to grow them. The trick is, energy chips. Not the little
triangles, but the big ones--the same ones you need to unlock parts of Casi's
data. My best suggestion is go to crumbling castle, you can easily run in a
straight line and collect 4-5, exit the stage and repeat. If you kill those
onion enemies you might get lucky and find an extra one or two. I didn't count
how many you need, but it will take a lot of energy chips to grow your pots
into full plants.
When fully grown, the bananas will be yellow and the coconuts will be brown.
You can jump on top of the plants, too...but that's about it.
You KNOW it's totally worth it! Go grow those plants now!
===============================================================================
Aside from you wanting to do everything in the game? No. Casi's data only
unlocks as you collect energy chips. Worst of all, it's random which ones
unlock. There's 100 in all, so you would expect 100 chips total, but that's
not the case. You'll see sections you might have completed lighting up
because--you guessed it--the chips sometimes count for data you've already
aquired. Good luck if you decide to go for all 100. You get to pat yourself
on the back if you do!
The data is just funny quotes and expressions. I'd write them out but I didn't
play the english version, and translating them is a pain ><
