I always wondered how many people actually played the original Zone of the
Enders (ZOE from herein). Everybody I know who bought it were only after the
Metal Gear Solid 2 demo. But packaged with that demo was a diamond in the
rough. ZOE was really the first game to combine a compelling storyline with
arcade style mech action. While true mech fans brushed it off in favor of
Armored Core, I fell in love with Kojima's new masterpiece.
As impressed as I was with the first installment, words can not express how
pleased I am with Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner. This game is better
in almost every aspect then the original. It has more action, more weapons,
and more story telling. It has everything that an action fan could want while
also appealing to fans of the RPG genre.
The story starts on the Jupiter moon of Callisto. Your Dingo Egret, an
ex-BAHRAM soldier turned miner. While traveling in his LEV he picks up strong
Metatron readings which lead him to Jehuty. Suddenly BAHRAM attacks him and
his friends. Using Jehuty he defeats the enemy forces and escapes setting
events in motion that will send him on a mission to save Mars and the very
existence of the human race.
Like the original game you have a standard set of normal, dash, and burst
attacks which are supplemented by sub weapons. Not much has changed as far
as basic attacks are concerned with one exception. Now the homing lasers can
lock onto multiple targets. This is a valuable tool because at times you will
need to fight a hundred or so enemies at once.
Also new is the use of a sub gauge. It's like your Energy gauge, but it is
consumed when you use sub weapons. A lot of the old sub weapons have
returned, but a few new ones deserve mentioning. The homing missiles are the
most useful. Like the homing laser, but they pack a bigger punch and
automatically lock on to your nearest foes. The grab technique has been
expanded to include new throwing moves. You can also grab objects in the
field (or enemies!) and use them as shields or weapons.
The soundtrack once again is phenomenal. I was really impressed with ZOE's
soundtrack and thought it could not be matched until I heard ''Beyond the
Bounds'', the opening theme to the Second Runner. Also the sounds and
clashes of battle are still there as well as ADA's comments that get your
adrenaline pumping.
There is one major problem with the Second Runner: slowdown. The frame rate
is not steady throughout and often drops especially at specific points in
the game where the screen is filled with enemy units. I feel there is no
excuse for slowdown. Every game should be able to run at a solid 60fps, but
since this is the games only flaw I can look past it, especially when it
has tons of revolutionary gameplay to offer.
Replay value all depends on what kind of gamer you are. While the actual
game is shorter then its predecessor (5 and a half hours) New Game +
option allows you to replay the game with new Jehuty forms and the ability
to unlock new missions. The added replay is minimal at best, but what is
really going to add hours to your time is the ranking system. If your the
kind of player who must achieve perfect ranks then you have your work cut
out for you. Otherwise you won't have much ambition to complete the game
more then twice.
The Second Runner is one of the best action games to grace the PS2. Fans
of the series should definitely pick it up, but those new to the genre
would benefit the most from just renting. After all its easily beatable
in a rental period.

If you ask me this is a much simpler HUD then the original game. Lets break it
down.
1. Jehuty. Jehuty is that big clunk of metal in the middle of your screen. You
may have noticed that when projectiles are fired at you rings appear around
Jehuty. Each ring symbolizes a projectile and the color of the ring tells you
how far away it is. Once the ring starts turning red its time to dash away.
Also note the aiming cursor.
2. Gauges. Look at the bottom of your screen and you will notice a couple of
colored bars. Once is your energy(NRG). It depletes when you take damage.
When it becomes completely empty its game over. The other is your sub gauge.
In ZOE2 sub weapons no longer have ammo that deplete the sub gauge. When it
reaches zero you can no longer use sub weapons. These guages can be
refilled by collecting certain items and the sub gauge can be refilled by
destroying enemies
3. Sub Weapon Menu. Look to the left and you will see a sub weapon menu. To
access the menu press L1. The game will pause and allow you to select a
weapon. Activate your sub weapon by pressing CIRCLE.

-Callisto-
The game begins near the place where the first game left off. A moon orbiting
Jupiter called Callisto. Initial impressions tell us this is a mining colony
with the strange LEV's and all. Soon into the first scene we are introduced to
Dingo Egret. And apparantly there is a metatron reading ahead.
When the cutscene ends you will gain control of Dingo in his LEV. Just follow
the arrow to proceed with the story. There is nothing to explore. If you play
around with the buttons you will notice that TRIANGLE boosts you vertically
and R2 boosts you horizontily. Try combing those two buttons for faster
travel. Eventually you will come to a mountain and you will need to do this
combination to get over it.
After climbing over the mountain another cutscene will start. It seems Dingo
has stumbled upon something more then just simple metatron. Soon afterwards
BAHRAM attacks. After his LEV is damaged Dingo has no choice but to take
control of Jehuty and fight.
Your very first fight is against two raptors. They are easily destroyed by
mashing the SQUARE button. After the battle we meet ADA.
ADA will now give you battle training if you so wish. Once your done select
Exit. Be warned however that this walkthrough assumes you know how to
control Jehuty proficiently. Either go through the training program or
read the game basics section if you can not.
After the training program your buddy Rick seems to be in trouble. Go to him
by following the arrow. You will have to fight 3 sets of enemies.Destroy
them with your homing lasers and take out whatever is left by using your
slash attack. Eventually you will come to a cracked stone wall.Use your
burst attack to open it up to reveal your first boss fight.

###########################BOSS: Ardjet##############################
Ardjet has a few attacks the most annoying of which is her wisps. She
can either shot a few at you or summon a horde of them. The singles
are easy to dodge, but when she gets a bunch of them its time to bust
out the homing lasers. With her wisps gone fly over to her and slash
away. She will of course try to slash you back and grab you.
When Ardjet's life is low she will crawl into a fetal position and
release a powerful beam. When she does this dashing left or right
makes it easy to dodge.

After the fight she will fly away to her mother ship. And like any natural
bornsoldier you follow her.

Watch the cutscenes and then engage the Raptors and Spiders. Easy enough just
use blade attacks. In the next room you will be introduced to your first Sub
Weapon.

|Grab is easy enough to use. Activate it in your |
|sub weapon and pres CIRCLE near a grabable item.|
|When you have grabed something you can use it as|
|a shield by pressing R1 or use it as a weapon by|
|pressing SQUARE. Enemies can also be grabed and |
|used in the same fashion. |

After the Grab tutorial you will enter a room that contains an enemy called a
Celler. These things regenerate enemies so destroying it is your first
priority. Mop up the rest of the enemies and continue on.
New enemies GALORE!!! This one is called the Mummyhead. It can shield and has
a powerful double beam attack that can kick your butt. Eliminate these nasty
things first.

Don't go into the next room just yet. Return to the previous area to recieve
an Extra Mission file. Use Grab to get it.Continue on and you will come to a
cutscene followed by an easy boss fight.

A piece of cake battle if youve mastered Grab. You will discover that
your energy attacks have no effect on this familiar foe. But there is
hope! See those vertical steel beams? Grab them and throw'em at her.
Soon she will become impaled and victory will be yours.

-Deimos Station-
As soon as you regain control of Jehuty go through the door to view another
cutscene. Then turn left and go to the end of the hall and yet another cut
scene happens. Apparantly you need to find this Taper guy who is hiding
somewhere on the station in either Cargo Bay A, B, or C.

It is easy to get lost in this station and the map in the menu screen is very
helpful. If you ever get lost or cant find something use this map.

Goto Cargo A since its the closest. When you enter Taper gives you a clue as
to which box he is hiding in. When you think you know what crate he is in
shoot it to view a cutscene. If you get it wrong all the crates are destroyed
and you have to go to another cargo bay and try again. Since the crate he is in
is random I can't tell you where he is. You'll just have to figure this one out
on your own. Also not that it is possible to kill Taper if you use burt attacks
on the crate which means Game Over!
Once you find Taper and view the cutscene GRAB him. Now open the map. See that
bright red dot? Thats where you need to go. When you encounter enemies you can
either drop him and fight or use him to fight which will generate some comical
remarks. Make sure that heal him by rpessing R2 when his NRG gets too low.
Before you embark on your escape he will give you the sub weapon GEYSER.

|GEYSER has a few useful purposes throughout the |
|game. Basically what it does is trap your enemy |
|allowing you to strike him without fear of |
|retalliation. To use it activate it on your sub |
|weapon menu. Lock on to your enemy and press |
|Circle. If you press it hard it will focus on |
|one enemy, softly and it will spread to multiple|
|enemies |

In order to continue through this area there will be several times when you
will be required to obtain a key. The key can found on the enemies so just kill
everything and the doors should open for you.

For those of you who do not know how to read a map here are the directions from
Cargo Bay A. Facing North take the right side door and turn left. Follow the
long corridor til you get to some doors. Take the right one. Continue on and
you will be in Cargo Bay B. There is a metatron here. After picking it up
continue through the opposite side exit and then make a left in the corridor.
At the end make another left through the door. Again exit through the door on
the other side then make a right down the corridor. Make another right when you
get to the doors. Continue on to the exit and make a left to complete your
mission.
Once Taper has escaped you will encounter a new type of enemy. When a commander
is in an enemy set the battle becomes much more difficult. Obviously you must
eliminate the commander first. You have two options. First if you have faith in
your energy blade skills you can take him out that way, but it has to be fast or
else the rest of the group will punish you. If that is not working for you
Geyser certainly works well. Use GEYSER by pressing CIRCLE lightly. This will
buy you more then enough time to eliminate the commander.

After the cutscene you will enter a boss battle.

#########################BOSS: VIC VIPER#############################
Mr. Viper here is probably my favorite boss just because his mech is
is so cool. Reminds me of Macross. Anyways this guy will attack you
either from affar with some energy attack or up close with some
punches. His ring attack is easy enough to dodge and homing lasers
should do the trick here. When he gets up close defend against his
punches and then attack before he flies of again.
An extra mission file can be picked up during this fight. While
fighting you will notice a gap in the canyon that sort of looks like
an entrance. This is Capri Canyon. Right above the entrance is a rock
formation that can be blasted open. If you have the WISP sub weapon
from a previous game you can pick this file up. If not you will have
to wait until your second playthrough.

|After defeating Vic Viper you will recieve the |
|sub weapon GUANTLET. GUANTLET is a physical |
|that can penetrate shields and guarding. If you |
|through GUANTLET at an enemy against the wall |
|you will do extra damage. |

There are several extra mission files for you to pick up before entering Capri
Canyon. Near the metatron ore there are 2 more rock formations you can destroy
to unveil more files. There is also a file underneath the bridge where the
wrecked train is located.
Once you pick up the metatron ore Naritas will attack you. These nasty robots
defend often making it difficult to dispatch them. Guantlet is your best
friend here as it will break through there guard. After a few Narita's are
destroyed ADA will say something like "Estimated time of combat is 90 seconds".
Once you here this press L3 and a timer of 1:30 will appear on the screen. Kill
all the Narita's in the time limit and a extra mission file will appear by the
entrance of Capri Canyon.

(Chapter 5_____________)***Unlocking the Path*******************ZOE3.5*********
-Capri Canyon-
Once you enter Capri Canyon the path will branch into three seperate paths. For
now the middle one is locked. In order to unlock it we will need to destroy the
two locks at the end of the side paths. Let's go ahead and take the left path
first. As you cut through enemies you will notice some enemies have "Keys". It
will be neccessary to destroy these enemies before moving on.

When you come to the intersection take the left path and you will see a
Metatron ore. Behind it on the ground is an extra mission file. There is also
a chance to unlock a V.S. mech here. You will notice that there is a pile of
boulders in this area blocking off which would seem to be another path. If this
is your second playthrough you can blast this wall open using the Vector
Cannon. If this is your first time through the game you must be patient and
wait until your next game. Once you have blasted through the boulders continue
down the path and you will be forced to fight Anubis. Defeat him and a VS MECH
icon will appear. Grab it to unloack him in the versus mode. Now you will be
transported right to the next boss battle. However if you could not get this
far you will have to continue unlocking the gate.

Now continue down the path you were previously on. Once you get to the end
shoot the structure a few times to destroy the first lock. Now retrace your
steps pas the main gate and on to the right hand path. Follow it and destroy
the enmies along the way. Again you will encounter enemies with keys that need
to be destroyed first. Once you destroy the last lock a groupd of Mummyheads
with a commander will appear. Press L2 a couple of times to immediately lock
on to the commander. If you do not destroy the commander within seconds the
Mummyheads will overwhelm you and most likely kill you. Use GUANTLET and GEYSER
if neccessary. You will now obtain the sub weapon PHALANX.

Go back to the previously locked gate and pass through it to initiate a boss
fight.

Ok folks its the same as last time. Her shield is inpenetrable. You
need something physical. YOU NEED GUANTLET. GUANTLET will make short
work of her. However if GUANTLET isn't helping you a whole lot you
can always grab those plates to guard her attacks and then to throw
them at her. After you take half of her life away a cutscene will
occur.

It's time to finish this fight. If you haven't noticed already your
surrounded by an electirc cage. Needless to say you get hurt if you
run in to it. Which brings us to the strategy of our battle. You
can't hurt Viola using grab, because there is nothing to grab and
throw at her. However, if you can back her into the fence and trap
her their the fence will do plenty of damage. You can go about this a
couple of ways. You can do some old fashioned energy blade attacks
until she backs into the wall or you can let her charge you, then
move to the side, and let her run into it herself. Either way she
be toast after a few shocking moments.

You will now be in Vascillia Colony were a bunch of hot heads in LEV's are
destroying the entire place just to kill a few bad guys. It is your mission to
rid the colony of BAHRAM forces while limiting civilian casualties and building
destruction. Do a good job because your being graded.
How to get a good grade:
This is not real tough. First use geyser on the LEV's so they dont shoot up
buildings. Then just follow the arrows and destroy the Spiders. Try and draw
their attention away from buildings so you dont get marked down for destroying
buildings.
Once you get your grade you will have to chase down and destroy that train. At
this point the game becomes a pseudo rail shooter. ADA activates the automatic
pilot so all you have to do is aim and shoot. You get 5 minutes to destroy this
train (10 on easy) which is way too much time. The best way to tackle this is to
use homing lasers. It's cheap on the sub guage and it's your only efficient mass
attack as of now. Everytime you destroy a car an enemy set will attack you. It
might be a good idea to use GUANTLET (or even COMET if your having trouble) on
the Naritas and Cyclops. Just don't depelete your sub guage or you will have to
wait before you can shoot homing lasers again.

This battle is like all the other ones. You need to grab something to
shield you and then switch over to GUANTLET and let her have it. In
this case its Clods and they just don't "let" you grab them. You will
need to rough them up a bit. If they try to escape press R2 to put on
the squeeze. After the battle you will recieve the VECTOR CANNON.

Her frame may be destroyed, but not her program. She infects Ardjet
and now you have to delete her. Do do that first you must rid her of
her shielding. This done simply by stunning her and then using GRAB
on her. How do you stun her? Just swing your laser sword at the same
time she does. GRAB her 4 times and the shielding will be removed.
Part 2 is next. Now she is much more violent attacking with Wisps and
charging. As soon as her attack sequence is complete she will do some
sword dancing with you. Stun and GRAB her in the same manner as
before. This time it will take 7 grabs to permmanmently delete her
from the face of the....er Mars.

Uh oh things don't look so good. Poor Ken is gonna fry if you dont do
something. Thankfully you got WISP. Use it to pull her up. Set her down on a
platform and defeat the key type enemies to open up higher levels. Once you get
to the top view the cutscene.

enemies or objects. You can swing them around as weapons, use them to block, or
throw them at enemies.

Drastically improved from the last game. As a matter of fact its completely
different. Throwing geyser at an enemy completely immobilizes them for a
period of time. One can imagine this is useful throughtout the entire game.

Another sub weapon returning from the original game. It sprays bullets in
all directions. Useful for mosquitos, but thats it. An even then Homing
lasers are still more efficient.

Probably the most damaging attack in the game. But since its so slow I
onlyused it twice. Once when I had to destroy the ships and at the final
boss battle (you'll know what I mean).

This sub is awesome. Grab anything you want from long distances. I used it all

HA! I never used this sub once in this game or the last one. Its basically a
large laser lance that deals out a lot of damage. To bad its slow and hard to

A must have Sub Weapon. It acts as a super shield that also heals you. Useful
for when you dont have a metatron nearby.

This is one of the best sub weapons in the game next to Zero Shift. This sub
weapon sprays out a bunch of missles that home in on enemies. No targeting
required like homing lasers.
Press CIRCLE to use. The longer you press it the more missles you will fire.

Much more useful then most people think. While its primary purpose, laying them
in the air and waiting for an enemy to run into them, blows they can be of
great use when Jehuty GRABS them and throws them at enemies doing a crapload of
unblockable damage. Perfect against those mummyheads. Not advised to use in
groups. Its expensive on the sub gauge.

Unanimously regarded as the single greatest Sub Weapon. Zero Shift teleports
you instantly to an enemy and stuns them. With Zero Shift you will be so fast
its ridiculous. It also consumes 0 sub energy.
