                         +-----===============-----+
                               VERSION HISTORY
                          +----===============----+

=======================
Version 1.08 - 08/07/06
=======================
-Just a quick update to revise contact information and other minor details.
Please note that I will no longer respond to emails sent to the old address.

=======================
Version 1.07 - 09/11/03
=======================
-Updated the Legal Notice above to reflect the fact that my guide can now be
found at www.neoseekers.com as well as GameFAQs.
-Made a few more very minor changes.

=======================
Version 1.06 - 08/23/03
=======================
-Made some (very) minor changes. I probably won't be working on this guide much
in the near future, since I feel I've basically accomplished what I initially
set out to do. I will probably finish the non-database Gnosis list when I play
through the game a second time, whenever that will be. Until then, I consider
the guide more or less done.

=======================
Version 1.05 - 08/03/03
=======================
-Changed the year in the date at the top of the guide from 08 to 03. Whoops.
-Added the last two Gnosis Database entries, Azazel and Oudogogue.
-Started on the non-Database Gnosis list.

=======================
Version 0.90 - 07/29/03
=======================
-Added neat graphics above.
-Made some aesthetic improvements (hopefully) and other revisions.
-Added Analysis info in the Database section (missing 2).

=======================
Version 0.75 - 07/28/03
=======================
-First version, including a list of all Gnosis found in the Database.

===========================
1.1 - Purpose of This Guide
===========================
I am writing this guide because there seems to be a great deal of confusion
about exactly which Gnosis will or will not appear in the Database. Some
people seem to think that it's a bug that certain Gnosis don't appear. I don't
believe that. Hopefully this guide will shed some light on the subject, so that
completionists can be satisfied that they do, in fact, have a complete a Data-
base as possible.

Just for the record, many of the things mentioned in this guide are either my
own observations, or the observations of someone on the message board. Short of
the Gnosis names and Analysis info, nothing contained in this guide should be
construed as absolute fact.

Also, although it should probably go without saying, this guide will contain
some (rather minor) spoilers, so be warned.

Lastly, let me point out that this guide is based on the North American release
of Xenosaga Episode 1: Der Wille zur Macht. This is the only version of the
game I am familiar with, and therefore the only version to which this guide is
intended to apply.

==================================================
1.2 - Some Common Questions, Some Possible Answers
==================================================
Q. What is this 'Gnosis Database' you speak of?
A. OK, so no one actually asked this. But for the sake of being complete, the
Gnosis database is one of two databases you have access to in Xenosaga Episode
I (the other being the Glossary). You first gain access to the database very
early in the game (I think just after you first leave the Realian Lab on the
Woglinde). You will be alerted via email when the Database first becomes
available, and you can access it through the Unus Mundus Network (U.M.N).

Q. What is the purpose of the Database?
A. The (Gnosis) Database keeps track of *some* of the Gnosis you have defeated
in combat. Once you kill a new type of Gnosis, it will automatically appear in
your Database. There are some notable exceptions to this, which is what this
guide is all about. Additionaly, using the Ether Analyze on a Gnosis will
allow you to access the Analyze data for a specific Gnosis in the database.

Q. I killed a Gnosis and it didn't appear in the Database! What's up?
A. As mentioned above, certain Gnosis do not appear in the Database. Most
obvious examples are bosses, but this list can also include other unique
Gnosis (which I guess could technically be defined as bosses, although they
are, in most cases, optional). Lastly, note that ONLY Gnosis enemies will
appear in the Database. Biological and Mechanical type enemies will not appear
here no matter what you do. If an enemy doesn't appear in the Database, before
anything else, make sure it's actually a Gnosis you're dealing with. I'll leave
it as an exercise for the reader to figure out how to distinguish between the
three types of enemies.

Q. So is it possible to be screwed out of having a complete Database?
A. Well, that's the question, isn't it? In terms of a specific Gnosis not
appearing in the Database at all because you failed to encounter it, I would
have to reply in the negative. I think, realistically, every player will have
to combat and defeat every type of Gnosis that can be added to the Database
(though I'm not commiting myself 100% to that assessment; you know what they
say about idiot-proof systems). However, it is VERY possible to miss the chance
to Analyze certain Gnosis. This will be noted in the Gnosis List found below.

Q. OK, so how many Gnosis should I have in my Database to be all done?
A. I believe the common consensus is 26. This is the number I had just before
beating the last boss (I have no way of checking if this number is changed
after that fight). This is also the number I hear most people quoting on the
message board.

Q. 26, eh? So what are they and where can they be found?
A. Well, that's partly what this quide is about. So quit asking me so many
damn questions, and let me get on with it...

                       +-----===================-----+
                             2 - GNOSIS DATABASE
                        +----===================----+

======================================
2.1 - List of Gnosis Found in Database
======================================
As mentioned, the database is accessed by going to the menu, and then selecting
U.M.N.-->database-->Gnosis (after acquiring the database, of course). In the
Database you can look up a specific Gnosis (assuming the Gnosis is a candidate
for the Database and you have successfully defeated it at least once), rotate
it (whee!), zoom in/out, and look up the Analysis info for that Gnosis by
pressing O (again assuming that you've used Analyze on it at least once).

This section will recreate the Database I had at the end of the game, which I
am fairly sure is about as complete as it gets.

still convinced you'd have to try pretty hard to miss encountering this enemy

NOTE: As noted above, the Sky Fish appears with the final boss of the Woglinde,
Minotaur. IIRC, this is *the only time in the game* you will encounter *this*
variety of Sky Fish (I think you fight some similar-looking enemies in the
Encephalon which, incidentally, do not appear in the Database). Come to think
of it, it might be possible to avoid killing them altogether if you concentrate
your attacks on the main boss, so make sure you kill (and Analyze) at least one
(of two) first. There's a small possibility that even if you do not off one, it
will still appear in the Database just by killing the main boss, but better
safe than sorry, eh?

encountered* is along with Gargoyle. They hold a *special* place in my heart
for being the one thing keeping me from having a perfect Database. Oh, well,
that's what second play-throughs are for, I guess.

2.2 - List of Gnosis NOT Found in Database

I hope to develop this section further in the future. Basically, no boss
Gnosis will apear in the DB (for the moment let's define 'boss' as a unique,
unusually strong Gnosis that you must defeat in order to advance the story).
There are some other cases as well.

One clue as to whether or not an enemy will appear in your DB is actually given
by the your characters themselves.  When encountering bosses and other unique
monsters they will usually say something different than when encountering
normal enemies. For example, chaos will say "This is no ordinary force.
Everyone, be careful!" I am fairly sure this occurs only for the types of
battles described above. So keep an ear open.

3.1 - Some Last Thoughts
========================
First, I'd like to thank you, the reader, for reading my guide. Hopefully it
was helpful to you. I realize that there are still some questions that remain
unanswered. For example, why is it that enemies such as Sky Fish, Oudogogue,
and Wyrm seem to defy the pattern of one-time encounters not showing up in the
Database? One possible answer to this (observed very astutely by juggleknot of
the Xenosaga message board) is that those enemies may be common encounters in
one of the future episodes in this series. Personally, I like this explanation
very much, as it may also explain why the numbers given in the database entries
have three digits when you encounter only 26 candidates. Two digits would have
been more than enough for that number (99 max, as opposed to 999).

UPDATE: Well, it seems that Episode II didn't really clarify any of the above.
Too bad...

At any rate, this concludes the Gnosis Database Guide.

3.2 - Acknowledgements

Still here? Then you might as well read about these people that helped me with
the guide (in alphabetical order):

juggleknot - for his interesting observation regarding Gnosis encounters in
            future episodes (see above).

Shin Scias - for asking some of the questions that got this guide rolling, and
            also for having a cool BoF IV-inspired name.

Wasari - for his many contributions to this guide.

Well, that covers it for now. If I have left anyone out, I assure you it was
not intentional. Please bring it to my attention immediately. Thank you.
