You're probably reading this because you're looking to obtain a certain
ending. Or maybe you DONT want to obtain an ending and you just want to read
the description rather than play through the game. Whichever fits you, you've
come to the right place if you have questions about the endings.
This FAQ Includes:
- How to obtain each of the endings
- Descriptions for all of the endings
- Ending Scripts
Yes I know all of this can be found in most of the walkthroughs but after
spending about 20 min looking for some info on an ending, I gave up and
decided to put all the ending information into one neat and tidy FAQ. I
suggest you play through the game once before reading this FAQ, because your
chances of having something spoiled are high.

2.The Endings

Depending on which version of Silent Hill 2 you have, you will either have 5
or 6 endings. In the original version of SH2, there are 5 different endings.
Greatest Hits and the XBox version have 6. The following is information on
all 6 of the endings. From this point on, expect massive ***SPOILERS***

- Heal immediately after being hurt

Quick Description
-------------------------------------
When the final boss is killed, James talks one last time with Mary
in her bed. After they're done talking, Mary gives James a letter
and then passes on. A scene of Laura and James walking up the path
through the cemetary is shown while the letter* is read aloud by
Mary. It is believed that this represents James fulfilling Marys
wish and adopting Laura.
*the entire letter can be found just after Endings section.

different than Mary. How can you throw me away?!

(Maria transforms into a demon and James fights and kills her)

(Fade in to Marys bedroom)
JAMES: Mary?
MARY: (cough cough cough) James...
JAMES: Forgive me?
MARY: I told you that I wanted to die James. I wanted the pain
to end.
JAMES: Thats why I did it honey. I just couldnt watch you suffer.
No...thats not true. You also said, you didnt want to die.
The truth is, I hated you. I wanted you out of the way. I
wanted my life back.
MARY: James...If that were true, then why do you look so sad?
JAMES: Mary?!
MARY: James...please. Please do something for me. Go on with your
life.
(Mary passes away and James gets her letter. A scene of James
and Laura walking through the cemetary is shown while Mary
narrorates the letter)

When the final boss is killed, James returns to Rosewater Park with
Maria. He ultimately decides to leave with her. Maria coughs a
few times. Is James doomed to repeat what happened with Mary?

You must have hated me. Thats why you got rid of me.
JAMES: Its true. I may have had some of those feelings. (pause)
It was a long three years. I was...tired...
MARY: Thats why you needed this Maria person? James...do
you really think I could ever FORGIVE YOU FOR WHAT
YOU DID?!?
(Mary transforms into a demon and James fights and kills her)
MARY: James...James...James...
(Screen fades in to James and Maria)
MARIA: You killed Mary again?
JAMES: That wasnt Mary. Marys gone. That was just something
I...Maria?...Maria?
MARIA: What James?
JAMES: I want you. I want you with me.
MARIA: Are you sure?
JAMES: Cmon, lets get out of here.
MARIA: What about Mary?

carries her out of the room. The screen fades to black and you hear
a car door shut. A car can be heard driving erratically and then it
stops and James says: "Now we can be together". The screen fades
back in and it is a view from underwater. The letter* Mary gave you

going extremly fast and screeching. It all stops)

Bonus Endings
________________________________________________________________
The following endings are bonus endings(including one that is
only found in the Greatest Hits version). These endings require
special saving techniques, so please read carefully or you
might not get them.
In order for most of these endings to work, you must use what is
known as a "Replay Game". These replay games save whatever
new ending you get during a replay of the game, to the last
played SH2 file. This means that you can have credit for getting
more than one ending on a save file.
For example, the Dog ending requires that you have received all
three normal endings on one save or completed the Rebirth ending
on one save. After obtaining these endings on one save, you can
then select "Replay Game" and the Dog ending should be unlocked.
The "Replay Game" option can be found at the Main Menu after
completing the game once.

Requirements for "Rebirth" ending:
Collect the following items during a "Replay Game"
after beating the game once with any ending:
- White Chism: Located on kitchen counter in room
with Coin Puzzle in the Blue Creek
apartments
- Book Of Lost Located in a newspaper dispenser
Memories: at the Texxon Gas Station after
meeting with Maria
- Obsidian Located inside a broken display
Goblet: case inside of the Silent Hill
Historical Society
- Book of Located in the Reading Room after
Crimson watching the tape
Ceremony:
If you have all of these after killing the final boss, you
should achieve the Rebirth ending.

Quick Description
-------------------------------------
When the final boss is killed, James returns to the rowboat and
rows to an island in the middle of Toluca Lake. The island is seen
to have a small church/alter on it. He rows up to a dock on the
island as the screen fades to black. According to many theories, he
was attempting to use the dark ritual to resurrect Mary.

JAMES: Mary...you looked so...peaceful. Forgive me for waking you
but without you, I just cant go on. I cant live without
you Mary. This town...Silent Hill. The old gods havent

Pick up the Observation Room Key inside of the Dog
House in the lot DIRECTLY across from the exit of
Rosewater Park after meeting Maria.
Continue through the game until you watch the tape.
After you watch the tape, use the key to open the
Observation Room next to Room 312 for this ending.

As James opens the door to the Observation Room, he spies a Dog
sitting in a chair infront of a control panel. So it was the dog
all along! I knew it! Or did I?

Requirements for "UFO" ending
***This ending is only available in the Greatest Hits***
***version and the Xbox version***
After you have completed the game and the extra Maria
scenario, start a new game and look for a "Blue Gem"
in the reststop bathroom. Use the Blue Gem in the
following places throughout the game:
- The Brookhaven Garden after fighting the hanging men
- Infront of the row boat on the dock after exiting
the meat locker
- In Room 312 before you watch the tape
If you did it right, you'll recieve a new ending. This
along with the "Dog" ending are both joke endings.

Quick Description
-------------------------------------
When James uses the Blue Gem the final time, a short black and
white movie is played. All I'll say is that the movie involves
James, Harry and Aliens.

in the ceiling and all I can think
about is how unfair it all is...

4.The Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many endings are there?
A: If you are playing the original version, 5. If you are playing the Xbox
version or the Greatest Hits version, 6.
Q: Is there a good or bad ending?
A: I do not believe there is a best ending. All endings give a different
spin on the story. I reccomend playing through the game once and seeing
what ending you get without trying for one ending in particular.
Q: Is there an ending I should go for?
A: If you're reading this guide to decide on which ending you want, you're
really taking a lot of mystery out of the game. But I guess since you've
read this far, it doesnt really matter anymore, does it? My personal
favorite is "In Water", but its all a matter of opinion or how you feel
the story should end.
Q: Is it possible to load up a save near the end and get a different ending
if I do things differently?
A: Indeed it is possible. Although very difficult. You would have to be
very close to getting another ending for it to work. Please note though,
that you will be unable to save both endings on the file in order to get
credit for both endings. You will have to beat the game 3 seperate times
on the same time if you want the dog ending.
Q: I beat the game and The UFO Gem/Dog key/Rebirth items were not there.
What happened?
A: In order for these items to appear, all ending requirements must be done
on the same save file. In order to do this, you must first load the file
that you completed the proper ending with. Then you must select "Replay
Game" at the main menu. When this is done, the credit for the ending you
complete on Replay game will remain on the same file.
