||||||||||||||||||||||||| SECTION #1 - INTRODUCTION ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Welcome to this quick and short guide to the hidden vehicles in The Getaway.
I've had the game for a short while now and I spent a lot of the days before
and after Christmas replaying missions, finding cars, and somehow also
finding a large list of misc. bugs (which I've sent for a hopeful inclusion
in the appropriate section in The Getaway FAQ/Walkthrough written by Collie
and now at his request, Belfast IsJericho's guide as well).

Currently I've listed all of the locations of the cars and how best to find
them without a map. However I'm still looking for more locations for the Works
Transit car. As well as that, if anyone has scanned the entire map you get
with the Getaway (or would like to do so), so it can be put online to help
those without the map find these cars, please e-mail me as well. I have the
ability to host it fine, I just don't have a scanner to do so myself.

UPDATE - Thanks to <Darran Carter> I've been able to provide a scan of the map
packaged in with the game for those who may not have the map, as well as
providing marked locations even for those who possibly do but are wanting a
visual guide. Check the top of the guide or the start of section #3 for info
on the downloadable map.

Oh, and given recent events. Does anyone know if there are any BT vans parked
or driving anywhere in Free Roaming? I'm sure I would have seen one by now,
but it's always good to double check these things.

On with the guide,
- Rob

||||||||||||||||||| SECTION #2 - FREE ROAMING INTRODUCTION |||||||||||||||||||

First things first, you need to know what the "Free Roaming" option is all
about and how to earn it.

Essentially all the free roaming mode is about is to give you to explore the
map of London in The Getaway at your leisure. You can explore every nook and
cranny, cause chaos, fight police and gangs at choice, steal or sorts of cars
and even find a few secret ones. And it's for this reason this guide exists.
More on the hidden cars later though.

As to how you get it. Well that is "fairly simple" in that it requires you to
finish all 24 main missions in the game. After the first 12 the extra feature
option opens with both the "Free Roaming" and "Credits" listings, however
only the credits option will be selectable until you finish the final 12
missions. Once these are complete you can select the mode.

Alternatively you can use a code to unlock the Free Roaming mode. At the title
screen, before you bring up the main menu, press the following:

Triangle
Triangle
Triangle
Left
Square
Triangle
Triangle
Triangle
Left
Circle

If done correctly the screen will flash with a tinted yellow and you'll hear a
womans scream.

In the free roaming mode you will find that both gangs and police are far
less bothersome than in the main game, allowing you to get away easily,
causing less trouble, and most of the time generally just sitting around like
any other road user. However keep in mind you can still cause havoc and get
killed or arrested as per the normal game if you do manage to mess around with
them too much. And being run over or catching on fire is still a factor too of
course.

Sadly all of the locations you could go inside (such as warehouses,
apartments, garages, the Snowhill Police Station etc.) are all locked up,
meaning you can't go on any indoor killing sprees or relearning areas (which
is a shame as even after finishing the game the first time, some locations
still weren't the easiest to map out in my mind).

Because for some reason a few people have e-mailied me for the starting
details map wise for the Free Roaming mode, I'm adding that detail here.
However this was already listed in the guide (under the Lotus 7 details) but
in any case the grid point at which you start on the map packaged with the
game is H-7, on Great Marlborough Street.

The bonus cars are probably the best thing to spend time messing around in
this mode however of course you probably aren't going to find all of them, so
this is why I'm here to make a list and hopefully help out on the ones your
missing. The cars are just like any others though and are prone to being
destroyed. They all re-spawn in the same spots like most parked cars in the
game do too. As well as this, a lot of them can actually be found somewhere
within the normal game. Either always parked in the same or different place,
or after certain missions. I'll try to make a note of these as well with each
car, however if I've managed to over look this from in the game please e-mail
me with the details.

||||||||||||||||||||||| SECTION #3 - THE CAR LOCATIONS |||||||||||||||||||||||

Including the car you start the mode with there are currently 12 known
"bonus" vehicles sitting around the areas within London. For this guide I've
referred to the handy packaged map which should have come with your
instruction manual. If anymore bonus cars are found, please e-mail me and I
will add them to the listing. It's really 10, as the additional 2 are
negligible as bonus cars, but I've included them as they're rare parked cars
you can find.

If you've rented the game however and don't have a map included, fear not, I
will be trying my best to hopefully still make these cars find-able through a
description. Obviously not the easiest thing given the size of the map, but
hopefully as long as you at least know something about the famous landmarks
of London then you shouldn't be too bad off.

At this time I'm also looking for anyone who has or can possibly scan the
map packaged with the game to post online so it can be linked to in this
document for those without the maps. If you can do so and would like to help
others without the map, please drop me a line by e-mail. The address is at
the top of the guide.

UPDATE - Thanks to <Darran Carter> I've been able to provide a scan of the map
packaged in with the game. The map is online at my personal site and will stay
at this location at least until April 2004, if not longer (depending on if the
domain is renewed, which it most likely will be) :)

The map will benefit those who have no access to the map (perhaps through such
as a rental copy for example or now the US version as I've been told) or for
those who are wanting a visual guide to locating the cars (I've marked them
on the map you can get here).

Sony has finally also gotten around to adding a map to their website. You'll
however have to sign up for their club thing to gain access to it, as it's
located in the "Underground" section of the site.

Let's get started.

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

                                3.1  - Lotus 7
                                ==============

Location On Map:
----------------
H-7 (Great Marlborough Street)
T-11 (St Thomas Street)

For the H-7 location it is where you start the free roaming mode in the car,
so it's not too hard to find. ;)

For T-11, the Lotus is parked in the corner of a carpark in St Thomas Street.
Coming into the street from either Bermondsey Street or from the few side
streets winding off Tower Bridge Road, the carpark is located to the left
side behind a yellow brick wall. Once you drive inside through the open gate
check to your immediate left to find the Lotus 7 parked and ready for you to
drive.

All credit to <Tony Newlands> on supplying the details for the Lotus 7
located in reference grid T-11.

Descriptive Location:
---------------------
H-7 - See above.

T-11 - This is a bit of a toughie because of location, so I thought it might
be easy to approach this from two different major landmarks in the area. The
first being the roundabout which circles the IMAX theater near the Millennium
Wheel and the second being the Tower Bridge itself. The Tower Bridge one is
the harder of the two because it's more out of the way map wise, but if you
find yourself near it and want to hop a hidden car, then you'll be able to do
it following this guide.

IMAX Route - Firstly I can only hope you know what the IMAX theater looks
like. If you don't, head for the riverside near the large Ferris wheel (the
Millennium Wheel) on the bank of the Thames. The road which runs near it leads
from a bridge at one end to a roundabout around a building at the other. The
building at the end is the theater. Now to get to the car.

Firstly you need to find the turn off of the 4 leading off the roundabout
which leads across the Thames. Once you have, point back towards the IMAX
theater and follow the road left with the flow of traffic and take the first
left turn off into a narrow two lane street. This is Stamford Street. You'll
know your on the right street if you see a red crane off to the left as you
drive down it.

Follow the street until you come to an intersection. There was already a turn
off to the left which you can ignore. You need to head more-or-less straight
ahead and along the street in which you will go under the bridge you can see
sitting at this intersection. This is Southwark Street. Follow this road along
past 4 turn off's on the left hand side. Just after the 4th one, you'll come
to a three way intersection. Keep following the road your on back towards the
direction of the Thames but make the first right turn off the street. You'll
be heading the wrong way into traffic but we don't care about that. :)

Down the far end of the street on the right is the car park. You'll need to
get along far enough to clear all the tall buildings on the right, but the
large space where the carpark is should be easy to see - black fence followed
by a large yellow brick wall (as will the mini-billboard with an advertisement
for the "Charlie's Angels" movie on it). Once inside check to your immediate
left to find the Lotus 7 parked and ready for you to drive.

Tower Bridge Route - The Tower Bridge is the eastern most bridge you can reach
in The Getaway's version of London. It's distinctive because it is an old
fashioned bridge and very narrow (unlike the rest which are all modern flat
bridges and have plenty of space). Firstly we need to make sure you're heading
in the right direction by making sure your on the side of the Tower Bridge
that has shops and houses on both sides of the street right beside it. When
you're there then you know your on the south side of the bridge.

Drive south away from the bridge until you reach the first intersection. From
here make a right (into the oncoming traffic) and follow the road until you
see your first turn off to the left. Follow it by turning left and follow the
road and go through the tunnel. Continue following the road and when you get
to the next intersection continue going straight. Shortly after the
intersection the carpark will appear. It is located to the left side behind a
yellow brick wall. Once you drive inside through the open gate check to your
immediate left to find the Lotus 7 parked and ready for you to drive.

Additional Info:
----------------
I've been seeing a lot of people call this the Mark II Roadster because of the
MKII-Z listed on the back. I would assume this is because it's the close to
the 2nd type of the Lotus-7 released, although redesigned as one of the
replicas you can still buy today if I'm not mistaken. I honestly don't know
much about the Seven, so if you have better info on this than I do, I'd be
glad to add it.

Oh, and where you start free roaming mode at... it's right by Sony Computer
Entertainment Europe's London offices. If you were wondering why you start
where you start :)

Interesting glitch to note about the location of the second Lotus 7 parked in
the Borough comes from <Barticle>. Seems you need a car to be able to get into
the carpark. Here are the words from the man himself:

"you cannot enter or leave the car-park on foot, only in a vehicle!
there's an invisible barrier across the gateway which blocks
pedestrians, you can even lean/stealth against it. weird!"

I've tested it and it seems to be both ways. You can't enter the car park
without a car nor can you exit without using the car you entered or the Lotus
7. In short if you destroy your cars in the car park your screwed because you
can't get out. This invisible wall glitch seems to stem from the fact there
is supposed to be gate there in the normal missions which is removed for
free roaming. They've given the ability for cars to get through but for Mark
on foot it still registers there is a gate in place.

                          3.2  - Nissan Skyline GTR-33
                          ============================

Location On Map:
----------------
A-9 (Bayswater Road)
U-12 (Bermondsey Street)

For the Skyline at A-9, the best thing is to drive to the end of Bayswater
Road at A-8 and then head south to A-9. As your facing west (and off the map)
you'll see a driveway in the large wall leading to the left. Follow it and
you'll be lead to a mansion. The (white and slightly dirty) Skyline GTR-33
will be sitting here.

For U-12, you need to drive up Bermondsey Street from Long Lane and keep an
eye out on your right side. You'll notice some cardboard boxes sitting
outside of a small garage. Hop out of whatever your driving and walk around
the boxes into the garage where you can hop into the Skyline. Just drive
through the boxes on your way out.

Again, all credit to <Tony Newlands> on supplying the details for the Skyline
located in reference grid U-12.

Descriptive Location:
---------------------
A-9 - From where you start head one block straight ahead and make
a left up the narrow street. From here make another left (this is onto Oxford
Street which is the main shopping strip in these parts ;) ).

From here you just need to keep going straight following this road until you
reach it's end. At some point during this trip you should see the Marble Arch
on your left before coming along side a lot of park land (this being Hyde
Park).

When you reach as far as you can go with the barricades blocking your route,
follow the road to the left and then look right. You should see a gap in the
large wall around the outside. This is the driveway leading to a mansion where
the car is located, sitting in the yard.

U-12 - This is a bit of a toughie because of location, so I thought it might
be easy to approach this from two different major landmarks in the area. The

Additional Info:
----------------
These are the only other Skylines apart from the black ones the Chinese Triads
are driving around in the game I would believe (and even then, they're fairly
rare as the Triad's are usually driving around in Honda Civic's). I'm
surprised Team Soho didn't go with the newer and final model Skyline, the
R34's, while the ones that appear are the older R33 type (which for some
reason I like the look of better anyway - probably that the rear lights
don't look bad when they're all even rather than two large and two small).

As a bonus car its good too, and so I'm glad Team Soho decided to go backwards
rather than forwards like they did by hiding the prototype Saab in the game.
That by adding the new look "GT-R" Nissan is producing (due to be released in
2004 I believe). Mostly because it looks ghastly.

<Peril> adds this tidbit of info on the Skyline in the free roaming mode.

"I have noticed one thing which is incorrect. The white Nissan
Skyline is actually a TommyKaira R modified Skyline. The original
R was white, and if you look closely at it, you will notice that
it has a slightly different bodykit to the Triads' Skylines. The
Triads' Skylines are just stock Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R's, but the
parked white one is a TommyKaira R."

Thanks for that Peril.

<Cooper Naitove> writes to add something else... which while I'm not sure of
the exactness of, brings up an very interesting point of use of some of these
cars.

"Hey the reason some cars get a boost while holding R1 and gas is
because of the fact they they have a turbo. The Skylines and Sabs
for example are both turbocharged. So while holding the R1 you
are spooling up the turbos so when you let go the boost kicks in.

This is an effective trick when you are being chased and have to
get another car...makes for a good get away."

Oh, and by the way... the second Skyline in Bermondsey Street can be found
during the missions too.

                              3.3 - TVR Cerbera
                              =================

Location On Map:
----------------
A-9 (Bayswater Road)

For the Cerbera at A-9, the best thing is to drive to the end of Bayswater
Road at A-8 and then head south to A-9. As your facing west (and off the map)
you'll see a driveway in the large wall leading to the left. Follow it and
you'll be lead to a mansion. The Cerbera will be sitting here.

Descriptive Location:
---------------------
From where you start head one block straight ahead and make a left up the
narrow street. From here make another left (this is onto Oxford Street which
is the main shopping strip in these parts ;) ).

This is the driveway leading to a mansion where
the car is located. The Cerbera is sitting outside the mansion, across from
the Skyline.

Additional Info:
----------------
The Cerbera is a sleek fast sports car obviously, and you'll find it reaches
a mean top speed in a generally short amount of time. It takes a moderate
amount of a beating too, so you should hopefully find that it won't crap out
on you too soon. The TVR has been the "model car" for The Getaway, it appears
in a lot of the promotional shots when it comes to car scenes rendered in CG.
It also appears more often in places than any other car.

The TVR can actually be found during the actual game as well in many places.
These include:

Location #1 - Mission #8 -

This comes from <hkdiner> who posted this tidbit on the GameFAQ's message
board:

"there's a secret one hidden in the garage/ petrol station at
the start of level 8 if you come out of the forecourt and
drive stright down the road ahead of you. it's on the right
     hand side."

While the description might not be exact, it's close enough. If you drive
straight out of lockup's yard and head down the road straight infront
you'll eventually come to an intersection. Ignore it and continue on
another hundred meters or so and there will be a gas station on the right
side of the road.

If you check behind the main shop part of the station you'll find the
Cerbera parked beside it.

Location #2 - Mission #12 -

<Moebius> writes to add an additional location:

"In your guide you state the car can be found during the game
in mission 20. However it can be found in mission 12 "Sol
     Vista".

Go back into Charlie Jolson's mansion (through the basement)
untill you come to the courtyard (first set of stairs you
ascend) Do not enter the courtyard but immediately turn right
when you're at the top of the stairs. Follow the wall and you
will find a door to Charlie's garage. The TVR is there for
     your taking :)"

Thanks for that Moebius. The car actually is a good getaway car for this
mission. Make sure you turn left when you exit the garage. The indicators say
right (flashing for a hard right turn), but it's actually quicker to go with
the flow of the traffic going left, and then make another left onto the main
roadway nearby.

Location #3 - Mission #14

<Ian> writes to add yet another additional location for the TVR:

"Hi there - just read your Getaway vehicles guide and have
some info about an in-game TVR which wasn't included.
Can't remember the exact number of the mission, but when
Carter goes to the dock yard to gun down the Yardies you'll
find it just before you enter the 'complex'."

The mission he's talking about is Mission 14 (Show Some Remorse). Let's
continue to listen to Ian as he explains more on the location.

"If you follow your indicator and turn left to go into the
gates you'll see a few vans (Karen Millen) immediately on
your left, in like a thin alley way. There's about two and
then next to them is the TVR (slightly shielded from view).
If I remember rightly, there might even be a randomnly
     placed marked police Vectra!

"Anyway, take the TVR into the big open space of the
'complex' for some bad skids! So far I've managed to do a
540 but it might be possible to do more. Turn sharply, then
when you start to slide put the handbrake on. Just when you
feel like you might stop (at about 360), press the opposite
     direction with handbrake again.

"Muck about in it before you battle the Yardies because as
you leave the dock in the unmarked Vectra the TVR is gone.
One last tip - if you start gunning the Yardies at the
entrance and THEN go to the TVR I think it and the police
     car are gone."

Sure enough, during Mission 14 the TVR is there (I haven't yet seen the
Vectra but who knows). As soon as you enter the gates to the compound there
are trucks to your left (sometimes with advertising, sometimes with none -
always random). The TVR Cerbera is right where Ian mentioned, after the 2nd
truck (it's parked between the 2nd and 3rd).

Indeed also if you hop in the car then get out and walk off somewhere (such
as fighting some of the Yardies) then try to return you'll more than likely
find the car is gone (and it won't even respawn where you found it
originally). It will however respawn should you die once you're facing the
Yardies. When you restart outside, turn around and run back to where you can
find the car and you'll find it's parked right there as normal.

You can hop in it and give it a spin during Mission 14 as previously stated,
but if you double check at the start of Mission 15 (Disturbance in Soho) by
backing back through the gates you're shot out of at the start of the mission
you'll find the TVR still there even if you did drive around in it like a
loon and even destroy it during Mission 14. So it's just as good to go
driving in if you don't want the unmarked Vectra for the mission.

Location #4 - Mission #21

At the start of Mission #21 with Carter when you start in the garage, instead
of making your way out the way you came, follow the hallway in the opposite
direction down a dark hallway. It'll lead to a final garage where the door
will roll up... and sitting at the front will be the TVR.

                               3.4 - Lotus M250
                               ================

Location On Map:
----------------
A-9 (Bayswater Road)

For the M250 at A-9, the best thing is to drive to the end of Bayswater
Road at A-8 and then head south to A-9. As your facing west (and off the map)
you'll see a driveway in the large wall leading to the left. Follow it and
you'll be lead to a mansion. The Lotus M250 is inside the garage near to
where the Skyline and TVR Cerbera are parked.

Descriptive Location:
---------------------
From where you start head one block straight ahead and make a left up the
narrow street. From here make another left (this is onto Oxford Street which
is the main shopping strip in these parts ;) ).

From here you just need to keep going straight following this road until you

When you reach as far as you can go with the barricades blocking your route,
follow the road to the left and then look right. You should see a gap in the
large wall around the outside. This is the driveway leading to a mansion where
the car is located. The M250 is inside the garage near to where the Skyline
and TVR Cerbera are parked.

Additional Info:
----------------
The Lotus M250 is another sleek fast sports car, and you'll find it reaches
a high top speed in very quick amount of time. The downfall comes in the fact
that the car can't take much punishment (and in fact at top speed, a heavy
frontal impact can destroy the car in one go)

The Lotus M250, like the TVR, can actually be found during the actual game as
well - again after mission 20 when you start in the garage, instead of making
your way out, follow the hallway in the opposite direction down a dark
hallway. It'll lead to a final garage where the door will roll up... sitting
at the back of the garage, behind the TVR, will be the Lotus M250.

Originally in this guide the M250 was marked as the Lotus Elise. While the
cars have some similarity after searching the web I did notice what was being
commented on in the GameFAQ's message board, that it was the M250, also known
as Project M250.

For your own comparisons here are two pages with the Lotus Elise and M250 with
details and nice photographs:

Elise - http://newmedia2.ppp.co.uk/portfieldcars/marques/elise.htm
M250  - http://newmedia2.ppp.co.uk/portfieldcars/marques/m250.htm

Thanks to <L B> for posting originally noting that the Elise was in fact the
M250 instead.

                                3.5 - Go-Kart
                                =============

Location On Map:
----------------
A-9 (Bayswater Road)

For the Go-Kart at A-9, the best thing is to drive to the end of Bayswater
Road at A-8 and then head south to A-9. As your facing west (and off the map)
you'll see a driveway in the large wall leading to the left. Follow it and
you'll be lead to a mansion. The Go-Kart is inside the garage near to where
the Skyline and TVR Cerbera are parked. Once inside the garage, check around
the corner from the Lotus M250.

Descriptive Location:
---------------------
From where you start head one block straight ahead and make a left up the
narrow street. From here make another left (this is onto Oxford Street which
is the main shopping strip in these parts ;) ).

From here you just need to keep going straight following this road until you

Additional Info:
----------------
The Go-Kart is one of those weird bonus vehicles you get in these games which
is just there for the hell of it. It slides easily and spins too (much like
you would expect a real one would). I even find it funny how Mark puts his
hand into the air when he reverses (a kinda odd thing caused by the fact the
animation is set for when he's in a car and rests his arm on the passenger
seat). Another odd thing you can note, is if you manage to smash up the front
enough Mark's feet actually protrude out the front of the cart a bit. heh

                         3.6 - Peugeot 306 Modified
                         ==========================

Location On Map:
----------------
J-14 (Horseferry Road)

If you look on the left hand side coming from the Thames (and across the
Lambeth Bridge) around J-14, you'll see a long blue wall. At the western end
you'll see an alley with some cardboard boxes sitting in it. Follow the alley
down a winding roadway into a empty warehouse. You'll see a broken down car in
one corner... if you look left of it against the wall, you'll find the
modified "boy racer" 306.

Descriptive Location:
---------------------
To start with, I'm going to assume you know what Big Ben is and where the it
and the House of Parliament building is down on near the side of the River
Thames. From the bridge crossing the Thames (which is the Westminster Bridge)
stop beside the Big Ben. From starting here, head forward and take the first
left. Follow this road all the way until you reach a roundabout with grass in
the middle. The left direction leads back over the Thames, so head to the
right and up Horseferry Road. As you drive along look to you right until you
see a blue wall. Follow it to it's far end until you see an alley with some
cardboard boxes sitting in it. Follow the alley down a winding roadway into a
empty warehouse. You'll see a broken down car in one corner... if you look
left of it against the wall, you'll find the modified "boy racer" 306.

Additional Info:
----------------
This seems to be one of the few instances in the game where the car isn't
licensed (lack of badges seem to give that fact away). One can only assume
that the car is something one of the staff has or wants :) The car has
tinted windows, low skirting, neon lights underneath, and a large speaker
system in the back.

<Tom Llewellyn> writes to add:

"...the reason the modified 306 hasn't got any badges is because
it is a boyracers car and they are debadged to look better."

It's entirely possible as a reason too. :) Thanks Tom.

The modded 306 isn't restricted to the free roaming mode, it can still be
found in the same location in the main game.

An additional note, is that both the US version and PAL Version 2 editions of
the game have another car hidden down in the same location as this Peugeot
306. Check section 3.13 of this guide for more information on the car.

                               3.7 - Golf Cart
                               ===============

Location On Map:
----------------
C-9/C-10 (Hyde Park)

There are two entrances best marked for the entrance which will find you the
cart. This is because the park itself is so huge and there are numerous ways
to enter all the way around the outside.

The first is about around B-8/C-8, just at the end of the footpath running
along beside Hyde Park. The grey path first crosses a brown dirt track and
continues on into the middle of the park. At the first intersection the road
splits off in 4 directions, and to the left of you (and the end of the brown
fence that was running along side you) is a large open area covered with
grass. If you look towards the south of it, behind some trees to the right of
where you  entered, you'll find the golf cart hidden.

The second way starts around the join line of A-9 and B-9, a thin grey walkway
starts within a large gate slightly north of the Reptilian Gallery from one of
Mark's early missions. If you follow this grey path all the way into the park
you'll eventually come to a 4 way intersection. Straight ahead of you though
is a large open area covered with grass. If you look towards the southern side
of it, behind some trees to the right of where you entered, you'll find the
golf cart hidden.

In both cases the hint of white in all of the green should stick out like a
sore thumb.

Descriptive Location:
---------------------
The best way to find the cart if you don't have the map is to head to where
you can get the Skyline, TVR, Go-Kart, and M250, but then head south a little
and follow the road as it slowly curves. On the left hand side you see a thin
grey walkway which starts within a large gate. If you see the banners for the
Reptilian Gallery from one of Mark's early missions then you know you've gone
too far. It's on that side slightly before it when heading along this road.

If you follow this thin grey path all the way into the park you'll eventually
come to a 4 way intersection. Straight ahead of you though is a large open
area covered with grass. If you look towards the southern end of it, behind
some trees to the right of where you entered, you'll find the golf cart
hidden.

Additional Info:
----------------
For something so small you'd expect it to be underpowered, but the golf cart
actually can get to some fairly high speeds on the open roads. Much like the
Go-Kart though it's easy to slide and spin because it's light and the small
wheels don't provide much grip.

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

3.8 - Royal Parks Daihatsu HiJet
                       ================================

Location On Map:
----------------
C-9/C-10 (Hyde Park)

The best way to find it is to go to the same intersection as described for the
cart, but instead of heading south into the grassy area, follow the single
south path, and the Park's HiJet will be parked in the carpark to the right
side. Right beside the blue shack as you enter.

Descriptive Location:
---------------------
The best way to find the HiJet if you don't have the map is to head to where
you can get the Skyline, TVR, Go-Kart, and M250, but then head south a little
and follow the road as it slowly curves.

When you get there take the path to the right
and the Park's HiJet will be parked in the carpark to the right side as you
drive along. Right beside the blue shack as you enter.

Additional Info:
----------------
I was questioning if I should add this to the bonus cars list, because the
HiJet isn't that uncommon. However there is only a couple of these Royal Parks
HiJet Pickups around, both in Hyde Park. So it becomes a sort of bonus car.
The Royal Parks HiJet is also able to be driven in the normal game.

D. Jones would like me to make sure it is noted that there are more of these
Royal Parks pickups in Hyde Park. Some are near sheds, some are hidden behind
things. Feel free to take a run through the park and find more than the one I
have noted.

                               3.9 - Lotus Esprit
                               ==================

Location On Map:
----------------
D-5 (Intersection of Baker Street and Marylebone Road)

At the end of Baker Street, look north to the opposite side of Marylebone
Road. You see an alleyway slightly to the right of the red brick building at
the end. Down the alley sits the Lotus Esprit.

Descriptive Location:
---------------------
The best way to find this one is to start from the Free Roaming start point
again I guess. Turn 180 from the direction your facing and go to the end of
the road and make a right turn. Head up a single block to Oxford Street.
It's easy to distinguish where you are because this intersection has a lot
of stonework and yellow crossing areas. Make a left down Oxford. Now you need
to count 4 blocks on the right side. When you reach the forth, turn right and
follow it right to the end (you'll be heading the wrong way into traffic).
Once you reach the end of the Street, look north to the opposite side of the
road running left and right across (this is Marylebone Road). You should see
an alleyway slightly to the right of the red brick building. At the end of
the alley sits the Lotus Esprit.

Additional Info:
----------------
The original Esprit has that distinctive Italian "Giugiaro Design" look of the
70's and 80's, although I'm not surprised if anyone mistook the car for the
old MR2's driving around on a quick glance. The version used in the game is
the late fits the Turbo enhanced model reworked design however (I don't think
it's the new V8 version but the detailing is negligible so it possibly could
be). Fairly speedy and strong. The Esprit will also be located here during the
normal game.

I've had a few people now and then e-mailing me about hidden cars in the demo
which while there is one, this Lotus Esprit, the fact you can't free roam in
the demo because of a time limit kinda always stopped the point. But a while
back GameFAQ's member <KCMC582> posted instructions on how to accomplish a
semi-free roaming mode in the demo. It can be difficult at first, but it's
do-able.

Firstly, the location of the car. Starting from the intersection before the
road to where you find the car outside the warehouse. If you follow the road
straight, instead of turning left to the warehouse to the next intersection,
make a right... drive, make a left, and follow the road you'll find yourself
looking straight into a yard which joins the road. If you look around the
corner of the blue fence, the car will be sitting there. This is marked at
S-10 on the map (which you can get from http://www.new-blood.com/thegetaway
if you require it).

Now KCMC582's original instructions on how to get this free roaming mode in
the demo were as posted at GameFAQ's as follows:

"ok, im going to post exactly what i did to do this. i cant
guarantee it will work everyttime, but here it goes.

"1. start out the demo as normal, follow the red Jaguar all
the way UNTIL you get to the last street, where the red Jag </pre><pre id="faqspan-2">
is parked at the end. DO NOT go down this street.

"2. park your car on the sidewalk, facing the parked red
jaguar, and line up your front tires on the curb, like you
were using it as a starting line. so basicaly, if you punch
the gas, you will launch straight at the red jag. got it?

"3. wait til the beeping starts, then gets faster, then the
fast music plays. once the fast music starts playing, count
to about 11, and then hit the gas. you will NOT reach the
jag (if you do, start again, count higher) it will tell you
that you lost the car. the demo will end and it will say
      RESTART. restart the demo.

"when counting down, you must make it across the white street
line, the crosswalk. you must be on the street, or it will
restart from normal when you fail. sometimes i cross that
line and hit my brakes a little ways up. do NOT go all the
      way to the jag.

"4. it will start again, but THIS TIME the jag will be very
slow, you will catch up to it very easily. now, spend the
rest of the time trying to stop this jag. i managed to get
it pinned between 2 parking meters. shoot out the tires on
the jag, and i boxed it in with some cars, just to be safe.
then, you can drive around to your hearts content. i paused
the game and it restarted itself, but i was calmly cruisng
      around.

"i dont think you can blow up the jag, cuz i kept shooting
it til i ran out, but as long as it cannot reach the
      destination, you are good.

"also, in your second run, with the "slow" jag, dont die, or
get caught by the police, or anything, because when you
respawn, you will be at the second part of the mission by
the warehouse, and will not be able to free roam."

Now when I was originally told about this I was skeptical of course, but I
decided to hold off because I didn't see much point, but more and more people
have e-mailed me about it to the point where I decided to pull out my old
UK edition of the demo and give it a shot. I did manage to accomplish it after
a couple of tries too. I'll give you a few additional notes to try and help
with the demo from what KCMC582 originally wrote, and then tell you my
experiences.

    - Firstly it doesn't matter how or where you line yourself up as
long as it's you're facing down on the street where the Jag is
parked and you're not already down the street (you need to do
      it from the intersection).
    - Some people might have a bit of trouble counting it right, so
here is something to keep in mind - the fast music repeats the
same beat six times. You need to be in the right location by
the sixth, so use that as a guide. Taking off on the 4th or 5th
is going to be your best bet to making it.
    - Passing the white crosswalk is a good marker, as is getting
just past the pub on the left corner - both of these are good
      success marks.

I originally wasn't expecting anything of this for myself, because of course
I've only got the UK demo so I wasn't going to be surprised of course if it
didn't work.

But not only did it work - something odd happens in the UK version of the
demo. The Jag at the start of the demo wasn't moving at all when I did it...
it just rolled to a stop instead of being slow moving. And in fact there was
no one in it at all. I drove around for a while but kinda paused it and
forgot that the demo switched off. And then, thinking that might be an error,
tried again only to find it worked again! You can even hop in the Jag and
drive it around.

The thing is however because the dead car happens because of the empty car
parked at the warehouse... but now there is actually 2 empty Jag's on the
map... and so because the car is still parked outside the warehouse,
eventually the timer runs out in the UK one (still after driving around for a
long time though). :(

To those with the US demo, enjoy your ability to free-roam. It seems like a
good thing for a free demo (even if most roads are closed off), and don't
forget to go grab the Esprit as your bonus. :)

                           3.10 - City Works Transit
                           =========================
Location On Map:
----------------
Numerous... however try a couple of these:
Q-12 (Borough Road)
H-10 (St. James Street)
S-5 / T-5 (Broadgate)

They're normally parked on the side of the road to be set up as jumps.

Descriptive Location:
---------------------
Because of requests I've decided to add a descriptive location to the works
car located on St. James Street. This is more or less to finish up the guide
in general completeness.

From the starting point in Great Marlborough Street, turn around 180 and head
to the end of the street. From here make a right turn up Regent and then at
the intersection turn left onto Oxford Street. Follow the street until the
next four way intersection and make another left turn.

Follow this street right until you reach it's end, then make a right turn
into the traffic (wrong way) on Piccadilly. Immediately after the right turn
you made, there is a left turn you can make. This is St. James Street.

Travel down the street and keep an eye out on the right hand side. Eventually
you'll see the truck and trailer parked on that side of the road.

Additional Info:
----------------
These unmarked Works trucks are the ones which bring the trailer ramps to
various locations around the map. They are unhitched from the trailers which
means you can take off with them. Oh, and pressing L3 will start the flashing
yellow lights, like most other cars with lights.

I've only listed a couple of locations here, but if you can remember seeing
others please e-mail me with a street name or map reference and they'll be
added with credit.

                              3.11 - Saab Concept
                              ===================

Location On Map:
----------------
J-8 (Underground Carpark in unnamed street south of Shaftesbury Avenue)

The easiest way to find this carpark again (it appears in one of the
missions) is to go to Soho Square in J-7 and head down Frith Street (past the
Republic, from a few of the missions in the game). Follow the street the wrong
way to it's end then make a left followed by a quick right.

You should find this road bends slightly off to the left (to the right is the
entrance to Chinatown). When you get around the bend the car park is right in
front of you. Go to the bottom most floor of the carpark to find the concept
car.

Descriptive Location:
---------------------
From the starting point again, drive all the way to the end of the street you
start on and follow the corner to Oxford Street. When you get there turn right
and go the next 4 way intersection close down the road. Here make a right
turn into another large traffic lane and keep an eye on the right side. You'll
need to make the 3rd turn off on the right hand side. When you do, make the
first turn to the left and you should find this road bends slightly off to the
left (to the right is the entrance to Chinatown). When you get around the bend
the car park is right in front of you. Go to the bottom most floor of the
carpark to find the concept car.

Additional Info:
----------------
An interesting looking car, it's surprisingly speedy and tough. And you have
to admit those indication and brake lights do look cool.

You can find this car during the game outside Charlie's warehouse in mission
21. However because of the objective of the mission, it's probably not a good
idea to go joy riding in it until you are making your escape in mission 22.

runningmonkey also added this little snippet on the gamefaqs message board
which mentions an alternative location for the car in the main game.

"If you leave Charlies Wharehouse by the backdoor then the Saab
Concept Car is available during "The Prodigal Son" for Hammond
(mission 11). The car is parked in the same place as Carter
finds it during mission 22, except now Hammond gets to drive
it instead. However, if you fail the driving part of this
mission you will respawn out the front where the Lexus is
parked and the Saab is unfortuantely blocked off."

I checked it out (even though it already made logical sense) and it is there,
as the point true that you'll be blocked from getting the Saab as the door to
the warehouse is shut (as is the gate to the lot where the Saab is). Thanks
for the post runningmonkey.

3.12 - Four Wheeled Armored Car
                        ===============================

Location On Map:
----------------
I-12 (Birdcage Walk)

The easiest way to find this is start from Buckingham Palace and follow the
black iron gates on the right hand side of Birdcage Walk. When you reach the
area in I-12, somewhere you will find an open gate leading into a small area
where the four wheeled armored car is sitting on a platform.

Descriptive Location:
---------------------
One hopes you know what Buckingham Palace looks like :)

From facing towards the front gates of the Palace, turn left so your facing
the roadway beside the palace and drive straight ahead, across the roads and
grass, until you reach the wall on the other side. From here turn left again
and follow the fenceline south along the road (this is Birdcage Walk).
Eventually as you drive along you will find an open gate on the right, leading
into a small area where the four wheeled armored car is sitting on a platform.

--

Due to demand, the quickest directions to Buckingham Palace and the armored
car from the starting point.

On the far side will be busses
heading along Piccadilly. Follow them as they get into the right lanes and
keep following until you see an blue gated entrance to a park on your left.

Once in the park head straight (but watch your speed, don't want to flip
your car) from one side of the park to the other. When you exit the other
side of the park, you'll be right in front of Buckingham Palace.

Additional Info:
----------------
Well one can be glad it's bullet proof, but sadly it doesn't take much more
impact than most other cars on the road. It has one unique feature however
which makes it fun. By pushing L3 you can fire upon cars and people, setting
them on fire, and knocking them off the road.

A couple of notes though - don't do it to anything close to you. You can
actually manage to set yourself on fire if it impacts close. Graphics
limitations means you can only set 2 cars on fire at once (as well as numerous
people as well). You can still fire upon cars and knock them off the road, but
they probably won't catch on fire while two others are burning.

<Barticle> has e-mailed me with some additional information regarding the
armored car and why it's located where and how you find it.

"i thought you might be interested to know that i just found a
webpage with a picture of the armoured car - the real one!
unlike the other secret vehicles in the game this one can
actually be found in real life too.

it's part of the Guards Museum on Birdcage Walk and it can be
found exactly where it is in the game, although there's no gap
in the railings and you can't drive it away. :) the picture's
     here:

     http://www.londontaxitour.com/london-museum-guards.htm

you can't see it here but there's a red advert for the museum
bolted onto the street-facing side of the car."

Thanks for that information Barticle. The Taxi Tour website notes a little
more information if you check the above link provided.

The police call the car an "Armored Personnel Carrier" - but it's hardly
anything close to it. It maybe Armored, but apart from the 2 people, I don't
see a whole lot of "personnel" being carried.

                            3.13 - Maserati CoupĂ©
                            =====================

Location On Map:
----------------
J-14 (Horseferry Road)
P-2 (Goswell Road)

First please note that this car only appears in the US and PAL Version 2
editions of The Getaway. It doesn't appear in the original PAL edition.

If you continue to search the area you'll find the
Maserati sitting there as well.

The 2nd Maserati is located on Goswell Road. Thanks to Kingcars66 for
e-mailing me about this one. From the top of Goswell Road, if you look on
your right side, will be a tan colored wall (the wall is a fence made of
hundred of wooden slats on a 45 degree angle. Near it's end will be a short
alleyway with a metal fence at it's end. The Maserati should be located here
(I can't test this out sadly - as I only have PAL Version 1).

If it's not this correct alley, I apologize... but it should be located in
one of the alleys on the same right side of the road nearby. If anyone would
like to mail and confirm the exact alley I would be happy to hear from you.

Descriptive Location:
---------------------

Location #1 - Horseferry Road:

If you
continue to look you'll find the Maserati.

Location #2 - Goswell Road

All credit to Kingcars66 again for this description. I've made some
alterations to it, to include some landmarks which make it easier to check
you're on the right path. However his original description wasn't at all bad.

- Go forward and take the first left, then turn right onto the main (this is
  Oxford Street) and follow it.
- Go straight along Oxford for a long time until you reach a fork in the road.
The traffic going forward in this direction is going to the left, that is
what you need to follow as well.
- Follow this road straight for a long time as well until you come to another
fork in the road (right after an intersection). The fork has a lot of
traffic lights in it. You want to follow the left path of the fork again.
Doing so you'll note you're going slightly uphill.
- Follow it straight. You'll go through a major intersection once you're
finished going up the hill - but keep going straight ahead of you and
follow the road as it curves. You'll eventually go up another hill and
past some hedges on a narrow road before meeting a t-junction with your
current road. From here left again.
- Follow this road shortly uphill again to another t-junction. There will be
a red and white barricade in front of you. Turn right and follow the road.
- Very shortly after you made that right will be another fork with a green
clock in the middle. Turn down the right side of the clock. This is Goswell
  Road where the car is.

From the top of Goswell Road, if you look on your right side, will be a tan
colored wall (the wall is a fence made of hundred of wooden slats on a 45
degree angle. Near it's end will be a short alleyway with a metal fence at
it's end. The Maserati should be located here (I can't test this out sadly
- as I only have PAL Version 1).

If it's not this correct alley, I apologize... but it should be located in
one of the alleys on the same right side of the road nearby. If anyone would
like to mail and confirm the exact alley I would be happy to hear from you.

Because I was unable to find this car in the original PAL version of the game
it was first brought to me by ChrisFine after rumors of the new car appeared
on the GameFAQ's forum for The Getaway.

I first received this e-mail from <ChrisFine>

"I think I have found a new hidden car. In the American version
I own in the same underground garage as the Peugeot 306 Modified
is a blue with 2 white stripes Maserati type looking thing. It's
very cool looking. There is still the broken down car and the
Peugeot 306 Modified, but there is also the Masrerati."

Chris later followed up by noting that the car came in grey/silver and orange
with black stripes. Along with that he sent along an image of the car.

Thanks for that Chris.

||||||||||||||||||| SECTION #4 - CAR LOCATIONS IN GAME MODE ||||||||||||||||||

For the benefit of a few, here is a quick list of all 12 cars and their
location in the normal game mode. Some of these only appear during certain
missions, others you can only grab during the missions which aren't limited
by time issues.

1.  Lotus 7
    - Not currently available (corrections welcomed).

2.  Nissan Skyline GTR-33
    - Driven by Chinese triads in and around Hyde Park.
    - Located at grid U-12, Bermondsey Street. Same location as in Free
Roaming mode. Check it's section for more details.

3.  TVR Cerbera
    - Located at the start of Mission 8. Drive straight and down the
street at the beginning of the mission. Eventually down the street
on the right hand side will be a petrol station. If you check
behind the main shop of the station you'll find the car parked.
    - Located at the start of Mission 12. Return into Jolson's manor
through the basement, the same way as in the mission before. When
you reach the ground floor, head around the stairwell you just
came up and you'll find a garage with the Cerbera in it.
    - Located during Mission 14. Once you reach the compound, check
to the left by some trucks as soon as you enter off the street.
It should be behind a couple of trucks.
    - Located during Mission 15. Same location as Mission 14... you'll
need to back up from where you start and check to your right.
    - Located at the start of Mission 21, in Jolson's Garage. From the
start of the mission head further into the Garage area rather than
exiting the way you came in... at the last garage the door will
roll up allowing you to drive out in this car.

4.  Lotus M250
    - Located at the start of Mission 21, in Jolson's Garage. From the
start of the mission head further into the Garage area rather than
exiting the way you came in... at the last garage the door will
roll up allowing you to drive out in this car.

5.  Go-Kart
    - Not currently available (corrections welcomed).

6.  Peugeot 306 Modified
    - Located at grid J-14, Horseferry Road. Same location as in Free
Roaming mode. Check it's section for more details.

7.  Golf Cart
    - Not currently available (corrections welcomed).

8.  Royal Parks Daihatsu HiJet
    - Located at grid C-9 and C-10, Hyde Park. Same location as in Free
Roaming mode. Check it's section for more details.

9.  Lotus Esprit
    - Located at grid D-5, intersection of Baker Street and Marylebone
Road. Same location as in Free Roaming mode. Check it's section
      for more details.

10. City Works Transit
    - Located at grids Q-12, Borough Road, and H-10, St. James Street.
Same locations as in Free Roaming mode. Check it's section for
      more details.

11. Saab Concept
    - Located during Mission 11, sitting outside Jolson's Warehouse
      (small lot off Southwark Street).
    - Located during Mission 21 and 22, sitting outside Jolson's
Warehouse. While it's able to be driven during Mission 21, it's
best you wait until Mission 22 as you escape the warehouse
complex to take off in it.

12. Four Wheeled Armored Car*
    - Located during Mission 12. Same location as in the Free Roaming
      mode.
    - Located during Mission 23. Same Location as in the Free Roaming
      mode.

* - Note that in the game you can't use the turret to blow up cars. This
feature is disabled and only works in Free Roaming mode.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||| SECTION #5 - F.A.Q. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Q - I've seen map references of North, West, East, and South. But there is no
bearings on the map. Can you explain?

A - Easily. Most people refer to the top of the map as north and so on. It
just makes things easier when you can go "turn west onto such-and-such
street" or so forth. I however haven't made things that easy for myself
and have given directions as best I can for people who may not have the
map (a rental or some such).

Q - Where do you start the Free Roaming mode?

A - Grid reference H-7, or in road name terms, Great Marlborough Street. You
are facing east towards the intersection with it and Poland and Noel
Streets (one grid across in I-7). If you drive to the intersection and
turn left your on Oxford Street.

Right near Sony Music's offices to be exact. If you're ever in London, pop
on in and ask why you couldn't do this in the game? :)

Q - Is there anything else to do in Free Roaming mode?

A - Apart from driving like a loon, shooting at stuff, and finding these cars,
sadly no. It's just to allow you to get used to London. Good thing though
if they come out with add ons and sequels with the same map. At least
you'll know all of it well.

Q - Do you know if there is anymore cars you haven't found?

A - If I knew that then things would be different. I thought I'd found all of
the cars because I was told there was 10 which I went searching for
(according to Sony's own PS2 website back at the start of November), but
for example I had two more new locations for already listed other cars
sent into me recently which have been added. I won't be surprised if
there are more doubles of cars hidden off in small areas I or others
haven't yet found. But I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

The PAL version 2 edition as well as the US version both contain an 11th
hidden car. This is already noted in the guide.

A - Hey I'm stuck in Mission #XX... None of the mission guides up so far are
    completed, can you help me?

Q - This isn't a mission guide, so no. Anyway, last time I posted a quick
guide for Mission #21 on the message boards people just kept re-posting
my text and getting the thanks for it. I've decided _not_ to do that
    again. heh

As of writing there are also complete mission FAQ/walkthrough guides you
can find for the game at GameFAQs.com, so there shouldn't be any reason
that I should get anymore e-mails like this :)

Q - Can you provide me with a list of cars you can get in the game?

A - Not in this guide, no. But Sony UK posted a list of cars at the UK
PlayStation website back in November however if you want a list.

    http://uk.playstation.com/news/newsStory.jhtml?storyId=102843_en_GB_NEWS

If you need a list with descriptions then you should check the
FAQ/walkthroughs over at GameFAQs.com - they should hopefully provide
you with a complete and detailed listing of the common cars you can steal
off the streets. Most seem to have very detailed writeups too.

Sony's US Getaway site has the entire car list in Flash as well. It
includes a small thumbnail of nearly each car as you put your mouse over
the top of the name. Quite handy if you want to know what car is what by
just their looks. Under the car option obviously.

    http://us.playstation.com/games/SCUS-97133/

Q - Where is this downloadable version of the map you've got with the cars
    marked on it?

A - It's located at http://lucid.orcon.net.nz

Or you can get a version from Sony, at the address in the question above.

Q - Can you enter buildings in Free Roaming?

A - No, most of them are closed up from the way they were during the
missions. Kinda sad when you think about it... would have been cool
getting into mass gun fights again.

Q - How can you write a guide for a game that isn't out?

A - *stares blankly* The PAL release has been out for almost a month now...
Just because there is no US version as of writing doesn't mean it hasn't
    come out elsewhere.

US release is Jan 22nd last I heard. I hope the bonus cars have stayed
the same so I don't have to continue with massive amounts of updates. LOL

It's out now... so you can all be happy about it.

Q - What's all this fuss to do with the BT van?

A - BT made an upcry about the ability to kill one of it's servicemen in the
game (and probably the fact you don the outfit of one and can go on a
killing spree as well) and it's outcry caused Sony to pull the game from
shelves and reissue the game altered during Jan 2003.

Anyone from the UK, Europe, Australia or New Zealand... or any other PAL
location with an original copy of the game (any copy between it's
December release and shortly after New Years) now owns a semi-rare item.
I say semi-rare as sales are probably somewhere in the hundreds of
thousands... not exactly $100 on eBay value just yet. Maybe in a year or
two though. Keep an eye out.

Just a note to say that "Version 2" is now apparently out in shops in PAL
regions now which replaces the BT van with a white van. The US version is
due soon as of writing (just a few days) and expected to contain the same
    white van.

If you're looking out for an original Version 1 PAL copy then ask the
person to give Sony's catalog number from the case or disc. It shouldn't
end in "-2" or else that's the V2 edition.

Q - What's all this _other_ fuss to do with alterations to the US version?

A - After SCEA (that's Sony Computer Entertainment America) made a fuss about
the nudity in Acclaim's BMX XXX and ordered the game to be censored (from
what I've been told all that meant was to add BMX XXX signs over any nude
video parts), there has been a lot of questioning about how they will
handle the content in The Getaway. The PAL release of BMX XXX was left
untouched by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) and was released
    fully uncensored.

The fact is, for me at least, rumors of alterations to the US version of
the game were around long before even the BMX thing, meaning that when
they turned up doing this to BMX XXX they increased the likelihood of
making possible edits to the game. And now talking to a few people it
    seems true that they did.

If you talk to someone from a games store, there is more chance that
they'll tell you about an uproar about racial content, and it's true,
there is some racial overtones during the game as well as some fairly
explicit remarks. If SCEA went nuts about the nudity in BMX XXX however
then it's only the tip of the iceberg as far as The Getaway goes.

But will it be edited, and if so how badly? We'll know soon enough I
    guess.

Update - The nudity has been cut in the US version. As has some swearing
(mainly the use of the word cunt in the subtitles of one scene) and a
couple of scenes have been reportedly been slightly edited too. These
same edits have also been made to the PAL Version 2 of the game as well
(everything except the nudity that is).

Q - You must have missed some bonus cars. I've seen screen shots with the
Audi TT, BMW's, and even Jag's.

A - I haven't missed anything. Those cars weren't included in the end. My
guess is they were given a copy of the near complete game and decided
to backout of supplying their cars to the game because of it's
    contents. Too bad...

BMW must have pulled out at the very last minute too. Their car model
is reportedly still on the disc, and the ads for the Getaway that Sony
put as promotion on their own demo discs at the end of last year show
the actors driving around in a BMW (specifically during one "mission"
shown in the add where Mark drops off Johnny using it - the car in the
    game is instead a Honda).

Q - I was wondering where you can find the Bentley that is driven by
Charlie's boys? Can you drive it in the game or is it just for Charlie
    and his mob?

A - The car seems to only be included in the scenes where it appears. After
all this time driving around I'm sure someone or myself would have seen
it somewhere and made a note of it. Sorry.

Q - Is there anyway in Free Roaming mode to get the grey unmarked Vectra that
    Carter drove during the game?

A - Not as far as I know. I originally thought you might find it and a couple
of cop cars parked at Snow Hill, but there is nothing in the Police
    Station yard.

Q - Have you heard about the entering locations "glitch" in Free Roam?

A - Yes, I've heard about it.  Apparently if you finish the final mission
(Land of Hope and Glory) with Carter again and then as soon as you can go
Free Roaming all of the games interior locations will be accessible. I
have no idea in the truth of it though as I haven't tried it. If it does
the only importance of that to me is that the extra cars in the game mode
can probably be gained from their respective locations. But seeing as you
can get them all elsewhere anyway - then I guess the other point is
    running through empty buildings.

Q - You know the Free Roam mode fairly well right? Can you give me some good
locations for jumps and other places where I can pull of stunts in a car?

A - Well if I were to list all these sorts of places it would kinda take the
fun out of driving around in Free Roam mode wouldn't it? Take your time
to drive around and find places where you like to cause chaos. But keep
an eye out for raised areas, stairs, and other places.

Q - Do you think you can add details on the cars hidden in the US and UK
    demos?

A - Well apart from the Lotus Esprit there isn't much in the way of hidden
cars known. But the fact that you can't free roam in the demo anyway
kinda takes away from that fact anyway. That said there is a glitch which
allows a kinda "semi-free roaming" mode which allows you to drive around
in the US version, and sort of in the UK version. All this info can be
found in the Lotus Esprit section.

Q - Where is the map that is supposed to be with the game?

A - The US version of the game doesn't include a map oddly. As to why SCEA
decided to not include one is a complete mystery to me, but you can get
a map from the website I have for this Getaway guide.

    http://lucid.orcon.net.nz

Sony also has one (you need to sign up though) at their official Getaway
    website.

    http://us.playstation.com/games/SCUS-97133/

If any other maps appear online I'll be linking to them as well.

Q - How can I make that map printable?

A - You'll need to resize it with a paint/photo editing program. I'm not
currently providing a printable version, but I am considering making
a 2 page printable version to post on the site sometime due to demand.

Q - Where can you find the black Nissan Skyline in the game?

A - You can only find in much the same way as the normal game. The ones the
Triads are driving around. The best places to find them are around Hyde
and Green Park's, and near Piccadily. You will need to kill the two in
the cars first before you can take it however.

Q - Can you e-mail me a copy of the Getaway map from your site?

A - No.

There is a general JPG version in a non zip format which should just open
    in your browser.

Q - Is there anyway to play free roaming mode with Carter instead or Mark?

A - Yes, if you have an Action Replay or GameShark you can do so. Check out
www.codejunkies.com for details. Other than that, sadly no.

Q - Hey, haven't you see that riced out Honda Civic around? Why's that not in
    your guide?

A - You mean such as the one in the Chinatown carpark? Because it's no
different than the Honda's that the Triads drive in the game. It's the
    exact same thing.

Q - Is there a code for the Free Roaming mode?

A - Yes, yes there is. At the title screen, before you push x/start to bring
up the main menu, press the following.

Triangle, Triangle, Triangle, Left, Square, Triangle, Triangle, Triangle,
    Left, Circle.

If done correctly the screen will flash a tinted yellow briefly, and
    you'll hear a woman screaming.

Q - Because The Getaway hasn't been released here in the US yet can you give
me your opinion on the game having already played it?

A - Seeing as a few people asked me about this, I've added a review section
as well as a few links to reviews online. Hope this helps. Scroll down
    below to check it out.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||| SECTION #6 - REVIEW |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

As explained in the FAQ, I've decided to add my own 2 cents (or maybe as I
re-read this 2 dollars worth as I've tended to rattle on like I normally do)
on the game as well as provide a few links to other reviews due of the number
of people asking for my opinion... or at least the opinion of people who've
already played the game :)

INTRODUCTION - Comparisons and Design
-------------------------------------

The first thing I see most people ask is how much in common does it have with
the Grand Theft Auto series. Even though that's a loaded question if ever
anyone asked one, it's a places to start this review off. With the things it
does have in common with GTA... something's it's better at than Vice City,
such as being more realistic yes, but at the same time other things in common
come well under par with GTA too (such as ease of controls perhaps). On the
new side of things I like are details like you can take hostages for example
and use them as human shields, and when you hop into cars you have your
character threaten drivers to leave cars. There are other cool touches with
the cars and fighting too. The ability to take hostages is nicely animated and
fun... it's main point is to stop the cops from shooting you. Criminals
usually don't care though, they'll normally still shoot because they're the
bad guys after all.

But really it comes down to the fact the game is much more cinematic to the
point of being a movie (there is a heavy amount of cut-scenes - but not to the
point where it's a chore to sit through them). To support the cinematic thing
as well, the game is actually displayed in a "wide screen" movie format which
means if you have a widescreen TV there is more of the screen to see, and if
you don't the picture is however still unaffected. The exploration is limited
in events but at the same time it's not. You can do a certain amount as you
possibly explore around tens of square miles of London streets.

In these regards one actually might finding yourself comparing the game more
to Infogrames Driver titles (specifically Driver 2 - right down to the odd
running animation for the main character) but then you find yourself right
back into the swing of things with GTA comparisons. As it stands this game is
going to get nothing but comparisons to other games because of how long it
took to get out. That's what you get for it I guess.

For this review I will be focusing on everything but story related issues to
avoid any possible spoilers (because I'm not mean like that). If you want
reviews which do include this sort of thing, please feel free to check the
links I've left at the end of my review. They more than likely do.

GRAPHICS & DEVELOPMENT - Use and Issues
---------------------------------------

There are some very minor framerate problems here and there and some rare
sound effects ones as well. The slowdown I noticed the first time I played
actually doesn't seem to be that common as that first time... it's only
certain built up city areas when you get a traffic jam or something that slow
a little, but other than that, it's generally steady. You can also get some
graphical glitches when you manage to get a WHOLE lot of speed as the city
catches up in loading... but even then it has to be really, really fast which
in this game is hard to manage with all of the traffic and road signs. Design
wise the main characters running animation just doesn't look right (but most
of the other characters are well animated and the cut-scenes are really good).

One of the things that pleases me most is that there is no map loading wait
time. Given the size of the map it's hard to believe for a game this huge
there is no loading time anywhere, even when it comes to entering the
buildings. The only time there is any such loading is during cut-scenes and
loading after saving and so forth, and even then its not the longest. More
games need to work on their loading abilities and follow this example... it
proves even Rockstar should be able to pull it off with the next GTA title
(the Getaway's map loads in a similar fashion - except it's draw distances are
a lot better than GTA's and it doesn't have the loading that Vice City had).
Surprisingly I noted that the "fogging" added to the distance isn't actually
to hide graphical limitations - because the demo of the game had none and
looked fine - in seems more and more likely they've added to greyness to make
it look more like London.

The maps size is a mixed bag. But that all depends who is playing I guess...
in any case it is just very impressive looking however. There is a general
level of detail to everything. If you don't like London - then driving through
tens of square miles (reports vary from 21 to 40 or so) of real London streets
with only your indicators to guide you might be annoying. I found it semi fun
expect for when being rammed off the road by like 3 or 4 cop cars... and being
shot at by a gang of Yardie hoods (among others).

The cars themselves are awesome. All licensed cars (numbering into no
idea...). All nicely destructible and detailed while they're at it. You can
shoot out windows and smash other body parts realistically (that is, bullet
holes appear in windows and they crack properly, cars dent and lights smash
properly, etc.) and the cars destructibility is all around more real. The
number probably would have been higher if more companies had signed on, but a
lot probably didn't want to be associated with such a violent game.

MISSIONS, WEAPONS, CONTROLS AND CONTENT - What makes it work?
-------------------------------------------------------------

There is a good weapon selection. Having dual weapons is fun too. Generally
just your pistols and a few rifles and machine guns. There are also a couple
of hand weapons (crowbars, bats, etc.).  The controls might be a mixed bag...
the on foot action stuff takes a while to get used to and the driving is a
little odd at first too if you've come out of a stint of Vice City like... but
not as bad as to say it's realistic and/or difficult or anything. As for the
combat... well for the most part the fighting is all nicely organized once you
get used to the controls (or overcome the flaws you find. There is a manual
and auto aim, you can stick to walls and shoot around corners, take blind
shots, pop up from crates, blind shoot over them as well. Roll. Switch from
side to side on a door... do just about everything but dive and slide into a
room. It's generally well controlled, the only problem comes from tight camera
work. Not a problem most of the time, but just the tight angles in small rooms
result in the occasional problems.

The on foot missions also have the occasional stealth mission where you have
to sneak around areas to get somewhere your not or find someone in a place
your not supposed to be... I wanted to give an example but I'm trying to keep
this plot spoiler free. It might take a little getting used to at first but if
you overcome the moderate learning curve during the first mission you should
be fine.

As for one thing it deserves is it's 18 certificate over here (and it leaves
me to wonder what the US version will receive from the ESRB). There is a lot
of swearing and even topless nudity (one of the missions in the game takes you
to a strip club in Soho). Australia surprisingly got away with a few second
alteration but someone told me given Sony's weird stance on BMX XXX in the US
that the swearing could possibly be bleeped or cut down over there upon
release a while back... and the swearing could be considered the lesser of the
"evil" in the title by outraged soccer moms. LOL In any case this is a very
adult oriented title and content wise could possibly make complaints about
Vice City seem like a playground fight in some respects.

THE PROBLEMS - Complaints, issues, bugs and glitches
----------------------------------------------------

As for the bigger list of things I'm not so impressed by well the top of the
list has to be the Semi-dumb partner AI. During the game you'll get missions
where you have someone else with you who can't die or else the mission is
over. Not so good on the fact they like to act independently and shoot rapidly
at enemies like a psycho. Not to mention they stand around shooting at cops
when your sitting in the new car you just stole instead of hopping in right
away... I wish as soon as you got the car they'd run straight for it, but as
it stands you normally have to get the car closer to them before they'll hop
in.

On that point I'm glad an all the cops are actually semi-smart in this (lost
count the number of times I've been arrested), but their ramming techniques
when it comes to swerving head on into the car your driving leaves something
to be desired... just because it happens too much and becomes annoying to have
to swerve around them a lot. Might not be the easiest thing to explain, but if
you pick up the game in the future you'll see what I mean.

Some missions require you to try, try, and try again. Normally this wouldn't
bug me so much, but a couple of the missions are just hellish when it comes to
combat and learning what to do that you just have to retry to learn one new
thing before you make another mistake and have to restart again. It's not very
forgiving in this department. On the other hand, it does have like an "auto
save" mid-mission when you're between driving and on foot sections, so when
you die you don't have to start right from the start of everything you've done
this mission.

Healing is something I'm not sure about, I think it was the time factor that
was annoying rather than anything else - the concept is original enough for
me. The way you heal is just to let go of the controller near a wall and the
character will lean against the wall. This would be fine if it didn't take
like a minute or two everytime you needed to do this and that you were still
prone to being attacked while doing it. In some of the missions you end up
doing this every few minutes because your getting shot at so much.

Glitches are another concern. I'm yet to determine which has been worse out of
VC and The Getaway, but I think VC is only just still ahead. At first The
Getaway seemed fine but I've seen some fairly shocking glitches. Hopefully
some of these will be fixed in the US release (and apparent UK re-release) but
some people have managed to play with no problems while others have had
nothing but problems. I can only hope your one of the lucky few who don't as
some of them can be a real pain.

Length though has to be the games biggest flaw for me. There are only 12
missions per character (well each mission is generally split into two or three
sub-missions) which means if you sit around for a few days you might be able
to finish it. Not the longest of games which is a shame considering you have
such a large area of London to play in. The Free Roaming mode will hopefully
add on another few hours, maybe a day at most, but that's not a whole lot. I
also know the lack of onscreen guides is going to also bug some people as much
as the length. This is supposed to add to the whole cinematic thing, but at
times it's more frustrating than good. I however I'm over it by this point and
realize what they're doing with the game.

THE BOTTOM LINE - The final word
--------------------------------

Sony says they're going to make additional Getaway games using the engine
(given the development time and money they'd have to if they don't get sued by
a bunch of companies first after this whole BT thing) so I can only hope they
iron out some of the issues with the game before hand. Considered as a game
for me it's really a mixed bad... it's little better than a case of "great
idea, not so great result" - there are a lot of things about the game that
stand out a lot better than I expected, but it still has it's level of
problems. It's a great concept, but to me it just wasn't executed to it's full
extent or full possible length... and for a game that's been in development
for as long as it has, to end up like that is quite the bit disappointing.
