||||||||||||||||||||||||| SECTION #1 - INTRODUCTION ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

I decided it was time for this glitch list. While playing through the game for
both my first time as well as subsequent plays and for my hidden cars guide I
must have come across well more than a dozen glitches alone, and I knew there
were more out there too from the number of complaints I've seen during the
last month or so since the games release to the PAL format. With the US
version out now I expect this list will continue to grow.

The game will sometimes play nice for people, and there are infrequent reports
of people finding no major glitches at all. Other times you can be given every
glitch in the book and then some. I honestly haven't had a single game myself
where there hasn't been at least one of the following glitches appear so there
must be some very, very, lucky people out there.

I've currently listed every glitch I've come across personally, or had
strongly mentioned to me at first. On top of that, most of these have also
been mentioned by at least one other person if not a large handful of people
to give me some sort of idea on how frequent it is. Beyond that I've also
tried to recreate as many of them as I can as well to make sure I can see just
common it is.

If you have a new glitch which is not listed then read section 2 to find the
information I need to list the glitch and send it on in to be included.

If you own either PAL Version 2 of the game or the US version and any glitch
listed still works for you in your version, then also please e-mail me, I'll
be glad to have glitches from different versions confirmed as well.

BTW, if you're looking for a guide on the Hidden Cars in Free Roaming, then I
invite you to check out my guide hosted at GameFAQ's or located at my website
- http://lucid.orcon.net.nz

On with the guide,
- Rob

|||||||||||||||||| SECTION #2 - READ THIS BEFORE YOU E-MAIL ||||||||||||||||||

Before you send in any glitches, please read these notes of stuff I require
and don't require in your glitches submissions.

1. You need to tell me which version you have.

Sony has put out 2 versions in PAL areas alone, and we have no idea what has
been fixed and what hasn't at this time. Even more so, new glitches could have
happened. There is also the American NTSC-U/C version out as I'm writing this
which could have a number of these glitches fixed.

To tell the difference between the 2 PAL versions then all you need to know is
that the 2nd version doesn't have the BT Van in it for Mission 7. Instead you
just have a white van. Someone also mentioned that the disc has a coding of
"2" beside Sony's catalog number (SCES 51159). However until that can be
confirmed (I only have the first version so I have no idea about the new one)
then the van thing is the only way to know.

2. Make a note of the mission number or mission name if it's a mission glitch.

I need this for just basic info knowledge. Most glitches sent in I will also
try to recreate, so this info is well needed. If it's a free roaming mode
glitch, you'll need to give me a rough idea of where this glitch happened in
your description.

3. Don't send me any large attachments if you've had the ability to make
   screens of the glitch.

E-mail me about it first and mention it. I'll request them if I require it.

4. If the glitch detail is already listed but is just a note to tell me it
works in another version, then please make sure you note the number or
name of the glitch in the guide. Fairly obvious I know, but just for
   reminders sake.

5. "The Getaway - Glitch" has to be somewhere in the e-mail's subject.

All others will be ignored. I get so much e-mail that if you haven't taken the
time to tell me what your mail is about, why should I take the time to read
it? That's what the subject line is there for.

Once this is all entered, put in your glitch you've found and mail it away. I
can't promise I will get back to you about it, but I'll normally reply to most
e-mails that I can.

||||||||||||||||| SECTION #3 - WHICH VERSION IS WHAT VERSION? ||||||||||||||||

Due to some confusion on the matter I'm adding this section to explain the
differences in versions of The Getaway since it's release. If you have an
addition or correction to this list, then please contact me with it.

The Getaway - PAL VERSION 1 - SCES-51159
| First Released: 11th December 2002
| On Sale Until Shortly After New Years 2003.

| The "base" version of The Getaway. All other changes marked in other
| versions are made over this original release.

| Additional Notes:
| - Australian version is mostly unaltered to get it's release. An apparent
|   small change to one scene involving the torture to Johnny Chai is made.
|   Other than this the game seems to be exactly the same as PAL Version 1.

The Getaway - PAL VERSION 2 - SCES-51159-2
| First Released: Early Jan 2003

| Alterations to this version include the following:
| - Removal of the BT Van and all references to "BT". Van is now just a
|   standard plain colored van.
| - Additional of 1 more bonus car to the Free Roaming mode.
| - Swearing is slightly edited, as are a few scenes. Why, we don't know
|   but they just are.

The Getaway - NTSC U/C VERSION - SCUS-97133
| First Released: 22nd Jan 2003

| Alterations to this version include the following:
| - Removal of the BT Van and all references to "BT". Van is now just a
|   standard plain colored van.
| - Additional of 1 more bonus car to the Free Roaming mode.
| - Removal of nudity in scenes involving strip clubs.
| - No map included in the box (no idea why), just a poster.
| - Seems to also contain the same censorship edits from the V2 of the PAL
|   release.

|||||||||||||||||||||||| SECTION #4 - THE GLITCH LIST ||||||||||||||||||||||||

Welcome to the meat of the guide - the glitch list. Each glitch has been
detailed with basic info and description, as well as how common it is/how
difficult it is to recreate (under "Encounter Rate"), which version(s) it
appears in, and if the glitch has a Solution.

As of the first version, all glitches are from the PAL Version 1 of the game.
If you have the PAL Version 2 or the US Version (NTSC) and know if one of
these glitches works in one of those versions I'd be glad to hear from you.

Please note that I've omitted the number of small technical glitches which
would otherwise bog down the list - such as minor clipping problems, sound
glitches etc. These are all common on their own, however if they are included
as part of a major glitch, please make note of them.

Onwards.

Common        - Happens Often
Fairly Common - Happens Occasionally

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

                       i. - Not on the Stairs, Hammond!
                       --------------------------------

Location:
Various, but most common in Mission 11 - "The Prodigal Son"
Encounter Rate:
        Fairly Common
Known Versions It Appears In:
        PAL Version 1
The Lowdown:
Hammond goes buggy on stairs. Won't fight enemies, won't pick up
        weapons, etc.
Submissions by:
GeekBoy (gamefaqs board - additional information)

Kinda weird one this. Occasionally you'll find throughout the game that
Hammond (or even Carter, but not as often) will quit responding to anything
but movements to go up and down the stairs - leaving you open to gun fire and
not being able to fight back. This is most annoying in Mission 11 where guys
will come down the stairs with shotguns and kill you easily at close range.
Especially if for some reason Yasmin hasn't joined you inside. More on that
later.

On top of that, enemies killed on the stairs who drop weapons, won't be picked
up by Hammond.

Geekboy adds:
"If you try to recover health on stairs by leaning against the
walls, Mark will lean for a second then stand up again, then
lean again, etc., etc. So, don't recover health on stairs."

This is indeed correct, and only goes to make things worse if you're being
shot at - you can't even heal.

Solution:
Avoid as much combat on the stairs as possible. Make sure Yasmin is
        with you during Mission 11.

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

                          ii. - When Yasmin Attacks!
                          --------------------------

Location:
        Various
Encounter Rate:
        Very Common
Known Versions It Appears In:
PAL Version 1, PAL Version 2, NTSC Version
The Lowdown:
If Yasmin gets in the way of you attacking someone and you shoot her
she'll attack, and even sometimes kill, Mark if no one else gets in
        the way first.
Submissions by:
        FrankieV (e-mail - additional information)
        d38dm8nw81k1ng (e-mail - additional information)

This isn't really a glitch, but it can be annoying enough at times to be up
there with them. If you happen to hit or shoot Yasmin and there are no enemies
to take up her time (and sometimes even when there are) then she'll shoot back
at Mark or hit him, normally constantly until your dead.

The annoying part of this comes in when often she'll manage to get in your
line of sight and you'll shoot her by accident.

FrankieV has this tidbit to say:

       "You have:
         Solution:
         Try to avoid shooting Yasmin

Good idea - but this is more of a work-around.
Real solution is to shoot an enemy and then she switches
        to your side again."

Well it's a good idea, but that all depends on the fact that you firstly
don't kill any enemies around at the time you first shoot her or that there
are actually any enemies in the area.

Even then she will occasionally ignore enemies or that you're shooting them
and constantly pummel you with gun fire or smack you over the head constantly
before you even get the chance too correct the problem.

There is more work to do in your solution than there is in the point - trying
not to shoot her at all in the first place is the only way of making sure you
don't get hurt by her at all - she can do way more damage to you in a shorter
time than enemies can.

When I sent this reply to FrankieV he had some additional information to add
to the original information:

"Yeah - your right. When she is close by, the smack from the gun
can be lethal. And if there are no enemies to speak of, then this
        solution can not be applied.

Usually, the enemy is still alive, because thats who you meant to
kill when you hit Yasmin instead. However, I have been in the
situation where all enemies have been killed and I shot her
afterwards. And if she was close by, then this solution would be
hard to apply. The trick is not to target her by pressing R1
        again."

Thanks again Frank.

d38dm8nw81k1ng adds an additional piece of info should you accidentally shoot
Yasmin on the streets.

"...if you shoot Yasmin on the streets, you can get in a car and
        she will stop shooting you."

Solution:
        Try to avoid shooting Yasmin.
_Try_ to shoot enemies and get Yasmin back on track.
If you're on the streets, hop into a car.

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

                          iii. - Get Carter (Moving)
                          --------------------------

Location:
Mission 21 - "The Jolson Files"
Encounter Rate:
        Very Common
Known Versions It Appears In:
        PAL Version 1
The Lowdown:
While leaning against some crates in the warehouse in stealth mode,
Carter is pushed standing still to another part of the warehouse by
a pallet moved by a crane.

This one is about timing... but I found it first as a complete fluke. After
getting into the main part of the warehouse and knocking over the guy you had
to follow real quick, two guys will talk over by the stairs leading to the
basement. Now you have to hide behind the first crates to begin with, but as
soon as the two are standing together at the top of the stairs you can move to
the second set which is closer to the basement entrance.

Leaning against the side so that you can get a view of the stairwell door
sides, wait until one guy goes downstairs. Keep leaning against the wall and
don't do anything. Eventually a pallet will move close and the camera angle
will be pushed forward. After that it'll push against Carter. He'll stay with
the pallet until just before it's put down. And don't worry - you still won't
get seen.

Solution:
Move before or after pallet goes through the area, but either way this
glitch isn't really harmful to begin with. Just funny.

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

iv. - Quit Hanging On Me!
                          -------------------------

Location:
        Various
Encounter Rate:
        Common
Known Versions It Appears In:
PAL Version 1, PAL Version 2, NTSC Version
The Lowdown:
The game freezes and sound hangs, either stutter or loop.
Submissions By:
        pathogen [gamefaqs board - confirmation]
        PaPa Schenn [e-mail - confirmation]
John D Dragon [gamefaqs board - confirmation]
Target Master [gamefaqs board - confirmation]
        Miles Hodgetts [e-mail - confirmation]
Luke Lakeman [e-mail - additional information]
        And several others as well...

I've personally had this happen to me 4 times. The first time I thought it was
because I got out of being arrested and the game didn't like it, but since
then I've had three other odd occasions where the game has just frozen on me
for no reason. Could it be my PS2? Possibly, but then it should be doing it
with other games too I'd say - and this is the only one that it's doing it on.

If anyone else gets the same occasional random hangs and lockups, I'd be glad
to hear from you.

Update - After receiving many e-mails and many comments it has become clear
this is common and happens in all three versions.

Luke Lakeman e-mailed into suggest that the game can unfreeze itself by
ejecting the disc and putting it back in. I've tried it a few times and it
worked a couple of times, but not always. It's worth a shot before you reset
the machine.

Solution:
Eject the disc and put it back in, if not...
        Resetting the console... :/

                         v. - Help, my car got stuck!
                         ----------------------------

Location:
        Various
Encounter Rate:
        Rare
Known Versions It Appears In:
PAL Version 1, PAL Version 2, NTSC Version
The Lowdown:
Car becomes stuck in the ground.
Submissions by:
Eric Burkemper (e-mail - additional information)

During a stint through one of the parks I somehow managed to get my car stuck
partially in the ground. At least enough to get the wheels below the ground.
I could only sit there revving the car to maximum and not going anywhere. I
eventually got out of it by slamming the car into reverse and holding that for
about 20 or 30 seconds, the car made itself unstuck by latching onto something
thankfully.

Seems I'm not the only person to have this happen. Eric Burkemper sends me
this by e-mail:

"On the very First Mission, right after you chase the red car and
go inside the base, I got frustarted at the game and decided to
mess around. I started a to run over people near the bridge area,
when all of a sudden a cop car rams me from behind, causing my car
to rocket foward and to bounce around for a bit near the bridge
enterence point. When I finally try to drive away my car won't
budge, then I reliaze the front whells are imbedded in the ground,
and the back wheels are slowly sinking in, I end up having to get
out and run away. I didn't return to the car, so I have no idea
        what happened to it."

Solution:
        Try reverse?
Exit the current car and steal another car.

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

vi. - Why don't I just call you Christine?
                 ------------------------------------------

Location:
        Various
Encounter Rate:
        Rare (Bordering Fairly Common)
Known Versions It Appears In:
        PAL Version 1
The Lowdown:
Parked or destroyed car acts like fast moving car and "runs" the
        character over, killing them instantly.
Submissions By:
The Jesster (gamefaqs board - additional information)

I first encountered this in Free Roam when a long burned out car I'd driven (I
believe it was one of those 306 Police cars too) managed to kill me when I
clipped the front corner after getting out of the car (and driving it at 2
mph for a meter or two).

After this I heard a few more reports of parked cars and other burned out ones
doing the exact same thing. What seems to be a very random but becoming a more
common enough glitch.

Apparently players aren't the only ones effected by this glitch according to
The Jesster who posted this at GameFAQ's:

"I saw two cops get out of a police car and die like their own
        car had hit them."

Since including this, a few people have noted simular happening to them on
the gamefaqs.com message boards.

Solution:
Don't drive burned out cars and then run in front of them.
Avoid walking near the front of any car.

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

vii. - Quit being a stick in the... ground?
                 -------------------------------------------

Location:
Mission 11 - "The Prodigal Son"
Encounter Rate:
        Common
Known Versions It Appears In:
        PAL Version 1
The Lowdown:
After arriving at Jolson's mansion, Yasmin somehow manages to get
stuck half way in the ground.

No idea at all how this happens, but occasionally Yasmin will sometimes get
stuck in the ground outside the mansion before you enter through the basement.
As long as she isn't killed by cops or something, you can go on ahead without
her, but it's easier to have her along with you for this mission.

This is a semi-odd one, but not too troublesome except for one thing. People
disappearing or reappearing out of nowhere on the streets happens in a lot of
games like this, so I can't say it's too bad. The main problem comes when,
like one time, a cop appeared right in front of me and busted me. Oh well...

I've also hit a couple of pedestrians who've dissapeared as I did so as well.
What was funny about it though, was, about 100 meters down the road, once I
came to a stop by being knocked to the side of the road by a yardie car, as
soon as I was still, the ped who I'd killed and who had dissapeared was
on the ground dead in front of my car. As if she'd been splattered against
my bumper and then fallen off once I'd come to a stop.

I first saw this down by Buckingham Palace myself and thought it was a one-
off, but other reports came in including this happening to cops and other
characters all over map. What sets it off? No idea... but I was causing chaos
with the armored car in free roam if that helps.

J. Chapman had this to add on the matter:

"Attack of the 50ft Person is probably caused by corruption
of the matrix of the character.  The position matrix in 3D
games usually is a 4x4 grid with numbers representing rotation,
position, and scale of an object.

If the three numbers for scale are increased, the object is
"stretched" bigger.  If the three numbers are increased by
different amounts, then the object will also appear to be
skewed -- i.e., foreshortened in length, height, or depth.

Such number corruption is usually caused by numerical
inprecision.  A divide-by-zero can corrupt the numbers badly
enough to make the entire scene and/or object unviewable."

Submissions By:

While it's understandable that you would eventually have engine problems in a
rear engine car from smashing it into a lot of things at the front, some of
the cars react just as they would if the engine was in the front. Right down
to shooting the back of a rear engine car doesn't cause the engine and car to
catch on fire, instead you have to hit the boot space in the front of the car
as normal to set it alight. Kinda funny that the boot space at the front sets
the car on fire.

allen r. writes to add a note about the US version:

"...in the US version you have to shoot the engine bay in the rear
in order to catch it on fire."

Fixed or always like this? Interesting enough. Anyone with PAL V2 want to try

An unbalanced Fire Truck and disappearing world glitch in one. This
really is the best magic trick in The Getaway's World.
Submissions By:
Demon Slayer Deluxe (gamefaqs board - additional information)

This glitch is very common on the fact if you try it, at least the first part
will always work.

Firstly at the start of the mission turn 180 (you need to go in this direction
anyway) and take note the two fire trucks parked face to face on the left side
of the street. If you hit the side of the first one with a car the front of
the truck will dip at a 45 degree angle below the ground leaving the back of
the truck suspended in the air. That's part one of the glitch.

You can even hit it hard enough to make the entire thing disappear sometimes,
or hop into the air and sit there bouncing. It all depends on where you hit
and how hard. To continue the glitch though you need to have it slightly
dipped below ground but still be able to hop in and drive it. To do that
slowly tap the front of the Vectra Carter has into the front corner of the
fire truck (by it's bumper bar). It should grind a little and with luck the
truck will dip down slightly instead of doing something else weird.

Now, Part 2 of this glitch happened when I decided to hop into it and I
actually managed to drive around in it like that (dipped below the ground) for
a short while before the screen flashed white and the truck was "reset" back
to normal road use.

However when I hopped out things got even more odd when the background
disappeared leaving Carter "floating" in white hell (well not exactly white
hell, but rather just the sky backdrop).

If I turned 180 degrees and faced north the game went back to the map (or
showed a part of it in the distance), but if I faced south it went back to the
empty backdrop. As I moved north any vehicles around where included in the
"floating" as well when I looked south.

Eventually after running so far north the game fixed itself so that when I
went south again it was fine. But very weird. I managed to repeat this
multiple times too with ease by just going back to the fire truck, getting in,
and hopping back out. Finally - when I took the glitched truck as far as
Chinatown the game locked up.

Ultimately a completely odd glitch which happened every time I tried to
recreate it. Follow what I've said and you can do it too.

Seems I wasn't the only one to have this happen to them originally by accident
either. Demon Slayer Deluxe added a note about this happening on the topic I
made at GameFAQ's - where and when most people hadn't yet read this guide.

Demon Slayer Deluxe writes:

"I got in a fire engine (think after the Carter mission at the
soho club) and i could go thru walls, got out and everything
        went white."

I've now opened another glitch devoted to the "white hell" - you'll find it
further on in this glitch guide.

Solution:
Don't hit the fire truck and then get in it. :)

Submissions by:
        Buttoxide (e-mail - additional info)

The first time this happened to me was during Mission 20 the first time I
played the game. I turned up at the garages and stopped where the indicators
told me. However when I got inside the garage the entire place was empty. At
first I thought I'd gotten the wrong place, so I exited, rechecked, and re-
entered the place to find the guys were there this time. I'm not the only
person to mention this glitch, but I've classed it as Rare until I hear of it
happening more often.

This isn't however just limited to enemies in a mission. In fact twice I've
driven for minutes at a time through London in Free Roaming mode and had all
of the cars and people on the street disappear until I slowed or crashed
allowing the game to start spawning them again. It created the feeling of an
empty world.

Buttoxide has this to say about the empty world:

"In the lotus 7 in free roam, find a straight road and floor
it. When you reach the top speed, pedestrian cars can no
longer spawn because you are going so fast. Only police cars
will spawn; London turns into a ghost town."

That's what I did myself to get the empty streets originally... and other
fast cars work too.

Solution:
On the 20th mission, drive away from the area then return. Hopefully
        the enemies would have spawned.
For Free Roaming just stop driving. Everything should just catch up in
        being created.

Much like the other Yasmin glitch which isn't a glitch just an annoyance, so
is this one. Simply during any mission where Yasmin is in the car with you and
you need to swap cars, once you're out of the car it can be hard to get her to
come back and get into the next car you've taken. This is only made harder if
there are cops around as she'll stand around and fight them until either
they're all dead or she is.

Solution:
Try and get your car between her and any police, she's more likely to
        get in the car then.
Get the car close to her (but don't hit her of course, or else she'll

knocked out of cars still sitting normally and act like they're getting out of

Another general glitch which is common to some games when high intensive
effects are on screen. Shouldn't happen to you all that often, again well
built up areas and anywhere were you have a lot of traffic and pedestrians,
normally in the middle of a fight with cops might cause it.

If you don't get a lot of slowness it will at least be jerky... this happens
often along places near King's Cross if you floor it through the traffic.

Team Soho seems to have had to cut back on things to stop this from limiting
the game anymore (for example you can only have two cars burning at once).

J. Chapman writes to add:

"Caused just by not having enough horsepower for the physics
and rendering of so many objects.  I think this is why you
can't run very fast in the game -- not for realism but so

The large dock cranes moving around the area have wheels which kill,
but in some cases they're not only survivable but you can walk right
        through them.

I first read about this before I even tried it myself, but people were talking
about just being bumped off the side of the wheels of the cranes rather than
being killed. I don't think it's so much of a glitch (you can bump off some
slow moving cars) and you can knock around people in a car at low speed.

The thing I wasn't expecting however was the fact that when the crane paused
for a second I actually managed to walk through the two big wheels and run for
a short bit. Of course I still got killed in the end, but that was to be
expected.

Solution:

I kinda noticed this when trying out some of the glitches for this guide, and
while it's not exactly a glitch, it's something to note.

If you load old saves, particularly incomplete game slots (there are three
slots to one Getaway save) then quit you'll more than likely find the "Extra
Features" menu inaccessible, or if it's an incomplete Carter file you won't
be able to select the "Free Roaming" option instead.

Solution:
Reload the save you have saved the clear game to. Doing so, even if
you just exit the game straight after will correct the problem.

I've just noticed you don't even need to actually load into the game

One of the funniest glitches I've seen so far was submitted by nordwest on the
glitch topic I made. While I'd heard someone mention this nearly a month
earlier the fact they weren't specific enough lead to me not finding out what
the problem was.

Simply what you need to do is drive to St. Pancras Station in King's Cross and
then get out of the car. In front of the church like station is a very short
but steep set of white stairs which stretch a long way on this building. In a
car they're good for stunt jumping, but if you climb them and then try to
climb back down, then you might find yourself floating in the air. If it
doesn't work at first, keep running up and down the stairs and eventually it
will.

Traffic will stop for you, but you probably won't ever get run over. Cops can
still shoot you (in fact I died still floating from being shot... while my gun
fell to the ground). Walls and barriers will still effect you. You still can
steal cars... not so easily, but it is possible. Mark will get in while still
up in the air and then kind of quickly drop.

It also sometimes glitches where you won't be walking in the air but instead
you stick to the ground... but can walk through cars! This doesn't last
forever but it's fun while it does.

Solution:
Don't walk up and down the stairs.
Walk back to the top of the stairs and you'll be back on the ground.
        Steal a car.

Buttoxide (gamefaqs board - original glitch)

I'll let Buttoxide explain this one:

"Barricade traffic on a hill. Now shoot the drive through the
windscreen three times so he/she gets out. The car will then pop
up to the normal horizontal position when empty, as if there is
no hill. Start at free roam, then just go a little bit forward
and there is a very small hill which it will work on, but there
        are some bigger hills too."

I tried this and it's funny enough to see. It works anywhere there is a hill
and is only even more funnier when the hill is steeper (like for example
outside Charlie's King's Cross compound).

Solution:
None... just don't shoot the drivers on the hills... >_< heh

Buttoxide either has very sharp eyesight or was really taking notice when
driving in certain cars.

"Use the D-pad to steer, and Mark/Frank will lose his 'turning
the wheel' animation. This is especially noticeable in a
convertible/golf cart/go cart. The car will still turn, just
Mark wont turn the steering wheel."

It's funny and true!

Buttoxide also has this note about the Golf Cart worth mentioning here too.

"The golf cart has invisible doors, which Mark will still
        open."

On the same note, something I noted in the Hidden Cars FAQ is that in the
Go-Kart in Free Roaming, Mark will stick his arm out in the air as you reverse
the kart. This is supposed to be the reverse animation for in a car... there
just is no seats in the way anymore.

"Spontaneous combustion. This ones really odd, and has only
happened to me once; I was driving along, the game got really

stayed in the car a bit too long, Mark screamed like he was
on fire and got out, but he was fine. Then about 20 seconds

This one's so rare I though couldn't even try to replicate it, but given
everything that Buttoxide has added I couldn't help but want to add
something this weird to the guide. And this one fits that exactly...

The thing is however I tried to get back into a burning car to kill myself on
to be shot at by one of the gang members as Mark touched the door handle. I
started shooting back when about 20 seconds later Mark just burst into flames
and died. LOL So I guess it's close enough to count :)

From Target Master:

From maccomeau1:

niwdoognevets sent in this interesting glitch by e-mail, and it's worth
trying indeed:

"Ever wanted to get into Buck House? Now you can! In
Free-Roaming mode, take the car you start in (I haven't
managed it in any other car) to Buckingham Palace, but don't
crash too much (you need to get up to a fairly high speed to
do this). Drive down road directly in front of it which
leads to Trafalgar Square, then turn round to face the palace
when you reach the arches. Drive down the middle of the road.
Be sure to dodge the first two sets of traffic lights, then
go right at the third and up the steps of that big monument
thing. You need to make sure you don't hit the big bit in the
middle, but go right of it. It depends on the angle, but
hopefully you'll hit the lion (I think it's a lion) statue
in the top-right, riccochet off and start flipping
uncontrollably right through the centre gates.

The whole area behind the palace is sky, and if you drive
forwards far enough everything but Mark will disappear. You
can also drive through the bushes to your right (when facing
the palace from the front) and end up on (or rather in) the
road outside, but the car is sunken into it. You can get out
and run around, too. I think your depth is random, though.
Sometimes he's standing normally (I think it happens when
you're on the pavement), sometimes his feet are submerged
and sometimes he's up to his waist. If you want to get back
to normal, get into any car except the sunken Lotus."

The first time I tried this I successfully got over the gate but the car got
caught on something and bounced until it went up in flames. The second time
however I made it successfully. There isn't much to see around the area, but
it's still cool to say you managed to jump the gates at Buckingham.

Getting out can be more troublesome at times than he makes out too, sometimes
you'll find you'll get stuck inside with no way out. You'll probably have no
choice but to kill yourself (if you still have your car) or exit to the title
screen if you can't get out.

Charlie Olson (e-mail - additional glitch)
Mike Allen (e-mail - additional glitch)

Following up was previously noted in glitch xiv. - The Best Magic Trick In The
World and xxxvi. - Everybody do the Buckingham Leap!, comes some additional
encounters with White Hell.

Here's what Miles had to say about another in the line of white hell glitches:

"The first was when I was being chased by the yardies, they
severly trashed my car so I exited it. The screen then became
white, although there was one building in the distance I could
see I could not reach it. I had to reset my PS2."

Brian Goley also had another trip to White Hell to share with us.

"this white hell occured in the mission after "Paint the town
red", where you are an escort and you must chase a white
range rover. It occurs for me at least, at the end of the
long straight road after you come out of the underpass. The
range rover makes the left, and as I did, I saw nothing but
white. which of course my car would not pass into as it
collided with an invisible wall. Verry aggrivating. I've
reset my PS2 numerous times, It hasn't seemed to help. >:["

The white hell glitch isn't just held to experiencing white hell alone...
normally it's accompanied by many other little glitches such as being stuck in
walls, or above or below the general graphics. Here's more on such a glitch
from i love cops, posted on the GameFAQ's forum.

"i was driving around in free mode when i decided to jump off
one of those truck/ramps with my slow ass stationwagon. so i
didnt go anywhere, i just rammed the cab of the truck and flip
        the car.

When i crawled out i crawled through the wall into the building.
everything was clear except the sunset... and randomly the cars
would appear going up the slopeed road i was just on as well as
parts of the inner wall. i couldnt go back through the wall so
i wondered around for a good 5 minutes. finally i found a wall
that i could go back through.

the problem, i was somehow about 5 feet above traffic. so i was
walking around above cars and running around the city without
worring about getting hit by a car, but i also couldnt jack any.
Finally after a couple minutes i dropped back down and the game
        resumed as normal."

And another white hell glitch from Charlie Olson...

"...across the street from the Bank of England is a building with
the word Odyssey on it's doorway or awning. If you stand right
by the entrance of this building, and Free Look / Free Aim to
look over at the large entrance door of the Bank (you should be
DIRECTLY across from them), the portion of the bank to Mark's
left will disappear, leaving a backdrop of sky. It only works at
certain angles, which is why I use the Free Look / Free Aim
        method to find it."

Another HUGE white hell glitch from Mike Allen. This glitch occurred
During Mark's 2nd mission where you need to go The Republic in Soho.

"When I first arrived at the destination (the hazards begin to
blink down the road from the club near the corner by the park
square) I did not know which building I was supposed to go
into, so I started to try them all, even if they did not have
"open" doors. That is how I found this:

If you head away from the club on foot towards the park square,
then take your first right at the square, and take your next
right at the next street, and try to run into the first
"doorway" on your right, you will enter inside the building,
but it is a white hell with no ground or buildings - just sky
everywhere. You appear to be able to run around inside this
empty space. Occasionally you will get a glimpse of a passing
car or parts of buildings, but it is very difficult to get out.
At times you think you have escaped to the rendered world only
to turn and be suddenly trapped again. I was only able to
reset the rendering by jacking a passing car, and then
        everything was ok again."

Sure enough this one worked. It's defiantly one of the more funnier goofs
the development team has left in the game, however something I think had
been noted. More on that soon. Just a couple of notes.

Mike questioned if it was mission dependent, but hadn't trialed it himself.
I managed to accomplish the glitch in Free Roaming and during missions in
the area, so no... it's not. You can do this freely anytime you're in the
area.

Secondly, Mike was using the US version, where it seems it's possibly been
altered, as in the original PAL version I used, not only could you freely move
anywhere once you'd gone through the wall, it was also quite simple to get it
to correct itself just by exiting in the exact same place you entered. That
said hopping in a car normally corrects most of these problems.

I will add a final note saying, the "gap" for me, wasn't exactly the first
door on the street (which for those of you with the map is Greek Street, south
of the Soho Square), but the wall on the right of it. If you keep running into
the walls as you travel down the street then you'll more than likely just fall
through it. It's actually that big you can drive a car through it. I managed
that fairly easily.

Any more people had experiences of the "white hell" like any of these? I'm
sure we'll find more, so feel free to drop me a line and explain what
happened.

I'll leave Miles to explain this one:

"If you drive your car up to some boxes, then you shoot the
boxes continuosly and get in your car and drive through the
boxes, the bullet holes are still suspended in mid-air."

Sure enough after pumping about 4 or 5 clips into some boxes (all around them
for added effect) and then driving through the boxes, all of the bullet holes
we're left where they were made. Damn funny.

Solution:
If you don't want the illusion of bullet holes ruined then don't

This seems more like a one off, but I classified it as rare as well as added

happening again somewhat wouldn't be so surprising. I'll let Deus11 tell us
the story:

"This happened in the American Version on mission 12 the first

docks when my car started smoking black so I got out to change
cars.  I got in a new one and Yasmin was about to get in when
she suddenly got into a sitting position floating out side the
car then she fell through the street.  There was a black circle
on the ground were she went through. It then started making the
commentary like "Go faster Mark"  and "You've got to loose

I'll let Zagatosan say his bit, then explain my two bits...

"I was free-roaming awhile ago going at some excessive speeds,
and I of course, rear ended this red Jaguar, the only thing
different this time was that the car's back end remained
RAISED in mid air. And the physics won't let you go under it!

I've had it occur a few more times, but it seems random and
rare. A similar thing also happened to me when I accidentally
entered a burning car, the car went completely vertical
without ANY movement. Then went through the ground. And
another time, flipping the car near stairs or on high ground
        can occaisonally sink the car."

On top of this I've had cars that won't sit still and bounce, cars that rock,
and cars sitting in all manor of weird positions after being hit. All part of
the collision programming I guess.

I also had Lawson Stover send me some random shots of a weird glitch with
two cars parked inside each other. It gave the impression of a six wheeled
car too.

Andrew Wardach also e-mailed me to say he'd gotten his bumper hooked on
another car somehow and aftwerwards found he couldn't exit his car. Weird.

BBall353 also wrote to note of a crash where cars managed to go through each
other and then through a building after he hit them.

"i was doing a mission and i went through this grey brick
path. i accidentally hit this car. it started swaying back
and forht inside the ground. all of a sudden a white lexus

Submissions by:

I got this mail from PaPa Schenn about a glitch in Mission 7. I haven't heard
it before, but considering PaPa make it out to have happened at least 10 times
I have to include it. I never got the chance to test it, but if anyone else
has had this happen to them then I'll be glad to hear about it. Here's what
PaPa Schenn had to say:

"After managing to get to the evidence room, I exit and
see the talk between one of the targets and his lackey
talking about the location of Yasmine. I'll stay on
the inside of the door and they'll only say one
sentence. I stayed for a while and they never
continued so I took a few steps out and they finished
their conversation and the target said hed go talk to
her down in the room. The route he took was heavily
gaurded and (duh) i didnt want to go that way so I
went back my original (and ungaurded) room down to
interrogation room 1 where they said she was being
held. I waited for about 5 minutes and noone showed
up. I looked in the window and it was empty. All of a
sudden the alarm went off. Now people were just
holding their gun at me and letting me run free all
over the place. Only the people with nightsticks would
even think about coming after me."

I did some checking and it is a sort of glitch. The point is they'll try to
clobber you over the head with their guns if you get close, but they won't
actively come close or shoot at you in the uniform. They will however shoot at
you should you draw your gun - but if you put it away they'll act like you
don't have it on you. Just odd...

You'll probably end up getting arrested or smacked over the head until you're
dead in the end.

For some simularly weird events surrounding the police, which include them
going back to normal after this, as well as still being alive after being
dead, check out glitch "L" - "Hey, I didn't know this was 'Resident Evil'!?"

A rare but weird series of glitches where items stop responding, or
        general programming goes haywire.
Submissions by:
        VxNallxv (e-mail - additional glitch)
LukeOmac (gamefaqs board - additional glitch)
mannmurda (gamefaqs board - additional glitch)
NYR Fan  (gamefaqs board - additional glitch)
        Eze1129 (e-mail - additional glitch)

The first time I experienced something odd was once when the car quit
responding to steering controls of any sort when I started a free roaming
mission. Instead all I could do was accelerate or brake.

This then happened again on a replay check of mission 3 for me, except even
worse than the first time.

The second issue came from the fact as I drove the car, it stopped responding
to all steering controls and constantly accelerated at top speed by itself.
The roads became low textured as if they weren't loading, and when I finally
got stuck against a car I continued to have the car pushed ahead of me.

Eventually the map quit loading and the road stopped to white hell, where the
few other cars and pedestrians that were actually left would appear and
disappear from view. The cars eventually got stuck on a side wall just where
the white hell started. The only thing I could do was reset the console.

I am however not the only person to experience such a odd glitch, as
VxNallxv, wrote of experiences of a similar style glitch where things
stopped responding in the US version of the game.

"I've seen this happen on the streets only once, but it made me
reset my game. All traffic has stopped, you can't lean on walls,
cops don't get out of their cars (nor can you enter any).

So basically you're helpless, but nothing can hurt you anyway
since nothing moves but you and the pedestrians."

And here's another weird control glitch from LukeOmac, posted on the GameFAQ's
Getaway forum:

"I was on mission 12, aboad the sol vito or something, and as I
was driving down that street near the buckingham palace(Where
the tank is) Anyway, 3 cops cars come out of now where, and
then triads. Suddenly, the music skippd and my car was just
going around in circles and my control pad was vibrating non
stop and i couldn't control anthing."

And another from mannmurda:

"In the warehouse, with the dropping box and all that, i went
up a set of stairs, the one opposite to the guy shooting at
you with a shotgun. well i was about to go back down then i
stopped because the box was in front of me, so i tried to go
back up and i just froze, couldnt roll, draw weapon, move or
anything, i dont know how close i was to the end, but i have
to do it all over again."

And one more from NYR Fan:

"I had a glitch when Hammond was stopping a gang war at the
Yardie crackhouse where when I went in, it went to a far away
view. I could move around, but couldn't shoot. I tried rolling
into a closer view but must've bumped into things. I had to go
back to the main menu b/c there were no gangsters left to kill
        me."

And again... from Eze1129:

"when i started to play i noticed that i couldn't turn down any
streets and they were all white colored. you could see ppl in
the white but u couldn't turn or drive this was on all streets.

the cars themselves won't be as effected as they were if you were

Submissions by:
        Job (e-mail - original glitch)

Another classic glitch this one. Here's the original mail from Job detailing
the glitch.

"If you spot a car in the distance, then shoot it before it
draws too close (better still if its parked up at some lights).
When it bursts into flames just stand and wait for it - with
luck the flames will die down but the driver will not have died,
and will now drive their car as normal. If you steal it though
it all comes falls to bits the second you get in."

Sure enough, the results speak for themselves. Shoot at a car at a short
distance back from where you are on the road (try about 3 car lengths) until
it bursts into flames. You should note as it burns from this distance it won't
change to charcoal black, instead retaining it's original color.

If you move close at this time it will however catch alight properly and the
driver will burn to death inside the car. So wait until it's stopped burning.

Once it's stopped burning it will continue to smoke, but as long as the driver
is in the car it, he or she won't be dead, and the car will drive around.
Sometimes even all the panels show damage, the lights are smashed, doors
swing, and the tires will be gone and it will still drive.

If you try to enter the car it will immediately become burnt out as you get
into it.

Solution:
None. Just don't go shooting cars at a distance. ;)

Submissions by:
        Berriman  (e-mail - original glitch)

From Berriman's e-mail:

"On mission 7 when playing with Hammond, you have to ram the
telephone engineers van on Oxford street right? well i have
successfully done this many times but every time i do it, i
get into the real engineers van and as as i am driving to
the police station, the mission fail screen suddenly appears
telling me i have 'lost the van' even though i am driving
the van i have supposedly lost at the time.  This is very
frustrating as i can't get any further into this mission."

Now I have to call this a silly submission because it's not quite a glitch,
but kind of also is one at the same time. Berriman thought you needed to
take the van you knocked off the road and use it for the mission, and while
the fact was interesting - it made me question something. Why does it matter
what Van you use? Getting there in it stays the same, and no one sees it
even when it was smoking. You could argue there was something about the van
you collected which you need - but that fact is pointless seeing as the van
disappears anyway. They should have allowed you to use either van seeing as
they aren't any different. Oh well...

Solution:
Don't take the van you knocked off the road. Continue on in the van
        you're already using.

I'll let Sort006's word speak for themselves.

"On the Frank mission with the fire I saw Marks wife Suz laying
        dead out side thier home."

Sure enough, there she was. Not really a glitch, but sure as hell it's funny.

Let's just take a note of this. Since Suze got shot (which a woman saw - and
reported Mark as the killer), Mark made his way to Jolson's warehouse,
invaded it, got knocked out cold, was talked to for a while, was knocked out
cold again, went to the Republic, set the place on fire, and escaped...

Now assuming the minimum amount of time for all that, we're looking at a
couple of hours. Now given that Jolson gives us an update on what the Police
are doing (and looking for Mark that is) after that woman (and likely other
people too) saw it happen, realistically Mark's whole small alley of a street
should have been blocked off within minutes of the shooting happening.

But there Suze is, lying dead on the sidewalk, over 2 hours later, all by
herself. By now the coroner should have already organized her transportation
after the police were finished with the crime scene.

Just a _TINY_ overlook there by Team Soho I think... ;-)

Very, very funny. I tip my hat (or I should say, would tip my hat if I was
wearing one) to Sort006 for bringing this one to our attention. Good job.

        The disappearing gun caper.
Submissions by:
nks (gamefaqs board - original glitch)
Dustin Jones (e-mail - additional information)

This ones an interesting one brought up by nks on the GameFAQ's Getaway forum
a while back.

Load up Mission 11, The Prodigal Son with Mark. Skip the cutscene with R3 and
then press start and choose to exit the game. Once the menu is loaded, hit
start to bring up the selections and go choose the Free Roaming mode.

Once it's loaded step out of your car and press triangle so Mark equips his
weapon. But hey, wait a sec... there's nothing there. Mark's just holding
his finger there like it on the trigger. But you can't shoot at all.

Now if you hop into a car, Mark will threaten the driver with his finger (and
not in any rude way before you ask) and steal the car. However should you get
back out, you'll find you can't even pull out the invisible weapon anymore.
Mark has nothing on him.

The only way to remedy that is to find a police or gang car, smash into them,
get them to exit the car and run over them. When they're dead you can steal
their weapons and everything will be back to normal. However note if you hit
a gang, make sure you pick up the pistol before you pick up anything else.

Should you accidentally wreck your car before getting a pistol and after
already loosing the invisible gun then you're screwed too because Mark can't
steal cars without having his gun to draw.

The glitch that allows this to happen also seems to be the one which effects
Free Roaming time-to-time where certain areas are open after finishing/
exiting levels. That is the contents of game information is carried over to
the free roaming. Here it is to say "Mark has no gun" but you're supposed to
have one in the mode, hence the glitch.

Solution:
Run over or strangle cops/gang members then collect their weapons.
Don't exit Mission 11 without a gun then play Free Roaming mode.
        Die/restart.

Submissions by:
        ThickSmoke (e-mail - original glitch)

An interesting glitch was sent into me by ThickSmoke which explain the ability
to enter the Reptilian Gallery near Hyde Park in Free Roaming mode.

Once you're outside the Gallery, go up to the closed front door. If you
position mark on the right side of the door, and then press X, he'll lean
against the door. Now if you push right, Mark will pop into his stance like
he normally does around doors, except he'll do it through the post. Now the
aim here is to get the camera to sit correctly so that when you do this, it
shows the inside of the gallery.

The easiest way to set that one up is to, instead of lean against the door,
turn Mark against the pillar to the right of the door and lean against that
instead. Then push left so he sidesteps and pushes against the door. You
should then find that a push to the right will let you see into the gallery.

With this position held, press the X button and Mark will easily roll right
inside. Everything will be blacked out at first, so instead walk towards the
front doors, then turn around, and you'll find you're inside properly.

You can run around like a loon shooting stuff until you run out of ammo, and
can explore the gallery. The statue from the mission in here is still where
it is supposed to be too. But that's about it. To make things worse, once you
are inside, there is no way out, and you'll have exit the game to be able to
free roam again.

I want to know what that sound is you hear every now and then though. Sounds
like a train.

Solution:
        Exit game.

Flipped cars start moving by themselves.

This kinda happened when I was mucking around with some other glitch tests in
Free Roaming. The reason however had to do with a very stubborn guy named
Water Dragoon who claimed you couldn't flip your cars.

I took the Lotus7 to St. Pancras in King's Cross, and proceeded to constantly
roll cars up the stairs. However it was when I got out of an upside down car
that I noticed they were sliding around. Leaving it alone would have it either
slide into a buliding, or slide off the side of the stair area and into the
road.

All you need to do is from the left end of the stairs, at high speed cross
and hit the stairs and when you leap off the top at an angle, hold the
analog controller to the right. The car should roll easily and with luck land
on it's roof. Once it does keep trying to exit the car, and when you do, keep
an eye on the car. You'll notice it slowly trying to escape.

Solution:
Don't flip your car there... :p

I let Fitz do all the explaining on this one.

"...the mission where Mark is in the police station as a repair man.
The first time through, I decided to take down the station,
Terminator style.  After the officer shows me to the room which
needs repair, I snapped his neck. Upon exiting the room, every
officer in the station (at least those I could see) had their guns
drawn on me.  But...nobody was firing (yes, I know, this was
documented in "If only the real police were this nice").

After taking a few down, they started acting normal again.  So I
go along, taking everyone down as I trek through the station. When
I get upstairs, there's a room which I believe is on the left.
In the left corner of that room, there's an officer sitting in a
chair.  I took everyone else out, and then killed the guy in the
chair (who still sat there after being killed).  However, when I
swung the camera around, I noticed something odd.

He was blinking.  He was dead...but still blinking.  So I obviously
came to the conclusion that "THE DEAD LIVE!"  =P"

Thanks for that Fitz.

Parked cars don't turn charcoal black.
Submissions by:
        Victor Bao (e-mail - contribution)

I recieved an e-mail from Victor Bao stating a glitch which made the green
grass clippings in the back of the "Royal Park's HiJet" unburnt even after the
car as become a charcoal shell. While this is somewhat true (they maintain a
dark green color after the car is burnt - but it's more of an oversite by the
developers) it lead to the discovery of a more major glitch when I went to
burn the HiJet. One that works on any parked car in the game.

Once you've found any parked car (the lighter the color the better however -
which made the white HiJet a prime target) shoot at it's radiator constantly
until it catches on fire. When it does, sit there and wait. You should find
that while the car goes through the motions of being burnt by the fire, it's
color and look won't turn black - maintaining it's original look.

One further odd note to this is if you're looking at the car and pause the
game the car will go to get it's charcoal black look it should have had when
you burnt it. Oh and of course, if you get in the car first and then get out
and burn it, this glitch won't work.

Solution:
        Don't shoot parked cars. :p

Sometimes this double of Mark appears as McCormack and draws police
attention away from you and towards himself until you kill him
        yourself.
Probably one of the most infamous glitches currently noted in The
        Getaway.
Submissions by:
        Too many to even list.

It's a weird one this, and something I didn't believe until I saw it myself.
For a long time I'd heard reports of it, but it took a while before I ever
saw it.

Randomly, but reported enough to make it more than "rare", a ghost version of
Mark will appear either in the "Snow Hill" police station or on board the Sol
Vita. There are some random things about this too.

- He will attack police and police will attack him.
- If you attack him, he'll more than likely shoot back and can even kill you.

More often than not these ghost versions seem to go and replace the main bad
guy in the level - McCormack or Jake according to word around the net. So
sometimes you'll have to kill this doppleganger to continue the game.

Solution:
None currently. It's normally not too big a problem. If you die then
it might also be reset and you'll just be at the start of this section
        of the mission.
