* 3. Boss Battles *
* * * * * * * * *

1. Damp Hairball

Location: On your way back to Razril from Middleport the second time.
Requirements: After landing on Middleport the second time, a merchant stands
beside the Knight will request for your help to get rid of a monster that has
been attacking near the sea. Accept his request and sail back to Razril. The
boss will appear as one of the random enemy encounters.
HP: 204
Potch gained: 500
Items Dropped: ? Pot.

Sharpen all your party members' weapons and buy good equipment. If not,
sharpen weapons for Hero and Snowe. Buy equipment for everyone so you don't
have to heal every round. Make sure you are at least level 6 for this battle.
You may use Hero and Snowe's Friendship Attack or have them attack
individually. Friendship Attack deals slightly more damage than Hero and
Snowe's individual attack for me. You may also use Keneth's Lightning rune to
hasten the battle process.

Damp Hairball's major attack is when it uses water rune that damaged 25 HP for
all characters, so keep everyone's HP above 30. Have the weakest character use
medicine to heal members when needed(or else, just keep attacking) and focus
strongest characters to attack Damp Hairball.

2. Pirate Brandeau, Assassin

Location: After the naval battle against Pirate Brandeau.
HP: 210, 187
Potch gained: 450
Items Dropped: -

You have only two members for this fight, Hero and Gaiden Soldier, so Hero
must be well equipped for this fight. If you have equipped offensive runes on
Hero, go on and use it. If not, use physical attacks. Focus on attacking
Assassin first, as he has fewer HP and should go down in no time. Brandeau
will cast a fire magic that damaged 35 HP for one character, so keep their HP
above 40.

3. Colton, ???

Location: After resting in the Colton's ship and witness a few cutscenes.
HP: -
Potch gained: -
Items Dropped: -

This battle cannot be won, so don't waste any healing items.

4. Water Dragon

Location: After leaving from Troy's ship and engaged in one random battle.
HP: 1408
Potch gained: 1000
Items Dropped: Dragon Scale, Dragon's Bone.

This is perhaps the most difficult battle if your characters' levels are below
12. So keep leveling up until level 12 in Colton's ship.(After the battle, you
will be back on the ship. Turn around and you will see two Kooluk soldiers.
Engage them in battle and you will find that the soldiers always keep
respawning. Use this method to keep training.)

Water Dragon has two types of attacks, it has an attack that deals little
damage but inflicts sleep status, so it can be quite annoying if it causes two
or more characters to sleep. Another attack deals 45 damage on one character.
Keep all character's HP above 50.

Hero's Punishment rune, Eternal Ordeal, is very useful in this battle as it
deals 290-296 damage. Use the members' attacking runes if available to bring
it down quickly. Choose one character to do the healing(for me, I choose Paula
) and focus others to attack.

5. Boss Crab, Wild Crab x 2(first part of battle), Wild Crab x 6(second part
of battle)

Location: Deserted Island. After the cutscenes about a mermaid telling you
that Chiepoo is in danger, go to the dense forest.
HP: 1538, 90
Potch gained: 3280
Items Dropped: Crab Bun, Seashell x 2, Shell.

For the first part of the battle, don't use any magic. Simply take out the
wild crabs using physical attacks. Keep using physical attacks on the Boss
Crab until you are given an option to use the Punishment Rune. Use it and now
the real battle begins.

The real battle consists of Boss Crab and four more wild crabs. Same as the
beginning, eliminate the wild crabs first using physical attacks and unleash
powerful magic on Boss Crab. Hero's Eternal Ordeal is effective in this
battle; dealing 380-400 damage per round. So if you are using Hero's rune
frequently , do remember to keep his HP high. Boss Crab has two types of
attack; it has an attack that damages 46-55 HP to one ally and another attack
that damage 50 HP to all characters. So keep everyone's HP above 60 and Hero's
HP above 80 if you are using Hero's rune. Focus other characters to either
attack or heal when needed.

6. Killer Ray x 2

Location: After leaving Deserted Island and engage two random battles.
HP: 1292
Potch gained: 1600
Items Dropped: Water Rune Piece, Jizo clock, Mega medicine.

The Killer Rays' major attack is when the two of them attack simultaneously,
dealing 70 HP damage to all allies. Therefore, it's very important to take one
killer ray out.  Their own individual attack, however, deals 50 HP to one
character. Hero's Eternal Ordeal deals more damage than Double Edged Sword to
one enemy, so you may want to use Eternal Ordeal to settle one killer ray
quickly. Once one killer ray is down, the other is very easy to handle. The
killer ray may also heal itself for 47 HP, but it does not pose much threat.
Keep everyone's HP above 80 when there are two killer rays and above 60 HP
when one killer ray is left.

7. Guard (Part 1)

Location: Obel Ruins, appears just before exiting the ruins.
HP: 1665
Potch gained: 1000
Items Dropped: Platinum.

You need to be well prepared for this fight. The Guard has high defense and
attack power, so you might want to sharpen your weapons and buy good armour in
Obel first. It has an attack that damages 60-73 HP for all and another attack
that damages 79 HP for one character. Equip someone with an Earth rune so you
can use the Clay Guardian to minimise damage received. By now, you should have
about 200+ HP, so keep your HP above 100. You may need to use mega medicine
rather than medicine because it restores more HP. Keep an eye on Hero's HP if
you are going to use his rune, as the Eternal Ordeal spell take 40-49 HP away
from Hero, so plan your healing wisely. Since you are going to fight him
twice, it's best if you use just a couple of spells and leave the most
powerful spells for later battle. If physical attacks aren't hurting much, you
may also use any offensive rune you have equipped on your characters.

8. Guard (Part 2)

Location: Obel Ruins, appears when you are about to leave the area after a
conversation with Rikie.
HP: 2062
Potch gained: 1500
Items Dropped: Iron Hammer, Diamond.

If you have used up too much magic in the previous battle, it's a good idea to
consume the mushrooms in order to replenish your magic power for a tougher
Guard in this battle. Your attack and magic powers should have increased much
more now, so go ahead and unleash all your powerful rune spells. The Guard has
the same types of attacks, except that it deals more damage now; it has an
attack that damages 65-71 HP for all and another attack that damages 85 HP for
one. Use mega medicine to restore when necessary and keep everyone's HP about
110 HP. Hero's Eternal Ordeal is a must as it deals quite a lot of damage than
other rune spells, but keep an eye on Hero's HP. With all the powerful spells
unleashed on this Guard, it should be gone quickly.

9. Akagi, Mizuki

Location: Obel. Appears on your way to the quarters after Oleg joined your
party.
HP: 635, 653
Potch gained: 940
Items Dropped: -

Fighting Akagi and Mizuki is a breeze compared to Guard. Hitting them with
physical attack should suffice, but if you want to finish them quickly, use
Hero's Eternal Ordeal and any other powerful runes. Akagi deals 56 HP damage
to one character and Mizuki deals 74 damage to one. Keep everyone's HP above
100.

10. Horned Behemoth

Location: Hermitage Island. Appears on your way to the cave.
HP: 878
Potch gained: 3000
Items Dropped: Horn.

Hero engaged in this battle alone, so equip him with good armor and sharpen
his weapon. Hero's HP should be around 300+ at level 40. The Behemoth damages
33-72 HP, so you need not worry about restoring your health. Use Eternal
Ordeal for 2-3 times and it should be gone for good.

11. Moving Isle, Tentacle x 4

Location: Near Middleport. Appears on your way to regain Middleport.
HP: 3520, 588
Potch gained: 11,200
Items Dropped: Ocean Rune Piece, Silk.

It may be one of the hardest boss battles. Moving Isle has a whopping high HP
and four tentacles with 588 HP each. In this battle, only long-ranged weapons
and rune magic can hurt this one. So choose an ally that is a strong magic
caster like Jeane or Viki, long-ranged weapon user like Sigurd and most
importantly, bring a healer in; Viki or Sigurd(both are strong in water
magic). Buy good equipment for everyone and sharpen all weapons for this long
fight.

Moving Isle has two types of attacks; it sprays ink that causes 39 HP damage
and sleep status to one character. Another attack is it damages 60-80 HP for
all. The tentacle damages 50 HP to one character. Hero should defend until all
the tentacles are down. The Double Edged Sword deals little damage to them so
let Viki, Sigurd, Lo Hak or Jeane eliminate them first. Once all tentacles are
down, use Hero's Eternal Ordeal on Moving Isle. If you do not have any magic
left, you may use the the mushrooms to restore your magic and unleash those
spells on Moving Isle. The healer should cast Healing Rain(or Kindness Drops
if you ran out off Healing Rain) to restore everyone's HP and keep their HP
above 120.

12. Graham Cray

Location: Fort El-Eal. Fourth floor of fort, Control Room.
HP: 4078
Potch gained: 1000
Items Dropped: -

Graham Cray isn't difficult if you sharpen the weapons to the maximum and buy
good equipment.(best equipment should be left for Hero's party) The party I
have are Viki at level 55, Millay at level 53, Helmut and level 53 and Ted at
level 45. Viki equipped with Ancient Vestment, casts fire magic and Ted uses
his Soul Eater Rune. Helmut and Millay use physical attacks. Graham attacks
all for 57-93 HP damage and 245 HP damage to one. He often attacks all members
instead of one, but if you are worried, keep all party members HP above 260.
Graham might cast a protective barrier on him at the start of the battle, this
barrier halves all damage received; physical and magic attacks. So use
physical attacks, until once the barrier is gone, unleash all powerful attacks
on Graham.(Ted's Judgement is very useful; dealing 1309 HP damage) He will
occasionally casts the barrier after the previous one has been worn off, so
finish him quickly before he had a chance to cast it.

13. Giant Tree, Seed of Light x 2

Location: Fort El-Eal. The highest floor of the fort.
HP: 13,478, 3731
Potch gained: 750
Items Dropped: -

The final boss of Suikoden IV. The boss has high defense, so you need to use
either strong magic combo or attack combo to defeat it. First eliminate the
seeds, they will regenerate after you killed them, but keeping them out of
your way makes your healers' job much easier. I am sure many fans will notice
this final boss, has some similarities to the final boss of Suikoden III, by
looking at the colours of the leaves.

The colours that it might change into are:

Light blue -   Regenerates one seed, does not attack during this form.
Light green -  90-95 HP damage to one.
Dark blue -    45-71 HP damage and poison status damage to all.
Dark green -   Inflicts sleep status, sometimes attacks 158-196 damage to all.
Orange -       Most devastating attack, dealing 269-275 HP damage to all if
              undefend. All members must defend.
White/Silver - Most devastating attack, dealing 230-390 HP damage to all if
              undefend. All members must defend.
Yellow/Gold -  Increasing the beam on top of its head, does not attack during
              this form.

The battle can be very easy or difficult depends on how much you levelled up
your characters. My party, Hero at level 90, Snowe, Sigurd and Hervey at level
89, with 400 HP and above. Hero and Snowe perform True Friends Attack using
two Power Rings, Killer Rune equipped and weapons sharpen at maximum level for
each member, dealing 2308 damage. Sigurd and Hervey perform Pirate Attack,
with no Power Rings equipped, deals 991 damage. Keep everyone's HP above 250.
Since this is the last boss fight, go ahead and use the most powerful runes
and use the mushrooms when needed. If you want to keep the mushrooms for the
next game, focus all your attacks via combo attacks or physical attacks. The
seeds may heal Giant Tree occasionally for 251 HP, but it shouldn't pose much
problem. Focus all your powerful attacks and it will be defeated soon.

* 4. Duel Battles *
* * * * * * * * *

There are three commands to choose: Attack, Defense and Special Attack. You
can choose your Attack, Defense or Special Attack to be either full power or
normal power. Once you select the full power option, you are not able to
change your selection for that whole duel battle only.

When an enemy attacks, use special attack. When it defense, choose to attack.
When it uses special attack, counter it by defending.(It is easy to guess what
moves the enemy will choose by listening to the tone of his voice.)

1. Glen
- Now it's my turn! - Glen will attack.
- Are you ready for me? - Glen will attack.
- Pay close attention to my swordsmanship. - Glen will attack.
- Let's see you make a move. - Glen will guard.
- Let's see how well you can wield that sword. - Glen will guard.
- Charge at me and don't hold anything back - Glen will guard.
- My next move will settle this, once and for all! - Glen will use special
  attack.
- Prepare to get beaten to a pulp. - Glen will use special attack.

2. Pirate Brandeau
- I guess I can play a little. - Brandeau will attack.
- Don't get cocky, boy! - Brandeau will attack.
- Victory is mine... - Brandeau will attack.
- Your attacks are futile...Don't you realize that? - Brandeau will guard.
- Hah, child's play! Allow me to humor you. - Brandeau will guard.
- I will settle this... - Brandeau will use special attack.
- I'll kill you! - Brandeau will use special attack.

3. Lino En Kuldes
- All right, let's get right down to it. - Lino will attack.
- Maybe a little nudge to wake you up? - Lino will attack.
- It's my turn next. - Lino will attack.
- Come on! Let's see what you've got. - Lino will guard.
- I think I'll save my energy a little. - Lino will guard.
- Guess I'll start getting serious now... - Lino will use special attack.
- Well, I guess I'll scare you a bit! - Lino will use special attack.
- Hehe...Better be prepared for the next move... - Lino will use special
  attack.

4. Troy
- Then...here I go. - Troy will attack.
- Yield to my sword... - Troy will attack.
- Here I go. - Troy will attack.
- ...... - Troy will guard.
- Humph... - Troy will guard.
- Come on! Let's see what you have got. - Troy will guard.
- Prepare yourself. - Troy will use special attack.
- I'll settle this with the next move. - Troy will use special attack.
- Sorry...but I will take your life with one more move. - Troy will use
  special attack.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *
* 5. Boss Battles(Optional) *
* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

1. Lo Fong, Lo Hak, Lo Seng

Location: Mordo Island.
Requirements: After acquiring Golden Seal from Lino En Kuldes, go to Mordo
Island and use the hot spring there. Lo Fong, Lo Hak and Lo Seng will engage
you in battle after you chose not to pay 10,000 potch. (The two choices
prompted will still engage you in battle with the trio.)
HP: 1136, 1198, 1539
Potch gained: 15,000
Items Dropped: -

Lo Fong has the fewest HP of all, Lo Hak is the second highest HP of the trio
and Lo Seng has the highest HP. Lo Fong damages 27 HP, Lo Hak damages 25-27 HP
and Lo Seng damages 38-40 HP for one character. Since Lo Fong has the lowest
HP, take her out first, followed by Lo Hak and Lo Seng. Lo Seng deals more
damage than the others so you need to keep an eye on your party's HP. After Lo
Fong and Lo Hak are taken care of, focus all your strongest spells on Lo Seng.

2. Gau, Demon Wolf x 4

Location: Hermitage Island.
Requirements: After acquiring Golden Seal from Lino En Kuldes, go to forest
area of Hermitage Island. Gau will appear as one of the random encounters.
HP: 2114, 316
Potch gained: 2700
Items Dropped: -

Choose a magic that eliminates all Demon Wolfs at once(for me, I used Viki's
Blinking Rune, "Set!"), then focus on Gau. Gau inflicts 3 hits (83-125 damage)
on one ally, so keep everyone's HP above 150. He has quite a lot of HP, so it
may take some time to defeat him. Use Eternal Ordeal and any powerful rune
magic on him and heal occasionally.

3. Fog Ship Guide

Location: Ghost Ship.
Requirements: After recruiting 70+ characters, go to the War Room. After the
cutscene, follow the path straight. After the conversation between Fog Ship
Guide and Ted, Fog Ship Guide will challenge you to a fight.
HP: 7049
Potch gained: 8000
Items Dropped: Silk, Diamond

This battle may be difficult if you did not sharpen weapon and buy good armor
for Lino. The party consists of Hero, Lino, a character of your choice and Ted
who join in later. It's a good idea to choose a healer for this tedious and
frustrating battle. The most frustrating part is Fog Ship Guide loves to drain
one character's HP for 145-175, especially in the beginning of the battle.
When it loses about half of his health, it drains occasionally. Luckily, Ted
has a water rune that he can restore one ally's HP. Hit Fog Ship Guide with
Eternal Ordeal, physical attack and all your strongest spells so he will not
drain your party members' HP too often. Fog Ship Guide has another attack that
hits 83-100 HP for all. It's best if you keep everyone's HP close to their
maximum HP as Fog Ship Guide drains almost half of their maximum HP.

4. Maxine(Na Nal Town Square)

Location: Na Nal Island
Requirements: After regain Razril, go to Na Nal Town Square to find a white
haired woman dressed in dark purple-red clothing. Speak to her to engage in
battle.
HP: 1997
Potch gained: 1000
Items Dropped: -

Maxine does not cast powerful spells in this battle. She casts Wind of Sleep
and attacks physically to one character for 45 HP damage. Use Eternal Ordeal,
powerful rune magic or attack physically. She should go down rather quick.

5. Maxine(Nay Island Stonecutter Field)

Location: Nay Island
Requirements: After regaining Razril and beaten Maxine previously in Na Nal
Island Town Square, go to Nay Island Stonecutter Field to find her near a tree
on the left. Speak to her to engage in battle.
HP: 2437
Potch gained: 2000
Items Dropped: -

Maxine has higher HP than before and she casts powerful wind magic like
Shining Wind and Funeral Wind this time. Same as the previous battle, unleash
all powerful attacks and rune magic on her and keep everyone's HP close to
maximum. You may also want to cast Earth Rune, Clay Guardian on your party to
increase their defensive.

6. Angel Hairball

Location: Various; Obel Ruins, Iluya Island and Fort El-Eal.
Requirements: Hidden in some treasure chest.
HP: 3237
Potch gained: 10,000
Items Dropped: Stone of speed

Use combo magic, Thunder God, at the first round. Cast powerful strong spells
every round and heal when necessary. Once the Angel Hairball loses about half
of its HP, it might cast high level lightning spell, Heavenly Thunder, that
instantly knocked out one ally. But don't worry about the experience points as
the points given are not much if your party is at level 60+.

If you have True Friends Attack, cast Silent Lake to prevent Angel Hairball
casting any spells and perform the combo attack every round, the other two
characters should defend or heal using items if needed.

7. Land Dragon

Location: Middleport
Requirements: After speaking to Pablo regarding a powerful warlock who hid
himself under at basement at Empty House, go to the Back Road in Middleport
and into Empty House. Choose the "24 potch" option and you will be landed at
the basement. Explore the basement and before you get to meet Warlock, you
have to fight the Land Dragon.
HP: 5062
Potch gained: 8000
Items Dropped: Dragon Scale.

Choose a strong party that has strong combo magic like Flame Array (lightning
+ fire) or Thunder God (lightning + water), high combo attack power like Hero
and Snowe's True Friends Attack. Have a healer in the party to heal
occassionally. Land Dragon damages 127-151 HP to one character and 80-98 HP
damage to all. It also inflicts sleep status too. Watch out for your party's
HP and keep their HP above 220 as Land Dragon tends to attack one character
almost every round.

8. Killer Golem

Location: Kingdom of Obel
Requirements: After defeated the Guard twice at the Obel Ruins, Killer Golem
will appear at the same location later in the game.
HP: 12,629
Potch gained: 30,000
Items Dropped: Diamond, Platinum.

This is the toughest optional boss battle in this game. Killer Golem has the
same attacks as the Guard but deals more damage this time. It has an attack
that damages 87 HP to one character and another attack (it shoots its hand as
a rocket) that deals 295-297 damage to one character. It also attacks all
members for 158-196 damage. It is important to have a good party for this one,
(my party members are Hero at level 56, Snowe at level 55, Sigurd at level 55
and Hervey at level 51) and preferably, with a strong combo attack party like
Hero and Snowe True Friends Attack, is useful in this long battle. Have a
strong healer, Sigurd, to heal when needed. You may want to include a person
who is strong in Earth Rune and cast Clay Guardian to increase their defenses.
Buy good equipment and sharpened their weapons to the maximum, if you want to
increase their attack powers, buy Power Rings, available in Razril Equipment
Shop for 20,000 potch each, equip your strong attackers with the Fury Rune, or
keep levelling up your characters to 470 HP. Hero and Snowe should be doing
2000+ damage with the True Friends Attack, with the Fury Rune and three Power
Rings equipped each on the duo. If Power Rings are too costly, buy at least
two or three and equipped two on Snowe and one for Hero (I found that Snowe
deals more damage than Hero). Sigurd and Hervey can perform the Pirate Attack
or attack individually. Be sure to keep everyone's HP above 300 HP, so the
healer's job will be easy.

9. Ancient Crab
Location: Deserted Island.
Requirements: After defeated the Boss Crab and wild crabs in the dense forest,
Ancient Crab will appear at the hill(beyond the dense forest) later in the
game.
HP: 9500
Potch gained: 25,000
Items Dropped: Fire Rune Piece.

If you have defeated Killer Golem, then fighting Ancient Crab should have no
problem. It damages 193-200 HP to each character and also hits 78-117 HP
damage to all.(I find that Ancient Crab tend to attack all members every
round.) Select a strong party where each character is at level 68 to 70.
Perform Hero and Snowe's True Friends Attack and have the other two characters
perform either combo attack, use physical or strong rune magic attack. Heal
when necessary.

bryon15kennedy's strategy:
The boss has two attacks, one hits all characters for 80 to 130 hp or hits one
for 200+ damage depending on what the characters' defenses are. My team
consists of the Hero, Snow, Ted and one other person at about level 45 or
higher. My tactics are to hit it with rush command right away, then I would
use the most powerful individual magic each character has or use strong combo
magic. Once done that, I use the Hero and Snow to do the True Friends Attack
while Ted and the other person concentrate on healing and use physical attack
