1. INTRODUCTION
This is an FAQ for Nel Zelpher, a character in the RPG Star Ocean: Till the
End of Time. It may seem unusual to write an FAQ for ONE character - after
all, SO3 is an RPG, and not a fighting game - but SO3's unique battle system
makes it appropriate. Since you're only controlling one character at a given
time, and since SO3's very-interactive battle system makes space control,
dodging, hit-and-run, cancelling, combos and such important issues, a
fighting-game-like analysis of characters becomes necessary. (This ain't
no turn-based Final Fantasy.)
The other reason for this FAQ is more selfish, and that of course, is that
I love Nel. She's definitely my favorite video game character to come around
for a looooooooooong time, and so this FAQ is not only a guide to playing
her, but also an homage to her.
2. OVERVIEW
Nel's vital stats from the Final Edition guide:
Name: Nel Zelpher
Sex: Female
Age: 23
Height: 171 cm
Weight: 51 kg
Race: Elicoor
Weapons: Daggers and Sejutsu (Heraldry-like magic)
First-person pronoun: Watashi
Voice Actress: Asakawa Yuu
Nel first joins your party very early, as soon as you land on Elicoor 3.
She's therefore the third party member you get (not counting Sophia or
Souffle since they don't stick around very long) after Fate and Cliff.
She'll continue to be with your party for a very long time until you leave
for the Diplo.
To recruit her permanently, you either have to have her rescue at the
Cirlsour Runis event, or return to Elicoor 3 later and pick her up at
Sealand Castle. For the former, you must not trigger the Roger event or
the Arbel event; both of these events happen between the time Arbel
joins your party and the time you defeat Crosel. The Roger event is
triggered by entering the middle island at Sir Felious, then helping
out Roger; the Arbel event is triggered by sleeping at the Inn in Peterny,
then telling Arbel that you don't really hate him. If you do not trigger
either event, Nel will join you permanently at Cirlsour Ruins. Barring
this, you can always pick up either Roger or Arbel as your fifth
character, turn down Souffle as your sixth, then visit Nel at Sealand,
telling her that you can't take things easily.
When Nel first joins you, she's level 3, the same as Cliff when he first
joins. She has the following stats with nothing equipped:
HP 500
MP 260
ATK 17
DEF 11
AGL 50
HIT 46
INT 36
CP 5
If you have the time and patience to take her to max level (255), she'll
have the following stats with nothing equipped:
HP 48271
MP 7949
ATK 1154
DEF 397
AGL 1317
HIT 1423
INT 662
In general Nel is a very balanced character; however both her INT and AGL
are top-class, along with relatively high MP. This makes her a good
support character.
Finally, the skills Nel learns as she levels up:
Start: Shisentou
Level 5: HP Damage Up
Level 6: Aerial
Level 8: Critical
Level 10: Kagebarai
Level 13: Stun
Level 15: Touga
Level 16: Berserk
Level 17: First Aid
Level 18: Critical HP
Level 19: Charge
Level 20: Fuka
Level 22: Retro Heal
Level 25: Fuujin
Level 26: Taunt
Level 28: MP Damage Up
Level 30: Kokuyousen
Level 32: Fear
Level 35: Enemy Search
Level 40: Raikouha
Guardless
Level 50: Kyoumensatsu
3. NEL'S EQUIPMENT
Nel uses paired short swords as her weapon of choice. Here is a list of
her weapons with their statistics and how to get them.
Baselard
Obtained: Default
ATK 15 HIT 15
Nel's starting weapon.
Falchion
Obtained: Shop (Cirlsour, 45 Fol)
ATK 22 HIT 0
Your first upgrade, it has no HIT, but higher ATK than the Baselard, so
might as well go for it.
Rounsel Dagger
Obtained: Item Creation (Nel, Gratz; Base Cost 1230)
ATK 40 DEF 20 HIT 20 AGL 20
Unique among Nel's weapons in that it raises DEF/AGL. However, you won't
be able to make it until better weapons appear.
Middle Dagger
Obtained: Shop (Alias, 110 Fol)
ATK 50 HIT 10
An upgrade once you reach Alias.
Assassin Dagger
Obtained: Item Creation (Nel, Gratz; Base Cost 2480)
ATK 95 HIT 25
A reasonably powerful weapon, however by the time you can create it, you
can already get the Silver Dagger.
Silver Dagger
Obtained: Shop (Peterny, 660 Fol)
ATK 100 HIT 20
Basic weapon in Peterny.
Flare Baselard
Obtained: Item Creation (Nel, Gratz, Raias; Base Cost 30550)
ATK 130 HIT 30
Factors: Emits Fire When Attacking
The fireball does fire-elemental damage and does just as much damage as a
normal attack. Great for enemies weak against Fire; if you start Item
Creation right away, it's possible to create this for your use before you
can get a better weapon.
Arcwind
Obtained: Item Creation (Nel, Gast, Boyd; Base Cost 33000)
ATK 170 HIT 40
Factors: Emits Long Range Wave When Attacking
The Long Range Wave is wind-elemental and does just as much damage as a
normal attack. The Long Range Wave is a unique factor of this weapon;
you can try Synthesizing it onto other weapons for increased effect.
Osprey Dagger
Obtained: Shop (Airyglyph, 15100 Fol)
ATK 200 HIT 30
Very expensive; you should not buy it, either, because a better weapon is
available for free almost immediately.
Goshintou "Ryuusen"
Obtained: Private Action
ATK 220 HIT 50
Factors: Emits Ice When Attacking
ATK +20 (1)
After Arbel joins your party, head to Cirlsour and to Walther's Mansion for
a PA in which you overhear Nel talking with Walther. At the end of the PA,
she receives this weapon, which was used by her father Neibel. Although
watching the PA will lower Nel's opinion of you slightly, it's well worth it
for this weapon. It emits three shards of ice sometimes, each of which does
half the damage of a normal attack, and it can be refined in Item Creation
to add more ATK +20s, which means you can actually raise this weapon's
ATK to 360.
Dragon Edge
Obtained: Item Creation (Gast, Boyd; Base Cost 35000)
ATK 380 HIT 45
A great weapon; however it requires some very good Creators to make. You'll
probably end up buying a better weapon soon enough, so you might not want to
bother.
Ceramic Dagger
Obtained: Shop (Moonbase, 32000 Fol)
ATK 380 HIT 50
A weapon you can pick up in the Moonbase. Rather expensive.
Laser Weapon
Obtained: Shop (Gemity, 42500 Fol)
ATK 600 HIT 45
A non-Nel-specific weapon that is nevertheless quite good.
Ice Falchion
Obtained: Shop (Sealand, 61500 Fol)
ATK 720 HIT 95
Factors: Emits Ice When Attacking
Like the Goshintou "Ryuusen", this emits ice; however each ice shard only
does 1/4th the damage of a normal attack. Nevertheless, this is one of
Nel's better weapons, though watch out for enemies strong against water-
elemental.
Ice Coffin
Obtained: Item Creation (Gast, Boyd; Base Cost 68000)
ATK 880 HIT 45
Factors: Water-Elemental Attack
Doesn't emit ice shards, but rather the attack itself is water-elemental.
Needs to be created by a very good Blacksmith Creator; you might end up
missing it, but it's the best weapon Nel can get before fighting Lucifer.
Elemental Edge
Obtained: Treasure Chest (Cave of Trials Floor 2)
ATK 1500 HIT 55
Factors: ATK +200 (1)
Found early in the Cave of Trials, this is an excellent weapon which can
be Refined to add more ATK +200s (therefore the max ATK is 3100).
Death Bringer
Obtained: Dropped (Revenge-seeking Shelby, Sphere 211 Floor 169)
ATK 2000 HIT 60
Factors: You feel cursed (1) (Drops max HP by 20%)
You have a bad feeling (1) (Drops max MP by 20%)
My Guts...! (1) (Guts consumption x3-4)
Chance of Breaking 20% (1)
Chance of Breaking 20% (1)
ATK +1000 (1)
Nel's Ultimate weapon. All of the negative effects can be removed by
Refining, and the ATK +1000s will be cloned as well. Use this as a base
and add beneficial factors like ATK/DEF +30% to make Nel a real monster
on the battlefield.
Armor-wise, Nel equips light armor (like Maria and Arbel); luckily she can
also equip the Valkyrie Garb, which is the best armor in the game.
4. NEL'S ATTACKS/BATTLE SKILLS
"105%" means that on average the attack will do approximately (Character's
ATK value - Enemy's DEF value) x 105% in HP damage. This value is modified
by elemental strengths and weaknesses as well as other factors (whether your
character is Angered, has had Growth cast on them, and so on).
Nel's attacks link in the following pattern:
LONG Weak Strong
| |
MIDDLE | Weak----------------- |
| | | |
SHORT Bat. Skill Weak Special->Weak-->Strong Chain Special
Weak Attack (Short Range)
105% HPx4; 10 Guts
Nel spins upwards. Rather strong for a weak attack, if you can get all 4 hits
to hit; however short enemies will not be hit by all of the hits. You can hit
the strong attack button afterwards to link into another attack. The last
spin kick knocks the opponent down.
Weak Attack (Short Range Special)
105% HP + 10% MP; 8 Guts
This attack triggers if 3 or more enemies surround Nel; she jumps into the
air a little and throws a bomb downwards. This attacks a wide range of
enemies and adds MP damage, as well as damages Guts; it's a good attack
but by its very nature it's a little dangerous to pull off.
Weak Attack (Middle-Long Range)
105% HP; 8, 5 Guts
Nel dashes in for a quick slash. The attack looks the same, but based
on whether you are at middle or long range the amount of Guts consumed
differs. The startup speed is very fast; however the recovery is rather
long for a weak attack, so you should always cancel into a battle skill.
Has a chance of damaging Guts.
Strong Attack (Short Range)
180% HP; 12 Guts
Nel jumps into the air and homes in on the opponent in a cannonball attack.
You can hit the attack button again to link to the Chain Special. Since it
homes, this is a great attack to use.
Strong Attack (Long Range)
210% HP; 12 Guts
Visually looks exactly the same as the Short Range version. It does more
damage; you can still link to the Chain Special afterwards.
Strong Attack (Chain Special)
105% HP; 5 Guts
After connecting with a strong attack (either short or long range), if there
is another enemy near Nel this attack will trigger. It counts as a weak
attack even though it uses the strong attack button, so it can be
Protected against.
Charge
4 CP
Learned: Level 19
Weak: 160% HP; 20 HP, 10 Guts
Strong: 240% HP; 400 HP, 42 Guts
A mediocre Charge attack. Probably not worth using, since by the time you
learn it you'll already have some excellent battle skills.
Aerial
2 CP
Learned: Level 6
Weak: 160% HPx7; 10 HP, 10 Guts
Strong: 240% HPx7; 100 HP, 42 Guts
An extremely good Aerial attack; however normal sized enemies will only
be hit 1-3 times, and only the biggest enemies will get hit with all 7.
Nevertheless, if all those hits hit, this is the strongest Aerial in the
game. Since you learn it so early, you'll have a wide variety of chances
to use it; it's especially great against flying dragons and other flying,
large enemies.
Shisentou
4 CP
Learned: Beginning
Weak: 43-56% HPx4; 5 HP, 20 Guts
Strong: 56-73% HPx4; 300 HP, 62 Guts
Nel sends an energy wave forward. It runs along the ground so it's hard
to hit airborne enemies with this. Doesn't have much in the way of range,
so once you get Kagebarai you won't be using this much.
Kagebarai
2 CP
Learned: Level 10
Weak: (77-100% HP + 11-14% MP)x3; 5 HP, 10 Guts
Strong: (115-148% HP + 16-21% MP)x3; 300 HP, 52 Guts
Nel sends a crescent-shaped wave along the ground, hitting multiple
enemies for good HP and MP damage. This is even lower than Shisentou,
so it will miss flying enemies. However, since it has MP damage, and hits
a wide circular range, it's infinitely more useful than Shisentou.
Touga
4 CP
Learned: Level 15
Weak: 110-142% HPx3; 30 HP, 40 Guts
Strong: 142-183% HPx3; 400 HP, 62 Guts
Nel creates a series of water-elemental shards that she sends at the
opponent. It has a small chance of freezing the enemy, making this
an extremely good battle skill. The skill is extremely fast, making it
better than the other skills that can freeze (Souffle's Frozen Dagger
and Sophia's Deep Freeze). The best use for it is to stick it as a
long range attack and snipe at the enemies while your teammates take
care of them.
Fuka
2 CP
Learned: Level 20
Weak: (33-43% HP + 16-21% MP)x3; 10 HP, 10 Guts
Strong: (39-50% HP + 19-24% MP)x3; 300 HP, 52 Guts
Nel sends a poison cloud forward. It's slow, but it has a chance to
poison the enemy, and it does MP damage as well as HP. Still, you
probably won't use this too much. On the other hand, poison damage
is based on percentage of Max HP, and enemies have no way of curing
themselves (they don't have Antidote or Aquaberries...), so if you're
lucky enough to poison an enemy with high HP, this skill can be great
for whittling them down. It's too bad most of the really top-class
enemies are immune to poison (and all status effects, for that matter).
Fuujin
3 CP
Learned: Level 25
Weak: 110% HPxn; 80 HP, 30 Guts
Strong: 33% HPxn; 600 HP, 72 Guts
This creates a whirlwind around Nel that lasts for 3 seconds at first
but at max proficiency stays for 8 seconds. While active, Nel can move
around, and any enemies that get close will be hit by the whirlwind. It's
easy to get 50+ hits with this skill alone. The weak version does a lot
more damage than the strong version, unusally, but it is susceptible to
Protect. While the whirlwind is attack, Nel can use basic attacks, so she
can run up to an enemy and slash them while the whirlwind is hitting them;
starting another battle skill, however, will cancel the whirlwind.
Kokuyousen
4 CP
Learned: Level 30
Weak: (22-28% HP + 12-16% MP)x7; 40 HP, 30 Guts
Strong: (33-42% HP + 18-24% MP)x7; 800 HP, 72 Guts
The best battle skill in the game. Nel sends out her large sword as a
large black disc boomerang, which hits the opponent for not-so-great
HP damage but very respectable MP damage. Small enemies will only be hit
up to 4 times. In the mid-game, this will be the skill you use most often.
The disc homes in on Nel's location, so after firing it you can move Nel
to 'guide' the disc. Utilizing most enemy's low MP, this skill makes many
battles a lot easier. Best used at long range.
Raikouha
4 CP
Learned: Level 40
Weak: 33-43% HPxn; 30 HP, 20 Guts
Strong: 39-51% HPxn; 900 HP, 62 Guts
Nel sends a wind (thunder)-elemental ray out that lasts from 3-6 seconds,
depending on proficiency. The amount of damage is not spectacular, though
if the opponent is weak against wind this can be a fairly good attack.
Kyoumensatsu
8 CP
Learned: Level 50
Weak: 66-86% HPx10; 100 HP, 40 Guts
Strong: 99-129% HPx10; 900 HP, 82 Guts
Nel attacks the opponent in a series of slashes; the "Mirror Slice" famous
from other Star Ocean games. Even though the animation has lightning and
fire, this attack counts as non-elemental. Great for combos. Knocks the
opponent down at the end.
Uraouka Sakkou
6 CP
Learned: From book (Cave of Trials, Floor 5)
Weak: 66-86% HPx18; 200 HP, 25 Guts
Strong: 99-129% HPx18; 950 HP, 67 Guts
Like a pumped-up version of Kyoumensatsu, the final purple hurricane can
hit a large area of enemies. One of the best skills in the game in terms
of sheer damage. Since the startup is an extremely fast dash, you can in
fact set this at long range and just rely on Nel's fast dash to close in
on the enemy.
Fuujin Seiraiha
8 CP
Learned: From book (Sphere 211, Floor 169)
Weak: (55-71% HP + 13-17% MP)xn; 160 HP, 40 Guts
Strong: (71-92% HP + 17-22% MP)xn; 900 HP, 95 Guts
Nel floats into the air, surrounded by electricity, then sends out a large
wind-elemental ray that continues for as long as you hold down the attack
button (consumes an additional 2/4 Guts per tick). Good against those
weak against wind. However the startup is rather slow (like almost all of
the final Battle Skills), so to use it effectively you'll have to fire it
at an enemy already preoccupied by your allies; using it in one-on-one
combat is not going to help you any.
5. BATTLE STRATEGIES
Support Skills
First, the skills that Nel learns naturally:
HP Damage Up -- Isn't bad at first. Stick it on Long Range Strong for the
maximum effect, as that is Nel's most damage move. (Or, you can try
sticking it on Short Range Weak and attempt to get the close-range 4-hit
weak attack every time). Later however, you'll want to focus more on
skills.
Critical -- Has a chance of increasing HP/MP damage for whatever attack it
is bound to. Again, Long Range Strong is probably the best attack to bind
it to.
Stun -- Can be extremely useful. Since the chance is calculated per hit,
binding it to Short Range Weak will give you the highest chance of
Stunning the opponent if you go for the 4-hit weak attack.
First Aid -- Can be good in a pinch, but it's hard to waste a slot on it.
Critical HP -- Allows all attacks to have a chance of causing 30% more
damage. However, since Nel's base ATK is not terribly high in the first
place, this skill isn't all that useful for her.
Retro Heal -- Is useful in the beginning of the game, but not at the end,
thanks to its low rate of healing. However, since Nel herself doesn't get
the skill until Level 22, you won't use it for her nearly as much as you
might for Fate or Cliff.
MP Damage Up -- Can be great for adding MP damage to attacks that don't
normally have them. Since the rate is based on how much HP damage you're
doing, sticking it on Long Range Strong or Short Range Weak is the best
way to handle it.
Fear -- Isn't that useful... though it might be OK in a pinch if you're trying
to play keep away.
Guardless -- Is important if you're going to be in close combat. If you're a
Nel who only uses Kokuyousen and Touga, you don't need Guardless. But if
you are a Fuujin/Kyoumensatsu/Uraouka Sakkou using Nel, Guardless is almost
required.
And now the skills that you must learn from books:
Common Attack Spell -- Allows you to cast Firebolt, Ice Needle, Earth Grave.
Nel's base INT and MP are very high, making her a natural candidate,
though the spells themselves are very weak. Will be useful only in the
beginning of the game.
Common Support Spell -- Allows you to cast Healing, Antidote, and Silence.
Again Nel is a natural to cast spells, but unlike Common Attack Spell
these spells will be useful throughout the entire game. You may not need
Sophia in your party to heal if you have Nel with Healing.
Get Item -- Only Nel's extremely Short Range Weak and her Short Range Special
knock the opponent down, so this may not be the best skill for her. (But
it is a great skill over all, so put it on somebody like Cliff.)
Stamina Up -- Cuts down Guts consumption. Since it only works on basic
attacks, it's not very useful.
Double Up -- Raises HP and MP damage. Not terribly useful for Nel thanks
to her ho-hum basic attacks.
Drain -- Allows attacks to drop the opponent's Guts to one-half. If you're
using combo chains for Nel, adding this skill will help.
Guts Extension -- Helpful, but not necessary. A bonus if you happen to have
a free slot.
Lucky Star -- I always found this skill useless, though those of you who
have a hard time raising the Heat Up Gauge might want to use it.
Tactical Skills
Enemy Search -- Useful for anyone. Since Nel has water- and wind-elemental
skills, you can also try searching for enemies weak against these
elements.
Cure Condition -- Not that useful, as long as you're well-stocked with
status-effect-curing items around.
Training -- Nice if you want to level-up Nel. Keep in mind that Guts
consumption is multiplied by 3, meaning you will no longer be able to
do some battle skills.
Taunt -- You usually don't want to draw enemies TOWARDS Nel. But they are
entertaining to hear, at least.
Berserk -- Raises ATK by 30%, Guts consumption cut in half... great for
Nel. Except for the fact that DEF goes down 80%. Nel's DEF is one of
her weak points in the first place, so if you are going to have Berserk
on, make sure you have the best armor possible.
Balance Condition -- Since Nel has a naturally high MP total, in some
situations it's worth it to set "Preserve HP!" on with this skill
(you'll thus take all HP damage, divide it by 7, and take it as MP
damage instead.) In other words, if your total MP is higher than 1/7th
of your total HP, set this skill on.
Cancel Combos
The theory of cancel combos is simple. Certain basic attacks can have
their recovery time cancelled by starting a weak battle skill, and certain
weak battle skills can likewise be cancelled into strong battle skills.
Strong battle skills can then be cancelled into weak battle skills, and
so, at least until your HP/Guts runs out, you can do:
Normal Attack -> Weak BS -> Strong BS -> Weak BS -> Strong BS...
Nel's cancellable normal attacks are her Mid and Long Range weak attacks
(where she dashes in and cuts the enemy). Remember that "Mid" is what
activates at Short range when Nel is not close enough to do her 4-hit
Short spinkick. These two attacks will thus be the start of many of Nel's
Cancel Combos.
Many combos require the use of Berserk, which cuts down on the amount of
Guts battle skills take.
Here are some suggested combos to use:
Mid/Long Weak -> Short Weak Shisentou -> Short Strong Kyoumensatsu
Shisentou's fast startup time allows a smooth transition to the finishing
move.
Mid/Long Weak -> Short Weak Shisentou -> Short Strong Uraouka Sakkou
Like the previous combo, only stronger.
Mid/Long Weak -> Short Weak Kyoumensatsu -> Short Strong Uraouka Sakkou
Nel's two most damaging attacks linked together. However, thanks to the
large Guts consumption, you will have to have Berserk active.
Long Weak Fuka -> Short Strong Touga -> Short Weak Touga -> Long Strong
Fuka
Fuka, if activated at long range, makes Nel run up to the enemy (and
therefore into short range); the two Touga's then knock the enemy back
out into long range. Theoretically, if you had enough Guts you could
continue this combo indefinitely. However Touga takes a lot of Guts, and
Berserk is required for this chain. You can pause slightly in between
attacks to try and recover Guts instead of cancelling.
Long Weak Touga -> Long Strong Kokuyousen
A nasty one-two punch. Touga has a chance to freeze, and Kokuyousen is
its normal powerful self. Not many enemies will stand up to this combo
for long. Requires Berserk; Strong Touga -> Weak Kokuyousen does not
require Berserk (but will do much less MP damage).
Long Weak Raikouha -> Long Strong Kokuyousen
Alternative for those strong against water/weak against wind. This
version also does not require Berserk.
6. MISCELLANEOUS
Here's a collection of miscellaneous things about Nel.
Item Creation
Cooking 30 Alchemy 20 Craft 15 Compounding 10
Blacksmith 25 Writing 14 Machinery 5 Synthesis 10
Nel excels at Cooking, and is reasonably good at Blacksmithing and
Alchemy. In Blacksmithing, there are many nearly exclusive items that
only she or one of the Blacksmith Creators can make; these are by and
large unique weapons for her such as the Rounsel Dagger, Assassin
Dagger, and Arcwind.
Voice Samples
Here's a list of Nel's in-battle quotes. The "rare" quotes are quotes
that are used rarely (what else?) while performing a battle skill instead
of the battle skill's name itself. So sometimes instead of saying
"Kokuyousen!" Nel will say "Haaaaaaaa!" instead.
