Introduction
*************
In 2003, Sony Japan released 'SIREN' (サイレン) and the world was introduced to
a rural Japanese town called Hanyuda (sometimes spelled 'Hanuda') where life
has become a nightmare. One night Hanyuda is devastated by an earthquake,
the eerie sound of an air-raid siren and swamped by water the colour of blood
which is turning its inhabitants into 'Shibito' (屍人), which - in kanji -
literally means 'dead person'. Unfortunately, these dead people, well, you
wouldn't know they were dead. They walk, do repetative tasks and they don't
like you. Some have guns, others just stalk but they WILL kill you given the
opportunity.
Ten survivors have to escape the town before they join the ranks of the
Shibito and the red water transforms them. They have three days and only
'Sight-jacking' - the strange ability to see through others' eyes - gives
them any chance of escape.
Note: All information about plot is taken from the English language (PAL)
version, officially titled 'Forbidden SIREN'. However because of the
uniquely 'Japaneseness' of the game, names are given in the Japanese fashion
of family name first and honourifics are used where appropriate. This in an
attempt to preserve the ethos of the game.
All other information - such as kanji - is taken from the official Japanese
'SIREN' website, the official English 'Forbidden SIREN' site, the two Japanese
'SIREN' strategy guides and the Official Japanese and English game manuals
(see siren.felixmcli.org for scans of the Japanese manuals).
It's needless to say, this guide contains - or will when completed - MASSIVE,
UNMARKED SPOILERS!! You have been warned!
Comments are welcome, this is my first guide so please email me on
[email protected].

Part One - Characters
**********************
Characters fall into two catagories: Playable and NPC (non-playable
characters). The latter means that you do not directly control the character,
instead the playable character takes the role of guiding or protecting them
in specific senarios or simply interacting with them.
I have added 'Actor' as the Japanese characters were modeled on their
'seiyuu' (声優), the actors who did the voices. Strangely, the English manual
doesn't credit the English language actors, only the Japanese ones.
______________________________________________________________________________
Name: SUDA Kyoya (須田恭也)
Age: 16
Sex: Male
Occupation: Student
From: Tokyo
Japanese Actor: SHINODA Mitsuyoshi
English Dub: ????
Kyoya-kun is the 'main' character of the game in that he has the most senarios,
He's your normal, everyday high school student who discovers a messageboard
www.occultland.com, a website discussing a mysterious town called Hanyuda where
a massacre took place. Fascinated, Kyoya-kun decides to take a look and, after
signing on to the messageboard to register his interest, leaves on July 31st
2003. He accidentally runs into a ceremony being held in the woods just before
the earthquake hits and the siren sounds. After being shot by a crazed Shibito
cop, he falls into the Mana River and into unconsciousness, waking up to a
nightmare.
Fate: Despite her physical demise, Miyako guides Kyoya through the Mirror Pool
and into the Inferno, the dimension which the Hanyudan scriptures call
Paradise. There he fights Kajiro Jun for possession of the mystical Homeranagi
sword and, using the combined power of the Uryen statuette given to him by
Makino Kei, Kyoya defeats and beheads Datatsushi. Days later, Kyoya-kun
returns to the timeless dimension of post-Siren Hanyuda and invokes the power
of the sword and the Uryen to erase all trace of the Shibito. He goes down in
legend as the murderer of the 33 people who disappeared in 1976 and then walks
off into the fog of Hanyuda.
Note: Want to chat to Kyoya-kun? Go to his section of the European site (first
plaque from the left) and click on the computer screen, after clicking on the
weblink, a Yahoo-style PM (private message) will pop up, allowing you to chat
with him. This is basically a way to sign up to the mailing list but it's fun!
Kyoya-kun will offer you information on his trip to Hanyuda and photographs.
If you fail to give your email, he'll go off in a huff but it's scary the
first time and the responses are amazingly convincing. Also, while in his
room, look at the desk itself and click on the sight-jacked floppy disk next
to the JR Pass to download a cool screensaver featuring everyone's favourite
model, Mihama Naoko! There's a clock, too and don't forget the sound
effects . . . .
______________________________________________________________________________
Name: YAO Hisako (八尾比沙子)
Age: Unknown but looks in mid-twenties.
Sex: Female
Occupation: Kyudoume (きゅどうめ), a priestess of Mana, the town's religion.
From: Hanyuda
Japanese Actor: MINAMI Risako
English Dub: ???? but sounds like Lara Croft from LCTR:AOD.
Hisako-san is one of the first people Kyoya meets after arriving in Hanyuda
and being shot by a crazed cop. She is calm and seems well aware of what's
going on. As a priestess and Guide of Mana, the towns religion, Hisako seems
much wiser than he age and wears the red habit of a nun but who exactly is she?
Shimura Akira, the oldest survivor, seems to know her and he calls her
Yaobikuni, the name of an immortal nun. Is Hisako really human or is she
something else?
Fate: After invoking flames to kill both Miyako and Ayako inside the Mana
Stone, Hisako summons Datatsushi and when it goes on a rampage before having
its non-corporeal form weaken by sunlight, she retreats to the Inferno and
gives her god enough strength to return to battle Suda Kyoya-kun. When it is
decapitates and the dimension begins to collapse. Hisako's hair goes white
and, grabbing the head, she falls onto a plate and is sucked into somekind of
wormhole which transports to many different times. As long as Hanyuda and the
curse exists, so she is doomed to exist also.
______________________________________________________________________________
Name: KAJIRO Miyako (神代美耶子)
Age: 14
Sex: Female
Occupation: Unknown.
From: Hanyuda
Japanese Actor: OKAMOTO Natsuki
English Dub: ????
Miyako-chan is the blind daughter of the cursed Kajiro family, the oldest clan
in Hanyuda. She is a strange girl who is ostracised by the townsfolk and her
only friends before Kyoya arrived, were her white dog, Kereb and Yomoda
Harumi-chan. In fact, so hated is she by the people of Hanyuda that Miyako
doesn't even appear of her family's register. As the game progresses, it
becomes clear that she really is quite sweet and opens up to Kyoya-kun. She is
in reality, a nice person who wants to escape her destiny as the 'bride of
God'.
Fate: Miyako is killed in order to raise Datatsushi but because of her
attachment to Kyoya-kun and the fact her blood runs in his veins, she remains
to guide him in the final battle against the god.
Note: After completing the four sections of the European 'Forbidden SIREN'
site, Miyako-san's section is automatically unlocked . . . . prepare to be
scared.
______________________________________________________________________________
Name: KAJIRO Jun (神代淳)
Age: 19, born on November 29th 1984
Sex: Male
Occupation:
From: Hanyuda
Japanese Actor: TOKURA Yuki
English Dub: ????
The adopted son of the Kajiro family, Jun is at the midnight ceremony and
Kyoya-kun later meets up with him whilst escorting Miyako-chan to the church.
Jun makes a reference that Kyoya is going to visit the 'Other Side' before
Miyako-chan hits him over the head. He later reappears in Janobaku Valley,
trying to drag her away. As the adopted son, Jun is Ayako's fiance and it is
they who must bring the next 'sacrifical lamb' for the next ceremony into the
world.
Fate: After watching his betrothed die, Jun sides with Hisako and goes with
her to the Inferno but because Jun isn't of the Kajiro clan by blood, he too
begins to turn and Kyoya eventually defeats him with the power of the Uryen
and gains from him the holy sword, Homeranagi.
______________________________________________________________________________
Name: KAJIRO Ayako (神代亜矢子)
Age: 17, born on August 24th 1986
Sex: Female
Occupation:
From: Hanyuda
Japanese Actor: MATSUI Aya
English Dub: ????
The natural daughter of the Kajiro family, Ayako isn't introduced until half-
way into the game. She is the betrothed of Jun and hates Miyako-chan so much
that she slams a scythe into the wall next to her sister's head. Ayako-san
blames Miyako for the chaos which has taken over the town and yet also seems
terrified of her own fate.
Fate: Ayako was to be the mother of the next generation of Kajiro daughters
but because Hisako knew the god would be reawakened, she destroyed Ayako as
well using the same flames which killed her sleeping sister.
______________________________________________________________________________
Name: TAKEUCHI Tamon (竹内多聞)
Age: 34, born on February 14th 1969
Sex: Male
Occupation: Professor of Folklore, Josei University
From: Tokyo but born in Hanyuda
Japanese Actor (Adult): TACHI Masaki
(Child): TOYAMA Sakumi
English Dub: ????
Tamon-sensei was born in Hanyuda and I speculate it was the strange happenings
there which led him to become a Professor in Folklore in the Cultural
Anthropology Department of Josei University. He's returned to Hanyuda to do
research, accompanied by one of his students, Anno Yoriko. He seems a little
bad tempered and snaps at Yoriko, suggesting he is not happy that she
accompanied him. Tamon-sensei was a child when the first earthquake struck in
1976 and his parents were among the 33 who disappeared.
Fate: In a way Tamon survives. He begins to turn during the last stages of the
game and, hearing the voices of his missing parents, makes his way to his
childhood home and collapses in their arms. Days later, Anno Yoriko - armed
with a baseball bat - rescues him from his rotting Shibito parents and they
escape however, after reading an interview with Toyama-san, it's hard to say
whether Tamon returned to the real world or whether he stayed in the other-
world of the game with Yoriko.
______________________________________________________________________________
Name: ANNO Yoriko (安野依子)
Age: 22
Sex: Female
Occupation: College Student, Josei University
From: Tokyo
Japanese Actor: MIZUNO Masami
English Dub: ????
Yoriko-san has a huge crush on her tutor, Tamon-sensei - this conclusion is
driven to by the portraits of him which litter her notes. So, she has decided
to accompany him on his research trip to Hanyuda. She can be pushy and whiny
but her heart is in the right place. After losing Tamon-sensei, she arrives in
Harayadori only to be rescued by Shimura Akira-san who leads her to Janokubi
Valley where she is reunited with her teacher. However, Akira-san kills
himself and begins to turn, shooting Yoriko and thus beginning her
transformation into one of the Shibito.
Fate: Saved from transforming by being given blood from Kyoya-kun, Yoriko
eventually finds Tamon-sensei in the nest and when again separated, she finds
him in his family home, rescuing him from his parents by kicking arse with a
baseball bat!!! It is presumed she stays with Tamon-sensei in the otherworld.
______________________________________________________________________________
Name: MAKINO Kei (牧野慶)
Age: 27
Sex: Male
Occupation: Kyudoushi (きゅどうし), a priest and spiritual leader of Mana, the
town's religion.
From: Hanyuda
Japanese Actor: MITSUDA Nobuaki
English Dub: ????
Separated at birth from his twin brother, Kei is the leader of the Hanyuda's
religious community. He seems cold and nowhere near as friendly as Hisako-san
but also the impression is given that he is inexperienced when it comes to
conducting certain religious rites and looks to Hisako for support.
Fate: He is shot by his twin, Miyata Shiro, and we assume he dies at the
scene. His brother then takes on his appearence for the rest of the game.
______________________________________________________________________________
Name: MIYATA Shiro (宮田司郎)
Age: 27
Sex: Male
From: Hanyuda
Occupation: Physician
Japanese Actor: MITSUDA Nobuaki
English Dub: ????
Miyato Shiro is the identical twin of Makino Kei but the two lead opposite
lives. Both seem aware of their relationship but are not close, this is purely
because of their vocations. He was in love with Mina but killed and buried her
in the woods Janokubi Valley prior to the start of the game. When he awakens,
the burial site is empty as if someone clawed their way out of the earth.
Fate: After murdering his twin and adopting his identity, Shiro-sensei takes
it upon himself to do all he can to fix the mess in Hanyuda. After flooding
the nest, he sees Shibito rising from the riverbed and, in exchange for his
own life, he invokes the power of the Uryen to free the souls of the wandering
Shibito. Released, Mina and Risa call to him from a sphere of light and he
falls in the hole the Uryen created.
______________________________________________________________________________

uses their close psychic connection to turn Risa. Dressed in her sister's
uniform, Risa then stalks Shiro-san before he knocks her unconscious and

From: Hanyuda
Japanese Actor: KATO Tadao
English Dub: ????
A native of Hanyuda, Akira-san lost his wife and son in the original 'quake
in 1976. He blames the Kajira family for the mysterious things going on and as
the reason for his families' disappearence. The other townsfolk call him an
'old fool' and the authorities ignore any of his complaints that something is
going on in Hanyuda. He is out hunting when the events of the game begins and
crosses paths with both Mihama Naoko and rescues Anno Yoriko but, after seeing
his fellow villagers heading towards the Mana River, now an ocean, he takes his
gun and his own life.
Fate: After attempting to kill himself and returning briefly as a crazed,
sniper before Takeuchi Tamon shoots him. Moments later, he awakens to realise
he is truly damned and begins to laugh, his voice becoming like the Shibito

Naoko-san is the host of a new paranormal TV show produced by 333 TV called
'Darkness Japan' -'Occult JAPAN' in Europe - and their next show will be on
the mysteries of Hanyuda and the tsuchinoko. At the age of 20 she landed a role
in a popular Japanese TV show called 'Eat your Heart Out' but as an ex-model,
Naoko-san is somewhat vain and narcissistic. She seems to be worried her
experiences in Hanyuda will lead to grey hair. She does appear genuinely
scared of her assignment but is eager to make her mark on television.
Fate: Led by her own vanity, she eventually chooses to become a Shibito by
drinking the water at Mizuhiruko Spring and, after spending Tomoko-chan's last
level pracing around in ecstasy at her eternal beauty, transforms into a
cute-but-deadly dog Shibito.
