1.  Introduction
===============================================================================
Hello!

This is my 3rd text-based guide. I'm a big fan of classic Sega titles and I
think the Sega Ages 2500 series was a great idea! I've been importing most of
the Japanese versions as they've been released and even pre-ordered Phantasy
Star Generation 1 and the Columns & Tant-R + Bonanza Bros. Set. I was surprised
that Sega published this game in North America after it was reported
that Conspiracy Entertainment had the rights (it seems they still handled the
localization). It's the first Sega Ages title to be released in North America
by Sega (Working Designs brought out the Saturn games).

9 Sega Ages 2500 games at a MSRP of $20 is a great value, although quality
varies between games. I personally think the best work was done on Fantasy Zone
and Space Harrier, which I gladly paid $25 each for the Japanese versions.

Although Sega Classics Collection is 9 Sega Ages 2500 games for less than the
price of 1 Sega Ages 2500 title at 2,500Yen, it's interesting that the reviews
have scored lower than reviews for individual Sega Ages 2500 games. I believe
players were happier with the Sega Ages 2500 titles because each game was
judged for their own content rather than being bogged down by the lower quality
titles.

It's unfortunate that Sega Classics Collection saves data from the individual
games into one save file. Not only does it remove the cool save file icons
that were in the the Japanese versions and makes it difficult to manage files
for the individual games in the collection, but it's also related to a game
bug/error that corrupts Virtua Racing save data.

After researching the Virtua Racing save bug/error, I've decided to document
my findings of the game bugs/errors as well as the bonus features I've found
so that other players may use the information to better enjoy the games.

3.  Virtua Racing - Game Bugs/Errors
===============================================================================
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WARNING!!!SEVERE BUG!!!WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sega Classics Collection/Virtua Racing Save Corruption
(Caused by saving any other SCC game before Virtua Racing!)
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
A Class

If a Sega Classics Collection save file is created by saving ANY
Sega Classics Collection game besides Virtua Racing, the game won't be able
to load Virtua Racing data from the memory card.

Corruption can be avoided saving Virtua Racing data first, before saving any
other Sega Classics Collection data to the memory card.

For players who want to keep all their SCC data on 1 card:
Because all Sega Classics Collection games save to one file, it's not
possible to use the PS2 memory card menu to transfer individual files from
one Sega Classics Collection save file to another. However, it's possible to
transfer files by loading the file in the game, swapping the memory card in
Slot 1, and then causing the game to save (varies by each game). This adds or
overwrites the data for the individual SCC game, NOT the whole SCC save file.

WARNING!!! IT'S EASY TO ACCIDENTALLY ERASE THE WRONG DATA BECAUSE MOST OF THE
SCC GAMES AUTO SAVE WITHOUT WARNING WHEN PRE-EXISTING DATA IS DETECTED!

This method can't be used to salvage corrupted Virtua Racing save data
because it can't be loaded.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes and observations:
When playing Virtua Racing with a corrupted file. the game doesn't show any
problems with the save file ("Save Completed" messages still appear) until
the player tries to load manually from the SAVE&LOAD options menu. The game
will display a "Loading failed" message. Auto loading also appears to load
normally, but the player's progress won't be present in the game.

Although Virtua Racing data can't be loaded from a corrupted SCC file, saving
Virtua Racing data still adds to the size of the corrupted file. This can be
|seen by observing the size of the file before and after saving Virtua Racing )
data to the corrupted file.

Manually loading from a corrupted Sega Classics Collection file that doesn't
have Virtua Racing data brings up the "Loading failed" message rather than
"No save file detected." which appears when no SCC file is present.

Normally, an "overwrite warning" message when manually saving over functional
Virtua Racing data through the SAVE&LOAD options menu. Trying to manually
save over a corrupted file brings up the checking, saving, and "Save
Completed" messages without displaying an "overwrite warning" message.

No problems have been seen so far with other SCC game saves and functional
Virtua Racing save data, but problems are still possible.

This bug is what inspired me to make this guide. Due to the bug's severity,
Game Bugs/Errors is the first section listed for Virtua Racing as opposed to
being the last section as it is for other games in this guide.
\-----------------------------------------------------------------------------/

Virtua Racing: All CPU Players Earn 0 Points When Player Loses By Time Over
(Grand Prix Mode can be won by losing all races by Time Over!)
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
B Class

When a Race is lost in Grand Prix Mode by running out of time, the player
doesn't earn any Points. However, the CPU players also don't earn any points.

At the end of a Set, when everyone has 0 Points, the game seems to assume
that the player is 1st in Points and advances to the next Set.

Players can advance through Grand Prix Mode and see the ending (small scene
with credits) simply by losing all the Races by Time Over. Easy, huh? :P

Reminder: Players don't earn Points for unlocking cars in each race they lose
by Time Over.
\-----------------------------------------------------------------------------/

Virtua Racing: "RY NEXT STAG" Appears After Losing By Time Over
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
C Class

On a normal TV (not widescreen), Grand Prix Mode, Race 1-5, after losing by
Time Over, the message "RY NEXT STAG" appears (part of the "R" and "G" are
off-screen). I assume it's supposed to be "TRY NEXT STAGE" but the sides are
off-screen since the message is too large and doesn't scale back far enough.
:P

I haven't seen any indication that this game is capable of displaying in
widescreen mode.
\-----------------------------------------------------------------------------/

Virtua Racing: "BAY BRIDGE" Track Name Doesn't Appear On Replay Result Screens
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
C Class

After completing Race 3 in any Set in Grand Prix Mode, the name of 3rd track,
BAY BRIDGE is missing from the 1st, 2nd, and 4th result screens.

This also occurs during the replay for Races 4-6, but only on the 4th result
screen since the 1st and 2nd screens display the name of the track completed.

4.  Virtua Racing - Secrets/Unlockable Features
===============================================================================
Unlockable Cars
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
The following cars can be unlocked by earning at least a certain amount of
Possession Points in Grand Prix Mode and then completing the current Set.

F-1 70's - Acceleration  (51 Possession Points Required)
Prototype - Max Speed   (121 Possession Points Required)
Coupe - Drift           (181 Possession Points Required)
Classic - Handling      (251 Possession Points Required)

Grand Prix Mode Points Earned Per Race Based On Race Rank:
1st - 10 Points
2nd - 5 Points
3rd - 4 Points
4th - 3 Points
5th - 2 Points
6th - 1 Points
7th - 0 Points
8th - 0 Points

Grand Prix mode consists of 5 Sets of races, 6 Races each.
300 Points is the most that can be earned in each Grand Prix mode session.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes:
Possession Points must be unlocked in the same Grand Prix Mode session.
For example: Completing a Grand Prix Mode with 200 Possession Points then
earning 110 Possession Points in another Grand Prix Mode session will NOT
unlock the Classic car.

Unlockable cars can't be used in Arcade Mode.

5.  Virtua Racing - Gameplay Motes And Tips
===============================================================================
Extra Tracks Available In Grand Prix, Free, And 2P Modes
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
There are 3 additional tracks (Island, Mountain, and Beltway) available Grand
Prix, Free, and 2P modes. They could be overlooked since they're not
available in Arcade Mode.
\-----------------------------------------------------------------------------/

CPU Opponents Will Gang Up On The Player
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
There 7 CPU opponents that the player races against in Arcade, Grand Prix,
and Free mode. Be careful when trying to pass them. They may intentionally
steer into the player.

The CPU opponents also appear to have no collision with each other.
\-----------------------------------------------------------------------------/

CPU Difficulty Varies By Which Car Is Used
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
In Grand Prix Mode, the CPU players use the same car as the player.
If they seem too hard, try using different cars if they've been unlocked.
For example: CPU cars seem to be easier to beat with the Prototype car, while
they're much harder when the Classic car is used.

6.  Fantasy Zone - Secrets/Unlockable Features
===============================================================================
"WRONG END" (Bad Ending) And True Ending In Normal Mode
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
In Normal Mode, completing the game without unlocking all the Rounds/Stages
will give the player the "WRONG END," while beating the game with all the
Rounds/Stages are unlocked will give the player the true ending (same as
Arcade mode, except it's followed by credits with boss art).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note:
It's easy to miss the "WRONG END" (bad ending) because there's no way to get
it after unlocking all the Rounds/Stages.
\-----------------------------------------------------------------------------/

Gallery Mode Character Locations
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
Character models can be unlocked in Gallery mode by playing Challenge mode.

When enemies and bosses are destroyed in Challenge mode, they may drop a red
coin. Collecting the red coin and completing the stage without dying will
unlock the character model in Gallery mode.

Character    -  Rounds/Stages They Can Be Found In

I recommend unlocking Alien and Opapa before unlocking Rounds/Stages.
Unlocking Rounds/Stages adds bosses to Round12 Salfar, making the Round more

When viewing Opa-Opa in Gallery mode, pressing Left on the directional button
turns his legs on and off, while pressing Right changing the type of wings
he's using. Evil Wings are also available after it's unlocked by purchasing
it from the Challenge mode Store.

The boss, Ida-2, is a reference to Ida, a stage and boss from Space Harrier.
Space Harrier was released in 1985 and Fantasy Zone was released in 1986.

Rocket Engine  $100,000  Increases Opa-Opa's speed more than the Turbo
Engine. Lasts until Opa-Opa is defeated or the

Laser Beam     $1,000    Allows the player to equip the Laser Beam for about
20 seconds. Less powerful than than normal shot when

Wide Beam      $500      Allows the player to equip the Wide Beam for about
20 seconds. Less powerful than than normal shot when

7Way Shot      $5,000    Allows the player to equip the 7Way Shot for about

Fire Bomb      $2,000    1 use per bomb, up to 10 can be stocked. When it
hits the ground, it creates a wave that hits
                        everything visible on the ground

Smart Bomb     $2,000    1 use per bomb, up to 10 can be stocked. Hits
everything on the screen and destroys most enemy
shots. Doesn't do much damage to enemies that take
                        more than 1 hit.

Heavy Bomb     $2,000    1 use per bomb, up to 10 can be stocked. Drops

The following weapons must be unlocked from the Challenge Mode Store before
they're available in the Balloon Parts Shop.
(Unlocked weapons are only available in Normal and Challenge modes only.)

Barrier        $20,000   Equips Opa-Opa with a Barrier that absorbs 3 hits
from weak enemies and most enemy shots.

Evil Wings     $200,000  Fastest speed power-up in the game. Lasts until
Opa-Opa is defeated or the player changes the part.

Wild Beam      $10,000   Allows the player to equip the Wild Beam for about
20 seconds. A wider version of the Wide Beam. Weak
and each shot can only hit 1 enemy. Shots are likely
to be absorbed by other enemies or obstacles instead
                        of hitting the intended target.

14Way Shot     $40,000   Allows the player to equip the 14Way Shot for about
20 seconds. Similar to the 7Way Shot, except it also
                        fires behind Opa-Opa.

Gravity Bombs  $50,000   1 use per bomb, up to 10 can be stocked. Drops a
horizontal row of Heavy Bombs that cover the entire
                        screen.

Inf. Smart     $0        Lasts until Opa-Opa is defeated or the player
changes the part. Same as Smart Bombs except it's
free from the Parts Shop (after it's unlocked) and
it can be used unlimited times as long as it's
equipped. Useful, but not always the most effective
                        weapon.

Heavy Bombs Can Defeat Round11 Depooble Boss, Pickon, With 1 Hit
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
If the player hits Round 11 boss, Pickon, with a Heavy Bomb (bought from the
Parts Shop) it will be destroyed. This can be useful when collecting Gold in
Challenge mode.

This also works with Gravity Bombs, but they're much more expensive.

Evil Wings Don't Affect The Ending
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
I didn't notice any difference in the ending after beating Normal mode on
Hard without dying, all Rounds/Stages unlocked, equipping the Evil Wings in
the last stage.

Game Display Shows Player 2 Information When The Game Is Only 1 Player
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
C Class (Could be more severe since it can be considered false advertising.)

At the top of the screen, there are areas for "2UP" Score and Gold even
though the game is only 1 Player.

*This is mentioned at the bottom of page 11 in the Sega Classics Collection
manual.

The "2UP" could be there because the display appears to be based on the
arcade version which has a 2 player alternating mode.

An alternating mode in this version would have made Arcade mode more accurate
to the original arcade version.

I think the best-case scenario would have been the addition of a 2 player
simultaneous mode with player 2 as Upa-Upa from Fantasy Zone The Maze/Akai
Koudan Zillion (the anime series).

Turn Object Shadows On (Fractal OFF ONLY)
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
*This code only works if Fractal is set to OFF in the Options menu.

To activate ground shadows under objects (such as Harrier, enemies, and
shots), on the title screen or title menu, input the following code with the
directional button: RIGHT, LEFT, DOWN, UP

Harrier's hit-reaction sound ("Aaaaaaugh!") will play indicating the code has
been input. (The code can also be input multiple times to make Harrier yell
over and over. :P)

During the game there will be shadows displayed under objects such as
Harrier, enemies, and shots.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes:
Shadows make the game look more like the original versions of Space Harrier
(which have shadows by default) and can help make it easier to judge object
distances.

This code is the same as the sound test code for the Sega Master System

Fractal Option Affect Many Aspects Of The Game
/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
The Fractal option in the Options menu changes a lot of the game's aspects.
Turning it "OFF" does things that makes the game much more like the classic
versions of Space Harrier.

Here's a list of elements that the Fractal option affects:

When Fractal is set to "OFF," the following stages are skipped:
Peetaan, Bonus Stage 3, and Sdune. This makes the game much easier.

With Fractal set to "OFF," the ground is always flat and Harrier can always
run on it. There are rough surfaces that Harrier floats over instead of
running on when Fractal is set to "ON."

When Fractal is set to "OFF," the game always begins with the phrase:
"Welcome to the Fantasy Zone. Get ready!"
The phrase used is random when Fractal is set to "ON." There is a Starting
Phrases list below.

Fractal set to "OFF" also allows the player to turn on ground shadows by
inputting the code from the "Secrets/Unlockable Features" section above.
