SEEK AND DESTROY - STRATEGY GUIDE AND TOWN/WEAPONS LIST v0.9 [2003-02-01]

--INTRO--
Seek & Destroy is an amazing deal for its USA price point of $10,
a great blend of mission based tank combat and clever minigames, with
a hint of bizarre RPG thrown in to boot (a nation of sentient tanks?),
plus lots of cool weapons and devices to bolt on to your tank.
Only its lack of multitap support (and, I guess others would say
online play) prevents it from scratching that tankgame itch I've
had ever since BattleTanx on the N64. Wah, I want a good four player
tank game on Gamecube or PS2... (WDL Thundertanks? I said "good")
Word has it that this was a full price game in its original markets,
but given the amazing release price of $10 for release here. The
translation seems rushed in places, but not much that interferes with
the game. However, the instructions were a little light, which is why
I'm including a POINTERS section in what would otherwise be a simple
town and weapons list.
--POINTERS--
*Like the manual says, your initial choice of tank doesn't matter too much.
*It's easy to miss how much useful stuff is in the "Select Button" menus:
-during a battle, you can get a Mission Description...very useful
to know what the heck is going on, complete with maps.
-you can hit select to skip cutscenes, especially ones you've seen when
you have to repeat missions.
-you can set the camera under "Options". I find Type-2 much easier to use.
(optionally, keep it on Type-1 and press L2 a lot)
-there's a City Map when in towns - crucial for locating the Heliport,
Shop/Garage, and Arena
-Also in cities, there's a "Go Out" option to get out of towns more easily.
-on the overland travel screen, you can get to a helpful map as
well as a "Garage" option where you can change your tank's configuration.
*Losing a battle is no big deal, you can always try it over again with
no penalty...same for hitting Escape.
*After the first battle you should go straight back to the first city
Rivageders and powerup at the Shop.
*It took me a while to realize that you can talk to people in the towns
by pressing Circle. Most of them don't have much interesting to say,
but in at least one point of the game you need to talk to the General to
advance.
*You can raise the gunbarrel with the right stick. (Something you can't
do with the shoulder buttons.)
*When you buy a new weapon or part, be sure to go to the garage and
customize your tank to use it!
*When you're browsing weapons and devices, either to buy or ones you
have installed, you can pull up a description of the weapon.
*You can get to a "Garage" from a number of places: the Shop, the
Arenas, the Overland map, but you can only save at the single
proper Garage in each town.
*You can sell an add-on for the same price as you bought it, so feel
free to experiment. (It might be a good idea to go over to the town's
Battle Arena and try out before setting out on missions for real.)
Also, prices are constant across cities.
*You get about half the original cash when repeating Battle Arena
matches you've already beaten.
*There seems to be a mistranslation at one point...if it says you
"can" bring a certain device into an Arena, it means you can't.
So go to the Garage option and take off the offending part.
*You'll probably want to sell most of the weapons you don't need...
it's sometimes nice to have an arsenal to choose from when its time
to equip, but you can always go back to a town and repurchase what
you need, and money is sometimes in short supply.
*The main factor in choosing a tank body is "Max" That's an
indication of how much you can carry before the tank will
get bogged down. Also, the "H"eavy, "T"urret, and
"B"ody indicates you can mount weapons and devices of that type.
*After you start using a new tank body you'll have to re-customize
and put all your devices on it.
*The Radar is not like most tank games...N/S/E/W are fixed, rather
than the "up"="in front of you" rule that you might be more used to.
It's more like a map centered around your tank than a regular radar.
*The final battle is in the northenmost city on the eastmost continent,
so you might want to make sure you finish any other missions and
arena games before then.
*Your choice of weapons and tools is up to you, though I found a
Long Shot and the 16-missile (both available in the first few cities)
to be a terrific combination, especially when combined with long range
radar and a good computer.
*There's a surprising amount of historical information in the "Museum"
section...someone really did their homework!
*I managed to somehow miss the entire city of Tughl for my first
time through. If you ever find a secret part, bring it to the
pink truck in this area...
*For completing the final battle and for beating all the arena games,
you get special wing prizes
*There's an oddball pink tank by the heliport in the first town,
Rivageders. You give him codes, he gives you rewards. The only code
I know how to get fairly is found by poking your nose into the
volcano...
--TOWNS & WEAPONS--
As I was playing through the game, I got annoyed by not knowing what
weapons were in what town, so I decided to compile the information
in a browsable form. I didn't duplicate all the weapon info...to a
certain extent, you *can* go by price despite what the manual suggests.
