 1. Introduction
====================

Welcome to my Character Guide for Lord Kenshin Uesugi (Uesugi Kenshin in the
original Japanese version). The purpose of this document is to provide accurate
and reliable information that will aid in the use and development of Lord
Kenshin as a Samurai Warrior. The guide was made, in the most part, based on my
experience playing the game. While the procedures to obtain Lord Kenshin's
fifth weapon, as well as to unlock some missions are based on guides submitted
to GameFAQs by EChang and TheLeftWings, they are by no means mere copies of
their work. Everything I included in this guide was personally tested and
slightly modified by myself, in order to provide more details or just to make
things simpler, depending on the case, given the fact that this is a guide for
the American version of the game. I am also fully aware of the fact that my way
is not the only way of getting things done, and I myself discovered other ways,
but for the sake of simplicity I only wrote what I considered the easiest,
simplest methods. As far as it concerns game aspects, my work is finished.
Other sections may be added at a later time, depending, among other things, on
the users' feedback.

 2. About Lord Kenshin
=========================

'The Dragon of Echigo,' Kenshin is among the most fearsome of the Samurai
Warriors. Originally a member of the Yamauchi Uesugi family, he took over
control of the Kanto region. Later he entered the priesthood and changed his
name to Kenshin. His belief in the god of victory, Bishamonten, and the
guardian gods of Buddhism were deep. His battle flag featured the character
'bi' (short for Bishamonten) emblazoned on a white background. He fought
countless battles against his old nemesis Shingen Takeda and Ujiyasu Houjou and
his son Ujimasa of the Kanto region, but it can be said that he was a righteous
person who never fought an unjust battle.

 3. Great Bishamonten, God of War
====================================

Male. The god of war and warriors, Bishamonten is usually clad in armor, with a
spear in one hand and a pagoda in the other. He is the scourge of evil doers,
and the most powerful among the Four Buddhist Guardians of the Four Directions
(Shitenno). He is also an important member of the Tenbu, as are the Shitenno,
and one of Japan's Seven Lucky Gods.

The small pagoda he often carries symbolizes the divine treasure house. He is
both a protector of and dispenser of its treasure -- he shares the pagoda's
vast treasures with only "the worthy." Also called Tamonten (Listens to Many
Teachings), for he protects the places where Buddha preaches and listens always
to Buddha's teachings. Said to live halfway down the north side of Mount
Sumeru, Bishamon protects the north, and is accompanied by two classes of
mythical beings -- the Yasha (Yaksa) and Rasetsu (Rakshasa).

   Description: Assist the Sadamitsu Usami Army!
   How to Trigger: Appears automatically, around 22 seconds into the stage.

   Mission #2: Wave Attack
   Description: Assist the Kageie Kakizaki Army!
   How to Trigger: Appears automatically, right after Mission #1 is given.

   Mission #3: Wind
   Description: Assist the Yataro Onikojima Army!
   How to Trigger: Appears automatically, right after Mission #2 is given.

   Description: Head for the Takeda Army's main camp!
   How to Trigger: Accomplish any two out of the first three missions;
        otherwise this mission appears a few minutes into the stage.

 7. Element Rune
===================

Stage: Kawanakajima Showdown [Field]
Mode: Story or Free Mode
Difficulty: Any
Requirements: Achieve a KO count of 1000.

Recommended Method:
(Contributed by Chris Cline)

Eliminate Nobushige Oyamada at Kaizu Castle; then return to the Uesugi main
camp and defeat Hanzo Hattori. Go back to Kaizu Castle and defeat Yukimura
Sanada (he has Kunoichi with him as an officer). Now proceed to the middle
area of the map and start killing. Once the KO count of 1000 is achieved, the
enemy supply unit appears at the northeast corner of the map, by the enemy
gate.

Notes and General Recommendations:

+ Play on Easy difficulty, unless you want a challenge. That makes things
 easier and much faster.
+ Ignore the mission to protect Zenkouji, as well as the mission to return to
 the main camp.
+ DO NOT kill the Reserve Captains; that stops the flow of enemy troops into
 the field, which is obviously the last thing you want.
+ Do not use bodyguards, as they can steal KOs.
+ This item may be obtained as Lord Kenshin in Story Mode, or as any character
 in Free Mode.

8.2 Obtaining the Fifth Weapon

Stage: Kawanakajima Showdown [Field]
Difficulty: Hard
Requirements: Occupy Kaizu Castle (Mission #2); defeat Hanzo Hattori (Mission
     #3) and Yukimura Sanada (Mission #5). Retreat back to the main camp
     (Mission #6), and after Keiji Maeda arrives, charge the Takeda main camp
     (Mission #7) within 1'00" (ONE MINUTE) after the mission is given.
Note: Lord Kenshin's Story Mode must have been completed at least once before
     attempting to obtain this weapon. Otherwise the supply unit will not
     appear, even if all other necessary conditions are met.

Method:

1. As soon as the stage begins, ride towards Kaizu Castle. Once there, defeat
  Nobushige Oyamada.
2. Immediately ride back towards Mt. Saijyo, where Hanzo Hattori will appear.
  Defeat him as well.
3. Go back to Kaizu Castle and defeat Yukimura Sanada. To eliminate Kunoichi,
  his officer, is optional.
4. Wait until the Takeda reinforcements come, and when they do, retreat back
  to the main camp. This triggers Keiji Maeda's arrival to support Kenshin.
5. After Keiji arrives, charge straight into the Takeda main camp (it must be
  done within ONE MINUTE after the mission is given). After the event, the
  enemy supply unit appears by Kaizu Castle and runs towards the south.
6. Ride towards the supply unit and kill the Supply Captain for the valuable
  item.
7. Defeat Shingen Takeda to clear the stage.


Notes:

- I can guarrantee the success in obtaining the weapon by following this method
 step by step, IN THE ORDER IN WHICH STEPS ARE LISTED.
- The mentioned locations (Kaizu Castle, Mt. Saijyo) are indicated on the stage
 map.
- RenoSebastius has reported that it is possible to obtain this weapon even if
 Keiji Maeda does not appear as reinforcement.


Recommendations:

+ Obtain a level 4 weapon and some high leveled items before attempting this.
 Mitsuhide Akechi's Betrayal at Honnouji stage is perfect for farming high
 leveled items in Chaos difficulty, since it is not necessary to defeat any
 enemies in order to clear it.
+ Since the Kawanakajima Showdown is a final stage, it may be wise to consider
 resetting Lord Kenshin's statistics. That makes things much easier.
+ If Lord Kenshin's statistics are reset, equip a high leveled Solar Gem (Life
 Bonus), besides the usual attack and defense items, and the saddle. Use the
 remaining slot for another item of your choice.
+ Use the mid-game Save function throughout the stage.

 9. Attacks
==============

9.1 General

SSSS - Slashes to the left and right, thrusts forward, swings his blade in
      circular motion five times, and finishes with a 360 degree spin slash.

Dash
  S - Runs and does one diagonal slash upwards.

Mounted
SSSS : Swings his weapon back and forth, three times; then does five swings in
      circular motion, on his right side.

  T : Varies, depending on the symbol on the background of his weapons. See
      section 9.3 for details.
 XT : Jumps and thrusts his sword on the ground when he lands. Small area
      effect.

ST   : Slashes once and throws his opponent upward.
STT  : Slashes once, throws his opponent upward and then jumps after them,
      slashes once more in mid air and makes them fall to the ground. Enemy
      units near the area also take damage from the impact.
STTT : Slashes once, throws his opponent upwards and then jumps after them,
      slashes once more in mid air, makes them fall to the ground and finishes
      with a 360 degrees spin slash. The opponent is thrown back a long
      distance and suffers heavy damage. The quote: "Perish!"

SST  : Slashes left and right, charges up and slashes diagonally, to the left.
SSTT : Slashes left and right, charges up and follows by four diagonal slashes
      to one side and the other, juggling his opponent in mid air.
SSTTT: Slashes left and right, charges up and follows by four diagonal slashes
      to one side and the other, juggling his opponent in mid air. The final
      hit is a vertical slash with his sword. The quote: "Perish!"

SSST : Charges up, stomps his foot on the ground and creates an earthquake
      effect, damaging and knocking enemies back. Area attack.


9.2 Special

Musou: Slashes towards the left and right, repeatedly. The last hit is a flash
      of light that hits all enemies around him. The quote: "Heavens!"

True Musou: Musou with fire elemental damage added.

Deadlock Attack: Slashes his opponent three times.


9.3 "Arise!": Lord Kenshin's First Charge

A unique feature of Kenshin Uesugi is the fact that his first charge (T) is
determined by the symbols that appear on the background of each one of his
weapons. These symbols, like elements, can vary, which means that not all
individual weapons of his have the same symbol. The exception, of course, is
his fifth weapon (Murakumo), which has the black symbol of Bishamonten. Here
is a description of Lord Kenshin's first charge (T) attacks depending on
symbol:

The Phoenix: If Lord Kenshin's weapon has an orange phoenix on the background,
    pressing T summons a phoenix that flies straight into his opponents. Long
    attack range.

The Wolf: If Lord Kenshin's weapon has a blue wolf on the background, pressing
    T creates a wave of blue energy that circles around him and hits his foes.

The Cross: If Lord Kenshin's weapon has a green circle of crosses on the
    background, pressing T summons a white cross in dark smoke, which explodes
    after a second and damages his opponents. Area effect.

Great Bishamonten: If Lord Kenshin's weapon has a black Japanese character* on
    the background, pressing T summons a large ellipse of clear energy that
    homes into his foes and does damage. Very long attack range. This is the
    best of Lord Kenshin's first charge attacks, and the one that comes with
    his fifth weapon, Murakumo.

* This is the same character on Kenshin's cloak (second outfit). It is 'BI',
 the first character of 'Bishamonten', God of War, and it was Lord Kenshin's

 11. Skills
==============

This is the map of Lord Kenshin's skills. In order to match the way they are
listed in the game, skills are separated in their four categories: Might,
Prowess, Guard and Element. While most skills have three levels of mastery
-with an increase in their training cost per level, of course- those marked as
Rare (*) must be trained only once. Requirements and initial training cost are
listed below each skill, and for skills located to the right of another and
connected to it by a line, at least one level of expertise in the first skill
is an additional requirement.

Example:

In this case, Vitality is a common skill with requirements of 177 life and 110
attack, and an initial training cost of 150 skill points; Resist, on the other
hand, is a Rare skill with requirements of 190 life and 170 attack, and a
unique training cost of 1000 skill points. This is not all, however: since
Resist is located to the right of Vitality and the two of them are connected by
a line, if Lord Kenshin were to be trained in Resist he would first need at
least one level of expertise in Vitality. This being said, let us proceed.

Skills of Everyone. They have no requirements, and it costs a total of 900
skill points to train them to level 3. Because elemental skills are the same
