1. INTRODUCTION

This is a guide for Koei/Omega Force's action game Sengoku Musou 2.
Sengoku Musou 2 is the sequel to the popular Sengoku Musou, known in
America/Europe as Samurai Warriors. Sengoku Musou 2 adds many new
characters and features to the franchise.

Sengoku Musou 2 has a newly revamped skills system that replaces the old
skills and item systems from Sengoku Musou 1. Each general now has
their own list of skills that expands as they gain levels, buy them
from a shop, or steal them from enemy generals. This guide lists all of
the skills in the game and explains how to obtain them.

This FAQ makes use of SJIS encoding in order to display Japanese
characters. I included this feature so that if you do not know
Japanese, you can easily match up the characters on your TV screen
to the characters in this guide. You will need to have support for
viewing Japanese characters on your computer, however. Newer versions
of Windows should have it built in; otherwise, you'll either need to
get a program like NJStar Communicator, or you'll need to get
Japanese character support for Internet Explorer and open this file
in IE instead of Notepad/Wordpad. Go up to View and select Encoding,
then pick Japanese (Auto-Select) to view the characters properly.

The only website authorized to post this FAQ is www.gamefaqs.com. If
you see this document elsewhere, not only are they posting without my
permission, but they likely do not have the most current version of this
FAQ. Emails to me asking questions already answered in the FAQ, even if
the answers are not in the version you are reading, will be deleted
without response.

2. SKILLS BASICS

SKILLS OVERVIEW
The new skills system in Sengoku Musou 2 replaces the old skills system
in Sengoku Musou 1 as well as the equippable items system. Bonuses such
as plusses to health and attack that used to be handled by equipped
items are now also under the skills system.

There are four major categories of skills. Each general also has a personal
that they gain by levelling up. Each skill except the personal skill has
three levels (a few have 4), with each skill becoming more effective at
higher levels. There are no 'skill trees' like in Sengoku Musou 1, so there
are no prerequisites to learning particular skills. To see what skills a
general currently has learned, select 'Personal Preparation' (身支度) from
the battle preparation screen, then select 'Equip Skill' (技能装備). You
can have as many skills equipped on a general as you would like; you can
also turn off a skill if you should so choose (by pressing Square while
highlighting that skill on the skill screen.)

OBTAINING SKILLS
The simplest way to obtain skills is to buy them from the shop, under
the heading 'Learn Skills' (技能取得). When you select this you'll see
the four categories of skills, and a random selection of skills from
each category will be available for you to purchase. When purchasing
skills, you must have the previous level of skill, so if you do not have
a skill at level 1 you cannot purchase the level 2 version of that skill.
The cost of each skill depends on the level as well as the type of
general you are buying skills for. A power-type general such as Maeda
Keiji will be able to buy skills related to attack and such much more
cheaply than a speed-type general like Nene; conversely, Nene will be
able to buy skills related to movement speed at a cheaper price than
Maeda Keiji. The probability that a skill will show up in the shop's list
in the first place is also related to the general's type.

A second way to earn skills is to level up. Every 5 levels, your general
will learn a skill automatically if they do not already have that skill.
At a specific level (10, 20, 30, or 40, depending on the general) they
will also learn their personal skill. The personal skill cannot be
obtained in any other fashion.

Finally, a third way to obtain skills is to 'Steal' them from enemy
generals. If you defeat a general, there is a chance that you can steal
a skill that that general possesses. You can see what skills a general
possesses on the battle preparation screen by selecting General Info
(武将情報). There are also so-called 'Rare Skills' that can ONLY be
obtained by stealing them from enemy generals. When stealing a skill,
you can 'skip' levels; for instance, you can steal a level 2 skill from
a general without knowing the level 1 version. However, to steal a level
3 skill you do need at least the level 1 version.

Again, there is only a chance that you will steal a skill; factors such
as your general's Luck stat play a role. Other factors are defeating
the general quickly and not taking much damage. Luckily you can manipulate
the save/load feature to maximize your stealing abilities. Simply save just
before finishing off a general (途中保存 and then Save 記録 from the menu.).
Of course, don't do this if you've already taken a lot of damage.
If you succeed at stealing, great. If not, soft reset (Start+Select)
and try again.

3. SKILLS LIST

The four major categories of skills are Statistics (能力値), Growth
(成長), Battle (戦闘), and Healing/Special (回復・特殊). There is
also the Personal skill for each general (固有). This section
describes each skill's effect; again, in general, the higher the level
of the skill, the more effective the skill is.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
STATISTICS
The Statistics group of skills mostly replaces the equippable items from
Sengoku Musou 1. These skills simply give bonuses to your generals'
statistics. Since there is no limit to how many skills you can equip,
unlike in Sengoku Musou 1 you can always have bonuses to all of your
skills, making this group of skills fairly effective.

Tanshin no Gi 鍛身の技
Increases maximum Life.

Renshin no Gi 練心の技
Increases maximum Musou. Note that this skill will not change the number
of Musou gauges your general has; if your general currently has 2.9 Musou
gauges, and they equip this skill, they will not have 3 Musou gauges, but
remain at 2.9 Musou gauges (with each gauge being slightly longer).

Moukou no Gi 猛攻の技
Increases Attack.

Kenshu no Gi 堅守の技
Increases Defense.

Kisen no Gi 騎戦の技
Increases Mounted (unlike Sengoku Musou 1, Mounted Attack and Mounted
Defense are now considered together as just one skill.)

Shunsoku no Gi 俊足の技
Increases Speed.

Hiten no Gi 飛天の技
Increases Jump.

Kaiun no Gi 開運の技
Increases Luck.

Shinan no Gi 指南の技
Increases all bodyguard stats.

Eiketsu no Gi 英傑の技
Increases all stats. This is a rare skill. This skill has four levels.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
GROWTH
The Growth group of skills increases the rate at which your general's base
statistics improve at level up. It should be noted that the max level is
50, and that your general will max out their stats by the time they reach
level 50 without any help from these skills, and in the slim chance that
they don't you can continue to gain stats past level 50, so technically
there is no need to ever purchase a Growth skill; however, they WILL allow
your characters to reach their stat maximums faster, so if you aren't
trying to save money they are quite effective.

Tanshin no Sai 鍛身の才
Increases rate of Life gain at level up.

Renshin no Sai 錬心の才
Increases rate of Musou gain at level up. Note that unlike previous Musou
games, there is no disadvantage to having longer Musou gauges, since your
general can always perform a level 1 Musou Ougi if they so desire. Indeed,
some generals have very powerful level 3 Musou Ougis, so this can be a
good investment.

Moukou no Sai 猛攻の才
Increase rate of Attack gain at level up.

Kenshu no Sai 堅守の才
Increases rate of Defense gain at level up.

Kisen no Sai 騎戦の才
Increase rate of Mounted gain at level up.

Shunsoku no Sai 俊足の才
Increases rate of Speed gain at level up.

Hiten no Sai 飛天の才
Increases rate of Jump gain at level up.

Kaiun no Sai 開運の才
Increases rate of Luck gain at level up.

Shinan no Sai 指南の才
Increases rate of bodyguard stats gains when they level up. Like your
own generals, your bodyguards will reach maximum stats without any help
from this skill, but this skill helps them reach maximum faster.

Risshi no Sai 立志の才
Increases the amount of experience gained (+20% per level). This is
a rare skill. This skill has four levels. Although this might seem
pointless after you reach Level 50, in fact it still is quite useful,
since every time you max our your experience bar again you still get
the temporary level up bonuses in battle (5 seconds of double attack,
double defense, max speed, and infinite musou).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
BATTLE
The Battle group of skills are a collection of skills that affect your
characters fighting actions. Elemental skills are included in this group;
note that if you do not have any elemental skills learned, you cannot use
your weapon's elements.

Iai 居合
Increases attack radius. Very helpful overall, and almost necessary for
characters with short weapons (Ishida Mitsunari, Takeda Shingen, Nene,
etc.)

Hiken 秘剣
Allows a chance of critical hits when hitting an enemy. Critical hits
are designated by little white flashes of lightning when hitting an
opponent. The chance of a critical hit goes up as the skill level goes
up.

Dohatsu 怒髪
Increases the rate at which the Musou gauge fills. Extremely helpful.

Rangeki 乱撃
Increases damage as the combo count goes up. In Sengoku Musou 2 (unlike
in 1), the combo counts all hits against separate enemies, so hit
combos ranging even into the hundreds are not uncommon.

Iji 意地
Makes it harder for your generals to become staggered or dizzied. At higher
levels, they won't flinch if being shot by arrows/bullets (a few exceptions
exist, such as power shots) and can resist some hits during their charge
attacks. Also extremely helpful.

Chiryuu 地流
Adds elements to your normal attacks. This does not add to ALL normal
attacks, but rather to the last four hits in your character's S string.
Its usefulness depends on the character as well as which element it is.

Tenryuu 天流
Adds elements to your charge attacks. Again, this can be bothersome in
certain cases (lightning and ice interfere with C2s, for instance), so
its usefulness depends on the general and the element.

Shinryuu 神流
Makes the element during the Musou Hi-ougi (the low-life version of the
Musou Ougi) more powerful. This element is usually fire, although it
can change in some circumstances.

Aun 阿呼
Makes the element during the Musou Saishuu Ougi (the pair version of the
Musou Ougi) more powerful. This element is usually lightning.

Koran 虎乱
Makes the Musou Ougi stronger. This is a rare skill. At level 1, it
simply makes the Musou Ougi do more damage. At level 2, the Musou Ougi
will become the Musou Hi-ougi regardless of current health level (added
fire element + a finisher combo at the end). At level 3, the Musou Ougi
will become the Musou Hi-ougi regardless of current health level, and all
hits become Shura element. This is an extremely powerful skill, especially
at level 3, and can be the difference between having a hard time and
being able to take out generals in one shot.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
HEALING/SPECIAL
This group of skills basically has all of the miscellaneous skills in the
game. Nevertheless, many of them are extremely useful. Etoku and Mekiki
in particular are useful from the very beginning, and should be purchased
ASAP for any general in my opinion.

Yakkatsu 薬活
Increases amount of gain from health and musou items (+10% per level).

Hachiku 破竹
Heals your general for every 100 kills. Useful in the Infinite Castle.

Gekitei 撃蹄
Increases the abilities of your horse.

Sairin 再臨
Brings your general back to life automatically once if killed. This is
a rare skill.

Seiei 精鋭
Increases amount of gain from health and musou items for your bodyguard.

Etoku 会得
Increases success rate of Steal.

Mekiki 目利
Increases chance of finding good weapons.

Senkin 千金
Increases amount of money gained (+20% per level). This is a rare skill.
This skill has four levels. This bonus also applies to money you get for
clearing missions.

Reigen 霊験
Increases amount of time temporary powerups are active (+20% per level).
Has no effect on Takeda Shingen's special tech (10 seconds of powerup).

Shingan 真眼
Shows location of items on the minimap. This is a rare skill. As the
level goes up, the radius of items you can see increases, becoming quite
huge at level 3. This is a very helpful skill when you're farming weapons,
for instance, or if you need some health in a hurry, especially in the
Infinite Castle.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
PERSONAL SKILLS
Each general has one personal skill which they gain upon attaining a
certain level. Personal skills have no inherent levels.

Tenkou Sekka 電光石火
Allows entering special tech stance (R1) during charge attacks. In some
cases this means you can cancel the recovery of a charge attack by
entering stance. You don't even have to perform an actual special tech
to cancel your charge. You must hit somebody in order to cancel (if you
whiff you cannot cancel). Learned by Sanada Yukimura and Azai Nagamasa
at Level 20.

Shishi Funjin 獅子奮迅
Allows countering if being hit by pressing Triangle. Undoubtedly the most
broken skill in the game, as you can break almost any combo. Learned by
Maeda Keiji and Miyamoto Musashi at Level 30.

Kaitou Ranma 快刀乱麻
Increases the effectiveness of weapon powerup special techs. Learned by
Oda Nobunaga and Tachibana Ginchiyo at Level 20.

Kongou Kengo 金剛堅固
Allows pushing back of an opponent by pressing Square while blocking.
Learned by Akechi Mitsuhide and Tokugawa Ieyasu at Level 10.

Senri Tengan 千里天眼
Allows blocking of attacks even from behind. Learned by Uesugi Kenshin
and Naoe Kanetsugu at Level 20.

Seiun no Kokorozashi 青雲之志
Allows jumping during charge attacks. This sounds useless at first, but
actually you can do things like cancel the recovery of a charge attack
into a jump, then do a jump attack right away. In fact, you can even cheese
a general to death by knocking them down, then jump charging, cancelling
the jump charge attack with a jump, and then jump charging again, repeating
until the general is dead. You must actually connect with a charge attack
in order to cancel (i.e. no whiffs) Learned by Oichi at Level 30 and Toyotomi
Hideyoshi at Level 20.

Tenmei Hanten 天命反転
Automatically reflects projectiles if blocked. This is fairly useless
as personal skills go. Learned by Okuni and Ishida Mitsunari at Level 40.

Issai Jintsuu 一射神通
Causes projectile attacks to go through enemies. Learned by Saika Magoichi
and Inahime at Level 30.

Taizan Meidou 大山鳴動
Makes it so that your general is even harder to stagger when their Musou
gauge is full. Combined with Iji Level 3, your general will almost never
stagger. Learned by Takeda Shingen and Shimazu Yoshihiro at Level 40.

Koshi Tantan 虎視耽々
Makes it so that your general gains Musou while blocking. The amount of
Musou gained is proportional to the amount of damage the blocked attack
would've done, so this is very helpful in fighting hyper mode generals,
etc. Learned by Date Masamune at Level 10 and Nouhime at Level 30.

Utsusemi 現世御身
Makes it easier to recover - you can tech earlier than normal. Another
fairly useless personal skill. Learned by Hattori Hanzou and Nene at Level
20.

Kouun Ryuusui 行雲流水
Allows rolling (R2) during charge attacks. You can use this to cancel
the recovery of charge attacks. Like the other charge cancel skills,
you must hit somebody in order to cancel; no whiffing allowed. Learned by
Mori Ranmaru and Fuuma Kotarou at Level 30.

Meikyou Shisui 明鏡止水
Shortens the guard stun if you guard just before an attack is about to hit
you. Pretty hard to use well. Learned by Honda Tadakatsu and Shima Sakon at
Level 20.

4. RARE SKILLS LOCATIONS

There are six rare skills in the game, Eiketsu no Gi (raises all stats),
Risshi no Sai (increases amount of experience gained), Koran (makes Musou
Ougi more powerful), Sairin (brings general back to life once if killed),
Senkin (increases amount of money gained), and Shingan (can see items on
the minimap). Rare skills cannot be purchased in the shop and must instead
be stolen from certain enemy generals. This section lists where each
general who possesses these rare skills can be found. The generals always
have the skill no matter what stage you are playing; the stages listed here
are the Free Mode scenarios you need to play to encouter that general as
an enemy. However, the difficulty you are playing on does affect the level
that the skill is; this list is for playing on Hard difficulty.
Note that to steal the level 3 version of a rare skill, you must have at
least the level 1 version already. Also, you must be playing on Hard
difficulty or above to steal the level 3 version. Finally, three of the six
rare skills (Eiketsu no Gi, Risshi no Sai, Senkin) have a fourth level
obtainable under specific conditions, as described at the end of each
skill's section.

Level 4
To unlock this skill for purchase in the shop (10000 Gold) you must clear
the "Ultimate in Infinite" mission (無限の極み) in the Infinite Castle,
on 96F. You must clear it with somebody who already has Level 3 Eiketsu
no Gi. This mission is a true 'bonus' mission - the maps for each of the
5 stages are the kanji characters for "Sengoku Musou 2", and all enemies
drop money when hit. There are two generals guarding each floor, each
of whom drop 100 gold. Although you have to fight 2 generals at once,
they aren't in superpowered mode or anything, so compared to earlier
floors this mission should be a breeze. Upon clearing 100F you'll get a
message that you can purchase Level 4 Eiketsu no Gi in the shop. After
this point anybody who has Level 3 can purchase it (you only need to do
the Infinite Castle mission once).

Level 4
To unlock this skill for purchase in the shop (10000 Gold) you must clear
the "Secret of Success" mission (立身出世の志 ) in the Infinite Castle,
on 86F. You must clear it with somebody who already has Level 3 Risshi
no Sai. This mission involves you training a lowly Kinoshita Toukichirou
initially; eventually he becomes Hashiba Hideyoshi and then Toyotomi
Hideyoshi, with more generals each time. The missions themselves are quite
simple; simply defeat all of Hideyoshi's generals. Upon clearing 90F
you'll get a message that Level 4 Risshi no Sai is available in the
shop. After this point anybody who has Level 3 can purchase it (you only
need to do the Infinite Castle mission once).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
KORAN 虎乱
Makes the Musou Ougi more powerful.

Level 4
To unlock this skill for purchase in the shop (10000 Gold) you must clear
the "Secret Tournament" mission (裏御前仕合 開催!) in the Infinite Castle,
on 71F. You must clear it with somebody who already has Level 3 Senkin.
This is a tournament-style mission. On the first floor, you must defeat
three generic generals. On the next two floors, you must again defeat three
generic generals, but with rifle squads or ninjas trying to interfere. On
the fourth floor, you will have to fight 5 generic generals one at a time.
Then on the last floor, you'll need to fight 5 unique generals one at a
time. After defeating the last general, a special exhibition match will
start in which you can fight the last two generals you fought at the same
time. If you do manage to defeat them (no small task), you'll be rewarded
with three extra weapon boxes spawning in the center of the map. However,
you do not need to do the last fight to get Level 4 Senkin (you can just
go up the stairs). Once you reach the stairs, you'll get a message that
Level 4 Senkin is now purchasable in the shop. After this point anybody
who has Level 3 can purchase it (you only need to do the Infinite Castle
mission once).
