II. Overview of FAQ
This guide is created in order to assist Onimusha: Blade Warrior/
Onimusha Buraiden players in using the character called the Grunt,
one of the many characters that you can use in this side-scrolling brawler
game coming from the makers of the Onimusha series. From reading this
guide, players would know, understand and find the best tactics
that you can do when using this player.
III. Who is the Grunt?
The Grunt is a valiant ally of Samanosuke, Jubei and the other anti-Genma
heroes in the time of ancient Japan. Although he's an unnamed supporter of
the good guys, he's always ready to lay down his life in order to help them
win over the Genma demons. He provides armed assistance in fighting the
Genmas, even if they are impervious to ordinary weapons, unless if the
Grunt has an Oni Gauntlet in their arms.

VII. Background
Any personal information about the Grunt himself is unknown, but it's
widely known that he travels across the Japanese archipelago, giving
his services to any lord (sort of a semi-mercenary). These Grunts are the
core of any lord's vast army whether he conquers another rival lord or to
defend his territory. When the Genmas started to appear over Japan, they
began to provide aid to anti-Genma heroes like Samanosuke and Jubei in
the form of armed backup. Although many of them have laid their lives
against the soldiers of the underworld, they still played a key role
in thwarting Nobunaga's plans in conquering the entire country under
his rule.

XI. Techniques
Downward Thrust - Hold Down and Press Square when over downed enemy
* Very effective, learn to use it well.
Charge Attack - Hold Square and release it only when your weapon flashes
* Very handy when you need to get away from aggressive enemies.
Shoryuken - Press Up and Square together
* A good move to use when you're fighting against aerial baddies or when
you need room.
Kick - Press Triangle
* His kick's very useful to help break an enemy's guard.
Disarm - Hold R1 and press Triangle
* Good move to use after a kick move, initiate a combo with or to give
yourself time to get away from the bad guys.
Trip - Hold Down and press Square
* Use this when you have to escape from a corner or from a group of enemies.
Stab - Hold R1 and press Square
* This move's unique since you can use it to stab an enemy between planes
when they are close to each other.
Dash Attack - Press Forward, Forward and Square
* Try using it when the opponent thinks of letting his guard down.
Hadouken - Hold Square until weapon flashes, hold towards enemy and
release Square
* Make use of this move when you have to hit an enemy and escape from them,
not handy to use for combo.
Jump Attack - Press Square after jumping
* His jump move's handy to use when switching in between planes.
Flame Ball Slash - Hold R1 and press Triangle when in possession of a Fire
Tactical Orb
* This technique needs some time to activate. But if an enemy's in front
of you when you do this move, they're in big trouble as they're stunned
as the fireball cuts through them.
Tornado - Hold R1 and press Triangle when in possession of a Wind Tactical
Orb
* Make good use of this move when you're heavily surrounded by bad guys.
Lightning Combo - Hold R1 and press Triangle when in possession of a Thunder
Tactical Combo
* You have to worry about the enemy, who might try to make a last stand by
trying to block your move. Just to be sure, don't forget to whack the
enemy before unleashing this deadly and effective combo.
XII. COMBOS
Basic Combo - Square, Square, Square
* Even if it's slow, it's quite enough for the Grunt's standards to inflict some
high damage.
Charge Attack to Finisher Move (Easy combo)
- Hold Square until the weapon starts to flash, release Square, jump over the
enemy and hold Down and push the Square button again.
* The major advantage of this combo is that his charge attack can bowl over the
baddie, followed by a downward stabbing move.
Charged Stab to Finisher Move (Easy combo)
- Hold Square until the weapon starts to flash, hold R1 and release Square,
jump over the enemy, hold Down and push Square.
* When the Grunt uses his charged weapon, you can see a slight lunge in the
combo. Very handy if the bad guy is not paying any attention to you.
Charged Jump Attack to Disarm Move (Easy combo)
- Hold Square until weapon flashes, jump near enemy and release the Square
button when nearby, immediately hold R1 and push Triangle.
* Use this if you want to make your opponent not at ease when fighting you.
Kick Move to Tornado Technique (Easy combo)
WARNING
* Use this move when you have a Wind Tactical Orb in your possession
- Push Triangle, hold the R1 button and push Triangle again.
* The Kick move is not needed, but it's placed here for the sake of adding a
bit of damage to the enemy.
Charged Jump Attack to 2 Hit combo Shoryuken Interrupt to Finisher Move (Hard
Combo)
- Hold the Square button until weapon flashes, jump to enemy and release button
when enemy is near you. Then, press Square, Square, Up and Swquare, jump
over the fallen enemy, hold both Down and push the Square button.
* Any expert Grunt player should use this move very often.
This combo was submitted to me courtesy of
[email protected]
"Another good combo with grunt I found, was Disarm, Up and square, then down
stab. Or, to keep up the pressure, Go into the stabbing stance and push
square three times then kick. Even if they block the first three hits,
the kick will let down their guard and then repeat the combo."

XIV. Strategies
Real World Strategies:
- The Grunt, among all the characters in OBW/OB, is among the average guys
that you can play as. In order to compensate for his being average, make
quick use of aggressive combo/techniques on the enemy/enemies.
- Use hit and run attacks if your health is getting low or when you need to get
away from the bad guys.
- Remember to note that you may have a hard time to knock in some hits to make
a combo, since his moves will completely put the enemy down to the ground.
- Try to do massive damage with the tactical orbs, especially with the fire and
thunder orbs, up close to the enemy so that you can kill them right away.
- The best move that you can use is the trip or the disarm moves. They work
wonders.
- Use the Hadouken when you're facing enemies in a single plane.
- Make use of combos that would give heavy damage to the enemy. You'll need
them if you're facing off against the bosses in the game.
- The Grunt's dash attack is a good way to make an early surprise or a
finishing move.
Phantom Realm Strategies:
- From time to time, you'll be marked for death by waves of Genma enemies. So
make use of charged moves, such as Hadoukens, to make their numbers less of
a threat to you.
- You'll have to move a lot here, since standing skill to keep your guard or to
defend your position will make you a target for others who are not hesitating
to backstab you from the back.
- If you have to block a lot here, then do so. Make sure that your rear is safe
before doing any attempts to protect yourself from enemy attacks.
- Take advantage of combos that will target multiple enemies and bosses, such as
the Kick to Tornado combo. Try using the same combo, but replace the Tornado
Combo with a Flame Ball Slash combo, which is the best combo to use when the
enemies are in a single line.
- Keep switching planes when possible. You don't want to be overwhelmed by
by a lot of bad guys, since the Grunt doesn't have any pro-dizziness
techniques.
- Don't forget to use the weapon items that you can use after whacking open the
treasure chests. There are times that you can obtain twice of the same item
before unleashing a tactical orb attack or combo.
- During your fight with the triple Marcelluses, remember to keep them in a
single file and use the Kick to Flame Ball Slash combo in order to damage
them at once. Or use the Tornado move in place of the Flame Ball Slash
combo.
- If there are bosses (mid level/enemy) who are preparing to go after a chest,
use a charge move to knock them out of commision and get the newly found
item.
XV. Boss Tactics
Chapter 4 - Ozrick
In order to defeat him, get rid of the archer in a different plane. Start moving
from one plane to another while you whack chests and collect the goodies
inside. If the item turns out to be an offensive weapon or a tactical orb,
wait for Ozrick to enter the plane that you're in right now and unleash
it against him.
Chapter 8 - Gorgandantess
For starters, keep away from the guy. He'll pummel you if you're caught by him
personally. When the match begins, start running from him and whack the chests
for a weapon or an orb. If it's either one of them, then prepare to wait for
him and when he's near, unleash them to Gorgandantess for damage. Otherwise,
keep on running until you get one. If he tries to come near you, then attack
him back with a trip, disarm or the three hit combo.
Chapter 10 - Nobunaga
Make sure that you were able to obtain some Talismans. You'll need it in the
battle ahead. First thing that you have to remember is that you must always
stay away from Nobunaga (unless if he gets in your way), because he'll make
it a point to whack you down with his sword combos. Keep moving around and
don't let your guard down even for one second, Nobunaga can use this moment
in order to use a tactical orb combo at you or let his minions take a
beating at you. If you see a tactical orb, get ready your button finger in
a feud with the demon lord in your fight to obtain an orb. Unleash your
attacks with him by using either a charged move or a tactical orb combo
when you're next to Nobunaga himself.
