A. FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

A1. SPOILERS. How are spoilers handled?

This guide is 100% spoiler territory for the scenes themselves. Wording and
punctuation are exactly as displayed in-game. Stage direction is given, but
kept terse with minimal commentary.

The scenes catalogued are intimate, personal, and reveal little of the main
storyline, however.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A2. ABOUT COMPATIBILITY. What is the compatibility sidequest?

OKAGE: SHADOW KING includes a compatibility sidequest, which the gamer may
actively pursue. At the sidequest's conclusion, Ari (the game's lead
character) is gauged to have the best chemistry with another playable or
nonplayable character in the game. He receives a clue to where he might
find the compatibility gift he's earned. Retrieving the gift is accompanied
by an exchange -- brief, lengthy, or somewhere in between.

For complete details, please read the "Compatibility Gifts" section of the
"Sidequests" addendum in the author's FAQ & Walkthrough, found at:

  http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/game/471237.html

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A3. ABOUT THE GIFTS. How do I go about getting...?

Half of the compatibility gifts are obtained in straightforward fashion:
Favor your chosen target in all responses, and when no response favors that
character, pick a response favoring no one.

The remaining three compatibility candidates are a little trickier. You'll
find strategies and known pitfalls included in the "Compatibility Gifts"
section of the author's FAQ & Walkthrough, posted at:

  http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/game/471237.html

Details about the gifts themselves may also be found in that guide.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A4. EXPECTATIONS. What can I expect from the guide?

This guide documents the scenes wherein Ari receives the compatibility gift
he's earned. Nothing more, nothing less.

Presumably, you've played the game through at least once. The guide is not
geared toward those who are new to OKAGE.

Perhaps you're only curious, or you wish to know whether a particular scene
is worth your time and another play-through. Maybe you like picking a
direction at the start of a new game. Or maybe you're a serious roleplayer
looking for another angle for its own enjoyment. This guide is for you.

The scene scripts are exact and all six were obtained first-hand by the
author via normal gameplay. Particular attention has been paid to spelling,
capitalization, and punctuation. Stage direction is given to provide some
context, but kept succinct and without extraneous commentary.

===========================================================================
B. THE SCENE SCRIPTS

Before beginning, here's a quick explanation of the abbreviations and other
conventions used in this document.

V.O.: Voice Over
[Choose]: Ari must make a choice between the three responses presented.
<Stage direction>: Action taken on-screen; commentary.

For the purpose of this guide and consistency's sake, Fortune Teller No. 1
in the Tenel Village Inn was consulted for each of the final readings in
the Compatibility Gift sidequest. The fortune tellers in Madril and Rashelo
may word their readings slightly differently.

The final reading begins the same for each of the six compatibility gifts.

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: Ah, it's come to me! You are matched best with...
Whoa!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
B1. ARI'S FATHER

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: With your father. Huh, boring. Of course your father
loves you.

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: Well, it won't hurt to go back home for a change to
say hello, will it?

<Ari leaves Tenel, dashes home, and finds his father in the basement.>

FATHER: Oh, my son! I heard something amazing from the fortune teller in
the village.

FATHER: You and I have the best chemistry in the world!

FATHER: Wow, being popular is tough!

FATHER: So, Now remember, I gave you my secret treasure!

FATHER: Make sure to use it effectively!

<Ari acquired "A of Spades"!>

-----

Just dialogue. No camera shifts or drama of any sort. Boring indeed.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
B2. EVIL KING STAN

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: With the Evil King Stan! Nooooo! keep away from me!

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: ...Oh? I still see more.

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: Let's see... It says "If you want interesting
training, stay at the hotel"...

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: Hmmm, I wonder what it means...

<Ari leaves Tenel, hastens to Madril, and checks into the Inn for a good
night's rest. Ari checks his stats and then steps out of the Inn.>

<Stan pops up.>

STAN: By the way, you have become more like one deserving to be my slave.

STAN: You must find a way to thank me for educating you so well.

<James materializes before Ari and Stan.>

JAMES: You are too easy on him master! A noble Evil King shouldn't be
satisfied with such behavior!

<The camera pushes in on Stan.>

STAN: Hmm, James!

<The camera pans to James.>

JAMES: Huh. From my, James' point of view, Ari is still far from perfect.

JAMES: In order to raise him to be a decent evil slave, you have to
discipline him more strictly!

JAMES: Harder! And more serious!

<The camera pans to Stan.>

STAN: Hmm... You're right, James. Maybe, my slave needs special training.

<The camera pans back to James.>

JAMES: Ha ha ha! Please leave it on me! I, James knew this would happen and
have prepared a special program!

JAMES: Follow me this way please! Haah!

<James stalks off, stage right, and dematerializes. Ari chases after James
and the scene fades to black.>

<Fade up on the Rumille Plains, cue music. They stand on the west bank of
the river's headwater, with James nearest the waterfall, facing Ari and
Stan.>

JAMES: Now, let's practice!

<The camera pans around to Ari and zooms in on Stan.>

STAN: James, what are you planning to do to my slave in such a place?

<The camera pans back to James for a close-up.>

JAMES: Ha ha ha... It's called "Waterfall Endurance Practice"!

<The camera zooms out, POV behind Stan, to a master shot showing the
waterfall cascading behind James.>

JAMES: Now, Ari! Step into the waterfall.

<The camera zooms in a little closer on the trio, POV over Stan's left
shoulder and centered on James, facing the camera.>

JAMES: Come on, please. The water is nice and chilly!

<The camera pans around to Ari.>

ARI: [Choose]
1. I don't want to.
2. No way!
3. I don't have my shower cap!

<Note. Pick any answer; which makes no difference.>

<The camera pans back to James.>

JAMES: Well, well? Mr. Ari, why do you refuse like that?

<The camera pans, right to left.>

ARI: [Choose]
1. It looks cold.
2. It looks hard.
3. I'll die.

<Note. Pick any answer; which makes no difference.>

<The camera pushes in on James for an extreme close-up.>

JAMES: No good, Mr. Ari.

JAMES: You shouldn't have the word "can't" in your dictionary as a servant
of evil!

<The camera pulls back for a two-shot, James right and Ari left.>

JAMES: One way or another, you're going to have to do it! Come on! Come on!

<Ari backs away hurriedly, then turns and runs. James chases after him.>

<Fade to black.>

<The scene resolves inside a room of the Madril Inn. Cue Madril theme. Ari
lies abed, eyes closed, covers under his chin. Stan faces James across the
sick bed.>

STAN: James! You, look! Because of your special training, my slave has
become sick!

JAMES: That's not good. Then please take this James' special "Butler's Dark
Drug"...

<James approaches the bed.>

JAMES: Come on, don't hesitate. Drink it up!

NO ONE: Ari was forced to take suspicious medicine!

NO ONE: Ari's ability was suspiciously upgraded!

<Note. Normal dialogue screens, but "name" is blank.>

JAMES: Ha ha ha ha! Look at this! This is the result of your training!

STAN: Um, I think it's due to the drug... Besides, what purpose did the
training have?

JAMES: Huh? Well, I found it in a human's book. I have no idea what its
purpose was.

JAMES: Oh? Ari? Are you okay, Ari?? Heey...

<Scene dims and voiceover text appears.>

NARRATOR [V.O.]: And so...

NARRATOR [V.O.]: Due to the suspicious drug and a cold, the unfortunate boy
was in bed for several days...

<Fade to black.>

---

Control returns with Ari standing outside the Madril Inn. Checking his
stats reveals that AP and DP have increased, +5 each.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
B3. HERO ROSALYN

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: The Hero Rosalyn with her parasol! Hey, you, nice
going!! Way to go!

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: ...Oh? It's telling me more.

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: Let's see... "When love deepens between the Hero,
something shall happen", it tells me....

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: Hmmmm, I wonder what it means....

<Ari makes haste for Triste, where Rosalyn stands beside the merchant. He
speaks with her.>

<Brief close-up on Rosalyn. She turns and faces Ari.>

ROSALYN: Oh Ari, sorry about that. We were supposed to whiz through this
place and move on, huh?

ARI: [Choose]
1. Anything the matter?
2. Does that person bug you?
3. Yep. Sure were.

<If 1 is selected...>

ROSALYN: Huh? Uhm, no. Nothing, really...

<If 2 is selected...>

ROSALYN: Huh? What are you talking about? There's nobody here. Don't scare
me like that. Phew!

HOPELESS MERCHANT: ....

<If 3 is selected...>

ROSALYN: Oh, you're always quiet aren't you?

<The scene continues...>

<Camera pans around to show the building's sign.>

ROSALYN: This building.... It seems to be a Hero's Club building.

ROSALYN: How'd it wind up here? Weird...

<Camera pans high overhead, slowly showing the town.>

ROSALYN: I wonder what this big town is doing here? It's deserted but
totally intact.

ROSALYN: As if it were a stage from a play.....

<Close-up on Rosalyn in profile.>

ROSALYN: ....

<Camera pans to a tight two-shot as she turns to face Ari.>

ROSALYN: Oh well. By the way, Ari, you've become really tough.

ARI: [Choose]
1. I did go through a lot.
2. Oh no, I'm still weak.
3. Tough as nails!

<Camera pans a little to face Rosalyn.>

<If 1 is selected...>

ROSALYN: You betcha, you did!

<If 2 is selected...>

ROSALYN: Lose the loser mentality, 'kay?

<If 3 is selected...>

ROSALYN: .... I know, that part of you will never change...

<The scene continues...>

<Camera pans around the pair.>

ROSALYN: But now you can slay ghosts like a pro! You've become really
strong.

ROSALYN: I have to keep doing my best just so you don't despise me for
being weak, Ari.

<Camera pans around them a little further.>

ARI: [Choose]
1. That would never happen.
2. Keep it up.
3. You'll have to try harder.

<Note. Pick any answer; which makes no difference.>

<Camera zooms in for a close-up on Rosalyn.>

ROSALYN: Hah.

<She turns away from Ari.>

ROSALYN: But still, I do have an inferiority complex sometimes towards you,
Ari.

<She takes a few steps away from Ari.>

ROSALYN: I acquired the Hero's title because I wanted to live up to the
ideal of a good hero.

ROSALYN: To keep evil and its disciples from destroying the world with its
evil designs.

ROSALYN: .... Heh. It's funny when you hear yourself say things like that.

<Camera pans around for a two-shot.>

ARI: [Choose]
1. No, not at all
2. Ha ha ha.
3. There's nothing funny about justice.

<Note. Pick any answer; which makes no difference.>

<Rosalyn again faces Ari.>

ROSALYN: Anyway, I figured if I were to become a hero, then from that
moment on, I'd be good.

ROSALYN: That even if I wasn't good, I'd become so by becoming a hero.

ROSALYN: At least that's how I thought it'd be.

ROSALYN: But after having become a hero and looking back, there's something
bugging me.

<Camera pans for a two-shot of Rosalyn and the merchant.>

ROSALYN: Lately, I noticed I've been putting "being a hero" as my top
priority too often.

<Camera pans a little more.>

ROSALYN: Somehow, I have come to assume that it is the same as being
good...

ROSALYN: twisting the logic to mean I am good as long as I am a "hero".

ROSALYN: "Becoming a hero to be good" "Being good as long as I'm a hero"
These are two very different things.

<Camera zooms in on the merchant.>

HOPELESS MERCHANT: ....

<Camera pulls back for a three-shot.>

ROSALYN: Ari, you're not a hero and frankly, you're nobody in particular.

ROSALYN: But you fight better than any of those heroes around.

ROSALYN: You're involved in bigger tasks than anybody else and you just go
for it, y'know? No questions, no titles.

<Rosalyn turns a little, inadvertently toward the merchant.>

ROSALYN: Having seen you do this has made me rethink things. Especially
when I see a bureaucratic building like this.

<She faces Ari again.>

ROSALYN: So Ari, I want to stay with you for a while and see what you have
inside you.

<She walks right up to him, towering over the boy.>

ROSALYN: What you have...it's really something.

ARI: [Choose]
1. Probably nothing, really.
2. That'd be my heart, stomach, liver...
3. Yes, I agree.

<If 1 is selected...>

ROSALYN: Even if you're not aware of it, Ari, I will find out what it is.

<If 2 is selected...>

ROSALYN: That's not what I mean!

<If 3 is selected, Rosalyn makes no added comment.>

<The scene continues...>

<Camera pans around for a close-up on Rosalyn.>

ROSALYN: Yes. And after I find that out, I'd like to think and find out
what's inside me.

ROSALYN: I'll see you later.

<She turns and starts down the sidestreet.>

HOPELESS MERCHANT: Ahhhh! I think I've fallen in love with ya, honey! Take
this!

<Rosalyn turns, alarmed, toward the merchant she can't see.>

ROSALYN: Yikes! Wha-? What? Something was just pushed against me. Huh? What
is this?

<Rosalyn has acquired "Gallant Rapier"!>

<Trivia. This is the only time someone other than Ari acquires something.>

<She continues down the sidestreet, puzzled.>

ROSALYN: ????? .... Hmmmm. It's a mystery...

<The scene ends. Ari speaks with the merchant.>

HOPELESS MERCHANT: Whoa. That lady's speech was something.

HOPELESS MERCHANT: I was really impressed inspite of myself.

HOPELESS MERCHANT: I couldn't help myself. I just had to give her one
little present.

HOPELESS MERCHANT: I'm sure she'd thank me if she could see me.
Oh, well...

HOPELESS MERCHANT: All these years of being told my shadow was thin, my
business failing and now winding up here. (Sigh)

HOPELESS MERCHANT: But I should try again, right?

-----

The merchant's last sentiments are repeated from then on whenever he's
visited.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
B4. JULIA

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: With your childhood friend Julia! Hmmm, even though
you got dumped once, you shouldn't give up, alright?

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: How about going to see this girl? Something good
might happen.

<Ari steps out of the Inn and speaks with Julia.>

<They face each other.>

JULIA: Oh, Ari....

<She turns her back to him.>

JULIA: ...

JULIA: You and I...we have the best chemistry between us. The fortune
teller was saying this.

JULIA: What a surprise, huh.

<She turns back to face him.>

JULIA: That's a surprise, isn't it?

ARI: [Choose]
1. Yes, it is.
2. A surprise, indeed.
3. I'm flabbergasted!

<Note. Pick any answer; which makes no difference.>

<She turns away.>

JULIA: I know... It came as a surprise for me, too...

<She takes a few steps away.>

JULIA: But it'd be sad to let it end like this... What do you think...?

<She faces him.>

JULIA: Uh, Ari, you're becoming more and more popular every day, right?

JULIA: That really bugs me for some reason...

JULIA: But me complaining isn't going to accomplish anything. So...um...

<She walks up to him.>

JULIA: My brother sent me this while he was traveling.

JULIA: I think he sent it to me just to show off, though. He's like that.

JULIA: Now it's become a memento of him for me.

JULIA: Now it's a memento for today, learning that we have the best
chemistry.

<She turns away, then faces him again.>

JULIA: You're still not my type yet, but still... Will you please accept
this?

ARI: [Choose]
1. Thank you, Julia.
2. I'll treasure it
3. Uh...thanks?

<If 1 or 2 is selected...>

JULIA: But that doesn't mean you're forgiven, Ari.... Hmph! See ya.

<Or, if 3 is selected...>

JULIA: I like the way you're wishy washy like that. But that doesn't mean
you're forgiven.... Hmph! See ya.

<Ari has acquired "Owl's Amulet"!>

-----

Control returns with Ari standing outside the Inn.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
B5. MYSTERIOUS WOMAN

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: With a mysterious woman. Who could this mysterious
woman be? Hmmm, it's a mystery.

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: But according to this, something good's going to
happen if you go see this mysterious woman.

<Ari leaves Tenel, battles his way south through Tenel Forest, and finds
the red-haired Mysterious Woman beyond the second bridge.>

MYSTERIOUS WOMAN: I am a mysterious woman. A woeful woman of tragedy living
with a bitter fate.

ARI: [Choose]
1. Oh really.
2. Good-bye then.
3. Wow...heavy.

<Note. Pick any answer; which makes no difference.>

MYSTERIOUS WOMAN: Stop! I am the femme fatale.

MYSTERIOUS WOMAN: Even though we are soul mates, I cannot accept your love!

ARI: [Choose]
1. Excuse me?
2. Umm, good-bye.
3. Can you not hear my breaking heart!?

<Note. Pick any answer; which makes no difference.>

MYSTERIOUS WOMAN: Oh! But that magical night... Your sweet whisper...

ARI: [Choose]
1. I don't remember that...
2. Good-bye anyway.
3. Wish I could remember that...

<Note. Pick any answer; which makes no difference.>

MYSTERIOUS WOMAN: Please take this, as my farewell gift! Oh!

<Ari acquired "Daymare Ring"!>

-----

Just dialogue and melodrama.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
B6. PRINCESS MARLENE

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: Wha-? Wow, with Princess Marlene! This is something,
isn't it?

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: ...Oh? It's telling me more.

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: Let's see... "A Princess' love shall fall in the
dream and a being from the dark side shall come"

FORTUNE TELLER NO. 1: Hmmmm, I wonder what it means....

<Ari rushes off to Rashelo and Rests at the Inn. The scene shifts to a
guestroom with two beds and Ari asleep nearest the window.>

<James materializes at the foot of Ari's bed.>

FAMILIAR VOICE: Tsk. It seems that unfortunate evil servant is sleeping
well.

FAMILIAR VOICE: An Evil Butler serving an Evil King is a disguise to avoid
public notice....

FAMILIAR VOICE: My true calling is quite different...

FAMILIAR VOICE: I sneakily bring gifts to people's homes in the night. They
call me "Santa of the Shadows"!

FAMILIAR VOICE: My presents are wrapped in shimmering paper and sparkling
bows. Please accept them...

<James dematerializes.>

<Against a black backdrop, Marlene appears, her back to the camera, and the
music box plays.>

GIRL'S VOICE: Ari... Ari...

GIRL'S VOICE: What's taking you so long? Come help me, quickly! What an
unreliable servant you are.

GIRL'S VOICE: Ari... I believed in you...

GIRL'S VOICE: Ari... Ari...

<The boy awakens in the guestroom, standing between the two beds.>

NO ONE: At the head of the bed neatly folded clothes are laid....

<Note. Normal dialogue screen, but "name" is blank.>

<Ari acquired "Reunion Outfit"!>

-----

Control returns with Ari standing between the two beds.

C2. FAQ INFO

About this FAQ. While OKAGE retains a high replay value, few gamers obtain
every compatibility gift or have the chance to view the scenes accompanying
each gift. No script can convey the full impact of a scene, ripped from its
in-game context, and this guide's aim is to provide a basis from which a
gamer can select the compatibility gift he or she next wishes to pursue.
