[I] \ Introduction
--------\======================================================================
The purpose of this FAQ is to help you better understand ruststones. I have
seen a lot of topics on the GameFAQs message boards about ruststones in the
past, I hope this helps stem the tide somewhat. I have also seen many people
ask about them online. Well, in this FAQ I am going to attempt to cover every-
thing about them.
My Monster Hunter online name is Korlic, I play on the NA server. If you see
me and have a question ask me. I will help if I'm not too busy. I hope that you
find the answers that you are looking for. Now on to the FAQ!
------\========================================================================
[II] \ About Ruststones
--------\======================================================================
A Ruststone is an item in Monster Hunter, they can be found both online and
offline. To obtain a ruststone all you have to do is mine a certain location
and you will have a small chance of receiving one. The purpose of a ruststone
is to allow you to receive rusted weapons. The weapons that you can acquire by
following the weapon path of these ruststones are quite powerful. To be able
to receive a rusted weapon, the ruststone must first be polished. To polish a
ruststone, you must first have it in your inventory, then bring it to the
weapon/armor smith in the armory online, or to the weapon/armor smith in the
village offline.
Once you speak to the smith go to create a weapon, the only material you need
is the ruststone itself. To polish a ruststone it costs 1000 zenni. If you
move to the last page of the available weapons to be made, you should notice
a weapon listed with a number of question marks, that is the ruststone. Go
through the same process that you would to create a new weapon and once the
ruststone is polished you will be able to see what the ruststone was. You do
not always receive a rusted weapon for polishing your ruststones, you can
receive a number of different weapons. There is a small chance that when you
polish one, it will turn out to be a rusted weapon.
There are five different types of ruststones, one for each weapon type(exclu-
ding dual swords). You can only hold one ruststone of each type in your inven-
tory at one time, so sometimes when you mine a ruststone you may receive the
message that you have too many in your inventory. This simply means that you
have mined a duplicate type of a ruststone that is currently in your
inventory. So, you can hold a maximum of five ruststones in your inventory.
You can hold as many as you have the room for in your item box. It is quite
expensive to upgrade the rusted weapon to its final form, it also requires a
lot of earth crystals. To upgrade either rusted lance, great sword, sword and
shield, or a hammer to its final form you need 96,000z and 120 Earth Crystals.
For the Demonlock bowgun, you need 17,800z to get it up to Mod 5
When a Ruststone is a certain type it will always give you that type of
weapon. For example if your ruststone gives you a weapon from the lance
weapon class, if you reset the game and try again it will still give you a
lance type weapon. Ruststones can only be obtained online once you reach
HR(Hunter Rank)13, but there still is a way to get them offline which will
be explained in the next section.
------\========================================================================
[III] \ Where To Find Ruststones
--------\======================================================================
You obtain ruststones the same way you would obtain iron ore, earth crystals,
Dragonite ore etc. You have to find a mining spot and use a pickaxe to mine
it. Not all of the mining spots that you come across will give you a chance
to get a ruststone though. When you mine a ruststone you will hear a small tune
and the ruststone will be placed in your inventory. You can also receive
ruststones for completing the "A Giant Dragon Invades" quest.
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
- ONLINE (HR 13+)
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
All of these mining spots have a small chance that you will obtain a ruststone
upon mining it. I have heard from people that there's a 1% chance of obtaining
one. This doesn't seem to be the case because ruststones are mined much
too frequently. The volcano is the best spot to go looking for them. There may
be more, but these are all the places that I have managed to find ruststones:
O==================O=========================================================O
| - ZONE - | - LOCATION - |
O==================O=========================================================O
| Jungle | The three mining spots in Area 4. |
| | The one mining spot in Area 10. |
| | The hidden mining spot in Area 9. It is on the side of |
| | the mountain by the entrance to the area. |
|------------------+---------------------------------------------------------|
| Desert | The three mining spots in Area 6. |
| | |
| | |
|------------------+---------------------------------------------------------|
| Swamp | The mining spot in Area 11. |
| | The mining spot in Area 7. |
| | The two mining spots in Area 8. |
|------------------+---------------------------------------------------------|
| Volcano | The mining spot in Area 3. |
| | The mining spot in Area 4. |
| | The three mining spots in Area 8. |
o------------------o---------------------------------------------------------o
Ruststones can be mined pre-HR13, and they can also be received as a reward
by completing the HR12 Lao-Shan Lung urgent quest, as I mentioned above. You
can only mine them at the volcano zone in area 8, much like you would offline
to obtain a ruststone. Thanks to ColSonders for pointing that out. The
Earliest quest that is in the volcano that you have access to is the 2 star
Basarios quest, so you can actually get a ruststone at a fairly early level,
even by playing only offline.
Some additional information provided by Vangor:
"Online Ruststones for HR13+ can be mined at almost any location, I've
yet to find one which does not yield them. As well, at HR13+, it has
perhaps a 5-9% chance of dropping, note that because you are mining
multiple times, perhaps three different locations about four times
each on a low end, you actually have about a total of a 60+% chance of
getting one, so getting two or more a run is not uncommon. Firestones
are actually around this 1% chance people think of, even offline
Rustsones are not this low."
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
- OFFLINE
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
Yes, it is possible to find ruststones offline. I am sure of this because
I have found one myself. They can only be found in Area 8 of the Volcano zone.
Fulkth adds this:
"Just wanted to state that ruststones can be found in 2 sections in 8, not
just the mining location by the entrance. The second location for a
ruststone is the one closest to the end, near the powderstone rocks. I did a
test with the offline powderstone quest 30 times, and my results were: 8
ruststones near the entrance, 2 near the end, so it seems that the mining
spot near the entrance has a higher chance."
An additional way to obtain ruststones offline is by completing the urgent
mission "Handle with Care."
------\========================================================================
[IV] \ Polishing Ruststones
--------\======================================================================
If you don't know how to polish ruststones look in the About Ruststones section
for an explanation. I'll say it again, you will not always receive a rusted
weapon for polishing a ruststone. There a few different weapons that you
can obtain from certain ruststones, none of them are worth anything besides
the rusted ones. If you do get a non-rusted weapon(surely you will), sell it
and you can usually make a small profit over the 1000z that you spent to polish
it.
One way to guarantee that you get a rusted weapon is to polish your ruststones
offline. If you don't get a rusted weapon there is a way to be able to get
another chance at a rusted. Remember that a ruststone is always the same weapon
type. The weapon type is predetermined for you, which actually makes it easier
for you to get the rusted weapon that you want, by limiting the possibilities.
Sayling of the Fugazi Clan provided this information, which will make it
easier for you to find out which ruststone is which:
"When the stones are in your storage box, and the box has been
auto-sorted, they are stored in the following order (starting at the
top and going from left to right to the last one):
Bowgun
Great Sword
Hammer
Sword & Shield
Lance
Once you have taken them out of the box and gone to the armory, going
to create a weapon will have the possible weapons listed in the
following order:
Great Sword
Hammer
Lance
Sword & Shield
Bowgun
Knowing this makes it far easier to work out which stone you want to
use in order to get the weapon you are looking for. "
Some people consider going offline, polishing and then resetting a method of
cheating, or exploiting the system. I don't use this method myself, I prefer to
just polish them online and hope that I get a rusted weapon, but I will include
this for those of you who wish to use it.
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
- THE OFFLINE METHOD
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
The first thing you need to do is find a ruststone, you need to make sure that
it is a ruststone of the weapon type that you are looking for. Ruststones are
quite easy to come by actually, they are most commonly found in the volcano
level area 8. Once you have one or more go offline and polish it to see if
it is the weapon type that you want.
If you polish a ruststone and it isn't a rusted weapon you cannot just simply
reset the game and try again, if you do this it will be the exact same weapon
that you had gotten before. To change the status of the stone, reload the game
data that you tried to polish the stone on and go on a mission. Do not polish
the stone before going on this mission. Go on an easy mission such as the one
star combining items quest (with 2 potions in your inventory) or another easy
one. You must complete the quest to change the status of the stones! Once it
is done, when you are prompted to save press yes. When you arrive back in town
try your luck again and polish the stone.
If it isn't a rusted weapon again, do the same thing. Reload your save, go on
a quest, save when prompted, and then try and polish it again. Continue doing
this until when you polish it, it turns out to be a rusted weapon. Don't worry
if you have been trying for a long time and it still isn't rusted, you will
get one eventually! I have tested this and it does indeed work.
1 - Obtain ruststone(s).
2 - Go to the village(Offline mode).
3 - Polish ruststone.
4 - If it isn't a rusted weapon, reload your data.
**Do not polish the ruststone yet!**
5 - Get an easy quest from the village elder and set out.
Example of an easy quest, the 1 star Basics: Combining Items. Start the
quest with two potions in your inventory.
6 - Complete the quest.
7 - Save game when prompted.
8 - Polish ruststone.
9 - If the outcome isn't a rusted weapon, go back to step 4.
To give yourself a better chance of getting a rusted weapon, try to find more
ruststones of the weapon type that you are looking for. Though you can't have
them all out in your inventory at the same time, you can polish one then move
back to the box and polish the others.

- ADDITIONAL METHODS
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
I will list additional information about polishing ruststones here. These are
unproven information and theories, but I will include them for those of you
who wish to try. If you have anything that you would like to add, please
send it to me. Note that I haven't tested any of these myself.
This was provided by Vangor:
"It should be noted that while one can 'acquire' one via abandoning
quests, this is actually a different attempt to use the system and
only plays on its low level of randomness, in other words, chances are
this will do nothing for you, and if you want a specific weapon, then
you will be sore when another weapon becomes Rusted. The best way is
the method I'll explain below, both in gaining Ruststones, making Rusted
Weapons, and gathering Earth Crystals to get...whatever, since chances
are you do not have 120 Earth Crystals on hand.
Basarios Offline is generally one of the easiest ways to do this. If
you can find others to help, then Online, even HR13+, may not be as
bad, but, actual creation is difficult without being offline.
Basically from the start, run towards Volcano 8 and begin mining the
first area. If you get a Ruststone, then keep playing, if you do not and
get less than 3 Earth Crystals, I would abandon. If you do get around
3 Earth Crystals, continue mining, if this number doesn't go to about
5 or 6, depending on how quickly you can kill Bas, 10 or below, 5, 11
or above, 6, then abandon.
Rather than go through this numbing concept of Ruststones with numbers,
weapon types, etc., the simplest way to do this is gather, check,
reset, and run the Basarios again to completion. What this will do is
move the Rusted Weapon number up one, all you need to realize is that
it is getting closer to being one of your weapons. If you find a
Rusted Weapon not of the type you want, then note where that was and
where the weapon type you want is,
Note: To make it easy to identify them, reset, take them out, make
them again if you aren't absolutely sure of their placement, which you
probably won't be, now note which ones were it, reset again, open up
two slots in your vault wherever, and place in the weapon type and
then the rusted weapon stone. Do not sort, and now they will sit by
themselves in order for you.
Reset, and run a fast mission, like first monster hunt, or finding raw
meat if you have some on you. Now, take out the weapon type first,
then the Rusted Weapon immediately behind it. The weapon ahead of it
should now be a Rusted Weapon, the one behind it, just another regular
weapon."
This was written by Topknot of the Fugazi Clan :
"Ok... each ruststone is already a set weapon. You may notice that
some stones cannot be picked up due to no more room for that
particular item... this means both stones are the same weapon, sword
for example.
When you take your stones to be polished, they will either make a
rusted weapon or a regular weapon depending on the weapon type the
stone is. I.E a hammer ruststone will make either rusted hammer or a
regular hammer. Rusted are the types we want.
To do this, make sure your offline and have a few stones in your
chest. It can be done with one but may take a while. For the purposes
of this guide I'll assume that you have say 10 stones in your chest.
You should only be able to pick up 5 stones out of your 10 at any one
time, a hammer stone, lance, bowgun, short sword, and great sword
stone. You wont know what each one is until you polish them and there's
no way of checking beforehand so don't worry about that yet.
Take your 5 stones to the armor/weapon creation shop and get them
polished, if none are rusted, go pick up the other 5 stones in your
chest and polish those as well. PAY ATTENTION TO WHICH POLISH MAKES
WHICH WEAPON! E.g., the first in the list is a great sword, then its a
lance I think, then hammer, then short sword, then bowgun
Lets say for instance that on the 5th attempt it creates a rusted
weapon, so the first 4 make regular and the 5th makes a rusted weapon.
Quit your game without saving and reload, go back to offline mode
again, select the first raw meat quest (collect 2 raw meats) and
complete that 4 times. Do not save at any time throughout.
When you've done it the 4th time, go get 5 of your ruststones and take
them to be polished. You will find the first stone creates a rusted
weapon. Bingo.. now you can save. If you paid attention to which
stones give what you can then choose beforehand which rusted weapon
you want to create from great sword, hammer, lance, and bowgun.
The same principle works no matter how many stones you have... say you
have 10 and the 8th one makes a rusted weapon, quit, do 7 quests and
the first time you polish will make a rusted weapon. Only have 2 stones
and neither make rusted weapon, do a quest and try again until it makes
a rusted weapon. If you have 20 stones and the 19th makes a rusted weapon,
do 18 quests and retry polishing.
The way it works is as follows: The chance of making a rusted weapon
is random, the number order starts at 30 though, so the most
quests/stones you need to have/do is 29. For every successful quest
you complete, it reduces the number by one. Hence if it takes 10
stones to make a rusty weapon, do 9 quests to drop the number down to 1."
