Overview
This faq contains a summary of the experience requirements for different
characters to level up, as well as new abilities gained and changes in
attributes. It also explains the consequences of your start-of-game decisions
on final attribute values and rates of experience gain.

Sora’s Stats at Level 1 and Level 100 Based on Initial Attribute Choices

As you can see from the table below, this choice has minimal effects on
strength, AP, and defense at high levels-- but the differences in MP and number
of item slots are something to think about. If you intend to do a straight-
forward play-through of the game without maxing stats, you’ll probably be
happiest strengthening the shield (which attribute you weaken is not
particularly important). This is mostly because of getting Second Chance early
in the game—-Second Chance is a major life-saver for boss fights (if you have
more than 1 hit point and receive a terminal hit, you are left alive with 1 hp
instead). You’ll also get more synth items over the course of the main game due
to Lucky Strike. For the end-game, you’ll have max item slots, 8. However,
since you can pretty easily play through the game without ever manually using
an item in battle, this is of limited usefulness.
If you can stand a little extra difficulty while playing through the game and
intend to max out your character at end-game, take the staff for the extra 2
mp (things will only be slightly harder during the main game). Note that the
power of your magic is based on your maximum MP, so the staff will make you
a better magic user. The sword is not recommended as a specialty unless you
seek a more challenging gaming experience.

Sora’s max stats are dependent on your possession of sufficient motivation to
get loads of Power Up, AP Up, and Defense Up items via synthesis. The maximum
individual stat values are 111 for HP (equip 3 Gaia bangles), 18 for MP
(strengthen staff at character creation; use +2 MP keyblade; equip 3 Atlas
Armlets), and 100 for Strength, Defense, and AP.
Initial Choices to Get Various Rates of Level Up for Sora

Depending on how you answer Tidus, Wakka, and Selphie, you can chose to make
the game easier for yourself up to level 40, at the expense of an increase in
difficulty starting around level 40 (the “leave at dawn” option) or harder for
yourself up to level 40, but requiring less experience for level ups above
level 40 (the “start at night” option). For example, the number of experience
points that will get you to level 70 on dusk will only get you to level 65 on
dawn. The dusk option will require you to get about 100,000 (11%) less
experience points to achieve level 100 than the dawn option.
