01. INTRODUCTION [INTR]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Hello there, my name is Keith McMullen. This is the first FAQ/Walkthrough I
have written in a long time, although it's not my first. Many years ago I had
written several FAQs for GameFAQs, it was around that time that many things
about the website had changed, much of which I didn't agree with. So as some
sort of lame "protest" I took down my FAQs and never put them back up. Looking
back on it it was rather stupid, as I had put a lot of work into writing those
FAQs and they had helped a great deal of people, but what's done is done. My
only regret is I did not create a backup of those files, so now they are
forever gone. Oh well.
So out of sheer boredom I have decided to come back to writing. Or at least to
write this FAQ, who knows if I'll have it in me to keep going after this is
finally done. I had picked up Kessen II back when the game came out many years
ago, beat it, and let it collect dust on my shelf along with many other PS2
games. After many years of not playing I decided to pick up this game again
and remember why I had bought it all those years ago. And it didn't take me
long to remember. Sort of a strategy, action, sci fi and history game all
rolled into one, this game isn't for everyone. But if you're a fan of Koei's
"Dynasty Warriors" franchise, or the Three Kingdoms era in general, you'll
probably enjoy this game.
If you have any questions or comments, send me an email at:
kmfx24 [at] yahoo [dot] com
Please include the words "Kessen II" in the title of the email because I get a
lot of (junk) email and this way I can easily sort through it and I won't
overlook your email. I'll try to respond as promptly as possible, but take into
consideration the fact that I usually don't check my email every day. Feel
free to contribute any criticism or information that I don't have listed. There
are still some things I don't know about the mechanics of this game, so if
you know something I don't just shoot me an email and if I include it in this
guide I'll give you credit.

02. VERSION HISTORY [VRHX]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Version 1.2 (02/26/2012) - Revised the formatting a bit. Also changed my stance
on posting this guide on other website other than GameFAQs, -> PLEASE READ
UPDATED LEGAL INFO! <-
Version 1.1 (09/04/2011) - Fixed a whole bunch of spelling mistakes. I really
need to remember to spell check these guides before submitting them for the
first time...
Version 1.0 (07/29/2011) - Done! Finished the guide, all sections are (as of
right now) complete. Any updates from here on will be any kind of spelling/
grammar editing, or if I get any kind of contributions they will be added as
well. As of right now I don't see any major new sections being added in the
near future. I might be eventually adding some additional information on
the expert difficulty setting, but (if I do) it won't be for a while.

03. CONTROLS [CNTR]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Depending on what type of screen you're on, what each button on the controller
does differs. I'll break down what each button does on each separate screen,
it doesn't take very long to get the hang of things.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Menu Screens/Non battle screens
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Pretty simply these are screens that have no fighting going on. The controls
are as follows:
Directional pad: Moves the cursor to a desired option.
Triangle: Cancel a selection.
Square: Shows either your army information or if you're in the war council
screen, it will show the battle map.
X: Select.
Circle: Sort of a "review" button; it will go over what the battle plan is for
the officer who is currently selected.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Army screen
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
This is the screen that shows sort of an overview of the army of whatever
general you have selected. The controls are as follows:
Directional pad: When your army is marching you can control their direction
via the directional pad. When you have engaged in battle with an enemy, you
can use the directional pad to select which officer you wish to control.
Left analog/L3 button: Controls the direction of your army when marching.
Pressing down (L3) turns radar on or off.
Right analog/R3 button: Controls the camera. Pressing down (R3) returns the
camera to the center.
Start: Pause/skip FMV.
L2: Turn on/off enemy indicator (colored diamond appears over each armies head,
the color of the diamond shows you what forces the soldier is under. Green =
Liu Bei, Red = Cao Cao, Blue = Sun Quan.)
This is the screen that, well, shows you the battle map. It will show you where
each of your officers are, as well as any enemy officers whose location has
been spotted. It will show if any of your officers are engaged in combat with
any enemy forces why blinking arrows connecting the fighting forces. It will
also show you the current path an officer is following (if one has been set)
when you put the cursor over them. The controls are as follows:
Directional pad: Moves the cursor to available officers/options.
Left analog: Move camera.
Right analog: Rotate camera.
Select: Brings up function menu.
L2: Turn general names on/off.
R2: Shows the control guide.
L1/R1: Switches between generals.
Triangle: Switches back to the army of the previous officer.
This is the screen when you're directly controlling an officer and fighting in
a battle. The controls are as follows:
Direction pad (up, right, left): Moves the officer the selected direction.
However the down button will gather troops around the officer, which can then
be used to rush.
Left analog: Same as directional pad.
Right analog: Rotate camera.
L3: Turn radar on/off.
Start: Pause/Skip FMVs.
L2: Turn on/off enemy indicator.
R2: Shows the control guide.
Triangle: Returns you to the army display screen.
Square: Returns you to the battle map screen.
X: Select/Attack/Rush with gathered troops.
Circle: Opens the special abilities screen.
So that's pretty much the basic controls. If you ever forget during the game
what control does what, just press the R2 button to bring up the control
guide. Kind of negates the purpose of me even typing all of this up, but I
guess for completions sake I had to do it.

04. GAME BASICS [GMBA]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The main story of this game revolves around the characters of the Three
Kingdoms era of Chinese history (roughly 184 - 280 AD). The story revolves
around the leader of the Shu army, Liu Bei, fighting for his love Diao Chan,
who has been held hostage by Cao Cao. He seeks the location of the Imperial
Seal (which apparently only Diao Chan knows where it is, or something.) Not
exactly (or at all) historically accurate, however some of the battles and
events that take place are based off actual history.
Below I will list some general information about the game that all new players
should know.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
GAME FLOW [GMFL]
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Basically, the game plays out like this:
Power Status -> Political Policy -> Drama -> War Council -> Battle -> Postwar
Power status: This is basically a narration showing who is currently in control
of what land, and what their next move is.
Political Policy: This is advice given by several of your officers, one of
which you will choose upon. More information on political policies is covered
in section 4.4.
Drama: This is an FMV showing actions that are leading up to a battle.
War Council: Here you will have up several options on how to position and
maneuver your officers during the upcoming battle. Any available traps or
strategies will be shown here. Generally there are three different options to
choose from, however sometimes there can be as little as only one possible
option for you to choose. The various options you have at each war council will
be further explained during each individual battle in the walkthrough section.
Battle: The actual battle. You will start each battle with the formation that
you decided upon during the War Council, and your officers will then move out
on their own set path according to the plan. However take note that you can
change their current action at any point during the battle.
Postwar: After the battle, if you win, you continue on. If not you're given
the option of fighting the battle again or not.
**NOTE**
I have only listed officers that are playable, and the synopsis I have given
is only information taken from what we are given in the game (to write a
historically accurate bio on any of these characters would take far too long
and, given the context of this game, be rather pointless.) If I have forgotten
anyone, please email me. Also note that even though you cannot play as Wu,
you can control some of their units during the battle of Chi Bi, so I have
included those as well.
**NOTE**
Abilities that have a (s) next to them means that those are the abilities that
the character starts the game with. All other abilities listed for each
character are learned at a later point in time.

SPECIAL ABILITIES [SPAB]
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Special abilities are useful fighting tools that each officer has. The types
of special abilities and amount available differ with each officer, and can
be acquired by that officer receiving more experience. Using special abilities
is essentially how you will win battles. They're the quickest way of taking
out a large number of enemy troops as well as quickly decreasing the enemy
morale. In order to use a special ability, select the officer with which you
wish to use the ability. Then press the "O" button to bring up the special
ability menu. There's a few things to know about using special abilities:
- They cannot be used on certain terrain. This can include ships, bridges,
gates, or if there is an object in the way.
- Once an officer has used a special ability, it will be unavailable for use
again for a while. If you look to the left of the screen when you are on
the officer screen, above the officers name there are little teardrop
shaped symbols. These represent how many special abilities that officer has.
When the special ability has been used, the teardrop will become
transparent instead of filled in. When the special ability is "recharging"
and is about to become available again shortly, it will start to blink. And
finally once the special ability can be used again, you will hear a sharp
"ding" noise and the teardrop will be filled in again.
- Friendly units cannot be damaged by special abilities.
Once you have selected a special ability and are ready to use it, use the
directional pad or analog sticks to move the attack range over as many possible
enemy soldiers as you can. Sometimes the best way to do this is to simply
move your officer around until you are in a spot that will get you the most
enemy soldiers within the attack range. How much area the attack range covers
depends on what type of special ability it is, as well as the officers
experience.
There are 2 types of special abilities: strategic and magical. It's pretty
self-explanatory what the difference between the two would be. Depending on
what class an officer is in, they will either be able to use only strategic
abilities, only magical abilities, or both. The classes are as follows:
Take into consideration that the amount of enemy soldiers that are killed
depends on how many are within the attack range, and the size of the range
depends on the officers war ability.
Battle Cry
-------
Lowers the morale of surrounding enemy soldiers.
Charge
-------
Forward charge using calvary troops, flattens anyone in the way.
Duel
-------
Your officer will duel with one of the enemy officers that his army is
currently fighting against. If you win your morale will greatly rise while
the enemies will greatly fall, and if you lose, vice versa. If an enemy officer
offers a duel against you, you can deny it by pressing triangle. However your
morale will drop slightly while the enemies rises slightly.
Iron Wall
-------
When an enemy officer attempts to use a magical attack against you, all of your
soldiers that are within the enemies attack range will have a little white
shield in front of them, and will take no damage. If you're currently playing
as one of the officers when the enemy attempts to use the magic attack you
will have a short window of opportunity to press the "X" button to initiate
the iron wall (a message will appear in the lower right hand corner of the
screen.) If you're playing as a different officer fighting a different enemy
(not the one initiating the attack) a message will pop up on the screen
asking if you want to use the iron wall or not. You have to either accept or
deny.
Raid
-------
Your officer, under your control, charges through the enemy killing anyone in
his way. There is a time limit however, shown by a bar in the lower left hand
side of the screen. Very useful for mowing down large groups of enemies.
Rally
-------
Raise the morale of surrounding friendly soldiers.
Rush
-------
Forward charge with foot soldiers, flattens anyone in the way.
Take into consideration that the amount of enemy soldiers killed depends on
how many of them are within the attack range and the officers magic ability.
Fireball
-------
A huge fireball (ranging from 1-5 depending on magic ability) rolls through
the enemy lines, eventually exploding at the end.
Fire Storm
-------
Streaks of fire (ranging from 1-5 depending on magic ability) roll around in
a circle motion through the enemy lines, burning all those who get in the way.
Fissure
-------
A huge crack in the ground opens up, resulting in any nearby enemies falling
to their death.
Gale
-------
A huge tornado is summoned which blows away the enemy.
Hail
-------
Giant blades of ice shoot up into the sky and then come crashing back down to
earth, killing any enemy soldiers on the ground.
Ice Storm
-------
Sheets of ice sweep across the ground, freezing any enemy soldiers caught in
its path.

POLITICAL POLICIES [PLPO]
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Before each new battle you will be given three different political policies to
choose from that will affect the next battle (or in some cases, the rest of
the game; ex: recruiting a certain officer into your army.) I list the
political policies for each battle and I will also recommend one, however you
should know that there really isn't any "wrong" policy to choose. They each
have their own pros and cons over each of the other policies. You can also
check your current armies stats versus your enemies stats by pressing the
square button while on this screen (for more information about the stats go to
the stats section of this guide.) Here is a list of the different types of
political policies:
Recruit troops: This will increase the number of troops for each of your units.
Generally this number is in the higher hundreds, but I've never seen it hit
1,000 or higher. I don't really find this policy very useful, and personally
I never use it. Such a small number of troops really doesn't affect the tide
of battle at all.
Train troops: This will increase the power of some of your generals. It's a
pretty solid policy to choose, since it helps your units level up quicker and
gain more abilities. I usually use this as sort of a "fall back", such as if
there aren't any special abilities that will greatly help in the battle to
come, I'll usually choose this one then (if it's an option, of course.)
Kill man-eating tiger: This will greatly increase the fame of one unit (whoever
is the one killing the tiger.) I don't recommend this too much because it only
affects one unit.
Assist land development: This will increase your supply and morale. Like
training your troops, this is a good policy to choose when in doubt over the
others, or if there is nothing else of much use. This policy is worded many
different ways, but whenever you see the plan saying something like
"cultivating the land" or "getting supplies" then it means it's this.
Research weapon: This can either upgrade your officers troops or it will create
a special weapon that will be attached to one unit for the next battle.
Policies against the enemy: There are many of these, and they all have some
type of negative affect on the enemy for the next battle. Usually they will
have one of the following affects: enemy morale will drop by 10, enemy troop
size will drop by 10%, or enemy troops will flee during the next battle.
Allow "X" to train: This policy will greatly increase the stats of whatever
officer it says in the policy title.
Forming a special unit: This type of policy will create a special unit for the
next battle and attach it to a certain officer. This will make that unit all-
around more powerful in the next battle.
Recruit a new officer: I always recommend these policies when they show up.
You'll gain a new officer to your army either before the next battle or during
the battle they will defect to your forces. Don't pass these policies up,
if you don't choose it you'll forever lose the chance the get that officer!
**NOTE**
I'm pretty sure this section is accurate, but I can't say with 100% certainty
that I have the final upgrade for each troop class down. If there's any that
I'm missing, just send me an email.
Each officer has a certain type of troop underneath him. As he gains experience
the troops are promoted, however their actual class will never change. There
are many different types of troops, each which brings advantages and
disadvantages to the battlefield. Below I have listed all of the different
types of troops, and I have also listed what they become promoted to as the
officer gains experience.
Archers
-------
Female bow unit. High offense, low defense. Any officer that has archers
underneath them will recover special abilities quicker.
Upgrades: Heavy Archers, Elite Archers, Ultra Archers
Bow
-------
Uses bow and arrow to attack enemy from a long distance.
Upgrades: LongBow, Marksmen
Crossbow
-------
Uses a crossbow to attack enemy from a long distance. Has a higher offense
then regular bow, however if there are allies ahead they sometimes cannot
shoot.
Upgrades: Strong Cross, Heavy Cross, Arballists
Elephant
-------
Rides on elephants, have both a high offense and defense, and are unaffected
by strategic abilities.
Upgrades: Armored Elephant, Elite Elephant
Light Foot
-------
Uses swords for combat. Low offense, high defense.
Upgrades: Foot, Heavy Foot, Armored Foot
Horsebow
-------
Cavalry with bows, are able to attack from a long distance.
Upgrades: Mongolian Horse
Light Horse
-------
Ridges on horses. High offense, low defense, and greater mobility. Backup
effect area is greater than foot soldiers, but doesn't last as long. Any
officer who has horse units underneath them will recover special abilities
quicker.
Upgrades: Cavalry, Heavy Cavalry, Elite Cavalry
Light Sword
-------
Female foot soldiers unit. High offense, low defense. Any officer who has light
sword units underneath them will recover special abilities quicker.
Upgrades: Sword, Heavy Sword, Elite Sword, Ultra Sword
Light Spear
-------
Fights with spears. Has a greater offense then that of regular foot soldiers.
During battles you will have the troops under each officer organize into a
certain formation. There are 13 different types of formations, each that has
its own advantages and disadvantages. Some are better for offensive strikes,
while some are better for defense. Each time you start a battle each officer
is automatically set a formation that the game deems "optimal" for what their
specific role is in the battle, but you can change the formation at any time
by pressing "O" while on the officer screen. However the officer that you may
be selecting might not have all formations available to use. Officers can
learn new formations from gaining experience.
(To be perfectly honest with you I've already played through this game once
without ever touching the formations, and I didn't think it made the game any
bit harder. The game does a pretty good job at putting each of your units in
a decent default formation for whatever strategy you choose, and I don't
believe the perfect formation gives you enough of an edge to be a deal breaker
at any point in the game. It's just something to give you a little bit of an
edge, but personally unless you're playing on expert I think you have enough
of those...)
Asp
-------
X
X
X
X
Useful for strong frontal attacks, however this formation obviously leaves
you weak on the sides and rear.
Awl
-------
X
X X
X X
A good formation for a strong general who has powerful troops since the first
squad is the primary attackers. This formation is not able to attack long
range.
Bowl
-------
X X
XXX
Useful for attacking long range and for surrounding the enemy.
Box
-------
X X
X X
X
Both a good offensive and defensive formation, this keeps your troops grouped
up together tightly and increases the backup effect.
Bull
-------
X
X X
X
X
Similar to asp, this places two squads side by side to increase the back up
effect and to provide a little better defensive abilities then asp. However
it still leaves you weak to attacks from the rear.
Carp
-------
X X
A good defensive formation, also increases the backup effect due to the close
proximity of the squads to each other.
Dart
-------
X
X
Useful offensive formation for rushing as one large unit. This formation is
unable to attack long range.
Dome
-------
X X
Similar formation to awl, however this better protects the first squad while
also providing a good defense for attacks from the side. Good defensive
formation against a smaller enemy.
Flat
-------
Not very useful as it has no real offensive or defensive advantages, and it
is also unable to attack long range. It doesn't have an advantage over any
other formation.
Goose
-------
XX (not really able to properly show this formation using plain text)
Good formation for protecting the first squad, also useful for attacking at a
long range with archers/bowmen.
Moon
-------
X X
X X
X
A solid defensive formation, good for surrounding the enemy.
Ring
-------
X X
X X
X
Kind of the "default" formation, it is both very capable as an offensive and
defensive formation as it leaves you protected on all sides. Has no real
advantages nor weaknesses.
Swan
-------
X X
X X
X
Good for attacking with a large number of ally troops, as well as good for
attacking at a long range.

STATS INFO [STAT]
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
There's several different stats in this game, and each different stat can be
viewed on certain screens. The statistics of the game control pretty much
everything about your units, from their troop count to morale and their
effectiveness in battle. As you win battles and defeat enemy units you'll
gain experience, which will increase each of your individual units' stats.
Here I'll explain what most of the different statistics are and what they
mean. Most of this was taken from the instruction manual.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Army Information
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
You can view these stats by pressing the "Square" button while on the political
policy screen. You can view both you and your enemies army information on
this screen.
Troop Strength: This affects the number of soldiers in combat. A one-point
increase in troop strength equals about 100 additional soldiers per unit.
This stat increases after each battle. The fewer amount of troops killed in
the previous battle, the greater the increase in troop strength for the next
battle.
Supply: This will affect each units morale at the beginning of each battle.
This stat increases after each battle. The faster the previous battle is
won, the greater the supply increase for the next battle.
Technology: This affects the promotion of troops. The more enemy units that
are defeated in battle, the greater the technology increase for the next
battle.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Officer Information
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
You can view these stats by pressing the "Square" button when you select an
officer and are on the unit information screen.
War: This is the officers combat strength. It affects the attack strength,
defense strength, and morale of the soldiers. It's possible to increase this
stat by using strategic special abilities.
Magic: This affects the power of magical special abilities as well as that
officers resistance to them. It's possible to increase this stat by using
magical special abilities.
Fame: This will affect the number of troops in the officers unit, as well as
what types of formations they've learned. You can increase this stat by
defeating enemy officers during battles. A one-point increase will equal about
100 additional soldiers in the officers unit.
Experience: This affects the promotion of troops and the amount of learned
special abilities. You can increase this stat by defeating enemy units,
destroying the enemy supply compound, or surviving a battle.
Troops: The class of troops of that unit.
Special abilities: The special abilities of the selected officer. View these
by pressing the "O" button.

TIPS AND TRICKS [TNTS]
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Here are what I believe to be some very valuable tips and tricks that I have
come across while playing the game. Generally it's just ways to make the game
a little bit easier. Sometimes, while they may seem good on paper, they might
not work too well depending on the particular battle. But for the most part
these tips will work pretty well in most situations.
- If it isn't extremely obvious, it's much quicker to take down an enemy unit
when you have more than one friendly unit attacking them. Now you may ask,
what about when you're forced to fight 1v1 such as during gate battles or
bridge battles? Well, a good thing to do is have one unit engage the enemy
on the bridge/at the gate while the other units wait nearby outside. After
a minute or two of fighting the enemy, have that unit retreat back to near
where the other units are waiting. The enemy will cross the bridge/come out
from behind the gate and chase you, then once they're out in the open have
all of your units swarm them. This tactic is extremely useful for gate and
bridge battles, and you'll notice throughout the walkthrough that I use it
a lot.
- If your unit gets attacked from behind or the enemy officer uses a certain
type of special ability on you, you'll notice a lot of troops with "?"'s
over their head. This means they're "confused" and in this state they won't
attack. Just start mashing the "X" button until all of the "?"'s are gone
and your troops are back to normal. Sometimes it takes a little while of
button mashing to get them all back to normal, I'm not exactly sure what
affects the amount of time it takes. Likewise, if you attack an enemy from
behind or you hit them with certain types of special abilities you will
confuse their troops.
- Use your special abilities as soon as you can, preferably right after you
enter battle with the enemy and all of their troops are grouped together.
The quicker you use your special abilities, the quicker they'll recover and
you can use them again.
- The main tactic for naval battles is surrounding the enemy ships. You can't
use many special abilities in naval battles, and units can only fight one
on one directly, therefore to quickly lower an enemy units morale just
have another unit attempt to attack him. The game will tell you that you
cannot directly attack him, but you can intercept them. Likewise, if one of
your units gets surrounded by the enemy their morale will quickly drop. Your
best bet for naval battles is to surround enemy units to quickly bring them
down. Then, once you have the advantage in number, you'll be able to quickly
bring the rest of the enemies down the same way.
- Dueling in this game is easily manipulated in your favor. To put it simply,
if your morale is at least 25% greater (just a general estimate by me, it
can usually be even less then that) then the morale of whoever you're about
to duel, you're pretty much guaranteed to win. I don't think I've ever lost
a duel where I had more morale then the enemy. But I usually don't duel until
I have at least a 25% advantage of morale on the enemy, just to be sure.
- Watch out for enemy units that have archers or longbow as their troop type.
They can attack you from a distance without even having to be in battle with
you. A lot of the times you'll be fighting an enemy unit while they're just
sitting behind them, firing at you. This is a quick way to have your morale
drop. To battle this either engage in the enemy who is firing at you with
another unit or simply flee from whatever battle you're in and take the fight
somewhere else. Just hope that they don't follow. Likewise, if you have a
unit with archer-type troops, you can do the same to the enemy as long as
you're in the right formation (see the "Formations" section for more
information.)
- You'll notice that sometimes the little diamond above your units/the enemy
units heads are brighter or dimer. This is determined by the backup effect.
The backup effect will increase or decrease your soldiers fighting ability;
they will fight better when they are surrounded by friendly soldiers.
So as a battle rages on, usually you'll notice the soldiers start to get
spread out more and the backup effect will decrease. Press the down arrow
to gather your soldiers back together and increase the effect. You can also
have them rush after doing this by pressing the "X" button.

05. WALKTHROUGH [WKTR]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
**NOTE**
This walkthrough follows the game on a normal difficulty setting.
Here it is, the main portion of this guide - the walkthrough. For each battle
I recommend what I believe is the best political policy and war council plan
to use for the upcoming battle. However I will suggest a strategy for beating
each stage with each different war council plan. I will list the victory and
defeat conditions for each battle, as well as all friendly and all enemy
generals and subgenerals. For the enemy generals I will list their approximate
number of troops, their morale, troop type, and what special abilities they
have. I say approximate because the number of troops can vary, so I generally
round to the nearest hundredth.
I have tried to make this walkthrough as accurate as possible, but take into
consideration the fact that sometimes the way the enemy is set up across the
battlefield (mainly which officers are where) seems to change randomly at
times. I'm not sure if there is some variable that changes it, but it doesn't
seem to have to do with the political policy or war council plan that you
decide upon. Never the less, I've tried to provide a general strategy for how</pre><pre id="faqspan-2">
to easily win each battle, regardless of which enemy officer you may be
fighting.
So with that said there isn't much left to do except select "New Game" and
proceed with the first battle.

- This battle is more or less just a tutorial. You can't really lose this,
and you pretty much have to do what the game tells you to do.
- Zhang Fei will attack Yue Jin on the left, Guan Yu will attack Li Dian on
the right. They will be quickly defeated after they start fighting.
- After Yue Jin and and Li Dian are defeated, Himiko will show up, and you
will be told that Zhang Fei's scouts have located Xiahou Yuan.
- After Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are defeated, Zhao Yun will arrive and join Liu
Bei in the fight against Xiahou Yuan.
- Once you actually have control over the game use Liu Bei's rally to regain
morale and then simply pummel Xiahou Yuan into retreat. Easy, but then again
it's the tutorial battle, it should be, right?

Guan Yu: Train troops

his units troop number (1,000), more so then using the recruit troops option.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
War Council
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Zhang Fei: Zhang Fei's unit to delay enemy
Zhao Yun: Zhao Yun's unit to delay enemy (recommended)
Personally I don't think it matters too much which option you pick here.
Zhao Yun's army will be slightly larger then Zhang Fei's (even if you pick
the "Kill man eating tiger" political policy). However as you'll see below
I end up changing most of their objectives anyway. I decided to pick Zhao
Yun's plan.

- Change Zhang Fei's objective: move him back across the bridge and over
towards the wooded area to the right.
- Change Guan Yu's objective: move him up to the wooded area to the left, a
little in front of the supply camp.
- Change Liu Bei's objective: have him go assist Zhao Yun.
- Yue Jin will cross the bridge, when he does attack him with both Zhang Fei
and Guan Yu's troops. The reason for moving back Guan Yu and Zhange Fei's
troops to do this is now when the enemy comes across the bridge they can
only come one unit at a time, which you can then pummel 2v1 once they get
across. Much easier and quicker.
- Zhao Yun and Liu Bei will run into Li Dian on the left first, meet up with
him at the narrow part of the valley and attack him with both units.
- When Zhao Cang joins, let him advance forward a little until he spots Xun
Yu. His objective will automatically change to attacking her, however I
suggest you hold off until Guan Yu and Zhang Fei destroy Yue Jin.
- Once Li Dian's unit is defeated, have Zhao Yun and Liu Bei gang up on
Guo Jia.
- When Yue Jin is defeated, have Guan Yu and Zhang Fei cross the bridge and
attack Xun Yu. By this time Zhao Yun and Liu Bei will probably have killed
Guo Jia. You can have them go all the way up and around the northern part,
cross the bridge and attack Xun Yu from behind. Either way Xun Yu will
quickly fall with so many people attacking her.
For "Zhang Fei's unit to delay enemy":
- Essentially this is the exact same battle as if you choose Zhao Yun, so
use the same tactics I have supplied up top with Zhao Yun's plan and just
flip flop Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun's units.

superior army.

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Zhuge Liang: Set rockslide on northern route
Zhao Yun: Dig pits along center route (recommended)
Guan Yu: Set mines along southern route
I recommend digging the pits along the center route because this will lure
in Xiahou Dun, who is one of the stronger enemy units in this battle, and
greatly weaken him. However all three of these plans are pretty similar to
each other, and as you will see below regardless of which one you pick the
battle will end up playing out essentially the same way.

- Zhang Fei, being an idiot, has charged the enemy and is now way out in front.
Trying to have him fall back is rather pointless, since he will just keep
running into enemy officers. Just have him fight Cao Ren, you shouldn't
have much problem keeping him alive and well until backup arrives to assist
him. Use Luo Luo's volley once the enemy has grouped up, however I suggest
on waiting a bit if you feel like dueling Cao Ren. Zhang Fei and Cao Ren's
morale is rather close to start (Cao Ren usually with a slight advantage),
so Zhang Fei runs the risk of losing (although I've already lost before and
still had no problem keeping Zhang Fei's unit alive throughout the entire
battle.)
- Have Zhuge Liang engage in battle with Li Dian.
- Have Guan Yu engage in battle with Yue Jin.
- Wait for Xiahou Dun's unit to set the pit trap. Then let him push forward
and engage in battle with Zhao Yun. Once he does, move Liu Bei up and attack
him with both units.
- This battle really shouldn't be that hard. The only unit that may struggle
is Zhang Fei, if he does simply have him retreat from battle and fall back
towards the middle area. Zhuge Liang and Guan Yu should be able to dispose
of their enemies rather quickly, so once they have just have them all gang
up on Cao Ren, who is the only unit that may actually put up a fight.
For "Set rockslide on northern route":
- What do you know, Zhang Fei has done it again! Have him engage in battle
with Cao Ren and have Guan Yu and Zhao Yun push up. Let Liu Bei and Zhuge
Liang carry out their default objective.
- Zhao Yun will engage in battle with Xiahou Dun, while Guan Yu will engage in
battle with Yue Jin. Taking out these two units shouldn't be too much of a
problem.
- The quickest way to defeat Xiahou Dun is to quickly use Zhao Yun's raid
once the battle starts, this should easily kill 2,000+ troops. Then, while
Zhao Yun has the advantage in morale, duel Xiahou Dun. You will most
certainly win, and his unit should go down pretty quickly after that.
- Li Dian's unit will run into the rockslide. Let him push forward and engage
in battle with Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang. He will go down quickly.
- As allied officers defeat their respective enemies have them go provide
additional back up to Zhang Fei. You will win in no time.
For "Set mines along southern route":
- You guessed it, same scenario as the other two options. Zhang Fei will be
on the front lines and will engage in battle with Cao Ren (why don't all of
the units just gang up on him, they're right there! But whatever. Guess that
might make this battle too "hard".)
- Push forward with Zhao Yun and Zhuge Liang. Have Liu Bei and Guan Yu carry
out with their default objective.
- Have Zhao Yun engage in battle with Xiahou Dun, and Zhuge Liang engage in
battle with Li Dian.
- Yue Jin's unit will run into the mines. Allow him to advance towards Liu
Bei, and then attack him with both Guan Yu and Liu Bei.

I recommend to intercept the enemy supplies because this will both increase
your supply rate and lower Cao Cao's morale. Take note that if you're going to
choose the option to retreat through the central valley in the war council you
might want to choose to kill the man eating tiger to buff up Guan Yu's stats.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
War Council
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Zhang Fei: Retreat via western bridge
Guan Yu: Retreat through central valley
Li Li: Retreat through eastern woods (recommended)
I recommend using the woods to retreat. Li Li's mines do a great deal of
damage, and she shouldn't have any problems holding off any units. It doesn't
really make sense to choose either of the other two options over this one,
since you can essentially carry out the plans purposed in the other two options
during this one as well (just have Zhang Fei guard the bridge, Guan Yu guard
the central pass.) With this choice you just get the added bonus of the mines
in the forest. Using the mines will also disorient Cao Cao's army.

(Now before you think, "Holy $#@!& I have to fight all of them!?" - no, you
don't. This battle is mainly about running away, and positioning the rest of
your forces in a spot so they are just holding off one enemy unit at a time.
Don't worry about the large number of enemy forces.)
- Move Zhang Fei down across the bridge and have him hold his position there.
Move Guan Yu down to the narrowest part of the central pass. This way both
of these units cannot get ganged up on. Have Liu Bei and Li Li carry out
their objective as planned.
- Make sure Zhang Fei's unit fights on the bridge, as both raid and volley
can be used on a bridge.
- Xiahou Dun's unit will run into Li Li's mines and will be greatly damaged.
Attack his unit with Li Li to confuse the enemy.
- Once Liu Bei makes it towards the end of the forest Zhuge Liang will appear.
Have him follow Liu Bei down to the staging point.
- When Liu Bei starts crossing the bridge Mei Sanniangs unit appears. Have her
head towards the staging point. Once she gets close to it, Himiko's unit
will appear on the staging point. She must be defeated for Liu Bei to escape.
Send Mei Sanniang down to fight Himiko. Wear down her morale by using
meteor strike and duel if you have it (which Himiko will refuse.)
- When Zhuge Liang gets down to the staging area, have him attack Himiko on
the other side. Use his strong magic to quickly finish the job. Or, if you
don't feel like waiting for Zhuge Liang to get there, have Liu Bei attack
Himiko instead (since Zhuge Liang will most likely be behind Liu Bei at this
point.)
- Once Himiko is defeated move Liu Bei to the staging point and victory is
yours. See, not too hard despite how it may have looked.
For "Retreat via western bridge":
- The main reason I don't like this strategy so much is that it places Liu
Bei very close to Cao Cao's forces right from the start. Let Liu Bei start
heading towards the western bridge. Zhang Fei will run up to intercept Yu
Jin's unit. However out in the open like this he is vulnerable on several
different sides. Once Liu Bei has crossed the bridge have Zhang Fei retreat
down towards the bridge. If you're unable to get Zhang Fei back down to the
bridge he will still be able to hold off enemy units long enough for Liu
Bei to escape, however he probably won't survive the battle.
- Move Guan Yu down to the narrowest part of the central pathway. Hold his
position there. Have Li Li push up just a tiny bit into the small clearing.
- Once Zhuge Liang arrives have him follow Liu Bei down to the staging point.
- When Mei Sanniang arrives have her move down towards the right side of the
staging point.
- Attack Himiko with Mei Sanniang on the right and either Liu Bei or Zhuge
Liang on the left. Once Himiko is defeated move Liu Bei to the staging point
and you have won.
For "Retreat through central valley":
- Move Zhang Fei's unit across the bridge, and move Li Li's unit forward just
a little into the small clearing.
- Once Liu Bei has passed Guan Yu's unit move Guan Yu down to the narrowest
portion of the central valley.
- When Zhuge Liang arrives you can either have him follow Liu Bei or back up
either Guan Yu for Li Li if they're struggling (which, at this point, they
most likely are.) I would suggest to have him backup Li Li.
- When Mei Sanniang arrives move both her and Liu Bei down to the staging point
to engage Himiko in battle. Quickly defeat her before any of your officers
have to retreat (if none have yet at this point.)
- Once Himiko is defeated move Liu Bei onto the staging point to win. I
wouldn't really say that either of these last two war council plans is more
difficult then using the eastern woods, it's just your own officers have
a greater chance of being defeated with these strategies.

- Move all of your units up and group them together, try to get them side by
side close to a line formation. If you have Cai Mao, have him move over to
the very left side, next to Guan Yu. The reason for this is to try and
prevent the enemy from intercepting your units as much as possible. If they
surround one of your units, their morale will quickly drop. Cai Mao isn't
going to be of much use fighting 1v1, so I send him all the way to the left
so when Guan Yu gets into a battle I then use Cai Mao to intercept the
enemy unit. He is much more useful this way in this battle.
- Setting up your units in this formation will usually result in the brunt of
Cao Cao's army heading over to the right by Sun Quan. Use Guan Yu and Cai
Mao to surround and quickly defeat Cao Ren, and then start surrounding
other units on the left side once he's taken care of. As long as you kept
a tight line formation Cao Cao's army shouldn't start surrounding any of
the Wu units, they'll kind of just all clump together behind the front line.
- When Sun Li shows up either send her up next to Liu Bei if it looks like he
might be able to get surrounded or send her over to Sun Quan if Liu Bei's
position appears to be ok.
- The Wu officers are very strong, you shouldn't have any problem fighting
Cao Cao's units 1v1 and destroying them with their special abilities (many
of them have raid or strong magic abilities. Take advantage of them as soon
as possible.
- After about 1/3 of the battle is over, Zhuge Liang will appear and will set
fire to the enemy ships. This greatly reduces all of Cao Cao's units morale.
It's pretty much game over at this point, his army is so badly damaged it
doesn't take long to win. Just fight the remaining units and surround them
once you have the advantage in numbers and the battle will be won before
you know it.

Pang Tong: Go around to far gates (recommended)
Mei Sanniang: Concentrate attack on north gate

units and gang up on them. In every plan though you should have Guan Yu using
his hawk troops to get him into the castle.

**NOTE**
Whenever the enemies position is unknown going into battle, it seems like
exactly where they are on the battlefield each play through might change a
little bit. Generally speaking the enemy units should be in the same general
area each time (sometimes they will be closer to the gate, sometimes a little
further away, etc.) however sometimes different officers will be at different
places entirely. For example on one play through while doing the "Go around to
far gates" Zhang Ren's unit wasn't even at the southern gate, nor anywhere on
the map as far as I could find. I'm not sure if this was just a glitch or not,
but I've seen it happen several times. If you have any more information about
this, please email me.
For "Go around to far gates":
- Abort Liu Bei's objective and have him move towards the north gate (no point
in having him sit by the supply camp all battle) but do not attack it. Have
all of the other units carry out their default objective.
- Ma Chao will join shortly after the battle starts, and he will head towards
the north gate. Allow him to go there and start attacking it.
- Guan Yu should reach the hill and fly into the castle using his hawk troops
before any of your other units even reach their designated attacking points.
Once he is inside have him move down to the western gate (that Sun Li is
going to be attacking) and have him engage in battle with Wu Yi.
- When Sun Li arrives at the gate it should fall right away since Wu Yi is
being attacked by Guan Yu. Fight Wu Yi with both Guan Yu and Sun Li to
quickly bring him down.
- Zhuge Liang and Zhang Fei will attack Zhang Ren at the southern gate. Once
they break through, fight Zhang Ren for a bit then have Zhuge Liang retreat
back outside south of the castle a little. When Zhang Ren follows you out,
attack him with both Zhang Fei and Zhuge Liang.
- Once Zhuge Liang and Zhang Fei defeat Zhang Ren have Zhange Fei take the
zig zaging route to the left up to the left middle path of the castle. Have
Zhuge Liang go up to the middle of the castle and go left, attacking Fa
Zheng from the back and confusing his unit.
- Ma Chao will enter battle with Yan Yan at the north gate. After fighting him
for a few minutes, retreat north a little outside of the gate. Yan Yan will
follow out, when he does attack him with both Liu Bei and Ma Chao. He will
fall quickly after that.
- Once Wu Yi and Fa Zheng's units are scattered simply gang up on Liu Zhang.
Shouldn't take too long to destroy him after that.
For "Concentrate attack on east gate":
- As Guan Yu moves towards his objective (the hill) he will spot Yan Yan's unit
outside of the north gate. Have Sun Li's unit move up to the north gate as
well, and engage Yan Yan's unit with both Guan Yu and Sun Li. Allow the other
units to carry out their default objective.
- Around the time that Ma Chao shows up Yan Yan's unit should either be
defeated or just about defeated. Finish him off, then have Guan Yu return
to the hill so his troops can fly into the castle. Have Ma Chao and Sun Li
enter the castle through the north gate.
- Once Zhang Fei breaks through the eastern gate have him attack Fa Zheng.
After he's battled him for a few minutes fall back outside of the gate. Fa
Zheng will follow. Attack him with Zhang Fei, Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang.
- When Guan Yu flies into the castle have him head down to the western gate
and attack Wu Yi. Liu Zhang will be down to the south of him as well,
however since Wu Yi's unit is blocking him in he will not be able to attack
you.
- When Sun Li's unit enters the castle send her down the middle and have her
head towards the western gate. Have her attack Wu Yi's unit from behind.
- If you want, have Ma Chao go towards the southern gate and attack Zhang Ran
from behind.
- Just wear down each unit by ganging up on them and in no time the battle
will be won.
For "Concentrate attack on north gate":
- Have all of your units move to their default positions. Once Guan Yu's troops
fly into the castle, have him move up to the northern gate and attack Yan
Yan from behind. Zhuge Liang and Sun Li's troops will start climbing the
walls, while Liu Bei rams the gate. Once Guan Yu attacks Yan Yan from behind,
the gate will fall. Once the gate is down, move Guan Yu around because Fa
Zheng will be creeping up from behind to attack him.
- As Liu Bei, retreat from battle with Yan Yan to outside of the castle. Yan
Yan will follow, when he does attack him with Liu Bei and Guan Yu.
- When Ma Chao arrives, have him enter the castle from the eastern gate.
- After Zhuge Liang climbs the castle walls into the castle he will spot Liu
Zhang, engage him in battle and use your strong magic against him. All you
really need to do here is have your other units hold off the rest of the
enemy while you defeat Liu Zhang with Zhuge Liang. His powerful magic will
quickly get rid of Liu Zhang's army. Use Huang Zhong's volley and then
battle cry to finish him off. Liu Zhang will go down in no time and then
it's game over.

Zhang Fei: Attack supply compound
Fa Zhang: Split and advance

The reason that I recommend Sun Li's plan is because of the placing that it

**NOTE**
After replaying this battle several times under each different war council
plan, it seems like sometimes instead of Xiahou Ba and Sima Yi appearing later
on in the battle they're in the middle area pushing towards the supply
compound. It's up to you if you wish to reset the game and try again
in hopes that when you go into battle again they are no longer there.
Personally I think that if you're using the "Lay traps and defend" or the
"Split and advance" plan then it's easiest if they arrive later when the
battle is already almost won. However if you've decided to do the "Attack
supply compound" (which is basically just an all out attack) then it's easiest
to actually engage them in battle right from the start so you don't have to
worry about rushing the supply compound. But that's just my personal opinion
of this battle, you may find the opposite to be easier.
For "Lay traps and defend":
- Hopefully you choose Fa Zheng's political policy, as this will make this
battle much easier.
- Move Zhuge Liang up through the mine trap and have him go directly towards
the enemy supply compound. Let Liu Bei stay guard at his supply compound,
and let Zhang Fei, Sun Li, and Huang Zhong carry out their default
objective.
- Xun Yu, Xu Huang, and Zhang He will all be chillin up by the supply compound.
As Zhang Fei, Huang Zhong and Sun Li approach, they will confront them and
go into battle.
- Xun Yu's unit should pull down from the supply compound to join in the
attack. This is why I told you to send Zhuge Liang's unit up to the supply
compound. He'll easily be able to just walk right up and attack it.
- Once the enemy supply compound is destroyed the battle is yours. Have Zhuge
Liang's unit go down and attack Xun Yu, who won't last long under these
circumstances.
- Shortly after this Sima Yi and Xiahou Ba will show up at the bottom left
corner of the map, near Liu Bei and the supply compound. I wouldn't really
worry about it though, you'll probably defeat Xun Yu before they even
reach Liu Bei, and if not it won't be very long until she is defeated, so
they don't really pose much of a threat.
- Once Xun Yu has been defeated you've won.
For "Attack supply compound":
- Have all of your units carry out their default objective, and send Liu Bei
up along with them (he won't need to stay guard at the compound.) You'll
run into the main army on the way there: Xiahou Ba, Xu Huang, Zhange He,
and Sima Yi.
- If you choose Fa Zheng's policy Xu Huang and Zhang He should be able to
be defeated rather quickly.
- Once they are out of the picture gang up on Sima Yi and Xiahou Ba to quickly
defeat them.
- Once all the other enemy officers are gone simply stroll up to where the
supply compound is, have a few officers attack Xun Yu and send someone to
go burn it down.
For "Split and advance":
- This basically plays out the same was as the "Lay traps and defend", however
it's usually harder to sneak someone past the enemy units and attack the
supply compound. Each time I tired I was unable to and just ended up having
all of my units in battle with one of the enemy units. As long as you can
quickly defeat one of the enemy units (probably either Zhang He or Xu Huang
if they're weakened) and slip past the others up to the enemy supply
compound, this isn't that big of a deal. However I still think "Lay traps
and defend" is a much easier, more reliable way to get things done.
- Once you are able to, set fire to the enemy supply compound to secure
victory for the battle.
- Yet again Sima Yi and Xiahou Ba will appear after a little while at the
lower left corner of the map and head towards Liu Bei. Hopefully you've
been able to burn the supply compound by down and Xun Yu is almost defeated.

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Huang Yue Ying: Deploy new weapon
Mei Sanniang: Recruit troops
Ma Chao: Hire local guide (recommended)
Hiring the local guide will prevent your troops from taking any damage while
running through the swap pits. There's no way you can avoid running through
the swamp pits in the upcoming battle, so personally I believe this is the
best choice. The amount of troops you would recruit would just all be killed
by running through the swamps anyway, and the new weapon (Wooden Ox) isn't
really that useful.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
War Council
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Ma Chao: Set traps and wait in ambush (recommended)
Mei Sanniang: Destroy bridge and overrun middle
Ma Chao's plan is much better then Mei Sanniangs, neither of the three units
are very powerful and Ma Chao's pits will weaken them even more, making it
very easy to destroy them. All Mei Sanniang's plan really does is just draw
out what could be an otherwise quick battle.

- Let your units go to their designated positions. Have Liu Bei reinforce
Mei Sanniangs unit once she goes into battle.
- The pits will greatly damage the enemy, so just let them fall into the traps
and finish them off once they engage in battle with you. Shouldn't be too
difficult.
- Once all three units are defeated, Zhu Rong and Meng Huo will appear at the
bottom area of the map. Zhu Rong will stay around that area, and Meng Huo
will make his way up to the lower bridge on the left side of the map. You
could either wait for them to separate and gang up on each of them, or if
you're right in the area when they show up (I start pushing through the
middle right after the enemy is defeated so Mei Sanniang and Liu Bei are
usually right there waiting for them when they arrive) you can just go in
and defeat them with your entire army. Either way it shouldn't be very hard
to defeat them since it's 5v2.
For "Destroy bridge and overrun middle":
- The thing about this strategy is that it's pretty much inferior to setting
the traps in every way. You can only attack one unit on one unit in the
middle anyway, so it's not like you can even gang up on them.
- Never the less, have Ma Chao and Mei Sanning take out the bridges like
planned. Once this is done, let Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang stay in their current
positions and move Ma Chao's unit down so he is blocking the left side.
This way the enemy has no choice but to come up the middle path, straight
into battle with three of your units.
- Wu Tugu's unit will be the first to fall into your death trap. Once he's
defeated just hold your position for the next enemy to come. It may take a
little while for them to reach you though, so be patient.
- Once all the enemies have been defeated Zhu Rong and Meng Huo will appear.
Move all of your units down the central pathway and find Zhu Rong and
Meng Huo and defeat them. Zhu Rong will most likely be towards the opening
of the narrow path. You should have enough room to 2v1 her.
- Eventually Zhu Rong will call for help. Meng Huo will start making his
way toward her.
- Once Zhu Rong is out of the picture just gang up on Meng Huo to bring an end
to this battle.

I suggest using the new weapon, the Fire Castle. It will greatly damage whoever

hardly enough to really make it useful.

useless, and I highly suggest against it.

- Just let all of your units carry out their designated task at the start.
If you choose the new weapon policy Zhuge Liang will set up the fire castle
weapon outside of the western gate and greatly damage whatever unit is
guarding it (it seems to be either Xiahou Dun or Cao Ren. I suggest retrying
the battle if it isn't Cao Ren, as it's a great help to quickly defeating
him if you use the fire castle on him.)
- Wait for the southern gate unit to come out and go for the decoy supply
compound. Once they get there and realize it's a fake, attack that unit with
Liu Bei and Pang Tong. They should go down pretty quickly.
- Let Guan Yu attack the northern gate. When Guan Ping reaches the eastern gate
he should get in no problem. Have him go up to the northern gate and attack
whoever is guarding it from behind.
- By this time Zhuge Liang should have the western gate open and be in battle
with whoever is guarding it. After a few minutes of fighting retreat back
outside to lure the enemy out from the gate so he can use his magic spells.
By this time whoever came out for the decoy supply compound should also be
defeated. Have either Liu Bei or Pang Tong go up and assist Zhuge Liang in
the fight. Have the other unit enter through the south gate of the castle.
- After Pang De and Yu Jin show up, Pang De will start to make his way to
the northern gate. Have Guan Ping go back down to the central area of the
castle (but make sure he's still on the northern path, don't put him right
in the middle) and wait for Peng De to come. Once he's in the middle area,
attack him. Then move whatever unit you brought into the castle from the
southern gate to attack Peng De's flank. Peng De will go down quickly this
way.
- Just finish off Cao Ren and the battle is yours.
For "Taunt enemy":
- Let Guan Yu taunt Dian Wei out of the castle, you can send Liu Bei all the
way up and around the north part of the castle to the castles eastern gate
if you want, but don't have him push up too far just yet, let him stay around
the corner of the eastern wall (this is optional, I do this so he can later
on flank Yu Jin and Pang De once they arrive. You could also send him to help
Guan Yu and Pang Tong if you wish.) Have Guan Ping abort his objective and
go help Zhuge Liang. Have him wait outside just south of the western gate.
- Once Dian Wei comes out of the castle he will try to retreat once he realizes
that it's a trap. However Pang Tong will be waiting right behind him to stop
him in his tracks. Attack him with both Guan Yu and Pang Tong, he will go
down quickly.
- Send Pang Tong and Guan Yu into the castle. Have Guan Yu hold a position at
the entrance to the southern path from the center, and have Pang Tong hold
a position at the entrance to the western path from the center.
- Once Zhuge Liang breaks down the castles western gate and engages in battle
with the enemy, wait a few minutes and then retreat outside. The enemy will
follow. Attack him with Zhuge Liang and Guan Ping.
- Once Pang De and Yu Jin arrive wait for Pang De to make his way to the center
of the castle. Once he does attack him with Guan Yu and Pang Tong. Guan Yu
is very effective and attacking Pang De in this battle, and his unit will
go down very quick.
- Once Pang De has been defeated just defeat Cao Ren and the battle is yours.
For "Search for enemy supply troops":
- The enemy supply troops isn't where Guan Ping is heading, it's actually
where Guan Yu is supposed to be heading (unless the location can change from
battle to battle, but every time I played this battle, which was several
times, it was at the same place) which is just a little north of the castles
northeastern corner.
- Knowing this, have Guan Yu and Guan Ping go where they were originally
intended, however have Guan Ping stop and wait when he gets a little north
of the eastern bridge. By the time he gets here Pang De will almost be
here.
- Instead, have Zhuge Liang attack the supply troops since he's headed up to
the northern gate anyway. Have Liu Bei and Pang Tong attack their respective
gates. Once he's attacked the supply troops, have him attack the northern
gate.
- If you had Zhuge Liang go straight for the supply troops once the battle
started, Pang De should show up right after it's been attacked. Attack him
with both Guan Ping and Guan Yu (who should now just be about there). Don't
worry too much about Yu Jin, he's easily taken care of.
- Once Pang De is destroyed have Guan Yu and Guan Ping both attack Cao Ren
along with Liu Bei to end the battle.
- I really advise against using this strategy. Not only does it take forever
to find the supply troops, destroy it hardly does anything to the morale,
not to mention Pang De will show up shortly after you've destroyed it and
just raise morale again. It's really pointless.

- First and foremost, abort Sun Li's current objective and have her head
straight for the enemy supply compound. It's usually somewhere up at the
top right of the map. So send her around the mountains on the right. I've
had it appear either in that little open area surrounded by forest or just
up a little north of that at the edge of the forest. Either way have her
run all the way up there and she should spot it once she gets near it.
- Have Guan Yu, Ma Chao, Zhuge Liang, and Mei Sanniang hold their positions,
and have Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei push up a bit so they're next to them. This
will create a tight line formation, and the enemy will only be able to
fight each of your units 1v1. This battle is basically just holding off
Cao Cao's army until Sun Li can reach the supply compound and destroy it.
This formation is the best way to do it.
- Send Liu Bei up to the right side of the formation to fill in Sun Li's spot
once she has left.
- Once Sun Li finds the supply compound, destroy it. Then have her go through
the small valley on the left to attack Cao Cao from behind (he should be
somewhere near the middle.)
- Jiang Wei should arrive soon. Once he does, also have him head for Cao Cao.
- As enemy units start dropping start using your extra units to gang up on
the remaining enemy forces. Since they should all have at least less then
50% morale, this shouldn't take too long.
- Defeat Cao Cao and the battle is over. Pretty easy battle, despite what it
may have looked like.
For "Position horsemen on left wing":
- I'm basically going to follow the same strategy that I used for the "Position
horsemen on wings" plan, the only real difference here is that it will be
Zhao Yun who will attack the supply compound, and you'll have to do a little
more re arranging in order to get your units into a line, and it won't be
as tight of a formation as in the other plan (which is why I prefer that
one.)
- Form a line with your other units. Have Liu Bei move up next to Zhang Fei,
have Sun Li move down a little then up to fill the opening that Liu Bei has
now left, move Ma Chao down next to her, and have Mei Sanniang, Guan Yu,
Zhang Fei and Zhuge Liang hold their starting positions. As long as you
position your units like this you should be good in avoiding any 2v1
situations.
- Once Zhao Yun finds the supply compound, destroy it. Now the battle is yours.
Enemy morale will be greatly affected. Have Zhao Yun swing around down
through the valley on the left and attach the enemy from behind.
- Jiang Wei should be joining the fight shortly after this. Like Zhao Yun,
have him go down and attack the enemy from behind.
- Find Cao Cao and end this battle (Zhao Yun will probably run into him as
he's flanking them from behind. Attack Cao Cao with Zhao Yun and Jiang Wei
and the battle will be over.)
For "Position bowmen in center":
- Send Mei Sanniang's unit over behind the mountains to the right to search for
the enemy supply compound.
- Have Ma Chao and Zhang Fei hold their current position, move Zhuge Liang up
so he's in between them, move Guan Yu up just a bit so he's in line with
everyone else, move Zhao Yun up so he's between Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, move
Sun Li up so she's next to Ma Chao, and then move Liu Bei up to fill in
Mei Sanniang's spot once she's gone.
- This starting formation is a little harder to form a perfect line in, which
is why I don't really recommend it versus the other two formations. However
it is still possible, just might take one or two tries. Whatever you do,
the main thing with this battle is to just avoid getting into battles 2v1.
- Hold off Cao Cao's army while you wait for Mei Sanniang to find the enemy
supply compound. Once it's found, destroy it to turn the tide of battle
in your favor.
- Send Mei Sanniang and Jiang Wei (when he shows up) to attack Cao Cao from
behind.
- You should be victorious in no time.

- Within a few seconds of the battle starting Ma Dai will defect to your side.
- Have Ma Dai and Ma Chao attack Deng Ai.
- Move Sun Li, Zhuge Liang, Zhao Yun and Liu Bei over to the left to engage
in combat with Cai Wengi.
- There will be three Cai Wengi units over to the left, they're all fake, just
defeat them all.
- Once you defeat all three decoy Cai Wengi's, the real one will appear on
the east side of the map. I usually just have Ma Chao and Ma Dai sitting
there waiting for her. Her defeat should come pretty swiftly since it's
6v1...
For "Cast Mirage":

for a while.

Wengi units.
- Once the real Cai Wengi shows up quickly march your whole army over to the

- Have Jiang Wei attack the southern gate with Zhang Fei waiting outside
instead. Have Liu Bei attack the west gate while Zhuge Liang waits, and have
Zhao Yun go up to the north gate like planned.
- The reason I have Jiang Wei abort his mission is because if he fakes Zhao
Yun then Sima Yi will pull away from the north gate and go reinforce the
eastern gate, and attack Jiang Wei's unit with arrows as he tries to break
it down. Plus if Sima Yi is at the northern gate when Zhao Yun uses the
gargantua to break down the gate then he will lose a lot of morale.
- Once Zhao Yun opens up the northern gate with the gargantua engage in battle
with Sima Yi.
- Have Liu Bei lure out Xiahou Ba after a few minutes of fighting and then
attack him with Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang.
- Have Jiang Wei lure out Xiahou Dun after a few minutes of fighting and then
attack him with both Jiang Wei and Zhang Fei.
- Zhange He was chillin around Xiahou Ba's unit for me, if you run into him
just engage him in battle until Zhao Yun can take out Sima Yi. Just ignore
Guo Shao, he usually just hangs out around the eastern gate.
- Zhao Yun will probably be able to take down Sima Yi before you even defeat
any of the other generals, he's pretty beastly, plus it helps that Sima Yi's
morale will have taken a big hit.
For "Give appearance of larger army":
- Have Mei Sanniang attack the western gate while Liu Bei and Zhang Fei wait
outside. Let Zhuge Liang go to the northern gate and give the appearance of a
larger army, however do NOT have him start attacking the gate just set.
Let Zhao Yun go to the southern gate and open it with the gargantua.
- Once Zhao Yun opens the southern gate with the gargantua, have Zhuge Liang
start attacking the north gate. By this time, Sima Yi should start moving
down to where Xiahou Ba is being attacked. Have Zhao Yun go around and
attack him from behind.
- The reason why I like the other strategy compared to this one is because
Sima Yi's position differs more often. When I would play with the "Fake Zhao
Yun" strategy, Sima Yi would almost always be guarding the northern gate.
However every time I used this strategy Sima Yi would kind of be floating
around, usually assisting Xiahou Dun's unit guarding the northern gate and
then he would move down to assist Xiahou Ba once he realized it was a fake
and Zhao Yun broke through the southern gate. Personally I think it's just
easier to use the other strategy and defeat Sima Yi with his lowered morale
from attacking his gate.
- Have your units focus on defeating their respective officers. One thing you
could try is having Zhang Fei climb the walls near the southern portion of
the western gate, and then attacking Xiahou Ba while Mei Sanniang attacks
from the gate (this is if you don't feel like waiting for Mei Sanniang to
break through the gate, personally I recommend you just wait for her to break
through the gate then let Xiahou Ba come out and attack him 3v1, then just
keep repeating for the next officer that comes through the gate since they
will gather around here.)
- Work on getting a flank attack on Sima Yi with Zhao Yun's unit and the battle
will be yours.

Guan Yu: Lead enemy to eastern outpost
Zhao Yun: Lead enemy to western outpost
Pang Tong: Force enemy into retreat (recommended)
I recommend Pang Tong's strategy because it let's you get the most experience
out of the battle (which, regardless of which plan you choose, isn't very
hard.) The main point to using the other two plans is to just hold off the
enemy while Liu Bei escapes through to the staging point. You won't end up
defeating many officers this way, but if you're really having problems winning
using Pang Tong's strategy just give either of the other two a try, they're
both pretty much the same.

- Once you start the battle you will get a message stating that the enemy units
believed the false report and are sending reinforcements to Chang An. Let
everyone carry out their default objective.
- Let your units head to their default objective. Have Liu Bei head to the left
with Pang Tong and Zhao Yun.
- If you picked Pang Tong's political policy, Xu Shu will either defect after
Guan Yu and Zhuge Liang have pushed forward into the eastern forest a little
or he will be in front of the eastern gate and will defect there. If not,
then you'll just have to fight him.
- Xu Huang will be outside one of the gates. The one time I played he was
outside the eastern gate, the other time it was the western gate. So it seems
to change. Either way, it's just him so just gang up on him with your units
of whatever side of the map he's on.
- Have Zhao Yun work on breaking through the western gate with Pang Tong
waiting outside, and have Zhuge Liang work on breaking through the eastern
gate while Guan Yu and Xu Shu (if you have him) finish off Xu Huang (if he's
on the eastern side that is, if not just do the same thing on the other
side with your other officers.)
- As long as you're fighting Xu Huang with both Guan Yu and Xu Shu, he should
easily drop before Zhuge Liang breaks through the eastern gate. Once he does,
have Guan Yu and Xu Shu wait outside the eastern gate.
- Once the gates are open have Pang Tong and Zhao Yun fight the enemy
officers for a bit, fall back and then fight the enemy 3v1 when they come
out of the gate.
- Eventually you will see an event where the enemy units that went back to
Chang An have come back. Whichever gate they decide to concentrate their
forces on (probably the western) just have your other units come through the
opposite gate once they're done with their enemies and attack them from the
back. They'll go down pretty quickly that way.
- Once all of the enemies are out of the way lead Liu Bei to the staging point
to win the battle.
For "Lead enemy to eastern outpost":
- Send everyone to the western gate.
- If you choose Pang Tong's political policy then once your units get about
halfway through the left area Xu Shu will defect to Liu Bei.
- Up ahead on the left side will be Pang De and Xu Huang. Engage them in battle
with your units, try to gang up on them (send Zhao Yun up and around through
the small left valley so he can attack them from behind.)
- Have Zhuge Liang block the small valley connecting the two larger areas,
this way he can hold off all of the enemy units that are on the right side
with his strong magic while the rest of your army works on quickly clearing
the western gate. Make sure he's pushed up a little so the enemy notices
him and is drawn towards him.
- One thing I like to do is once the western gate is clear, send one unit such
as Zhao Yun or someone in front of Liu Bei and have him stand guard at that
little narrow path right in front of the staging point, a little to the right
of it. The rest of Cao Cao's army should be on the right side anyway below
the gate by now, but just incase one decides to try to come back up and
stop Liu Bei from reaching the staging point Zhao Yun/whoever you placed
there can just hold them off.
- Simply have Liu Bei move up to the staging point from the western gate. The
only bad thing about this strategy is you won't get all the extra experience
points from defeating a lot of the officers, since you'll just be mainly
holding most of them off.
For "Lead enemy to western outpost":
- You can pretty much use the same strategy I have for "Lead enemy to eastern
outpost", obviously just flip flop everything.

- This battle isn't as tough as it may seem, it's just the beginning of the
battle that can seem like it's going to be hard.
- Immediately move Liu Bei and Guan Yu's unit up to the north section of the
map. Guan Yu will probably keep getting into battle, just keep retreating
for now. Or, one other strategy I have found that works pretty well is this:
I retreat with Guan Yu to the north until I'm about in the middle of the
little island. Then I just let him get attacked there and I use all of his
officers special abilities to wear down whatever unit he's fighting as much
as possible. This usually causes the enemy to literally circle Guan Yu, and
while his defeat is pretty much guaranteed at this point, it puts the enemy
units in a good formation to attack them once your backup arrives.
- Don't be too upset if Guan Yu is defeated during this battle, it's pretty
much a given thing.
- Shortly after Liu Bei makes it to the top Zhang Fei will arrive. Send Zheng
Fei down to the left side to attack enemies there, send Liu Bei down to
attack enemies on the right side. Guan Yu will probably be defeated around
this time.
- When Sun Li and Zhao Yun arrive have Sun Li head to the left and help Zhang
Fei while Zhao Yun heads down to the right to help Liu Bei.
- When Zhuge Liang arrives send him down towards Liu Bei and Zhao Yun. By this
time Zhou Yu will probably be pushing you from the northeastern side of the
little island. Have Zhuge Liang intercept him and fight him so he can't
surround any of your units.
- Mei Sanniang and Ma Chao will arrive shortly as well. The battle is pretty
much over at this point; you will greatly outnumber Sun Quan's army and they
will go down easy by surrounding them.
- Once Sun Quan himself shows up hunt him down and destroy him (he comes in at
the bottom right corner of the map and makes his way up north along the
eastern side of the little island.)

- This battle really isn't that difficult. First move all of your units (except
Ma Chao and Zhuge Liang) down to the edge of the forest in front of the
supply compound (Mei Sanniang, Sun Li and Zhang Fei should be around where
Ma Chao and Zhuge Liang start the battle.)
- Have Zhuge Liang and Ma Chao carry out their default objective.
- Moving your units down to the forest area here will draw out about half of
Cao Cao's army. They will rush you. Engage in battle with them. It shouldn't
be hard to defeat them, you'll have a large arsenal of powerful special
abilities at your disposal. Most of the times I've played this battle the
units that push down tend to navigate towards your units on the right side
(where the entrance to the supply compound is). You can move your units from
the left over and around to gang up on the enemy that pushes you.
- Shortly after Ma Chao engages Hu Zhi, Zhuge Liang should set up his arbalests
and attack her with it. I suggest you duel her with Ma Chao after this as
her morale should be lower then his.
- After Hu Zhi is defeated and Zhuge Liang reaches his objective area and
gets rid of Himiko, send Ma Chao and Zhuge Liang up over the north bridge
and near the area of the second bridge. Don't have them cross it yet.
- Once all of the Wei units who have pushed you are defeated, push up with your
entire army. You'll run into the rest of Cao Cao's troops (Sima Yi, Xu Shu,
Cao Ren, Cheng Yu, and Cao Cao). Stop advancing and let the rest of the Wei
army advance to you. This will draw Cao Cao away from his supply compound
and down to the front lines.
- Once this happens cross the bridge with Zhuge Liang and send him to the
little forested area directly to the right. The supply compound will be
there. Destroy it.
- The battle is essentially won now (if it hasn't been already....) I usually
send Ma Chao right down to Cao Cao to attack him from behind. By this point
it's usually just Cao Cao, and with half of his morale gone from a destroyed
supply compound and several units attacking him at once, he's going to go
down quickly.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
If you're playing as Cao Cao then that means you've already beaten the game on
Liu Bei's side, therefore you should have a pretty good understanding of the
game and what to do to win. I wouldn't really say any of the battles are
harder on Cao Cao's side (in fact I found a lot of the beginning battles to be
easier then they were on Liu Bei's side because you greatly overpower him).
However one thing I've noticed is that the enemy units seem to use their own
special abilities a lot more frequently during this half of the game as
opposed to when you played as Liu Bei. You'll probably only need to refer to
these strategies if you get stuck in a certain part, I encourage you to try
to win the battles on your own with your own tactics.

Xiahou Yuan: Attack Guan Yu and Zhang Fei troops
Xun Yu: Set up ambush (recommended)
Whichever strategy you choose, this battle should be a breeze. Cao Cao's units
are much more powerful then Liu Bei's (especially Xiahou Yuan, he's a beast.)
However I think Xun Yu's plan is the best.

- Move Xiahou Yuan forward a bit, and have Cao Cao cross the bridge. Xuan Yuan
will find Guan Yu and Zhang Fei pushing him shortly. He'll engage in battle
with Guan Yu. By the time Zhang Fei gets to him, Cao Cao should have crossed
the bridge. Engage Zhang Fei in battle with Cao Cao.
- Let Cao Ren and Yu Jin stay where they are and wait for Mei Sanniang push up
and fall into their trap. She'll go down quickly 2v1.
- You should easily be able to defeat Guan Yu with Xiahou Yuan before Zhao Yun
shows up. Zhang Fei will probably be near defeat as well by the time Zhao
Yun shows up.
- Once Zhao Yun shows up, fight him with Xiahou Yuan and Cao Cao (once Zhang
Fei is defeated.)
- Once Mei Sanniang is defeated, let Liu Bei fall into the same trap and the
battle will be won shortly.
For "Attack Guan Yu and Zhang Fei troops":
- Have Cao Cao move a little to the left of the bridge that he's defending.
This way Mei Sanniang can cross the bridge and you don't have to fight her
on it, limiting the number of special abilities you can use.
- Advance on Guan Yu and Zhang Fei with the rest of your army. You should be
able to take them down no problem.
- Once Mei Sanniang crosses the bridge, attack her with Cao Cao (make sure you
keep an eye on this, do not let her destroy the supply compound!)
- Guan Yu and Zhang Fei should be just about done with by the time Zhao Yun
arrives. Quickly finish them off and focus Xiahou Yuan and Cao Ren on Zhao
Yun. Send Yu Jin down to attack Liu Bei, who should be waiting at the bottom
of the bridge where Mei Sanniang is at.
- Once Mei Sanniang is taken care of, attack Liu Bei from the other side of
the bridge with Cao Cao. He should go down quickly.

Xun Yu: Force refugees to farm
Cheng Yu: Spread rumors among enemy troops
Cao Ren: Train troops (recommended)
I believe now is a good time to start building up your officers stats, so I
suggest training the troops. Spreading rumors just lowers Liu Bei's forces
by 10%, not enough to make much of a difference. And you already have a good
advantage over Liu Bei in supply and morale, so I don't think Xun Yu's plan
is that great either.
Whichever plan you choose, this battle is easy. Although if you choose Cheng
Yu's plan it will be VERY easy. The only bad thing about choosing the sleeping
draughts over destroying the bridge is if you choose Cheng Yu then you'll miss
out on a lot of experience and fame points for defeating all of the enemy
units. If you choose Cheng Yu you really only need to defeat two units
(and that's including Liu Bei.)

- At the start of the battle you will see a scene where Guan Yu and Zhang Fei's
troops are all asleep. They will lose a good deal of morale and will be
temporarily out of the battle.
- Have your units move to their default objective. Once Cao Ren and Hu Zhi have
pushed over the bridge and about halfway through the next area they will
spot Mei Sanniang. Send both of them down to fight her.
- Have Xun Yu push down into the area and go to the left of Cao Ren and Hu Zhi.
She should spot Liu Bei down by the bridge and will start going right
towards him. I usually move her down to the left (by that little forested
area to the left of the bridge) and just have her wait there for Liu Bei to
come and fight her.
- Once Cao Cao is over the bridge have him go down and fight Liu Bei as well.
- By this time Mei Sanniang should be defeated. Move Cao Ren or Hu Zhi down
towards the bridge and they should spot Zhao Yun. Engage him.
- Liu Bei will probably be defeated before Zhao Yun. You'll never even see
Guan Yu or Zhang Fei.
For "Destroy bridge, divide enemy":
- This battle isn't really harder, it's just going to take longer. However
you'll get a lot more experience and fame since you'll be defeating all of
the Shu officers. This strategy is more of a brute force strategy, but it
shouldn't be hard since your officers are much more powerful then the Shu
officers.
- Have your units carry out their default objective. Let Xun Yu's unit destroy
the bridge.
- Have Cao Ren fight Guan Yu once he spots him.
- Have Hu Zhi fight Zhang Fei once she spots him.
- Guan Yu and Zhang Fei should be just about dead by the time Zhao Yun's unit
shows up (usually with Mei Sanniang close behind.)
- Engage in battle with Zhao Yun and Mei Sanniang then.
- When Liu Bei finally gets to the scene most everyone should either already be
defeated or just on the brink of defeat. One thing you could do is send
one unit all the way down to the supply compound and destroy it to make this
battle even quicker.
- Simply defeat Liu Bei and you've won.

Cao Ren: Enlist Xu Huang (recommended)
Cao Bu: Develop new weapon
Xiahou Yuan: Recruit troops
Obviously I would recommend enlisting Xu Huang. He's a pretty solid officer
who will be of much use in future battles. If you choose to develop a new
weapon you will develop the mortar which will be attached to Xiahou Yuan's
unit. The reason I don't use this choice is because Xiahou Yuan's unit is
already extremely buffed; he doesn't really need any extra help taking down
enemy units, especially not in this battle. So I don't really see the point
to using it, but to each their own.
This is another one of those battles where none of the war council plans really
differ in difficulty. I didn't find any one particular plan that made the
battle super easy or anything, they all just kind of change what unit pushes
where. I only recommend Xun Yu's plan because usually that's the one I can
end up winning the fastest while still defeating most of the enemy units.

- Have Yu Jin and Cao Cao head to the south instead of the center. Have all
other units carry out their default objectives.
- Let Xiahou Yuan and Zhang Fei fight, and have Cao Ren attack Guan Ping
from behind, while Himiko then attacks him from the front.
- Mei Sanniang, Guan Yu, and Zhuge Liang (usually appearing a little later)
will all push up towards the middle where Cao Ren is. Usually Mei Sanniang
and Zhuge Liang will attack Cao Ren. Send Cao Cao to intercept Zhuge Liang
and Yu Jin to go fight Guan Yu (or vice versa, doesn't really matter.)
I don't intercept both Zhuge Liang and Mei Sanniang because once you
intercept Zhuge Liang Cao Ren will just attack Mei Sanniang by himself.
Therefore I just send someone to go start working on Guan Yu.
- Once Xiahou Yuan defeats Zhang Fei have him go around and attack Zhuge Liang
from the north.
- Guan Ping should fall quickly since both Cao Ren and Himiko were attacking
him for a bit. Try to defeat Guan Yu and Mei Sanniang before Zhuge Liang for
the extra experience and fame points.
- Defeat Zhuge Liang to win.
For "Decoy Guan Ping's troops (center)":
- Have all units push their default objective.
- Let Xiahou Yuan and Guan Ping fight at the center pathway.
- Have Cao Ren and Guan Yu fight. Send Yu Jin up to intercept Mei Sanniang,
and have Himiko attack Guan Yu from behind.
- Zhuge Liang will usually try to come around and attack Cao Ren from behind.
Have Cao Cao go all the way around at the bottom and attack him. If he
runs into Zhang Fei on the way just attack him, Cao Ren should be OK to
handle Zhuge Liang by himself anyway (since he will just fall back from the
battle with Guan Yu so long as Himiko is attacking him, which she should be.)
- Defeat Zhuge Liang to win.
For "Decoy Guan Yu's troops (south)":
- Send Yu Jin down to the center path, and have all other units carry out their
default objective.
- Fight Guan Yu with Xiahou Yuan.
- Attack Zhang Fei with both Cao Ren and Himiko.
- If Guan Ping falls down to the southern area by Guan Yu, have Yu Jin push
through the middle area and push forward a bit to find Mei Sanniang. If you
go and attempt to attack Guan Ping from behind, Mei Sanniang will usually
just come from behind and attack you, leaving you fighting on two fronts.
- By this time Guan Yu and Zhang Fei should almost be defeated. Once Zhang Fei
is down have Cao Ren push south a little to find Zhuge Liang. Fight him,
and send Cao Cao down through the middle forest area to fight him too.
- If he needs it, have Himiko head south to help Yu Jin.
- Defeat Zhuge Liang to win.

Xun Yu: Force refugees to farm
Cheng Yu: Threaten enemy troops

Threatening the enemy troops won't really make much of a difference for the
next battle, and you should be fine on terms of supply and morale. Therefore
I would train your officers to get some additional experience (especially
if you're going to choose Zhang Liao's plan in the war council.)
I highly recommend Zhang Liao's plan as it's much easier then Xun Yu's. The
only advantage Xun Yu's plan has over Zhang Liao's is that you'll get more
experience and fame points since you'll be defeating most of Liu Bei's units.
However there is a much, much greater chance of Liu Bei reaching the staging
point (especially if you mess up just a big with your until placements) if
you avoid the forest. However if you take the forest, you'll run into Liu
Bei and stop him no problem.

- Have all units carry out their default objective.
- Yu Jin's unit will be the first to enter the eastern forest. He will run into
mines. Even though it will take a big hit to his morale and troop number,
it's not really anything to worry about. Have him go through the left side
of the forest and Cao Cao through the right.
- As your units approach the center they will find Guan Yu and Guan Ping and
engage them in battle. Have Zhang Liao engage Guan Yu for a special cut
scene. If you wish you can just send your two units in the back over to the
left to fight Zhang Fei and Luo Luo since they will eventually make their
way over to your guys anyway.
- Shortly after you've pushed through the forest you'll spot Liu Bei. Just
gang up on him with all your units there and he'll go down quick.
- Liu Bei will probably be defeated before Zhuge Liang or Mei Sanniang can
even make it onto the battlefield.
For "Pursue, avoiding forest":
- Ok, for this strategy you have to be quick, and you must make sure you do
exactly as I say with your units, as this has been the ONLY way I've ever
been able to make this strategy work (perhaps you can figure out a better
way, if so let me know!)
- Let both your units on the left and the center push their default objective.
- Once they spot the enemies (Zhang Fei + Luo Luo on left, Guan Yu + Guan Ping
in center) have them all STOP, and hold their position.
- Let the enemy come up and engage in battle with them with your first two
units. The reason for letting them come up and engage you is because it draws
them away from their post, and lets your two units in the back go around and
through the area they were guarding.
- Have your two units in the back on the left go around your units in battle
and cross the bridge. Do the same with the units in the center; have them
go around the battle and through the valley in the center.
- If something happens to your two units in the back as they try to move around
the enemy (they get caught up in battle or something) I would suggest
resetting and trying again. Although, if you can get at least ONE unit
to break through on each side (the left and the center), I think you should
still be ok for beating the stage. It's not absolutely necessary for both
units to break through, but it will help for fighting Liu Bei (and when
Zhuge Liang and Mei Sanniang show up.)
- Send your units that have crossed the bridge/gone through the center valley
down to where the staging point is. I would usually run into Liu Bei by
the bottom bridge, so you can also send them there. He should be around that</pre><pre id="faqspan-4">
area, so once you find him engage in battle with him at least with one unit
so his march to the staging point can be halted. Fight him with as many
units as you have down there.
- Zhuge Liang will probably show up soon. This is why it's helpful to have
four units down where Liu Bei is, so you can send two of them over to fight
Zhuge Liang. At least make sure you send one unit over to fight him, and
make sure someone is still fighting Liu Bei.
- By the time Mei Sanniang shows up your other units all the way at the top
of the map should have been able to take care of all the other enemies. You
should have them pushing down and they should be near the southern bridge
area. Have them engage in battle with Mei Sanniang.
- Once Liu Bei is defeated you win. This is a lot more work then the other
strategy, but like I said, you get all that extra experience and fame points
for defeating all those additional units. Likewise, when I would play the
other strategy I usually would only defeat Liu Bei and maybe one other unit.

Xiahou Ba: Pressure enemy troops
Cheng Yu: Cause rifts among enemy
Zhang Liao: Raise morale with poetry (recommended)
Choosing Cheng Yu's plan will cause Gan Ning and Zhang Fei to get into a fight
at the start of the battle and lose a few thousand troops. Honestly this
really doesn't have much of an impact on the battle, and it doesn't really
make either unit especially easier to defeat. Therefore I recommend either
raising morale or pressuring the enemy troops (either way they pretty much
have the same effect: Zhang Liao's plan gives you +10 morale, while Xiahou Ba's
plan gives the enemy -10 morale, so either way you have an advantage of 10
morale over the enemy.)

Zhang Liao: Concentrate attack on Sun Quan
Himiko: Concentrate attack on Liu Bei (recommended)
Xun Yu: Chained Ship plan
I'm kind of on the fence about these plans. For one the chained ship plan is
good for the reason that it allows you to do more damage to the enemy with
what limited special abilities you can use. However at the same time the
main way this battle will be won is by surrounding enemy units, not really by
using special abilities (of course they do help.) Therefore I think Himiko's
plan is better because for one, Liu Bei has more units. And secondly, once
Liu Bei is defeated any remaining Shu units will greatly lose morale, thus
making them fall even quicker. If you defeat Sun Quan, nothing happens to any
remaining Wu units (why this is, I don't know.)

**NOTE**
I hate, hate this battle. I really do. I hate naval battles in this game in
general, but on Cao Cao's side, it just really annoys me for some reason. I've
tried to give the best strategy for each war policy here, but just remember
that when it comes down to it, all you need to do in this game to win naval
battles is just surround the enemy. I guess the main reason I hate this is
because a lot of the times I would play my units would get bunched together
and I would try to move them but they would take forever to move, and they
would never do what I told them too... it's just frustrating. So bear with me
on this... thanks.
***NOTE***
One other thing, don't worry about Zhuge Liang's fire attack. It only happens
after 3/4th's of the battle timer is gone. Yes, 3/4ths. So basically if you're
still fighting this battle at that point you're probably getting worked on
pretty good, so you might as well just reset and try again anyway. As long as
you aren't getting stomped on this battle should be won way, way before the
fire attack.
For "Concentrate attack on Liu Bei":
- The default objective set for your units is pretty good, so let them continue
on with that as the battle starts.
- Attack Guan Yu with Zhang Liao.
- Attack Mei Sanniang with Cao Ren and have Yu Jin surround her.
- Have Xiahou Dun attack Gan Ning and have Xiahou Ba surround him. There is a
good (very good) chance that Xiahou Dun will get surrounded and not make it
through this battle. And to be honest, every time I've played this battle on
every different war council plan, I was never able to finish a battle with
all my units still alive. So just accept the fact that not everyone will make
it. Instead, focus on keeping Xiahou Dun alive as long as possible to hold
off Wu while you take care of Shu.
- Have Cheng Yu attack Liu Bei, and make sure you get someone else down there
ASAP to surround him (I suggest either sending Xun Yu all the way around the
left side to come up and surround him from behind, or send down Yu Jin to
surround him instead of Mei Sanniang.)
- Once Liu Bei is defeated the rest of the Shu forces will drop pretty quickly
due to the lowered morale. Now you should have a large number advantage on
Wu. Simply work your units over to them and start surrounding them. Once Sun
Quan is defeated the battle will be won.
For "Concentrate attack on Sun Quan":
- Push to your default objectives until you spot the entire Wu army.
- Send Zhang He to fight Zhou Yu, and have Xiahou Dun surround him.
- Have Zhang Liao attack Taishi Ci and let Cheng Yu surround him.
- Have Xiahou Ba attack Sun Quan, and send Hu Zhi all the way over to the right
and around to surround him from behind. The only downfall about this is it
takes Hu Zhi a little while to get there, but every time I played this I
never had enough room to have a unit come directly down to surround him. So
oh well I guess.
- At this point I would probably send Cao Cao over to the left side to help
out over there since the Shu army should start attacking by this point.
- Have Yu Jin attack Gan Ning and Xun Yu surround him. You can send over Cao
Ren to surround him also, but he'll probably be getting attacked by Zhang
Fei soon anyway.
- Once Gan Ning is defeated have Yu Jin and Xun Yu help out with defeating the
Shu officers.
- Once Wu has been taken out send all your extra units over to surround Shu.
Work on getting Liu Bei surrounded if you want a quick end to the battle.
For "Chained Ship plan":
- First of all move all of your units over to the right. Might as well just
focus on Liu Bei.
- Just focus on not getting surrounded as the enemy pushes up. I suggest having
someone over on the right just as bait so Wu can focus on them. They'll be
defeated but oh well, it's bound to happen to someone anyway.
- Concentrate on surrounding Liu Bei so the rest of the Shu units morale drops
once he retreats.
- Once Shu is done with, just take out Wu.

Cheng Yu: Take turns attacking
Xun Yu: Send unit around to enemy rear
Sima Yi: Set ambush near supply compound (recommended)
This battle is really easy, it doesn't really matter which plan you choose. I
recommend Sima Yi's plan just because I can usually win the quickest that way

- Abort Himiko and Cao Cao's objective, have them just hold their position
for now.
- Have Zhang Liao attack the southern gate while Xiahou Dun waits up at the
top section of the gate and Cao Ren waits at the bottom.
- Let Yu Jin go about his default objective.
- Fight Pang De with Zhang Liao's unit. After you've fought him for about a
minute just retreat and have him follow you outside the gate and attack him
with all three units.
- Ma Dai will push out of the northern gate and attack Sima Yi's unit. Use
your magic and then attack him with Xiahou Ba as well.
- Once Deng Ai appears up by Ma Dai send Himiko and Cao Cao up to attack him.
- Around this time Yu Jin should run into Xu Shu up in the northern forest
area. Just get rid of him, he's pretty easy.
- Jiang Wei should make his way down to the southern gate. Once Pang De is
done with just use the same strategy against him.
- When Ma Dai and Deng Ai have been defeated take your units and start having
them push through the northern gate.
- Ma Chao is usually hanging out right by the mountains in between the two
gates. Just attack him with all you got. Yu Jin should be just about in
position to flank him by now. Either way he'll go down fast.
For "Take turns attacking":
- Have Himiko and Cao Cao go take the northern route to flank the enemy
instead.
- Have Cao Ren attack the northern gate while Zhang Liao waits up top and
Xiahou Dun waits at the bottom outside.
- Have Xiahou Ba attack the southern gate while Sima Yi waits up top and Yu Jin
waits at the bottom outside.
- Once Cao Ren breaks through the northern gate attack Ma Dai for a bit, then
have him retreat. Once Mai Dai follows him through the gate attack him with
all three units.
- Do the same thing at the southern gate: Have Xiahou Ba engage in battle with
Pang De for a bit, retreat, then attack him with all three units once he is
out of the gate.
- Ma Dai should retreat pretty quickly. Once he does just sit tight with your
three units, Ma Chao will foolishly come storming through the gate and fall
right into the same trap.
- Xu Shu is hiding up in the northern area. If you find him with Cao Cao or
Himiko just attack him, he's pretty weak. Otherwise send Cao Cao and Himiko
around to attack Deng Ai or Jiang Wei from the back.
- Being attacked by three units, Ma Chao should fall pretty quickly. Probably
even before you can attack from behind with Cao Cao.
For "Send unit around to enemy rear":
- Let Xun Yu and Yu Jin advance up north. Have Himiko attack the northern gate
while Zhang Liao waits up top and have Cao Cao wait at the bottom outside.
- Have Xiahou Dun attack the southern gate while Sima Yi waits outside at the
top and Cao Ren waits at the bottom.
- Engage in battle with Xu Shu up north once you find him.
- Use the ol' gate strategy here: Engage in battle with Ma Dai and Pang De,
then retreat to draw them out of the gate, then attack them with all three
units outside. Easy stuff.
- Once Ma Dai and Pang De are defeated just chill outside and wait for the
next two enemies to come through the gates. Defeat them the same way.
- By this time Xu Shu should be dead and Yu Jin and Xun Yu will have crossed
the bridge and are pushing from behind. Have them both attack Ma Chao and
bring an end to this battle. (Ma Chao was hanging out near the northern
gate each time I played this.)

Xun Yu: Cao Cao attempts persuasion
Hu Zhi: Hu Zhi acts as guard (recommended)
Himiko: Himiko acts as guard
Ok there is really no beneficial reason to choose either of the other two plans
over Hu Zhi's. They just make the battle much harder then needed. Choosing
Hu Zhi's plan gets Deng Ai to defect. Choosing Xun Yu's plan also gets Deng Ai
to defect, but then the real Cai Wengi will show up, and now you got an extra
unit to worry about right from the start before you can start taking down any
other units. And worst of all, Himiko's plan doesn't even get Deng Ai to
defect, so now you have to defeat him too. Just choose Hu Zhi's plan to make
life easy, but of course I have provided a strategy for all three options...

- Once the battle starts Deng Ai will defect to Cao Cao's forces. Attack Ma
Dai with Hu Zhi and Deng Ai.
- Send Cao Cao to the right to help Xiahou Dun. Send Cheng Yu to the left to
help Himiko.
- Don't push to the enemy once you spot them, let them come to you. Stay close
to the supply compound to keep morale high and to quickly recharge your
special abilities.
- Ma Dai will probably be the first to be defeated since he's getting 2v1'd.
Once he's gone send Hu Zhi and Deng Ai to help out with defeating the fake
Cai Wengi's (I would send them over to the right side, since Himiko and
Cheng Yu shouldn't need any help to take out the fake Cai Wengi's.)
- Once you have defeated the four fake Cai Wengi's the real one will show
up southeast of your supply compound, in the little open area of land by
the sea. Just send all your units down to attack her and she'll go down
quickly. (Sometimes she would show up after I had defeated three of the
fake Cai Wengi's. I'm not sure if she just automatically shows up after the
battle timer hits a certain time or not. But she will definitely show up
after the fourth fake unit is defeated. If someone could verify this it
would be appreciated.)
For "Cao Cao attempts persuasion":
- I do not recommend this plan over Hu Zhi's. You'll see why in a minute.
- Once the battle starts Cao Cao will ask Deng Ai to defect. He will, and he
will also show Cao Cao where the real Cai Wengi is. The real Cai Wengi will
then show up on the map to the southeast of the supply compound, that little
strip of unforrested land by the sea.
- This would be great... if that meant the fake Cai Wengi units would
disappear. They don't. So now there's an extra unit for you to worry about
on the battlefield (and Cai Wengi is pretty tough. High morale, high troop
count, and good special abilities. Not to mention Iron Wall!)
- You can either attempt to cut down Ma Dai quickly by attacking him with
Cao Cao and Deng Ai, or send one of them down (preferably Cao Cao) to deal
with the real Cai Wengi (or one of the fake Cai Wengi's, while someone else
takes care of the real one.)
- Stay near the supply compound and use all of your special abilities as soon
as possible. They'll regenerate quicker if you're by the supply compound
anyway.
- Just defeat the real Cai Wengi to win, don't worry about the fakes.
For "Himiko acts as guard":
- Ok there really is no reason to choose this. When the battle starts Himiko
will taunt Deng Ai and he won't defect to Cao Cao's forces. So now not only
do you miss out on not getting a good officer, but you have to fight an
extra unit.
- If for whatever reason you do decide to use this strategy (why...?) then the
best thing to probably do would be to send Cao Cao to fight Deng Ai and
send Himiko to fight Ma Dai.
- I would send Cheng Yu over to the right so Xiahou Dun doesn't get ganged up
on. Hu Zhi is able to handle a 2v1 better then Xiahou Dun.
- Try to quickly defeat some of the fake Cai Wengi's so you can get the
advantage in number and you can start ganging up on them.
- Stay close to the supply compound to keep morale up and recharge special
abilities quicker.
- Once the real Cai Wengi shows up surround her and defeat her to win.

VICTORY: Zhang Fei retreats
DEFEAT: Cao Cao retreats/Time runs out
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Political Policy
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
- Two units should be pushing up from the east. They should reach you first.
Engage in battle with them with Cao Cao and Zhang He.
- Have Zhang Liao hold off whatever units come from the west.
- Work on quickly defeating one of the enemy units (Ma Su will probably be the
quickest to take down) so it's 3v3 and one of your units can't get double
teamed.
- Shortly into battle Sima Yi and Xiahou Ba will arrive at the bottom left
corner of the map and advance towards the enemy supply compound. By this time
most of the enemy units that pushed you should either be defeated or just
about defeated. Start sending your units down to assist in taking out the
supply compound and Zhang Fei.
- Have Xiahou Ba attack Zhang Fei and Sima Yi attack Li Li. I usually then
send Cao Cao down from the other side to attack the supply compound. Let
Zhang He and Zhang Liao finish off whatever other units remain up top (if
there even are any.)
- Zhang Fei and Li Li will go down quickly once the supply compound is burned.
- P.S.: Duel Zhang Fei with Xiahou Ba in this battle for a special duel
sequence.
For "Split and attack":
- The first thing you should do is have Xiahou Ba and Sima Yi hold their
positions. I say this because this battle seems to play out with two
possible scenarios. Either four enemy units will come charging down the
center towards the supply compound or it will be two down the center and
two on the right side.
- Have Zhang He and Zhang Liao push forward but send them to the right a
little. If you spot just two units, have Sima Yi and Xiahou Ba push down on
the right side to engage in the other two coming that way. If you see all
four units, have them come over to the center to fight them there.
- Either way, once you know where the enemy is coming from, have Cao Cao come
down the middle.
- Shouldn't have any problem taking down the enemy units, just use all of
your special abilities.
- Once the enemy units pushing for your supply compound have been defeated just
push down towards the enemy supply compound. There you'll find Zhang Fei and
one other unit (if only two units pushed the middle, it will be Li Li, if
all four units pushed the middle it will be Ma Su). Just defeat them. You
can send someone to destroy the supply compound while Zhang Fei and the other
unit are preoccupied to make the battle end quicker, but it's pretty much
over at this point anyway.
For "Deploy fake troops at supply compound":
- Have Cao Cao and Zhang Liao hang behind by the supply compound to guard it.
Let everyone else go about their default objective.
- Xiahou Ba will be the first to go through the little western valley. Once he
does he will run over some mines. I wouldn't worry about it too much, it
won't damage him that badly. Just make sure that the other two units behind
him go over the SAME SIDE that he does so they also don't run into the other
pair of mines.
- There should be three enemy units guarding the supply compound. Just take
them out. It gets a little cluttered down there so you will probably only
be able to fight 2v2, usually Zhang Fei's unit kind of just stays behind.
- Three enemy units should be pushing the supply compound from the east. The
first one will run over the decoy troops and hit the mine field. It will
greatly damage them. Just engage in battle with Zhang Liao and Cao Cao.
- If you manage to defeat the enemies on the east before the ones by the supply
compound (which you probably will) just send Zhang Liao and Cao Cao down
to hit the enemy supply compound from the other side. The battle will be
over shortly after that.

- Once the battle starts you will see a scene where Yu Jin is caught trying to
set fire to the enemy supply compound. It then says he's kidnapped. Don't

- Have Pang De fight Ma Chao on the right.

- Cao Ren will fight Guan Yu and Guan Ping on the bottom.
- Have Cao Cao go around the left side of the castle to attack Guan Ping from
behind (make sure Sun Li and Zhou Cang are inside the castle before he does,
so he doesn't run into them.)
- If instead of Guan Yu attacking at the south gate he tries to come around
up top, I suggest restarting and trying again.
- After a little while Yu Jin will show up again, and he'll be heading for the
supply compound. He'll launch a surprise attack on Pang Tong, who's guarding
it. Take him out as quickly as you can.
- Destroy the supply compound.
- The battle will now be yours, just finish off the remaining enemy units and
then finally Guan Yu.
For "Fake defection":
- At the start of the battle Pang De will "defect" to Shu.
- Send Yu Jin up and around the right side of the castle to the top by Cao Cao.
- Have Cao Ren fight Mei Sanniang and Sun Li at the bottom.
- Cao Cao will fight Guan Yu at the top.
- Have Xun Yu fight Guan Ping and Zhou Cang on the left side.
- Once Pang De returns to your army, change his objective to go down to attack
Pang Tong (he's at the bottom of the mountains on the lower left hand corner
of the castle.)
- Once Yu Jin reaches the top, attack Guan Yu from behind (make sure he doesn't
get stopped by Ma Chao.)
- Quickly defeat Pang Tong and then take out the supply compound.
- Just finish off Guan Yu.
For "Empty castle":
- Just sit and wait for the enemy to run into the mines.
- Engage in battle on all sides.
- I suggest dueling Ma Chao as Peng De for a special duel sequence.

- Send all of your units on their default objective, except have Xiahou Ba
go around the path on the left side of the map on the other side of the
mountains. Have Cao Cao go all the way to the right and guard the supply
compound. You'll see why in a minute.
- Just push forward, you'll come into contact with the enemy. If you choose
Cao Bu's political policy Zhang Liao will use the tiger cannon and deal
heavy damage to the units that push up on the left side. It will take a bit
hit to their morale, troop count, and will temporarily confuse their troops.
- Just fight the enemy head on. You shouldn't have much of a problem defeating
them because your units will sort of form a line by default, and you should
only be facing the enemy 1v1 with all your units (and you might even be able
to 2v1 some units.) Liu Bei and all them will push up as well, but they'll
usually get stuck behind their own units, so they shouldn't be teaming up
on you.
- If you used the tiger cannon the enemy units on the left side should fall
pretty quickly. Once they do just send your extra units over to help the
guys on the right.
- One of Liu Bei's units will be pushing the supply compound, thats why I had
you send Cao Cao there. Just fight them once they get to you. Cao Cao
shouldn't have any problems, not to mention if you keep him near the supply
compound he'll have that added advantage as well.
- Jiang Wei's unit will show up after a little while near the top left area of
the map. He usually heads over to your supply compound, just stop him on the
way there with someone.
- By this time Xiahou Ba should be at the bottom of the map. The enemy supply
compound is somewhere around that little forested area on the left (there
is an "L" shaped clearing near the bottom edge of the left mountains, its
around this area.) Just search around a bit and you should quickly find it.
Destroy it. It's usually to the right of it.
- Guo Shao will join with reinforcements later on in the battle. But by this
time the battle might already be just about won (especially if you've
destroyed the supply compound by now.) Just send him up into the fray to
start attacking someone.
- Once the supply compound is destroyed this battle is easily won. But then
again it's pretty easily won without even doing that.
For "Deploy bowmen in front":
- At the start of the battle send Cao Cao over to guard the supply compound on
the right. Send Xun Yu through the valley on the left side of the map, on
the other side of the mountains. Have her start pushing down towards the
forest area on the enemies side of the map.
- Push down with your units. If you have the tiger cannon Zhang Liao will use
it on the enemies on the left. It will greatly damage a few of them.
Usually Guan Yu will push up then to fight him. On the right side have
Himiko and Pang De fight Himiko. Your guys in the middle will meet up with
the main portion of Liu Bei's army, however each time I've played this what
seems to happen is they will each fight the first three units, and then the
rest of the army kind of just hangs out behind them. This works in your
favor, obviously.
- I usually send Li Dian up to attack Guan Yu as well to bring him down even
quicker.
- Just wear down the enemy with special abilities until Xun Yu reaches the
supply compound. Make sure Cao Cao is guarding the supply compound in case
the enemy comes to attack it.
- Once the supply compound is destroyed start cleaning up.
- Jiang Wei will probably appear shortly (if he hasn't already.) He will
make his way over to Cao Cao.
- Guo Shao will show up with reinforcements then (as if the outcome hasn't
already been decided?)
- Defeat all of the units for the experience points, then take out Liu Bei.
For "Deploy horsemen to left":
- I don't really like this plan because it starts you off in a rather weak
formation. For one there aren't any cavalry units on the left side that
can quickly go around the mountains on the left to attack the enemy supply
compound from behind (except for Cao Cao, but I suggest sending him to
guard the supply compound.) Secondly its much easier for your units to get
ganged up on once they engage the enemy.
- Send Cao Cao over the guard the supply compound.
- Have the rest of your units push up like normal.
- If you have the tiger cannon Zhang Liao will use it on units to the left,
doing heavy damage. I recommend that you send Li Dian and Sima Yi over to
the right side then if you do this, because they will need more help over
there. The units on the left should go down quickly since they're already
badly wounded.
- One thing that does seem to happen however is the battle seems to get split
into two: several units fighting on the left side and several on the right.
This usually opens up a gap in the middle. I suggest sending a unit straight
down this gap to find the enemy supply compound. It should be somewhere by
the little forested area on the bottom left side of the map, usually to
the right of where that "L" shaped clearing is.
- Once you find the supply compound destroy it. If for whatever reason you're
having a hard time getting a unit down there quickly this battle is going to
be a little bit tougher. Keep an eye on your units and make sure no one gets
double teamed. As long as you can quickly destroy the supply compound though
it shouldn't be any problem.
- For a time reference I found this battle is easiest won if the supply
compound is destroyed either a little before or right when Jiang Wei comes.

doesn't do a whole lot of damage to the enemy it will make breaking down one
of the gates much easier.

Zhang Liao: Propose duel
Xun Yu: Disguise as Liu Bei's troop
Sima Yi: Rumors of betrayal (recommended)
Sima Yi's plan is much, much better then the other two. The southern gate will
be unguarded in his plan, allowing you to walk into the castle down there.
And really, the toughest part about the next battle is just getting into the
castle. Once you make it inside it's a breeze, and his plan will give you an
advantage by getting you in there quicker. The other two plans are really
pretty useless to be quite honest with you.

- Send Xiahou Ba and Cao Ren up to take out the northern gate. I really
recommend that Xiahou Ba has the catapult attached to his unit, as it makes
breaking down this gate much quicker. Once the gate is down draw out Guan
Yu a little bit and attack him with both units.
- Let Sima Yi break down the eastern gate, then draw out Ma Chao and attack
him with Cao Cao, Sima Yi and Zhang Liao. (I suggest you send Himiko down
to the southern gate.)
- The southern gate will be open. Have Guo Shao enter the gate and place his
unit right on the little left path there that branches off, but keep him
facing the middle path. Send Pang De's unit in, and just have him hold his
position right when he gets inside the castle.
- Have Xun Yu, Yu Jin, and Himiko line up facing the western wall of the
castle. Zhu Rong is about to appear from the lower left hand corner of the
map and make her way to the southern gate. Fight her with all three units
to quickly bring her down.
- Shortly after this you will see a scene where Zhuge Liang tells Zhang Fei
and Zhang Ran that it was an enemy plot, and they will return to their gates.
Zhang Fei will go to the southern gate, and Zhang Ran to the eastern gate.
Let them return to their gates.
- As long as you positioned Guo Shao and Pang De correctly, they both will be
able to attack Zhang Fei once he walks into their trap.
- Just draw out Zhang Ren from the eastern gate and do the same thing with him
that you did to Ma Chao.
- Once Zhang Fei is dead send Guo Shao around the zig zaging path to the left.
Have Pang De push up to the middle where you will find Zhuge Liang. Engage
him in battle.
- Once Zhang Ren is defeated send either Zhang Liao or Sima Yi into the castle
to fight Zhuge Liang as well.
- When Zhu Rong is dead have Xun Yu go attack the western gate with Himiko
waiting outside. You can either send Yu Jin over to the gate and wait outside
as well, or have him go back up Pang De/Guo Shao's unit.
- Liu Zhang might move near Zhuge Liang and shoot arrows at Pang De. Attack
Liu Zhang with Guo Shao to stop him. (If you have Cai Wengi she will be in
Guo Shao's unit, making it MUCH easier to take down Liu Zhang.)
- When the western gate is destroyed lure out Zhao Yun and defeat him with
Xun Yu and Himiko.
- Once Yan Yan and Guan Yu are defeated send down Cao Ren to attack Liu Bei,
he's off in that little square area in the middle, to the left.
- When Zhuge Liang is defeated attack Liu Zhang from the other side with Pang
De or Zhang Liao (whichever unit has more special abilities available.)
- Liu Zhang will go down quickly. Send another unit up to attack Liu Bei from
behind. He will go down quickly then as well, and the battle is won.
For "Disguise as enemy troop":
- Send all of your units off to their default objective except for the
following: Do not bother attacking the north gate, Yan Yan is just going to
shoot arrows at you as you try to knock it down. Unless you're OK with
probably losing a unit (most likely Zhang Liao, or whoever you decide to
have attack the gate). Instead send them elsewhere to help out. Send two
of them down with Pang De to attack the southern gate. Send the other one
to the lower left corner of the map. Also send either Himiko or Guo Shao
there as well (if you send Himiko there have Guo Shao at the east gate.)
- Once Xun Yu gets over to the west gate they will disguise themselves as Shu
troops and the gate will open. She should run into Zhao Yun's unit. Attack
him a bit, retreat, then attack him outside with Xun Yu and Xiahou Ba.
- After a little while Zhu Rong will appear around the area where the south
western corner of the castle wall is. That's why I had you send two units
down here. Engage her with whoever you brought down.
- Just follow the same strategy for the gates: fight the enemy, retreat
outside, once they follow you out attack them with all of your waiting units.
- Get rid of all the enemy units blocking the gates, then make your way into
the castle. Zhuge Liang will be hanging out in the middle, attack him from
both the south and the east sides.
- Once he is dead push into the middle with your units. Surround Liu Bei
and Liu Zhang, they're hanging out around the middle.
For "Propose duel":
- Ok I really don't see the point to this plan at all. The whole plan is to
have Zhang Liao attack the northern gate and duel the enemy there for a quick
win, then storm the castle. But there's a bunch of problems with this. For
one the entire time he's trying to break down the gate Yan Yan's unit will
be attacking him with arrows. By the time the gate is broken through he'll
have literally about 1/4th of his morale left, just barely outside of red.
He'll also probably have about 3,000 some troops left. Then, all that happens
is you see a cut scene with him and Guan Yu dueling. He wins... but Guan
Yu's unit is still alive and well afterwards. It will raise Zhang Liao's
morale back up to about 3/4ths full, but it doesn't really matter because
about 80% of his army is dead... so it's pretty pointless if you ask me. You
could always just change their objective and not have him attack the north
gate, but you might as well just choose one of the other plans then...
- If you have catapults attached to Xiahou Ba's unit he'll do some damage to
Zhao Yun when he attacks the western gate. Nothing major though,
unfortunately.
- Make sure you have a unit waiting by the southwestern corner of the castle
to intercept Zhu Rong's unit once she appears before she can attack Zhang
Fei. It's best to have Xun Yu do this because Pang De usually won't reach it
in time before she can attack Zhang Fei. You can then 2v1 Zhu Rong with Xun
Yu and Pang De to quickly defeat her, then send Xun Yu up to help Xiahou Ba
and Pang De to help Sima Yi.
- When Cao Ren breaks through the eastern gate lure out Zhang Ren and attack
him with Cao Ren, Cao Cao and Himiko. Then do the same with Ma Chao.
- Try to keep Zhang Liao alive for as long as possible. Just lure out the
enemy units on the northern gate and gang up on them as well.
- Push into the castle once the units defending the gates are defeated. You
can attack Zhuge Liang in the middle from both the south and the east, and
attack Liu Bei from the north and Liu Zhang from the west. They shouldn't be
too hard to take out.

- Have all of your units go to their default positions, except send Cao Ren
over to the right instead of the left.
- Have Xiahou Ba fight Lu Meng, Cao Cao fight Zhou Yu, and Zhang Liao fight
Taishi Ci. Have Xun Yu surround Taishi Ci, and have Cao Ren surround Zhou Yu.
- Let the three enemy units on the left run into your mines. Then engage each
of them with your units. Use what special abilities you can, and they'll go
down quickly. (By the way, you can get Lu Su's unit to run over the mines
twice, just make sure Pang De is all the way over to the left by the island.)
- Once all of the other enemy units are gone, go out and defeat Sun Quan to
win. He'll be down to the right of the middle island. Pretty easy, huh?
For "Ambush behind trap":
- Send Pang De down to the right side with Cheng Yu and Cao Ren instead. Have
Cao Cao stop at the first mine, Sima Yi at the second, Xiahou Ba at the
third and Zhang Liao at the fourth. Have Xun Yu stay behind Cao Cao.
- Engage in battle with Lu Su, Lu Xun, and Gan Ning on the right. It's 3v3,
so you don't have to worry about your units getting surrounded.
- Sun Li should show up pretty early in the battle. She'll head to the area
to the right, but don't worry about her, there won't be enough room for her
to surround any of your three units down there.
- Have Cao Cao right Zhou Yu, Xun Yu fight Lu Meng, and Zhang Liao fight
Taishi Ci. Have Sima Yi surround Zhou Yu, and have Xiahou Ba surround
Taishi Ci. These two units also should've run right into the mines, so they
should go down very quickly.
- Use Xun Yu's magic to take down Lu Meng. Have Cao Cao surround him once
Zhou Yu is defeated.
- Advance to the south a little with Sima Yi, Zhang Liao, and Xiahou Ba to
spot Sun Quan. Fight him with Sima Yi so you can use his magic against him,
and have Zhang Liao and Xiahou Ba surround him. He'll go down very quickly.
For "Main force to west":
- Let your units go to their default positions, except have Pang De go to the
left with Cao Cao and Xun Yu. Have him sit below Xun Yu, in front of the
mine.
- Have your units go to the left and fight the three enemy units there (Lu Su,
Lu Xun, and Gan Ning.) They should have no problem taking them out. Try
to position your units so the others in the back can surround the enemy.
- Lu Meng, Zhou Yu and Taishi Ci should run into the mines up north. Have
Pang De fight Lu Meng, and have Cao Cao take her of Taishi Ci. If you kept
Xun Yu in her default area then Zhou Yu will head for her, running into
the second pair of mines. Smart guy, huh?
- The enemy units in the north should be taken out no problem, they'll be very
damaged.
- Once they've been defeated up top push down to the right and you'll find
Sun Quan. Take him out to win.

Xun Yu: Persuade enemy troops
Cheng Yu: Accept offerings of supplies (recommended)
Sima Yi: Form unit of guards
It's not really that useful to form the special unit of guards, so I recommend
Chang Yu's plan as you'll get a boost in morale and supplies. Xun Yu's plan
will just reduce Liu Bei's army by a measly 10%.

- At the start of the battle Cao Cao's units will head up to the mountains on
the left to deal with Himiko. Let him go there, and have your units push
forward.
- Let your units push forward and have them form a straight line. Send Sima Yi
and Guo Shao over to the left side. Wait for the enemy to push up and engage
them in battle. So long as you put your army into a line you should fight
each enemy 1v1. You should be able to even 2v1 Mei Sanniang on the left,
and I was able to send Zhang Liao over to the right to 2v1 Jiang Wei, who
was fighting Pang De.
- Use all of your special abilities as soon as possible to bring down the
enemy. Just remember, the sooner you use them the sooner they'll be
recharged and ready to use again.
- Once Cao Cao reaches his objective and Himiko joins the battle, send them
both around to the enemys spawn.
- As enemy units start to drop, use your extra units the surround other
enemies and bring them down quicker.
- Send Himiko into the forested area in the middle of the map by the enemies
spawn. Their supply compound is around there. Find it and destroy it. Most
of the Shu units should be defeated by now anyway, but this will at least
seal the deal and make the rest of the battle quicker.
- Start pushing down with your remaining units in the middle. They should
locate Zhuge Liang just chilling by himself in the middle of the map. Fight
him and take him down.
- Liu Bei and Ma Chao were near their supply compound when I played, however
they were on he opposite side of where Himiko was attacking from, so I was
still able to destroy it.
- Once everyone else is dead bring down your army to get rid of Ma Chao and
Liu Bei. Once Liu Bei is retreated you've won!

Play as Cao Cao: This is a pretty obvious one, just beat the game as Liu Bei
and you can play as Cao Cao.
Unlock different difficulty settings: After beating the game with Liu Bei and
Cao Cao, you'll be able to start a new
game with three difficulty settings:
Beginner, Normal, and Expert.
Unlock Battle of East Lau: You can play this battle by beating the game with
Liu Bei under expert difficulty. This battle will
be after the Wei-Shu conflict.
Unlock Battle of Chang Zheng: You can play this battle by beating the game
with Cao Cao under expert difficulty. This battle
will be after the Wei-Shu conflict.
Special duels: Sometimes when you duel with some characters you will see a
special duel between the two units. This will usually happen
if you two characters dueling have some sort of connection to
each other in the plot. For example Xiabou Ba's father Xiahou
Yuan is killed by Zhang Fei. If you duel Zhang Fei with Xiahou
Ba the duel scene will be different then if Xiahou Ba duels
just some other random officer.
