Please let me know if you find one, and I'll try to get it fixed.
Please, though, don’t email me pages and pages of locations for
items I already have plenty of locations for. Lots of items will be found
over and over and over again. Had I listed every location for every item
I found, this faq would be 100 pages long. I’ve tried to just offer a variety
of options between data draining, dungeon crawling (chest finding), and the
Myst Springs. Not to be rude or anything, but I just can't list them all.
I’d still love to know where those Leather Legs are. :)
Version 1.1 Update: Removed the tabs that scrambled in the first upload
and adjusted the spacing to make the guide easier to read. Moved the
tips and advice to the bottom.
Version 2.1 Update: Corrected mistakes and added a few new locations/recipes.
I found those Leather Legs! Hooray! Found Asura, too. Removed optional trades
from the lists. Working on more armor recipes for the Myst Springs, but it's
gonna take a while.
Version 2.2 Update: Added locations for weapons Thunderlord, Oni's Fork,

According to Toppercop, you have a one in five chance (20%) of getting the
item you're after, so just keep trying. Thanks again, TopperCop!
Version 2.5 Update: Received a long list of recipes from Peter W. Many thanks
to him for his hard work and for sharing with me. I will include a PW with
the info he gave me. Thanks again, Peter! I also heard from toomedieval, who
pointed out that I had the data drain entries wrong for Hands of Fire and
Hands of Earth and that I skipped the Fairy Spear completely. Thank you, too,

Now, on to the business at hand.
This faq's purpose isn't to tell you the best way to do the Item Completion
Contest. It’s just as its name says - a list of alternatives. You’ve been
data draining for a while and need to do a bit of dungeon crawling while
Data Drain cools down? Pick an item off the list and go looking while you
cool off. Trying to Data Drain a Holy Night for Tenkafuubu and got eleven
Water Beasts in a row instead? (ELEVEN!). Maybe you’d find Star Eater
more cooperative (he’s got Tenkafuubu, too). You’ve been dungeon crawling
and think you’ll try the Myst Springs for a while? I’ll give you the
"recipe" for that Flame Leg Mail you need. Seen Monsieur so many times that
you want to slap him? I’ll tell you where I found the Heavy Metal you need
to Data Drain for those Ronin Blades and maybe save you some of the
jillion trips into the monster Ryu book that I made.
For tips and advice, see Section II. I'd recommend scanning through it at least
once just in case there's something there that might prove helpful.

Abbreviations:
DD = Data Drain (always use rare DD 2128 or Drain Heart unless you
want Virus Cores)
R/R = Risky and/or Regular treasure
MS = Myst Spring
D = Delta
T = Theta
L = Lambda
S = Sigma
O = Omega
{DBD} = Data Bug Dungeon
* = I’ve only found this item once at this location.
If it says “Buy Delta (or Theta, etc.)” – buy it at the weapons
shop in that root town.
Outside = an enemy or item was found outside in the field. Otherwise, it’s
inside the dungeon.
NOTE: Always double-check the server designation; I often use the same
dungeons in different servers.
Another Note: Remember that except for specialty areas (Christmas Card) or
storyline dungeons, all Gott chests refill, so if the item you wanted wasn't
there, sprite ocarina to the top and go right back down for a new chest. The
item you're looking for will eventually appear. Thanks to rpgprincess and
Captain Panda at the board for this; apparently I hadn't made it clear.

Section II: Tips and Advice
I’ve done the Items Completion quest a couple of times now. The first time,
it took me so many visits (hundreds) to the Myst Springs that I got
really frustrated. I thought that surely there was an easier way. So, I
tried it again. Starting all the way back with .hack Infection, I kept
a running diary of what I found where. I have crawled through dozens and
dozens of dungeons in an effort to find stuff. This can be a bit tricky
because the treasure chests are all random. I didn’t realize how random
until I visited dungeons multiple times. The chest that had a Fire Bracer
in it last time has a The Fool in it now and vice-versa. The Jindachi I
found in a Risky treasure is in a regular chest this time and vice-versa.
You can best see this in the very first dungeon you ever visited.
Delta Bursting Passed Over Aqua Field has two chests in the first
room where Orca gave you a lesson on using Fortune Wires. I ran in and
out the front entrance of this dungeon ten times and I received
Brigadine, Leather Coat, Leather Armor, Leather Gloves, Nomad’s Hood,
Head Gear, and spell scrolls - all out of two chests. The same goes
for the Gott chests. If something is listed, it CAN be there. Knowing
this, I’ve tried to list locations for items only if I’ve found an item
there at least twice. If I’ve only found something once, I’ll tell you.
Also, I don’t list Gott chests unless it’s one of the necessary ones
(Baian, Awful Stun Rod, Madlance, Gungnir, Evil Eyes, Rugrat Nights) or
if I found something there that you don’t find that often. I try to
list shorter dungeons to save time, but if I found lots of equipment in
a dungeon and it’s five floors, well, sorry - that’s the one you’ll get.
When I can though, I’ll steer you towards shorter areas. Since you
MUST visit the Gott Chests for these six weapons, you might want to
go ahead and do it early on. You’ll pick up lots of other items while
you’re at it - Angel Chains, Angel Helms, Angel Caps, etc. The most
trips it’s ever taken me to get one of the Gott chest weapons was
twelve, but I’ve read on the board of people taking thirty-five tries
to get Gungnir, so you might as well make the most of it. Don’t let
the randomness discourage you; weapons tend to show up in the same
places over and over again. I did one dungeon three times in a row
to check this. My first time through, I received three Professionals,
two Insane Spears, and one Apocalypse Rod. The second time, I found
five Professionals, no spears, and two Apocalypse Rods. The third time,
I found two of each. So, the weapons ARE there, but it may take a
second trip to find one. This goes for monsters, too. Once in a while,
you won’t find a monster where it should be. Just run through again;
it’ll show up (unless it was a boss - they won’t be back).
There are several dungeons (you can find them in other faqs) where you
can find special trade items like Doll’s Amulet or the Christmas Card.
I myself haven’t found the trade items to be worth the trouble. Each
of these dungeons, however, has a different data bug that you’ll have
to have if you want to complete your monster Ryu Book, and some of them
have hard-to-find items via Data Drain. If you need just one thing out
of a data bug area, try the outside portals first. Sometimes the one
you need is outside. If it’s not the enemy you want, just run. As soon
as you’re out of battle mode, you can gate out. It might save a trip
or two into some nasty dungeons. Some data bugs aren’t worth the effort.
Your monster Ryu Book will list Gaia’s Axe as a data drain of a Comad Goo
data bug. In three games, I’ve collected cumulatively about thirty
Hell’s Heralds (yep, that’s the enemy that has Gaia’s Axe). I’ve never
once gotten a Gaia’s Axe. You might have better luck than I, but the
Myst Springs are just easier for this weapon. If you go after a Data
Bug item, be sure to go to the location listed. Several data bugs have
the same names but carry different items at different locations.
Update: If a data bug carries a weapon you need plus a rare weapon like
Hell's Herald or Yeah Piros! try regular data drain instead of 2128.
I got Gaia's Axes this time.
Speaking of data bug areas, when you do Macha’s Dungeon, take in as
little equipment as you can to save room for all the stuff you pick
up in there. This is a nasty, nasty place - not someplace you want
to go back to, so come out with as much stuff as you possibly can and
check it in immediately.
Update: I filled twenty-one slots in the item completion contest from
this one dungeon. Again, carry in as little as you can.
Myst Springs
You know by now that throwing a piece of equipment into a Myst Spring
can change it. Weapons are easy. With the exception of Shinto Dream
(thanks again to VeghEsther and Souten no Balmung for explaining this to
me), the weapons go directly in order as they appear on the list. So,
if you have a blank spot, manipulate the springs accordingly. The armor
isn’t so straight forward. It goes up according to class, but since the
Items List doesn’t give you the armor’s level, it can be hard to know
what to throw in. It took me two days of systematically trying armor
in the springs to get the handful of pieces I needed. So, if I have
the "recipe" for a piece of armor, I’ll give it to you.
Every server has Monsieurs and Grandpas. Low-average level dungeons
will have Monsieurs; high-level dungeons within that server will have
Grandpas. Weapons and armor react differently in different conditions,
so you’ll need to manipulate the dungeons to what you need. I prefer
forest dungeons for weapons for a few reasons. Firstly, they always do
what they’re supposed to (i.e., I understand how these work). In
daytime (bright or grayish), the weapon goes up two; at night or in
the afternoon (funky colors - lots of pink), the weapon goes up one.
Ending keywords Haunted Land or Valkyrie will get you a forest dungeon
most of the time. Second keywords Evil-eyed or Fossil’s will usually
make it nighttime. First keyword Great or Chosen will usually make it
high-level. So, if you need a high-level nighttime dungeon, try Great
Evil-eyed Valkyrie. If you need a high-level daytime, try Chosen (almost
any second word) Haunted Land. You see how it works. The second reason
I like forest dungeons is that I can find the Myst Spring very quickly
with a Fairy Orb. Third nice thing is there are rarely more than
half-a-dozen (usually less) magic portals in these dungeons, so I can
quickly clear the field. Since you’re doing this quest, I’m assuming
you’re a completist. This is a very fast way to finish off the field
portal section of one of your Ryu books. You can even find those pesky
Piney Apples if you haven’t finished your Grunties.
Armor is just the opposite. Easiest for me is Thunder dungeons. It’s
almost always raining. Just do Random searches for Thunder. In the rain,
armor goes up two. At night (no rain), it goes up one. If you need a
weapon to go down one, take it to a Thunder area. There are other things
that work. These just work best for me.
Wherever you go, make sure you’re in a strong enough server. Armor’s
not usually a problem, but you need plenty of leeway for weapons. If you
throw a weapon into a Myst Spring in the daytime and it goes up one instead
of the two it should have, you’ve reached the outside limit of that
server’s ability. When in doubt, stick with a stronger server.
In summary:
Daytime: Weapon +2/Armor -1
Night: Weapon +1/Armor +1
Rain Weapon -1/Armor +2
Keep in mind that Myst Springs regenerate. They won’t be back immediately,
but they will come back, so if you find an area that you particularly like
(no enemies between you and the spring), make a note of it and you can use
it again later. Or after several dungeons, just start at the bottom of your
Warp History and hit those springs again. If you’re searching for Myst
Springs in open fields, call your dungeon grunty and head off for the
dungeon. You’ll travel faster and spot a Myst Spring along the way at
least part of the time.
Always carry a few weapons with you. I’ve never found a Short Swing (#2
on the Axeman’s list). Knowing that, I carry a couple of Hatchets when
I go dungeon crawling. If I find an appropriate spring, I just pitch it in
and get that Short Swing while I’m on my way somewhere. It’ll save you a
few trips later.
Update: I cannot believe that I was halfway through this quest for the third
time before I learned about the Overall Map (thanks, John!). Well, for
goodness'sake! When you warp into a dungeon, you can set the map to Overall
with the Select button. This lets you see instantly if there is or is not a
Myst Spring available. With this handy little feature, I have switched to
Sea of Sand Dungeons for my +2 weapons - lovely. :)
A Few Tips
Having played .Hack enough to get to this side quest, you probably already
know all of this; just consider these a few friendly reminders.
ALWAYS carry equipment that lets Kite use the spells Suvi Lei (paralysis)
and Mumyn Lei (sleep). The vast majority of enemies in this game are
highly susceptible to one of these two spells. "Families" of enemies
will all be susceptible to the same spell. Lichs (Lich, Lord Lich, Ancient,
Dark Lord, etc.), Armor enemies, maidens, hsiens, wyverns can all be
paralyzed almost instantly. Death Implant-type, bony enemies like Pazuzu
and Ominous Skulls, Starfish, Rainbow Tails, Hand of God, Goblins, dogs,
and snaky things like Neptune Medusa all go right to sleep. Not only
does this make enemies easier to Data Drain (since you can actually
catch them), it will save you loads of time healing your party
when they can just attack without getting beaten to a pulp.
Kiki & Lala and Nil & Despair each have one of the spells; Stealth
Blades have both. Still, keep bunches of Antidotes and Restoratives
with you for those enemies that are resistant to your spells
(Death Glares and Hellboxes come to mind). Also, take out
the healers first. Enemies like Menhir, Skate Rat Ark,
Conqueror, and Napylon will not only heal themselves and other
monsters, they’ll even resurrect their friends, so get them out
of the way first.
ALWAYS carry tons of Fortune Wires and Fairy Orbs. Use a Fairy Orb on
every level of every dungeon to save loads of time in backtracking. If
you’re doing Gott chest dungeons, have a good supply of Sprite Ocarinas
so that you can warp out and go right back down if you didn’t get what
you were after the first time.
ALWAYS check in with the items man after EVERY TRADE and EVERY DUNGEON.
I know this seems like overkill, but it’s really not. Many items in this
game have similar names. Cygnus is a spell scroll; Cygnus Wand is a
weapon. Steelblade is a Blademaster weapon; Steel Blades is a Twin
Blade weapon. Slayer is a Heavy Blade; Slayers is a Twin Blade. Sun Fang
One, Sun Fang Five, and The Sun Fang are three separate weapons as are
Earth Rod, Earth Wand, and Earth Staff. You think you checked in the
Staff of Truth when, in fact, it was the Wand of Truth that you checked in.
You gave away your Hands of Fire when it was the Fire Hands that were
checked in. So, don’t go into a trading frenzy. Trade and check in so
that you don’t accidentally trade off something that you need for your
list. This is especially true for one-of-a-kind trade items. Thankfully,
most of these aren’t available until after the items completion contest
begins (Helba, Tsukasa, Subaru, Kazu, Orca, etc.). Just BE CAREFUL.
Check in after every trade. It would be awful if you gave away or
traded Excalibur (Kazu only) before it was checked in. Unless you stumble
across one in a Gott chest (and no one ever has that I know of), you’ll
never find another. If I find alternate locations for trade items, I’ll
mention them just in case you traded earlier in Disc Four and an item is
no longer available.
Update: Again, I want to stress, check it in AFTER EVERY TRADE! At the very
least, when you clean a person out (like Kazu), check those weapons in RIGHT
THEN. Don't wait and accidentally trade one away for something else.
TRADING TIPS:
Pay attention to who you’re trading with. A Heavy Blade will give you a
lot more trading credit for that Forest Sword than an Axeman will.
A Wavemaster’s not going to be that enthused about your high-powered
Demon Mail because he can’t wear it. Offer him a Shadow Robes instead.
When you start trading at the beginning of the items quest, don’t
clean everybody out. You only need one of each item. If NOVA and Task
both have a Nightingale, just trade for one (I took NOVA’s). Then later,
when you’re sick of Data Draining and dungeon crawling and need that
Nightingale for a Myst Spring, Task will still have one for you to pick
up. Just think of it as free storage.
There’s an element of randomness in the trading just as there is in the
treasure chests. The bulk of each person’s trading list is set in stone.
As long as you leave the item alone, it will be there forever until you
decide you want it. This is not true of the LAST TRADING SLOT. The last
item on each person’s list will CHANGE. Since I don’t know how to hack
into games, I can’t tell you what causes this, but I do know that it
happens. I’m not certain, but I think what people carry in that last
slot depends largely on what you’ve been trading for. My first time doing
this quest, I went around and cleaned everyone out. Later, lots of people
had War God hand armors, so I picked up several. When I went back to that
save and checked my trading Ryu book, 90% of the players were carrying
hand armor in that last slot. This time around, I’ve been a lot more
selective and have traded primarily for weapons. In the Ryu Book, again,
90% of the players are carrying weapons in that last slot. This last slot
is what you might call an optional trade. It’s not guaranteed, but
something could show up that you need (like my Aqua Spear, Forest Sword,
and Liquid Axe). This will not apply to your playable characters or
specialty traders (burning oil, etc.), but it will apply to everyone else
and the grunties. So, check your grunties and your "players you’ve met"
Ryu book from time to time. If an item shows up in that last slot that
you need, GET IT NOW, because it may be gone next time you look. When I
figured out how random that last slot was, I quit writing those trades down,
so if I’ve listed a trade in the faq that you can’t find, it was an
optional trade.
Update: Exploit the optional trades. I picked up LOTS of weapons this time
in that last trading slot. If the grunties/players have stuff you don't
want/need, trade for it and get it out of there. Soon, they'll have new
stuff in those slots. Just remember that that optional trading slot tends
to carry what you've been trading for. If you want weapons, don't go around
trading for a lot of armor just yet. This time around, I left stuff alone
that I knew would be there forever (everything except the last slot slot)
and spent my time picking off those last slot items.
Use your storage wisely. If you have a lot of rare or high-end weapons
that cannot be used in the Myst Springs, don’t keep them. They’re not doing
you a bit of good in storage. Picked up ten Hell’s Harald’s in Macha’s
Dungeon? Give them to your Axemen, trade, then sell the rest. Cash them in
and buy call spells in Lia Fail instead. The calls are magnificent for
trading and will take up a lot less storage. Use your storage for
various levels of equipment. Then when you need something for the Myst
Springs, you have several levels to choose from. It’s much better to have
that Blitz Spear you need for the Myst Spring than to have to build it up
from a Fairy Spear. Once you start in with the Myst Springs in earnest,
do one weapons class at a time. Finish the Twin Blades, for example, and you
can dump all of those weapons you’ve been saving and free up more storage.
Data Draining
By now, you know how this works, so I’ll just mention a couple of things.
If you’re trying to data drain an enemy, and it just won’t break, try
a different attack. I’ve beaten Dark Asteroids and Neptune Medusas (both
taking nice little naps) literally into the single digits without a
Protect Break. Use magic on them instead. If your physical/magical
attacks aren’t working, try the other. Second, make sure you have
some negative weapons for the lower levels that you want to Data Drain.
My favorites for this are the three Twin Blades. Even when they reached
Level 99, Moonstone and Natsume, equipped with Nil & Despair, hit for
precisely one point per hit even in a Level 1 Dungeon. This makes it very
easy to Data Drain those low HP enemies. If it’s going too slowly, tell
them to use magic or skills. This will be very weak, too, but a bit faster.
If you’ve gone to a mid-level dungeon and have a 600 HP enemy, give Kite
a regular weapon and let him knock the HP in half before they start pecking
away at it. Just mix it up, but these two are excellent for Data Draining
lots of enemies. Keep in mind that Kite will be stronger than the other
two (especially his magic), I suppose from all the +2 books he gets. You can
get Nil & Despair from WxdSto^k in Sigma Screaming Wind Sand’s Fate
Castle. You’ll pick up other negative weapons along the way. I personally
found this one the most useful.
You should never have money problems in this stage of the game. You pick
up so much stuff to sell that money’s easy, so if you can buy something,
buy it. Just a side note - you can use high-end Gott treasures like
Vessels of Sky or Golem Parts to build affection very quickly, even with
someone like Sora (who’s not easily impressed). Call spells sell for big
money, trade for most anything, and build affection with Wavemasters like
Helba in a jiffy.
As you go through the list, pay close attention to the server designation.
Omega Discovered Forbidden Sunny Demon is the location of one of the
must-have Gott items. Since it’s a lovely, oh-so-short dungeon, I tried
those same keywords at all the other servers and found five identical
dungeons. They’re identical in every way except for the enemies and items
you find. So, if a keyword phrase looks familiar, double-check the
server before you head off in case it’s a different dungeon.
I still haven’t found everything, and I know I never will, but I have found
all but about ninety pieces of equipment on the list - that’s ninety pieces
for the Myst Springs (which is just about right since you need about
sixty meetings each with Monsieur and Grandpa for one of the Ryu books).
There are alternatives for the rest. Well, I think that’s about it.
