A. Notes
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to your only Gran Turismo Concept: 2001 Tokyo guide on
the net. This is version 5 of this FAQ, and it's almost done. I
will still answer whatever question you have about this game while I
am waiting for the middle of 2004, when Gran Turismo 4 comes out.
To contact me, please send to <
[email protected]>. I hope
that you'll find this FAQ useful. So, enjoy!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
B. Game Information
----------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------
General Information
-------------------
Gran Turismo Concept: 2001 Tokyo is racing game, only for PS2
of course. It is the first Gran Turismo Concept of the three in the
series, and I'm not sure if it was released in USA or Europe or not.
As far as I know, there's only one Japanese version of this game.
Also, it is not the Japanese version of Gran Turismo Concept: 2002
Tokyo-Geneva.
This Japanese game was released in 1/1/2002 (the first day of
the year 2002) in Japan by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. The
developer is Polyphony Digital, who are responsible for all the
other Gran Turismo games, and a game called Omega Boost.
Mainly, only two players can play the game, but I think that
that can be increased by using an i-Link Cable. The game supports
steering controllers and you still can play the game using a Dual
Shock (1 or 2).

--------------------
Gran Turismo History
--------------------
Gran Turismo began on the PlayStation (One) when Sony Computer
Entertainment released the first part, Gran Turismo, which included
more than 100 cars. After its great success, they made it again by
making Gran Turismo 2, but now with two CD-ROMs! The first one was
the Arcade mode, while the second was the Gran Turismo mode
(Simulation mode). In fact, Gran Turismo 2 has the biggest number
of cars that ever appeared in a Gran Turismo game, which was over
600, but the graphics was really bad.
After about a year and a half, the third Gran Turismo was out
with a subtitle ("A-spec"). In my opinion, it is the best Gran
Turismo game so far, and it is one of my favourite games. It
contains over 100, but they have the best graphics. I heard that
the developers spent about one week creating each car!
The next hit was a group of three extra GT games, which are
Gran Turismo Concept: 2001 Tokyo, Gran Turismo Concept: 2002
Tokyo-Geneva, and Gran Turismo Concept: 2002 Tokyo-Seoul. Of
course, this guide was written for the first one of them; 2001
Tokyo. All of them were released in 2002.
Gran Turismo Concept: 2001 Tokyo has Japanese cars only, which
are based on the motor shows in Tokyo. Gran Turismo Concept: 2002
Tokyo-Geneva has international cars from Japan, Europe, North
America, South Korea, etc. Gran Turismo Concept: 2002 Tokyo-Seoul
only has Japanese and Korean cars.
The next BIG thing is Gran Turismo 4. The game will be
released in 2004. However, I've seen a demonstration somewhere, and
the game is really cool.
The GT Advance (for Game Boy Advance) is not from the series,
but a lot of people noticed that the games are similar to the GT
series. The first part is GT Advance Championship Racing. The
second one is GT Advance 2: Rally Racing. And the third one is GT
Advance 3: Pro Concept Racing. GT Advance 2: Rally Racing is a
rally game and Gran Turismo 2 has also the first rally races in the
GT series. The GT Advance 3: Pro Concept Racing has the word
"concept," while there is Gran Turismo _Concept_. But anyways, the
GT Advance series is recommended to all the GBA gamers.
The most important notice about GTC: 2001 Tokyo is that you can
update your GT3 save data if you already have it on your MEMORY CARD
(8MB) (for PlayStation 2) when you when a certain race and you'll
get 1,000,000,000 in it.

II. GTC MODES
______________________________________________________________________
Here are the explanations of every mode in the game. I will try
to cover as much as I can.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Course License
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you remember the S License from Gran Turismo 2 and 3 A-spec?
This mode is a similar to those, but the difference is that you
don't have to drive exactly on the road, a few outs won't effect
here! Also, if you have crushed, that won't effect, too. Just try to
get near the Gran Turismo GT-R V-spec II(R34) car, or if you want to
get the Gold prize, beat it. Once you choose the course you want to
control, you will be asked if you want the Gran Turismo GT-R V-spec
II(R34) to be there or not. Anyway, you must beat the course before
the time reach the following times (Gold, Silver, or Bronze) in
order to get the prize (a car or two). If you get Bronze or Silver,
you will get one car, but if you get Gold, you will take the same
car plus another better car as an extra prize! Here is a table that
shows the course that you will play using the car in the second
column, with the times of course.

Now another table shows you the prizes that you'll get when
you beat the course in Bronze, Silver, or Gold. Car 1 is the car
that you will win in either times, but Car 2 can be only won in the
Gold time (the extra prize).

If you break a record, you will be able to save it (your name,
car, record, and date & time). Well, I think I have covered much
about the Course License.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
B. Single Race
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Single Race is the same as in every other Gran Turismo game.
This is not like Course License, here you will compete other cars
(from 1 to 5 cars) instead of the time. Before you enter a Single
Race, you will be asked about the difficulty. Normal, Professional,
or Ace. Every difficulty (except for Ace) and a course will let
you unlock a NEW car. The only difference between these difficulties
is that Normal has 2 laps, Professional has 3 laps, and Ace 5 laps.
Dirt (or Rally) Cars can only be played in the Dirt Courses. Also,
Other Cars cannot be used in the Dirt Courses. Two more options are
available; Demonstration and Machine Setting. Demonstration lets you
see the CPU controls the cars just like a replay. When you choose a
car, the other cars should be as the following (I know I made a huge
effort on this since I don't know Katakana very well). BTW, the
number of cars depend on the type of race you do:

C. 2P Battle
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The known two-player, split-screen race is here to add more
fun. You compete another human by using another joystick or
steering controller. Nothing else to say here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
D. Free Run
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you wish to play, practice, or try a car or course, then
this mode is what you're seeking for. Nothing much to say, if you
have finished playing, quit the mode since the laps are unlimited.
There's a new feature, it's loading and saving ghosts! What's a
ghost? It's like a replay of the best lap you done, and its use is
to let you know if you will break a record by beating this ghost.
This requires a save data besides the normal save, so, you have to
have a MEMORY CARD (8MB) (for PlayStation2). Data Logger is
available, too. Data Logger is like the Analyser of GT3: A-spec
(except the name). Also, you can break a record and save it just
like Course License mode, here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
E. Game Status + pod Race
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Game Status appeared in every GT game. Here you can see and
study the cars you've unlocked. Also, you can see the percentage
completion. In addition to that, you can do a few extra things:
1. You can play pod Race.
2. You can update a GT3: A-spec save with the additional
1,000,000,000 credits!
3. You can watch two clips.
Whenever you save a GT3 A-spec JP save, you will get the money.
About the pod Race that is kinda strange, here is how to play it:
=======
I. Tips
=======
------
Tip #1
------
Be on the first place. Try not to use brakes too much. Try
to release the acceleration button instead.
------
Tip #2
------
When playing against a human, and when you aren't in the
first rank, you can easily be the first by doing the following:
Once the other car stops in the red part of road, clash with
it from behind. The other player won't be able to stop on the
red part and he or she has to press reverse and waste time. Take
this chance to win!
===============
II. How to Play
===============
Race normally, and near the end of the lap, you will notice
some red colour on the road. Once you are on it, some Japanese
text will appear, and therefore, you have to push the brakes
until the car stops. Now press the handbrake O button then
continue. However, when somebody does tip #2 on you, quickly
press reverse (the /\ button) IF there is a chance to win.
===============
III. How to Win
===============
If you do the rules, you'll win. Try tip #2 when playing
against a human. Also, be fast doing the rules. If someone does
tip #2 on you, act quickly.
========
IV. Loss
========
If you haven't applied the rules, you will end up in the 6th
place! As the game won't accept the whole lap for you. Also, if
you are too slow, you won't win of course. If other players do
tip #2 on you, this will cause your loss.
===============
V. pod Race Map
===============
I just want to add this map to this mini-guide. It's bad, but
its purpose is to tell you where you should stop. Here it is:

VI. Moods of pod
================
Lights are flashing, sounds can be heard, and tails are
swinging... What's going on with the cars of tommorow? Or is it
today? Who cares. Now, pod does lots of things which are strange.
Here's a list of the colours of lights that it brights while you
drive it:
1. When it is happy, a red light will bright in front and in back
of pod.
2. When it is sad, a blue light will bright in front and in back
of pod.
3. When it is angry, an orange light will bright in front and in
back of pod.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
F. i.LINK Battle
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I do not know much about i-Link Cable. All what I know is that
it is for something like network play!? If you want to know about
this, I suggest you check out Alexander Lee's "iLink setup FAQ" at
the PlayStation 2 Hardware page at GameFAQS.com.

A. Best Records
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Most of the following records were done by my younger bro.
Thanks to him, he inspired me to write all of this, and without him,
I wouldn't have written anything about this game. The only modes you
can save records in are Course License and Free Run.
Once you hit a better record, tell me <
[email protected]>, and
I'll post it here.

C. Secrets
----------------------------------------------------------------------
These are only the secrets that I know. If you do know more,
please contact me.
<> Seeing CPU Demonstrations
At the main menu, press cancel (/\ or []), and then
you'll see a race driven by CPU.
<> Unlocking Ace Mode
You can unlock Ace difficulty in two ways:
1. Complete 100% of the game.
2. Press R1 + L1 (just like GT3 A-spec) on the
difficulties screen.
<> Unlocking pod Race
To unlock this mode, first win all Course License,
and then enter Game Status screen and choose the
first gift from the right. For further information
about this mode, scroll up to the pod Race subsection.
<> Getting 1,000,000,000 in Gran Turismo 3: A-spec
Complete all the Normal races, then go to Game
Status, and choose the second gift from the right.
You will update your previous GT3: A-spec save file
with the extra money!
In GTC Geneva, you'll also get Bronze medals in
ALL licenses, and this may also work with this game.
<> Seeing the Extra Clips
There are two extra clips. One of them will be
unlocked with the previous secret automatically,
and to get the other one, complete all the
Professional races. Then, go to Game Status and the
third and fourth (from the right) are the things
you're searching for.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

too many cars that we don't know how to unlock. Well, I think
that they can't be unlocked at all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
E. ASM TCS
----------------------------------------------------------------------
When you choose your car, you'll be asked about if you want ASM
+ TCS, TCS, or nothing. If you're a beginner, choose ASM + TCS to
get the best handling, but the slowest speed. TCS is for normal
players. Nothing for the tough players, as you'll get the best
speed, but the worst handling. ASM stands for Active Stability
Management, and TCS stands for Traction Control System. That's all,
I think.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
F. GT3: A-spec Demonstration
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a demonstration for GT3 (it's a movie). You can see it
from the main menu, by choosing "GT3 Demo". Just push X or O and
watch it.

H. Frequently Asked Questions
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Q1: Will this game come out to Europe?
A1: There was an intention, but Sony has cancelled the project for
unknown reasons. However, if you have a Japanese PS2, you can
buy it from the Internet or a store that imports Japanese games
(I don't think there are many).
Q2: What about the US?
A2: As far as I know, this game is Japanese only.
Q3: So, what upcoming GT games are planned to be released?
A3: We all are waiting for the release of Gran Turismo 4. I heard
that the Japanese version is out there, but you'll have to wait
until the middle of 2004 for PAL or NTSC versions. There's also
a second Japanese version BTW.
Q4: I need some help on the pod Race.
A4: Here's a quick guide:
When you are near the start/finish line, stop on the red mark on
the road by using the brakes. Once the car is stopped, press the
hand-brake button. Now continue driving, and do this every lap.
Q5: I have better records than yours.
A5: What are you waiting for? Send them to me, now.
Q6: May I post your FAQ in my Web site?
A6: I won't say "no" whenever a Webmaster requests me for posting.
Q7: From: Omar Anjum <
[email protected]>
Could you tell me which is the best car of the game (in terms
of speed and handling)?
A7: Well, I'm not sure, but the following cars are all fast and have
good handling: Arta NSX, au Cerumo Supra, Calsonic Skyline,
Castrol Tom's Supra (both cars), Esso Ultraflo Supra, Loctite
Mugen NSX, Mobil 1 NSX, Pennzoil Nismo GT-R, Pennzoil Zexel
GT-R, Raybrig NSX, and Xanavi Hiroto GT-R.
If you want me to choose one of them, I'll pick Castrol Tom's
Supra, as it is fast, and its handling is really good. Even its
appearance is very cool.
