All of the HP numbers in here were taken with the cars' mileage at zero, and
without any oil changes. If you have a car with more or less HP than what's
on this list, it's because it has been raced several times, or else had its
oil changed. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL ME TELLING ME MY
NUMBERS ARE WRONG BECUASE YOU'RE COMPARING THE LIST TO A CAR WITH MILEAGE ON

The purpose of this document is to provide a complete and easy-to-use
reference to the 181 cars in the North American version of Gran Turismo 3.
It is smaller than other similar guides because the information is presented
in a very compressed format with only one to three lines to each entry.
Also, I've provided only what I think is the most useful data--drivetrain,
horsepower, aspiration, weight, and power-to-weight ratio--and not included
mostly useless statistics such as height, wheelbase, etc.

Nothing except a single-width font (such as Courier New) will suffice for
displaying this list in editors like WordPad. The latest version of this
list can always be found at www.gamefaqs.com, the best source for video game
FAQs and guides on the Web.

| I. Version History |

Version 1.2--2 February 2003. Upon cleaning out my cluttered Inbox, I
happened upon a whole ton of info from loyal readers. A bunch of prize
car confirmations added and a clarification made. Thanks to everyone
who e-mailed me, even if I couldn't reply.
Version 1.1--9 March 2002. Added a new Frequently Asked Question and two Top
Ten lists.
Version 1.0--30 September 2001. SonGouki, author of a behemoth GT3 guide
also at www.gamefaqs.com, contributed a lot of the prize car data I was
missing. There still are several that neither of us have verified, but
it's better than nothing. [R]'s are back, denoting which cars can
participate in PL Formula GT. Anything I could add to the list at this
point would likely be fluff, so I probably won't be doing much, if any,
more updating.
Version 0.9--10 September 2001. All the races except the S License and
Endurance events are done. Car list looks complete except for the
Formula One cars.
Version 0.8--1 September 2001. The series races in Professional League are
going to take a while, so I'm putting up what I have now. I'm rapidly
approaching the point of burnout, so please forgive me if I take some
time off GT3 and this list to play Code Veronica X and/or Stretch Panic.
Version 0.7--23 August 2001. Rally races complete, and a FAQ section added.
IB races next.
Version 0.6--19 August 2001. Chugging right along. Too much new stuff to
list. Next stop is the rally races. I'll probably add a Frequently

| II. Breaking In and Oil Changes |

Clearly Polyphony Digital is out to make my job as car list compiler as
difficult as possible. First off, cars' horsepower change over time--as the
engine breaks in, the HP will increase about 3% from what I have listed here
over the first 200 miles you put on the car, and then go back down as more
mileage is put on the car.

To further complicate things, prize cars won from races come to you *already*
broken in, the 3% HP increase already in effect. They will still eventually
lose their HP as their mileage goes up.

As if this weren't bad enough, it wasn't until I had cataloged ALL the store-
bought cars that I realized they come with used oil in them. A 5% increase
in HP can be achieved by simply taking your car for an oil change as soon as
you get it home from the dealer. This goes for prize cars too.

Time and sanity are forcing me to just keep the stats I've already got.
Everything--store-bought cars and prize cars--will be listed as they look at
0.0 miles on the odometer, without any oil changes. This is the most
consistent approach I can feasibly use, and I hope the list is still useful
despite the small inconsistencies.

| III. Introduction/Notation |

Here I'll explain the notations used in the list. Stock power and weight
figures, which were gone for my GT2 list, return for this one, as there are
no longer maximum HP restrictions for races and only unmodified cars are
allowed in the Polyphony Digital Cup and Trial Moutain Endurance races.

Name: The first column contains the car's name, prefixed with a "*" if it is
a prize-only car (can only be obtained by winning a particular event) and/or
[R] if it can participate in Formula GT. Car names are the ones used by the
garage listing in the US version, and are listed in the same order they
appear in the Car Dealer's inventory, for the most part.

Those two mostly identical Miatas are annoying; I've labeled one "80's" since
only it can compete in the 80's Sports Car Cup events.

DrvTrn: This column notes the car's drivetrain.

Stock HP: The peak HP of the car immediately after purchase (or award in the
case of prize-only cars), with no HP modifications or oil changes.

Stock A: The aspiration (normal, turbo, or supercharged) of the car's
unmodified engine. Supercharged engines are eligible for the Race of NA
Sports, but not Race of Turbo Sports.

Stock Wt.: The car's weight with no weight reduction, in kilograms.

Stock P/W: The power-to-weight (actually, weight-to-power) ratio of the car
with no modifications. The lower this number, the better.

Tuned HP: The peak HP of the car immediately after purchase, with all
highest-spec HP increasing parts installed but no oil changes.

Tuned A: The aspiration used to achieve the HP listed in the Tuned HP column.
A lot of normally-aspirated cars can have turbochargers added to them; this
does actually change the car's eligibility from the NA Race to the Turbo
Race, even though the data screen doesn't change.

Tuned Wt.: The car's weight in kilograms after all three stages of weight
reduction.

Tuned P/W: The power-to-weight ratio of the car with full HP increase and
weight reduction.

Miscellaneous useful information about a car will occur indented on the line
below its entry, mainly what races award prize cars. The various leagues are
abbreviated as "BL", "AL", "PL", "RE" (rally events) and "ER" (endurance
races).

I haven't actually been asked most of these questions, but I can only imagine
that they're on the minds of a lot of people just starting out with GT3.
Hopefully this will help a few people out.

What car should I buy with my starting cash?
--------------------------------------------
The ideal answer is "None of the above". The only cars you can afford with
your starting 18,000 credits are just awful, so if you have the patience,
work on a license test until you get all golds in it. Even the Mazda Miata
LS you get from the B license is a cut above, and you could then spend your
18,000 on modifications to make it even better, or save it for later.

An even better option is to complete the Regulation Time Trials, accessed
through the Arcade Mode menu. You'll have to beat the game designers' times
in ten different car/track combinations, even the record set by Kaz Yamauchi
himself at the harrowing, five-minute Complex String course. It takes a
Herculean amount of patience, but you'll be rewarded with the Panoz Esperante
race car, which you can then sell for 500K beans right off the bat. It may
be a lot of work, but keep in mind that you'll have to do them at some point
anyway if you want to get 100% game completion.

If neither of these options is a possibility, here's a rundown of the stats
of the cars you can afford for under 18,000.

What's a good first "real" car to buy?
--------------------------------------
Everybody has their favorites, but in my humble opinion, the Mitsubishi
Lancer VI and VII RS are a hell of a lot of car for the money. 4-wheel
drive, fantastic power-to-weight ratio, good expandability, and adjustable
rear downforce--all for under 26,000 credits! A Lancer Evo RS will get you
through all the 4WD Challenges and any other race it's eligible for. In
Beginner League and Amateur League, I put more mileage on my Lancer than
anything else.

Is the Lamborghini/Nomad Diablo GT in the game?

Not in the US version.

Is there any way to get the prize car I want from a race?
---------------------------------------------------------
For the first time in GT history... YES!!! There's a bit of an exploit that
will let you get whatever prize car you want from a Series Race. It doesn't
work on Endurance Races, and Single Races only have one car to win anyway.
Here are step-by-step instructions:

1. Win all the races of a series except the last one. Actually, you don't
have to win them all, you just have to have a lead of at least eleven points
going into the last race.

2. Save the game from the series menu before the last race.

3. Start the last race, then immediately pause the game and choose "Exit".
This will forfeit the last race, but since you have an eleven-point lead over
the second-place scorer, you will still win the series.

4. Get your prize car; if it's not the one you wanted, exit to the main menu
and load your saved game.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 as many times as necessary.

Keep in mind you'll have to race the final race as a single race to get all
the medals and completion percentage for the series.

Long events like Polyphony Digital Cup and Formula GT are killing my HP!

Since you can't get an oil change in the middle of a race series, the ten
twenty-plus-lap races at the end of Professional League can leave your cars'
HP permanently devastated by the end. Fortunately, another exploit will
allow you to win a ten-race series while participating in as few of five of
the races.

The crux is this: If you pause and exit from an event in a Series Race, AI
cars receive the number of points for the place they're in at the point you
exit. Therefore, the top AI car will only get six points instead of ten if
you quit while in first place. Not only is this great when you don't want to
put up with the boredom of a 20-lap Test Course shootout or the annoyance of
Special Stage Route 11, it can also cause the AI cars' points to get spread
around more.

Using this trick, you're practically guaranteed to win in six races, and if
the AI cars spread their points out a lot, you can win in just five. Again,
you'll need to win any races you skipped as Single Races to get all the
trophies for the event, but this will at least cut down the wear and tear on
your cars in the high-level game.

| VII. GT3's Best Cars |

Top 10 Normal Cars
------------------
Polyphony Digital Cup and the Trial Mountain Endurance don't allow any
modifications on participants' cars. All parts, except tires, must be
"Normal" for entry into the races. Despite such a restriction, it's still
possible to unbalance these events as badly as any others with the correct
vehicle choice. Here's the top ten eligible, by power-to-weight ratio.

10. Pagani Zonda C12 (MR; 376HP, 1250kg, 3.324 P/W)
Everyone was happy to see at least one Italian supercar make its way to
the GT series, and the Zonda doesn't disappoint. It puts its 400 HP to
the pavement with ease and looks good doing it.

9. TVR Griffith 500 (FR; 330HP, 1060kg, 3.212 P/W)
Being a roadster, the Griffith has poor rigidity and is pretty much
obviated by the Tuscan. Pass unless you're looking for the challenge of
taming its awful torque-spin exiting corners.

8. TVR Tuscan Speed 6 (FR; 350HP, 1100kg, 3.142 P/W)
The Tuscan is one of my favorite cars in GT3, period. Excellent balance
of power and agility, great looks, and very affordable--aside from the
Griffith, it's the only one here under 100,000 credits.

7. Dodge Viper GTSR Concept (FR; 498HP, 1475kg, 2.961 P/W)
The Viper comes thundering back, in its new 500/500/500 configuration.
Surprisingly stable for such a high-powered FR.

6. Ruf CTR2 (4WD; 499HP, 1380kg, 2.765 P/W)
With the Mine's cars ineligible because of their tuner parts, this is
only 4WD machine to make the top ten. The 40/60 front/rear torque split
makes it very hard to turn, so put on the softest tires you can stand.

5. Jaguar XJ220 Road Car (MR; 501HP, 1375kg, 2.744 P/W)
A little heavy, but nothing says "suck my wake" like a 500+ HP
twin-turbo V6. It even handles pretty smoothly considering its size.

4. Pagani Zonda C12S (MR; 527HP, 1250kg, 2.371 P/W)
In my humble opinion, it's overkill--the standard C12 has its suspension
and power in perfect balance, while the larger engine of the C12S seems
like it wants to jump out of the body at times.

3. Shelby Cobra (FR; 470HP, 1068kg, 2.272 P/W)
A total disappointment. Even the mighty 427 can't save a roadster body
and decades-old suspension and transmission technology.

2. Toyota GT-One Road Car TS020 (MR; 600HP, 900kg, 1.500 P/W)
This one's pretty unfair, considering that it's barely removed from the
race-going version. Because of better downforce and lower weight, the
GT-One arguably performs better overall than the more powerful Speed 12.

1. TVR Speed 12 (FR; 798HP, 1020kg, 1.278 P/W)
Wrong... just wrong. It's practically undriveable without traction
control, but, you know... 800 horsepower, and stuff.

Top 10 Race Cars

Pretty self-explanatory. I'm leaving out the Formula One cars so as to have
some variety, and the Escudo because I want to. Stats on the list are
without modification, but you'll find that these same cars float to the top
when fully enhanced, too.

10. Gillet Vertigo Race Car (FR; 406HP, 803kg, 1.977 P/W)
The "skill car" of GT3. It's quite underpowered, so it's vital to use
the light weight to your advantage to maintain high cornering speed.
Slow tire wear is a nice bonus, too.

9. Chevrolet Corvette C5R (FR; 592HP, 1139kg, 1.923 P/W)
If you complete Arcade Mode before going into Simulation Mode, you'll
pick this one up free for achieving 50%, just as it becomes handy to
have it. It'll serve well for quite a while.

8. Tommy kaira ZZII (4WD; 543HP, 1000kg, 1.841 P/W)
Don't let the lack of stickers or a rear wing fool you--this is a full-
blown race car. Good-not-great power is made up for by four-wheel drive
--the ZZII can put all its power down, even without traction control.

7. Mazda RX-7 LM Race Car (FR; 572HP, 1050kg, 1.835 P/W)
Should come as little surprise to the seasoned GT fan. The RX-7 LM has
always been a mainstay in the high-end race cars. Its power develops at
the highest RPMs, making it capable of very high top speed.

6. Honda S2000 LM Race Car (FR; 586HP, 1050kg, 1.791 P/W)
Another solid FR race car, but it doesn't seem to have the intangibles
of the RX-7.

5. Pagani Zonda Race Car (MR; 651HP, 1150kg, 1.766 P/W)
The race version of the Zonda has the high power of the top-tier
prototypes, but not the light weight. Be careful not to let that extra
inertia push you over the brink.

4. Mitsubishi FTO LM Race Car (4WD; 567HP, 980kg, 1.728 P/W)
I swear, we'll all be playing GT13 in ten years and this car will still
kick ass. Not enough power to compete with the prototypes, but the
light weight and 4WD setup mean a steady ride with no spinouts.

3. Nissan R390 GT1 LM Race Car (MR; 641HP, 900kg, 1.404 P/W)
The first leg of the trifecta of Le Mans prototypes that, F1's
notwithstanding, rule GT3. Big engine packed into a small frame with a
great suspension.

2. Toyota GT-One Race Car TS020 (MR; 651HP, 900kg, 1.382 P/W)
It's pretty much a toss-up between this and the R390. You can't go
wrong picking either for PL GT World or GT All-Stars.

1. Mazda 787B (MR; 690HP, 830kg, 1.202 P/W)
A Group C race car from the late 80's and early 90's, the 787B was the
winner of the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans. Its quad-rotary engine flings
it effortlessly about any course.
