[1] Introduction
==============================================================================

MY PURPOSE:

I made this guide primarily to help MYSELF:  I am preparing to play through
Gladius for my second time, and I wanted to organize myself so that I could
just "run through" the regional goals and get to the point where I can roam
the world freely to find equipment, gladiators, and fun battles.  I have just
reached that point in my current game, and I'm enjoying it thoroughly, and so
I want to get here as quickly as possible next time I play :)

I have decided to be generous and make this available on GameFAQs.com for
others to use (AS REFERENCE ONLY), and not to copy or publish anywhere else.
It is absolutely NOT permitted to be used commercially.  This guide may ONLY
appear at GameFAQs, because then I only have to inform one site when I make
changes.

CREDITS:

I want to say straight out that I am getting my information almost entirely
from the Strategy Guide from Prima Games.  It is an excellent guide, and I
strongly recommend it to any fan of this game, even though most of the
information in it can be found in text files online.  Nothing compares to
having an actual book in front of you, with beautiful pictures and maps, great
organization and playing tips, and all the side quests.  (No, I am not
associated with Prima in any way, except that I bought their guide and haven't
regretted it for a second! :P)  Unfortunately, the Guide does have some errors
and omissions, and I've had to check within the game itself when the
information has been particularly misleading.  However, I have not verified
everything yet, but I will when I finally do play through the game again with
this guide at my side.

Also I give a lot of credit to Kerry Wano, for being the only person to give
contributions to this guide.  I have made note of the specific contributions
in the Version History section.

WHAT MY GUIDE WILL DO FOR YOU:

My guide is intended to streamline the information provided in Prima's
Strategy Guide, providing only the bare essentials needed to "run through" the
first four regions without missing anything crucial.  This lets your school
grow to its maximum size as early as possible, and opens up the land so that
you may travel around at your own whim.  Woohoo!! :)

My approach involves doing as few battles as necessary to accomplish the
goals.  As such, this guide isn't really for beginners, because the battles
that are worth more "ticks" in a league are often the more difficult ones.  Of
course, this is meant only a guide, and you may substitute other battles if
you are struggling (or if you see a prize from another battle that looks more
tempting).  Also note that when I suggest to "aim for" a certain popularity,
it may be worthwhile to equip crowd-pleasing or crowd's grace items -- after
all, you only want to do each battle once!

There are several advantages to this approach, besides the obvious one
of "getting to the good stuff" quickly.  Since you are minimizing the number
of battles fought, your gladiators will be as low a level as possible.  This
means that the enemies you fight will be lower level, and so difficult battles
(such as Insect Ze) will be slightly easier because your foes will have less
skills to drive you mad with.  It also means you'll be finding recruits at
lower levels, so you can have more control over the skills that they have.
And lastly, saving so many battles for later will mean that ALL TWENTY of your
gladiators will benefit from the experience gained in them.

If you do follow this guide to the letter, please let me know how it goes :)
In fact, once I'm sure this guide is "perfect", I wouldn't mind collecting
records surrounding the completion of the "bare bones" of the game.  Feel free
to drop me a line and let me know what Day it is, and how many hours you spent
playing, at the moment when all regions become available to you.

CONTACTING ME:

Sites other than GameFAQs that wish to host this guide may contact me at their
own risk -- and be prepared to offer me something in return. :P  Any errors,
omissions, or suggestions may be emailed to [email protected], but please
note that it will go directly to my Junkmail bin and I might not see it before
it gets deleted.  I do check fairly frequently though, so please put 'Gladius'
in the subject line to ensure that I don't miss it.  I must emphasize that I
do NOT want to answer questions via email, PLEASE post them on the Gladius
message boards at GameFAQs.com instead.

[2] Version History (and Future)
==============================================================================

v1.0 ... August 16, 2004

- List of goals in each region, and how to achieve them most directly
- Important Side Quests that need to be done before leaving each region

v1.5 ... October 24, 2004

- Briefly noted that using Crowd-pleasing or Crowd's Grace items may be
   necessary in reaching popularity goals
- Serious omissions fixed:  thanks to Kerry Wano ([email protected])
   - Certain battles need to be completed before others open up (big oops!)
   - Some missing popularity requirements
   - Some battles award different number of ticks than what was listed here
   - A few other errors that I can blame on the Strategy Guide [grin]
- Added Kerry Wano's "Suggested Order to Complete this Walkthrough"
- Reorganized a little bit.

~*~ In the Future ~*~

- List of ALL badges and talismans, where to get them, and what they do (this
idea is mostly for my own curiosity .. e.g. I haven't yet found a reason for
the Leviathan badge from Qaa Rah
- An ASCII map of each region as a guide .. wouldn't that be nice? :)

==============================================================================
[3] The RunThrough
==============================================================================

Since I first played through as Ursula, I am placing Nordagh first in my
guide.  Differences between Ursula's and Valens' quests are noted.

Symbols used:
||| represent "ticks".   Leagues are conquered when enough ticks are earned.
\_/ represents a "cup".  To qualify for a tournament you need enough cups.
(#) represents a badge necessary for the Championship
(@) represents a badge that this RunThrough requires or expects
(o) represents a badge that is not strictly necessary

coming in seven days.  This is the league that will get you a Minotaur!  The
other character who may ask to join is a Satyr, but not only are other Satyrs
available elsewhere, the Minotaur is more useful and more cool, so your goal
here is to get HIM.  The best way to ensure it is as follows:
 (1) Make sure you have NO empty slots in your school.  (If you do have an
empty slot, someone will ask to join your school immediately after the
battle.  If it is not the Minotaur, reloading will require you to do the
 fight again.)

 (4) If it's not the Minotaur who approaches you, reload and repeat (3).

==============================================================================
[4] After the RunThrough
==============================================================================

You now have complete freedom to roam the world at your own whim,
congratulations!!!  If you have followed this guide exactly, you have
completed 125 arena battles (counting a series as a single battle), and have
265 left to enjoy in any order (plus Caltha).  You can go right on ahead and
fight in Caltha now, if you want, but that's no fun! :)  PLEASE NOTE that if
you start fighting in Caltha's championship, you CAN NOT GO BACK and do the
remaining battles.

Please feel free to email me with the Day, and the number of hours you spent
playing up to this point, so that I can include your records in later versions
of this guide.  I'll post my own time too, of course, but I really don't
expect to get around to that for quite some time.

Here's the list of People who Followed my RunThrough, and by which day they
reached the Freedom to Roam and Recruit.

Kerry Wano                     Day 61

-=-=-=-=-!! :) BONUS STUFF :) !!-=-=-=-=-=-

I wouldn't be a very nice guide-writer if I failed to mention the remaining
Side Quests, now, would I?  So now, for your gaming pleasure, I present those
to you.

IN NORDAGH
- In Roanor, you will finally be able to master the "One Against Many" League
by killing the Greater Bear at the end.  Then visit the shopkeeper, who will
give you grief about how hard it is to find a good bear .. and agree to find a
new one for her.  Go south of Sloan Forest to find it, and be sure not to use
any uberpowerful skills when the bear is nearing dead, because you want to
just weaken it to 1/4 of its health.

IN IMPERIA
- In Pirgos, be sure to check in on Cresus and his father...
- In Belfort, talk to the shopkeeper and she'll speak of a burglary.  The
burglars can be found in the woods just east of there.
- In Cro Beska, the shopkeeper will tell you of another Historian's League,
this time in Syrna, "seven days from now".  Again, you'll have a chance at a
Minotaur (or Satyr, or Cyclops, both of which are recruitable elsewhere).

IN WINDWARD STEPPES
- Yuset's shopkeeper tells you that Eiji's friend Qorin is looking for her,
and can be found in The Wastes.  Go there, and fight in a league called
Wandering Souls, and Qorin will ask to join.  (She's just a regular Amazon,
nothing special.)
- Once you've completed Yuset's Beast Za league, Yuset's shopkeeper will tell
you about a new fight within Beast Za, "one day from now".  Visit him again
afterwards for a cut of his gambling winnings.

IN SOUTHERN EXPANSE
- Since you've Saved Sigi when you were in Nordagh the first time, and you've
read the Mysterious Tablet, and you've killed Sarenenutet, you are eligible
for the Hell's Gate Quest.  You just need to have at least six gladiators at
level 18, and then go to the southern tip of the Southern Expanse to locate a
hidden portal.  Through this portal is a terrible fight, in which you'll have
the Hell's Fury skill demonstrated to you ... Any characters that survive this
battle will learn the skill, but be warned that using it will make the game
uncomfortably easy :P  Probably more interesting are the pieces of unique
equipment earned in the battle:  In Cognito, The Marksman, The Laughmaster,
and No. 1 Fan.

Submitted by: Kerry Wano

I was thinking of writing up something like this, but never got around to it.
Kerry emailed me this list as part of a summary on the notes made while
playing through my RunThrough, and I decided it would be useful and so I
added it to this document with only minor formatting changes (and I used
the proper name of the Undead quest).

[6] Wrap-Up
==============================================================================
As wordy as I may have seemed above, I really don't have much to say now.  I
love this game, I love being able to contribute something back to the GameFAQs
society after using their resources for so many things, and .. yup, that's it.

Oh one more important thing:  I have someone to thank for contributing to this
walkthrough!!  Very many thanks, Kerry Wano ([email protected]), for using my
guide and pointing out where I had erred.  Now, I am confident that others
will be able to use it and love it in exactly the way I had first envisioned!
(Details of his contributions are listed in the Version History.)  So yes,
thank you Kerry, and thanks also to anyone else who is reading and (hopefully)
enjoying this guide.
