FRONT MISSION 4 - BARE BONES GUIDE
A need-to-know-only guide to FM4
by Lord Plothos
Introduction:
The purpose of this faq to is help the FM4 player
with two big difficulties. No matter how good you are
at strategy, you cannot counter these without help (or
some extra work). This is because both problems involve
ignorance of what is to come. How many times have you
gone into a mission, looked at the opposition, and
wished you'd switched your armor to impact? Ever
thought it was annoying having to talk to everybody
several times to make sure you got everything? Ever
looked at the simulator list and wondered how much they
were worth... oh, and which map was that one again?
So, you've guessed it: this faq gives you all the
info you need on who to talk to in the order you need
it, and tells you all the information about the battles
you'll fight that isn't available to you when you need
it (i.e., beforehand). That includes suggestions for
armor settings, a brief rundown of the enemy, plus any
special conditions you might want to meet during the
fighting (e.g., beating mission 4 in 15 to open UCS
sim 8). The faq is therefore ideal for those who neither
need nor want any advice on strategy (at least until
they hit a snag), and who likewise do not want piles of
extraneous information that just makes it harder to
locate the info you need. Unlike other FAQs with huge
expositions, levels here are often covered in just a
couple of lines. You'll also learn when new shop sets
are available, so you don't have to keep checking. (See
my Wanzer Shop FAQ for a convenient listing of the
equipment in these shops, sorted in a way that will help
you decide what you want to buy.)
Details:
The events of the game are listed below in order.
Simulator missions are listed before any story missions
that might have become an option at the same time. If two
armor types are listed, the first represents my personal
opinion of what is best, but the second will also work
well. If "any" is listed, this indicates all three choices
would work just fine, though you'll get no real advantage
from having the right armor. Armor reduces damage of the
relevant type by 30%, so having the right armor can make
some levels siginifcantly easier.
New shop and computer store sets are listed as soon
as they become available (see my Wanzer Shop List FAQ).
The enemy is listed according to type, with main
characters indicated by parentheticals. Also, since you
automatically do each story mission once and only once,
in a set order, information on rewards is unhelpful, and
so is not given. Monetary and other first-time rewards
are listed for simulator missions, so you can decide which
ones to pick from the list whenever you wanna "git yer sim
on." The amount you get depends on several variables, so I
just put the amount I got on my first run-through. What
you get shouldn't differ by too much.
Important dialog events are followed by parentheticals,
indicating the item this discussion will help you to
get. It does NOT always mean you will get the item just by
having the discussion; often this is just one of many
discussions you must have. I put two *'s around the item
to indicate where, if you have all the required conver-
sations, you will receive it.
Now and then, there is also a * in the enemy list (e.g.,
when Wagner is listed as an MG* in the run-down for
mission 07, the Blauer Nebel Base mission). This is to
indicate that, while that unit is of the indicated type,
it is head and shoulders above the other units of that type
for that stage of the game. (Wagner is an MG unit, but not
your everyday MG unit.)
About the sims: While just over half of the simulator
missions in this game open automatically as you progress, the
higher-level simulators (9-14 for Durandal and 8-14 for the
UCS 332nd) must be unlocked by meeting certain criteria.
These criteria are listed here with the other information
for the level in which they can be met (for example, beating
mission 04 in 15 turns or less will open sim U8, so the
run-down for mission 04 includes this information). Often,
there are two ways to open one of these higher-level sims,
in which case there will be two missions/sims listed below
for which a condition is listed for the opening of the same
sim. This is not a mistake; meeting EITHER criterion will open
the sim. The only exceptions to this are sims D13, D14, U13,
and U14, each of which can be opened in only one way. Worse,
the exact criteria for opening these late simes is not entirely
known. I have included all the infomation known to be relevant
to opening them, but some have claimed to have met these and
yet failed to get the sims. Check with the gamefaqs message
board if you have troubles. I have never had difficulty opening
these later sims, so if you do everything listed here in the
order listed you stand a good chance of opening them fine. Feel
free to do as many extra simulator runs for money and EP as you
like, as this should not adversely affect you, but if you fail
to do all of the things listed here, or if you do them out of
order, you may pay for it later by missing out on a 13th or
14th sim (and, thus, the reward that beating it will get you).
Also, take special note that some sims, even when unlocked,
will only become available to you after a certain point has
been reached in the storyline of the game; they will become
available to you later. I indicate this where applicable.
If you want ALL the sims, since we don't know exactly what
is necessary, open everything as soon as possible, just in
case, even if you won't be rewarded for it right away.
Finally, opening D14 requires meeting two separate challenges
that we know of, namely beating D13 in 15 turns or less AND
accomplishing a specific task in mission 27. These must BOTH
be met for D14 to be opened. D13 is listed before mission 27,
because it can be made available then, and because doing the
sim will make 27 a bit easier, but you can beat it after 27,
if you like. Doing so will not prevent you from opening D14.
Some shop listings here may confuse you. Shop Durandal 1,
for instance, is listed after the second story shift and before
mission 05. It is not, however, immediately available after
the second story shift, so you may look for it and not find
it. This is because, it will only become available after
you've moved around a little. In fact, Hermes will give
you some government money for parts before you have any place
to spend it! Fear not, the shop WILL become available before
the mission starts, so look for it. If new parts are not
available to you, then you can be pretty sure that even
selecting "move out" from the menu will not yet take you into
battle. Moreover, if you talk to people, someone will usually
inform you when new stuff has become available.
At the end of this faq I provide a quick-reference list of
the monetary rewards for each of the simulator missions, to
help you best decide how to build up that warchest. Cha-ching!
Also see the end for details on New Game Plus and statistics
for all equipment that can be gained in sims 1-12 or in con-
versation.
Okay, on to the guide. I recommend you just delete
these opening paragraphs and print out the guide for easy
reference. It should only be a few pages. Good hunting,
soldier!

---------------SPECIAL SIM REWARD CHOICES--------------
"Diff" indicates body power minus body weight, i.e. net
power.
---------------------NEW GAME PLUS-----------------------
Once you have completed the game, you are given the opportunity
to save. The file will be called "Game Clear", and when you
load it, the game starts over again. It is not harder, nor are
there any extras like new equipment or story changes. The only
difference is that it's a little more fun, because there's less
busy work to do in the simulator. Each member of your team will
begin with all their EP carried over from the previous game.
For me, this was nearly 2000 for some members of Durandal. This
means, with all the EP you'll be gaining from story missions,
you'll never have to worry about EP again. You will not keep
your skills, so you'll have to wait while for rapid fire 3 and
double shot II, but you will be able to buy all 6 ranks for all
your pilots right from the get-go, which makes the start of the
game easy and quick. You will also start with a large amount of
money. This is NOT equal to the total amount you earned in the
first game. Instead, it is equal to the unspent cash you had
left over plus the resale value of all your equipment (that's
items, parts, weapons, and packs, both those equipped and those
kept in surplus in your inventory). This will seem like a lot
early on, but by the time the second or third computer shop
comes along, you'll find your wad has been thoroughly blown.
Since it's much easier to earn money quickly late in the game,
therefore, you may want to spend some time building up a
warchest before finishing the game. To help you know when to do
this, I've indicated the point at which you will not return to
each storyline (i.e., your last chance to earn money for that
team). If you play through the game again, you'll be very glad
you did. Keep the save file and you and your friends will
be on easy street!
---------------------------------------------------------
--------------Special Equipment Statistics---------------
Here are the numbers for all the equipment you can get via
converstaion, or from beating sims 1-12 (see above for the sim
13 and and 14 rewards). List is in order of acquisition.
