First, this is not a gameplay FAQ. This is a complete list of all the rare
items you can acquire through Steal, and which monsters to Steal them from.
If you need help figuring out the Sphere Grid system, or want a walkthough,
look elsewhere. All of this information can also be found in my Monster
Encyclopedia, but I understand that not everyone wants to wade through 370k
of text just to find out where to obtain Shadow Gems (from Halmas, Sand
Worms, and the Abyss Worm, natch), hence this Steal FAQ. Monster data was
culled from poking around game files on the DVD-ROM, so I'm quite sure it's
correct. Monsters you cannot steal from are not listed, in the interest of
saving bandwidth.

The latest version of this guide, and all the other ones I've written, can

fault with what may be an out-of-date version. Some scans and pictorial

-- III. Frequently Asked Questions --

1. What is Steal?

Steal is exactly what it sounds like - you Steal items from enemies, which
oftentimes are extremely rare items you wouldn't obtain enough of through
normal means. Stealing does not cost any MP to preform, but the upgraded
"Mug" special - which is Steal plus a regular attack - costs 10 MP to
preform. Both of these abilities are on Rikku's part of the Sphere Grid.

2. How can I improve the success rate of Steal, or Steal better items?

Higher luck will improve the success rate of Steal. You can either increase
your luck the old-fashioned way, through the Sphere Grid, use the "Luck"
skill on your party, or use the "Jinx" skill on the enemy party. Since Luck
and Fortune Spheres are few and far between, I recommend using the skills. To
Steal better items, put the [Pickpocket] and/or [Master Thief] auto-abilities
into your armor. You can add [Pickpocket] with 30 Amulets, and [Master Thief]
with 30 Pendulums.

3. What's the difference between [Pickpocket] and [Master Thief]?

Like there are levels of protection against status abnormalities and
elements, [Silence Ward] and [Silenceproof], for example, so too are there
levels of Stealing boosts. [Pickpocket] allows you to Steal the enemy's rare
items before any common items, and [Master Thief] allows you to Steal ONLY
rare items, no matter how many common items the enemy may be carrying. For
example, if an enemy is carrying 2 Candle of Life items commonly, and 2
Purifying Salts rarely, [Pickpocket] would allow you to Steal the Salts
before the Candles, while [Master Thief] would allow you to Steal ONLY the
Purifying Salts, completely eschewing any theft of Candles of Life.

4. How do I encounter Mimic Boxes?

I thought it was totally obvious, but apparently some people don't know how
to encounter Mimic Boxes. Basically, in several areas in the game (Moonflow,
Sanubia Desert, and Omega Ruins), you'll sometimes encounter treasure chests
along with monsters. By Stealing from these chests - NOT MUGGING - the
chests will open, and you'll recieve an item. Treasure chests have 1 HP, and
if you Mug them, you will effectively kill them, and not recieve any item
for your trouble. Simple enough? In the Omega Ruins, occasionally when you
Steal from a treasure chest, the chest will explode, and become a Mimic Box.
Mimic Boxes are your friends - they drop 50,000 gil per battle, and twice
that amount if someone in your active party has a weapon with the
[Gillionaire] auto-ability.
